Class of 2019 speaks themes of friendship, important lessons The following three speeches were given at Centennial High School's graduation ceremony Saturday, June 8, at Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

Every year students apply for a chance to speak at graduation. A committee of eight staff reviews the applications and looks at experience, uniqueness of the essay, speaking experience, student style/ presence and involvement/influence in school. This year, around 20 students applied and four students (three speeches) were selected.

Class of 2020 looks beyond themselves

Five members of the 2020 Centennial High School class were looking for ways to improve the community and stumbled across a national nonprofit organization called Lion's Heart. The fall of their freshman year, the boys founded the first chapter in Minnesota and named it Lino's Lions.

“Me and my group of buddies were just looking for ways to improve the community. We figured Lion's Heart was a wellknown organization, so we wanted to start our own chapter,” said Cole Jackson, who was a founding member. “We started out with five members and we have added some

and lost some.” Currently the group has nine members, many of whom have stuck around for three, going on four, years.

Lion's Heart was founded in 2004, by Terry Corwin and her son Spencer, then 13. While on a road trip, the mother and son were talking about avenues for Spencer and his friends to give back to the community. Terry concluded that there was not an organization in the area that provided a broadbased platform to do so.

The nonprofit organization mobilizes teen members to volunteer in their communities and thus develop leadership, empathy, humanity, passion and courage. In 2018, Lion's Heart had a total of 276 chapters operating in 32 states who volunteered 192,350

hours. Every member is required to put in a minimum of 30 hours of volunteer work a year.

North Oaks resident Chantel Scherman, formerly of Lino Lakes, is the chapter's class coordinator. Chantel said her son Rawley Scherman, the other founding member, has put in close to 120 hours this year.

Motorcyclist injured on I-35W Around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department, North Memorial Ambulance and the State Patrol responded to a crash involving a motorcycle on I-35W near the Main Street Exit.

Blaine teen drowns at Coon Lake Beach The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office responded to Coon Lake Beach in Columbus at 8:05 p.m. June 1 on a possible drowning. A 17-year-old male was later found by patrons of the beach and taken to shore. CPR was administered by citizens and deputies from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The male was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he was

southbound on I-35W, just north of the Main Street overpass, when traffic quickly slowed for a different crash.

The motorcyclists was not able to stop or maneuver in time and struck the vehicle ahead of him. The motorcyclist was alert and conscious at the time when the helicopter transported him to the hospital. The State Patrol is handling the investigation.

Lino Lakes domestic results in one dead At 4:43 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department responded to a residence in the 7000 block of Rice Lake Drive for a domestic escort in which a male resident was refusing access to the home.

Plea agreement and sentence reached in death of Blaine police officer On Tuesday, May 28, Callison Mae Olson, 18, was sentenced for the death of Steve Nanney and Susie Nanney in Sherburne County District Court. Olson was initially charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving. After much consultation with Steve and Susie’s families, an agreement was reached to dismiss one

POLITICAL BRIEF Craig Johnson announces run for county commissioner seat Craig Johnson, a 12-year Lino Lakes resident, recently announced his intention to run for Anoka County Commissioner - District 6 that includes the communities of Centerville, Circle Pines, Columbus, Lexington, Lino Lakes, Linwood Township and a portion of Blaine.

“The county has been successful over the past ten years providing valuable services to its residents while

keeping taxes relatively stable. Our community landscape is ever-changing and I am confident I can work with the six other commissioners to maintain a balanced approach with regards to providing services and common-sense budget policies,” he said.

LEGISLATIVE BRIEFS Education budget signed into law The bipartisan E-12 education omnibus budget bill was signed into law May 30 by Gov. Walz. The bill provides an additional $543 million in new funding for Minnesota school districts over the next two years. It provides a 2% increase each year in the basic funding formula, restores $49 million in pre-K investments, funds 4,000 young learners across the state, caps the special education cross subsidy to help school budgets, and makes permanent funding increases for Minnesota’s BIE schools.

