Eagle Brook Church voted best place to work in Quad area BY CADEN CHRISTIANSEN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Quad Community Press readers have voted, and the results for the best place to work are in. The winner of the 2021 Readers’ Choice Best of the Press for the best place to work (more than 50 employees) in the Quad area is Eagle Brook Church in Lino Lakes. The church opened its Lino Lakes campus in 2005 and now serves more than 25,000 people during weekly services across 10 different locations.

Northern Wholesale Supply Inc. in Hugo was voted as a finalist in the category. Eagle Brook, a Baptist church led by senior pastor Jason Strand, offers a wide range of services, programs and resources for its members and the community. The Lino Lakes campus holds 4 p.m. services on Saturdays and 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services on Sundays. The church provides many opportunities for employment in a variety of different fields. For Eagle Brook Lino Lakes Worship Associate KJ Haywood, it has become a career.

Haywood attended Crossroads College in Rochester in 2013 and finished degrees in music and Christian studies at Crown College. After interning at Eagle Brook in 2015, he reconnected with worship pastor Chris Mason while working at a Twin Cities Target and began singing part-time for Eagle Brook in October 2019. Now a full-time staff member, Haywood has benefited from the support and leadership of his colleagues. SEE BEST PLACE TO WORK, PAGE 3

Community rallies together to support veteran

Centennial High School celebrates homecoming week

BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR

PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Centennial High School students and faculty members celebrated homecoming week with a variety of activities including a Friday afternoon pep fest outside at the sports stadium. A dance demonstration by the boys featured a high flying leap through the air by a team member.

Later this week, a local veteran will lace up his running shoes and attempt to do the nearly impossible — all in hopes of spurring conversations and raising awareness of veteran suicide. Forest Lake native Caleb Wedger served in the Minnesota Air National Guard for nine years. In 2012, he was deployed for six months. He spent half of his time in Kuwait and the other half in Afghanistan. Two weeks before he left for basic training, his father took his own life. About a year ago, Wedger stumbled across a video on YouTube of Gov. Walz giving a press conference about veteran suicide and the fact that on average, 100 veterans take their lives each year in Minnesota. “For whatever reason, that really grabbed my heart,” Wedger explained. At the same time, Wedger was reading a book by David Goggins called “Can’t Hurt Me,” in which Goggins shares his life story and illuminates a path that anyone can take to push past the pain, demolish fear and reach their full potential. Goggins, a veteran, runs ultramarathons for charitable causes. “That’s where 100 is TOO MANY was born, and I’ve been able to gain support and traction through local communities to pull it off,” Wedger said. The first Saturday of October is recognized as Veterans Suicide Prevention & Awareness Day in Minnesota. On Friday, Oct. 1, there will be an opening ceremony at Lakeside Memorial Park in Forest Lake. Wedger will begin his run north
