CIRCLE PINES — Matthew's Family Restaurant in Circle Pines abruptly closed its doors after more than two decades in business. There was a sign posted on the door last week that read, “After 23 years of proudly serving this community, we are being forced to close. These are not our wishes.” The note was signed, “Kindest thoughts and sweetest memories, Love Amy and Matt.”

Rumors have been circulating social media since the closing. Some of the rumors allege criminal activity.

Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) Chief James Coan said, “I can tell you that our department has no criminal investigation going on concerning the restaurant or the owners, nor have we been contacted by any other law enforcement agency regarding any investigation.

Having said that, I suppose that anything is possible, as we wouldn’t necessarily hear from a federal agency.” Coan noted that extra patrol has been requested in the area.

Centennial School District in need of tutors to make an impact

The Centennial School District needs more people like Lindsay Bass.

Bass, a resident of Blaine, is a Reading Corps tutor at Blue Heron Elementary School.

Minnesota Reading Corps and Math Corps are statewide initiatives to help every Minnesota student become a successful reader by the end of third grade, and proficient in math by the end of eighth grade.

“In Minnesota about one in three third graders isn’t reading at proficiency for grade level. Our program is one of the data-driven, evidence-based programs that puts people in schools that directly target these kiddos in one-on-one meetings, where they might not always receive services because they are not the low enough kids to get all the extra attention,” said Program Manager Chris Erickson.

“Statewide, we partner with hundreds of schools and try to meet the communities’ needs where they

are. We really work with those kids based on what they need and not necessarily where their grade level says they should be.”

Centennial still needs 13 tutors (11 reading and two math) for the 2019-2020 school year.

Bass, who is originally from North Dakota, moved to Minnesota with her husband in 2016. After working in the retail industry for over 15 years, she was looking for a change. “I was really looking to feel like I was doing something good out in the community,” she said. “I stumbled across the perfect opportunity, being able to give back, work with kids and make a direct impact.”

She stumbled across the tutor position while she was online job searching. This is her first year working as a tutor. She works 35 hours a week as a tutor and still works part time in retail.

Snowmobile certification class Officers with the Lino Lakes Public

Safety Department will conduct a DNR Youth Snowmobile Certification class in December.

The class is for youth ages 11-15 (certification becomes valid at age 12). This training class is an introductory class designed for the snowmobile rider with little or no experience in snowmobile operation.

The class includes one introductory classroom session from 6 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department, 640 Town Center Pkwy, Lino Lakes, and requires some online training at home. During this class, the instructors will distribute materials, discuss the course outline and answer related questions.

Parents are encouraged to attend. The course also has an online component.

The riding test will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 21, on Centerville Lake.

This date is tentative based upon snow and ice conditions and can be rescheduled if necessary.

Students learn more than music through youth symphony

If you walk through the halls of Highland Park Middle School on a Saturday morning, you will hear orchestral melodies soar, then clash. Step into a cafeteria or auditorium, and you will see the student orchestras of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies (MYS) rehearse for their fall concert.

Here, expectations are high. The pace is quick.

Feedback is shouted as students play. Notes are written as they are given.

A few measures can be rehearsed for 10 minutes until the exact sound the conductor seeks is produced.

Conductor Claudette Laureano knows the program’s rigor, and how tough she is on her students. But, she said, “I try and make them understand that through commitment, you grow.”

‘Resurrected’ music program

Claudette and her husband, Manny, have expected great commitment from students since they became the artistic directors of MYS in 1988.

At that time, the program had only 65 students and risked ending entirely.

As Manny put it, he was offered the directorship to “resurrect” the program. He accepted on the condition that his wife join him, as in 1982 she had created a successful string program at the Breck School in Golden Valley.

Together, the couple changed policies, recruited students and soon saw exponential growth: from 120 to 300 students in only a few years.

Today, MYS is considered one of the country’s premier youth orchestras.

In addition to Saturday morning rehearsals, students K-12 present three formal concerts a year along with community concerts and a winter fundraiser concert. An audition is required. If they are accepted, students are placed in one of five orchestras of varying skill levels. Program activities are hosted in the Twin Cities, but students from other cities and even Wisconsin have participated.