“This final bipartisan education bill is a major improvement over where the Senate position was a month ago, and I want to thank Gov.Walz for his strong work to make a real investment in Minnesota’s schools and our children’s futures,” said Sen. Chuck Wiger (DFL-Maplewood), the ranking DFL member on the Senate E-12 Education Finance Committee. “While this is an improvement, there are things we must continue to work to advance: closing the achievement gap, passing the Teachers of Color Act, and getting a real handle on the special education crosssubsidy. Let’s build on the successes from this year as we go into 2020.”

Working in bi-partisan fashion, the House and Senate Education Conference Committee members agreed on two provisions supported by literacy advocates across the state.

Starting July 1, 2020, all public schools in Minnesota must screen any student in grades K-2, who are not reading at grade level, for signs of dyslexia. Schools must screen students in third grade or higher that are not reading at grade level for signs of dyslexia if another reason for reading failure has not been identified. Starting June 1, 2020, teacher preparation programs in Minnesota must explicitly teach to future

elementary school teachers the signs of dyslexia and provide them instruction in evidence-based reading instruction methods to teach reading.

Rachel Berger, a Hugo resident and president of Decoding Dyslexia Minnesota, said passage of these provisions, “will significantly impact reading proficiency rates for all Minnesota students and will begin to ensure equity and accessibility within our educational environments for both educators and their students.”

BUSINESS BRIEF Bistro La Roux to close its doors Bistro La Roux, located at 9372 N. Lexington Ave., announced it will close its doors after June 29. “This is the saddest post that we will ever write. We regret to inform you that Bistro La Roux will be closing after June 29th of this year. The five years that we have been open have been amazing and such a wonderful experience in so many ways. Father’s Day without a father

E

ver since December of 2015, I have come to absolutely dread Father’s Day. In fact, I tend to dread all the fi rst half of June.

No one should ever have to lose a parent at the age of 22.

Leading up to Father’s Day, I am bombarded with the flood of ads on TV and in my inbox and Hallmark cards in stores. On the day itself, I can’t work up the courage to venture onto social Out & media, as I know all of the sentimental About messages and pictures will kill me and Shannon remind me that he is Granholm not here.

On Father’s Day, I fi nd myself feeling jealous that most people my age still have both of their parents. I also fi nd myself feeling horribly depressed about the fact that on June 7, my parents, Earl and Karen, don’t get to celebrate another year of marriage.

Even though this year will mark my fourth Father’s Day without him, it is still unbearable. Actually, every day is pretty unbearable to be honest. I fi nd myself reminiscing about when he was here and when I could spoil him the way that he deserved. We would always go to his favorite place, Red Robin, so he could order onion rings, a burger and fries.

In his absence, I fi nd myself struggling with what to do on this day. One tradition I have tried out is buying a card for him, even though he will never get to read it. I also try to think about what I would have bought him if he was still here.

Now that I can’t buy him things, instead I try to fi nd something that reminds me of him or pays tribute to him. I then add it to my “daddy shelf,” which is quickly running out of room. Sitting on the shelf today, are his ashes, the flower he wore at my wedding, his favorite Minnesota Wild hat, one of his shirts turned into a pillow, his old fountain pens, a photo of us together when I was young and a lot of other artwork that says things such as, “Because someone we love is in Heaven, there is a little bit of Heaven in our home.”

I suppose one day, if I ever have children, the holiday could once again bring me joy. But I am sure, even after 20 years pass, I will still fi nd myself missing him, like I do every day, on Father’s Day. All I can do now is go shopping with my dogs Frosty and Twinkie, so they can buy their father a Pawther’s Day present.

So this Father’s Day, if you are lucky enough to still have your dad by your side, please honor him and thank him for all he has done for you while you still can.

If your home incurred storm damage, this can be a stressful time. Step four is a reminder to stay composed and resist highpressure sales tactics. Beware of “storm chasers” – out-of-town contractors soliciting business

from regions affected by natural disasters. Be proactive in seeking a contractor and not reactive to sales calls or door-todoor pitches.

