Lexington festival kicks off fall season

Despite the temperatures in the mid90s, volunteers trudged through the heavy brush on Peltier Island to plant 12 hackberry trees Saturday, Sept. 15.

Kevin Fitzpatrick, past president of the Chain of Lakes Rotary, said the organization got the idea for the service project after fellow Rotarian Jeff Karlson, Lino Lakes city administrator, invited Lino Lakes Environmental Coordinator Marty Asleson to a meeting to discuss the history of Peltier Island and its blue heron rookery.

“It seemed like a natural Rotary service project. Tree planting is one of the main service projects that Rotary Clubs around the world undertake,” Fitzpatrick explained. “We have a very special opportunity—to help maintain the trees for the blue heron rookery, one of the largest in North America.”

The Peltier Island blue heron rookery had 1,149 nests in 1996. In 1997-98, the late biologist Art Hawkins, a resident of Lino Lakes, noticed herons were abandoning their nests. In 2004, University of Minnesota graduate student Andy Van Duyke conducted a study that found heron chicks were being eaten by raccoons. The number of nesting herons went down to 36 in 2005.

Tattoo cover-up film qualifies for Academy Award run

LINO LAKES — Along with several audience choice awards at fi lm festivals throughout the U.S., a Lino Lakes director’s short documentary has qualified for the 2018 Academy Awards.

Cy Dodson, a resident of both Lino Lakes and Minneapolis, is the director of the short fi lm, “Beneath the Ink,” which premiered in Cleveland in April. After meeting a variety of requirements such as running in a theater for a week in Los

Angeles, his documentary is eligible to compete in the Short Documentary Category of the Academy Awards.

Dodson is originally from Ohio.

After obtaining a communications degree, his career began in the news production industry, which brought him to Minnesota in 2000 when he took a job at KSTP. He did that for a while but didn’t feel the career was allowing him to express his creativity.

“There is only so much you can do in the news business ... being a photographer/editor, that is what you are unless you want to be

news director or something, but I don’t like the news that much to be surrounded by it all of the time,” he said.

That’s when Dodson decided to enter the freelance world and eventually founded his own corporate video production company, Triumph Pictures, in 2008. He has done work for Bell Bank, McDonald’s and nonprofit organizations, to name a few clients.

Since that time, volunteers have worked diligently to keep raccoons out of the nesting trees by attaching metal flashing around the trees to prevent them from climbing. Wayne LeBlanc, who is one of the original rookery advocates and volunteers, said January 2018 was the best nest count since 2001, with 342 nests in 106 trees. Great egrets are also known to spend time on the island.

In addition to protecting the wildlife, another aim of the project was to help replace trees that have died or will die in the future.

“About a third of the trees on the island are black ash, and the herons nest in these ash. The rookery will lose these nesting trees in the next several years because of emerald ash borer (EAB). Storms have also pushed over a number of trees that the herons nested in,” Asleson explained. “In order to help with habitat, the Rotary decided to plant some trees for heron habitat that will eventually replace doomed ash trees and fi ll in canopy holes created by storms.”

Asleson noted that hackberry is one of the historic, northern hardwood forest species that has existed in the area for thousands of years. Other tree species on the island include bitternut hickory and basswood.

“The Chain of Lakes Rotary Club tries to engage in one service project every month. During the school year, we mentor students at Centennial High School,” Fitzpatrick said. “Other service projects this summer have included helping out with Habitat for Humanity, creating the new playground at Rice Lake Elementary School and hosting the annual Officer Shawn Silvera Rotary Run.” Fitzpatrick said the hope is for Peltier Island to become a yearly project for the Rotary Club.

“We want to help the blue heron rookery continue on into the future. The blue herons need to have their nests fairly high off the ground, so we need to help keep it sustainable,” he said. “Blue herons are the SYMBOL for Lino Lakes.”

Early voting now open Early voting opened Friday, Sept. 21. By law, citizens can vote in person or by mail 46 days before an election.

People can vote early in person during business hours at their county courthouse or government center. Many cities also offer the opportunity to vote early. Lists of early voting locations can be found at mnvotes. org.

All in-person locations will be open Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. When voting by mail, voters request a ballot that is sent to them. Ballots can be mailed back or dropped off at an early voting location.