MYS will hold the first of three formal concerts at 2 p.m.

Orchestra, this means more than playing pieces like “The Rite of Spring” or the “Firebird Suite” at a professionally aesthetic level.

It might mean wearing a Darth Vader costume while conducting the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars,” or the Duke of Wellington’s costume while leading Beethoven’s “Wellington’s Victory.” It might also mean writing a narrative to be performed by an actor in between songs from the opera “Carmen.”

Ultimately, Claudette’s goals are to engage the audience, tell a story and make the concertgoing memories last a lifetime.

She said that students from 15 to 20 years ago still remember her schtick — and still keep in touch.

What it takes

of the biggest takeaways students gain from MYS, and testimonies like this affirm this belief.

Manny said that even if students do not pursue music after MYS, they “will take away the discipline that it takes to become whatever it is (they) want to be.”

Yet for MYS alum Jacob Rose, the program played such an immense role in his passion for music that he now cannot imagine a career without it.

Rose was advised that music requires an undivided commitment. For the students who did not fully commit to MYS like he did, “I always felt bad for them,” he said, “because they didn’t get what I got out of it.”

What he did get from MYS was a career path he did not initially imagine, encouragement to grow

and succeed musically and personally, and the realization of his full potential as a musician. The former Lino Lakes resident now studies trumpet performance at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Meanwhile, Rose also encountered the challenges that are inherent in the study of music, especially in an advanced program like MYS. So did Noah Loushin, who plays cello in the Repertory Orchestra. The Shoreview resident even considered quitting the program. But with his mom’s encouragement he remained, and learned he had greater musical capacity than he thought.

Said Noah’s sister Ella, who plays violin in the same orchestra: “I’ve learned to push myself even if something is hard (…) you’ll get there and

A 10,000-cast fish

ver MEA weekend, my friend Jesse invited me, my son, and a few high school friends and their kids to his cabin on Lake Vermillion for one last fishing trip and to close it up for the season. In the past, we have tried our hands at a muskie tournament, and walleye and trout fishing. The fishing was slow. We met up with a fishing guide, Casey, who took us out. We landed a handful of small fish and were thankful for the filets in the freezer so we could have Mike’s signature fish fry.

Nothing is better than trolling with a muskie rod and good conversation. We trolled for a few hours when Jesse had a hit. After landing a muskie, we ended up cutting the net tangled with the 10-inch lure. Jesse wanted to limit the time the fish was out of the water. A quick photo and it was back in. We didn’t even measure the fish. Over the years, we have been told it’s better not to weigh them unless you use a proper scale. The goal is the health of the fish Publisher’s and to limit its time out of the water. If I were to guess, it was 43 to 45 inches. According to View some different online charts, the fish would weigh in around 23 to 29 pounds. What made Carter Johnson it special is that last year Jesse set me up with the same lure and I pulled in my first muskie after years of trying. A new state catch and release record was set this past summer for a muskie, which also happened on Lake Vermillion. It measured 57 ¼ inches and weighed in at 47 pounds.

As we made our way back to the cabin for dinner, we sent a couple of photos to the kids who stayed behind to play football.

Playing on the deck made it more challenging. If someone missed a catch the football rolled off the deck and ended up down the bank and on or near the water. The boys said they spent more time on the trails to the lake than actually playing football.

Throughout the days the boys fished from the dock, had campfires, played ghost in the graveyard and did things boys do — some of them more stupid than others. The weekend was a success and the boys were returned home safe with a few scrapes. As we closed up the cabin for the weekend, the dads noticed how all the extra hands made light work of moving the deck furniture. It was pretty neat to see the boys come together and help us expedite the cabin-closing process. As with any fishing trip, we left the cabin with memories and a slight odor of smelly clothes and wet dogs, but we’re thankful for friends and another MEA weekend.

