Around 7:30 a.m. May 9, teacher Dan DeRuyck was trying to prepare some breakfast before his students arrived when he was interrupted by a big group of people who were really happy to see him.

In a surprise ceremony, DeRuyck found out he is the pick for the 2019-2020 Centennial Teacher of the Year. “I was 100% astonished; I did not think I was going to win,� he said. “As much as I always say I crave attention, (and) I am kind of an attention man, I wasn’t ready for it from a bunch of highly respected, administrative types. It was very overwhelming.�

The Centennial School District has been acknowledging teacher excellence since 1966, when the fi rst Teacher of the Year award was given. The award is sponsored by the Centennial Education Association (CEA) and is supported by the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF).

DeRuyck, originally from Afton, now resides in White Bear Lake. In 2009, he was hired at the Centennial Area Learning Center (CALC) as a special education teacher for the district’s Journey Program, an adult transition program designed for students ages 18-21 with unique needs and abilities. All Seasons Rental expands after 23 years in business

LINO LAKES — Despite numerous hiccups along the way, an area couple couldn't be happier that they have finally broken ground on their new 7,500-squarefoot building.

Scott and Shelly Carlson have owned All Seasons Rental, located at 7932 Lake Drive, since 1996. Scott always pictured himself going into the tool repair business but said both his father

and uncle convinced him the rental business would be a better choice. “I've worked with equipment my whole life. From the time I was a little kid, I built go-karts and mini bikes, mowed lawns and fixed the neighbors’ lawn mowers,� he recalled. “I had a knack for that and I liked it, so this was kind of a way to be around equipment.�

It took some convincing for Shelly, as she had a teaching degree and no accounting

experience. The one thing Scott did have working in his favor was that his wife liked equipment and tools. When they were first starting out, it was not uncommon for them to hear, “People who start businesses who are married always get divorced.�

This summer they will celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary. “We don't bring work home with us and when we do go home, we really

“The goal is independence,” DeRuyck explained. “I enjoy watching a kid turn into an adult.”

DeRuyck has a degree in natural science from St. John’s University and a master’s degree in special education from St. Thomas University. After graduating from St. John’s, DeRuyck served as a paraprofessional in multiple districts and as a personal care assistant (PCA) for many years. In 2001, he was hired to teach middle school science at Minnesota Transition’s Charter School in Minneapolis, where he had to start a science program from the ground up.

After getting too stressed out in the new charter school environment, he ventured into the construction world as a carpenter between 2005 and 2008. That’s when he realized special education and teaching is right where he was supposed to be all along.

“When I was working in construction, I was working these part-time gigs and (my boss) would let me take classes and go do my clinicals,” he recalled. After subbing for South Washington County for a while he was hired by Centennial in 2009.

DeRuyck said his two mentors have been Betty Kaiser, who was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1979, and his mother, Carolyn DeRuyck, who inspired him to go into teaching after her 35-year career in the industry.

CEA President Bruce Woznak said there were a few things that made DeRuyck stand out in the nomination pool of nearly 20. “His communication skills with kids and the connections he makes, and he is very focused on creating a positive learning environment for kids,” Woznak explained.

“Also, the opportunities he provides to kids ... he has started groups such as walking club, yoga, meditation, reading programs at Golden Lake Elementary and helps kids with drivers training and ACT tests. The list goes on and on ...”

DeRuyck said the new title of Teacher of the Year is just “a boost to get better.”

have been a lot of issues that I have put on the back burner. I need to get better at technology (and) training my people, get more organized, build rubrics and a syllabus for every lesson for the entire year ... It is all about ‘Where do I go from here?’”

In recognition of National Peace Officers Week, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office will host its annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service at noon May 15 at the Anoka County Government Center Atrium, 2100 Third Ave., in Anoka. The event will recognize peace officers killed in the line of duty in Anoka County and those who lost their lives protecting communities across the nation in 2018.

Special tribute will be paid to fallen Deputy Ernest Zettergren of the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

Zettergren, 43, was killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle Dec. 7, 1953. He left behind a wife and six children.

Prior to the memorial service, there will be a squad procession from 61st Avenue just east of University Avenue in Fridley to the Anoka County Government Center. The start of the procession is close to the location where Deputy Zettergren lost his life.

These days, Lino Lakes Police Officer Tou Vang says many students either have a negative perception of law enforcement or have never interacted with police officers. With the creation of a new program, Vang is hoping to change that.

