‘More Than Pink’ program teaches importance of grit, growth mindset

Fourth of July will be celebrated this Sunday. The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. If “More Than Pink” participants weren’t inspired before, they sure are now.

Now in its fi fth year, Centennial Community Education’s More Than Pink program has reached more than 100 participants for the fi rst time in the program’s history. The program was initially for girls in grades 4-5, but expanded to include grades 6-7 last year.

The six-week program is designed to inspire girls to stay true to themselves and live free from societal stereotypes. Girls of all athletic abilities not only train for a 5K at the end of the program but celebrate their bodies, honor their voices and embrace their gifts.

“The purpose of the program is for girls to fi nd their inner strength and be empowered through trying new things,” said Dani Anderson, More than Pink program lead. “Our goal is that we ultimately create a community of girls that feel as though they are more than just pink.”

Pam Kosanke recently visited the group to share her failures and successes and offer advice on how to be successful athletes and entrepreneurs. As an athlete, Kosanke has captained, coached and competed in two World Series, two World Cups and two World Championships across three sports.

As a marketing professional for 20 years, Kosanke has launched companies and products, increased market share, reversed sale declines, driven growth and led brand reinventions. As an entrepreneur, in 2021 she launched Sports Bigs, the world’s fi rst plush toy product that is focused on promoting women athletes and athletics.

Kosanke told More Than Pink participants the two things that have gotten her to where she is today are grit and growth mindset.

“When you think about entrepreneurs, all they are trying to do is to grow. When you think about athletes, they are trying to grow and be big and strong … I have to tell you how many times I’ve failed, that’s just part of the game,” she said. “It is not if, it SEE ‘MORE THAN PINK’, PAGE 7

Cougars have 2 softball all-staters, 6 all-conference, state coach of year

Centennial senior outfielder Abby Lohse and junior pitcher Helene Krage were named to the Coaches Association AllState softball team, and were among six Cougars named all-conference, after a banner 2021 season.

Centennial was the only team with two picks among 20 players on the Class 4AAAA list and their coach Rick Thomas was named Coach of the Year in the division. The Cougars went 23-2 overall, 13-0 in the conference, won Section 5AAAA and placed third in the state tournament. They hit 0.327 as a team with 16 homers.

Krage logged a 12-1 pitching record and 1.26 ERA with 126 strikeouts in

98.7 innings, while hitting 0.534 with six home runs and 27 RBIs. Lohse batted 0.384 with six homers, three doubles, two triples, 22 RBIs,

23 runs and eight stolen bases.

Both were fi rst-team all-state picks. There were 10 fi rst-team picks and 10

second-team in each of the four classes. Krage also a second-team All-Metro choice on the Star Tribune’s team.

Also named to allNorthwest Suburban were senior fi rst baseman Maddy Ringen (0.364, one homer, 12 RBIs, 17 runs), junior catcher Bryn Ruberg (0.367, 16 runs), senior pitcher Maisy Dockendorf (8-0 record and 2.55 ERA in 49.3 innings, 42 strikeouts) and senior third baseman Ella Fidler (0.384, 21 RBIs, 19 runs, nine doubles, two homers).

Earning all-section honors were Krage, Ringen, Lohse, Fidler and sophomore second baseman Adrianna Thomas (0.244).

Getting all-conference honorable mention were junior outfielder Syd Chiappetta (0.229, 10 runs, eight steals), junior shortstop Alexa Just (0.274, six steals), senior outfielder Emma Hopkins (0.295, 11 runs) and Thomas.

Girls lacrosse: Awards, leaders announced for 12-3 Cougar team The Centennial girls lacrosse team had five members named to all-Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC) after the Cougars, coached

by Gary Nelson, posted a 12-3 overall record and 10-2 in conference.

Named all-NWSC were Ella O’Hearn, sophomore attacker (59 goals, 29 assists, 94 ground balls); Callie Cody, sophomore midfielder (45 goals, 13 assists, 43 ground balls); Neila Haney, junior midfielder (43 goals, 39 assists, 79 ground balls, 67 draw controls); Sabrina Francis, senior midfielder (21 goals, 17 assists, 52 ground balls, 42 draw controls); and Olivia Wlaschin, junior defender (43 ground balls). Honorable mentions went to Sabra Brouillet, senior midfielder, and Sydney Chance-Farley, junior midfielder.

