Quad area resident Brandy Fulton wanted to join the military after graduating from high school because she thought it would be a great opportunity to pursue her education and travel. Her 20-year military career shaped her as a person and inspired her to continue serving.

“I am very patriotic and I have a lot of love for our country, our flag, the people who served,” she said. “I get teared up any time “The Star Spangled Banner” gets played. It is a good remembrance of all the people who died for our country and what it stands for, and I really hold that dear.”

Brandy, 59, is originally from Pennsylvania, but lived in Circle Pines for 12 years before she moved to Lino Lakes in 2001. After a female recruiter from the Air Force visited her school, she knew that was the branch she wanted to be in. Brandy joined the Air Force on Dec. 7, 1979, and was on active duty for eight years. She started off her career as a dental assistant/hygienist working in a dental clinic.

Empowering adults to help teens ‘Change to Chill’

The percentage of ninth grade students who reported that they had mental health concerns lasting six months or more increased from 12.5% in 2013 to 17.3% in 2016 and 23.1% in 2019. The percentage of 11th graders who said they seriously considered suicide in the past year increased from 9.7% in 2013 to 12% in 2016 and 13.3% in 2019.

Allina Health is trying to make an impact on those numbers, compiled from the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) administered by the Minnesota Department of Education every three years.

“We want to raise awareness of this resource that has been created and is free for use to our

community,” said Kaitlin Codner, nurse educator with Allina Health.

“We want to help build resiliency and coping skills and help them start thinking of ways to have those conversations with teens.”

Allina Health recently hosted two Change to Chill training sessions for the north metro, one on Oct. 25 at White Bear Lake City Hall and another on Oct. 28 at the Centennial Library. Change to Chill, which was launched in 2014, is a free online mental well-being program that aims to help identify what stress is, what causes it and, most importantly, how to manage it. The website includes resources, lessons and activities that are tailored to teens and educators/ parents. Techniques include mindfulness, life balance, mindful movement and guided imagery.

AIR FORCE VETERAN: Continues to find service opportunities FROM PAGE 1

in Colorado Springs, Brandy met her husband, Bruce, who was stationed at NORAD Combat Operations Center near Colorado Springs. Bruce was in the Air Force from 1980-1986 in fi re/ rescue. The two married in 1982. The Fultons were stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany for three years before going to Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico.

While in Germany, Brandy was assigned to ATH, air transportable hospital, where with a 24-hour notice she could be sent anywhere. After eight years of active duty, she joined the Air Force Reserve, 934th Airlift Wing based out of Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1988. While in the Reserve, she got “called out” during Desert Storm. “Even though I was pregnant at the time, I still had to go on active duty at the Air Force base here. There were five or six of us that maintained the 934th while our counterparts went on active duty,” she recalled.

One of her most memorable experiences from her time in the military was her two-week mission trip to Honduras in 1992. “That was really rewarding,” Brandy said. “We went up into the mountains and veterinarians and doctors inoculated animals and people. We extracted over 300 teeth during that time frame and worked with a Honduran dentist.”

Brandy retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2000 but continues to fi nd ways to serve and make an impact in the military community. Now that she and Bruce are empty nesters, she said she has plenty of time on her hands to dedicate to military members and their families. She joined American Legion Post 566 and serves on the Bar and Building Committee. She is also president of the Lino Lakes Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network.

“I wanted to help veterans and their families that needed services in our area. I think it is good to give back to all those veterans that have served over the years and who are serving now,” she said.

Brandy currently works for a private practice in Roseville as a treatment and financial manager.

Bruce is retired from a 37-year career with the U.S. Postal Service.

Fifty volunteer drivers for Anoka County’s Medlink Transportation Program were honored during an Oct. 22 luncheon at the Banquets of Minnesota in Fridley.

Between Sept. 1, 2018, and Aug. 31, 2019, volunteer drivers racked up a total of 137,843 miles on 6,885 trips, driving passengers primarily to veterans’ medical facilities in Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Ramsey and Maplewood, as well as to other clinics and medical facilities. Anoka County Medlink drivers contributed 9,157 hours of service. That represents more than 380 days.

Commissioner Scott Schulte, chair of the Anoka County Board of Commissioners, lauded all the drivers for their service. “While we can

attempt to put a monetary value on the service provided by our volunteer drivers, in reality their true value is immeasurable,” he said. “This positive action means so much to the people our Medlink drivers serve.”

