Blaine resident Chuck Dolezalek, 53, is gearing up for his 22nd year of participation in the Bike MS: C.H. Robinson MS 150 Ride.

Nearly 3,500 cyclists are setting out to raise more than $3 million to make a difference in the lives of 1 million people who live with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the U.S. Cyclists will ride up to 150 miles over two days in the annual Bike MS: C.H. Robinson MS 150 Ride.

The route will depart from Proctor for Hinckley on June 8 and conclude at Century College in White Bear Lake on June 9.

A new study conducted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society shows more than twice as many people in the U.S. are living with MS than previously thought. The previous studies estimated the prevalence to be 400,000, but the new study shows that

Longtime chef opens business in Hugo

As if having the last name Grilz wasn't a good enough reason to open a butcher shop and market, the Centerville resident and longtime chef has always wanted to own his own business.

Dan Grilz, a resident of Centerville, opened J. Morten's in May. The business is located at 14643 Mercantile Drive (Suite 104), next to Anytime Fitness in Hugo.

“I've always had it in the back of my head that I was going to be a business owner someday and that I would regret it if I didn't try it,” Grilz explained.

“I always thought it was going to be a restaurant.”

Grilz, who has 15 years of experience as a chef, attended culinary school at La Cordon Bleu in Mendota Heights.

He got his start at Bayport Cookery.

“That's where I got hooked,” he said.

After graduating from culinary school, he headed to Chicago for an internship at Trio under chef Grant Achatz, a well-known American chef and restaurateur known for his progressive cuisine. After finishing his internship, Grilz returned to Bayport Cookery before moving on to other restaurants. Most recently, he worked at Stella's on 97 in Forest Lake before a quick stint in the corporate world.

“I tried the corporate route and hated it. I made it six weeks and then I quit,” Grilz recalled. His girlfriend, Kandi Renelt, suggested he get a job cutting meat somewhere like Kowalski's or Von Hanson's since he liked butchering.

“I turned to her and said, 'Why don't I just open up a butcher shop?’ And 15 months later, here we are,” he said.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Speed, alcohol, no seatbelt factor in 102 deaths As of mid-May, preliminary data from the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS) shows 102 people have died on Minnesota roads since Jan. 1.

Four main factors continue to contribute to the loss of life. Of the fatalities, 20 were speedrelated (20 percent), 19 were unbelted motorist (19 percent),18 were alcohol-related (18 percent) and 10 were from distracted driving (10 percent).

Three were from other factors.

The summer months are the most dangerous on Minnesota roads. Buckling up is the fi rst line of defense in a crash. Ninety-two unbelted motorists lost their lives on Minnesota roads in 2018.

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Centennial School Board approved the following action at its May 13 meeting: • Recognized parent volunteers who served on the Blue Heron Book Fair Committee.

Volunteers Laura Rightmire, Kari Thill, Alyssa Donley, Sachi Groshong, Chris Nigbor, Jackie Palecek, Jeannie Schumacher and Nicole Welna organized a spring book fair and coin challenge. The goal was to increase students' desire to read outside of the classroom.

• Announced graduating seniors would again return to their elementary schools for a visit Friday, May 31.

Superintendent Brian Dietz said this will mark the third year of the event.

• Approved an athletic training program services agreement with Fairview Health Services (doing business as Athletic Medicine), effective over the next four school years at a cost of $22,000.

• Presented the annual report from the American Indian Education Parent Committee. The report included an overview of the program, highlights from the year and a summary of community feedback from a survey.

The Chain of Lakes Rotary presented a check to the Slipka Foundation for $14,000 at the May 13 school board meeting. The money was raised from the Rotary’s annual Chain of Giving event. The funds will be used for Centennial scholarships to cover fees, equipment and other expenses so all students can participate in co-curricular activities. The general fund has a surplus ($2,797,240) resulting from the voterapproved operating referendum, he noted.

• Approved the 2019-2020 meal prices, which increased. Prices will be as follows: elementary lunch, $3/ day; secondary lunch, $3.20/day; reduced lunch at no cost; milk, $.60/half pint; adult meal/nonstudent, $4.25; second student lunch, $3.60; student breakfast, $2.40/day; kindergarten breakfast at no cost; adult breakfast, $2.80/ day; reduced breakfast at no cost; lunch entrée, $2.70.

In light of the fee increase, school board member Chris Bettinger wanted to know whether the district has any accommodations or a plan in place for families who fall behind on their account. Dietz explained that in addition to the mechanisms that are put in place by federal government, the district also has some funds available for people who need them and is trying to grow a secondary fund for use next fall.

“We have multiple steps we will take to ensure

every kid is going to be taken care of,” he said.

School board member Kathryn Timm noted that in the past, the Angel Fund has also occasionally been used for that purpose.