Team awards, voted by teammates, went to Haney (most valuable), Cody (offense), Brouillet (defense); and sophomore midfielder Anna Jarpey (most improved). Named all-section fi rst team were Haney and Wlaschin; named second team were O’Hearn and Cody.

The Cougars, coached by Jonathan Beach, were 11-0 in conference and finished 11-3 overall.

Named all-conference were Leo Troje, senior long stick midfielder (LSM) (led with 73 ground balls); Andreas Bramscher, senior goalkeeper (0.593 save percentage, 6.24 goals-against-average); Noah Berger, junior attacker (points leader with 27 goals, 14 assists); Sam Rodriguez, junior midfielder (21 goals); and Matt Everson, junior defender and LSM (43 ground balls, 22 forced turnovers).

Getting honorable mentions were Mason Wistrcill, senior defender (38 ground balls, 22 forced turnovers); Ike Ankrum, senior midfielder (led with 22 assists); AJ Carls, junior midfielder (41 ground goals, 17-for-35 on face-offs); Max Taylor, senior defender (37 ground balls); Matt Clough, senior attacker (20 goals); and Eli Ward, senior midfielder (33 ground balls, nine goals).

Northeast metro muskie anglers encountering changes, challenges

Anglers in the northeast metro area have been stalking the mighty muskellunge for decades.

The muskie following today is stronger than ever, but one word is on the lips of anglers and fishery managers alike: change.

Ryan McMahon has been fishing muskies for 25 years and has guided clients for the past 10. He knows the northeast metro lakes well and has had a front row seat to changing dynamics in Owasso, Forest, White Bear and Bald Eagle lakes. “They’ve all gone through so many changes,” he says, citing the introduction of Zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species. He added, “weed growth has changed tremendously.”

In general, McMahon reports a “steady decline in the last couple years” in the overall quality of muskie fishing, which means fewer fish seen and fewer catches. In his estimation, “2012 was the last good year.” In late 2013, Lake Owasso experienced a fish kill, and he says he’s waiting until that lake is about a decade out before he goes back.

East Metro Area Fisheries Supervisor T.J. DeBates generally cites all the same changes McMahon has observed. One complication in responding to those changes is a relatively recent statewide stocking guide, which dictates the stocking of fi ngerling-size muskies in many lakes, including Forest and Owasso. That is in contrast to White Bear and Bald Eagle, where DeBates is allowed to stock yearlings and adults — which fare better against competition and predation by other predator fish.

However, the same plan that controls the stocking regimen also mandates getting a better handle on muskie demographics through a two-year lake sampling process. It promises to help managers fine-tune individual resources. “It’s a high priority in our area,” explains DeBates. “Our goal as biologists and managers is to collect the best data we can. In the next five to 10 years, we’ll have a real good picture (of each lake’s population).”

Initial results are beginning to paint that picture through population estimates. Before COVID-19 interrupted survey efforts, East Metro Fisheries managed to survey Bald Eagle Lake and DeBates was “very impressed with the numbers and size of the fi sh.”

But numbers don’t always translate into catches.

McMahon notes recent difficulty finding and enticing the fish on Bald Eagle. He knows muskie behavior changes often, and laughs it off: “it’s not my favorite lake right now.” He fishes it often, along with nearby White Bear, which he characterizes as deep and “crazy clear.”

White Bear Lake has been known for its clear water, but Zebra mussels have augmented that clarity since they were introduced. DeBates notes that changing water clarity may cause behavioral changes in muskies. For one thing, as lake water becomes clearer, weeds tend to grow at depths previously unseen. Changes in weeds influence the location of bait fish and predators alike, and DeBates says that if anglers don’t adapt their approach, they may simply conclude there are fewer fish. He suggests the same may happen on Forest Lake, where Zebra mussels have also appeared.

“Time will tell.”

McMahon fishes Forest Lake often, and recognizes it as having its own unique characteristics. “It’s really cool. It has a good topwater bite and a good shallow water bite.”

Locally, he splits his time between Forest, Bald Eagle and White Bear lakes, sometimes hitting two in one day. He stresses the importance of keeping abreast of what the fish are doing at any one time: “You have to stay on your toes.”

