It’s hard to imagine an autumn with no football and volleyball. Except maybe during a global pandemic.

Those two sports were moved to a spring season, by decree of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) on Aug. 5.

The plan is to wedge them between the winter and spring seasons, the latter of which will start late and last through June.

The other fall sports — boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and girls tennis — got the goahead, although with shorter seasons and other restrictions due to COVID-19.

Earlier, the MSHSL, advised by Minnesota Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control, had ranked football as the highest-risk fall sport, soccer and volleyball as medium risks, and tennis, cross country and swimming as lowest risk. Volleyball missed the fall cut because indoor sports are more risky than outdoors.

Centennial football coach Mike Diggins accepted the verdict.

“Of course, everyone wanted fall football, but I completely understand,” he said. “I’m OK with everything. The high school league did the best they could.”

He thinks the players will be OK with it.

“Our kids have been working hard all summer and the seniors are happy there will be a season. They all wanted a fall season but it just couldn’t happen. We will be moving forward. We’ll have seven SEE FALL SPORTS, PAGE 6

Kids learn tennis from NCAA champ in Centennial program A tennis coach whose resume includes an NCAA singles championship is tutoring young players this summer in partnership with Centennial Community Education (CCE).

Harsh Mankad captured the 2002 NCAA title as a junior with the Minnesota Gophers. He then

turned pro for 10 years, including appearances at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. As India’s topranked player, he also led his home country’s Davis Cup team.

Mankad is founder and head coach of Tenicity, whose mission is developing players. Through a friendship with Cougar boys tennis coach Dan Haertl, he mentored some Centennial players. CCE then proposed a

beginners — 49 in the grade 1-4 group and 55 in the grade 5-12 group. Each group meets for one hour.

The “high-performance” group of 14 high school and college players meets for two hours. Sessions take place Mondays through Thursdays at Centennial Middle School courts.

Despite having played in the highest levels of tennis, Mankad, 40, enjoys working with dozens of novices, many of them pint-sized.

“My passion is to develop players, and teaching beginners is a wonderful opportunity to help facilitate a joy for the game and strong foundational skills,” said Mankad, adding that it’s exciting to see the novices “enjoying the game and enthusiastic to improve.”

Last year, Mankad worked with JV and varsity level players, and CCE had a separate, limited two-week session for beginners.

very excited about his level of expertise and passion for the game,” said Cori Sendle, CCE director. “I approached him about expanding to the younger group.

“Our summer program has blossomed. Kids are learning

so much in a positive, fun environment. We are hoping to continue lessons into the fall and then winter, using indoor space.”

Mankad said his vision is “establish a strong grassroots program and develop players

to high levels.”

Board sets learning model: 2 days at school, 3 days at home

The Centennial School Board has chosen the hybrid learning model for the coming school year.

Students will have two days in person at the school and three days learning remotely at home each week, announced Brian Dietz, superintendent.

The decision made at the Wednesday, Aug. 6, meeting also includes an option for distance learning only.

“We made the hybrid learning decision because we know we can keep our schools and classrooms safer with fewer people in them,” Dietz explained.

“We believe the safety measures and protocols in place better align with the hybrid model than other learning models. We are monitoring the number of cases in Anoka County and are seeing growth.

Knowing these numbers are changing, we need to be prepared, as the Governor stated, to move between models based on the data.”

The district surveyed employees to assess their plans on working during the pandemic.

“Please know this decision was not taken lightly,”

Dietz stated. “We heard from over 90% of families in a survey designed to gauge schooling preferences and comfortability. We also received feedback from Centennial employees so we could determine our staffing needs for the school year.”

“Throughout the spring and summer, we heard from students, families and staff on the learning models and how we can improve for the future. We also had conversations with our neighboring school districts regarding their learning model plans for the start of the school year.”

Additional information, such as the schedules and details, will be sent via email sent in the next few weeks and posted on the district’s website at isd12. org.

“The safety and health of our students, staff and ultimately our communities, are the district’s top priorities,” Dietz said.