Phone and email scams As always, it’s better to be safe than sorry with email and phone scams. More and more we hear phishing scams are the new normal. One that is making the headlines again is a phishing scam via phone. A typical scam might start out like, “This is your bank, we just denied a charge in Florida.” This technique is so good because we have all had legitimate calls from our credit cards or bank accounts where we have had to turn down a charge. Since it is so believable, they ask for your account number and say they will follow up with an e-mail verification. This is the part that gives them total access to your bank account. They will now ask you for the verification code that was sent to your email inbox. What they try to do is reset your password and then you give them the verification code to reset the password to your account. As always, be skeptical of incoming calls, and don’t answer any questions or give out information. If you’re concerned, call the number on the back of your bank or credit card in question. More than 20,000 people have been victims of these scams, with millions and millions in losses.

Creeping Charlie—to pull or not to pull?

’ve changed my opinion about Creeping Charlie a few times.

Initially, I thought it was a plant to be despised. I tried raking it out, hand pulling it, and God forbid, spraying it with herbicide. But even chemical warfare didn’t set it back. It seemed unstoppable.

As the years passed, my attention turned to biodiversity and the need to plant for pollinators.

When I noticed that bees visited Movers & its tiny, early spring, purple Shakers flowers, I decided that maybe Dawn Pape Creeping Charlie was a beneficial plant after all. I reminded myself that weeds are unwanted plants.

If you want a plant, it’s no longer a weed. So, maybe I just needed to change my attitude toward Creeping Charlie and embrace it. (Note: Maintaining an openminded attitude toward weeds is also the easiest way to be able to claim that your gardens are weed free.)

Now, I’m back to seeing creeping Charlie as a plant to pull. Although creeping Charlie can serve as a nectar source, it uses, in my view, an

underhanded strategy to attract bee visitors called a “lucky hit” strategy. In essence, only 8% of the flowers have a large volume of nectar and the rest have almost no nectar (Southwick et al. 1981). This “lucky hit” strategy just may be the pollinators’ version of gambling.

Every once in a while, the bees will hit a “jackpot” flower that has a lot of nectar, but more often than not, the bees get very little nectar from the flowers.

According to an article by James Wolfin and Phoebe Koenig from the University of Minnesota Bee Lab, Creeping Charlie flowers produce an average of 0.3 microliters of nectar per flower. However, the amount of nectar in any one flower varies greatly—ranging from 0.06 to 2.4 microliters.

The availability of nectar also varies throughout the day. “Lucky hits” become less frequent as the day goes on, because Creeping Charlie flowers do not replenish their nectar throughout the day. Most flowers produce their nectar at night or in the early morning, so it is believed that all the “lucky hits” available in the afternoon are ones that were missed by bees earlier in the day. Again, this conjures up a gambling image in my mind; tiny bees rummaging through the trash looking at used

scratch-off lottery tickets to see if any were missed.

Since there are a lot of other flowers that consistently produce high-quality nectar and pollen, I say, out with the Creeping Charlie and in with “bee lawn” mixes that include other beneficial lawn weeds, such as clover or self heal. I also strongly advocate planting other native plants, but that will be a future article.

At this point, I am more realistic about managing my Creeping Charlie. I don’t recommend herbicides. They are proven to be harmful to insects and birds—and they don’t even kill it anyhow. I know that the time to eradicate my Creeping Charlie will exceed my free time in the next decade or so. But with this wet weather and a “cultivator” rake (fourtined rake, with 4.5-inch tines and a long handle), it’s pretty easy to rake out. And it’s super satisfying to get 18 inches of runners and roots pulled up at once.

CITY BRIEF Blaine mayor receives award

SUBMITTED

Blaine Mayor Tom Ryan was presented with the prestigious Seven Seals Award at a City Council meeting Oct. 7. The Seven Seals Award is given by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that operates in all 50 states. Ryan, a veteran himself, has been a dedicated supporter of veterans, active military members and military families.

Lexington City Council, please vote no to the Lexington Lofts Norhart development.

The development will ruin the small town, single-family-home feeling that our area has. Apartment dwellers tend to be more transient and do not have the same commitment to the area as homeowners. Lexington and adjacent cities appear to have a more than adequate supply of high-density housing.

How will the development affect our area schools, fire department, police department, parks and road access?

Is this push for high-density housing coming from the Met Council? Do we, the small towns, have to bow to their demands?

