Creative couple publishes books, creates mural

Circle Pines couple Mark and Peggy Sandmann, together for 40 years, have written and independently published two books over the past three months.

The children’s books are written from the perspective of two stuffed teddy bears the couple own.

Teddy was the first bear they owned.

Peggy brought the bear back from South Dakota, where she attended a handbell convention. The bear has a red shirt with a hand bell on it.

The other bear, Oso, was purchased at the Seville airport in Spain while the couple visited their exchange student.

Oso means “bear” in Spanish.

The first book, “Teddy and Oso Christmas Stories,” was published June 27. It’s available on Amazon.

The book was a result of a Christmas present idea for the couple’s grandchildren.

“I woke up one morning and I was thinking about Christmas gifts for our grandchildren,” Peggy said. “So, I thought, ‘We make up stories about Teddy; why don’t we just write a story about Teddy and Oso?’” The process started in 2017. Peggy wrote the story in a day. Then, Mark did the illustrations.

Volleyball, football get belated fall seasons in MSHSL reversal Football and volleyball players and coaches got the news they were hoping for last week when their fall seasons were reinstated.

“We were hearing rumors about having a season for a few weeks, so I was not surprised,” said Mike Diggins, Centennial Cougars football coach. “Of

course I’m eager to get going.”

Reversing a decision in early August to move football and volleyball to a spring season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) directors voted Sept. 21 for an October/December season for each.

The MSHSL also decreed that there would be no state tournaments in any fall sport.

The other fall sports have been operating since late August with shorter schedules and other pandemic restrictions.

The schedule will include six football games and 14 volleyball games, plus an abbreviated section playoff. The directors voted 15-3 for fall football and 14-4 for fall volleyball.

85% of community newspaper readers ‘very likely’ to vote Newspaper readers are voters, and the annual readership survey of more than 1,000 people from rural and urban communities across the country once again validated that point.

The survey — conducted annually by Susquehanna Polling and Research of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — found that 85% of community newspaper readers said they are “very likely” to vote in elections in 2020. Further, respondents rated community newspapers as the most trusted source of information about candidates running for public office.

On a scale of 1 to 10, respondents rated how much they trusted a source’s information when it came to learning about candidates for public office. (A score of “1” means you don’t trust them at all, while 10 means you trust them a lot.)

Community newspapers rated an average of 5.77 — 6.23 among

readers — topping all mediums National network TV news — 5.13 Cable TV news shows — 4.60 Talk radio or satellite radio programs — 4.31 Metropolitan newspapers that cover major cities and suburbs — 4.29 Direct mailings from candidates or political parties — 3.73 Facebook or Twitter — 2.92 When it comes to seeking out information about candidates for public office at the federal, state or local level, 68% of respondents turn to national network TV news “very or somewhat often,” closely followed by community newspapers (61%) and cable TV news programs (58%). Less than half of the respondents seek out direct mailings from candidates or political parties (42%), talk radio or satellite radio news programs (38%), metropolitan newspapers that cover major

cities and suburbs (33%) and Facebook or Twitter (29%) for information.

“Overall, great news for local community newspapers,” said National Newspaper Association (NNA) Vice President Matt Adelman, publisher of the Douglas (Wyoming) Budget. “(The results) show Facebook and even direct mail have far less impact and readership than the political consultants insist, especially on the trustworthy

scale where our newspapers rank about even with national news programs, but far ahead of the rest of the pack.”

The survey also found community newspapers are the leading source for shopping decisions and advertising content.

For instance, 79% of respondents agree community newspapers “provide valuable local shopping and advertising information.” Further, 24% of

respondents rate community newspapers as their go-to source for local purchasing decisions, beating out all other mediums.

Traditionally held before the assessment hearing (set for Oct. 13), residents are invited to attend a neighborhood open house to learn more about the project, ask questions and share their concerns.