Data from the Minnesota Department of Health will be used to determine the learning model in the future.

The public health situation will be closely watched.

MORE INFO: Centennial’s distance learning will be an option for all families during the school year. Families will have the opportunity to move to or from the distance learning model before the beginning of the quarter. Parents should visit www.isd12.org and click on “back to school plan,” where they will be directed to indicate their intentions to choose distance learning for their student(s) by Aug. 21.

“If we have a spike of cases in our communities,” Dietz said, “we may need to switch to a more restrictive learning model, or when the pandemic passes and the number of cases decrease, we may switch to a less restrictive model, opening our schools to have students back, full-time.”

Centennial’s distance learning will be an option during the school year. Families will have the opportunity to move to, or from, the distance learning model before the beginning of each quarter.

Those who choose to begin the school year in the distance learning model need to sign up by Aug. 21.

Historic bridge lifts spirits with reopening

After a three-year renovation, the Stillwater Lift Bridge is once again open and operating. It reopened with little fanfare, as celebrations were canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but community leaders hope its completed construction will have a positive impact on the St. Croix Valley and surrounding area for years to come.

The bridge underwent a complete renovation to bring it back to its original look while converting it into a pedestrian/bike trail but can still be used for emergency vehicles as necessary. This trail adds to the series of bike trails in and around the Stillwater area.

“It was a long time coming. They had been working on it for several years,” said Robin Anthony, the executive director of the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce.

The bridge was originally built in 1931. It replaced a series of wooden bridges and ferries that people had used to get across the river at the time and addressed a great need to connect

Wisconsin to Minnesota at the time.

“It was always made out of wood, and it is my understanding that they would often catch on fire,” said Ted Kozlowski, the mayor of Stillwater.

The steel bridge was a major innovation for its time—it was essentially a permanent solution to burnt out or broken bridges and navigating ferries.

The bridge was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1989. Its age may have been a contributing factor in the long-awaited reopening.

“It’s a historic bridge, and they actually had to manufacture a (replacement) part because they don’t make those parts anymore,” Anthony said.

Some floods in the area also contributed to the wait for the reopening. But the wait is now over.

“They essentially restored the entire thing. It’s a 1931 bridge, and they went through and repaired and replaced every nut and bolt on that bridge,” Kozlowski said.

“They’ve renovated it back to its original color, too, which is green,” said

Christie Rosckes, marketing director of Discover Stillwater. “Especially in the winter, I think the green really pops in the snowy background.”

The bridge’s reopening was initially going to be accompanied by a large celebration but because of the pandemic was postponed until the bridge’s first anniversary of reopening. Despite the celebration’s cancellation, the bridge reopening has still drawn many to the downtown area to walk across the scenic bridge for the first time.

“There are a lot of locals coming down to walk the loop, and we’ve also had just hundreds of people down here on the weekends walking and riding on the lift bridge,” Anthony said.

“Everybody in town, of course, knew about it. There were a lot of people wanting to be the first people across when it opened. It’s definitely been the talk of the town,” Kozlowski said.

The reopening has also been good for business thus far, drawing in not only locals, but also people from out of town and leading them to rent bikes, go on Segway tours and visit ice cream shops, boutiques and restaurants during their

visit. Visitors, who are drawn to the path for walking, biking and simply taking in the view, often stay for the local entertainment.

“I think people have just flooded to it, and they love it. We’ve heard nothing but positive things,” Rosckes said.

With proper social distancing, visiting the reopened bridge is a COVID-friendly activity for those bored at home.

“It’s outdoors. It’s something people can do even when we’re in a complete lockdown,” Rosckes said.

“It’s a huge attraction. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. We have this almost perfect 5-mile loop that’s absolutely perfect for people to bike on and walk on,” Kozlowski said.

The bridge is now back to its original form, right down to the color, but is completely new and ready for walkers, bikers and visitors.

“If you haven’t done it, I strongly encourage folks to get out and do it.

It takes about an hour and a half,” Anthony said.

The Stillwater Lift Bridge is owned by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Empowered in pink: Girls learn lifelong lessons

The seven-week program now has expanded from grades 5-6 to grades 4-7.