• Placed two teachers, Angelina Anderson and Megan Piechowski, on an unrequested leave of absence (ULA) effective at the end of the school year on June 30. Director of Human Resources Dan Melde explained that both teachers will remain on staff, just at a reduced FTE. He added the ULA is due to section reduction at an elementary school and registration at the high school.

• Terminated probationary teacher Nick Brady. Melde explained Brady was hired on late in the school year (March) to fill a position, which has since been filled by another candidate.

• Approved a “change” to the 2018-2019 calendar due to inclement weather. Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Scott Johnson explained the board previously approved converting

a staff development day to a student contact day due to an abundance of snow days.

Subsequently, April 11 was declared a snow day. “Because the school district remains above the minimum required number of instructional days and hours at each grade level, it is recommended that no additional days be added to the existing school district calendar,” Johnson said.

• Approved the long-term facilities maintenance budget for Northeast Metro Intermediate School District 916 for $144,000. Chaffey explained that each member district is responsible for levying its portion of the 916 budget; however, that figure has not yet been calculated. Last year, Centennial was responsible for around $17,000 of the total budget.

nother school year wraps up this week, and families will stumble into the new routines of the first few days of summer break. For many, the first few weeks of summer break are filled with various camps and activities – so many that it becomes a full-time job for parents to drive them around. A lot of high school age kids look for seasonal employment opportunities.

Our soon to be 15-year-old daughter just got her first job at a local golf course. She has been anxious to get a job since her bothers has had a paper routs since last year, and we think it will be a great learning experience to follow a schedule and work with a supervisor and coworkers. The added bonus is that she will earn a paycheck and hopefully learn how to manage money rather than always asking for it. I was pleasantly surprised by how many jobs are available to younger teens. I have heard of other high school kids working as kitchen staff and dishwashers at local restaurants, caddies at golf courses, the State Fair, summer programs, Wild Mountain Publisher’s recreation Waterpark or as referees for soccer or lacrosse associations, or baseball umpires.

View Some of these jobs sound fun and pay Carter Johnson well. The jobs I have not heard much buzz about are mowing lawns, gardening, or babysitting – and I would guess those jobs are in high demand during the summer months. As a kid I always had a lawn-mowing business in the summer, and it was a great early lesson about how to manage my own business. My parents encouraged us to save our money with an envelope system, where 10% was saved for a special project, 10% for giving, 10% for immediate spending money and the rest was put in a savings account for college.

I would be remiss in not mentioning that younger kids can also get jobs delivering your local newspaper. We have seen an increase in the number of youth who want a paper route. Paper carriers learn time management, discipline and customer service. There is a short 45-minute interview and orientation process here at the Press, but otherwise it is an opportunity for kids to manage their own delivery business. The time commitment is typically in between 60-90 minutes per week, and is preferably year-round.

There are very few newspaper groups who still offer carrier opportunities for kids; we continue to do it because I personally believe it is an invaluable experience, teaching kids responsibility and entrepreneurialism at an early age.

Having a job is a huge milestone in a youth’s journey to be self-sufficient. This summer keep an eye out for kids who are working in their first job, and be kind and patient with them.

Campfires and square marshmallows Saturday night were invited to a friend’s house for a campfire. My son begged me to arrive early, as the kids wanted to play before it got dark. As hotdogs were being cooked on the campfire grate, the kids were fishing, tossing a football, shooting hoops, skateboarding, scootering and running in the woods throughout the neighborhood. As it grew dark, they started to play hide and seek. The adults sat around the fire discussing the stock market, new patents and trivia, while listening to the kids laughter and playful screeching that echoed throughout the neighborhood. In that moment, as in so many others, I was so grateful to live and work in this community. I hope this summer we can unplug from electronics and be energized in the outdoors playing pick-up games and sports, stringing up a hammock between two trees, fishing or swimming in a local lake, riding bikes, taking walks, or any number of things to stay active and be in the fresh air. Consider it pure joy when the kids are laughing and the birds are singing in your neighborhood.

Sail boat racing As the boating season kicks into high gear, it’s a great reminder to keep an eye out for sail boats and know the rules of the road on the water. We have encouraged our kids to complete the boater safety course and get their boater’s license. Lets keep our lakes and rivers safe this summer. Parents may face consequences for underage drinking

t’s an exciting time for the Class of 2019. Graduating seniors will soon accept their diplomas and celebrate a major milestone with friends and family. While these new graduates kick back and relax, their parents stress about planning graduation parties - figuring out food, seating, entertainment and much more.

With all of the details that go into planning a successful graduation party, underage Movers & drinking is the thing on Shakers last parents’ minds.

It shouldn’t be.

Know the Securing TM Truth alcohol that will be available to adults attending a graduation party is an important detail too many parents overlook. An unsecured and unsupervised case of beer or a bottle of wine can be tempting for teens. Worse, an older sibling or unaware relative may even provide your graduate with alcohol.

