Love to Grow On celebrates new home

LINO LAKES — For over 20 years, Love to Grow On has lacked a space it could call its own. After leasing space in various locations over the years, the board of directors and staff are celebrating the completion of the facility’s nearly $4 million building.

Love to Grow On held a grand opening celebration Monday, July 1, at its new child care center located at 6499 Lakota Trail in Lino Lakes. The 13,000-square-foot facility, designed by architect Peter Hilger, features two infant rooms, one waddler room (for older infants/younger toddlers), two toddler rooms, four preschool rooms, one multipurpose school-aged area, an art studio that opens up to an outdoor courtyard, and multiple outdoor spaces.

“It was April 10, 2017, when our board members walked the length and breadth of this lot. Now two years and three months later, we are here on the same lot for this exciting grand opening,” said board Chair Carol Koskinen. Executive Director Linda Bartos King added, “If you are in this room, chances are you are a piece of the puzzle that came together to make this possible, and without any one of those pieces, we probably wouldn't be here today.”

Love to Grow On became a nonprofit organization in August 1998 but didn't find a home until the following year, at Living Faith Church in Circle Pines. “I called every single church in the Yellow

Retired Lexington firefighter trains search and rescue dog

Oscar is only 8 months old, but he is already well on his way to becoming a hero.

Oscar is a golden retriever that belongs to retired Lexington fi refighter (19942017) Bradley Gavin. After Gavin’s Newfoundland/black lab mix passed away, it didn't take him long to fi nd another companion.

“I didn't last two and a half weeks; I knew I needed four legs,” he said. Gavin picked up Oscar in December when the puppy was only 2 months old, and the training began.

Gavin has been a technician with Northstar Search and Rescue for 2 1/2

years. He fi rst heard about the nonprofit organization after he became president of the Lexington Fire charitable gambling organization and attended the state convention.

“I love working with dogs. It is the concept of helping other people in a tangible way and being a part of something that is bigger than myself,” Gavin explained.

Northstar Search and Rescue is an allvolunteer organization that has been in existence for 30 years. The volunteers use their skills and experience to assist law enforcement and other government agencies in finding and recovering lost persons in any environment, whether in urban settings

Pack 432 and CLPD to offer free helmets Among the many new additions to Centerville's 29th annual Fete des Lacs Festival is a booth to help bring an increase in bike safety and awareness of helmet use.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) and Cub Scout Pack 432 will host a helmet safety booth from 6 to 8 p.m. July 17 during Public Safety Night at Centerville Elementary School. The booth will include free helmet fittings by a professional helmet fitter plus new, free helmets for kids of all ages.

Public Safety Night will also include a bike rodeo, fire engines, and K-9 unit, Anoka County Emergency Management drone and fire trailer demonstrations. The Lions concession stand will also be available.

by CLPD, Safe Kids Worldwide (in partnership with Bell) and a Thrivent Community Action Grant.

‘This little car seat went to the clinic’ Minnesota Child Passenger Restraint Law

After their baby has arrived, many new parents bring their bundle of joy out of the hospital to their vehicle and struggle with attaching their car seat securely.

So goes the story of Jury Graeme, a security staff member at St. Croix Regional Medical Center, who was assisting expectant parents with car seat safety at a Car Seat Clinic in Vadnais Heights June 27. Graeme was assisting at the clinic for his final exam as part of a child passenger safety certification course. Upon course completion, he can better assist those parents he sees leave the hospital without knowing how to attach their car seats.

Graeme was one of 16 students who work in public safety, health care or social services that were training parents and parents-to-be how to attach their car seats.

There are five kinds of car seats, several seat belt and latch systems and countless styles and models, so there is a lot to learn in order to assist parents with any type of car seat, said Jessica Whitehead, of Epiphany Caring for Life, a pregnancy resource center for Anoka County residents. It is the only social service agency in the county to offer free infant car seats to lowincome Anoka County residents; in order to do so, staff needs to be car seat safety certified.

The child passenger safety technician course includes written exams and skills assessments, Whitehead said.

Regions Hospital's Car Seat Program holds 25-30 clinics per year in partnership with fire departments, said Coordinator Diana Van Wormer. Most car

• All children under age 8 must ride in a federally approved car seat or booster seat unless the child is 4’9” or taller.

• Safety seats must be installed and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Infants (under 20 pounds and one year of age) must be in a rear-facing safety seat.

• Law applies to all motor vehicles originally equipped with factory-installed seat belts.

• Law applies to all seating positions.