This year’s program has 41 girls entering grades 4 and 5, and 45 girls entering grades 6 and 7. This means even more girls can develop tools to use when dealing with stress, confronting stereotypes, standing up to peer pressure and understanding self-worth.

Fourth grader Greta A. was happy to see her friends and spend time outside. “It’s fun to be able to hang out and have fun. I really like to learn about this stuff,” Greta A. said.

The group now meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Centennial Middle School instead of the high school.

The larger spaces allow for better social distancing.

“We have changed much of our curriculum and activities this summer to allow for social distancing … and with a little creativity, we are still offering a great learning

experience,” Sendle said.

The two hours are divided into 50 minutes of a fun physical activity and 50 minutes devoted to a specific life lesson. Over the course of this summer, the program will cover topics such as body image, self-worth, nutrition, healthy relationships and money management.

Some of those lessons are presented by Affinity Plus Credit Union, Alexandra House, the Lino Lakes Ambassadors and Dr. Carli Braun Kody, a licensed psychologist specializing in mental health, courage and resilience.

“We do as much outside as we can. Inside, we are using the cafeteria and the auditorium as our main gathering area. We have more staff this summer and the staff stays with the same group of girls,” Sendle said.

Each girl is given her own supply kit that includes markers, scissors and glue.

Kits are not shared with another participant.

have fun,” Anderson said.

For a life-inspired activity game called Mad City Money, participants tried to stay on a monthly budget while purchasing a vehicle, getting a job, raising children and much more. To adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on social distancing, cones were placed on the ground to help the girls spread out while they each waited for their turn.

The staff also makes sure to remind the girls to practice safe social distancing.

“We are helping the girls understand that it isn’t all about keeping themselves safe, but also about keeping their friends safe, too,” Anderson said.

All the participants’ hard work will pay off at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, when the girls can celebrate their achievements and empowerment by running or walking in the More Than Pink 5K. Family and friends are encouraged to participate and can pay $5 the night of the run to do so.

Teens struggle to find summer jobs in COVID-19 pandemic

Part-time jobs, particularly in the summer, have long been a rite of passage for teenagers. These days, however, fewer and fewer of them are spending their vacations working. Though youth employment rates saw a modest improvement in recent years, any gains they might have seen this summer have since been dashed by COVID-19.

Twenty years ago, about half of American teenagers held jobs, according to the Pew Research Center. But in the decade following the 2008 financial crash, when low-skilled, entry-level jobs were suddenly few and far between, that figure hovered around 25%.

In recent years, summer teen employment has been on a slow but steady incline, from 27.2% in 2014 to 30.8% in 2019, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This summer, that figure was projected to hit nearly 33%, the highest level since before the Great Recession. But then COVID-19 struck, and many places that traditionally hire teenagers for the summer—like pools, movie theaters, clothing retailers and camps— shut down.

The COVID-19 pandemic and economic shutdown have made for a tough summer job market for teens.

Only about 23% of those ages 16-19 are spending the summer working, a historic low.

That national trend rings true in local teens' experiences, too. Seventeen-year-old Gina Whitebird, who attends White Bear Lake Area High School – South Campus, said that she is among the only one of her friends currently employed.

One day each week, Whitebird delivers newspapers for Press Publications. She applied for the job in February before COVID-19 cases were widespread throughout Minnesota, but her first day wasn't scheduled until mid-March. “I wasn't going to be able to deliver for a while, just because I was going to be on spring break. Then once spring break was over for me, quarantine started,” she said. “Thankfully, I found out that I was considered an essential worker, so I was able to actually start.”

Whitebird is not required to wear a mask while on the job. However, she said that she has been choosing to wear one anyway as an extra precaution.

“I feel a little bit better about it, especially because I sometimes pass people out running or walking their dogs,” she explained. “It just makes me feel like I'm being safer, and I'm trying to be as safe as possible.”

Because her current job with Press Publications is only for a few hours one day a week, Whitebird is currently searching for a second job to supplement her income, though she has not yet had much luck.