• Set the preliminary levy for 2021 in the amount of $2,783,675, which represents a decrease of $489,903 from 2020. Here are some highlights for the proposed 2021 budget, to be finalized in December. ° The total budget is $3,028,414, up from the 2020 budget of $2,957,697; it represents a 2.4% increase in expenditures. ° The tax rate will decrease (by 2.65%) from 52.64 to 49.99. For taxes payable 2021, homeowners will see a decrease in their tax rate if the value of their home did not increase. For example, A $200,000 home in Circle Pines that remained at the $200,000 value for 2020 taxes will see a decrease in city taxes of almost $4 a month. ° The general fund levy will increase by 2.8%. The main portion of the revenue increase is driven by personnel costs associated with settled union contracts and health insurance increases.

The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its Sept. 22 meeting: • Announced that City Council meetings will be held via teleconference for all of October and perhaps November because of the ongoing City Hall renovation project.

• Shared that residents only have until Sept. 30 to respond to the 2020 Census. However, there is a pending court case that could push that back to Oct. 31. Council Member Dean Goldberg said the city’s response rate was 87.7% as of Sept. 22. “The census is really important in maximizing the amount of funds we get from public resources that are not related to our taxes,” he said.

“If we fall short of 5,000 (in population), that means we stand a chance to lose the $150,000 we get a year to maintain the seven state aid roads in our city … Get out there and help us.”

• Heard from Council Member Matt Percy, who shared that his wife and son voted early and it was a “great experience.” Council Member Steve McChesney said as of Sept. 22, the city had seen around 100 people vote early. “A lot of people are skeptical about mailing in ballots. I encourage people if they requested a ballot, to fill it out and drop it off here (City Hall). The county will pick it up,” he said.

• Reported fall cleanup day was a success. City Administrator Patrick Antonen said that more than 300 cars participated, about 100 more than usual.

Instead of paying fees during the event, the fees will be attached to residents’ utility bills. Antonen said that may be a permanent change going forward. Mayor Dave Bartholomay reminded residents that leaf pickup will be Oct. 24 and Nov. 7.

• Provided an update on the 2020 street project. Antonen said the final lift of asphalt will happen in the next couple of weeks, which is two to three weeks ahead of schedule compared to projects in previous years.

• Announced that the Centennial Lakes Police Department and the Centennial Fire District will not participate in Night to Unite, which was rescheduled from August to October. Antonen said residents can still

Inside the newsroom

M

uch of 2020 has been interesting to say the least for most industries, but that is especially true in the newspaper business.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I was worried there would be nothing to fi ll our papers each week. Schools were closed down, sports were not happening, events and city festivals were canceled, churches were not offering services and new businesses were not opening.

In the newsroom, we had to shift our mindset and start thinking Out & about other stories we About could offer our readers.

We had to fi nd a balance Shannon between too much COVID-19 news and Granholm not enough. We didn’t want to pretend that we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic, but we also wanted our products to offer an escape from the traditional news you hear and read about every day.

Throughout the pandemic, we have shared many positive stories about drive-by parades, community members making masks, organizations and individuals giving back to their communities and ways businesses are adapting to serve customers. We have also had to be the bearer of bad news when it comes to deaths, businesses closing down and events being canceled.

Almost all of our interviews in the newsroom are now done by phone, our meetings via Zoom and city meetings are watched online. About half of our time is spent working in the newsroom and the other half at home.

I really miss running into people out and about, taking photos at city festivals and events and sitting down to do in-person interviews with people in their homes or at coffee shops and restaurants.

For the past several months, I have had no problem fi nding stories that need to be told. The one thing I am struggling with is fi nding photo opportunities. A lot of the photos we take usually come from events, most of which are not happening, and within the schools, many of which have no visitor policies right now. Do you have any photo ideas? Keep in mind although we love nature photography, we also love to have people in our photos.

ccording to Minnesota Department of Health statistics, suicide rates, have steadily increased by 53% for the past two decades. Experts say that this may be the result of the challenges people face when accessing mental health support.