On average, 53% of underage drinkers reported family and friends as their source of alcohol.

While some people may think drinking at a graduation party seems innocent, teenager’s brains are still developing and are highly sensitive to the effects of alcohol. Short-term use leads to sharply decreased judgement

while regular use of alcohol during adolescence can have lasting effects and may even interfere with normal brain functioning during adulthood.

Parents can also get in legal trouble for allowing underage drinking on their property.

Social host ordinances will penalize parents if they are caught providing liquor to underage drinkers, even if it was not intentional.

“Social host ordinances hold adults responsible for hosting or providing a place for underage drinking to happen,” said Sadie Holland, the prevention education manager for Know the Truth.

As of 2018, social host ordinances have been adopted by 132 cities and 33 counties in the state. Parents who violate social host ordinances can face up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Parents may also be held responsible for damages if a teen is in an alcohol-related accident while impaired.

“While it may seem intimidating, there are easy steps you can take to help prevent underage drinking,” advised Holland.

Discuss underage drinking with your teen Only 1 in 100 parents suspect that their child consumes alcohol, but one in six teens are involved in underage drinking.

Parents need to accept the reality that underage drinking

is common and discuss their expectations with their children.

Talk to your teen about social host ordinances When talking to their children, parents should also explain what a social host ordinance is and what the penalties mean. By explaining the consequences to teens, it will make them more aware of what they risk for their parents by drinking underage.

Have a backup plan While planning the party, parents should discuss how they will handle the situation if underage drinking occurs.

Having a plan already in place will help parents resolve the situation quickly.

Recruit help Share your expectations with the other adults attending the event so that they can help you keep an eye out for underage drinking. Even better, consider hiring a bartender for the event.

Remain aware By far the most important way to prevent underage drinking is to remain aware of what is happening at your home.

You may be tempted to imbibe yourself, but if you are impaired, it can be much harder to make sure your teen doesn’t.

Looking out for ‘those not here…’

R ecently, I read a mission statement from a group of small churches in another part of Minnesota. The fi rst sentence was, “We agree that the most important reason God has called us here is for the sake of those not here.”

I admit that it took me a minute for the full weight of that sentence to sink in. As it did, it gave me much to consider.

What a brave thing for any church to claim…but especially for a small group of struggling, rural churches.

Brave and true. One of the pastors told me that the statement raised a fair amount of discussion and

concern, but was finally passed when people understood its hopefulness… how this statement pulled them into a future with mission and meaning that would bring life to Pastor their congregations a time when most Pondering at of them were worried about closing their David doors. As long as they Wrightsman focused on ministry to, with and for “those h are nott here,” h who there would always be a congregation because there were

always more people “not here” than “here.”

The temptation is great for any community to turn in on ourselves… to focus all our attention, resources and energy on the things that serve only us. But God calls us out of our self-centered ways into the ways of faith and righteousness. That call turns our attention away from looking out for ourselves to looking out for “those not here.”

Those not here, can be everyone from our neighbors who are unchurched, to those who live in poverty and fear in our communities and all around the world. The not here folks are sitting at home in the

Centennial/ Quad area and they are waiting for medicine in places like Haiti and Bangladesh.

The joy and the challenge of being the church and following Jesus Christ is found in the ministry we do for the sake of those not here. If we are intent about reaching them, then that enthusiasm will give meaning and shape the problems, projects and programs we do and how we do them.

And that enthusiasm will also give us a new set of “measuring sticks” for appraising goals reached.

Spread the word about oceans On May 29 I had the opportunity to watch a Netflix documentary entitled "Chasing Coral" at a local library. I learned that coral reefs worldwide are dying at an alarming rate. Excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is dissolving into the oceans, warming them and causing acidification.

To illustrate the enormity of the situation, take the example of just the Great Barrier Reef. It comprises an area similar to the entire Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. Imagine that suddenly, over the span of two months, every tree, bush and plant from Washington, D.C., up the coast to Maine died. Every green living thing, destroyed. That is the scope of the destruction to the GBR, and this is happening all over the world.

Why? Because the ocean temperature is going up by as much as 2 degrees Centigrade

— that is equivalent to the situation where if you or I began running a temperature of 102 F instead of our healthy 98.6 F. That certainly would indicate illness. And so, as the corals die, little fish leave, followed by the big fish along with all other ocean life in that area. More than 3 billion people depend on the oceans for their livelihood and food.

As World Oceans Day is observed June 8 this year, please commit to educating yourself and spread the word. Our oceans are in trouble; to learn more, consider attending a presentation on ocean acidification at 7 p.m. June 8 at the Coon Rapids Civic Center with guest speaker Professor Kevin Theissen from the University of St. Thomas. And if you subscribe to Netflix, do watch this disturbing documentary.

CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its May 28 meeting: • Heard from Councilwoman Jennifer Rauner, who mentioned she read a letter to the editor in the May 21 Quad Community Press from a Lino Lakes resident about who is responsible for damage caused by water main breaks. “I don't know that a lot of people know whose responsibility it is for what part of the infrastructure in their yard to the street,” Rauner said. She wondered whether the city could send out some information on the topic to residents, perhaps put it in the newsletter.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen explained that everything that is connected to the main is the city's responsibility and all of the lines that run through yards are the homeowner's responsibility.

Antonen shared a recent example of a homeowner who hit a new gas service when installing a fence.

“It is extremely important to locate lines before you do any digging,” he said. “We had to do an emergency shut-off, emergency repair, get a crew of three to four guys after hours to fix it and the homeowner had to pay for it. It cost almost $1,000.”

• Received an update on the iron enhanced sand filter project. Councilman Dean Goldberg wanted to know whether the filter was up and running. Antonen ex-

plained the project is being held up by a permit that the city needs to get from the Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) in order to cross a ditch maintained by RCWD. “It has been pretty frustrating. We have been talking to them for four weeks trying to get this,” he said. “We are working on it. I am confident that we should have it by Monday (June 3).”

• Heard from Councilman Matt Percy, who wanted to know how the recent changes to Local Government Aid would affect the city. Mayor Dave Bartholomay said, “It looks like for us it would be an additional $35,000 per year. Some cities got a lot more than that and some got less. It is based on a complicated but improved formula.”

• Relayed the Utilities Commission met May 15. Antonen said the commission is looking at getting an HD channel this fall.

• Approved a settlement agreement with Century Link. “For many months, Century Link has planned on (ceasing to provide) the cable TV business in our area, so they plan on ending their franchise after it expires here in the next year,” Antonen explained.

“The agreement is for an orderly exit from their franchise that they have in our seven-city, North Metro TV area. This resolves some of the alleged franchise violations that Century Link had regard-

ing build-out and goals for customers in our area because they didn't meet anything they said they were going to meet.”

Antonen added, “It also provides service through the end of the franchise to the customers they still have. They have to provide a 90-day notice if they wish to stop providing service in our city. It also relieves the commission from spending any money on franchise renewal, which is very costly.” Rauner noted Century Link still plans to offer internet in the area but will suspend its Prism cable TV. “It is really too bad. There aren't going to be any winners here, it is certainly not a win for the folks in our service area and not for the commission itself, either. We can say we are going to save money for not renewing the franchise, but we would be better off if they had a growing franchise and had renewed with us,” Percy said. “We would have gladly spent the money on that to do that. We were super excited to see the competition come in from Century Link.”

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Ex-Cougar set lofty college goals, and delivered 2 national titles

For a two-time national champion in college, Erica Oawster had a relatively modest high school career.

As a thrower on the Centennial track team, Oawster placed sixth twice in the discus at state meets while never qualifying for state in shot put.

However, she attracted college recruiters with her potential when they saw her in camps, and she improved immensely at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC).

This year, Oawster capped her career with Division III national championships in both shot put, indoors and discus, outdoors.

“Going into college, my goal was to be a fourtime All-American, and a national champion in discus,” said Oawster, who graduated from UWEC on May 25, but missed the ceremony because of track nationals.

Oawster got her discus gold medal — and fourth All-American in designation — by throwing 160-4 at outdoor nationals in Geneva, Ohio, on May 23. She had thrown 168-0, top in the nation, in a qualifier just before nationals. That was her third trip to outdoor nationals; she was second as a junior with 162-7 at La Crosse, Wisconsin.

At indoor nationals, Oawster won shot put with a throw of 48-5 1/2 in Boston on March 9.

She placed fourth with

46-11 her junior year in Birmingham, Alabama.

Her career best was 49-11.

“I am very happy with the way I ended my college career,” she said. “I am humbled and honored that God blessed me with this outcome.”

After barely missing nationals in discus as a freshman, she tried to convince her coach to let her stop doing shot put, in order to maximize her discus prospects. “But he saw potential in me that I didn’t see then,” Oawster said. And sure enough, her shot put came around, too.

These last two national meets were a great way to go out.

“That was my last discus throw. It was a bittersweet moment walking off the track for the last time as an athlete,” Oawster said.

“It is time for me to move on, which will be a tough transition, but I’m excited to use everything I have learned to help coach athletes.”

Oawster got her degree in organizational communication with a minor in coaching.

She will stay in Eau Claire to work with Athletes in Action, a Christian group — “I will be helping athletes grow in their faith and learn how to bring God into their sport” — while also serving as a Bluegolds assistant coach.