Another thing keeping the muskie crowd on its toes is the sheer popularity of the sport. Both McMahon and DeBates mention how muskie anglers have increased in number over the years.

Lakes managed for muskies, however, number fewer than 100 statewide. As a result, relatively few adult fish encounter lures on a regular basis. These

“educated” fish show signs of reluctance, which makes catching them more difficult over lifetimes that can last 20 years or more.

All changes and complicating factors aside, McMahon continues to ply local muskie waters regularly. Despite increasing difficulties catching fish, he derives satisfaction from providing clients what he calls “a fun, exciting experience.”

“I enjoy the cat-and-mouse game aspect of it. It’s always a rewarding and interesting process.”

When asked if muskies are truly “the fish of 10,000 casts,” he says, “No. I’m not sure where that idea comes from. Especially nowadays, with the technology we have and what we know about the fish, they should not be. There are no guarantees, but you should be able to have a good shot at catching one in less than 10,000 casts.”

Let me introduce myself

M

y name is Caden Christiansen and I am a summer intern at Press Publications. I graduated from Henry Sibley High School, now Two Rivers High School, in 2019 and just finished my sophomore year at Bethel University where I am currently majoring in finance with a journalism minor. At Bethel I am a middle infielder on the baseball team and the sports editor for the school newspaper The Clarion.

I was born in White Bear township and my family and I lived there until I was 5 years old before moving to south Maplewood. As a little kid I was frequently standing in line at Cup N’ Cone and loved going to Caden’s Marketfest with my parents. Now as an almost 20 Corner year old, I have since moved away from my parents Caden brand new house built in Christiansen Newport, Minnesota and living with six of my Bethel teammates in Arden Hills. This summer I have spent my time loving my internship at Press Publications, working for an asphalt company in Edina, umping youth baseball games, playing amatuer baseball in the Park National League, and learning to grocery shop for under $100.

My internship at Press Publications is unfortunately only eight weeks long and I am working around 15 hours a week. In the three short weeks I have been here, I can’t express enough how much I enjoy it. I am only in the office Mondays and Tuesdays, and although my other jobs put food on the table and gas in my car, I wish I was able to be in the office reporting and writing all week. Everyone in the office has been extremely welcoming and friendly ever since I have started and I really appreciate being given this opportunity to learn, grow and improve my writing ability. One of the things I love about journalism is getting to learn about new and interesting people and hear their stories and that is something I am really excited to continue doing the rest of the summer.

I have always loved to write and to this day would take writing a 15-page paper over a test any day. But as I enter my junior year of college with no idea what I want my future career path to look like, I am reminded of my Friendly Hills Middle School ‘Book of Me’ assignment. At my high school graduation party in the summer of 2019, my mom showed me a page from the scrapbook I made in my sixth grade English class titled “Who Will I Be?” Sixth grade Caden wrote about playing college baseball and becoming a sports writer for ESPN, traveling the country watching games and reporting on them. Seeing that in writing has helped me remain open minded about the future and stay open to new opportunities. It reminds me to truly take advantage of my internship this summer and is something that will motivate me to dive into any future opportunities that present themselves. As I write for The Clarion and now for the Press Publications, every small business story, author Q&A, or town hall meeting is a way of keeping that sixth-grade dream alive, and I can’t wait to see where it all takes me.

aving grown up in an era that started out with a black and white television in the house, I find it a blessing to be somewhat versed in the use of today’s electronic devices. The tasks these devices can perform, and so quickly, make things so much easier at times.

It meant a great deal to look someone in the eye, shake their hand and say a genuine “thank you” or “it was nice to see you” in the course of a conversation.

We didn’t text message or “Snap,” we talked face-to-face.

Today we have several generations of people all living in this fast-paced society, yet not all of us are necessarily geared to thrive in it. This is why I think the folks of my particular generation have some mighty big shoes to fill. As a veteran police officer, and someone who needs to understand communication, I feel it is paramount that my generation can communicate effectively with the youth of today, the leaders of tomorrow, along with the most amazing generation of all, our senior members of the community. Mayor of Centerville elected League of Minnesota Cities President Mayor of Centerville D. Love has been elected to serve as president of the League of Minnesota Cities for 2021-22. The Board of Directors is responsible for leading the statewide organization in a way that is strategic, responsible, and representative of all cities’ interests.