Finding an opening amid the pandemic is hard enough, never mind the typical trouble of securing an interview.

“Most places I've ever gone to asking, they're always like, 'Oh, yeah, sure. We're hiring,' and then they'll give me a slip or a website or something, and I'll go and fi ll it out,” she said. “But then with most of them, I don't ever get called back. I usually have to call them myself. But most of them still don't end up taking me, eventually.”

Whitebird said that she is not picky when it comes to employment. She worked at a grocery store for about a month and is not interested in working at another one, but other than that, she just wants to find a job.

“I went to a gas station yesterday and applied, and I'm going to apply to Walgreen's and a few clothing stores,” she said. “I'm kind of just looking for anything, honestly.”

Whitebird added that come September, she hopes that she can return to Pine Tree Apple Orchard.

“That's a job I've had every single fall for the past three years. It's made me some pretty good money, but I also especially appreciate it because I felt like I was valued there,” she said. “Every year, I kept

moving up and having more responsibilities.”

But as with many things throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, in the meantime, she will have to wait and see.

For the fourth consecutive year, the More Than Pink program offered by Centennial Community Education is empowering young women to stay true to themselves while training for a 5K. This year the staff has had to make many changes to the program because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the message has stayed the same: “Be Strong. Be Bold. Be Smart.”

Middle school can be a hard time for any young woman who is starting to explore who they are and what their place in the world is. By intertwining physical activity with lessons about celebrating their bodies, embracing their talents and honoring their voices, the More Than Pink program teaches the participants lifelong lessons.

“We have had more returning girls this year than ever before. It’s really cool to see girls come back.

We can see a difference in maturity each year,” said Dani Anderson, a lead staff member who built this year’s curriculum.

“This year we expanded — not the best timing — but we decided this before COVID-19. This is such an important program for girls that we wanted to serve as many girls in the community as we could,” said Community Education

So much uncertainty

T

he pandemic we are in is taking its toll on people, on business, on health care and some of our freedoms.

These are uncertain times in the economy. Will jobs be there? Will schools be open with traditional classroom teachers? When will a vaccine be available to treat this frightening disease? And ultimately, when will the fear of so many uncertain things be stabilized?

I have asked a lot of people how they are dealing with the stress, fear and uncertainty. The responses have varied About the and some may be worth considering.

Many people have said they are not going where there are groups of people and do grocery shopping and other shopping very carefully and always with a mask.

Some churches are starting to open up in a limited way, but seniors and those with pre-existing conditions say they will worship with church services online for an indefinite period.

Many companies have improved the safety of their offices by providing good ventilation, space between workers and plexiglass shields. Some companies are able to have a number of their staff work from home and have made provisions with computers and phone systems.

But there are many restaurants and retailers that haven’t reopened and many are shutting down totally.

The Payroll Protection Plan has given some very solid relief to small business, but more help will be needed.

Government programs have been very helpful in bringing stimulus checks that help with food, rent, mortgage payments, insurance and transportation.

Various parts of the country are spiking with the disease. There are those who feel they can do whatever they want in the name of freedom so they are not wearing masks and practicing distance in groups.

Little by little we are hearing encouraging news on therapies and vaccines that are now in trials.

It is hard to know who and what to believe. Generally, I have more confidence in our medical community than I do in the political arena. You probably feel that way, too.

When someone in a family is stricken with the virus, it’s difficult for the rest of the family in the same household. The larger the family, the more difficult.

Good advice is to use common sense, don’t take chances, and wear a mask whenever you are indoors in public. If you have symptoms, seek immediate treatment.

It becomes difficult for people in nursing homes and senior facilities, and even in your own homes, where you feel restricted. People need people to interact with. Pick up the phone and call family and friends, send emails or write letters.

The Local Journalism Sustainability Act, introduced on July 16, is a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by U.S. Representatives Ann Kirkpatrick, a Democrat from Arizona, and Dan Newhouse, a Republican from Washington state. In brief, the legislation provides for tax credits for subscribing to a local newspaper, payroll credit for paying journalists who provide local news, and credit for advertising in local newspapers and local media.