Several drivers were specially honored for their long years of volunteer service with the Medlink Transportation Program: Five years of service – Dianne Pederson, Mike Reider, Doris LaVoi, Jim McGrath, Lonnie LaRose, Gerald Barbour and Eugene Auge; 15 years of service – Laura Louis.

The top three drivers who logged the most hours, miles and trips over the past year were also recognized: Mike Reider, 7,076 miles, 342 hours and 234 trips; David Westphall, 7,900 miles, 430 hours and 256 trips; David Adrian, more than 13,000 miles, 700 hours and 540 trips.

REGIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Minnesota surpasses 300 road deaths Preliminary fi gures from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety show 301 people have died on Minnesota roads since Jan. 1, compared to 313 last year at this time.

The fatalities include 143 single-vehicle crashes and 155 multi-vehicle crashes. The most deaths have been alcohol-related. Extra DWI Enforcement on holidays and weekends runs Nov. 27 through Dec. 28. Drunk driving-related crashes contributed to 84 deaths on Minnesota roads in 2018.

cocaine use. The study used recent data from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The study measured use of marijuana, alcohol, vaping, pain killers and harder drugs

such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. In Minnesota, 6% of youth ages 12 to 17 and 19% of youth ages 18 to 25 use marijuana.

About 23% of youth age 12 to 20 drink alcohol; and 14% binge drink.

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its Oct. 28 meeting: • Held the fi rst reading of an ordinance enacting small wireless facility standards.

Telecommunications Attorney Mike Bradley was at the council’s Aug. 5 work session to give an overview of the next generation of wireless services (5G), which will allow wireless providers to install a large number of lowerhanging antennas connected to fiber optic cable to provide significantly higher internet speeds.

Bradley drafted a model ordinance for multiple cities in Minnesota, which will help cities comply with the new laws and prepare for the anticipated applications for the facilities. City Administrator Jeff Karlson explained that the city was told by Verizon that 5G would likely not come to Lino Lakes for another four to five years.

• Appointed Andrew Nelson to the environmental coordinator position. Current Environmental Coordinator Marty Asleson will retire at the end of November. Nelson holds a bachelor's degree in conservation biology, has more than 10 years of experience in forestry and natural resources, is a certified arborist and tree inspector and holds a pesticide applicator license.

Reinert wanted to know how involved Asleson was in the hiring process. Human Resources Manager Karissa Bartholomew explained that Asleson was present at the interviews and helped to create some information on the position for candidates. “Marty has been with us about 35 years. He knows where every blade of grass is in Lino Lakes,” Reinert said.

Nelson will start in the position by the end of November; compensation is $31.79 an hour.

• Appointed Matthew Carlson to one of the two vacant police officer positions. Nelson has seven years of experience as a police officer and will start in the position for $32.91 an hour near the end of November.

• Authorized the sale of 40 fi re pagers to three departments in southern Minnesota. Public Safety Director John Swenson explained that the pagers were purchased for $443 each in 2015. Anoka County Central Communications upgraded the fi re paging system in late 2018 and early 2019. As part of that upgrade, all fi re agencies were issued new 800 MHz fi re pagers, and the old pagers no longer work. The three agencies have agreed to pay a total of $200 per pager.

• Held the second reading of an ordinance that will rezone 502 and 510 Lilac St. from General Business (GB) to Light Industrial (LI). The applicant, SC Goldade Properties, proposes to operate a directional boring company, Direct Bore Inc. • Approved the planned unit development fi nal plan/fi nal plat and development agreement for Watermark 2nd Addition. Watermark is a 372acre master planned residential community consisting of 692 single-family lots and 172 townhome units totaling 864 housing units.

Lennar submitted a land use application for the

latest phase, which proposes 57 single-family lots and four outlots. Reinert said, “We have been working on this for a half a dozen years; it has been a long time coming. It is going to end up being a real nice development for Lino Lakes.”

• Accepted and approved a grant agreement between the city of Lino Lakes and the Metropolitan Council of Environmental Services (MCES) and approved a Certificate of Real Property. City Engineer Diane Hankee explained that the MCES grant program is for capital improvements to public municipal wastewater collection systems to reduce the amount of inflow and infi ltration to the MCES metropolitan sanitary sewer disposal system. As part of the grant program, the city must provide a Certificate of Real Property for projects located under any right of way.