Stigma against mental illness and shortages of available health providers can make it tough for Minnesotans to Movers & get the help they need when the Shakers causes of suicide in. These same Noelle Rivard set experts say that by recognizing the warning signs and working through the challenges that lead up to these deaths, all Minnesotans can have a role in lowering the rates suicide.

and show that a person may be considering suicide as an option.

One sign is to talk about feeling trapped, feeling alone, or that someone feels they are weighing others down. Other warning signs are irritability, changing sleep patterns — both not sleeping or sleeping too much — and using more alcohol or drugs. If these signs are seen in friends, family members, or in the workplace, experts say that it is important to directly ask the person if they are planning to kill themselves.

It’s now a well-known myth that asking these questions will cause a person to take their life.

Instead, asking these questions can save lives. If a person talks about wanting to die, not having a reason to live, or is looking for a way to kill themselves, get immediate help from law enforcement or other emergency personnel without hesitation.

Understanding common situations that trigger thoughts of suicide can also lead to better understanding the signs of suicide. Scientists know that stress can trigger the brain to think that the best option to handle difficult situations and feelings is to end one’s life. Decreasing stress may help control these thoughts by doing activities such as short walks down a quiet country road, in the pasture, or in the town park. Another activity is taking a “brain break,” a

break that is 5-10-minutes long and can be done throughout the day to relax and recharge. A third activity is getting involved in community groups, like doing activities at church or having game nights with family and friends. A final activity is to simply talk with a friend or family member. Though these activities may feel awkward and new to do, they have been proven to help a person feel in control of their life again. This is a feeling that experts say can help prevent suicide.

Suicide is a preventable action.

Learning about the warning signs of suicide and preventive activities is just a start to doing something about Minnesota’s rising suicide rates. If someone is experiencing thoughts of suicide, call CRISIS (274747), the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Dial 1-800-273-8255), or 911 to get support right away.

Lino Lakes, Blaine in top 3 healthiest housing markets A study by the New York financial technology company SmartAsset ranked the healthiest housing markets in the state of Minnesota, and the cities of Lino Lakes and Blaine made the top three.

Lino Lakes came in at number two and Blaine at number three. White Bear Lake also came in the top 10, at number nine. A healthy housing market is both stable and affordable. Homeowners in a healthy market should easily be able to sell their homes with a low risk of losing money over the long run.

In order to find the healthiest housing markets in the country, the study considered the following four factors: stability, affordability, fluidity and risk of loss.

PAID LETTER Fredrick will help close achievement gaps Minnesota’s education disparities are a crisis, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis report released in October

of 2019. Due to the large disparities across race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, Minnesota is one of the worst states in the country for education achievement gaps. We need someone in the state legislature that will be a voice for addressing these achievement gaps.

Kris Fredrick is a proven advocate for public education.

He has chosen to have his own children attend public schools in the Centennial School District and has volunteered in the district in several capacities. He helps with the band and music program. He has also served two terms as the president of the Blue Heron Elementary PTO, and has been a member of the district’s Systems Accountability Committee.

Probably most telling is that Kris left a 21-year legal career to share his technology knowledge and experience with staff and students through his new role as a Technology Specialist with Highview Middle School, in the Mounds View District.

As our state representative, Kris will work on behalf of Minnesotans to ensure that schools have the resources needed to meet the needs of all students. He will work to improve accessibility to school psychologists and counselors and support our teachers in addressing the mental health needs of their students. And, he will work to ensure that a college education is affordable for Minnesota’s students and expand access to job training and apprenticeship programs.

My 27-year-long career as a licensed school nurse and my graduate education as a social worker led me to ask Kris Fredrick, candidate for District 38A state representative, about his plans to address education issues.

Veteran senior quintet leads Cougars to 8 straight tennis wins

Led by five seniors who’ve been teammates since sixth grade, the Centennial Cougars tennis team has an 8-1 record in the Northwest Suburban Conference with two dates remaining.

The Cougars, coached by Arnie Lamers, lost their opener to unbeaten Maple Grove 6-1, but have cruised to eight straight victories since then. They posted 7-0 wins over Coon Rapids, Anoka, Spring Lake Park and Armstrong; 6-1 wins over Blaine, Totino-Grace and Andover; and 5-2 over Champlin Park.