This act responds to the insidious way the pandemic has deeply damaged American communities in a malevolent cycle. It forced the shuttering of many local businesses that stopped advertising in their local

paper. Newspapers, which have seen their revenues plummet, responded by laying off the people who bring the news or dropping the days they publish. That threatens the access to vital news by people in the community who themselves may be out of a job temporarily or permanently and can no longer afford newspaper subscriptions.

Here’s how the Local Journalism Sustainability Act would help everyone: Credit for advertising in local newspapers and local media.

Businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees would be eligible for a five-year non-refundable tax credit to spend on advertising in local newspapers or local radio or television stations. The credit, up to $5,000 in the fi rst year and $2,500 in each of the next four years, would cover 80% of advertising costs in the fi rst year and 50% annually thereafter. This provision helps local businesses as well as local media companies.

Credit for local newspaper subscriptions. The act provides for a non-refundable tax credit of up to $250 per year to help cover the costs of subscriptions to local newspapers, in print or digital form, that primarily produce content related to news and current events. The credit would cover 80% of subscription costs in the first year, and 50% thereafter and helps consumers while incentivizing support of local news organizations.

Payroll credit for journalists. This five-year refundable tax credit could be used by local newspapers on compensation of its journalists up

to $50,000 a year. This provision will go a long way toward ensuring that communities keep their local news coverage.

This simple yet comprehensive legislation helps the three keys to trustworthy, fair and accurate local journalism: citizens, business owners and journalists. This is not a bailout or handout to any of these elements of a thriving community — but an urgently needed assist with a strictly limited timeframe responding to an unprecedented public health and economic crisis.

Killed in action in Pacific, pilot left legacy

Roger Benson was a grown man when World War II broke out. The son of Herman and Frances Benson, he was born in 1916, one of seven children who learned to fly on a grass strip on his family's farm next to Bald Eagle Lake.

He was not obligated to enlist but felt he had a skill to bring to the war, noted Sara Markoe Hanson, executive director of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society. “He was a trained pilot who felt he could make a difference in the war effort.”

Benson joined the Army Air Corps and was sent to the Pacific. He died of burns Nov. 8, 1944, suffered when his transport plane was hit by enemy fi re and burst into flames upon landing in North Maluku, Indonesia. He survived the crash but went back into the plane to save others. When the family was notified, they didn't get a lot of details, according to Hanson.

His family dedicated Benson Airport, fi rst called Roger’s Field, as a memorial to him.

Another White Bear aviator and Vietnam veteran, Darryl LeMire, said his part in Benson Airport history has to do with a commitment to carry on a legacy left by Roger Benson.

"Roger brought aviation to this place. He learned to fly in the ’30s, served in the Pacific as a pilot in WWII and was killed in action Nov. 8, 1944. I look at that as a responsibility to maintain this place for others to enjoy, and to give people the gift of aviation like the donation his family gave in spirit back to Roger.”

An article appeared in the White Bear Press after Benson died a hero Nov. 8, 1944 in North Maluku, Indonesia. He is buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

On Aug. 14, 1945, Japan surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. The formal surrender took place Sept. 2 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored at the time in Tokyo Bay. The battleship is now a museum and is permanently moored at Pearl Harbor.

COMMUNITY BRIEF MnDOT seeks comments on 10-year plan MnDOT has released its draft Capital Highway Investment Plan (CHIP). The plan details MnDOT’s proposed capital investments for the next 10 years. The fi rst four years represent state highway projects in the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which is MnDOT’s committed construction program. The CHIP also identifies projects in the six years after the current STIP, which are the agency’s planned investments. The CHIP is updated every year to adjust existing projects and add new planned projects.

MnDOT is seeking comments about the list of planned projects. MnDOT generally begins scoping projects five to six years in advance, which are 2025 and 2026 for this year’s CHIP. Now is the best time to provide a comment on projects planned for those years. If you have general questions about the CHIP document, contact Josh Pearson at joshua.pearson@state.mn.us. If you have questions or comments about a specific project, contact your MnDOT district planning director.