Cops and Friends launched April 3 at Centennial Middle School (CMS). Every week for an hour during the school day, students spend time with Vang and CMS School Resources Officer (SRO) Terina Hagen.

“The goal of the program is to build a solid foundation with students and set them up to have a positive perception of police officers and encourage future community engagement as adults,” Vang explained. “The hope is that the consistent presence of positive role models in a student's life can help provide guidance and encourages healthy decisions.”

Hagen added, “Kids in middle school are so impressionable and it’s when they start experimenting with being able to make their own decisions. Unfortunately, negative influences are often more abundant than positive ones in that decision making process. Our goal is to provide a positive interaction with police officers so they know the police are not just out to bust them for something.”

Although the program just launched, Vang, the former middle school resources officer, had had the idea for the program for a while.

“When I was here (as SRO), I found out how beneficial it was to have that constant positive role model present for youth. I wanted to continue that even though I am back on the road now,” he said. “I enjoy doing something different and interacting with the youth and not just taking calls and stopping vehicles.”

Itching to get back into the school atmosphere, Vang researched programs that other agencies have implemented and found the concept for Cops and Friends. After running it by Hagen, the police department and the school, the concept became a reality.

“In my opinion, this is when (students) are the most curious,” Vang said. “I think it is important to build that strong foundation at this age, so when they get into their teens and their early 20s, they have that strong foundation.”

Vang reached out to the school district to get the word out to teachers and parents about the program. If both the teacher and the student’s parents agreed, the students were able to join.

Officers buy the students lunch once a month.

During the hourlong visits they also talk, play games, do sports, etc. Recently, they spent time making cards for Mother's Day. “We can talk about school stuff or outside of school stuff, we are just there to be that friend they are looking for,” Vang explained.

Seventh-grader Arianna Hathaway said she wanted to participate in the program. “I needed a group of people who I could trust and be comfortable with.” She added, “In the future, you may not have people you can trust. It is good to have people who you can talk to, feel comfortable with and be happy around instead of having all of the drama in school.”

Even though the program is still in its infancy, it has already changed Hathaway's view of law enforcement.

“The police officers are not big, tough and scary, they can be marshmallows. They can be fun and actually have fun with kids. Not all cops are bad,” she said.

Seventh-grader Alayna Thompson decided to participate in the program after her friend told her about it. “Kids who maybe misunderstood cops before can come here and talk to them. It's a new friend group,” she said. “The cops are really nice and fun to hang out with.”

Wump World soapbox

M

y all-time favorite children’s author is the late Bill Peet. He wrote great books with memorable themes like “Zella, Zack and Zodiac,” and “Chester the Worldly Pig,” and was one of Walt Disney’s top illustrators/ writers. His name is credited on the immortal movie “Dumbo,” among other Disney classics. Another Peet gem is “The Wump World.” It’s a story about herbivorous creatures called Wumps that are driven underground when aliens, aptly called Pollutians, invade their tiny planet.

The Wumps are forced to leave their lush, green environment to Feeling subsist on fungus, or whatever else they can find growing in caves Inspired below the surface, while the new Debra Neutkens inhabitants cover just about every square inch of their beautiful world with concrete and trash.

When the Pollutians have exhausted a world’s resources, they send a scouting party into the universe to find a new planet to conquer. In keeping with their method operandi, the invaders eventually leave and the fearful Wumps return to the surface to find their green world a vast sea of highways, skyscrapers and heaps of garbage. And then, a miracle. A crack in the concrete allows a tiny seedling to erupt and the joyful Wumps have hope for the future.

I think about that poignant story, written in 1970 by the insightful Peet, when I see another big box store bite the dust, or a drug store close its doors when a competitor moves across the street, or one more strip mall, office condo or manufacturing plant sit vacant and decaying on what was once green space. It seems no patch of land can escape someone’s need to cover it with concrete.

I thought about Peet’s story last week when I received an April 29 press release announcing the world population clock at the Loro Parque Foundation in the Canary Islands reached the historic figure of 7.7 billion people. Based on estimates by the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs, noted the foundation, there will be more than 8 billion people by 2023.

The report then pointed out the obvious — that more human inhabitants on this planet will lead to more resource depletion, more endangered species, more deforestation and more pollution.

That story was followed by a report last week, also citing a United Nations study, that says humans are causing extinction at a rate never before seen in history. It is by sheer coincidence that this week’s political cartoonist also picked up on that alarming prediction. The 1500-page report estimates that more than one million species are at imminent risk for extinction.