If a person requests a ballot, that does not mean that they must vote by mail. They can change their mind and vote in person. People voting early have until the week before the election to change their vote.

Early voting is not only convenient, it is growing in popularity. In Minnesota’s primary election, held just over a month ago on Aug. 14, more than 135,200 voters used this option. This played a part in pushing the number of people voting in a primary to 902,119, the highest number of primary voters since 1982.

The excitement to vote in the primary is carrying over to the general election. In early September, the number of newly registered voters in Minnesota was double that at the same point in 2014, the last midterm election. Nearly 70 percent of those registering were between the ages of 18 and 30. This is incredibly encouraging, because in the 2014 election, Minnesota dropped from being the top voter turnout state to number six.

Puppy miracle

M

y summer was not fun. In addition to being sick for pretty much all of it, my corgi puppy, named Twinkie, had to undergo heart surgery.

It all started back in July when we brought Twinkie to the vet for a little scrape on her foot.

Although we were told the scrape was nothing, we were also told she had a heart murmur (which was news to us).

After getting a second opinion, it was confi rmed.

We made an appointment with a canine cardiologist. She was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart defect that was causing too much blood to flow into the Out and left side of her heart. We were told she would need to undergo a About surgery to put in a small device to stop the blood from flowing Shannon where it shouldn’t. If she didn’t Granholm do the surgery, she would likely only live another year or two and di from f die congestive heart failure.

In addition to already paying well over $600 to see the cardiologist, we were also given estimates for the surgery that ranged from $2,500$4,500. That number was pretty hard to swallow, especially with a journalist’s salary. Since I don’t have children, my dogs are my children. So needless to say, we went forward with the surgery, which happened Aug. 22.

Thankfully, my co-worker Sara Marie Moore and her hedgehog Ginger quickly sprung into action and started a GoFundMe page to help with Twinkie’s medical bills. With the recent news of the couple in Philadelphia who raised $400K for a homeless veteran through GoFundMe and never turned over the money to him, I was extremely nervous that people wouldn’t be comfortable donating.

Despite my fears, immediately donations starting pouring in from co-workers, family members, friends and complete strangers.

We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of not only the people we knew, but all the people we didn’t. In Twinkie’s short little life, she had touched a lot of lives, both in person and online through my own personal pictures on Facebook and her Instagram @frosty_and_baby_ twinkie (yes, my dogs have an Instagram).

Twinkie’s followers, many of whom live in other states and countries, not only donated to her GoFundMe, but also mailed cards, sent her a handmade blanket and new toys. One corgi owner set up a raffle to raise money for the cause.

A 12-year-old girl even went as far as dedicating her birthday to Twinkie. Instead of asking for presents, she asked for donations for Twinkie, whom she had only met once.

Because of Twinkie’s connections, a nonprofit organization called Bandit’s Bandaid got wind of Twinkie’s story and agreed to be with us every step of the way, both financially and for support.

Thanks to all of the support from friends and strangers alike, my husband and I were able to focus on Twinkie and what is most important— getting her back to her normal, spunky self and giving her the long, healthy life she deserves.

Not having to worry about the fi nancial side of things was such a relief during an already stressful time.

From the bottom of my heart, and Twinkie’s fi xed heart, I want to thank every person who sent prayers and felt this was a worthy cause to contribute to.

Twinkie is now free to run laps around the house (what we call the Corgi 500), run up and down the stairs over and over again and play with her sister Frosty and all of her corgi friends.

From sunburned to burned out

he school year has begun and summer break is officially over. For many, getting back into a routine and setting goals for the coming months feels like a healthy next step after a restorative summer of sun, fun and vacation.

But if we’re not careful, we can easily go from sunburned to burned-out in a matter of weeks.

We live in a culture that often valMovers and ues busyness over and excess Shakers rest, over restraint.

Jerry Hromatka How often have we caught ourselves boasting about how productive we can be on just a few hours of sleep, or sheepishly admitting that we “wasted” a weekend doing absolutely nothing? Research shows that ignoring our need for rest and relaxation not only harms ourselves, but the people around us as well.

Our children not only watch how we deal with stress, they learn from our example. According to the American Psychological Association, teens are becoming as stressed out as the adults in their lives. And during the school year, they sometimes report even higher levels of stress than their parents.

