Power of Centennial allocates four grants

At its semiannual meeting, the Power of Centennial (POC), a subcommittee of the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF,) met Oct. 30 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Circle Pines to select the cause members would fund.

Instead of selecting the top one or two causes to fund, POC agreed to fund all four options in the amount of $1,430.

“Our goal is to provide increased educational opportunities for students in our district, both inside and outside of the schools,” said CAEF President Jan Kreminski. “POC was an idea that was put into action by volunteers in 2014 to generate interest and smalldonor support in the CAEF.” POC meets twice a year to vote on where it would like its dollars to go within the community. Members meet in November and May and commit to giving $50 at each meeting. All of the dollars raised are given as grants meant to support education in the Centennial area.

The group has around 40 members.

Since POC's inception, the group has allocated approximately $12,000 (not including this year's grants).

Option 1 was for flexible seating for Katie Guthmueller's fi rst-grade classroom at Centennial Elementary (CTE) in the amount of $500.

Guthmueller said, “Flexible seating helps students focus and helps increase their academic performance.”

Desire for adventure leads to military career

“With undivided attention, I listened to the perks of the job and became interested. This was the first time I had heard or even contemplated joining the armed forces,” she said. “His presentation and a good friend also perusing the military persuaded me to look into it further.”

Xcel Energy debuts new training facility

A new headquarters just opened up for superheros in training, the only difference is that these evil stopping heroes don’t wear capes. Only flame retardant suits and hard hats allowed.

Xcel Energy held a grand opening for its new Training Town in Hugo Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Xcel operates more than 10,000 miles of pipelines and has over 400,000 customers of natural gas in Minnesota alone. This comes with a need for a training facility to further educate employees on how to handle time sensitive scenarios.

The complex was built to represent a small scale community and is for Xcel Energy’s operation employes from eight different states, as well as local responders and firefighters. Here the crew has the opportunity to simulate mock emergency gas leak drills for 42 different kinds of natural gases.

The regional emergency responders that attended the event included: the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Hugo, White Bear Lake, Forest Lake and Lino Lakes Fire Departments.

Hugo Mayor Tom Weidt, Xcel Energy Director of Gas Emergency Response Kevin Joyce, Xcel Energy Executive Vice President and Group President of Operations Kent Larson and Xcel Energy Senior Vice President of Gas Luke Litteken were all keynote speakers.

“At Xcel Energy safety is our top priority, there is no question about that,” insisted Larson.

He continued, “You have to have people who know how to use the system . . . if you had a choice between a safe pilot or a safe plane, you would take the safe pilot because they would always figure it out. In our case we want both and we have both. I have a lot of confidence in our system and our employees to respond.” “[Xcel Energy’s] focus on safely is second to none,” boasted Weidt.

Litteken stated , “The facility is really a culmination of the industry benchmarking, peer reviews and vision we have here at Xcel Energy for improving public safety, our ability to respond to emergencies and the way we operate our system.”

The attendees watched as first responders and employees suited up and played out a dangerous situation involving gases seeping into citizens’ homes. Many onlookers were surprised as to how quickly the crew stepped into action, evacuated all the homeowners and resolved the situation.

“I feel safe knowing this well trained team is around when I will need them the most,” a citizen expressed.

o you think you're special? The answer to that question — based on variables like genetic heritage, family of origin and life experiences — strongly points to the conclusion that yes, we are all indeed unique in some way.

During a recent phone conversation with my father I was reminded that my nephew Josiah, who is currently serving overseas in the Army and was quoted in an October article in “Stars and Stripes,” shares his name with an ancestor who fought at the battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War. My father, who enlisted in the Army during WWII at the age of 17 and was stationed at MacArthur’s headquarAngle of ters in Japan following the war, View expressed pride at this extended family lineage of military service.