Once you select a contractor, step five is to get an invoice and pay the contractor directly, preferably with a credit card, which offers additional fraud protection over other forms of payment. Don’t sign over any documents that give the contractor any rights to your insurance claims.

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Centennial School Board took the following action at its June 3 meeting: • Received a presentation on the high school link plan. A representative from Nexus Solutions shared preliminary plans and sketches from the architect. Currently, Centennial High School is one of the few schools in the state to have a two-building campus with an outdoor hallway. Construction of an enclosed link, which will include both classrooms and flexible learning spaces among other things, will be funded as part of the voter-approved levy in the fall.

• Heard from Superintendent Brian Dietz, who thanked the community, staff, students and board members for a great year.

“We are doing really good things for kids and that doesn't happen without all the efforts from our staff,” he said. “I am proud of

all of our communities for coming together and supporting the work we do. It takes a village.”

• Approved the consent agenda, which included a resolution authorizing the district's membership in the Minnesota State High School League.

• Heard from Centennial Alternative Compensation System (CACS) Facilitator Sarah Florin, who presented the Quality Compensation (Q Comp) annual report. Q Comp law was enacted through a bipartisan agreement in the Minnesota Legislature in July 2005. It is a voluntary program that allows local districts and exclusive representatives of the teachers to design and collectively bargain a plan that meets the four components of the law, which include career ladder/advancement options, job-embedded professional development, teacher evaluation and

totaling $1,826,429 for the district grounds building project. Director of Design Services Russ Schumacher, of Nexus Solutions, explained the bids came in about $163,000 under the $2 million budget. A total of 38 bids were received and the following bids were awarded: ° $353,800 to B & D Associates for cast in place concrete. ° $759,944 to Patzoldt Masonry for masonry. ° $235,890 to Schreiber Mullaney for general construction. ° $160,165 to Central Roofing for roofing. ° $22,330 to Service Fire Protection for fire protection. ° $74,300 to Boiler Services for piping and plumbing. ° $84,500 to Vogel Mechanical for HVAC ventilation. ° $135,500 to Laketown Electric for electrical.

• Awarded eight bids

• Awarded two bids totaling $967,938 for civil improvements for the ice arena addition and remodel project. Five bids were received for the project. The low bid for earthwork, site utilities and landscaping was submitted by Lloyds Construction Service for $584,600 and the low bid for paving, curb and gutter was submitted by Northwest Asphalt for $383,338. Schumacher explained the bids came in approximately $237,000 over budget. However, the entire project as a whole is around $118,000 under budget so far.

• Approved a resolution certifying the population estimate for the 2019 levy.

The district has experienced an increase in population from the 2017 census figure of 33,819 to the current census figure of 35,271 as determined by the state demographer. Director of Human Resources Dan Melde explained

the updated figure would be certified to the state demographer for approval of use in the 2019 payable 2020 revenue calculations.

• Approved the acquisition of a property located at 4906 103rd Lane NE, Circle Pines, for $210,000.

Dietz explained the homeowner contacted the district regarding the sale of the property, which fits with the district's long range plan for the high school campus. Dietz added there are two more properties to the west of the home that the district may acquire in the future.

The Centennial School Board's next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, at the District Office. There will also be a work study session immediately beforehand at 5:30 p.m.

The Centennial girls lacrosse season ended with a loss to Forest Lake, 11-8, in the Section 7 semifinals at home Monday, June 3.

Ella O’Hearn notched three goals for the Cougars. Jillian Neudahl had two goals and Sydney Chance Farley and Gabbi Buttweiler one each. Taylor Glumack delivered four goals for Forest Lake (14-1).

The Cougars (15-1) will take a 15-game winning streak into state after repelling Blaine 14-7 in the Section 7 championship game Wednesday evening in Irondale.

“They are a product of each other, hard work, determination and those that laid the foundation before them,” Beach said. “They make my job easy, and I can't put into words how proud I am of them.”