At Northeast Youth & Family Services (NYFS), we see youth coming to us for help dealing with stress at younger and younger

ages. The pressure to do it all: get good grades, take advanced classes, participate in a sport or extra-curricular activity and get a job can overwhelm a youth who is already doing the hard work of navigating adolescence.

NYFS Outpatient Mental Health Director Rachel Cain says that while stress is a natural part of life, it shouldn’t be viewed as an insurmountable problem.

Stress is the net effect of mustering the resources necessary to respond to stressors in our lives.

The skills we learn and fortitude we gain when we respond to stressors is necessary for personal, academic and professional growth. It becomes a problem when we lack the resources to effectively manage stress or when we are under too much stress for too long.

She adds that parents need to regularly check in with themselves, and with their children, to determine what is a manageable level of stress and what is too much. Cain says to be aware that younger children might not have the words to fully express their feelings – but their bodies often tell the tale for them. Kids who are prone to stomach aches before school, lose their appetite frequently or have trouble sleeping may be exhibiting signs of too much stress in their life.

Some stress from things like job loss or a long illness, cannot be avoided. But it can be lessened through intentional self-care such as setting a fi rm time each day to stop working, going to bed at a reasonable hour, eating healthy meals and scheduling time for fun with family and friends. Physical exercise, meditation and massage can also help.

Cain adds that we have more control over stressors than we realize. Canceling a volunteer commitment or dropping a class will not cause an organization to fail, or keep a student from succeeding in life. Recognizing and addressing stress is not a failure, but a recognition that our minds and bodies need consistent care if we are to perform at our best.

In the long term, rest and moderation are much more productive than burnout. Life is a marathon, not a sprint; we need to be at our best for the long haul. So now that summer is over and we may not have as many easy opportunities for rest and relaxation, take a few minutes to consider how you can build in some intentional downtime for yourself or loved ones.

Anoka County Extension Master Gardener Program turns 35

I

n 1983 Aaron Rodgers was born, Ronald Reagan was president, Microsoft Word was ďŹ rst released, a Ford Mustang cost $6,994 and, with the growing trend in creating beautiful landscapes, the Anoka County Master Gardener (ACMG) program was organized. With a handful of eager volunteers, the Yard and Garden Line was implemented to address the hundreds of calls that came in weekly during the busy growing season.

When the State Master Gardener program was ďŹ rst developed in 1977, the mission was to provide trained and enthusiastic volunteers willing to help University of Minnesota Extension Agents in answering consumer horticulture questions.

With such good results, the Anoka County Extension program continues to be one of the most recognized and visible programs in the state.

Today, the ACMG program continues to ourish with over 100 volunteers who are charged with educating youth and adults through a variety of programs and services. Connecting researchbased horticulture resources from University of Minnesota, ACMG is addressing issues in our environment that are important for the health and well-being of our communities.

Each spring the ACMG program hosts the Home Landscaping Garden Fair, which is a public event

providing 17 classes and workshops for adults. Throughout the summer on Wednesday evenings, the “Walk in the Garden� program offers six informal classes held in the beautiful Veteran’s Gardener’s Memorial and Peace Garden in Andover.

Grapevine The Plant and Insect Diagnostic clinic runs Lynne Hagen Wednesday evenings, June through August, where people can meet with Master Gardeners face-to-face and learn how to manage their plant diseases or insects and get their tree or turf questions answered, bringing photos or samples. Master Gardeners also provide gardening advice at local community events, farmers markets and on the state Answer Line, or on the Ask an Expert online site.

Many ACMG volunteers teach classes and camps for youth in partnership with schools or the local 4-H program. One of the ACMG schoolyard garden programs was featured as a model program statewide and nationally in 2018. Master Gardeners also provide support for local outreach organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Great River Greening.

The Forest Lake Masons will host a Fall Family Fun Day from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Masonic Lodge, 119 Eighth Ave. SE. In addition to a pancake breakfast (with a drive-through option), there will be a coat drive for Coats for Kids (monetary donations encouraged), and a free electronics recycling event (hosted by the Boy Scouts).

Shriner clowns, fire trucks and police cars will also be in attendance. Families will also be able to get their children a free Kids ID.