The city of Lino Lakes submitted a preapplication to the MCES for grant funding for improvements to the sanitary sewer system on LaMotte Drive and LaMotte Circle. The project is complete and is eligible for a minimum allocation of $50,000 in grant funding. The program requires a 50% match. The project cost was $165,500, for which the city's 50% match will be $82,750.

• Adopted assessments in the amount of $69,205 for six properties where the owners requested connection to city utilities. Councilwoman Melissa Maher said, “The people on this list know about these assessments; they have okayed the fact that that is going to happen and they have signed a waiver to the hearing.”

• Adopted assessments (to be paid by the developer, Hokanson Construction & Development Co.) in the amount of $272,552 for Eastside Villas. The proposed residential development is a single-family, 32-lot subdivision located east of the NorthPointe development and west of I-35E. • Adopted assessments (to be paid by the developer, Lennar) in the amount of $1,055,605 for the Watermark development.

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at City Hall.

Resident voices concern about Lake Drive

LINO LAKES — A resident spoke up during open mike at the Oct. 28 City Council meeting to voice his concerns about traffic on Lake Drive.

Lois Lane resident John Humenansky said he had concerns about the rush hour traffic on the heavily traveled road.

“I am wondering if there are any future plans to address the traffic on Lake Drive?” he asked. “I live east of Lake Drive and sometimes it is really almost impossible to get out of there. The speed limit is 50 or 55 mph ... sometimes a car might leave a space for me to come out, but I can't see the oncoming traffic.”

Mayor Jeff Reinert explained that Lake Drive is a county road, so the issue would have to be assessed by Anoka County.

“This is something that has come up from time to time ... At a previous meeting we did talk about the fact that at one time it was 55 mph and it has just kind of been left alone for years as the town has been developing and there has been more traffic,” he said.

“It is something that the city should take a look at and request regardless of the county taking a look at it. That could help a lot of people.”

Humenansky suggested the city consider a future transportation improvement that would allow access to Main Street from properties east of Lake Drive. “If that was a possibility, that might alleviate that problem,” he said.

Community Development Director Michael Grochala said, “Lake Drive is experiencing a lot of backups right now, predominately because of the I-35W/35E interchange construction. We are getting a lot of cutthrough traffic. Hopefully once that project is done that will free up some things.”

Grochala added that the Pine Glen development, which was constructed in the late 2000s, included a street stub (Jane Avenue) that could be extended to James Street in the future, allowing access to Main Street. Grochala said that project would likely be done when the road needs to be reconstructed, which is still a few years out.

He noted that the project would require the city to acquire additional right-of-way.

Humenansky said that whatever the solution is, he would prefer not to see additional stoplights added to Lake Drive.

(Un)Happy 18th birthday OEF

T

here are soldiers who weren’t even born when we went to war with terrorists in Afghanistan, referred to as Operation Enduring Freedom. (OEF).

Eighteen years and trillions of dollars later, military members are still fighting America’s longest war.

By coincidence, my son left on his third deployment on OEF’s birthday, Oct. 7.

He is spending Veterans Day and the next eight months in Afghanistan.

Veterans Day Nov. 11 has special meaning for this soldier’s mom. My daughter is an Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan. Her older brother is still serving active duty, currently at Ft. Drum, New York. Both are White Bear grads. When our son was ordered to Afghanistan to command a medevac Feeling company, he left behind an understandInspired ing wife, also an Army veteran, and our 2-year-old granddaughter. He knew it was Debra Neutkens his turn to go to that wretched country and didn’t complain. He is resigned to deployment, knowing it’s part of the service and duty to country he swore to uphold.

We talked about the nine-month deployment before he left, how he felt about being away, again. He spent a ninemonth deployment in Qatar only the year before, missing his daughter’s second birthday. Let’s see, this time he’ll miss her third, plus Thanksgiving and Christmas.

He is following in the footsteps of 775,000 other Americans who’ve served at least one tour in Afghanistan since Oct. 7, 2001, when U.S. troops first arrived to battle al-Qaeda after 9-11.

This deployment isn’t as hairy as his first, when he was in the thick of things in Helmand Province. People would ask me then if I was worried? I would always answer, “yes, but it’s out of my hands.”

So far this year, the defense department reports 17 American service members have been killed in Afghanistan, the deadliest year for U.S. forces since the combat mission officially ended in December 2014. Most of the 14,000 U.S. forces there now serve in a NATO-led mission to advise and assist security forces in their fight against the Taliban and ISIS affiliates.