A year ago, Centennial had a 3-5 record before fi nding their groove to win six straight and advance to state, where they went 0-2, fi nishing 9-7. This spring, more mature and skilled, the Cougars were a force right away, but for an opening loss to Irondale. They have not lost since.

The Cougars swept through the sectional against conference rivals Champlin Park 13-3, Andover 13-7 and Blaine, which fi nished 12-4 with two losses to the Cougars.

The junior attacker notched six goals and five assists in three section wins by the Cougars, who are 15-1 with 15 consecutive wins. “He distributes the ball to the right place, at the right time, and ignites the offense with heads-up play,” coach Jonathan Beach said.

LION’S HEART: Organization inspires teen volunteering and leadership FROM PAGE 1

“Lion's Heart is about being a well-rounded individual. It teaches them to be leaders in their community,” Chantel explained. “I think in the world that they largely have grown up in, it is a very natural tendency to revert to social media. The connectivity, interactions and social interactions are very different. This draws them away from that world for a little bit of time and shows them something greater than themselves. It gives them a purpose.”

Since the 2016 founding of the fi rst chapter in Minnesota, additional boys’ groups, including the class of 2021 and 2022, and a girls group of 2022 have also been established. In all, the Lino Lakes chapters have contributed 2,290 volunteer hours in their brief existence.

Six other Minnesota chapters, in addition to Lino Lakes, are now on the map as well including: Eden Prairie, Lake Elmo, Maple Grove, Rochester, St Paul and Woodbury. More chapters will likely form as the word spreads about how teens can serve their communities.

“These kids all have very demanding lives with school and activities. Many are involved in competitive sports,” said Rawley's dad, J. Scherman. “Seeing that competitive spirit directed to community betterment are the types of lessons we all hope would come from athletics, and Lion’s Heart

is a great avenue to direct their drive and desire to give back.”

Chantel added, “After four years it has been surprising that they have been able to stick together. Despite their busy schedules, sports, academics and family life, they are still able to fi nd time for this and make it a priority.”

Lino's Lions meets six times a year and typically volunteers once a month.

The chapter is now working on its next volunteer opportunity, which members hope will be a project with Habitat for Humanity.

Last week was relatively quiet with the lone exception on Tuesday, June 4 when a heavy thunderstorm moved through the whole area. I totaled less than 1 inch of rain and some small hail. The smoke that had been with us for about a week cleared and we enjoyed a nice stretch of somewhat dry weather. The Airport’s temperature of 90º on Friday was the first of the year, and with dew points in the low 60’s it was somewhat manageable to be outside. I only recorded 88º. A slow- moving cold front over the weekend didn’t arrive till the afternoon on Sunday, bringing us a light shower but it was fairly brief and the evening was pleasant.

At that meeting the Board also approved the conversion of a staff development day on April 22 to a student contact day. Unfortunately, inclement weather forced the closure of schools again on April 11. It is the recommendation of Scott Johnson, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, that the School Board approve revised 2018-19 Student and Staff Calendars to reflect this closure. Because the school district remains above the minimum required number of instructional days and hours at each grade level, it is further recommended that no additional days be added to the existing school district calendar. Motion to approve the 2018-19 Calendar change by Bettinger, seconded by Timm. Vote: 5-0-0, motion carried unanimously. 10.6 Approval of Northeast Metropolitan Intermediate School District No. 916’s Long-term Facilities Maintenance Budget - The school board of Northeast Metropolitan Intermediate School District No. 916 has approved a long-term facility maintenance budget for its facilities for the 2020-2021 school year in the amount of $144,700. Added to board packets are the various components of this program budget. Once approved, Centennial would include a proportionate share of the costs of the 916 in our long-term facility maintenance application. This is consistent with what has been approved in previous years. POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Officers received a report of a fawn that was found in the 7000 block of Sunrise Drive May 28. The complainant was advised to drop off the fawn at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. • An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Ash Street and Otter Lake Road May 28. The officer conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on the vehicle and the driver was subsequently cited for numerous violations including: expiration of driver's license, not carrying proof of insurance, fire extinguisher not securely mounted in vehicle, no warning devices and no seatbelt. • An officer responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 7500 block of 4th Avenue May 28. The officer located the male and trespassed him from the property at the owner's request. • Officers responded to a report of a known female shoplifter at a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive May 29. Officers completed a walk through of the business, and the female abandoned her merchandise and left without purchasing anything. • While investigating a different criminal offense May 29, officers learned a 62-year-old female may have aided an offender by destroying evidence. A case file