The Anoka County Library will host its third annual Local Author Fair Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Northtown Library, 711 County Highway 10 Frontage Road, Blaine. Activities will start at 10:15 a.m. with keynote speaker Sarah Stonich. Internationally acclaimed Stonich is the author of the novels “Vacationland,� “These Granite Islands,� and “Laurentian Divide.�

Following Stonich’s appearance, the public can connect with around 24 local authors whose books represent

Drowning on Lake Peltier Around 6:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, law enforcement and rescue personnel were called to Peltier Lake in Lino Lakes regarding a boater in distress. It was reported that the operator and lone occupant of a boat had been observed falling from the boat into the water and did not resurface.

Members of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Lino Lakes Police Department, Centennial Lakes Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, White Bear Lake Fire Department Dive Team and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit responded to the scene.

At approximately 11 p.m. the boat operator was located submerged and deceased underwater. The victim is identified as Rodney Pierre Callendar Sr., 64, of St. Paul. The Lino Lakes Police Department and the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the incident.

Cougars triumph over Elk River The Centennial swim and dive team beat Elk River 102-80 on Sept. 20 moving to a 1-2 conference dual meet record. The Cougars swept the 200 medley relay placing first (Madeline Fuller, Sarah Harville, Janessa Sandvold, Katelyn Smith), second (Hailie Finke, Macy Wang, Grace Wiege, Devon Brandt) and third (Calla Kamish, Alison Harville, Lauren Kajer, Kimberly Hareland). In the 200 free, Centennial placed first (Sarah Poellinger), fifth (Nicole Kammer) and sixth (Kaylie Knight). The Cougars continued to dominate the Elks in the 200 IM placing first (Macy Wang), second (Katelyn Smith) and third (Wiege). Centennial volleyball has a 4-7 record after losing to North St. Paul and Anoka, each 3-0, last week.

Their wins have come against Park Center, Bloomington Kennedy, Apple Valley and Coon Rapids. “This team is capable of winning matches like this,” coach Jackie Rehbein-Manthey said after losing to Anoka 25-21, 2522, 25-16. “We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot.”

On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Cougars won 8th place with 218 team points competing against 15 teams at the Maroon and Gold Invite at the University of Minnesota. Top eight finishes include Gabi Parkinson winning 1m diving with a first place. Sarah Poellinger placed 8th in the 100 butterfly. Sarah Harville took 6th place in the 100 breast. The team of Macy Wang, Fuller, Smith and Brandt took 8th in the 400 free relay.

The Cougars next compete against Blaine on Thursday, Sept. 27 at home.

Gridders lose back-and-forth battle to STMA 20-15

Centennial had the lead twice in a duel with St. Michael-Albertville (STMA) but fell short 2015 on Friday evening on the Knights field.

The Cougars scored first, on quarterback Connor Zulk’s two-yard run and a kick by Ricky Eason, in the first quarter.

Down 14-7 in the fourth quarter, the Cougars went to the air to grab the lead 15-14 with four minutes left. Zulk passed to Yaachie Chuol for a 47-yard touchdown and to Jake McCortney for the

two-pointer.

The Cougars then gambled with an onside kick, but STMA recovered.

With the short field, plus a 15-yard pass interference penalty, the Knights regained the lead on Desean Phillips’ seven-yard run with 1:18 left. Their two-point conversion was stopped.

Phillips, who’s rushed for 566 yards in four games, was limited to 88 yards in 24 carries by the Cougars. “They did a good job of containing him,” Knight coach Jared Essler said about the Cougars.

pass from Jared Duda to Rhoeshon Dillard to pull even 7-7 in the second quarter. Phillips put them ahead 14-7 in the third with a 1-yard touchdown.

Gavin Wermager added extra point kicks. Duda was 7-for-15 for 138 yards.

Zulk completed 10 of 20 passes for 97 yards with one interception, and kept the ball 21 times for 75 yards. Noah Larson completed a halfback pass to Ricky Eason for 35 yards.

Eason caught four for 55 yards.

The Cougars will host Osseo (0-4) next Friday, Sept. 28.