“I want the League to continue to be a unifier and I want to help in that endeavor,” said Love. “As we make policies and decisions, I want it to be through a lens of what’s good for cities — not big, medium, or little cities, not rich or poor cities — but all cities.”

Love served as chair of the Centerville Planning and Zoning Commission before he was appointed to city council in 2009. He was appointed mayor in 2020. He is a claims manager with State Farm Insurance and previously served as chair of the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust’s Board of Trustees.

The League of Minnesota Cities is a membership organization dedicated to helping cities throughout Minnesota build quality communities through effective advocacy, expert analysis, trusted guidance, and collective action. The League serves its more than 830 member cities through advocacy, education and training, policy development, risk management, and other services.

D. Love, mayor of Centerville, has been selected as the League of Minnesota Cities President for 2021-22.

This is Max. He’s a little guy, just 9 pounds, but he has a big heart. The 6-yearold Chihuahua mix likes to be held, but is also perfectly content cuddling and sitting in someone’s lap.

Max can get a little nervous, and it takes him a few minutes to warm up to strangers.

Ultimately, though, he loves everyone. Max does well with other dogs and with cats, too. He’s not real keen about walking on a leash, so he’d prefer to have a fenced backyard where he can do his exploring.

Max would do best in a quieter home with people who let him follow them around and be by their side. He does fine with children but gets a little anxious when they run around, so a home with older, respectful children would be best. Poisonous ideas of critical race theory I am saddened that the poisonous ideas of critical race theory are sweeping across our society and our schools. How can we further the brotherhood of man by fostering resentment for cultures and races?

Have you heard about the Chinese Cultural Revolution?

My parents and I experienced it directly during the 10 years (1966-1976) over which it took place in China. You can easily Google it if you are not familiar with it. During those 10 years, as it’s described, “Class struggle is the key link and everything else hinges on it.” People hated and denounced each other, and most of Chinese tradition, religion and culture was abolished. Schools became jokes as grade inflation was practiced to the point that scores of zero were honored.

Does this sound familiar regarding American schools today? Today, it is race that’s being weaponized to effect an American cultural revolution, creating a counterculture that disdains our institutions and values. It is set upon dismantling the greatest country in the world.

I hope Centennial Schools’ officials will not be swept along with this political tide. Our

public schools should not be dividing students along racial lines and producing graduates who hate our country. Students should be taught critical thinking and not political dogma that holds that the U.S. is systemically racist.

As a taxpayer, I will not support a public school system that is corrupting and politicized.

Wake up, supporters of Centennial In 2021, everyone believes that racism is wrong. Most everyone also believes that reverse racism is wrong. Yet, here we are, witnessing the reintroduction of racial discrimination into our society through critical race theory (CRT) in our schools.

Two letter-writers, Paul Gardner (published June 8) and Sandra Trudeau (June 15), appear to approve of reverse race discrimination because their purpose was to discredit anyone who speaks out against CRT. They even referenced the antebellum South and 1950’s segregation to attribute the worst of motives (racism) to me and their neighbors in the Centennial School District.

Discrediting opponents is a

familiar tactic of the left.

CRT is not a benign academic movement as Sandra Trudeau suggests. Instead, it is a tool for social upheaval that has been exported by academia into our public schools and institutions.

Its focus on race as the defining characteristic of a person is a repudiation of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and all he stood for.

Disavowing King, the leftist icon Ibrahim X. Kendi, writes, “The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.” Kendi’s books and others by radical authors were on Centennial’s website as “Recommended Reading” until recently, when the list disappeared.

In his letter, Gardner mocks CRT opponents for fearing “for the survival of their ‘culture.’” It seems lost on Mr. Gardner that culture is everything. If you’re trying to fix the achievement gap (which is the goal), it’s culture that fixes it. In families that value education (another “culture” thing), whatever their color, the achievement gap effectively disappears.

Believers in CRT see society ordered around a person’s group identity, not their individual identity. By adopting the group identity of victimhood, minorities have received entitlements but

have also been disempowered by teaching dependency. This is according to Shelby Steele, author of “Shame: How America’s Past Sins Have Polarized our Country.” Will students at Centennial ever read his books?

