Little Free Libraries around town BY JOLENE FRID CONTRIBUTING WRITER

When Susan McMullan saw them on the news over a year ago, she told her husband she only wanted one thing for Christmas that year: A Little Free Library to put in their front yard. A creative writing teacher at Rice Lake Elementary school in Lino Lakes, McMullan loved the idea of a Little Free Library in the community to promote literacy and reading for all ages. Once the Little Free Library was built out of old paint and shingles left over from the McMullan home, children from the neighborhood began visiting often. “I thought it was cool because not that many kids get this,” said Will Sullivan, a young neighbor. He noted that he appreciates being able to take extra time choosing books because there’s no “rush.” He and his brother, Max Sullivan,

Manna Walk raises funds for Manna Market BY JOLENE FRID CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Many people in the community gathered with more than nine local churches to hold the second annual Manna Walk event Oct. 4. The Manna Walk is a local fundraiser for Manna Market, a community market that provides food free of charge to local people in

need. The Centennial Ministerial Association, a local collaboration of pastors, developed the event as a way to not only raise funds for the Manna Market, but to get the community involved and spread awareness of hunger in the community. The Manna Walk began at Golden Lake Park in Circle Pines at 1 p.m. Afterward, events for participants and supporters included a hog roast for

donors, a live bluegrass band, a blessing of the animals and drawings for prizes. “Manna Market is run by the community, for the community,” said Pastor James Chapman of Sonlight Church of the Nazarene. The market operates out of Sonlight Church, and over 90 percent of Manna Market’s volunteers are past market customers.

Prison ministry volunteer bids farewell BY MICHAEL KASSNER SPECIAL TO THE PRESS

Do grown men cry? “Sure they do.” That’s how Les Trombley’s farewell letter addressed to the inmates at the Lino Lakes Correctional Facility began. The same inmates that he and the other members of the St. Joseph of the Lakes prison ministry have served for the past eight years. Diane Kiffmeyer, St. Joseph parishioner and prison ministry team member, steeled herself and continued reading the letter: “I want to express how grateful I am to all for sharing part of the knowledge of life — your life — with me. You are now KAYLEE SEIDENKRANZ

part of my extended earthly family and will be cherished forever.” The inmates know about the cancer consuming Les, but are still hoping and praying that Les will pull through. However, it seems God has other plans. “You know this cancer has been the only travel ticket I’ve received totally free of taxes, buybacks and restrictions,” wrote Les. “All I have to do is use it wisely. Some day you too will receive your travel ticket — use it wisely.” Bob Peterson, who, with Les, started the prison ministry program said that kind of loyalty and caring is what it’s all about. Bob explained, “Ask anyone on the team, they will tell you story af-