Cougar girl kickers blank SLP and Coon Rapids

Centennial boys soccer moved into the rankings at No. 10 on Sept. 17 and had another good week, defeating Spring Lake Park (SLP) 5-1 and Coon Rapids 4-0. The Cougars are 9-1 with six straight wins. In the Northwest Suburban Conference, the top three are Totino-Grace 7-0, Centennial 7-1 and Maple Grove 6-1. Demetrius Bernardy-Nelson pumped in three goals in each match, giving him 20 for the season. Chalee Moua notched a goal and two assists, and Matt Hove the other goal, against SLP. Max Percy had the other goal against Coon Rapids.

Centennial girls soccer cruised twice last week against Spring Lake Park (SLP) 4-0 and Coon Rapids 11-0.

The Cougars are 7-3. Khyah Harper notched two goals against SLP, and Olivia Lovick and Olivia Tregilgas had one each. In the rout of Coon Rapids, Brianna Bordson knocked in three goals, Harper and Mallory Monson two each and Lauren Ahles, Sydney Kubes, Tatum Trettel and Aria Burgess one each.

Centennial graduate Ryner Gorowsky will be a co-captain of the Bentley University hockey team in Massachusetts this season.

The 5-9, 180-pound junior forward from Lino Lakes was named captain Ryner Goworsky along with senior defenseman Tanner Jago (Brandon, Manitoba), announced coach Ryan Soderquist.

Gorowsky has tallied 12 goals and 26 assists in 59 career games, and is one of the team’s top penalty killers, Bentley was 13-18-7 last year. As a freshman, he was named to the Atlantic Hockey Conference all-rookie team.

A 2014 graduate of CHS, Goworsky played juniors for two years with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, where he was assistant captain on an NAHL champion team his second year there.

‘BENEATH THE INK’: Lino Lakes director film brings many firsts FROM PAGE 1

platform that allowed him to do the narrative work he enjoyed and explore his creativity. Not having looming deadlines all the time was another perk.

In 2014, Dodson shot his fi rst documentary and “has pretty much been working on something ever since.”

Out of all his projects, Dodson said he spent the least amount of time on “Beneath the Ink.” “I think that kind of says something about the story I got.

I didn’t have to try that hard to put it together, everything was there for it,” he explained.

The idea for the fi lm came about when Dodson was headed home to work on another project and stumbled across an article on social media from his hometown paper. “The story was about Billy White and his tattoo shop covering up these tattoos.

I contacted Billy about possibly doing something with this, and he was all for it,” he said.

The synopsis is this: “As society’s belief systems are changing or even reverting in time, an Ohio artist Billy Joe White is challenging his community by saying, ‘bring me your mistakes.’

“Beneath the Ink” is a timely look at hate and racism in one Appalachian community that reveals heartfelt stories of change and redemption.”

Dodson really enjoyed the unknown aspect of the project.

“Going into it, I didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t laid out, I didn’t know who I was going to interview, I didn’t know who was going to want to be a part of it, want to be shown and tell their stories,” he recalled. “I pretty much just got to my hometown and was hoping people would be willing to talk about it ... I was just there in the right place at the right time.”

Originally, the fi lm was made from two days of shooting. Dodson was able to fi lm additional footage to improve the fi lm for its qualifying run (for the Academy Awards).

“After seeing it in theater a few times, I realized there were some parts that were not where they probably should have been because I didn’t spend the time to do it,” he explained. Not only did he get some additional footage with both Billy and one of the documentary’s participants, but he also hired a few people to help him with new music cuts and graphic design work.

Dodson likely won’t hear anything about the 2018 awards until sometime next year.

For now, Dodson says he is too busy to even think about his next project. “Maybe around this time next year I might start thinking about something,” he said.

Centennial teacher hopes to grow love of travel in students

Lisa Johnson, a social studies teacher at Centennial High School, and her family have made traveling a priority in their lives. Having already visited Australia, China, Italy, the Caribbean and many places in Europe, the family can now add another destination to the list — Tanzania.

Lisa visited Tanzania from July 31 through Aug. 14 with her husband Ted and their teenage children, Thor and Greta. They traveled with another family and a retired teacher and pastor who have traveled to Tanzania many times.

