School board continues equity discussion

The Centennial School Board has agreed to take a brief pause on a proposed joint powers agreement (JPA) and contract with Equity Alliance MN (EAMN). The board also questioned whether sending out a survey on the district’s equity journey was the right approach, but ultimately decided to move forward with it.

The school board reviewed its public forum guidelines and continued the equity discussion at its work study session last week. Although equity has been a goal of the district since it adopted its strategic plan in 2016, the topic most recently surfaced at the May 10 school board meeting when a crowd of about 80 people attended, many of them to voice their displeasure with a possible JPA and contract with EA-MN to perform an equity audit.

The board did not take action that night, but rather decided to pause and to continue the conversation. The district then sent out a message to families, explaining that a survey regarding the district’s equity journey would be distributed via email by June 5.

At the June 1 work session, Superintendent Brian Dietz explained that the reason for the night’s discussion was to give the board an opportunity to discuss the topic with one another and see where the conversation lead. “Just hearing each other is important right now,” he said.

How it started

Tuohy, 58, said he was a relatively healthy person for the majority of his life, but he has always had diabetes. He was always careful to go to his yearly physicals, but many of the doctors didn’t take the time to talk to him or talk about his hypertension.

“In today’s medicine, you are in and out. They don’t take the time to talk with you,” Tuohy said. “It

just happened to be that one day I stumbled into a doctor that said, ‘Your kidney functions are depleted,’ and so I started listening to this doctor.”

Tuohy purchased Pizza Man in 2013.

H20 for Life inspires youth to become global citizens A program at Centennial Middle School (CMS) is continuing to engage, educate and inspire youth to become global citizens.

CMS is one of the original H20 for Life schools. H20 for Life was founded by Patty Hall in 2007.

The nonprofit organization offers service-learning opportunities to inspire youth to take action to solve the global water crisis by raising awareness and funds to support implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene education

projects for global partner schools.

“They (middle schoolers) are often so busy with sports and friends that they don’t look beyond our own community,” said CMS teacher Anne Thomsen. “I think they are at an age now where they can learn about what is going on in world around them. We try to help them become more of a global citizen, knowing that not only do they have to take care of themselves, their family and their community, but even as 12-yearolds, they can make an impact on kids in Africa.”

Since 2007, CMS has participated in a service-learning project every year and raised $61,818 for the organization. Nearly 1 million students from H20 for Life schools have supported water, sanitation and hygiene education projects for partner schools in the developing world.

“What we really like about H20 for Life is that we know that every penny that the kids raise goes directly to the project that we are sponsoring,” Thomsen said.

Chair Suzy Guthmueller kicked off the equity discussion by sharing a video of students at Clarksville Elementary School (Indiana) singing “We Are the World.” After the video played, she said, “It really hit me … this is what we’ve been missing this year. I just wanted to share the joy that we missed this year. I know that could have been our kids out there. That’s what we are here for. Those little kiddos are resilient. It’s been a crazy year, but they keep plugging away.”

We care about each other here, and I feel like we have lost a little bit of that in the controversy this past year,” she said. She shared some programs that the district already has in place that can be built upon going forward, including Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID); Positive Behavioral Interventions Support (PBIS); World’s Best Workforce; Odyssey program; Lunch Energize Achieve Participate (LEAP), and more.

“There is a lot that we are already doing that I wanted to remind us of,” she said.

Guthmueller said she dived into the equity

audit results prepared

by EA-MN for White Bear Lake Area Schools, which found there were achievement disparities, discipline disparities and relationship/ communication disparities.

“I personally don’t feel like any of those were ‘aha’ moments,” she said. “Can we get better in some of those areas, of course we can. … But to spend money to do an equity audit and that’s what we get, that might not be where we want to spend our money.”

School board Director Stephanie Carlson said she agrees the district is already doing a lot, but more can be done. She said she is also in favor of a contract with EA-MN. “The misinformation that is circling around fully illustrates why we need this equity work to continue... We need to stay strong, remember the facts, and support Superintendent Dietz and (Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Scott) Johnson and all the administrators in the work that they have been working on for years.”

She added, “I’m asking you administrators to please fight for it, do your best to convince people why we need this... This is the most important decision we will make as board members. It will have a

tremendous impact on our reputation.”

Director Tom Knisely said all the work the district is doing won’t matter if there isn’t accountability. “If someone says or does something that is racist, we hold that individual accountable for their actions. That is the strongest, best way to send the signal that racism, sexism, homophobia, whatever form of harassment, is not tolerated in Centennial Schools,” he said.

In terms of the equity audit, Knisely suggested the district consider hiring a qualified independent contractor.

School board Clerk Kathryn Timm shared her thoughts. “As a lawyer, I look at conflict differently from most people. I’m really pretty tough in how I look at conflict. I’m direct. I’m not Minnesota nice. Part of what we have been dealing with for past three weeks is that not all of us deal with conflict in the same way,” she said.