It is mostly Afghan soldiers that medevac units support nowadays, although the Blackhawks are on call 24/7 for any type of emergency.

“Is it scary,” I ask, “flying missions at night? ‘Sometimes,’” he replies, especially during the new moon when there is zero illumination — referred to as “red illum” — leaving the country in near total darkness. Even night vision goggles can’t cut through the blackness. He started to describe a particular mission last month flying the Hindu Kush mountain range at night, but stopped. He didn’t want to say something that would cause me angst. I know that so I let it slide. The danger isn’t lost on me.

I am proud of my children and their willingness to serve, as I am of every military member. I hope people remember that Freedom isn’t Free on Veterans Day, and the personal sacrifice made by less than 1% of our population.

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation last Friday declaring all of November as a month to honor American veterans and military families. In his Nov. 1 message, the country’s chief executive urged communities to “honor the service, sacrifices and contributions of veterans and military families for what they have done and for what they do every day to support our great nation.”

Veterans Day has another meaning for me. Nov. 11 also happens to be our son’s birthday.

We all chipped in to buy him a fancy expresso machine as a gift. To my surprise, Amazon conveniently ships to Bagram Airfield — who knew? His flight crews bemoaned the fact the group they replaced packed up their machine and took it home, so we agreed to replace it.

Providing these dedicated soldiers the perfect latte is the least we can do.

In honor of Veterans Day, I’d like to say Happy Birthday Eric. Please stay safe.

Many Medicare Advantage plans also have low or zero dollar premiums and extra benefits like dental, eyewear and

Networks & quality It’s important to pick a plan that provides coverage at your preferred doctors, clinics and hospitals. Unlike Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans can change their network from year-toyear, so it’s important to look up your doctor and confi rm they continue to be listed in the directory.

Beyond network, it’s helpful to consult the recently released Medicare Star Ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The agency rates plans’ overall performance in more than 40 areas across nine general categories.

Making the choice Picking a health plan is very personal, so try talking with someone from the health plan you’re considering. You’ll get a better idea about the organization that will be caring for you and the benefits of its plans.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Building a healthy military community The Quad Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lino Lakes Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network will host a “Building a Healthy Military Community” event from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Centennial Library. The event is for community leaders such as city representatives, school district staff, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon leaders and other veterans agencies. The objective of the event is to learn about what is happening with military support locally, on a state level and nationally and to review what has happened in Lino Lakes since the network was founded there. CHURCH BRIEFS The decline of the American church The closing of thousands of churches nationwide and a steady decrease in church attendance will be discussed at Lifetree Café at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, and at 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, Nov. 7. The program titled, “Has God Left the Building?” features filmed interviews with several experts on the American church, including Steve Hewitt, a writer for The American Church Magazine.

St. Joseph Bazaar The St. Joseph Bazaar is back! It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 9, and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Nov. 10. The event will feature more than 60 vendors with unique holiday gifts, crafts, decorations and more. This past summer, Centennial High School student Josh Washburn received a sponsorship to participate in a weeklong summer business, career and financial literacy camp, Minnesota Business Venture (MBV). Deluxe Corporation Foundation provided the sponsorship for the student to attend the program.

The program is developed and organized by BestPrep, a Minnesota nonprofit dedicated to preparing students to be college-prepared, workready and career-bound. More than 350 high school students from 100 schools attended and were selected to receive scholarships to participate at one of two MBV sessions at University of St. Thomas or St. John’s University during the month of July.

At MBV, small groups of students called “companies” spent the week developing an imaginary product or service. The students created a business plan and presented to a panel of professionals with the hopes of gaining a loan approval. While the proposals were theoretical, the ideas presented were meant to be a realistic representation of how companies run their businesses. Students in each company were mentored and guided throughout the week by professionals from local companies.

The students listened to inspiring keynote addresses, learned about money management and career opportunities and participated in mock interviews. The speakers covered a wide range of topics such as managing personal finance, experiences in entrepreneurship and building a personal brand.

Willow Caprice is a sweet and affectionate 4-year-old cat.

She loves to be active and would do best with a family who enjoys playing with a variety of toys. Willow also likes to spend time sitting up high on a perch watching the world outside. She has done well with other cats in the shelter.

