Lexington mayor resigns effective Sept. 30 BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LEXINGTON — Following nearly five years in office, the mayor of Lexington has announced his plans to resign from the position. Mayor Mark Kurth fi rst announced his plans to resign at a City Council work session last month. His last meeting will be Sept. 19 and his resignation will be effective Sept. 30. Kurth said he had to resign, after his decision to relocate to

Blaine. “There wasn't one house for sale in Lexington,” he said. Kurth didn't move too far away, however, as he is still close enough to remain on the Lexington Fire Department (LFD). Kurth was elected in November 2014 and took office in January 2015. He has lived in Lexington since 2007 and has served as a member of the LFD since May 2008. Since 2015, he has served as the Lexington Fire Relief Association’s gambling manager. One of the city's accomplishments that

Kurth is proud of is the restoration of professionalism on the council. “We were all able to work together professionally,” he said. “We didn't always agree, but we respected everyone's opinion. We were able to work through it and compromise for the betterment of the city.” The council's mindset has also changed, he noted. “I look at the way city was run and the people that were on the board when I first moved in, and I see how Mark Kurth

New public works facility discussion continues BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LINO LAKES — Whether the city should construct a new public works facility was the main topic of discussion at the Sept. 3 City Council work session. The agenda item has been discussed by the council various times since CNH Architects presented an updated Public Works Site Analysis and Space Needs Study in April 2017. The existing public works building, located at 1189 Main St., was built in 1971. Financial adviser Paul Steinman, from Baker Tilly, visited the council to explain the city's authority to issue bonds for the project, the types of bonds it could consider issuing and the potential impact the project could have on the city's levy. Finance Director Sarah Cotton explained that the purpose of the conversation was to simply continue the discussion on the topic. She noted that although the $6 million project cost and construction in 2021 was used to provide the council with some examples, the project scope and timing could be adjusted. She also clarified that the $6 million would not include soft costs — that is, costs that are not directly related to facility construction — and that after financing the total cost would likely be closer to $8 million. Two types of bonds could be used for a new public works facility, including capital improvement plan (CIP) bonds and lease revenue bonds, Steinman SEE PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY, PAGE 9