Paul Dols I’m not exactly sure how we got on the topic, but I recall sharing with a coworker the fact about the ancestor on my mother’s side of the family tree who fought at the battle of Bunker Hill. He politely listened and then shared that his wife (who was originally from the east coast) could trace her ancestry back to the family that owned the land where the historic battle took place. Similarly, a former editor responded to a column I wrote after being inspired by “Mayflower: A Story of Community, Courage, and War” by Nathaniel Philbrick. I had read the book with heightened interest because I was curious to see if any of my ancestral connections to the pilgrims were noted. I also found the book to be fascinating because it described a much more vivid reality than the accepted mythology many of us learned in grade school — including the complex relationship the Pilgrims had with the Native Americans. According to Philbrick, the Pilgrims likely would have perished during the first winter without the assistance of Massasoit, the leader of the Wampanoag tribe. After expressing her interest in the column, the former editor shared that she also had an ancestral connection to this time in history and was a direct descendant of Massasoit. At the time I thought, wow, what a small world, while any notions of exclusivity concerning my family heritage were put into perspective.

Years before the emergence of services like ancestry.com my father conducted extensive research into our family’s history, tracing the roots back to Gundrada, the daughter of William the Conqueror. I shared this bit of trivia with a friend and he said that his family could also trace their roots back to William the Conqueror. Apparently William was prolific, because a significant segment of the population with family origins back in England are his descendants.

Searching back into family history, I suspect most of us hope to find inspirational, heroic and influential figures, but the real findings turn out to be more nuanced — and human. As a checkered example, the name of Benedict Arnold makes an appearance on a side branch of my family’s ancestor chart. Regardless of our origins, I believe that one of the most defining and unifying factors that every human being alive on the planet shares is that we are all descended from survivors, many of whom overcame significant adversity.

While we certainly face many challenges in present day life, the reality is that we probably have access to opportunities far beyond what our ancestors might even have imagined. I sometimes struggle to remain optimistic about the future, but think we still have a lot to be thankful for and believe we can gather some positive reassurance from the unique contributions and perseverance of those who came before us — from royalty to laborers and everyone in between.

t can be hard trying to tell your doctor why you feel so sick or injured. We’ve all had those trying times as a patient whether it be the clinic or the ER, trying to express to the doctor how we feel. When it comes to the illness or injury, it’s hard to discern what the physician needs to know and what they do not. It’s easy to leave out critical details.

We all know the ABCs. Here’s how some of those letters are more important than others when it comes to describing your symptoms to your doctor.

We’d like you to skip through the first part of the song and navigate your way to O. ….O, P, Q, R, S and T. These six letters can be very helpful in defining your signs and symptoms to your health care provider.

• O: Onset — What were you doing when your pain or symptom started?

• P: Provocation — What provokes it or makes it better or

• R: Radiation — Does the pain move anywhere or have other associated areas of pain?

These six letters can help walk us through what doctors will need to know when understanding symptoms. Remembering these six letters and jotting down your thoughts can be very helpful to your provider as they are assessing you.

It is also important to recognize that providers are not always speaking the same language as their patients. I recall asking a patient if he’d ever had any problems with his heart or other vessels? The patient replied, “Nope, my vessels are perfect.” It was later discovered during his exam, that he had a previous coronary artery bypass. When I questioned him about it he said, “Like, I said,

my vessels are perfect.” As providers, it is important we know as much of this information ahead of time.

Understanding cultural differences among patients is also critical. As an example when a provider asks, “Do you have a headache?” Some patients in certain cultures may answer the question “yes” if they have ever had a headache. That’s why it’s important to be very direct with some of the initial questions “Do you have a headache now?”

I also believe family members of patients can be a very helpful resource when it comes to covering events related to the pain or symptom, past history and other relevant notes. Often patients are stressed, anxious and in pain and making recalling details difficult. Having family in the room can be very help and take some of the stress off of the patient themselves.

Growing great garlic

A

s fall approaches, it’s time to clean up the garden and consider planting garlic for next year’s harvest. With a small amount of effort, you can grow great garlic right here in Anoka County that meets all your culinary needs.

Growing great garlic starts with variety selection. You can ďŹ nd many options at garden centers, in seed catalogs and at local garlic festivals. Avoid selecting garlic found in grocery stores as it is most likely a variety suited for California climates.

The garlic that performs well here is the hard neck type. A friend recommends Music (mild, rich avor) and German Extra Hardy (strong avor, great roasted). I have had good results with DeerďŹ eld Purple (mild, rich avor) and Duganski (big, bold avor).

Garlic prefers well drained soils rich in organic matter with a pH between 6-7. A soil test to determine your soil pH is available from the University of Minnesota for a $17 fee. See http://

Planting site preparation starts in September with weed removal and the addition of compost or well-rotted manure to the soil. In October, plant your garlic one to two weeks after the ďŹ rst killing frost but before the ground freezes. Separate the Gardener’s individual cloves from garlic bulb a day or Grapevine the two before you plant.