Playoff thriller: Cougars make big stops, tip Edina 21-20 in OT

For Centennial, it was yet another key injury, and yet another exciting win in spite of it.

The Cougars pulled out a 21-20 overtime win over Edina at home Friday evening to advance to the third round of playoffs, getting huge defensive plays from Timothy O’Neill Jr. at the end of regulation and Mason Mix in overtime.

Centennial (8-2) got a trophy for winning its four-team quadrant in the Class 6A playoffs and will now face No. 1 ranked Wayzata (10-0) next Friday in Chanhassen.

The Cougars, decimated by injuries to defensive starters all season, lost an offensive star in the second quarter. Carter Anderson went out in a blaze of glory, hauling in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Connor Zulk, suffering a broken foot when tackled.

Previously the Cougars have nipped Champlin Park 21-20, Maple Grove 21-14 and St. MichaelAlbertville 7-0 while patching up their defense.

Up 14-0 after that touchdown, they went scoreless the rest of the way until overtime.

Edina (5-5), perched on the Cougars 15 late regulation with enough time for two more plays,

had George Sandven throw for the end zone.

Cougar senior O’Neill Jr. soared into the air with the receiver right at the pylon and came down with the ball with eight seconds left, sending the game to overtime 14-14.

“We knew we had to make that play and we made it happen,” said O’Neill, who got between the receiver and the ball after he “read his eyes” and didn’t fall for the fake.

In overtime, Cougar quarterback Zulk slashed six yards on first down, then handed off to Austin Wlaschin, who barged into the end zone from the four. Ricky Hemric’s kick made it 21-14.

“It felt amazing. I trusted the whole line. I knew they would get me three and they did their jobs and I got in,” said Wlaschin, who slipped through several blocked bodies and dragged a tackler across the goal line. His third touchdown of the year went behind Brett Sonderman and Cameron Wolf. “It was thrilling to earn that one for the boys.”

The Cougar defense stopped two runs before Sandven completed a 10-yard pass and star fullback Jonathan Bunce scored from the one on fourth down.

Edina went for two.

After two time-outs, the teams lined up with

everyone in the stadium screaming. Bunce, No. 44, got the handoff. There was a pile of bodies on the right side of the line — and the Cougars came away leaping for joy.

Bunce had run right into Mix, a sophomore linebacker making his varsity debut at linebacker, replacing Centennial’s latest injured starter, Garret Strating. He stopped Bunce a half-yard short.

“Mason had not played a down on varsity all year before tonight. He was on the sophomore team,” coach Mike Diggins said. “He had to go in for Garret, who was hurt last week. Mason was the one who stood him (Bunce) right up and stopped him from going in.”

Mix told the StarTribune that he had a clear shot at the fullback when the Cougars blitzed.

“Then it was just a group effort,” he said.

Edina coach Darrin Lamker said: “We tried to get out of here right then and we gave it to our best player all year — and they made a stop.”

Reminded that Edina won a playoff game 7-0 on the same field two years earlier by stopping Centennial from the one on the final play, Lamker nodded and grinned.

“Exactly the same,” he said. “They got stopped an inch short and we got

Diggins, asked to comment on O’Neill’s game-saving interception, said. “That was awesome — probably the play of the game.” He also cited backup quarterback Sam Pietraszewski for replacing Anderson as holder on Hemric’s allimportant XP kick and doing it flawlessly in his first hold of the season.

Centennial, which lost to Edina 28-20 in its opening game, took a 14-0 lead in the playoff rematch. Zulk scored on a five-yard run in the first quarter, the senior quarterback’s 13th rushing touchdown of the season. In the second quarter, he connected with Anderson for their eighth touchdown of the season, from the 37.

Anderson, also a basketball standout, broke a bone in his left foot when being tackled

and had to be taken to a hospital. He returned on crutches to the sideline late in the game to cheer for his teammates and ultimately join the celebration.

“It changed our game plan a ton because we thought we could do play action with him and go deep,” said Diggins.

“Once that disappeared, everything kind of got a little tighter on us.”

Zulk, asked about losing his favorite target, said the team just had to suck it up. “Carter is a great player but other guys have to step up. We’ve still got guys that can run routs and pound the ball, so you’ve just gotta fight through it and man up.”

Edina blanked the Cougars from then until the end if regulation and used a couple big plays to pull even. Sandven passed to Hamza Malim for a 43-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

In his second state meet, Pattie ran the St. Olaf College course in 16:04, improving by 29 seconds and 62 places over last year. Among runners in 10th grade or younger, he placed 13th.