“I don’t care if people are happy with our decision, I care if they are unhappy with our decision. We are a board that was elected to do the best thing for our district. It is really important that we hear the evidence and make our decision based on evidence.”

saying listening session, survey, take a pause, but that’s where we went …” she said. “If the purpose is to gather more information to make a decision, I personally don’t need that.

I think there is value in doing a survey, but I don’t need it to make a decision.”

Linser said the survey could be an opportunity to hear from the voices that hadn’t been heard yet. “It can be a data point, not a decision-maker,” she said.

Ultimately, a few school board members scheduled a meeting June 3 and decided to move forward with the survey. Krista Bergert, director of communication and public outreach, said students in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to voluntarily take the survey this week.

A survey for staff and families is also planned, but a date has not been set for when it will be released.

Guthmueller said she would like to see the survey sent out to students, parents, staff and community members, not just Centennial parents.

“What is the end game we are trying to get from this? I want to make sure what we don’t do is send out a survey and get the same thing we have been hearing …” she said. “We need to ask questions to get information that is going to be new to us.

There are probably people in the middle that we haven’t heard from. We need information from all of the players.”

Carlson said she was not convinced the survey was a good idea.

Timm thought the survey would be a bit repetitive to what the equity audit would do. “I don’t necessarily think I need a survey to tell me what I’m going to do now. I do think we unfortunately made some errors in messaging by

At the June 1 Centennial School Board work session, a couple of changes were made to the public forum guidelines. The main one is people will now need to email a request to address the board on an item on the agenda by 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting.

Previously, the guidelines did not specify a time, but rather stated “before the meeting.”

Additional language, taken directly from the district’s Public Participation in School Board Meetings Policy No. 206, will also be added to the public forum guidelines. (The revised guidelines will be available on the district website.) The district also plans to create a district email account, where the public can submit comments to the board.

Director Sue Linser said, “We need to focus on our mission. Equity work is continuous improvement; it is not one and done.” She said she did feel the district should pursue an equity audit but did not offer an opinion as to whether that should be EA-MN or another entity.

Treasurer Chris Bettinger said, “On May 9, I feel like we knew what we were doing … I still believe that what we were doing is correct. We need to keep moving forward.”

Bettinger said he didn’t have a problem with EA-MN performing the equity audit, but he would also be open to another entity performing the audit. He did think the audit was necessary.

Johnson explained that the reason district staff were recommending EA-MN was because the staff have responded well to the required teacher training provided by the organization. “Until the May 10 meeting, I hadn’t heard anything about EA-MN that raised any concerns.”

The board also discussed the equity survey at length.

Some board members questioned about whether it was necessary, while others thought it was a good idea.

hroughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, the last week is here or near to put a close to one heck of an unusual school year. What does this mean? It means fewer buses on our neighborhood streets and more kids out riding bikes, rollerblading and skateboarding. Kids are heading to golf courses, baseball diamonds, lakes and beaches. You’re likely to see them off to their first jobs mowing lawns, babysitting, dog walking, doing yard work, coaching, refereeing games, delivering newspapers and even volunteering. As you pour your morning cup of coffee or blend a protein shake, start visualizing where kids could be on your drive to work. Think about where they might be crossing streets. Also be aware that there are more high schoolers on the roads driving to jobs and various activities. Please - as you get into your car take extra care and give them a break. Consider leaving early to allow time to your drive. As always, don’t look at texts when you’re behind the wheel. As we settle into summer, stay alert, take it slow, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the season.

Skateboarding is not a crime I enjoyed skateboarding as a kid and love to see the variety of skateboards now– from custom long boards, park boards Carter Johnson hand-built and mini banana boards to electric boards and one-wheels. I recently ran into a group of skateboarders downtown and asked them if they could do an ollie kick flip. They all quickly performed the trick at a variety of levels.

At my skateboarding peak this trick was the one I always wanted to perfect. They told me afterward they assumed I stopped because I was going to yell at them like everybody else does. They have taken the brunt and been given a bad name because of the few skateboarders who have misbehaved or damaged property in the past. I urge adults in our community to consider a different approach. Ask questions, listen and learn. It has been said kids will reciprocate the respect you show them. If this is true, we need change our approach. Compliment them, show them respect, and set an example for them about being kind. Treat them as you would like to be treated, or how you hope your children and grandchildren would be treated.

Give them the benefit of the doubt and don’t assume they are all out causing trouble.

This generation of kids hasn’t had to walk to school uphill both ways two miles in the snow, but they have a different set of challenges to navigate. The internet and social media is the wild west and anything can be said with little to no guidelines, laws or monitoring.

I remember hearing a speaker on the topic who once said to make comments online like you’re talking to your grandmother. We all need a positive support network regardless of our age.

Local inventions Some say America was built in the garage. When we look at local companies that were founded out of a garage or closets. Big companies like Microsoft, Apple and Gateway come to mind. Companies like Fulton Beer, Hed Cycle and Infinite Campus come to mind locally. A few years ago, we did a story about the patents that had been issued throughout our communities.

In Birchwood, Dellwood, Mahtomedi, North Oaks and surrounding areas, the number was impressive.