I will blame it partly on plastic. It was heartbreaking to see news clips of a dead whale found with 90 pounds of plastic in its stomach and who can forget the viral photograph of a tiny seahorse clutching a plastic Q-tip in the Pacific. The photo was a finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition from the Natural History Museum in London.

Climate change and deforestation, extinctions and mountains of garbage are big, big problems. I certainly don’t have the answers. I’m not trying to be a Debby downer; I just hope everyone does their part in some small way to protect the planet. Please repurpose and recycle.

Let’s not end up like Wumps hoping for a miracle.

The state of Lyme disease in Minnesota

hen it comes to tick-related illness in Minnesota, the numbers aren’t in our favor.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Minnesota is at the epicenter of tick-related illness with the seventhhighest tally in the country of 26,886 confirmed cases of tick-borne infections between 2004 and 2016.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 1,408 confirmed Lyme disease cases in our state in 2017. There were an additional 910 probable cases or physician-diagnosed that did not Movers & cases meet criteria for Shakers confirmed cases but had laboratory Carolyn McClain evidence of infection.

Here are other important facts about Lyme disease in Minnesota: • Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick. It is important to educate yourself on the appearance of this specific tick. It looks very different than the common wood tick • The blacklegged ticks that spreads Lyme disease are smaller than a pinhead –less than one millimeter, or 0.04 inch. Yes, that is 4/100 of an inch.

• The infected tick must be attached for at least 24-48 hours to transmit the bacteria. The chances of getting Lyme disease increase the longer the tick is attached.

• Months after the onset of the illness, symptoms can become serious and include: multiple rashes, paralysis on one side of the face, heart palpitations, arthritis and severe fatigue.

• The signs of Lyme disease are different for everyone, but the most common complaint is “flulike” symptoms. Early signs and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes — all common in the flu. In up to 80% of Lyme infections, a rash is one of the first symptoms. Lyme disease causes a very characteristic bull’s eye rash. The presence of this rash is enough for the diagnosis of Lyme disease.

• Early diagnosis of Lyme disease can make all the difference by reducing the severity of the disease.

• Lyme disease is diagnosed through a physical examination and blood test.

• Blood tests may be negative within the first 2-3 weeks of illness. A blood test is not required for diagnosis of early Lyme disease when the characteristic rash is present. The blood test is an important part of diagnosis for patients who have been ill for more than one month.

• Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics.

• Antibiotics are very effective in killing the bacteria. Treatment is most effective early in the course of Lyme disease. Lyme disease detected later is also treatable with antibiotics but can cause symptoms that may take longer to go away,

even after the antibiotics have killed the Lyme disease bacteria.

• Prevention of Lyme disease includes staying away from tick-infested areas such as long grasses, brush, stumps, fallen logs and the leaf litter under trees. When in these areas check yourself often for ticks.

Remember, a tick must be attached for greater than 24 hours to spread disease.

• Wear light colored clothing and tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

• Use bug spray with DEET. • Always do a thorough tick check after being outside.

• Protect your pets. Use flea and tick preventative on your pets as they can carry ticks indoors and onto furniture and beds.

If you do find a tick on yourself, remove it promptly following these steps: • If possible, use a pair of tweezers to grasp the tick by the head. ° Grasp the tick close to the skin ° Pull the tick outward slowly, gently and steadily ° Do not squeeze the tick ° Use an antiseptic on the bite.

Avoid folk remedies like Vaseline, nail polish remover or burning matches — they are not a safe or effective way to remove ticks. Consult your doctor or head to the UR if you are having trouble removing the tick or if you are noticing any abnormal signs and symptoms after the bite.

Transitioning your houseplants outdoors

y fascination with houseplants began as a young girl on my family farm. Winter brought many gray days when we were house-bound and the green plants in my room always provided relief from the barren outdoors.

Through trial and error, I have learned that getting plants to thrive and survive is not really magic. One resource that has helped me is the U of M Extension website. Expert advice and information for outdoor gardening and houseplants is provided free of charge. By accessing this resource, you can limit the frustration of losing your houseplants.

March is the time of year when I start planning the annual migration of my houseplants and tropicals to the outdoors. Every spring my collection of assorted plants moves outdoors for the long awaited dose of fresh air and

sunlight. The second migration takes place when I bring my plants back in the house in the fall. I find that the tropical plants grow at a much faster rate outside and when fall comes around, the adjustment Gardener’s time is slower than in spring.