Please consider these things as you make your decision.

CORRECTION

The Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) Board of Managers announced it selected Nick Tomczik as new district administrator Oct. 23. Tomczik brings nearly 20 years of professional water and natural resources management experience to the position.

Tomczik joined the watershed district in 2008 as the RCWD permit coordinator and wetland specialist. He has more than 11 years of experience building relationships and working with the district's cities, counties and other stakeholders. He has served as interim district administrator since May 2019.

The article, “Administrators displeased with Rice Creek Watershed's levy increase” contained an error. The public hearing for the district’s budget and levy will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the council chambers at Shorview City Hall.

What’s the Fascination?” features a filmed interview with Stephen Graham Jones, author of “The Gospel of Z and Zombie BakeOff.” The program will explore what is fueling our fascination with zombies—and what that fascination says about our culture. St. Genevieve's Gift Expo set Nov. 2

St. Genevieve will host its annual

gift expo from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Parish Community Center, located at 6995 Centerville Road, Centerville. The event will feature a trade/craft show and silent auction and fresh cinnamon and caramel rolls will be for sale.

Basket drawings will take place every hour and $1 off coupons will be given to the first 50 people for lunch or rolls.

Cougars rumble past Stillwater 42-14 in playoffs; Edina next GAME SUMMARY

The Centennial Cougars stampeded to a 41-14 conquest of Stillwater in their state playoff opener Friday evening, rolling up 417 yards on the ground.

The Cougars (7-2) will host Edina (5-4) in the second round of the state Class 6A tournament on Friday. Centennial lost to Edina 28-20 in the season opener.

beat them, and the adjustments they made for Zulk opened some space for Larson and Wlaschin.

For Stillwater (3-6), Casey Venske tossed touchdown passes to Nick Schlender from 45 yards and Max Richardson from 33. He completed 12 of 30 for 170 yards. Jake Day had 15 rushes for 65 yards.

Washburn halts Centennial boys 1-0 in OT at state

It’s over: Cougar players were sprawled in dejection on the turf after Washburn got the game-winner in overtime.

Each team has outstanding defense, each has an outstanding scorer. In that intriguing state tournament matchup, Minneapolis Washburn prevailed over Centennial 1-0 in overtime last Wednesday evening.

Darley Florvil, recently named Metro Player of the Year by the Star-Tribune, finally settled the issue, after 87 scoreless minutes, at Chisago Lakes High School.

Florvil tipped a ball past Cougars goalkeeper Ricky Hemric, who had left the net, and slid the ball into the open net with 2:34 left in overtime.

That was his 25th goal of the season.

“I kept running around, and put myself in good position,” said Florvil in the thick accent of his native Haiti. “I saw the goalie cheating, the goalie came out, and I finally got one in.” Previously he had one header and a couple other chances.

Meanwhile, Demetrius Bernardy-Nelson, who had the same number of goals, 25, for Centennial, got few if any chances to score against the swarming Millers, who have allowed just 11 goals in 20 matches.

Had Centennial been able to fi nd the net in regulation, it would have been their 13th shutout.

“Yup, pretty disappointing,” said coach Jeff Ottosen, grimly. Commenting on the

defenses, he said neither side could get much going.

“We had only three or four (chances) in the game.” That included one open shot the went just wide just before halftime.

In the fi rst half, neither Florvil or any other Miller got anywhere near the net with the ball, but they stepped up pressure on Hemric in the second half. The goalie tipped away a couple of shots.

The Millers had two shots hit the post and another sail just over the cross bar.

Centennial finished 17-3 with a fi rst-round loss at state for the second straight season. Washburn advanced with a 16-3-1 record to the semifinals against top-seed Edina.

New study finds rapid decline among common and threatened birds

It’s tough to make it as a bird in the modern world—even tougher than scientists previously thought.

According to a study released in September, the bird population of the U.S. and Canada has declined 30% since 1970.

The study was published in the journal Science and was conducted by researchers at seven different research organizations in the U.S. and Canada.