“He and I had higher hopes, but he had a great season and continues to improve,” coach Neil Kruse said. “His positive attitude and tremendous work ethic will lead to even better results next season.”

A Northwest Suburban Conference team was going to be state champions this year, that was for sure.

“I’m glad somebody from the Northwest won it — but I was hoping it would be us,” said Centennial coach Ginger Flohaug after the 2019 state Class AA finals.

Instead, Maple Grove wore the gold medals with a 2-1 victory over the Cougars in the duel of very familiar rivals Thursday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Three of the final four were NWSC teams. The No. 5 seeded Crimson dealt top-seeded Champlin Park its first loss 3-0 in the semifinals, then took down No. 2 seed Centennial in the finals.

Maple Grove led 2-0 before Centennial’s Khyah Harper scored her 26th goal of the season, on a header off a corner kick from Madison Monson, with 12:44 left.

The Cougars kept furious pressure on the goal in the waning minutes but couldn’t get the equalizer.

“We had to battle them for 80 minutes,” said Crimson coach Ben LeVahn.

That was the only goal allowed by Maple Grove (18-2-1) in five section and state tournament games as they captured their school’s first state soccer title. They were runnersup to Eagan two years ago.

Centennial finished 18-3. They had won 12 straight since losing to Champlin Park in conference. This was Centennial’s seventh state trip, and second in a row reaching the finals. The Cougars were champs in 2016, their last state trip.

The Cougars reached the finals with two overtime victories both by 2-1 over Lakeville South and Rosemount.

“The team fought hard all season,” Flohaug said.

“We came up against great opponents in the state tournament, and even though we had not been in an overtime situation all season, I thought my team handled the pressure well.”

Centennial and Maple Grove battled for the 2019 state title after clashing in their section finals the previous five years, with Centennial winning the first three of those and Maple Grove the last two.

The Cougars beat Maple Grove 2-1 in conference this year but the Crimson got the one that counted most.

Until this year, Maple Grove, Centennial and Champlin Park all played in the same section.

They wound up in three different sections this year with realignment.

Maple Grove had only five shots on goal but two of them were perfectlyplaced and eluded Centennial’s peppy little goalie Jenna Lang. Kelly Kloncz, junior forward, slid one just inside the far post in the 18th minute.

“Maple Grove can take shots from all over the place,” said Molly Monson. “That’s what makes them hard to defend.”

The first regional youth deer hunting season happened in 2004 in northwestern Minnesota. Over the years, youth deer hunting season expanded to 28 deer permit areas in parts of southeastern and northwestern Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro area where deer are most abundant.

Centennial rower’s team has high finish in Boston gala

A rowing team including Skylar Dahl, Centennial junior, placed 10th of 85 entrants in the sport’s biggest event, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, on Oct. 20.

Twin Cities Youth Rowing (TCYR) made a big jump from 35th place last year to 10th this year in the Women’s Youth Fours category.

In its 55th year, the Head of the Charles is the largest two-day rowing event in the world, with about nine thousand athletes in 55 races. The race is a three-mile course on the Charles River from Boston University to Northeastern University.

Dahl’s role is the Stroke position, responsible for following direction from the coxswain in setting the stroke rate. Her teammates are Claire Willett (coxswain), Elsa Bixby, Eliza Price and Jillian Oncay. Their coach is Rebecca Newman.

Last year’s encouraging 35thplace finish made them realize that they could do much better, maybe even top ten, said 16-year-old Dahl.

“We set about committing our full attention to training, which included weight lifting, rowing on indoor rowing machines during the winter, and rowing hard on the water during the spring and summer months,” she said.

With the Edina-based TCYR organization behind them and “a talented coach cheering us on,” Dahl said, the group knew they had the support they needed to crack the top 10.

“And that’s just what we did.”

Stillwater halts Cougars’ banner volley season in section semi’s

Centennial’s bid for a state tournament in volleyball was derailed

by Stillwater 3-1 in he Section 4AAA semifinals on Oct. 28. The No. 2 seeded Cougars, who had won 14 straight matches, finished 23-5.

“I am very proud of all this team accomplished this year. Five losses on the season is nothing to be sad about, but of course whenever the season ends it is going to hurt,” coach Jackie Rehbein-Manthey said.