Anoka County employees receive Awards of Excellence The Anoka County Board of Commissioners recognized nine Anoka County employees during the annual Awards of Excellence presentation at the July 28 board meeting.

Employees were chosen by their peers for the awards. The employees were commended for the exemplary work they have accomplished that streamlines processes at the county, saves money and improves services for the public.

The recipients are as follows: Tami Allen: Modeling our Mission Award — Allen, administrative services assistant with Public Health and Environmental Services (PHES), developed a system within PHES that reduced the onboarding process for new hires from 6 hours to 1.5 hours.

Paul Talbot: Performance Award — Talbot, an investigator with the Anoka County Attorney’s Office, intercepted and disrupted an ongoing theft by fraud and was able to recover $920,000 that was stolen from Anoka County.

Kelli Hill: Leadership Award — Hill, an administrative supervisor in the Justice Services Division, was recognized for her outstanding management, training and mentoring skills.

Andrea Struzyk: Customer Service Award — Struzyk, a victim witness specialist in the County Attorney’s Office, helped witnesses through testifying in an extremely emotional case; the office was successful in the trial due in large part to her efforts.

Charlie Teff, Anders Oredson and Joseph Gerard: Teamwork Award — Teff, a GIS developer, Oredson, a parks maintenance superintendent, and Gerard, a summer intern in the Parks Department, worked together to design and implement a parks asset management collector app. The data collected through the app was used to inventory park assets, track maintenance cycles and map the distribution of features and amenities throughout the various county parks.

months to train. We will be a young team anyway, with 21 of 22 (starters) graduating.”

Cougar volleyball coach Jackie Rehbein-Manthey had a similar reaction.

“The MSHSL Board of Directors had some tough decisions to make for fall sports.

Being an indoor sport worked against us. But we still have a chance to play this school year and we are thankful for the opportunity.” She had held out hope for a fall season.

“Holding open gym, and knowing clubs were playing their summer league matches, and AAU basketball tournaments were being played,” she said, “I was hoping we would still get a chance to play this fall, with a reduction in matches and specifically no tournaments, due to the high number of players at one location.”

Seasons in all sports will be reduced by 30%. For football, that means a six-game regular season, rather than eight. In volleyball, it means 14 playing dates and no invitational tournaments.

Justin Doce, senior football captain, reflected, “All of us were hoping there’d be a fall season, but mostly we are happy the season didn’t get canceled. We’ll have to fi nd other things to do in the fall.

Our coaches encourage us to play other sports and develop different muscles.”

Sydney Petersen, Cougar volleyball senior, had a “bittersweet” reaction.

“Our team is very excited to have an opportunity to play and we are going to do everything we need to get where we want to be at the end,” she said. “I am disappointed we won't be playing in fall, but it is just more time that we are able to train and get better as a team.”

Jadyn Clarner, another senior, called the news “surprising,” but added, “Right now, we are all excited that we still have a season to prepare and look forward to.”

As for their fall plans, Clarner said, “All of the volleyball starters are volleyball only, but some of us might try soccer or tennis, in order to still play a fall sport.” Petersen said she’s heard some teammates will give soccer a try, including her sister Mattie. Most players will have fall volleyball in a club.

“This is a year of fi rsts and lasts for all of us,” Petersen said, “and nobody really knows how it's going to work out, but we are going to do everything we can to make it a great one.”

While cross country, tennis and swimming seemed safe bets for fall, soccer and volleyball were on the bubble.

Soccer coaches were relieved at the news.

“Excited for an opportunity to represent our communities,” said boys coach Jeffrey Ottosen about his reaction. “Excited for players to return to structured training and showcasing years of development. Thankful for the opportunity to make new memories and lead our school district safely back into experiences that could be taken for granted.”

He added, “We appreciate all of the efforts and expertise of the MSHSL to use their best judgment to guide us during these complex times.”

Girls coach Ginger Flohaug had previously announced that her 20th season will be her last.