Grapevine theSuccess in the transition of plants Mary Fitch to the outdoors lies in three important details; temperature, sunlight and watering. First, the low temperatures the houseplants are exposed to outdoors are critical to the plant’s health. I manage the moves in the spring and fall based on the least hardy plants. If I protect the least hardy, I will have protected them all.

The low temperature that I use to dictate a move is 45 degrees based on my plant mix. A good rule of thumb is to wait two to four weeks after the last frost.

Second, the amount of direct sunlight that plants are exposed to needs to be monitored. A key factor to the changeover to the outdoors is carefully acclimating the plants to sunlight.

Over sunning too fast can lead to scorching. Carefully expose your plants to a few hours of sunlight and slowly lengthen the exposure time over a few weeks. It can be labor intensive, but in some cases you can take advantage of a shade tree by placing plants under it and moving the plants gradually, into more sunny areas.

Third, U of Minnesota Extension research explains that the principle reason for houseplant fatality is improper watering. Indoor houseplants

Today, Minnesota is facing a youth nicotine epidemic and tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease. This crisis demands a strong response from our state lawmakers.

We know what strategies work. In fact, keeping tobacco prices high is the single most effective way to prevent kids from starting and help adults quit smoking.

In the next week or so, our local Senator, Roger Chamberlain, will lead legislative efforts to craft a wide-ranging tax package. I encourage Sen. Chamberlain to use this opportunity to stand up for kids and health by keeping the price of tobacco, including e-cigarettes, high.

I have heard the heartbreaking stories of far too many of our families, co-workers and

friends whose lives were cut short by tobacco use, including my own dad, a life-long smoker, who died at 58. We cannot let the next generation of Minnesotans experience these painful and preventable tragedies.

We should not give in to the tobacco industry, and it would be unconscionable to weaken taxes on the new generation of tobacco products that are addicting our kids. That’s why I am urging Sen. Chamberlain and all legislators to ensure all tobacco products and devices are covered by strong taxes.

I hope Sen. Chamberlain will join our efforts to create a smoke-free generation by strengthening our tobacco taxes. Helping adults quit smoking and preventing kids from starting would create a healthier state for generations to come.

Centerville resident’s distinguished career as college, pro referee ending soon

June Courteau, whose 51-year career as a basketball official was capped by five years with a major NCAA position, will turn in her whistle at the end of this school year.

“I have always loved the game and put the game fi rst, because it should accept nothing less,” said Courteau in a feature story on the NCAA website.

A Centerville resident since 2005, she became the NCAA’s national coordinator of officiating in 2014.

Her retirement takes effect May 31.

Courteau, inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, was a women’s basketball official from 1968 through 2011, working 20 Division I championships, 12 Final Fours and five national championship games.

The North St. Paul native also officiated in the WNBA from 1997 through 2011, including 13 playoff

Callie Cody Callie Cody, an eighth-grader, is the leader in points for Centennial’s girls lacrosse team, which has an 8-1 record. Last week, Cody notched four goals in a 14-7 win over Andover, and three in a 17-8 win over Coon Rapids. For the season, she has 18 goals, three assists and 12 ground balls, leading a lineup that features several good scorers.

The Cougars topped Andover 14-7 on Monday, May 6, with Callie Cody scoring four goals, Ella O’Hearn three and Janelle Fulton two. Notching one each were Neila Haney, Ellie Jensen, Sydney Chance-Farley, Gabbi Buttweiler and Audrey Dufresne.

Adopt a storm drain to help protect rivers and wetlands

A new Adopt-a-Drain program debuted across the seven-county metro area. Its goal is to engage residents in helping to prevent water pollution through smallscale volunteer action, just 15 minutes at a time, and only twice a month (www. adopt-a-drain.org). You can join more than 3,400 “adopters� by volunteering to keep your nearest storm drain clear of litter, leaves, grass clippings and dirt that would otherwise pollute our waterways.

Storm drains help to protect neighborhoods against flooding, but they also flow to rivers, lakes and wetlands, carrying debris off our streets and into the water. Most cities use street sweepers to help keep the streets clean, but these machines are expensive to operate and usually only run 2-4 times per year. Residents can help do their part

by spending a few minutes each month clearing their nearest storm drains and sweeping up leaves, dirt and garbage in the street in front of their homes.