She made AllAmerican four times despite her size, 5-foot8 and muscular but

lean. “I am one of the smaller collegiate throwers you will fi nd,” she cheerfully acknowledged.

In high school, Oawster placed sixth at state with 129-2 as a junior and 127-2 as a senior. She didn’t make her best throws at state.

Her career bests with the Cougars were 140-9 in discus and 37-4 1/2 in shot put. She played basketball through ninth grade but gave up the sport after having foot surgery.

At UWEC, working with veteran throws coach Paul Conlin and two other assistants who are prepping for Olympic trials, Roger Steen and Curt Jensen, Oawster vastly improved her technique.

She absorbed how to approach out of the back circle, how to sweep her legs, how to hit all the correct positions.

“They are all great coaches and I have learned so much from them,” she said.

“Throwing is a very technical sport, so every little detail matters.”

Also invaluable was the weight-room coaching. “I had not done much with weights in high school,” she said. At college, she not only got significantly stronger but learned how to pace the weight training so her throwing would peak at the end of the season.

The training was low reps, high weights, to build strength. Her personal bests in the weight room were 280 pounds in squat, 175 in bench and 175 in hang clean. She had to be smart though, nursing hip injuries from all the strenuous activity.

In the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic

Conference, Oawster was shot put champion as a senior after placing third twice, and won discus as a sophomore and junior, also placing second as a senior and fi fth as a sophomore.

“Eau Claire is in the best conference in the country for track, so I knew I would be throwing against the best,” said Oawster, who was recruited by head coach Chip Schneider.

After four intense years in a demanding individual sport, Oawster is ready to take it easy. Asked if she’d consider something like power lifting to stay in competitions, she said, “No, I think I’ve done enough lifting.

If I do anything from now on, it will be in rec leagues, like softball or basketball. Just for fun.”

Retired Air Force Sgts. Phil and Heather Erickson sailed for the fi rst time on White Bear Lake this May. They took off on an Aquarius 23-footer with the lake's only American Sailing Association (ASA) instructor, Tim Black.

Black, a White Bear Lake resident who grew up sailing on the St. Croix River, has been teaching 10 years for Northern Breezes Sailing School, which has several locations in Minnesota. It was his fi rst time bringing out veterans with the express purpose of determining how sailing can be therapeutic for those who have gone through trauma while serving their country. It's part of a new ASA program, Operation Vet Sail: A Salute at Sea, intended to combat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Ericksons, of East Bethel, retired after each served 20 years with the Air Force. They met while in training. The couple signed up for sailing lessons with the dream of moving south and traveling the Caribbean on a sailboat later in their retirement.

They received a $100 discount because they are veterans. Thom Burns, the owner of Northern Breezes Sailing School, has offered military veterans sailing lesson discounts for about a decade. The ASA's new program was inspired in part by his generosity and how he has seen sailing bring healing to veterans.

Burns, a retired Navy officer, drove ships for 10 years. He's been sailing for 40 years.

Heather, who worked in counterintelligence, said after an hour on the water that she believes sailing can be beneficial for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. She witnessed fi rsthand the aftermath of trauma many veterans face when deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. She investigated IED (improvised explosive device) sites where military members died.

Sailing requires concentration that helps prevent someone from having flashbacks.

“It keeps you in the now,” she noted.

“You have to stay present.” The peace and quiet and lack of traffic and loud noises is also helpful. “It helps kind of to keep you centered,” she said.

Although the Ericksons didn't take up sailing with the purpose to heal from trauma, they both experienced how it could be beneficial for veterans. Even something as simple

as a highway overpass can cause flashbacks for a veteran, Phil noted.

Out on the open water, there seemed to be no triggers for PTSD. Instead, the peace of nature surrounded them.

“I fi nd this endlessly fascinating — the sky and the clouds, the wind and the waves,” noted their instructor, Black. “Every day is different.”

Phil was a meteorologist in the Air Force. His weather-predicting skills will come in handy for sailing.

Burns said he has observed that today's veterans return more stressed than the days of his deployments. He said this may be because of multiple deployments over a short period of time. But he's seen how sailing can be therapeutic. It's a time to experience peace, he noted, and just listen to the waves on the boat. It also gives veterans a chance to rebuild their leadership skills by taking charge of the vessel. He enjoys listening to veterans’ stories when he teaches.

“It creates a nice environment where people can live without stress, even if it's only a few hours,” Burns said.

According to ASA, studies show that veterans heal through exposure to nature and the sea. A treatment named Nature Adventure Rehabilitation revealed after a year of sailing lessons, 22 veterans with PTSD demonstrated significantly lower PTSD and depression scores and higher social and emotional quality of life scores. The Boat Is Sailing, an Israeli nonprofit that takes veterans with PTSD sailing, models their program after a 2007 Israeli study that shows veterans experience a decrease in depression and functional problems along with improved self-esteem.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 11 to 20 percent of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD each year.