Over the years the paper has covered most of these new businesses and inventions. New businesses create jobs and build our local economy. They provide a tax base which supports our infrastructure along with fun projects and social services. Without a new influx of small business and startups we can’t provide services at the same level. So let’s encourage local entrepreneurship – support the businesses out there providing jet ski food delivery, junk removal, lawn services, healthy popsicles, homemade beauty products and Bloody Mary’s. Let’s help keep the best and brightest here in our community by supporting them.

Least productive legislative session

pring’s warm temperatures and sunshine have brought a badly needed refresh. I look forward to seeing many of you at the countless festivals, parades and fairs this summer, including the Anoka County Fair (July 20-25) and the Washington County Fair (Aug. 4-8). As always, please feel free to let me know what is on your mind, I am happy to help.

Lawmakers recently wrapped up the least productive legislative session in nearly four decades with zero budget bills reaching Governor’s Legislator the desk during the 2021 regular Lingo session. This Donald Raleigh stunning lack of productivity sounds just as bad as I write this as it did to me on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Budget negotiations between the House, Senate and Gov. Walz have been impacted by significant fractures within the House Democrat majority’s caucus. One area of disagreement within their caucus centers on those that support police funding and reimbursement

to jurisdictions that assisted Minneapolis with security during the Chauvin trial and those that are opposed.

Other issues that have led to the budget stalemate include Democrats’ insistence on raising significant taxes at a time when Minnesota has a multi-billiondollar budget surplus. This is the largest surplus in recent memory and many, including myself, cannot in good conscience support any tax increases.

The government, like families, must live within its means and lawmakers need to make sure that government shares in the sacrifices that so many had to endure in 2020.

Should we invest in education, health care, roads and bridges?

Absolutely.

However, we need to do so in a manner that is paid for, long term. As a business owner, I do not make decisions based on how much I have in the bank. That is no way to run a healthy company.

Instead, we must look at what we have today, what we project we will have in the next several years, and how we should invest our limited funds. Only then should we make budget decisions.

In addition to dollars and cents, we must continue working to end the Governor’s emergency powers and make sure the legislature has oversight and control over every penny of federal stimulus

dollars coming into the state. It is the job of the legislature—not the Governor—to appropriate money.

Emergency powers are an important part of our constitutional Republic, but they are a tool that should only be used in the initial response to an emergency. We are way past that phase of the pandemic and it’s past time for these powers to end.

Finally, I expect that the legislature will provide tax conformity here in Minnesota as it relates to the federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) money that was sent to struggling businesses. These businesses were required to spend PPP money on payroll so that Minnesotans could stay employed during the pandemic.

Without conformity, businesses will be required to pay thousands in state taxes on what were supposed to be 100% forgivable loans.

It looks like we will return for a special session no later than June 14th to pass the state’s two-year budget. Vote no on equity audit

An April news story from White Bear Lake schools that ran on the alphanewsmn.com website clarified the truth behind a widely reported racial incident at White Bear Lake Area Schools. The investigation there reveals a black female student from WBL high school created an Instagram account and sent racist messages to the Black Excellence Club, of which she is a member. A white girl, also a student at WBL and founder of a conservative club, was blamed for the messages.

Can we expect similar incidents at Centennial if the school board votes to accept consulting services from Equity Alliance MN, the same vendor used by WBL? An “equity audit” report to the WBL district, available on its website, appears short on data and long on feelings. Many comparisons were made between students of color and white students. The report includes a quote implying that the education system is "fundamentally inequitable" and "unfair."

A "color-blind" approach by teachers was presented as a negative idea. Instead of racial healing, the district seems to be more divided than ever.

Reviewing the performance of all students and helping increase educational excellence for all must be the goal! Equity audits, besides being costly, have an inherent bias about them, designed to pit white students, teachers and staff against people of color. How does that help any of us?

Will this help the white girl in this story get her reputation back?

I urge the Centennial School Board to vote “no” on an equity audit here.

Julia Anderson and the entire Powerpack Team Learning about equity is not a threat Having represented part of the Centennial School District in the Legislature more than a decade ago, I took notice at the recent school board discussion about contracting with Equity Alliance Minnesota to develop an equity plan.

I was struck by the opposition from former State Rep. Linda Runbeck, who stated, “We do not need these outside experts. They do not know us, they don’t know our kids, they don’t know our culture. They want to change our culture from the ground up.” Her invitation to other opponents asked people to “learn how this indoctrination of cultural Marxism is intended to separate your kids from their whiteness …”

I grew up in the state of Virginia and attended kindergarten shortly after the county desegregated the public schools. Our school board had reminded

everyone who was in charge by naming new schools after Confederate generals. U.S. Highway 1 was renamed for Jefferson Davis. Back then, when someone said they feared for the survival of their “culture,” they were the words of white supremacists who would send their kids to private schools before they would let them attend school with nonwhite students.

Communities that choose isolation will forever be a step behind. They will struggle to attract investment and new talent. Societies that embrace new ideas and new people tend to thrive, grow and prosper. They are more resilient in times of economic change and are more likely to create culture that is greater than the sum of their parts.