To adopt a storm drain, go to www.

Adopt-a-Drain.org and use the map to find your neighborhood storm drains.

Then click and sign up to adopt. To dispose of the waste you collect, separate it into three categories and place it in the appropriate receptacles: trash, recyclables (glass and plastic bottles, cans) and compostables (leaves and grass clippings). Sediment collected in the spring contains winter road salt and should be put in the trash. During the spring snowmelt, you can also help to protect your street from flooding by clearing away snow and ice built up around your storm drain so that the water can flow freely. When you’re done, go online to report your work so that local partners can measure our collective impact.

Though the Adopt-a-Drain program is just now expanding into the larger Twin Cities area, a pilot version of the program has been operating in St. Paul since 2014. Last year, storm drain adopters reported collecting a total of 35,562 pounds of debris that would have otherwise washed into city lakes or the Mississippi River. The program has also sparked friendly neighborhood competitions: Hamline-Midway competed against Como to see which neighborhood could adopt the most storm drains.

Adopt-a-Drain was developed by Metro Watershed Partners, a coalition of more than 70 public, private, and nonprofit organizations in the Twin Cities area, that works together to inspire people to protect water quality in their communities. Partners share stories of everyday Minnesotans taking action to protect water (www.CleanwaterMN.org) and meet monthly to share resources

and develop new skills.

According to Jana Larson, a staff member at Hamline University who’s played a lead role in developing Adopta-Drain, Minnesota’s program is the largest in the nation. Several other large cities are piloting similar programs — Houston, Oakland, New Orleans, Norfolk – but Minnesota’s is the only program that includes more than one city and, in typical Minnesota fashion, already has more volunteers signed up than in any other location. “People really become attached to their drains,�

try not to talk about work,” Shelly explained. “Scott has his stuff to do here, and I have my stuff to do here.

Not that sometimes we don't have disagreements, we do; but we respect each other, and what each other's thing is.”

Scott's dad, Richard, actually spotted the home, barber shop and beauty salon on Lake Drive and suggested that it would be a great location for the business. The Carlsons purchased the building and immediately begin renovating it to fit their needs.

Scott and Shelly hosted a garage sale, sold virtually all of their belongings and their home in Columbus Township and moved into the recently renovated basement of the home with their two children, Bjorn and Hannah.

Bjorn has served as the store’s general manager for the past two years. “I pretty much grew up with the business. I have been around it my whole life,” he said.

In 2005, it was not uncommon for Scott and Shelly to work 14- to 16-hour days, so they decided they needed some separation from work and home life.

The couple bought a home a couple of blocks away.

In the beginning, the business was very small, and the couple did everything themselves. All Seasons Rental initially offered rental of lawn and garden items but has continued to expand over the years. Shelly explained that in the beginning, the business had 50 metal chairs available for rent. That number is now closer to 1,500.

Today, All Seasons Rental offers ready-mix concrete, truck rentals, and party and event rentals such as patio heaters. The business also has items for automotive, contractor equipment, floor tools, generators, ladders, painting, plumbing, power tools, pumps, pressure washers, scaffolding, trailers and more. The Carlsons now have full-time employees to help divvy up some of the responsibilities. Although Bjorn left for a while to attend college and to pursue other things, he has figured out this is exactly what he wants to be doing.

“After college I did some other stuff, but I was kind of getting sick of it,” he said. “I heard that our longtime general manager was retiring, and my parents were thinking about the future of the business and what their plans were, if they were going to sell it or continue to run it. Being something that I have grown up with, I couldn't stand to see it get sold.”

The plan is for Bjorn to take over the business someday. If you ask Scott, his plan is to retire in 10 years. If you ask Shelly, retirement is closer to five years away.

has really helped with marketing. For the past 10 years, Scott said they have known they needed to expand. “This is a big project that costs a lot of money.

We had to take our time and do it right.”

The expansion was set in motion in 2016 after the vacant commercial lot next door went up for sale. The couple persevered, despite some hiccups along the way, including a building redesign after estimates came in too high.

Despite it all, All Seasons Rental broke ground on the new building May 2. The Carlsons hope to move the operation over to the new building, which will house the showroom, warehouse and shop, sometime in August. The existing storefront (home) and pole barn will be demolished to create more yard space and increase the number of parking spots from four to 40.