Plant the cloves in a double row 6" apart along the edge of the garden.

This makes weeding and watering easier. For multiple rows, allow 30 inches between the set of double rows.

To grow larger bulbs, plant each clove 5-6 inches apart. Watering at this point will help the cloves form roots and improve next year’s performance. As the ground freezes, add about 4 inches of winter mulch.

A mulch of straw or dry leaves helps protect the planting from the freeze/ thaw cycles of winter.

Once spring arrives, remove the mulch to allow the soil to warm.

As shoots emerge, add a high nitrogen fertilizer and return the mulch to preserve moisture and reduce weeds. Avoid fertilizing after the ďŹ rst week in May or bulb formation can be delayed. Keep the bed weed free and watered as your plants grow.

pears in mid to late June and is known as a scape. Once the scape starts to curl, remove it so the growth energy is directed into garlic bulb formation.

Scapes are delicious and are similar to a mild garlic chive. They can be used fresh (pesto is delicious) or dried for later use.

In early July it is harvest time. Once half of the leaves on the plant have turned yellow/brown, harvest by loosening the soil with a garden fork and remove the plant. Allow the bulbs to dry in a shaded, well ventilated space with the leaves still attached. Save some bulbs for next fall’s planting and enjoy the rest. Bon appÊtit!

Veterans appreciation

The recent Supreme Court confirmation was not a trial to prove guilt. It was to discover information about a man who could be on our highest court for 30 years or more, to see if he was qualified. What he was accused of was not immaturity, but sexual assault.

As far as the damaged moral principles of “our once-decent society,� one does not have to look any further than our president, the man who on tape laughs and brags about sexually assaulting women, and the so-called religious right ignoring him for their own purposes.

Applications are now being accepted for the title of Mrs. Anoka County. Mrs. Anoka County will have the honor of representing the area at the Mrs. Minnesota International pageant held in Minneapolis on March 22 and 23. If selected as Mrs. Minnesota International, she will receive a prize package and the chance to represent Minnesota at the 2019 Mrs. International Pageant on July 15 and16, in Charleston, West Virginia.

Each contestant competes in interview, evening gown and fitness wear (there is no swimsuit competition). The contestant will select a platform of her choice that she will spend the year promoting.

Sophomore rower part of foursome in huge regatta

Skylar Dahl took up competitive rowing this past spring and was so smitten that she gave up her other sports to devote six days a week to her new favorite.

The 15-year-old Centennial sophomore and her teammates enjoyed a nice payoff for their dedication when they finished in the top half of their sport’s largest event.

Dahl is the youngest member of the Twin Cities Youth Rowing Club (TCYRC) unit that placed 35th among 84 teams in their age group, Women’s Youth Fours, at the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) in Massachusetts on Saturday, Oct. 23.

Her teammates were a junior and three seniors.

The season-ending HOCR is a series of races on a 3.1 mile course along the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge. Billed as the largest two-day rowing event in the world, the HOCR typically draws around 11,000 athletes manning about 1,900 boats in 61 races, with about 100,000 spectators cheering from bridges and shorelines.

and basketball, trains Mondays through Saturdays from 4 to 6 p.m. during the school year. She is also involved in student council and peer leadership at Centennial.

“I initially learned about rowing from my neighbors here in Circle Pines, but became really interested when I visited my neighbor’s family down in South Carolina,” Dahl said.

The family was involved in high school rowing and “tossed me in a four-person rowing shell” despite her having no previous experience. But it went well.

“As I’ve come to learn about the rowing community, the girls were very

supportive and encouraging. It was at that point when I realized rowing was for me,” she said.

Dahl joined the TCYRC in June, teaming with Kelsey Viane of Edina, Elsa Bixby of Wayzata, Eva Casselius of Chesterton Academy and coxswain Henry Mans of Edina. Their coach is Rebecca Newman of the TCYRC organization.

Prior to the HOCR, the crew competed in the Head of the Mississippi in Minneapolis and the Milwaukee River Challenge.

They were eligible for the HOCR due to finishing in the top half last year, and their finish this year qualifies them again for 2019.