If you think you will lose your position at the top of American society as a white American, fear not. An equitable community just means that you will no longer be alone. It can be hard to hear that your actions—or more likely, your inaction—have kept people of color from joining you. It was for me. Learning about equity is not a threat. It makes you a more complete citizen of this country. Ask your friends in the Forest Lake and in other metro districts that have used Equity Alliance Minnesota how things are going. You will be fine.

Get back to basics

I am a parent of three boys, one who currently is enrolled at Centennial High School. I have concerns about what my boys will be taught if the school board votes to contract with Equity Alliance Minnesota.

Recently, my son came home from school after being taught completely inaccurate and heavily biased information in a PowerPoint presentation about the Daunte Wright shooting. It included many of the talking points of Black Lives Matter Inc., which holds many of the same values as Equity Alliance Minnesota. Students should not learn a biased view of BLM or anti-police views at school.

The Black Lives Matter website has been very up-front about its mission to “disrupt the nuclear family,” among other things. The nuclear family is what has held societies together, yet BLM believes it is another example of a racist institution because its origins are in European and Western civilization.

Black lives do matter, along with Asian, Native American and blue lives.

As you read this, you might wonder where BLM came into it? A quick look at the Equity Alliance Minnesota Facebook page would explain this. As stated before, these two organizations are in lockstep with each other ideologically.

Children should not be taught views like this at a public school. This is political indoctrination. I did not expect this from Centennial. The district says they are not promoting critical race theory, but the materials they’ve recommended for teachers’ professional development (which didn’t appear on their website until recently) were full-blown critical race theory. That is what a contract with Equity Alliance Minnesota will bring.

While a contract with Equity Alliance Minnesota sounds like a good thing on the surface, I believe more divide will come of it. Couple this with a school district budget that has a projected deficit in excess of $4 million. Why experiment with this at a cost of over $100,000? I believe we should get back to basics.

Students need to learn about respect regardless of race, not because of race.

Kenneth “Kenny” Ross

(1948-2021) Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kenny was the 2nd of 7 children. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Clifford and Annie Ross, and just recently by his brother Cliff Jr. Kenny is survived by his sister, Pat Ross, and brothers, Chris (Jeanine), Dan, Randy and Tim (Kathie). He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. Kenny was a very gentle and kind person, always eager to meet new people and quick with a handshake or a hug (he liked the hugs!) He most always had a smile, asked people how they were and was genuine in every aspect of his life. Kenny knew how to love unconditionally, knew how to forgive and made anywhere he was a much better place. Kenny was very close to his family and also very popular with people of the community near the family store (Ross’ Corner), which he worked in for many years.

Kenny was a 1968 Graduate of Forest Lake High School and also a former member of the Lino Lakes Lions Club.

In his early years, Kenny was a victim to Polio, which slowed him down. Later in his life, he was critically injured in a car accident, which slowed him down. Over the years, Kenny suffered many falls, usually resulting in a broken bone somewhere in his body, which slowed him down. None of these setbacks ever stopped Kenny. He persevered and moved forward, still eager to meet and greet people, both friends and strangers. He loved to go to out to eat, to fish or watch the MN Twins and MN Vikings. He loved to watch professional wrestling.

He loved playing cards, especially 500 Rummy. He absolutely loved Bingo. When Kenny moved into the Lino Lakes Assisted Living, he shined! Here he had all sorts of new people to meet and greet.

And if you ever tried to call Kenny there, good luck!

He was usually upstairs, playing Bingo or Bunco where he loved to be, in a social setting. God got a good one in Kenny. He’s now pain free, he’s not sick or confined to a wheelchair. He is with his parents and brother, and is walking freely with the Angels, along with many others who knew him and loved him as well. Kenny will be greatly missed and he was loved by all.

Long Walk to Water,” which is based on the true story of Salva, one of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan, refugees who cover Africa on foot as they search for their families and a safe place to stay.

“We talk about the water crisis not only in Africa, but in our own country as well … the drought out West, the Flint, Michigan, water crisis,” Thomsen explained. “They get a really good understanding of how important water is.”

These lessons are especially important in middle school, Thomsen said, when the kids are impressionable.

All grade levels participate in the fundraising efforts. Each year, students choose which project they would like to support, sometimes more than one, depending on how much money is raised.

On average, students raise about $3,000 a year. A record high was nearly $10,000.

Raising funds this year was, of course, a challenge. The students were unable to do a lot of their fundraising efforts, including the popular and competitive Penny War, where students place coins in jars around the school. Pennies count as points for you, whereas dollar bills and silver coins count as points against you in the tally.

Despite the challenges, the students were able to shift their fundraising efforts online and raise $2,000 for a school in Uganda’s Kakiri community.

The project will equip the school with a rainwater collection system to ensure the school can continue to meet the water needs of its growing student population and ensure that water is safe for drinking, handwashing and more.

Thomsen recalled one student, Max Sullivan, donated $100. He decided that safe water for kids was more important than purchasing electronics.