Senior captains are Quinn Bliss, who has a 7-2 record, mostly at No. 2 singles, and Kaitlyn Davis, who has a 9-1 record with fellow senior Claire Peloquin at No. 1 doubles.

The other seniors are Natalie Ennett, who’s 8-1, mostly at No. 1 singles and Britta Arends, who’s 8-1 at No. 3 singles.

Four of the five have been teammates since sixth grade.

Peloquin joined them in eighth grade. They have trained year-round for years at either Lifetime or The Pit. Davis is sure that one of her greatest memories of high school will be her four years with this group of seniors.

“We have grown close by practicing year round, and have become great friends off the court as well. It is hard to believe this is our last season together,” Davis said.

“COVID-19 has made it much different than prior seasons, but we have found ways to make the best out of the situation alongside our teammates. I am fortunate

to have spent my last season playing first doubles with Claire, who I look at not only as my doubles partner, but one of my best friends.”

Bliss remembers that it was “pretty intimidating” when she joined the Centennial team as a seventh-grader, watching all the older students play, but she “found comfort” with Natalie, Kaitlyn, Britta and Claire sharing the experience.

“It was always a good time with them. It's been fun watching us develop as players and becoming a dominant force on the courts. We all committed to playing in the off season to become even better.”

Her top memory so far is the Cougars advancing to sectionals last year and getting to play at the University of

Minnesota’s Baseline Courts.

“Tennis has been a huge part of my life,” she said, “and I have made lifelong friends that will last beyond the tennis season. I am thankful for my teammates and coaches that have supported me all these years.”

Ainsley Greve, a junior, is 8-0 at No. 4 singles. She didn’t play against Maple Grove, where Davis and Peloquin got the Cougars lone win.

The other doubles regulars are juniors Kate Kastner, junior Megan Goodreau and Hailey Helvig, and sophomore Anna Jarpy, with sophomore Anya Sudgen as the top backup.

The Cougars are closing their conference schedule this week against Rogers on Monday and Osseo on Thursday.

About the task at hand, Diggins said, “We have to change practices around to get kids in shape and football-ready. Kids have been off for six weeks and have lost the conditioning they have gained in summer.”

Centennial girls win, boys lose in CC at Anoka Centennial girls cross country won a dual meet at Anoka 20-47 on Thursday. Anoka’s Kaelyn Nelson placed first in 19:18 and Centennial had the next seven runners, led by Abby Wood in 20:44.

Following were Lauren Swenson, Emma Magnuson, Tatum Liebke and Gracie Stoks. The Anoka boys beat the Cougars 21-41. Anoka’s Nicholas Becker won in 17:19. Christopher, 16, is a very thoughtful outgoing, personable boy. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys making people laugh. He is incredibly loyal to his family and close friends. Christopher is very loving and can be an absolute sweetheart. He can be very respectful towards people he believes deserve respect. Christopher needs time to build trust with others, but once trust is built he is very honest and protective. He loves playing basketball and generally any other physical activity though he has not had as much opportunity to be active lately. He enjoys being outside, likes to take walks and explore and likes to go fishing. He is a great dancer and likes rap and hip-hop music and knows a lot of hip-hop dances and loves to show others how to do the moves.

Natalie Ennett has an 8-1 record, including 6-1 at No. 1 singles, for the Centennial tennis team, leading a lineup that’s won eight of nine matches. The left-handed 6-foot-2 senior was also at 1-singles on last year’s team that went 16-5. She has played varsity singles since 9th grade, making all-conference the last two seasons. Ennett also earned allconference honors in golf in grades 8-9-10 (no season last spring) and is a consistent straight-A student.

For each sport, practices began Monday, Sept. 28. The Cougar volleyball season opener will be Thursday, Oct. 8, at Elk River. The football opener will be Friday, Oct. 9, at home against Champlin Park.

Jackie Rehbein-Manthey, volleyball coach, said she was surprised by the starting date because it doesn’t give them much time to plan and make arrangements.