was submitted to the Anoka County Attorney's Office for charging. • An officer responded to a report of an impaired driver in the 8000 block of Lake Drive May 29. An adult female was arrested for fourth-degree driving while impaired and released to a sober party with charges pending. • Officers responded to a call of an individual who had driven to a local business in the 6800 block of Lake Drive and was intoxicated May 29.

Officers investigated and an adult female was subsequently arrested for DWI. • An officer from a neighboring police department arrested a 29-year-old male in the 1400 block of Birch Street May 29 for fifth-degree controlled substance, intent to escape tax, possession of hypodermic needles and for an outstanding Ramsey County warrant. • Officers assisted another agency with an accident with injuries in the 3900 block of 125th Avenue NE in Blaine May 30. The lone occupant involved was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. • While working Toward Zero Deaths traffic detail in the 6500 block of Ware Road May 30, Blaine Police stopped a vehicle and arrested the driver for fifth-degree possession and driving after revocation. • An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 700 block of Main Street May 30.

The adult male driver was cited for speeding, underage drinking and driving, possession of an open bottle and underage possession of alcohol. • A citizen reported finding a fawn in the area of Oak Lane and Carole Drive May 31. The officer advised it was best to leave it alone so its mother could come back to retrieve it. • Officers responded to investigate a fight that occurred in the 300 block of Elm Street May 31. Two juvenile males were involved and charges for disorderly conduct are pending. • Officers responded to a report of juveniles throwing rocks at cars in the 2200 block of Tart Lake Road May 31. Officers determined it was actually food and were unable to locate the suspected juveniles. • Officers located a suspicious vehicle in a park in the 6900 block of Sunrise Drive after hours June 1. The occupants were found to be juveniles and in possession of a controlled substance. Charges are pending. • An officer received information about possible unsafe playground equipment in the 6900 block of Sunrise Drive June 2. The area was checked and the public works department was called to fix some problems. • Officers responded to a personal injury accident involving a motorcycle in the 6600

block of Hodgson Road June 3. One male was transported to the hospital by ambulance and later booked into jail.

The second male was released with charges pending after DWI processing is complete. • An officer received a call of a possible damage to property report in the 400 block of Arrowhead Drive June 3. The officer determined someone had written on playground equipment with marker. The investigation is ongoing.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Police were dispatched to the 7200 block of Brian Drive in Centerville June 2 to check the welfare of an intoxicated female who had left the area on foot. Police checked the area but were unable to locate the female. • Officers investigated a suspicious vehicle near Golden Lake Park in Circle Pines June 2. Two juvenile females were transported home and released to their parents. • Police were dispatched to the 9000 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington June 2 on report of an assault. Officers gathered information from the victim and witnesses.

The case remains under investigation. • Officers observed a traffic violation in the area of Lake Drive and Restwood Road in Lexington June 3. A traffic stop was conducted, and the

driver was subsequently arrested for third-degree DWI. • Police were dispatched to the city of Circle Pines June 3 on report of criminal sexual conduct. The case was referred to the Criminal Investigations Division. • Officers were flagged down by a passerby in the 8700 block of Griggs Avenue in Lexington June 3 regarding a civil dispute. • Police were dispatched to a theft in the 9200 block of Lexington Avenue in Circle Pines June 3. Information was collected. • Officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Lexington Avenue and Lake Drive in Circle Pines May 29. After a probable cause search of the vehicle, a passenger was cited and released and the driver was subsequently arrested for obstructing the legal process. • Officers responded to a report of disorderly conduct in the 1700 block of Westview Street in Centerville May 29.