The bottom line is this.

Dividing students along racial lines distorts the mission of our public schools. Our schools in in Minnesota have become political indoctrination factories borne along by an equity philosophy and CRT. Wake up, supporters of Centennial!

‘Equity industry’ Defenders of “equity,” the agenda that’s being proposed at Centennial Schools, are having a difficult time defining the word. One letter writer said equity is “giving every student the best possible opportunity in education.” Another letter writer said, “equity refers to fairness and justice,” which seeks to “address those imbalances.”

Not a single advocate of an equity plan for Centennial can articulate the specific problem or problems that need solving, spell out the actual goals of an equity plan or describe the measures to tell us whether the

plan’s been successful or not.

Is the proposed equity audit/ plan intended to narrow the achievement gap at Centennial?

That’s been tried. In fact, Minnesota has poured billions into “compensatory” funding for schools over the past 25 years trying to narrow education disparities. There’s little to show for it.

If the equity audit/plan is about changing attitudes and thinking of students, staff and parents, how does that translate into academic improvement? An audit to develop a plan of this nature begins with soft or leading questions. It leads to vague definitions of the problem and offers boilerplate solutions (more money perhaps?).

This overhaul of our education system via equity agendas is now being referred to as the “equity industry.” It’s no surprise. Lots of money will flow there.

Our school board should instead deal with real student problems — for example, students who’ve fallen behind due to COVID and require remedial education because they’ve been out of school for nearly a year or had discouraging conditions which prevented online learning.

Let’s try something that works to fix an actual problem.

Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health and safety organization, has declared June 28-July 4 Fireworks Safety Awareness Week to help educate the public on the dangers of fi reworks. Whether at home or by attending professional displays, fi reworks seriously injure thousands of people every year, with some injuries even resulting in death.

Burns were reported to be the most common injury to hands, fingers, arms and legs. However, contusions and lacerations were the most frequent injuries to eyes, which included foreign bodies in the eye.

Recently, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a report comparing product injury estimate data from March 2020 through September 2020, to the estimate data from March 2019 through September 2019. The report showed that emergency department visits for injuries involving fi reworks increased significantly — by 56%, the highest percentage injury increase across all age groups of any product tracked during this time period. In addition, more than 79% of fi reworks-related injuries occurred at home in the 2020 period whereas an estimated 68% of fi reworksrelated injuries occurred at home in 2019.

Additionally, a recent online survey of U.S. adults from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) found that 39% of parents said that children age 5 to 7 should be allowed to handle sparklers. Yet sparklers can burn up to 1,800 degrees. And, 27% of parents responded that children age 11 to 15 should be allowed to handle fi reworks, even though data shows that children younger than 15 years of age account for 36 percent of estimated fi reworks-related injuries.

The AAO survey also found that: • 33% overall know someone injured by fi reworks or have been injured by fireworks.

• 8% report being injured by fi reworks.

• 27% knew someone else injured by fi reworks.

is when. You will never go through your life in a straight growth curve. It will not be a perfect ride for you, and that is OK; half of the battle is knowing that it is not going to happen, and you prepare yourself to get through it.”

Kosanke explained that when she was growing up, she was a “tomboy.” She recalled an experience where she was riding on a bus and her peers shouted such awful things at her she couldn’t repeat the words used. “It really hurt,” she said. “My brother told me, ‘Pam, if you are going to be a tomboy, be the best dang tomboy that you can be.’ He gave me permission to be who I was, and from that point on, I just said this is who I am.”

She talked about other challenges she faced along the way, both as an athlete and as an entrepreneur. In her athletic career, she shared some of her disappointments, many of them caused by injuries. She then shared the story about her toy company. She talked about all the hurdles she had to jump through in the three years it took for the company to launch.

“Who knew that starting a toy company in the middle of a pandemic with a global supply chain crisis and a looming recession would present some obstacles?” she laughed.

Kosanke was not the fi rst guest to visit the program, as the girls already met with members of the Minnesota Vixen, a professional women’s football team.

As the program continues, several more guests will visit, including local business owners and the Lino Lakes Ambassadors.

In addition to workouts, the girls will try new things like hip hop yoga and rugby.