“These kids have really taken a personal interest in this. They take it into their own hands and run with it,” Thomsen said. “It has been really enlightening for the kids. I think all of us are so used to our own little world until you see what else is out there.”

Student Grace Dinh said, “I never knew that little girls were walking for hours and hours just for water. It makes me grateful for all that I have, especially water.”

purchased the business, Tuohy’s health problems began to spiral.

It all started with a blister on his foot, which became infected. The infection ultimately reached his bone. Eventually, Tuohy had to have one of his toes amputated. He was in and out of the hospital with infections and decided in 2015 to have his left leg amputated below the knee to keep the infections at bay.

“It was really the best thing that could have ever happened to me for two years,” he explained. For a while, his health problems seemed to subside. Tuohy was on a diabetes medication that was not conducive to his health, and is likely what led to his bladder cancer. A rather large tumor needed to be removed.

Thankfully, the cancer has not returned.

“The kidneys were just this problem,” he said. “Being diabetic, you always want to watch your kidneys. They just slowly kept creating their own drama.”

In need of a kidney

For the past year, Tuohy has been traveling to a center for dialysis three times each week. A dialysis session takes four hours and 15 minutes. He is currently in the process of looking into the option of home dialysis, which he said would give him “a tremendous amount of freedom.”

Even though dialysis has improved the function of his kidneys, Tuohy knows he can’t do this forever. “It’s not for me. It is not something that I foresee myself doing for years and years,” he said.

His goal is to educate people about the need for living kidney donors. He

hopes that one day he will be lucky enough to receive a kidney.

So far, two potential donors have come forward, his daughter and a friend, but neither of them was a match. “That was the most unbelievable thing a human being could do for someone. I couldn’t believe that there was a person like that out there,” Tuohy said.

Community man

Tuohy, a Ham Lake resident, has made it his mission to support White Bear Lake and the surrounding communities.

“We have had a really good relationship with the community. I work hard to make sure the people we do business with know they are appreciated,” he said.

Over the years, Tuohy has been an avid supporter of local schools, law enforcement, theater, library and other small businesses.

White Bear Police Chief Julie Swanson explained that he has partnered with the department to provide pizzas for School Parent Safety Night as well as other events.

He has also hosted Cones with Cops every summer. “The event is such a great opportunity for the police to engage our community and local kids ... Having Farrell there to provide ice cream is an added bonus, because who doesn’t love ice cream?”

Swanson said.

“The White Bear Police Department has kept Farrell in our thoughts, and we are wishing for a positive outcome and continued strength.”

For now, Tuohy will remain on the waitlist, but he hopes he will find a living donor long before it is officially his turn.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Plea entered for Lino Lakes homicide

Nicholas Walter Zielinski, 43, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree intentional murder. According to the criminal complaint, a Lino Lakes man came home Aug. 27 to find two unknown individuals in his residence; one was later identified by authorities as Zielinski, a resident of Hermantown, Minnesota. After the individuals left, the man found his gravely injured 22-year-old son lying on the floor. The victim, Karl Mitchell Henderson, 22, had been shot in the abdomen and was declared dead by first responders. Zielinski’s next hearing has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, Zielinski could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

State Rep. Donald Raleigh (R-Circle Pines) was recently appointed to serve on the Midwestern Legislative Conference (MLC) Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. ORGAN DONATION INFORMATION To donate a kidney, you must be in good physical and mental health. As a general rule, you should be 18 years or older. You must also have normal kidney function. There are some medical conditions that could prevent you from being a living donor.

These include having uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, HIV, hepatitis, or acute infections. Having a serious mental health condition that requires treatment may also prevent you from being a donor.

Directed donation is when the donor names a specific person who will receive the kidney. It is the most common type of living donation. Directed donations are often between blood relatives, like parents, siblings, or children. They can also occur between people with close personal relationships, such as a spouse, friend, or coworker. A nondirected donation is when the person does not name a specific person who will get the kidney. In this case, the donor is matched with someone in need.

Ex-Cougar’s prolific lacrosse journey ends on high note

Lacrosse has been Claire Carlson’s passion since seventh grade. That stage of her life recently ended, but not before the 2016 Centennial graduate enjoyed a much-decorated collegiate career at Dubuque, Iowa, and Aurora, Illinois.

Carlson got to quit on a good one this spring. She played in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time. In so doing, she raised her final career totals to 208 goals and 59 assists and was named conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second time, and all-conference for the fourth time.

“It feels different being done playing. I have constantly been training and going to practices and games or just being around my teammates for so many years,” said Carlson, who’ll turn 23 this month.

“I definitely wasn't ready to give up lacrosse. I feel like I have so much more to give and wish I could continue to play. There really isn't any

more opportunities for me to play. I would love to try and coach one day.”

The 5-foot-10 attacker was the second-leading scorer, with 48 goals and 19 assists, and the leader in ground balls with 42, for Aurora University, which went 11-4 overall and 5-0 in conference.

“We broke so many records this year,” Carlson mused, rattling off a series of “firsts” for the program — winning their conference, tying their record for wins, reaching the Sweet 16, and beating North Central, Carthage College and Carroll University, all for the first time.