A juvenile male was threatening and causing a disturbance on the playground.

The male was detained and later checked out by paramedics before being released to a parent. • Police conducted a traffic stop in the area of Main Street and 21st Avenue in Centerville May 30. The driver was subsequently arrested for multiple violations, including marijuana in a motor vehicle.

H: Just like some other best friend duosA: Like Sydney Shepardson and Caitlin Kuehborn, H: Jack Harris and Jacob Brewer, A: And like Mr. Bruening and Ms. Baaland! We think ...

H: As Canadian songwriter David Tyson once said, H, A: “True friendship comes when the silence between two people is comfortable.”

A: We sincerely believe that without strong friendships, life isn’t as special.

H: My high school experience would have been completely different without her at my side these last four years.

A: We’ve been through the highs, like being section fi nalists as speech co-captains and duo partners.

H: But we’ve also been through the lows, like losing our dear speech coach and mentor, Mr. Quinlan.

A: There is no way we’d be up on this stage speaking to all of you if it wasn’t for his dedication and coaching.

H, A: Thank you, Q. H: If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that even in the lowest lows, you’ll always have true friends to go through it with you.

A: But as we leave behind our high school careers, we also are forced to leave behind friends who have accompanied us throughout the years.

H: We are attending different colleges in the fall—which is why I will be instituting a mandatory FaceTime at least once a week A: Fine.

H: The future can be full of a lot of unknowns—and it can be terrifying.

A: As we transition into college, the military, the work force, or gap years, we’ll all be faced with new situations and new relationships.

H: This is your time to look forward to the future and expand your horizons, and you don't have to do it alone.

A: The friends you have made in high school have guided you on your path towards new opportunities as well as new friendships.

H: Don’t take these opportunities for granted, but also don’t forget to hold onto the

people that made your opportunities possible.

A: All of us have worked our butts off for the past four years, both separately and together, we have made it to the fi nish line.

H: From forced group projects, to letting the kids in the next hour know what’s on the test, we have pushed through these last few years as anything but alone.

A: To quote Winnie the Pooh— H: Wait what?

A: Aren’t we ending with the Winnie the Pooh quote?

H: I thought we were gonna sing the BFF song from the Spongebob Squarepants Musical!

A: No, we didn’t agree on that. I love you but no.

H: Okay, fi ne ... How about this?

H: To quote Winnie the Pooh ...

A: “If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together …

H: There is something you must always remember.

A: You are braver than you believe …

H: stronger than you seem …

A: and smarter than you think …

H: But the most important thing is, even if we're apart ...

H, A: I'll always be with you.”

Katelyn Espe My dad and I have had an inside joke since sixth grade where when I come home from school every day the fi rst thing he says is “did you learn anything today?” and I’d reply with an obnoxious “no.” And let’s face it, some days school did seem pretty pointless; for instance, when are we ever going to need to know what a gerund phrase is or the process of glycolysis, let alone the ancient rulers of the Ottoman Empire. But to reassure all the parents here, mostly you Dad, that your efforts to keep us motivated (especially during the senior slide) weren’t for nothing, I thought I’d share a list of the five most important things I’ve learned in high school—besides the quadratic formula.

1. Don’t drink the water in the red building.

2. Sometimes when it’s raining you just have to put on your rain jacket and smile. We’ve had the privilege of attending a high school with two buildings, and although I’ve heard they are connecting them in the future, I’m thankful we got the opportunity to have to suck it up. This one also applies to when

teachers say “...well in college you’ll have to...” since all the campuses I’ve visited have consisted of a dining hall that isn’t connected to the dorms. My favorite part about my friends is they always

know how to laugh in any situation and that positivity is truly contagious, even if it mimics apathy. Such as after the AP Calc exam, when Ellie Jensen said, “I can’t wait for my college to see my score and kick me back to pre-calc.”