“We are pretty big travelers. We have been to a lot of places around the world ... so we jumped at the opportunity to go to Tanzania,” Lisa said. “We wanted to really experience another culture and wanted to go with people who have been there and have a connection to the community so that we weren’t just tourists.

We lived in the village. There was no running water, no kitchen; it was camping.”

They first went to Iringa, where they visited a primary school and orphanage for children ages 2-16 who come from abusive homes.

“When you are there, you are generally told not to bring money. You are supposed to ask what their needs are and then go and purchase it for them,” Lisa explained, adding their group purchased a new milking cow along with sheets, blankets, cooking oil and rice for the orphanage.

The Johnsons then headed to Magulilwa, where they visited a nondenominational secondary school for ages 12-18. The students come from a variety of religions, including Christianity, Islam and tribal religions.

At the school, the Johnsons taught lessons and kept the kids busy by doing crafts and playing games.

In addition, they donated items to the children. Ted works for the Minnesota Timberwolves and was able to bring an abundance of shirts, jerseys and basketballs.

“One thing we noticed while we were at the school was there were no posters in the whole school. So when I got back, I asked if teachers had posters in their drawers they weren’t planning on using and collected them,” Lisa explained. A gentleman who lives in Minneapolis and works at the school in Tanzania then brought the posters back with him to Africa.

The friendliness and openness of the people in Tanzania made an impression on Lisa. “They were the kindest, sweetest people. They didn’t seem to have the worries that we have (here) despite not having anything. They all seemed incredibly welcoming,”

The trip also had a lasting impact on Thor and Greta. “They especially noticed the lack of material things and how happy the kids were despite that. How differently people live around the world, what they eat, how they live, what their daily lives look like. I think they were pretty blown away by that,” she said.

Even though Tanzania is not a part of Johnson’s social studies curriculum, as she teaches U.S. history, she can often be spotted talking about her travels and sharing pictures with her students.

“I am hoping to grow a love of traveling and experiencing the rest of the world in them,” she said.

Lisa and Ted try to go on at least two trips a year.

They don’t have any specific plans for the rest of this year or next year just yet but are hoping to go to a warm destination over the winter such as Costa Rica or Belize.

Motion by Wilson, seconded by Timm to approve the two year contract for Tim Burton to be the Director of Buildings and Grounds. Vote: 5-0-0, motion carried unanimously. 7.2 Food Service Milk Bid - The school district received bids for the school lunch program for milk and related products on August 9, 2018. Three companies responded to the requests for bids. The bid tabulation is included in board packets. After review of these responses, the administrative recommendation was to accept the bid from Agropur with a basic ½ pint milk pricing from $0.159 to $0.164. Motion by Burns, seconded

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation in the 8000 block of I-35E Sept. 11. The 19-yearold driver was subsequently arrested for multiple narcotics violations.

• Officers received information regarding vehicles illegally passing on the shoulder in the area of Main Street and Wood Duck Trail Sept.

11. Extra patrol of the area was requested.

• A male came to the police station Sept. 11 inquiring about registering himself under the predatory offender registration.

• Officers received information regarding a theft report from the 6500 block of Enid Trail Sept.

12. Officers collected statements and evidence from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer spoke with a resident from the 7800 block of Knoll Drive at the police department regarding a voicemail they had received from an out-of-area phone number Sept.

12. The message appeared to be an attempted scam, and the officer assisted the resident in blocking the phone number.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E Set. 12. After further investigation, the driver was arrested for DWI. • An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1400 block of I-35E Sept. 13. An adult male was subsequently arrested for DWI, driving without a valid license endorsement for vehicle driven, speeding and fi fth-degree possession of not a small amount of marijuana.

• Officers received a call regarding a possible theft of mail in the 300 block of Carl Street Sept. 13. Extra patrol was requested.

• A motorist reported a hit-and-run property damage crash in the area of Ash Street and Hodgson Road Sept. 13. There were no injuries, and damage was minor. No suspect has been identified at this time; the investigation is ongoing.

•An officer stopped a vehicle for several moving violations in the 8300 block of I-35W Sept. 13. The adult male driver was arrested for third-

degree DWI and booked into the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers responded to a possible assault taking place at a residence in the 300 block of Ware Circle Sept.

14. After investigation, officers cited the suspect with fi fth-degree fear of bodily harm or death and the suspect was transported to the hospital.