• The driver is responsible. Petty misdemeanor fine for violation is $50, which may be waived if violator shows proof of obtaining a safety seat within 14 days.

• Applies to both residents and non-residents of Minnesota.

• Suspected non-use is a valid basis to stop a motor vehicle.

seat checks are done by hospital staff, local fire department personnel and volunteers. A few clinics per year are staffed by students testing for certification.

Van Wormer, a Grant resident, personally started the clinics about a decade ago.

She is a nurse by trade and suggested her department start a car seat program for parents.

Her supervisor said the hospital didn't have money for that; she didn't believe him, but since he kept saying no, she asked the hospital's foundation for funds instead. She was given $10,000 to start the program.

The clinics have grown in popularity over the years. It used to be that fewer than 10 people would attend a clinic to make sure they were securing their car seat correctly. Last year, the program performed 700 seat checks, Van Wormer said.

Leah and Matt Batesky came from Minneapolis to learn how to securely attach their car seat.

Leah said it is hard to find a car seat clinic in the Twin Cities; they searched for one online.

Technicians-in-training helped them readjust their car seat from behind the driver's seat to the middle of the back seat. The safest place for a car seat is in the middle of the car, furthest from impact, Whitehead noted.

“We know if kids are properly installed in their car seat, they are 80% safer,” Van Wormer said. Unfortunately, about 70 percent of car seats are not installed or used correctly, according to the Vadnais Heights Fire Department.

Vadnais Heights Fire Technician Chris DuBay said he has personally seen the injuries that

improperly secured car seats can cause. But he has also seen serious accidents where a child who was properly secured received only minor injuries.

The Vadnais Heights Fire Department partners with Regions Hospital once a year for a clinic, but it also offers car seat check appointments weekly all year long.

“This is a service we offer to our community,” DuBay said. The department is also willing to do car seat checks for people outside Vadnais Heights, he added. Technicians

Bad news

ike most people, I don’t like bad news.

As Press Publications’ public safety reporter for northern Ramsey County, it is my job to report a fair amount of bad news.

(However, contrary to popular belief, I am not the reporter who wrote the funny sheriff’s reports.

Crime isn’t funny to me.)

I’ve had people tell me to stop reporting bad news; they don’t want to hear that it is happening in their quaint, lovely suburb. But let me try to explain why reporting bad news can be good for the community.

The point of reporting on crime, accidents and other bad news is not to shame those caught or make readers feel like their community is in trouble. The point is to educate and remind people of the consequences of crime and carelessness. Everyone Story makes unwise choices at one time or another. Reporting on them Chaser prevents more bad news from Sara Marie Moore happening.

Imagine growing up in a community where crime and accidents are reported in the local newspaper.

You hear your parents talking about it at the breakfast table. As you are learning to drive, you learn how devastating speeding, texting and driving, or drunk driving can be. This isn’t just a theory in class anymore or something on TV. Someone down the street is affected. You drive more carefully.

Theft, drugs, trafficking, assault and murder: What if local newspapers didn’t acknowledge it?

We’d live in a community in denial while crime and corruption grew steadily in the dark.

I understand that hearing and seeing bad news can be tiring and cause people to respond in fear.

However, I would like to remind you that bad news makes headlines when it is not an everyday occurrence. People don’t get murdered every week in your town. Youth don’t die on the way to school every week. If they did, it would cease to make headlines. That would be really bad news.

My fi rst reporter job was in Williston, North Dakota during the oil boom six years ago. All the media outlets in the country seemed interested in the black gold rush. It seemed that the further away the media outlets came from, the more dramatic the news became. There was a lot of good news in Williston. There was also some really bad news. Those who read the Williston Daily Herald knew that the good news outweighed the bad.

Local newspapers offer a more realistic picture of the extent of bad news than metro and national broadcast media, radio or newspapers. Because they cover a larger area, it can seem the bad news just goes on and on. If you’re overwhelmed at the news, I suggest you tune in to your local newspaper.

When you engage with the news locally, it is easier to respond to the most important purpose behind reporting bad news — to care about those affected. I am not sure if it is humanly possible to consume the amount of bad news on social media and on TV and have the correct response. Most people feel overwhelmed or want to tune it out.

There’s this thing called compassion fatigue.

But good news outweighs the bad on a local scale. Local bad news is also easier to digest.

When you see that someone a few blocks away went through a fi re, you can donate some essentials. When you hear that a local spa was shut down due to sex trafficking, you can join an action group. When someone dies in a tragic accident, you can reach out with condolences.