3. 3. Find something to appreciate about everything. When I told Mr. Broberg that I hated physics in 9th grade, his cure was to try and get me to relate physics to the thing I loved most at the time, which was theatre. Despite physics and theatre being a bit of a stretch, I was able to connect it to the logic puzzles I love doing on my phone. This made each problem challenging in good way, and I soon found myself excited to do physics. By simply changing my viewpoint on the subject, I was able to see it in such an intriguing, creative way, and that has inspired me to study physics at college next year. As long as you can fi nd something to admire when faced with a less than ideal situation, the world will be yours to make of it.

4. It's okay to be a duck. Hear me out on this one. My worst class in high school was AP Bio; I had been pretty sick with mono for a majority of the semester and so my attendance record (and grade percentage) weren’t too great. I went in for midterm conferences expecting to be criticized for not keeping up with my workload but instead all Mr. Mardquart said was, “I think Katelyn is like a duck,” which confused me and my parents a considerable amount.

What he had meant by that, he clarified, was that from above the water I seemed to be smoothly gliding, but below it, I was paddling frantically just to stay afloat. Looking back it reminds me of an Arnie

Lamer’s quote: “True learning begins at frustration.” I’m pretty sure all of us who had Mr. Lamers have been frustrated at some point or another, but as the wise man says, “Let the learning begin.”

Which I think is the point of being a duck: as long as you keep paddling when faced with challenges, you’re getting somewhere, and that’s all that matters.

5. It means more to understand the facts than to memorize them.

I believe high school was about learning how to learn rather than learning what we learned. Nothing that was introduced to us became clear until we could fit it into the big picture; discovering how to fit the information in, how to logically solve things, connect the dots, conceptualize in a way that we have never been able to before that’s what we will take out of high school over anything else. I think this relates to the square root of -1 or the imaginary number i.

Although the number itself does not exist independently, once you start plugging it into equations everything about those math problems starts making sense. Even though at times it was hard to see high school big picture, the small things we’ve learned along the way are what give meaning to our time here at Centennial. So don’t forget to reflect on the things you’ve learned in high school, keep paddling, and remember to keep your eyes open for everything that you have left to learn wherever life takes you next.

Reese Peck Cowles The graduating class of 2019 has dealt with light-hearted and serious issues. From school shootings to being a part of the age group to elect people of all religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientations to our great democracy.

Through the terrible and terrific, I have seen this group students come and stand together for those, they may not know. We stand for those who may not have a voice and help those who do, speak their mind. We have smiled, suffered, cheered and cried together. Whether it’s celebrating one of our sports teams going to state, or dealing with the realness of the tragic consequences shown through the Arrive Alive crash and funeral, we have experienced it together.

That is what life is all about. Going through life, experiencing things is great, but what impact does it have if the experiences aren’t with friends?

place, if we don’t interact and contribute to it? We as humans are social creatures, we crave interaction with people because that brings us satisfaction and happiness. We help build our community through the connections we make with others.

The great philosopher, Plato emphasized that we, as humans, are not self-sufficient, we need others, and we benefit from our social interactions, from other person’s talents, aptitudes, and friendship. Life has many twists and turns, but we are together, with our friends and family, our enemies and allies. No matter where you go, what you do, or what happens in your life, always know that the people in this auditorium right here, right now, will be there for you. There is an old fable that talks about a father and his sons.

A father has a family of sons that constantly argue, and despite his efforts to stop the fighting, it continued.

One day the father came up with a simple task for the boys, to bring him a bundle of sticks. Then, he ordered them individually to break each bundle into pieces. When all the sons attempted and failed to do so, the father separated the bundle and gave a stick to each of his sons, which they broke with ease. Then the father addressed them and said, “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this bundle of sticks, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks.” Just as the fable about the father and his sons means to say, in unity there is strength. Together we are able to do any task, overcome any obstacle, and conquer any foe we face. I hope that every single student here understands that when we leave, we are not alone. We are never alone. This amazing opportunity we have been given called life is a blessing, and we can do anything we can imagine, together.