In the NCAA tournament, the Spartans beat Carroll (Wisconsin) 13-8 and lost to Denison (Ohio) 16-5. They got some royal treatment normally reserved for big colleges; the team stayed in a hotel in Chicago for the first round, then flew to Lexington, Virginia, for the Sweet 16 round.

Carlson made first-team AllConference both years at the University of Dubuque. After transferring to Aurora University — in a Chicago suburb — she

was first-team All-Conference and conference Offensive Player of the Year in both 2019 and 2021.

The 2020 season ended after four games due to the pandemic, and she got another year of eligibility.

Carlson was first-team All-Region as a junior and second team as a senior. At each school, she was conference Rookie of the Year.

She was honored in three different allconferences: College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin

Cougars 4th in conference, advance in section with 2 wins The Centennial Cougars baseball team finished fourth in the 14-team Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC), then won two of three playoff games to stay alive in Section 7AAAA. The Cougars (17-6) beat Osseo 5-4 in the NWSC finale May 28, the winning run scoring when Caden Klebba was hit-by-pitch with bases loaded in the ninth, after Brady Ivory’s two-run double tied the game in the seventh.

Danny Howell won in relief, with three hitless innings, and was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Centennial was 9-4 in conference, behind Andover (10-3), Rogers (10-3) and Maple Grove (10-4).

In the section last week, the Cougars blanked Coon Rapids 2-0 on Wednesday with Xander Streit belting a two-run homer in the first. Hunter Belting tossed six scoreless innings

(eight strikeouts) and Chase Granzow closed in the 7th. Cardinal hurler Jack Vlasaty allowed just three hits and struck out 10.

Forest Lake (13-9) stymied Centennial 2-0 Thursday behind lefthander Gage Lund. Pitching well for the Cougars were Will Whelan (4 2/3 innings) and Granzow (2 1/3 innings), each allowing one run.

The Cougars downed Anoka 7-2 Saturday, scoring all seven runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by Jake Slipka and RBI hits by Streit, Whelan and Vinny Wry. Howell won in relief with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Ivory was the starter.

The Cougars needed two wins Monday evening to advance to finals slated for Tuesday evening.

One major experience was an international tournament in Prague, Czech Republic, in the summer of 2019. “Players from all over the U.S. were recruited,” she said. Along with placing fourth in the tournament, the group was able to tour Vienna, Prague, and Munich, Germany. “It was a really fun experience. We wore a USA jersey and played teams from all around the world.”

During her time at Centennial, Carlson was also in cross-country and hockey — the former, she said, to get in shape, and the latter to improve her hand-eye coordination. “While playing those sports, my only thought was lacrosse,” Carlson admits.

She had busy summer days, with cross-country captains practice in the morning, hockey summer training in the afternoon, lacrosse summer training right after hockey, then a 30-minute drive to her lacrosse travel team’s practice.

With the Cougars, she played on struggling teams until they turned the corner late in her senior year with three playoff wins and a 10-9 loss to Blaine in the section finals, finishing 9-8.

She led that team with 35 goals and 13 assists.

Her club team was Minnesota Lacrosse Academy, which journeyed to Chicago as well as the states of Virginia, Colorado and Florida for tournaments.

That’s where she got recruited.

Carlson majored in exercise science and minored in psychology and physiology. She will continue her education as she pursues a master’s of surgical assisting, a two-year program at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.

“I got into my dream medical program out in Virginia,” Carlson said, “so I will just be staying in shape on my own to help counter the stress of the program. But I plan to bring my stick so I can always play wall ball, or maybe there is a college/women's league out there I can play in.”

Cougars near state after 1-0, nine-inning win over Crimson Dominant pitching by Helene Krage and a clutch hit by Emma Hopkins helped Centennial softball pull within one win of the state softball tournament last week.

The top-seed Cougars beat Champlin Park 7-2, then squeezed past No. 2 Maple Grove 1-0 in nine innings in Section 5AAAA. “That was a battle. Helene’s been great, and their pitcher is really good, too. Our defense played really well,” Cougar coach Rick Thomas said.

Centennial (20-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 4A behind Stillwater, will have two chances to win once Thursday at home, starting 4 p.m.

Maple Grove, Spring Lake Park and Champlin Park are vying to be the other finalist.

Krage (11-1 with a 1.08 earned run average) gave up just five singles

and no walks, striking out eight, to outduel Maple Grove’s Isabella Daniels, who scattered seven hits and two walks, striking out four.

The Cougars almost won in the last of the seventh on Maple Grove’s squeeze bunt with bases loaded but the Crimson got Maddy Ringen at the plate on a close play.

Centennial had beaten Maple Grove 14-3 in conference but the No. 8 ranked Crimson (15-6) proved to be a tough out in the rematch.

Against Champlin Park, Krage threw four no-hit innings and went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Ella Fidler hit a two-run double, Bryn Ruberg was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Dockendorf pitched the last three innings.