ASA schools will offer active and retired military members and their immediate families discounts for sailing instruction and certification through Veterans Day this year. ASA has 350 professionally accredited sailing schools across the world.

Schulte elected chair, Braastad vice chair of Anoka County Board Anoka County Commissioner Scott Schulte (District 7) was elected chair of the Anoka County Board of Commissioners for the remainder of 2019 at the board’s meeting May 28. Commissioner Julie Braastad (District 2) was elected vice chair.

Schulte resigned from his vice chair duties and took the chair post by unanimous vote.

Braastad was named vice chair by a 6-1 vote; Commissioner Mandy Meisner (District 4) had nominated Commissioner Matt Look (District 1) as vice chair, but her motion was not considered because it lacked a second.

SCHOOL BRIEFS Centennial School District needs tutors The Centennial School District needs 14 literacy tutors and three math tutors for the 2019-2020 school year, according to Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps. The area schools that have been awarded tutor positions include Centerville Elementary, Centennial Elementary, Blue Heron Elementary and Rice Lake Elementary.

Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps is seeking 1,700 tutors for the 2019-20 school year by asking residents to “Help Minnesota Be More. Give Your Time As A Tutor.” Both full-

and part-time tutors are being recruited to begin a year of paid service this fall. Reading Corps and Math Corps are statewide initiatives to help every Minnesota student become a successful reader by the end of third grade and proficient in math by the end of eighth grade.

Tutors are being sought for three different levels of commitment: 35, 25 or 18 hours a week.

Tutors receive a stipend every two weeks and

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • An officer responded to a property damage accident in the 7600 block of Main Street May 21. One of the drivers was cited for illegal passing and reckless driving.

• Officers received a phone call from a school in the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue May 21 about threats a student made to a teacher. Staff at the school wanted to make a report.

• An officer checked the area of I-35E and Ash Street for a possible gun on the shoulder of the road May 21. The item was not a gun.

• Officers responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the area of Ash Street and 20th Avenue May 21. One vehicle had to be towed from the scene and one of the drivers was cited for failure to drive with due care at a speed greater than reasonable.

• Officers responded to the report of a fire inside a residence in the 6800 block of Black Duck Drive May 22. The fire was extinguished and investigated.

• Officers responded to a suspicious male who was seen tampering with employee

vehicles at a local business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive May 22. The adult male was arrested and booked into the Anoka County Jail for possession of a controlled substance and tampering with a motor vehicle.

• An officer responded to a residence in the 500 block of Lois Lane regarding damage to property May 22. The officer documented the incident and there is no suspect information at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer received a report of the theft of a license plate from the 8000 block of Aenon Place May 23.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 200 block of Main Street May 23. The officer conducted a commercial vehicle inspection and the vehicle and trailer were placed out of service for numerous violations, including inoperative horn and windshield wipers, illegal tires, improper load securement and nonconforming steering assembly.

• A trailer was reported stolen from the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue May 23.

The theft occurred sometime between May 9 and May 23. The incident is currently under investigation.

• An officer found a cell phone and wallet in the 1500 block of Birch Street May 23. The officer located the owner and returned the property.

• Officers observed and stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 6900 block of I-35E May 24. The driver was detained and cited for several traffic offenses, including speeding, open bottle violation, transporting a loaded firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• An officer was dispatched to a damage to mailbox complaint in the 1200 block of Chokecherry Road May 26. The suspect was located and is working with the owner to replace the damaged box.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of West Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines May 22. The driver was subsequently arrested on an outstanding warrant and for possession of a controlled substance.

• Officers responded to a phone call fraud report in the 40 block of Inner Drive in Circle Pines May 22. The caller advised she was fraudulently scammed out of

money from a computer online scam.

• Officers were dispatched to a report of oil in a retaining pond and drainage ditch in the area of Flowerfield Road and Hamline Avenue in Lexington May 23. The state duty officer was advised about the situation for hazardous material cleanup. The source of the oil is still under investigation.

• A dog bite report from the 1800 block of Center Street in Centerville was received May 25. The quarantine process was started and vaccination records are pending.

• Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Lexington Avenue and Lovell Road in Circle Pines May 25. The driver was subsequently arrested for DWI. • Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Canterbury Road in Circle Pines May 27 on a report of a vandalized vehicle. The case has been referred to the county Criminal Investigation Division.

• Officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Restwood Road and Lake Drive in Lexington May 27. The driver was subsequently arrested for fourth-degree DWI.