“One of the things we really focus on is developing strong leaders, girls that aren’t afraid to be different and be themselves and feel (empowered) enough to try new things,” Anderson said.

The program builds throughout the summer and will culminate with a celebratory More Than Pink 5K on Monday, Aug. 9 (rain date Aug. 10), in which the girls will participate. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to join in the fun.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 300 block of Birch Street June 15. The incident was documented, and a state accident report was completed because of the damage amount. A juvenile male was cited for using his cell phone while driving, and one vehicle was towed from the scene.

• An officer responded to a theft from motor vehicle report in the 800 block of Pine Street June 16. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer responded to a residence in the 6600 block of East Shadow Lake Drive for a neighbor dispute June 15. The officer spoke to both parties involved and advised them of further steps to take to avoid any further conflict.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 7400 block of I-35E June 18. The driver was subsequently arrested for violating an order for protection, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving after revocation and speeding.

• A resident in the 200 block of Carl Street was told to put out an illegal burn June 15. The fire was extinguished.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for not displaying any license plates in the 800 block of Orange Street June 16.

The adult male driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant and was also cited for driving after revocation, no proof of insurance and for not displaying license plates.

• Officers responded to a report of a male smashing his car in a parking lot in the 700 block of Apollo Drive June 16. The male was located, and officers learned he was experiencing mechanical problems with his vehicle and was trying to fix it.

• Officers responded to a hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Robinson Drive and Cardinal Way June 17. An adult male was subsequently arrested and booked into jail for seconddegree DWI refusal, thirddegree DWI and open bottle violation.

• Officers responded to a business in the 2300 block of Main Street June 18 on a report of an unwanted person who was out of control in the lobby. The person was identified and asked not to return to the premises.

• Officers responded to a call of a personal injury accident involving a motorcycle in the 2200 block of Main Street June 18. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

• An officer responded to a complaint of vehicles speeding on Lake Drive; extra patrol was requested.

• An officer responded to a suspicious person report near 80th Street and I-35E June 19. The individual was located and arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and other charges.

• An officer responded to a possible vehicle theft in the 700 block of Aqua Lane June 20. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer observed a traffic violation in the 1400 block of Victor Hugo Boulevard in Hugo June 20. The driver was stopped and cited for using a wireless device while driving.

• An officer took a phone call report regarding an argument between two people over a parking spot at a retail store in the 700 block of Apollo Drive June 21. No crime was committed, and both sides were advised of better ways to resolve issues in the future.

driver was subsequently arrested for DWI. • Officers were dispatched to the 9100 block of Hamline Avenue on a report of an assault June 16. A juvenile was subsequently taken into custody.

MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce, recently held a legislative session wrap-up event at the National Sports Center in Blaine with legislators, local officials and business leaders.

Before discussing pressing issues at the state Capitol, MetroNorth Chamber President Lori Higgins shared results of a recent chamber survey that shows employers are concerned about their ability to hire employees.

“Everyone is aware that companies are having a hard time filling positions, but we wanted to put some actual data behind that to prove that this is a real challenge for north metro businesses,” Higgins said.

From about 40 immediate responses representing all sizes of business in the north metro area, it was clear to Higgins that the hiring crisis is impacting industries of all shapes and sizes.

“Jobs are going unfi lled in not just the $15 per hour category but $20, $25 and higher,” Higgins said.

It is taking longer to fill positions and applicants are not as well suited to the positions as they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Most importantly, this crisis is having a huge impact on a business’ ability to not just grow but sustain their operations. It's causing burnout with current employees, impacting the budget with the extra overtime and causing some to reduce hours of operation, production and customer service,” she said.

Paula Mueller, general manager at Northtown and Maplewood Malls, concurs.

“Many businesses, like ours, are keeping reduced hours, even as pandemic restrictions are going away, because employers can’t find enough people to fill all of the positions,” Mueller said.

Communicating this information to elected officials and key stakeholders is just one piece of moving this issue forward.

“While there is no magic silver bullet to solve this crisis, we will use this data to facilitate impactful initiatives and find meaningful solutions. In fact, the MetroNorth Chamber Workforce Development Committee is currently putting together a plan of how to best assist businesses with retaining their top talent and addressing the burnout/ fatigue problem,” Higgins said.