Bad news can make a community a better place to live, work and play.

Butterfly Milkweed is essential garden plant

M

ost people like pollinators such as butterflies and bees, and many also want to support monarch butterflies. Most people also like pretty flowers and many prefer them on native plants. Here is one way to combine all these attributes in one plant.

Butterfly milkweed, scientific name Asclepias tuberosa, is also known as butterfly weed.

It produces copious nectar.

It is a perennial pollinator plant, attracts hummingbirds and is a host plant for Gardener’s monarch y Grapevine butterfl caterpillars.

It is a native Lynda Ellis Minnesota plant.

Native Americans used fibers from the dried stems to make ropes and weave into cloth. Many tribes used parts of it as food. In colonial America, dried leaves of butterfly milkweed and skunk cabbage were made into a tea to treat chest complaints; this gave butterfly milkweed the alternate

name “pleurisy root.”

Butterfly milkweed does not transplant well because it has a deep woody taproot. It can be divided by using a sharp knife to slice down the length of the taproot. Every piece that has at least one eye, some of the taproot and a few side roots is a viable division. This long taproot means that it is tolerant of dry conditions. But it also can handle moisture; I have it on the high sides of my rain garden.

It has the usual milkweed pods and it is easily propagated from the seeds in these pods. Collect them as the pods just begin to open. It is best to plant the seeds in autumn, to germinate the following spring. They will flower in year three. Note that mature plants may freely selfseed in the landscape if seed pods are not removed prior to them opening. These pods could be given to friends who want them.

It is an essential garden plant because of its large, flat-topped clusters of bright orange flowers at the top of flowering stems.

Though it is a milkweed, it has a watery, not milky sap. This means it can be used for cut flowers. Its leaves are green and

form a nice backdrop for the bright flowers.

The mature plant is 1-2 feet high. It handles sun or part shade and blooms from June to September It is hardy in zones 3-9. I wish you the best with all of your growing efforts.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Sheriff Stuart elected as sergeant-at-arms Sheriff James Stuart was elected and sworn in as the next sergeant-at-arms of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) June 18. This will continue to allow Sheriff Stuart to work with the nation’s sheriffs on issues of public safety that affect Anoka County and citizens across the entire country. The position begins a multiyear ascent to the NSA Executive Board, which will culminate in the final year with Stuart as president of the organization.

NSA is a nonprofit Sheriff James Stuart organization dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among those in the law enforcement field. NSA is a key player in shaping national policy on critical criminal justice and homeland security issues important to the nation’s sheriffs, deputies and police in the halls of Congress, U.S. Courts and at the White House.

Elected in 2010, Stuart is in his third term as Anoka County Sheriff. He serves as a member of NSA Youth Programs Committee, Domestic Violence Committee

and Homeland Security Committee. Stuart also serves on the executive board for the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association.

“Anyone in an elected position is granted the gift of trust by those who voted for them. I am honored and privileged to serve our citizens in Anoka County,” Stuart said. “I am also humbled to be elected by our nation’s sheriffs to play a part in leading the future direction of our nation’s law enforcement professionals as we strive to protect and serve our communities in a manner that preserves the public trust.”

Blaine man killed in motorcycle crash At 4:18 p.m. July 2, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Bunker Lake Boulevard and Lexington Avenue NE on a motor vehicle personal injury accident involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle. CPR was administered to the motorcyclist by first responders and law enforcement.

The motorcyclist, who has been identified as 33-yearold Daniel Ryan Priess, of Blaine, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation by the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Pat Mahr was at his familiar post, running things at Carl Eck Park, over the weekend.

Pat Mahr was supervising Little League baseball playoff games last Saturday — just as he’s done for three decades — at Carl Eck Park in Circle Pines.

“Little League is still the largest kids sports organization in the world,” he mused, “which is kind of surprising considering how much soccer is played in all the other countries.”

Three members of the Johnson family, including a cross country captain, were among the Quad News area runners at Grandma’s Marathon on June 22.

Grace Johnson, 17, covered the 26.2 miles from Two Harbors in Duluth in four hours, 39 minutes, 32 seconds, then waited for her dad, Jason, 44, and brother, Clark, 20, who fi nished in 5:02:26 and 5:02:55, respectively.

“There were actually six of us,” said Grace Johnson, Centennial senior-to-be. “Our buddy Calhoun Gerber came along, and two friends of my dad, Jeff Firkus and Mitch Osterholt. And we had lots of extended family there cheering us on.”