She filled a coaching vacancy on the same day as the announcement.

“Original information that was floating around was an Oct. 12 start date, so any high school players that were playing in a fall club season could complete their commitment,” she said.

The coaching staff, she said, will be sure to encounter “hiccups” as they navigate the new normal.

“But we are happy we get to play this fall. We are still ironing out the details for games but we do know fans will not be able to attend as we are an indoor sport.”

The MSHSL’s reversal came on the heels of the Big Ten announcing Sept. 16 that they will start football the weekend of Oct. 23-24 rather than have the spring season they designated earlier. Lino Lakes awards 8 bids for City Hall project The Lino Lakes City Council approved a resolution awarding eight bids for the 2020 City Hall renovation project at its special council meeting Monday, Sept. 21. The council previously approved a construction

management services agreement Aug. 31 with H+U Construction for the project.

Caregivers play vital roles in the lives of the people they look after. That’s especially true for people caring for dementia patients, many of whom require round-the-clock help every day.

A caregiver’s role is never easy, but the demands have been even greater during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite social distancing guidelines and recommendations to reduce interactions with those vulnerable to COVID-19, including the elderly, dementia caregivers must continue to help patients in need.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that older adults are at the highest risk of severe illness from COVID-19. That puts dementia caregivers in difficult positions, as data from the World Health Organization

Until recently, private funds or long-term care insurance have been the only ways to ďŹ nance long-term care like skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities or home health aides, which are not covered by traditional health insurance. However, a new option is now available. According to the online ďŹ nancial resource NerdWallet, for those concerned about the ďŹ nancial risk of buying long-term care insurance and never using it, combination long-term care/ life insurance policies may be better options. Depending on the policy, a portion of the funds can be used for long-term care that’s equal to several times the premium payments. This results in a reduced death beneďŹ t, depending on how much of the long-term care beneďŹ t was used. Some policies even guarantee a small percentage of the death beneďŹ t, even if all the money allocated for longterm care was used. The American Association of Long-Term Care Insurance said that more than 350,000 Americans purchased long-term care coverage in 2018 and roughly 84 percent of these purchases were for hybrid or combination life insurance. A much smaller percentage were traditional long-term care policies, showing the trend toward this growing insurance market. Hybrid products may have lower premiums, and they can be paid in a lump sum or over several years. For those who do not tap into the long-term care savings, the policy will still pay out a death beneďŹ t to beneďŹ ciaries.

Mark and Peggy are creative in other ways, too. Over the past three years, the couple has had different artists paint parts of their garage door.

Mark said they decided to have other people contribute because he is “not good enough to paint the whole thing,” although Mark painted three of the squares.

Altogether, eight different people created art on the couple’s garage door.

Brianna Mayhew, one of the artists, thought it was a fun idea. “I love putting art in places (where) people can see it,” she said. Mayhew brought her family along to help paint the garage door since everyone in her family is artistic. Mark and Peggy grilled hot dogs and burgers while the Mayhews painted.

Throughout the process, the couple held four or five “painting parties” for the artists.

There is, however, still one empty spot on the garage door. Mark said he might fill it with a painting of Teddy and Oso.

“As you go through it, you can tell I got better with the later ones,” Mark said.

All in all, the first story of the Christmas stories took about three weeks to complete.

In March of this year, the couple wrote the “interview” part of the book, about what the bears like to do over Christmas vacation.

The second book, “Teddy and Oso Go to the Mountains,” was published July 7.

It is also available on Amazon.

The second book involved about six months of work, Mark said. For this book, both Peggy and Mark did the illustrations.

The couple got the idea for the book from a weeklong trip they had taken with their grandson and a separate trip with their granddaughter.

When their grandchildren turn 8 years old, Mark and Peggy plan to take them on a weeklong trip, just like the one in “Teddy and Oso Go to the Mountains.”

The couple has been selected as one of the featured authors for the Anoka County Library’s Read Local program.

Their books will be highlighted during one week in October, November or December.