The Centennial girls golf season ended at the Section 5AAA tournament Tuesday and Thursday on Links at Northfork in Ramsey. Three Cougars made the cut to play in the final 18 holes: Marina Allen, who shot 93-96189; Amanda Kufner 90-89-189; and Erin Haus 100-112212. The Cougars placed ninth of 13 teams. Maple Grove was champion.

Tennis: Cougar entrants reach 3rd round in section

Two of Centennial’s entrants in the Section 4AA individuals tennis tournament reached the third round last week before losing, which ended the Cougar season, on Tuesday, June 1. Sean Oslund bye, beat Caden Anderson of White Bear Lake 6-1, 6-1, and lost to St. Paul Central’s Riley Eddins 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Joaquin Bliss and Connor Johnson had a bye, beat Tartan’s Sebastian Chounlamontry and Quinn Stoerzinger 6-1, 6-1, and lost to Mahtomedi’s Dylan and Brandon Pham 6-0, 6-1.

Lacrosse: Cougar boys, girls both advance in sectionals

The Centennial lacrosse teams each won their firstround games in Section 7 last week and will pursue state berths this week. The Cougar boys (11-2 and ranked No. 10 in the state) beat Spring Lake Park 19-6

on Thursday (scoring data not available). Top-seeded, they hosted Chisago Lakes on Monday. If they won, they will host the finals Wednesday, 7 p.m. against Blaine or Duluth. The Cougar girls (12-2) topped Chisago Lakes 16-6 on Thursday with Ella O’Hearn notching six goals, and Callie Cody and Neila Haney four apiece. Seeded No. 3, the Cougars played at Andover on Monday. The winner faces No. 1 Champlin Park or Forest Lake in the finals, Wednesday, at high seed.

Track: Cougars back in pack at conference; sprinters shine

Junior sprinters Landen Liu and Emily Anderson scored the bulk of Centennial’s points in the Northwest Suburban Conference meets as the boys team placed 11th and the girls 12th among 14 teams.

Liu was the boys 200-meter champion with 22.78 seconds and placed fourth in the 100 with 11.32.

He also placed eighth in discus (128-0). Charlie Bolkcom finished seventh in pole vault (11-6).

Anderson was runner-up in both the girls 100 dash with 12.47 and the 200 with 26.87. (Park Center’s Laubenra Ben won both, plus the 400.)

Anderson took seventh in long jump (15-5 1/2).

Abby Wood placed seventh in the 3200 run (11:59.70). The 4x400 placed seventh with Claire

Zandstra, Anderson, Amelia Olson and Julie Zalewski (4:23.14). Top eight score points.

Team champions were the Blaine boys and the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony girls.

Boys golf: Centennial 3rd in section, 4th in conference

The Centennial boys golf team finished third among 11 teams in the Section 5AAA boys golf tournament, ending their season, after placing fourth in the Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC).

Three Cougars made all-conference — juniors Brody Pass (78.64 average) and Nicholas Nelson (78.80) and sophomore Peyton Blair (79.25). None advanced to state.

Maple Grove was section champion with 293-281-574, followed by Spring Lake Park (303-304-607) and the Cougars (312-313-625). They were the top three teams among six advancing to the second day in action Thursday and Friday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Pass led the Cougars, placing 11th with 73-79-152.

Nelson was 12th (82-73-155), Carter Korkowski 15th (7581-156), and Blair 21st (82-80-162).

Maple Grove was NWSC champion, followed by Spring Lake Park, Robinsdale Armstrong, and Centennial and Elk River tied for fourth, among 13 teams.

How quickly our fortunes can change. Three week dry period followed by one week wet period. Last weekend's cold followed up this past weekend's heat. I gotta say our recent string of 90º temperatures really didn't feel that bad. One reason was that the dew point, how much water was in the air, was relatively low. A July or August heat wave we'll have dew points in the mid to upper 70's which are very uncomfortable. This past week our dew points were in the low and mid 50's and creeping into the low 60's. If you were able to find some shade, it felt nice to be outside and relaxing. Enjoy the earliest sunrises and latest sunsets times of the year.

6 winners selected for Fete des Lacs logo competition

With the easing of COVID restrictions, Fete des Lacs will return July 13-18. This year’s theme is "Centerville Heroes.”

The first event of the annual celebration — the logo art design contest at Centerville Elementary School and Centennial Middle School — has already taken place. Nearly 100 students entered the competition.

At Centerville Elementary, the first-place winner was fourth grader Skyanne, and the second-place winner was fourth grader Bentley.

Fourth grader Tabitha received honorable mention. At Centennial Middle School, the first-place winner was sixth grader Radha, and the second-place winner was sixth grader Thomas. Sixth grader Denver received honorable mention.

First-place winners will receive $100, second-place winners will receive $50 and honorable mentions $25. In addition, both first-place logos will be featured on event T-shirts and the medallion for the medallion hunt.

This year’s Fete des Lacs will include a parade, fireworks, water ski show, live music, KidsFest, softball and more. For a full schedule of events, visit fetedeslacs.org.