•Officers responded to a report of nonconsensual dissemination of private images in the 1100 block of Paul Parkway NE in Blaine Sept. 14.

Officers learned the crime happened in a different city and referred the case there.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for a moving violation in the 6500 block of Pheasant Hills Drive Sept. 16. The juvenile driver and passenger were released after parents were advised of the police contact.

• Officers responded for a male shooting a BB gun at squirrels in the 1200 block of Buckthorn Lane Sept. 16. Officers located the male and advised him on city ordinance regarding BB guns within the city.

• An officer handled a bicycle theft report from a local business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Sept. 16.

The investigation is ongoing.

• A resident reported her vehicle as stolen in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Sept. 16. Officers later located the vehicle and arrested an adult male driver for motor vehicle theft and driving without a license. The male was booked into jail.

•An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E Sept. 17. The male driver was cited for a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to a phone call report of a dog bite near Crossway Drive and Center Road in Circle Pines Sept. 12. The caller reported a dog bit another dog.

Information was passed along to the community service officers for follow-up.

• Police conducted a stop of a bicycle in the 9900 block of Lexington Avenue in Lexington Sept. 12. The rider of the bike was subsequently

•Officers were dispatched to the 420 block of Woodland Road in Circle Pines Sept. 13 for an assault that had just occurred. Officers spoke with an involved party. The case is pending.

• Officers responded to a damage to property report in the 1700 block of Main Street in Centerville Sept. 13.

An unknown suspect kicked in a shed door, causing $200 in damage.

• Officers were dispatched to a theft in the 30 block of Central Street in Circle Pines Sept. 14. Police located the suspects in the area and one suspect was issued a citation.

• An adult male was arrested in the 20 block of North Road in Circle Pines Sept. 15 for DWI after he was pulled over for no seat belt and an equipment violation.

• Officers were dispatched to a

theft report called in from the 10 block of East Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines Sept. 15. Officers took information about a stolen keyboard.

There are no known suspects at this time.

• Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation near Lexington Avenue and West Road in Circle Pines Sept.

15. Officers discovered a weapon and other violations and arrested an adult male and transported him to jail.

• Officers responded to the 400 block of Keith Road in Circle Pines Sept. 16 on report of a suspicious person. An adult male was located and cited for tampering with a motor vehicle.

• Officers were dispatched to the 10 block of Circle Drive in Circle Pines Sept. 17 on report of a theft. Officers took information regarding a license plate theft.

Centerville receives levy update LEXINGTON from Centennial Schools

On Nov. 6 when Centerville residents go to the polls, they will be faced with two questions to answer from their district.

Various district officials attended the Sept. 12 meeting to brief council on the particulars and reasons the district passed a levy referendum solution and put two questions on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Question 1 pertains to operations, and Question 2 pertains to capital improvements.

Question 1 must pass in order for Question 2 to pass.

The fi rst question, pertaining to operations funding, asks for an additional $650 per pupil.

On a $225,000 home, the tax to be paid would amount to $28 per month.

Presenters at the podium said the reason the district is looking for operational

funding is that since 2003, state funding has not kept up with cost of living increases. Although the district goes out for a levy referendum every few years, it has not successfully passed an operational levy increase since 2005, Superintendent Brian Dietz said.

In addition, the district has cut $9.3 million from the budget over the past five years and $17.2 million over the past nine years. Sixty positions, including 22 teachers and 25 paraprofessionals, have been cut from the budget during the past three years.

The second question, pertaining to capital projects, asks voters' approval to sell $22,215,000 in bonds. The tax impact on a $225,000 home would amount to $5 per month.

The capital question is a bond question and concerns bricks and mortar.

that the district has in mind include an enclosure for the outdoor corridor connecting the east and west buildings at Centennial High School, because district officials think an indoor corridor would be safer for students.

The wish list also includes updating antiquated lighting and sound systems in the fine arts facilities at the high school and middle school and updating the refrigeration and rink at the hockey arena. The district would also like to replace aging technology such as SMARTBoards and LCD projectors that have seen better days and were originally bought with grants that are no longer available.

With the student population holding steady at more than 6,500 pupils, the district has no plans to build any new school buildings, Dietz said.