“It is going to make the experience much better for the customer; they are going to have places to park, better traffic flow,” Scott explained. “We will also be able to expand our equipment line, and a lot of equipment that was stored outside will now come inside and stay clean and in good condition.”

In the end, the Carlsons are thrilled to keep pleasing customers. “One of the things that is the most enjoyable is helping customers figure out how to solve a problem, do their job or landscaping. There is still a lot of doit-yourselfers. It is fun to help them,” Shelly said.

Scott added, “We are in the business of renting equipment, but we are really in the people business.”

Centennial survey engages parents, creates open dialogue

This spring, 670 parents took time out of their busy schedules to share feedback on how Centennial Schools is doing.

Six years ago, the district began offering an annual parent survey to obtain feedback and start an open dialogue addressing what the district is doing well and areas where it can improve.

“It comes down to continuous improvement. We want to make sure we are meeting the mark for as many people as possible. If we are not asking the questions, we are not getting better each and every day,” said Superintendent Brian Dietz.

Who took the survey?

The survey, which was offered online through Google, was open from March 29 through April 7.

A majority of survey respondents have children at the elementary level (55%) followed by high school (41%), middle school (35%) and early childhood education (8%). In addition, 79% of the respondents are open-enrolled in the district, versus 21% who reside within district boundaries.

“We want to make sure we are engaging our community,” Dietz explained. “When we go through all of this information, we can be more informed; it can be a catalyst to validate the work we are doing and talk about the areas we might have to make some adjustments to.”

Dietz added, “Our tag line is 'connecting, achieving and preparing'. That is really what we are looking to drill down on with these surveys. Are we doing those things that are a part of our tag line?

Things that are a part of our reputation that we hold so dearly. We want to make sure we are delivering on a daily basis.”

The results One survey question asks about achieving education excellence. Respondents were asked to choose one of five options including: Centennial is a high performing district, my student enjoys coming to school (besides homework), my student receives homework that is relevant to their studies, staff is available to speak to me about my student's performance and my student is connected to at least one adult that they can speak to in their school. For all of those questions, 84-94% of parents stated they agreed. (See graph for exact breakdown.)

The next question asks about district communications. Ninety-five percent said they felt they were well informed of district news and events; 92% said the amount of information they received from the district was adequate; and 55% said they learn about what is going on in the district by reading stories in the Quad Community Press.

Around three years ago, the district started asking similar questions every year so it could look at trend data. This year, a couple of areas were above the average trend, including the question about the district being a “high-performing district” as well as the district's communications.

Dietz explained all the other areas were very similar to previous years. “It was pretty consistent,

and we are proud of that. That indicates to us that we are asking the right questions, we are engaging our community and we are making sure we are checking in,” he said.

Where the district can improve Lastly, the district asked parents how they prefer to receive news and information from the district.

One area the district wants to improve on for next year is the mobile app. “We know next year we are going to take more time to inform and market (the app) so that people understand it is available.

We feel like it's a great stopping point for the busy parent who just needs the information quickly and wants to go to one place to get it,” Dietz explained.

What now?

An important step of the survey is what happens after the data is collected. The district meets with a parent advisory group, which has representation from all sites as well as grade levels. The group is made up of around 10 individuals and includes members of PTOs, PTAs and other advisory groups.

“The survey is one piece: it is an important piece,

but it is not the only piece. The most important piece is the meeting we have on annual basis with our parent leadership group,” Dietz said. “Because sometimes a question doesn't tell us everything, and sometimes the answer doesn't tell us everything either. We need to get more details and perspective behind it.”

When the group met April 24, the district found out there was a mixed response about the mobile app. Dietz said although some members were familiar with the app, some had never heard about it before, or didn't know about the information it can provide.

Overall, the district is once again happy with the results of the survey but won't stop striving for a perfect score.

“We feel like we are hitting the mark, but there is never a level of satisfaction that we have mastered everything. We know we need to keep working hard, and that's the mantra of all our staff in this district,” Dietz said.

“In a perfect world we would be at 100%, but we know that's not realistic. It's an ambitious goal, but we always want to push the envelope to see if we can get there.”

High school sweethearts of 1973 just married, 46 years later Jeff Blair, who grew up in Blaine, and Cindy Syverson, who grew up in Coon Rapids, dated on and off beginning in 1973 during their junior year at Coon Rapids High School. In 1982, however, their lives took two different paths.

Blair drove a motorcycle out to California and he later married in 1995; Syverson built a life as a teacher in the Forest Lake School District for 36 years.