Although many bird species have known to be particularly vulnerable to the pressures of their environment, this study shows that even common species such as robins, blue jays blackbirds have declined. Overall, there are 2.9 million fewer birds in the sky than

The loss of grassland habitat to agriculture and development is likely a large component, according to the researchers.

Boreal forest birds, which can be found in the remote northern regions of Minnesota, have declined by 33%.

These include iconic Minnesota Northwoods species such as Canada jays, white-throated sparrows and dark-eyed juncos.

Pesticides also likely play a role in the decline. Another recent study showed that the neonicotinoids used in agriculture make it difficult for birds to gain enough bodyweight for migration.

Scientists compared their results to radar records, which show bird populations during migration. The population decline they observed corresponded

with radar observations, showing a decline of 14% of the bird population since 2007.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology quoted one of the study’s authors, biostatistician Adam Smith of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“It’s really a wake-up call for the importance of moving beyond just a single species, endangered species conservation framework,” he said. “We rescued the trumpeter swan and the peregrine falcon, and we should be proud and happy about those successes. But we’re at a stage where, given these extreme declines in so many species, we need to move beyond that framework.”

However, despite the worrisome findings of rapid decline, the study also found that some bird species are thriving. Conservation efforts likely paved the way for waterfowl and upland game birds such as wild turkey.

Raptor conservation programs, initiated after the birds were nearly decimated by the pesticide DDT in the 1960s, have helped to increase their populations by 200%.

The study was completed with the assistance of thousands of citizen-science observations from amateur birdwatchers,

compiled over decades.

This data included results from the long record of Christmas Bird Counts, which take place in local communities around Minnesota and all of North America every winter.

Though the numbers for most bird species seem grim, research leader Kenneth Roseburg told the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that there’s still room for hope to recover the declining species, but similar conservation action is needed quickly.

“I don’t think any of these really major declines are hopeless at this point,” he said. “But that may not be true 10 years from now.”

a stipend every two weeks and can earn up to an additional $2,321 for student loans or tuition, which can be gifted to a family member if the tutor is 55 or older.

As a tutor, Bass enjoys building relationships with her students.

“Getting to see the kids every day has been really fun. I love the supportive atmosphere ... There is such a strong support system in place that I really feel like you can’t fail in this position.

There is so much communication, good support and training, and coming from retail, that’s very important for me,” she said.

Tutors are required to complete four full days of training. Tutors also receive ongoing training throughout the year and have access to coaches when needed. One thing that surprised Bass about the position is that tutors do not need to have a background in education.

“It doesn’t matter where you are at in your life, they give you what you need to know,” she said. “If anyone is considering it, it is such a worthwhile opportunity. I really consider myself lucky to have stumbled across this opportunity while I was looking for a different career path, because the fulfillment I get every day is so much more than I could have imagined it would be.”

Erickson said, “We have folks from 18 to 80 and everywhere in between.”

Looking at felonies from the eyes of the incarcerated Parole 8,148 13%

A felony conviction can affect the rest of your life.

After serving their time, many people with felony convictions on their record have a hard time reestablishing their lives — driving, finding a job and a place to stay, and paying off court fees. Several ex-offenders discussed the difficulties of leaving their felony drug-related records behind at a criminal justice reform forum held at the Ramsey County Library – Shoreview this month.

“When you are trying to reestablish a life out here, you have all these things chipping away at you,” said Marlin Meszaro, reentry coordinator at FreedomWorks, a nonprofit that helps ex-offenders reenter life after prison. Meszaro was formerly incarcerated himself; he said he doesn’t look like someone who has 13 felonies on his record.

Even now, he is still working to get his driver’s license back. He became involved in drugs at a young age and has been through long-term recovery. He now fights to give a voice to the formerly addicted.

“We could probably be trusted to cast a ballot,” he explained. Meszaro is a board member on the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition, which advocates to the Legislature for fee reduction, shorter felony probation periods and voting restoration for those who have finished serving their time.

“There are so many things working against you when you are involved in the criminal justice system,” added Gina Evans, a past president of the coalition and community outreach director at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge.