Centennial cruised in the first set 2515 but No. 3 seeded Stillwater scored the first nine points of the second set and clobbered the Cougars 25-11.

In the third set, Centennial led 22-20 before Stillwater got the last five points to win 25-22. The Cougars hit two spikes just out-of-bounds in that stretch and the Ponies landed two just inside the line.

In the fourth set, Stillwater played with confidence and the Cougars looked a bit jittery. That score was 25-19.

The Ponies had stronger hitting around the rotation than the Cougars throughout, led by 6-2 Maddie

Whittington. Their serve-receive was sharp, giving up just two aces.

“Stillwater played very well and we were unable to find an answer,” Rehbein-Manthey said.

Sydney Petersen, Centennial junior, had 17 kills and passed the 1,000 mark for her career (see separate article).

Ashley Crowl was next with nine.

Mackenzie McDonald made 23 digs and Jadyn Clarner 28 assists.

Stillwater (16-14), which has won the section the last two years, lost in the section finals to North St. Paul.

The 2019 season was one of the best in the 18-year tenure of Rehbein-Manthey, who has 328 career wins. Their ledger included two championships and one runner-up finish in three invitational tournaments, the best they’ve ever done in tournaments.

“Unfortunately, our season ended before we were ready,” the coach said. “I was really hoping we could have extended our season a little bit more for our seniors. They have been great leaders and ambassadors for Centennial volleyball.”

High school selects ‘hilarious’ farce for fall play

Around 40 Centennial High School (CHS) students are slated to perform a play that has only been performed once before the production Nov. 6-9.

The school’s Fall Play, “Murder Crime!” was written by Twin Cities playwrights, one of whom is Edina High School Theater Director Justin Spooner.

CHS Director Eric Webster saw the play at Edina High School last year and knew it would be a great show to put on at CHS. “I saw it and knew instantly I wanted to direct it. It has only been performed once before,” he said.

The basic plot line goes like this ... Some people get invited to a mansion by a ghost, who sends them in search of missing treasure and a lot of people end up dead. “I know that doesn't sound funny on paper, but it is. Trust me,” Webster said. “The plot is really ridiculous itself. It's better to think of the show as a series of jokes and bits.

It's a hilarious farce. It has huge exaggerated characters and ridiculous cartoon-like comedy.”

Sophomore Braden Williams plays the role of Pembridge, the butler. “I am the butler who brings everyone in, and no one knows how to pronounce my name,” he said. “My entire character consists of keeping a straight face — and the tuxedo is nice.”

Williams said this kind of comedy is “rare to see.”

“It calls itself out a lot and talks to the audience.

It is not something that I have ever seen, and I hope it is something new for other people too,” he said.

This will be Williams’ first time on the stage. Last year he was in charge of lights in the play. “I think I was really waiting for a comedy (to be on stage). I understand comedy more,” he said. “I enjoy making people laugh more than I enjoy making people cry.”

In addition to his role as butler, Williams is also in charge of marketing for the play and wrote a good portion of the music.

“All of the music is very impromptu,” he said.

This will be junior Charlotte Taddeo's first time in a play as well. She decided to try out “for fun,” since she knew Webster from improv at Centennial Middle School. “I thought I was going to be on the set crew or something,” Taddeo said. “Webster said the character he imagined (for the narrator) was a lot like what I do in improv.”

Taddeo said she has really enjoyed the narrator role because it means she is on the stage for virtually the entire show. However, memorizing all of her lines has been a challenge.

She described the show as “ridiculous and stupidly funny.” She elaborated, “The humor is very cartoony, it is not very realistic.”

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • An adult female from the 300 block of Elm Street was scammed via email into purchasing several gift cards worth $500 dollars Oct. 22.

• Officers responded to a call of a theft in the 100 block of Marvy Street Oct. 23. Suspects have been identified and the incident is under investigation.

• An officer responded to a report of damage to a vehicle in the 6500 block of Pheasant Run South Oct. 23. The incident is under investigation.

• An officer performed a traffic stop for suspicious behavior in the 7500 block of Main Street Oct. 23. The driver was looking for a runaway juvenile. The juvenile walked to the traffic stop and was reunited with the driver.

• Officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 500 block of Apollo Drive Oct. 25. A fraudulent package was shipped to a local business. Officers spoke to the victim and advised them to contact their local police department.

