LEXINGTON- The Lexington City Council members listened attentively while representatives from Centennial Schools gave their annual report on the state of the schools in the district at the Sept. 6 meeting. Scott Johnson, executive director of teaching and learning, provided testing statistics that paint an excellent picture of Centennial Schools. Annual math and reading scores were 12.7 percent and 7.8 percent higher respectively than the statewide average. Overall, the district’s annual test scores were 15.7 percent higher than the statewide average and fouryear graduation rates are at 94.7 percent. Centennial Elementary School Principal Kathy Kaiser talked about the use of a program called Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). PBIS is a different way to treat students with behavioral problems. Instead of punishing them for their behavior, they focus on re-teaching them in an effort to change their behavior. Teachers try to congratulate students five times a day for positive behavior. The Advancement Via Individual Determination Program (AVID) is used to help middle school and high school students prepare for college. Students in the program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for higher education. “Sixth graders are in the program for the fi rst time this year,” said Middle School Principal Bob Stevens.

Fall Festival just around the corner BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LEXINGTON — Now that summer is over and children are back in school, the Lexington Fall Festival is fast approaching. This year's celebration will be held Sept. 21-23 and will be “the best year yet,” according to Heidi Zaworski, Cowboy Saloon’s operations manager. This will mark the third annual celebration. A new event this year will be an outdoor movie shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tree of Life Assembly of God Church, located at 3905 Woodland Road. For those who know Pastor Troy

Fields, it is no surprise that the movie selection is “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” as he is a self-proclaimed Star Wars geek. After the Fall Festival Committee sent out the outdoor movie idea and said they were looking for someone to host/sponsor the event, Fields glady stepped up. “I believe that the church is supposed to be the center of the community, and as far as I know, we are the only church in Lexington,” he explained. “If we engage the world with love instead of finger-pointing, we might actually get somewhere.” The church recently pur-

Other new activities this year include different inflatables than in past years, Yoga in the Park (10 a.m. on Sunday) and Waterball, hosted by the Lexington Fire Department at noon on Saturday. Friday's schedule includes a Broadway Builders ribbon-cutting, pasta dinner, ice cream social and live music. Saturday's schedule will feature games, dunk tank, petting zoo, business/art and crafts showcase, climbing wall, Lions booya, music, fire department open house and a

street dance. On Sunday, there will be a Vikings party and bingo. Zaworski said the festival is still in need of additional volunteers and support as well as vendors including businesses, nonprofit organizations and arts and crafts for the showcase Saturday.