Evans, of Mounds View, said she became involved in drugs at age 15 and landed in prison at age 21. She said she was traumatized by incarceration. When she later went to the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge recovery program, she was finally able to break her addiction. “I didn’t need restoration; I needed healing,” she remembered. “I just wish someone would have looked at me (at age 21) and realized I was at a place where I could be taught a new normal.”

“You can’t prison away an addiction,” Meszaro noted, who also attended Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge.

Tonja Honsey, founder of We Rise Leadership Collective, which advocates for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, said her 25-year spiral in and out of jail and prison began at age 12 when she was a foster child. She said children shouldn’t have sell drugs to survive because they have no safe family with food.

“I see how we can build better communities rather than building better prisons,” Honsey said. Many women that end up in prison have been abused and turned to drugs to cope. When women and their children are separated, it adds to the cycle of problems.

Many women see going back to their abuser or selling drugs as their only option to get their children back because they have to find a place to live within a year.

That often isn’t enough time when you are trying to get your license back and find a job, she noted.

“In football, it is illegal to pile on a downed player after a tackle,” said Shoreview resident Christopher Uggen, a University of Minnesota sociology professor, who also spoke at the forum. One of the topics of

There were about 63,000 Minnesotans in the criminal justice system in 2016, according to data presented by Christopher Uggen, University of Minnesota sociology professor, at a criminal justice reform forum in Shoreview this month.

“There are so many things working against you when you are involved in the criminal justice system.”

Gina Evans Community Outreach Director at Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge conversation nationally about criminal justice reform is the creation of young adult courts. It is well known that if you can keep juveniles out of the adult system that their criminal history is more of a speed bump than a record, he noted. However, the brain continues to develop until the mid-20s and treating young adults differently could help.

Raj Sethuraju, associate professor at the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Education Center at Metropolitan State University, said that investing money in the community before it’s invested in the criminal justice system could also help keep people out of the system. Root causes of chemical dependency and mental health need to be addressed, he added.

The forum was hosted by Rep. Kelly Moller, District 42A, who serves on the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Committee. She said she cares about reforming the system she has worked in for so long as a prosecutor with Hennepin County.

Moller represents the state and victims of felony-level appeals but has also become interested in the other side of the story. Among the 50 states, Minnesota has the 13th-highest rate of persons under correctional control. Correctional control includes those who are incarcerated as well as those on probation and parole.

The committee attempted to push a restore the vote initiative this last session, but political partisanship got in the way, said Rep. Carlos Mariani, committee chair from District 65B. Medtronic was named an Outstanding Disability Employer by the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation this month. Through Rise, people with disabilities have served Medtronic as office specialists, component assemblers, shipping, receiving and warehouse clerks, equipment sterilizers and mini-truck delivery staff. Nominated by Rise, Medtronic was named an Outstanding Disability Employer by the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation, MOHR, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.

“We applaud organizations in Minnesota that employ individuals with disabilities,” said Julie Johnson, president of MOHR. “They are pillars of the community who recognize the value of this largely untapped workforce.” MOHR represents more than 100 disability service providers across the state.

In providing community-based services to individuals with disabilities, Rise has partnered with Medtronic for almost 40 years, said Nancy Hoff, senior sales and marketing representative with the nonprofit. Individuals from Rise have served Medtronic as office specialists, component assemblers, shipping, receiving and warehouse clerks, equipment sterilizers and mini-truck delivery staff.

“Medtronic counts on Rise workers and considers us as a ‘preferred labor resource,’” said Hoff. The Fortune 500 company also sends contract work to production locations operated by Rise.

Its teams build material return kits, collate and assemble training kits and assemble mailings.

To help individuals with disabilities to be successful, Rise offers a number of services in connection with the work for Medtronic. Vocational evaluations, career planning, job placement and follow-up support are among them.

These individuals go through the same on-the-job training as other hires at the company, Hoff explains. Some receive a follow-up support to assist with training, acclimation and transition periods.

Janice Grendahl is supported by Rise at Medtronic, where she’s worked for more than 30 years in different departments. “I am never bored and have loved my work, no matter where they ask me to work on what my job duties are,” she said. “I have learned a lot and know they like my work.”