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its May 28 meeting: • Approved the consent agenda, which included a peddler license for Garage Coating of Min-

City Engineer Diane Hankee explained the project would include: adding separate internal fluoride and chlorine rooms; a new pitched shingled roof and exterior siding; replacement of doors; new bituminous driveway and expanded pavement behind the well house; replacement of chemical feed equipment; replacement of HVAC systems; replacement of control panel and other electrical equipment; and replacement of well instrumentation. The budget for the project is $225,000; monies would come out of the water operating fund.

• Approved the plans and specifications for the Northeast Lino Lakes Drainage Improvement

Project. On June 27, 2016, the City Council accepted the feasibility study for the Northeast Drainage Outlet to Peltier Lake. The study analyzed options for providing a surface water outlet for a landlocked area of approximately 1,300 acres.

The project requires the land acquisition of fee title and both permanent and temporary easements. Three properties are affected by the improvement. Grochala explained the city made offers on the properties back in February, but no agreements have been made.

“We feel we have made offers for fair market value and we want to continue working with property owners,” he said. To ensure that ongoing property negotiations do not jeopardize the timeline for project construction and that the city can meet obligations under the Watermark Master Development contract, it is necessary to commence with eminent domain proceedings, Grochala said.

The city attorney will seek District Court approval to acquire parcels by eminent domain and establish a possession date. Grochala said under the current timeline, the city would anticipate possession by September.

Mayor Jeff Reinert said, “Both property owners want to sell, and we want to buy. We made an offer of what I think is above market right now. In one case, the owner won't tell us what they want. It (eminent domain) is a frustrating thing for city councils to do because no city councils want to.”

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, at City Hall.

WWII correspondent covered D-day like no other In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D-day, we are running a column

by Ernie Pyle, considered one of history’s greatest war correspondents.

His column, written six days after the Normandy invasion, and photographs of Pyle, have been made available by the National Newspaper Association for reprinting.

We chose a column called “A Pure Miracle” to commemorate June 6, 1944, when more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavilyfortified French coastline.

More than 9,000 soldiers were killed or wounded fighting Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy.

Pyle, 44, was later killed by a Japanese machine gun on the tiny Pacific island of le Shima in 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa. His New York Times obituary said his syndicated columns were delivered to more than 14 million homes at the time of his death. Pyle won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his newspaper accounts of “dogface” infantry soldiers.

A Pure Miracle NORMANDY BEACHHEAD, June 12, 1944 – Due to a lastminute alteration in the arrangements, I didn’t arrive on the beachhead until the morning after D-day, after our first wave of assault troops had hit the shore.

By the time we got here the beaches had been taken and the fighting had moved a couple of miles inland. All that remained on the beach was some sniping and artillery fire, and the occasional startling blast of a mine geysering brown sand into the air. That plus a gigantic and pitiful litter of wreckage along miles of shoreline.

Submerged tanks and overturned boats and burned trucks and shell-shattered jeeps and sad little personal belongings were strewn all over these bitter sands. That plus the bodies of soldiers lying in rows covered with blankets, the toes of their shoes sticking up in a line as though on drill. And other bodies, uncollected, still sprawling grotesquely in the sand or half hidden by the high grass beyond the beach.

That plus an intense, grim determination of work-weary men to get this chaotic beach organized and get all the vital supplies and the reinforcements moving more rapidly over it from the stacked-up ships standing in droves out to sea.

Now that it is over it seems to me a pure miracle that we ever took the beach at all. For some of our units it was easy, but in this special sector where I am now our troops faced such odds that our getting ashore was like my whipping Joe Louis down to a pulp.

In this column I want to tell you what the opening of the second front in this one sector entailed, so that you can know and appreciate and forever be humbly grateful to those both dead and alive who did it for you.

more enemy troops than we had in our assault waves.

The advantages were all theirs, the disadvantages all ours. The Germans were dug into positions that they had been working on for months, although these were not yet all complete. A one-hundred-foot bluff a couple of hundred yards back from the beach had great concrete gun emplacements built right into the hilltop.

These opened to the sides instead of to the front, thus making it very hard for naval fire from the sea to reach them.

They could shoot parallel with the beach and cover every foot of it for miles with artillery fire.

Then they had hidden machine-gun nests on the forward slopes, with crossfire taking in every inch of the beach. These nests were connected by networks of trenches, so that the German gunners could move about without exposing themselves.

Throughout the length of the beach, running zigzag a couple of hundred yards back from the shoreline, was an immense V-shaped ditch fifteen feet deep.

Nothing could cross it, not even men on foot, until fills had been made. And in other places at the far end of the beach, where the ground is flatter, they had great concrete walls. These were blasted by our naval gunfire or by explosives set by hand after we got ashore.

Our only exits from the beach were several swales or valleys, each about one hundred yards wide. The Germans made the most of these funnel-like traps, sowing them with buried mines. They contained, also, barbed-wire entanglements with mines attached, hidden ditches, and machine guns firing from the slopes.