“I had my fingers crossed that we would be playing,” she said, “and I could coach this

program for one more season, even if it looks or feels a little bit different. One more memory.”

And it’s in the fall.

“There is nothing like the cool fall nights under the lights,” she said.

The shortened schedules for the fall season are being worked on. There will be fewer dates and no multiple-school invitationals.

Scrimmages are canceled.

Football and volleyball teams, meanwhile, will practice in the fall under whatever guidelines the MSHSL will issue.

Of course, any plans made now can change at any time, depending on developments in the pandemic.

"The last six months have been challenging in many ways but health and safety have been and will continue to be the foundation of every decision made at both the state level and at Centennial," said Brian Jamros, activities director.

"We will continue to adapt and adjust as needed this fall and in the future in regards to sports at CHS." Rehbein-Manthey summarized: “2020 has been a difficult year for so many people. Adults and kids alike.

We need to remain flexible, adapt and keep our fingers crossed. Everyone wants kids to be playing sports, back to school, and back to their normal routines, but we are going to be experiencing a new normal, once we are back at it.”

During stay-at-home summer, yard work rentals are brisk business

While many businesses have been pummeled by the COVID-19 pandemic, some are in position to capitalize on situations caused by it.

Case in point: Shops that provide equipment to people suddenly paying lots of attention to their lawns.

Just ask All Seasons Rental, open seven days a week in Lino Lakes.

“People stuck at home are doing a lot more yardwork this summer,” explained chief operating officer Bjorn Carlson, whose parents, Scott and Shelly, have owned the business for 24 years. Projects that homeowners have been thinking about, but putting off for years, are getting done. “Now they have

time at home to do them,” he said.

Stump grinders are an especially hot item. “They’re number one, most popular,” Carlson said. Also sought after, he said, are wood chippers, small lawn and garden equipment, and walk-behind Bobcats, used for spaces too small to accommodate the full-sized machine.

When the pandemic took hold, Carlson said, the fi rm was “pretty worried.”

Normally, he said, outdoor parties are a lucrative source of business, but nobody is renting tables and chairs in this summer of social distancing. “We’re not doing anything with partying events now,” he said.

They expected as much. But they were pleasantly surprised by the upsurge in lawn projects. “We’re having a pretty good summer,” he acknowledged.

Ahhh, the Dog Days of August are here. The weather is a little less active. Winds tend to taper and humidity hangs in the air and the sound of cicadas ďŹ lling the air. This was pretty much this August until this weekend, which ďŹ nished in sort of a bang. Saturday it was a mix of clouds, sun and nuisance rain. Nothing we couldn't plan around. Sunday was pretty much the same. We had to dodge a few sprinkles and a nice afternoon shower.

It all looked nice but thunder started rumbling over the southern metro in the evening and a very slow moving thunderstorm dumped up to 6 inches of rain along the 494 southern corridor. Thunder persisted into the early morning hours. It was tough to get sleep with the window open. Another active weekend ahead? Nature Note: I've released 2 monarch butteries and I have 3 more in my monarch hotel in the pupa stage.

POLICE REPORTS â&#x20AC;¢ Officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Danube Street in response to a residential burglar alarm.

After investigating, officers determined there was no problem. â&#x20AC;¢ A property damage report involving two vehicles was taken in the 500 block of Lois Lane July 30. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers received a traffic complaint involving a local business July 30 and advised the business to instruct its employees to exercise more caution while driving. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer provided guidance to a member of the public who had concerns over witness statements made in a police report July 30. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers were dispatched on a report of a disorderly male at a business in the 7400 block of Village Drive July 30. Officers mediated the situation and the male left without incident. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers were dispatched to a 911 hang-up in the 2000 block of Ash Street July 30. Officers investigated and determined there were no apparent problems. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers responded to a radio call of a suspicious vehicle in the 2000 block of Tart Lake Road July 30.