Hoff said the interest in, and support from people at all levels in the company for the people from Rise is phenomenal.

“It’s also genuine,” she added. One manufacturing operations supervisor told Hoff that individuals from Rise are the most enjoyable, hardworking people to work with, and their teamwork and common vision helps to produce “uncommon results.”

Rise has had three Medtronic executives serve on its board of directors during the nonprofit’s 40-year relationship with the company. Sheila Minske, Medtronic director of global supply chain strategy and innovation, currently serves on the Rise board.

And, the Medtronic Foundation has supported Rise projects and special events since 1978.

Leaders from Rise were presented the Outstanding Disability Employer Award at the Celebrate Rise Gala event on Oct. 21.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to a business in the 2300 block of Main Street Oct. 15 on report of a theft. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer was dispatched to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 600 block of Main Street Oct. 16. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals for care and both vehicles were towed from the scene. One of the drivers was cited for failure to drive with due care and speeding.

• A resident in the 6300 block of Red Hawk Trail reported someone damaged their boat cover Oct. 16. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to the 2200 block of Clearwater Creek Court Oct. 16 on a report of suspicious activity by juveniles. Officers located a party with juveniles and

spoke to the adults in charge to address the issue.

• Officers responded to reports of juveniles ringing doorbells in the 6500 block of Lacasse Drive Oct. 16.

Officers located several juveniles out after curfew.

They were cited and sent home.

• An officer performed a traffic stop in the 2200 block of Clearwater Creek Court Oct. 17 and found three juveniles violating curfew.

The juveniles were cited for curfew and their parents were notified.

• An officer responded to a report of a gas line that was severed by a construction crew in the 2100 block of 64th Street Oct. 18. Xcel Energy responded to stop the leak and fi x the line.

• Officers responded to a call of possible drug use at a business in the 6500 block of Ware Road Oct. 18. A female was subsequently arrested

for possession of a controlled substance.

•Officers responded to a driving complaint in the area of I-35E and Main Street Oct. 18. After investigation, the driver of one of the involved vehicles was issued a citation for disorderly conduct and careless driving.

• Officers responded to a delayed report of an accident involving a motor vehicle and person in the area of Heather Court and Apollo Drive Oct. 19. Officers located the victim at the hospital and spoke with the driver of the vehicle, who was found to not be impaired. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a possible overdose of a male inside a vehicle at a business in the 7500 block of Lake Drive Oct. 20. Officers found the male to be impaired and he was arrested.

• An officer responded to a report of a possible intoxicated driver in the 7500 block of Lake Drive Oct. 21. The officer located the vehicle and stopped it for various moving violations.

The driver was arrested for fourth-degree DWI, refusal to submit a chemical test, failing to signal for a turn and failure to drive in a single lane.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Police were dispatched to the 7000 block of Progress Road in Centerville Oct. 16 on report of a stolen vehicle.

• On Oct. 16, a male from Centerville was requested to surrender his gun to the police department. The gun was brought to Bill's Gun Shop.

• Police were dispatched to Lexington Oct. 19 on report of a domestic assault. Upon

arrival, police learned that a juvenile male had assaulted a juvenile female. The male had fled the area prior to police arrival and a pickup/ hold was entered for the male suspect.

• Officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of 20th Avenue in Centerville Oct. 20 on report of a stolen vehicle.

• Officers were dispatched to the 9100 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington Oct. 21 on report of a theft.

The vehicle was entered as stolen and the case is active pending leads.

• Officers were dispatched to the 9300 block of Griggs Avenue in Lexington Oct. 22 on report of a structure fi re. The fi re was put out, but the home was determined to be unfit for humans to live in due to the damage. The cause of the fi re is under investigation.

Explorers take home first

Members of the Lino Lakes Explorers competed at the Duluth Law Enforcement Exploring Conference Oct. 18-19 at Fond Du Lac Community College. Lino Exploreres competed against other law enforcement explorer teams throughout the state in the categories of: hostage negotiation, traffic stops, crime scene search, arreast and search, domestic crisis, street decisions, traffic crashes and first aid. The Lino Explorers team took home first place in the first aid category.