Gerber, a Circle Pines resident like the Johnsons, ran with Jason and Clark Johnson most of the way, and finished in 5:02:48. Firkus, of Marine on St. Croix, finished in 3:35:25.

Osterholt, of Maplewood, finished in 3:39:37.

The Johnson delegation in Duluth totaled 27 people, including the runners.

This was the fourth marathon for Jason, and the first for Grace and Clark, who did a halfmarathon together last year.

The group effort was the idea of a fourth Johnson who wound up not being able to run with them.

“My sister Claire is the one who was really excited about us doing this,” Grace said. “But she had to have surgery.”

a Cougar runner and basketball player like Grace, needed surgery for a congenital problem with bones in her feet, so she’ll be sidelined for a while.

Grace, a three-time state qualifier in cross country, said she made sure not to over-do it in her first marathon, not with cross country coming up.

“I was a little sore, but I’m taking two weeks off before captains’ practices,” she said.

“We’ve got about 800 kids, including 300 girls,” he said, adding that “those numbers have been holding pretty steady” even with several other sports going strong in the Centennial district.

Mahr, whose occupation is running a warehouse, has been in charge of the youth leagues since 1989. He coached for a few years, starting when his daughters Jessica and Shelby played.

“I enjoy giving kids better opportunities to play and and better facilities than when I was a kid,” Mahr said.

“I enjoy the interaction, too. I coached their mothers, and now I get to watch their kids in the program.”

There was no Little League available when he grew up in Chisago City. As an adult, he played town-team baseball and slow pitch softball for a while.

The organization has 66 teams, with boys age 4-12 playing Little League baseball and girls age 4-18 playing Silver Bullets fast-pitch softball. The boys move on to VFW and Legion ball in their teens.

Each new season actually starts Oct. 1, the fi scal new year. The board, usually nine or 10 people, starts planning the budget, dates for tryouts, league schedules, and concessions, and other details.

The group generates and spends about $200,000 per year, which comes mostly from concessions, along with registration fees, donations and hosting tournaments. Families pay about $220 per kid at the top level; that includes uniforms which they keep.

Mahr said he wishes the city would help out more, but funding from tax dollars is less than it once was for youth sports, as it is for a lot of things. Some assistance came from

Jon Tennessen, a Lino Lakes resident who assisted Mahr from 1988 to 2000 when his daughters played softball, offered a tribute to Mahr in a letter to the Quad Community Press.

“Pat continues to organize and lead the league (as he’s done) for the last 30 some years.

Today my grandsons play in the league, and the players are still made to feel that they are the attraction and they are treated as such.”

Mahr was presiding over playoffs for boys 10, 11 and 12 on Saturday and Sunday with all-star teams from Centennial, Shoreview, and St. Paul Parkway competing.

The winners advance to the state tournament, which will be hosted by Centennial from July 24-28. That’s the end for the 10- and 11-yearolds, but the 12-year-old champions advance to a multi-state regional with the ultimate goal of reaching the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Two Centennial teams have advanced to within one win of going to Williamsport, Mahr said — in 2001 and 2005. “Both those teams missed by one run,” he said.

Mahr had a chance to visit the LLWS facilities once, by accident.

“My wife and I were vacationing out there, going to Niagara Falls, and we happened to drive through Williamsport, so we stopped in, introduced ourselves, and got the tour.”

Whether Centennial ever gets a team there, it’s guys like Mahr, and organizations like Centennial Lakes Little League, that make it all possible.

Cougar golfer at state meet Carter Korkowski, Centennial junior, played in the state high school golf tournament on June 9-10, after placing ninth in Section 3AAA to qualify. Korkowski shot 42-42-84 and 43-40-83 for a 167 total, placing 78th in Class AAA at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

or the wilderness. Currently, the organization has 15 members from all over the state and about 10 dogs of various breeds including a goldendoodle, golden retriever, border collie, German shepherd, Bavarian mountain hound and various mutts.

“We have really talented people out there that are dedicated to helping saving lives,” Northstar Search and Rescue Chief Diane Stefanick said.

As a technician, Gavin is responsible for going out on searches with a handler and K-9. He is in charge of communication, mapping, carrying extra water and more. When Oscar's training is complete, he will be Gavin's fi rst search and rescue dog, and Gavin will be able to serve as both a handler and a technician.

Right now, Oscar's training consists mainly of obedience, but he also routinely plays hide-andseek to practice search skills. “They are like kids; the sooner you start reading books to them, the sooner they start reading. It is all a game,” Gavin explained. “His drive is a squeaky ball. For another dog in our group, it is raw bacon. You have to make it as fun as possible for them. It has to be fun and rewarding.”