This is what was on the shore. But our men had to go through a maze nearly as deadly as this before they even got ashore. Underwater obstacles were terrific. The Germans had whole fields of evil devices under the water to catch our boats. Even now, several days after the landing, we have cleared only channels through them and cannot yet approach the whole length of the beach with our ships. Even now some ship or boat hits one of these mines every day and is knocked out of commission.

The Germans had masses of those great six-pronged spiders, made of railroad iron

and standing shoulder high shoulder-high, just beneath the surface of the water for our landing craft to run into. They also had huge logs buried in the sand, pointing upward and outward, their tops just below the water.

Attached to these logs were mines.

In addition to these obstacles they had floating mines offshore, land mines buried in the sand of the beach, and more mines in checkerboard rows in the tall grass beyond the sand.

And the enemy had four men on shore for every three men we had approaching the shore.

And yet we got on.

Beach landings are planned to a schedule that is set far ahead of time. They all have to be timed, in order for everything to mesh and for the following waves of troops to be standing off the beach and ready to land at the right moment.

As the landings are planned, some elements of the assault force are to break through quickly, push on inland, and attack the most obvious enemy strong points. It is usually the plan for units to be inland, attacking gun positions from behind, within a matter of minutes after the first men hit the beach.

I have always been amazed at the speed called for in these plans. You’ll have schedules calling for engineers to land at H-hour plus two minutes, and service troops at H-hour plus thirty minutes, and even for press censors to land at H-hour plus seventy-five minutes. But in the attack on this special portion of the beach where I am – the worst we had, incidentally – the schedule didn’t hold.

Our men simply could not get past the beach. They were pinned down right on the water’s edge by an inhuman wall of fire from the bluff.

Our first waves were on that beach for hours, instead of a few minutes, before they could begin working inland.

You can still see the foxholes they dug at the very edge of the water, in the sand and the small, jumbled rocks that form parts of the beach.

could. Men were killed as they stepped out of landing craft.

An officer whom I knew got a bullet through the head just as the door of his landing craft was let down. Some men were drowned.

The first crack in the beach defenses was finally accomplished by terrific and wonderful naval gunfire, which knocked out the big emplacements. They tell epic stories of destroyers that ran right up into shallow water and had it out point-blank with the big guns in those concrete emplacements ashore.

When the heavy fire stopped, our men were organized by their officers and pushed on inland, circling machine-gun nests and taking them from the rear.

As one officer said, the only way to take a beach is to face it and keep going. It is costly at first, but it’s the only way. If the men are pinned down on the beach, dug in and out of action, they might as well not be there at all. They hold up the waves behind them, and nothing is being gained.

Our men were pinned down for a while, but finally they stood up and went through, and so we took that beach and accomplished our landing. We did it with every advantage on the enemy’s side and every disadvantage on ours. In the light of a couple of days of

retrospection, we sit and talk and call it a miracle that our men ever got on at all or were able to stay on.

Before long it will be permitted to name the units that did it. Then you will know to whom this glory should go. They suffered casualties.

And yet if you take the entire beachhead assault, including other units that had a much easier time, our total casualties in driving this wedge into the continent of Europe were remarkably low – only a fraction, in fact, of what our commanders had been prepared to accept.

And these units that were so battered and went through such hell are still, right at this moment, pushing on inland without rest, their spirits high, their egotism in victory almost reaching the smart-alecky stage.

Their tails are up. "We’ve done it again," they say. They figure that the rest of the army isn’t needed at all. Which proves that, while their judgment in this regard is bad, they certainly have the spirit that wins battles and eventually wars.

This past weekend got off to a thundery start with evening thunderstorms this past Friday, then overnight on early Saturday morning, but by the time we woke the storms had moved off to our east. The humid weather conditions that ended the week were replaced by cooler drier air as the high only reached into the low 70’s. One thing that did remain was the smoke from the distant Canadian fires that first appeared back on Thursday, May 30. A shift in the upper winds should move it off this week. After over 6 inches of rain in May, my lawn is green and lush and got its much needed first cutting.

“With each pedal stroke and fundraising dollar, our cyclists are bringing us closer to our ultimate fi nish line — a world free of MS.” C.H. Robinson MS 150 Ride is one of more than 70 rides across the country hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and served as the fl agship Bike MS event. It fi rst took place in 1980.

Two hundred cyclists rode from Minneapolis to Duluth and raised $33,000. This year, more than 80,000 people are expected to participate in Bike MS nationwide.

Dolezalek, senior director of engineering at Banner Engineering, heard about Bike MS shortly after becoming employed at Banner Engineering. For many years now, the company has pulled a team together to participate in the event. “We have been able to come up with a good team. The size has gone up and down over the years,” he said. “At one point we had a team of 70 people, but that is down