Officers checked the area and the vehicle was not located. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of Birch Street July 31 because the vehicle license information showed the registered owner was linked to an arrest warrant. The adult male driver was arrested and booked at jail for driving after cancellation inimical to public safety. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer stopped a vehicle in the 7500 block of Lake Drive Aug. 1 because the vehicle had been entered stolen by another agency. The adult female driver was arrested and booked at jail for receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a hypodermic needle and no Minnesota driver's license. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer received a call of found stolen property in the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue Aug. 1. The property was connected to a theft in another city and the items were returned to the owner. â&#x20AC;¢ A homeowner reported receiving a new debit card in the mail Aug. 2 that they had not applied for.

The card was applied for out of state and is likely connected with an attempt at unemployment fraud.

This incident is being investigated.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: â&#x20AC;¢ A Circle Pines resident reported that his trailer and two ATVs were stolen from his garage overnight July 29. The loss is estimated to be $5,500. â&#x20AC;¢ Police took a suspicious activity report in the 10 block of West Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines July 29. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers arrest a man in Lexington on warrant charges July 29. â&#x20AC;¢ A downed tree blocking the roadway in the 60 block of West Road in Circle Pines was reported July 30. Officers contacted the homeowner, who agreed to clean it up. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers located a suspicious vehicle in the 9300 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington July 30. The driver, an adult male, was arrested on multiple charges. â&#x20AC;¢ A theft was reported in the 10 block of West Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines July 31. â&#x20AC;¢ Police received a phone call July 31 regarding patrons and employees at Cowboys Bar and Grill in Lexington who were reportedly not wearing masks. â&#x20AC;¢ Medical officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Dupre Road in Centerville Aug. 1 following report of a medical emergency involving an adult male. He was cared for on scene, and the incident was cleared. â&#x20AC;¢ Suspicious activity was reported in the 9000 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington Aug. 1. â&#x20AC;¢ Drug activity was reported in the 50 block of West Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines Aug. 1, but officers determined the report was unfounded. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer pulled over a driver for a stop sign violation in Circle Pines Aug. 1 and reported a marijuana odor coming from the vehicle. A search yielded a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The driver and passenger were verbally warned. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers responded to report of a medical emergency in the 7000 block of Brian Road in Centerville Aug. 2. â&#x20AC;¢ Property damage in the 200 block of Galaxy Drive in Circle Pines was reported Aug. 2. The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: â&#x20AC;¢ An employee of a business in the 7100 block of Otter Lake Road reported finding an unlocked door when they arrived at work the morning of July 28. Officers checked the interior of the building and found no problems. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer took a harassment and trespassing report from a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive July 28. â&#x20AC;¢ A resident reported a suspicious man soliciting door to door in the 6500 block of White Oak Road July 28.

Officers checked the area but were not able to locate anyone. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer responded to report of unsecured items falling from a vehicle and into the roadway in the 6200 block of Hodgson Road July 29. The officer made contact with the suspected offender, and the items were removed from the roadway. â&#x20AC;¢ A delayed theft report was taken from a resident in the 7600 block of Appaloosa Lane July 29. The resident stated that he only wanted the incident recorded. â&#x20AC;¢ A loose dog was found in the 7400 block of Main Street July 29 and brought to a nearby animal shelter. â&#x20AC;¢ An officer stopped a vehicle in the 7500 block of Lake Drive July 29 after witnessing the driver fail to stop at a red light, then cross two traffic lanes and strike a concrete median curb. The driver, an adult male, was arrested for driving under a controlled substance and charged with third-degree DWI. â&#x20AC;¢ A smoking stove inside a home in the 500 block of Wood Duck Trail was reported July 29. An officer and the fire division responded to the call. After checking the area, the fire division determined that no fire hazard remained. â&#x20AC;¢ Theft from a motor vehicle was reported in the 200 block of Woodridge Court July 29. The investigation is ongoing. â&#x20AC;¢ A caller in the 1500 block of Stoneybrook Drive reported a possible missing person July 29. The person was located a short time later, and no further assistance was needed. â&#x20AC;¢ Officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of Lakeview Drive following a report of a suspicious vehicle July 29. They checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.