Gavin said Northstar Search and Rescue is most commonly called upon to help fi nd little kids, people with autism, dementia patients and suicides.

The dogs can search both on land and in water, and some dogs are specifically trained in cadaver searches, which means they search for someone who is likely deceased.

As a person who has attempted suicide multiple times, Gavin said, “My dream is always to fi nd somebody before they actually do it. My life is so much better than I ever could have imagined, and I want to do whatever I can to let them know it does get better.”

Although the organization mainly stays in Minnesota and Wisconsin, it has also been called to nearby states including Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. Stefanick said the group participated in about 30 searches last year and averages between

“We go through some pretty tough conditions ... cold temperatures, swamps, buckthorn, raspberry bushes, rough brush ... the dogs really get sliced up by that stuff,” Gavin explained.

The dogs use various articles such as socks, hats, handkerchiefs, T-shirts, bandanas, shoes, pants etc. to help locate the missing. Gavin said it is very important that whoever gives them an article doesn't transfer their scent to the article. “Use a clean Ziploc baggy and pick it up with the baggy so no hand touches it. You can also wear non-latex gloves,” Gavin explained. Gavin also added it is important for people to report someone missing as soon as they know they are missing, rather than waiting 24 hours. “24 hours is a television thing. If you know somebody is missing, call the police and tell them why you know they are missing.”

Typically it takes around 1 1/2 years to fully train a dog, but every dog and handler are a bit different, Stefanick said. Search and rescue dog teams are trained to nationally recognized standards and certified through organizations such as North American Working Dog Association, United K-9s, National Association for Search and Rescue, and Law Enforcement Training Standards. In addition, technicians are also required to take a class that takes about 30 hours to complete. Northstar Search and Rescue also has minimum requirements for medical training.

In 2003, swarms of parents began touring Love to Grow On after a child care center that had been in operation for 30 years closed down at the Baptist church in Spring Lake Park.

The church asked if Love to Grow On would consider taking over the operation. From 2003-2008, Love to Grow On operated in Spring Lake Park while continuing to run the Circle Pines location. When the church merged with Eagle Brook Church, the child care operation had to find another home. In February 2009, Love to Grow On found a vacant building in Lexington and continued to operate out of that location and Living Faith Church until the new facility opened its doors.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child; and in our case, it takes two villages (and) two cities to raise a child. It takes the city of Lino Lakes to welcome us and also the city of Columbia Heights, which generously shared part of their tax-exempt bond allocation with us,” O'Neil said.

An important feature of the new facility is the outdoor space, designed by an architect specializing in such spaces outdoor architect. Although the space is not complete just yet, the exterior of the building will feature dry riverbeds with a water source and plants, and

“The hardest part about moving was we lost the woods at the church,” Bartos King explained. “It was never the woods that was special, it was the kids, because they made it their own. We can't wait to see what they make out of this, because we know they will, it will

be theirs and they will remember it.”

Land, resources available in Minnesota Technology Corridor A collaborative group including Anoka County, Washington County, Connexus Energy and other regional partners has launched the Minnesota Technology Corridor, an initiative to attract companies to the north metro. The initiative targets companies that can use the high energy capacity, high bandwidth, available land and talented workforce available in the area.

At the center of this effort is a new website: mntechcorridor.com. This site provides detailed information about the area that notes how the region is primed for new business development, especially in the technology industry. There are

1,000-plus acres of land available in the corridor.

In addition, greater than 200-megawatt power capacity with 100% renewable battery storage options is available, significant water/sewer capacity is in place, and there are many access points to fiber-optic lines available from multiple providers. The website also has a site selector component that directs visitors to various-sized sites within the corridor, including five premier sites that range in size from 10 to 250-plus acres.

Other initiative partners include Great River Energy, Xcel Energy, Comcast, CenturyLink, Zayo, Arvig, MIDCO, Parallel Technologies and

the cities of Columbus, Centerville, Lino Lakes, Hugo and Forest Lake.

“This private/public partnership will be a great economic driver for our region,” said Scott Schulte, chair of the Anoka County Board of Commissioners. “I think businesses that come to our area will find sites that fit their needs and easy-to-work-with government officials and staff who are readily available to answer questions and help businesses succeed.”

The next steps for the Minnesota Technology Corridor Partnership will be to present this information to stakeholders that will champion business development in this corridor. Those stakeholders include the Minnesota Department