All students, from preschool to fifth grade recently, participated in the Go-Around, an annual walk around Golden Lake to raise money for their school. Over $10,000 was raised.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer responded to a city park in the 700 block of Village Drive May 25 for a damage to property report. The incident is under investigation.

• An officer stopped to check on a male who appeared to be running after a vehicle in the area of 21st Avenue South and Northern Lights Boulevard May 25. The officer learned the male was on the phone with dispatch about a driving complaint. The officer was unable to contact the driver of the vehicle involved.

• An officer responded to a hit-and-run property damage accident at a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive May 25.

The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a residence in the 7800 block of Century Trail May 26 to arrest an adult male on an outstanding warrant. The adult male was arrested and an adult female was also arrested on two outstanding warrants, possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic needles and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both parties were booked into jail.

• An officer stopped a vehicle in the area of Hodgson Road and Birch Street May 27 that

had suspended registration and an inoperable brake light.

The adult male driver was subsequently arrested for gross misdemeanor no insurance, driving after revocation and displaying suspended registration. The male was booked at jail.

• A school resource officer is investigating a criminal sexual conduct incident that was reported by a student at the middle school May 27.

• Officers assisted the Centennial Lakes Police Department in locating a theft suspect near Centerville Road and Birch Street May 27. CLPD is handling the investigation.

• Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle with a slumper in a business parking lot in the 7500 block of Lake Drive May 27. The officers found the male had an outstanding warrant and was in possession of a controlled substance. The male was arrested and transported to jail.

• A resident in the 1100 block of Cripple Creek Pass reported vandalism to a home and a vehicle that appeared to be caused by paintballs May 29.

The case is under investigation.

• An officer stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of Ash Street May 29 because the adult male driver didn't have a driver's license. The male was arrested

and booked into jail for driving after revocation and no proof of insurance.

• A complainant on White Pine Road reported a dog at large had killed one of their chickens. It is unknown where the dog lives. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer received a mail theft report from a resident in the 300 block of Sioux Lookout May 30. Another mail theft was reported the same day in the 6600 block of Hokah Drive.

Officers checked the area and witnessed several open mailboxes. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a report of a personal injury accident in the 6100 block of Centerville Road May 31.

Officers located the vehicle and the driver was uninjured and arrested for DWI. The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An incident of motor vehicle tampering was reported in the 9000 block of Jackson Avenue in Lexington June 1.

• Suspicious activity was reported in the 6900 block of Eagle Trail in Centerville June 1.

• Officers were dispatched to the 10 block of Oak Ridge Trail in Centerville June 1 for an

aggressive dog. The owner was given a verbal warning.

• Officers received a mail theft report from a resident in the 8900 block of Syndicate Avenue in Lexington June 1. A package was reported stolen. There are no suspects at this time.

• Officers responded to a threat report/suspicious activity in the 3900 block of Restwood Road in Lexington June 1.

• An officer was dispatched to a fraud report in the 40 block of Pine Drive in Circle Pines June 1.

• Officers responded to the 9100 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington May 26 on a trespassing report. A female was panhandling and trespassing. Upon officer arrival, the female was leaving and advised by police not to return.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation in the area of Lake Drive and Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines May 27. An adult female was subsequently arrested for DWI. • An officer responded to the 1700 block of Main Street in Centerville May 27 on a suspicious activity report.

The caller advised there was a female living in the garage of her rental unit. Officers made contact with the female and requested she move along or stay in the house.

• Officers responded to a suspicious activity report in the 8900 block of Syndicate Avenue in Lexington May 27. The caller advised he was missing some items from his apartment, but his apartment was not broken into. The activity was determined to be suspicious, as the caller has reported the same occurrence several times before.

• A package theft was reported in the 7100 block of Mill Road in Centerville May 27. It was discovered there was an additional victim. Both victims had packages stolen from their front step. The estimated loss is $27. A suspect was subsequently located and arrested.

• Extra patrol was requested in the 8800 block of Dunlap Avenue in Lexington May 29.

• A dog bite was reported in the 0 block of Ridge Road in Circle Pines May 29. Officers took information and the case was forwarded on to the community service officer for follow-up.

• An officer observed a traffic violation near the intersection of Lake Drive and Griggs Avenue in Lexington May 30. An adult male drive was subsequently arrested for DWI. • Suspicious activity was reported in the 200 block of Galaxy Drive in Circle Pines May 31.

Cutter, a Chihuahua/Australian cattle dog/blue heeler mix, is originally from Texas. He’s about 3 years old and weighs 22 pounds. Upon arrival in Minnesota, he fit right in with his foster family. Cutter loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. When they don’t want to play, he’s content to entertain himself with his toys.

Cutter does prefer a quiet space to eat by himself. He can get a bit cranky if another dog approaches his food. But as a stray living on the streets, meals were never promised, so he’s used to protecting his food. Cutter loves a good cuddle session on the couch with his people, and he likes a nice warm bed to curl up in. He is good with other dogs, good with considerate kids, good with adults, likes car rides, is playful and likes to snuggle.