• The Ramsey County Sheriff's Department requested assistance with a theft investigation in the 7100 block of Grey Squirrel Road Oct. 25. Officers spoke with a resident and located a stolen ATV. The Sheriff's Department was provided information to continue its investigation.

• Officers responded to a vehicle fire in the 8000 block of I-35E Oct. 25.

The fire department responded and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries.

• Officers were requested to check on a

group of juveniles jumping bikes into a pond in the 6500 block of Clearwater Creek Oct. 25. Officers investigated and determined the juveniles were safe and had adult supervision.

• While on patrol, an officer performed a traffic stop in the area of 20th Avenue and Ash Street Oct. 25. The officer investigated and arrested the driver for driving while impaired.

• Officers responded to a damage to property report in the 7700 block of Mustang Lane Oct. 26. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a report of an artillery round found in a garage in the 6800 block of Black Duck Circle Oct. 26. The Minneapolis Police Bomb Squad removed the item from the location.

• A resident reported an illegal burn in the 7800 block of Country Lane Oct. 26.

An officer spoke with the violator and informed them burning leaves was prohibited.

• A person was reportedly pouring an unknown substance into a sewer in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Oct. 26.

An officer checked the area but was unable to locate the person.

• Officers responded to a domestic situation on Apollo Drive Oct. 26.

An adult male was arrested for controlled substance DWI and an adult female was arrested for possessing a controlled substance. The investigation is ongoing.

• An officer received information about a coyote sighting in the 600 block of Aqua Lane Oct. 27. The information was passed along to the Department of Natural Resources.

• Officers responded to a call of an extinguished house fire in the 300 block of Lilac Street Oct. 27. The homeowners had left for the weekend and upon their return, found there had been a fire inside while they were away. The incident was investigated by the fire division and the Anoka County Fire Investigation Team.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 6700 block of I-35E Oct. 28 and observed drug paraphernalia in plain view. The driver was arrested on several controlled substance charges and booked into jail.

• An officer responded to a report of found property in the 500 block of Lilac Street Oct. 28. The officer took custody of several counterfeit bills, which were then sent to the U.S. Secret Service.

• An officer received a theft report from a business in the 7000 block of 21st Avenue Oct. 28. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a hit-and-run property damage accident report in the area of Lake Drive and Kelly Street Oct. 28. After further investigation, officers located the suspected driver, who was cited for speeding and failure to drive with due care.

• An officer received information regarding an indecent exposure report from the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue Oct. 28. The investigation is ongoing.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Police responded to the 7100 block of 21st Avenue in Centerville on report of a possible counterfeit bill Oct. 23.

• Officers were dispatched to Circle Pines Oct. 23 on report of an assault and criminal sexual conduct report that occurred within the city. The case was referred to the Criminal Investigations Division.

• Police responded to the city of Lexington Oct. 23 on report of a disorderly male. The male was subsequently transported to detox.

• Police were dispatched to a house fire in the 8900 block of Arona Avenue in Lexington Oct. 27. The Centennial Fire District handled the incident.

• Officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle personal injury accident in the 7000 block of Centerville Road in Centerville Oct. 28. A vehicle went through a building. There were no injuries, but there was structural damage to the building.

• An officer was dispatched to a phone call report of stolen license plates in the 9300 block of North Highway Drive in Lexington Oct. 29. Two license plates were stolen from a business.

• Officers were dispatched to a noise complaint in the 10 block of Circle Drive in Circle Pines Oct. 29. The noise complaint resulted in a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle; the driver received a citation for driving after revocation.

• Officers were dispatched to a fire in the 6900 block of Sumac Court in Centerville Oct. 29. The fire was extinguished.

One of the main goals of the training sessions is to familiarize attendees with the Change to Chill website and all it has to offer. All of the content, activities and videos are designed in partnership with high school interns. “We want it to be realistic, relevant and relatable,” Codner said. “We want those who attend our sessions to feel confident and able to use our website and program as a resource.”

Healy said she felt the training was very useful. “I hope to take the resources we got and dive in a little deeper and see what we can do here at the library,” she said. “A lot of the information we learned is useful for all of us in our everyday lives, so will be helpful at work and at home.”

Allina Health also has a Change to Chill School Partnership program, which works with schools directly to create things such as “chill weeks” and “chill zones.”

“Mental health is such a muchneeded conversation right now,” Codner explained. “Mental health is health.”
