LINO LAKES — People representing careers ranging from hair stylist and fraud investigator to pharmacist and police officer gathered at City Hall Monday night last week. About 15 minutes after they filed into council chambers, the 30-plus men and women filed out again, all now sharing a new job title — that of Lino Lakes firefighter. The paid-on-call firefighters and cross-trained Lino Lakes police officers took their oath of public service en masse, with family and friends packing into the chamber to lend their support. More than one cry of,
“Daddy!” could be heard from small children in the audience as they watched the new fire division of the city’s Public Safety Department came together. “I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work [of our staff] that has brought us to this moment,” said Public Safety Director John Swenson. “I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the family and friends here tonight. It’s the love and support that you give our fire safety professionals that enables them to serve us.” “I think it’s a great service to the community ... I’m very proud of him,” said Betsy Werpy, wife of three months to firefighter Jonas Werpy, who performs project work for Wells Fargo.
Jonas served previously on the Stillwater Fire Department, but that was prior to meeting Betsy and moving to Lino Lakes. “When we met, his sister told me all of his heroic stories,” Betsy added. “He pulled people out of the river — he’s a trained diver.” “Don’t put that in the story,” said an embarrassed Jonas. He spent six years with the Stillwater Fire Department and said he leaped at the opportunity to get involved with the fire service again when he heard Lino Lakes was hiring. As he was already certified from his experience with Stillwater, Werpy has been taking part in mainly refresher training,

LINO LAKES — Whichever way you cut it, it wasn’t the most auspicious of evenings for engineering firm WSB & Associates. In a special session held after the regular council meeting on Monday, Sept. 28, Lino Lakes City Council learned that WSB & Associates had: · Provided a lack of oversight to the contractor for the city’s 2015 mill and overlay project, which resulted in a 330-foot section of street in the city of Hugo being paved as part of the Lino Lakes street project; • Underestimated the quantity of materials needed for the renovation of the Lino Lakes city streets in the West Oaks, Otter Bay and Otter Lake Hills neighborhoods. It will now cost an additional $175,000 to complete the project this year. “What we came up with was, it was a bust in our original quantities; the mistake is on us,” said Brian Bourassa, principal/ senior project manager

Four are inducted into Centennial School’s Hall of Fame What is better for a homecoming than to celebrate alumni and those who have contributed to making their community a better place to live? That’s exactly what took place on Sept. 25 at Lino Lake’s Chomonix Golf Course during homecoming festivities when four individuals became the newest additions to Centennial School District’s Hall of Fame. Centennial Schools representative Krista Bergert says those inducted represent former students and citizens whose professional accomplishments and their contributions have made life more rewarding for others. Brian Dietz, superintendent of Centennial Schools, said, “Today we recognize Centennial alumni and individuals who have made a significant impact on Centennial Schools. Our recipients demonstrate outstanding professional accomplishments and have a longstanding history of service to the district.” Rosann Lorenz, currently of White Bear Lake, was honored for her 16 years of distinguished service to Centennial Schools by heading the Centennial Dance

the group. In 1983, Lorenz and the dance team accompanied Centennial’s High School Band to Hawaii, where they placed first in parade competition.
Tom Kaluza, Circle Pines, taught fourth grade for 35 years from 1963-1998 at Centennial.