In 2017, it was Syverson who brought them back together when she sent a condolence card to Blair following the passing of his wife.

She let him know that if he wanted to talk, she was available to listen.

Blair called her and they have been together every day since.

“When I met with Cindy and Jeff to talk wedding flowers, it was very was obvious that these two had a special bond,” said Terri UyLennon, owner of Uy-Lennon Floral and Design. “They were like two teenagers, newly in love. Cindy was beaming excitedly about wedding details, and Jeff was chiming in his support.”

At the ages of 63 and 62, respectively, Blair and Syverson were married May 4 at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Andover; the reception was at Courtyards of Andover. More than 30 of Syverson’s fellow schoolteachers attended the wedding: she spent six

years as a fi fth-grade teacher before teaching kindergarten at Linwood for 30 years.

“Cindy and Jeff are such a sweet couple. I immediately knew I wanted to photograph their wedding day when we met,” said Michelle Tverberg, owner of Delight Photography. “Their story, and just the manner between them (was) so relaxed and ever so sweet as they discussed their vision for their day.”

The wedding was to be held on Blair’s mother’s 82nd birthday. As part of their wedding vision, the couple planned to surprise her with an Elvis impersonator who would serenade the birthday girl at the reception. “(This) showed just how special this couple is and how they share joy with those around them,” Tverberg said. “It was my privilege to capture their wedding day.”

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been dodging showers much of the month with a sprinkle or brief shower at times but our luck ran out last Wednesday, May 8 with an all-day soaking rain that totaled 1.71â&#x20AC;?. We faired much better than our northern neighbor, Duluth, which totaled 10.9â&#x20AC;? of snow. Better them than us, right? Fishing opener worked out nicely with only some late afternoon showers on Saturday. POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Officers stopped a vehicle for illegal driving conduct in the 600 block of Birch Street April 30. Officers found the driver to be impaired and the driver was ultimately arrested for DWI. Officers also located a controlled substance inside the vehicle. The driver was booked into the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers received a report of a suspicious vehicle driving erratically in the 7500 block of Lake Drive May 1. The driver was subsequently arrested for third-degree DWI and booked into jail.

• An individual called to report a possible hit-andrun incident at the Lino Lakes YMCA parking lot May 1. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to

a residence in the 600 block of 62nd Street for welfare check May 2. Upon arrival, officers arrested an adult male for assault and domestic assault. The male was transported to jail. No one was injured by the suspect during the altercation.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for multiple violations in the 2300 block of Main Street May 3. The male driver was arrested for fi fth-degree narcotics possession, driving after revocation, expired registration and a small amount of marijuana. The male was booked into jail.

• A resident from the 300 block of Ojibway Path reported someone broke one of their exterior lights May 4, possibly in retaliation.

Extra patrol was requested.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 6100

block of I-35E May 5 and found the driver to be intoxicated. The driver was arrested, transported to jail and booked for DWI. • Officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the 1900 block of Main Street in Centerville May 5, but the vehicle fled from officers. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers assisted another agency with a crash with injuries in the 1300 block of I-35W May 5. A passenger was subsequently transported to the hospital and the driver left the scene of the crash. An investigation is ongoing with Minnesota State Patrol.

• An officer responded to a radio call of a hit-and-run accident in the 600 block of Main Street May 5. The officer found three vehicles were involved in a minor traffic crash and one vehicle

failed to stop. The other driver was later identified; an investigation is ongoing.

Officers responded to a suspicious activity report in the 7200 block of Savanna Court May 6.

The officer subsequently arrested two adult females on outstanding warrants and for various narcotics offenses.

The Centennial Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to a phone call fraud report in the 80 block of East Road in Circle Pines May 1. Officers took information regarding unauthorized purchases that were made using the victim’s bank account.

There are no known suspects.

• Police arrested an adult female for DWI in the 50

block of North Road in Circle Pines May 1 after a 911 caller reported a reckless driver in the area.

• Police responded to a fi re in the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington May 3.

One adult male suffered burns but refused to be transported to the hospital.

The fi re was accidental.

• Officers were dispatched to a theft report on Pine Drive in Circle Pines May 6. There are no known suspects.

• Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Lexington Avenue and Woodland Road in Circle Pines May 6. While talking to the driver of the vehicle, officers detected the smell of marijuana. The vehicle was subsequently searched and the driver was cited and released from the scene.