“We will still be good,” said David Cole, new head coach. “We’ve got talent, lots of speed and excellent goal-tending. We’re just young, so there’ll be a learning curve for a while. Obviously, we lost two Miss Hockey finalists, but we will still score.”

The Cougars will open Saturday at always-powerful Breck in Golden Valley, face-off is 3 p.m.

Gone are Gabbie Hughes and Annika Linser, now perforating the nets for Minnesota-Duluth.

Also moving on is coach Kristina King, who took a new job at 3M that preclud-

ed continuing as head coach. She also became assistant coach at University of St. Thomas.

Cole, who joined the staff last season as goalies coach, is a veteran in the high school ranks, including a stint with St. Paul United when he was head coach of a state tournament team.

The new coach expects the first line to be powerful again, now led by Maija Almich (12 goals, 16 assists last year) and Allison Pitlick (9-13). The other captain is goalie Mackenna Stoterau, who had a 95 save percentage and a 1.3 goals-against-average.

Last year was Centennial’s best season, 25-4-1, including 15-0-1 in the Northwest Suburban, two state tourney wins and a 2-1 loss to Edina in the finals.

The Cougars scrimmaged in Duluth over the weekend where they outscored Eagan and North Star and tied perennial power Hill-Murray 1-1.

Olivia Lovick pumped in 16 goals and assisted on 10 others to help the Centennial girls soccer team win the Northwest Suburban Conference championship and reach the Section 5AA finals. The junior forward was the second-leading scorer for the Cougars (14-4). In her career, she has logged 25 goals and 17 assists. As a freshman on the state championship team in 2016, she assisted on both goals in a 2-1 finals win over Rosemount and scored in a 2-1 win over Lakeville North.

Asked what she likes about rowing, Dahl said she thrives on the mental toughness, physical stamina, grit and determination it requires.

“Sometimes you’re rowing as hard as you can for 20 or 30 minutes, sometimes longer, without a break. I’ve never experienced this in any other sport and it will prepare me well for the future,” she said.

Dahl hopes to eventually row on a college team and make it a lifelong sport.

“Because rowing doesn’t impact the joints like basketball and soccer, I should be able to row for a good long time,” she said. “In fact, I have seen competitive row boats filled with women in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond!”

The longtime skate mates are making an immediate impact there, too.

Hughes has logged four goals and two assists in her first eight games, while Linser has a goal and four assists for the Bulldogs, who are 4-3-1 and ranked No. 7.

In a series against the Minnesota Gophers, Hughes had a power play goal to open the scoring and another goal in a shootout as the Bulldogs tied the Gophers 2-2, then won the shootout 2-0 to earn an extra point in the WCHA standings.

Hughes also scored against the Gophers in a 5-2 loss in the first game.

On average, there are around 140 on display; this year there were fewer, because of all of the rain, which caused many pumpkins to rot.

Ami and Jason were thinking about stopping the tradition after Brayden graduated from high school last year, but Josie wasn't having it—she said they had to continue carving until she graduates from high school in a couple years and maybe longer. While they were out picking out pumpkins, Josie suggested she might go to a nearby community college for a couple of years to keep the carving tradition alive even longer.

“People are always welcome to come,” Ami said. “People often feel like they are invading our space, but they can come and look, take pictures.”

Option 3 was for placement of science kits in the CTE library at a cost of $150. Media Center Paraprofessional Rebeca Schnapf explained that students in kindergarten through grade five could

check out kits, which would include a science book with experiments, lab log and supplies to perform experiments.

Option 4 was for teacher training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics and the newly installed makerspaces at all five elementary schools, a cost of $540. The makerspace equipment was funded through the “Fund the Need” campaign at the 2018 CAEF Gala in the spring. CTE Principal Kathy Kaiser said, “Training our teachers on STEM items would be beneficial to ensure that all students in our school are afforded an equal opportunity for STEM experiences.”

Attorney General calls for ‘distracted driving’ reforms Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson issued a report last month calling on state policymakers to enact legislation to require hands-free only cellphone use while driving, to increase the penalties for texting while driving and to require the suspension of the driver’s licenses of repeat offenders.

“We need to change the culture around distracted driving and make it not be OK for people to do this. Drunken driving, which was once largely condoned, is now stigmatized. We should apply some of the successful drunken driving reform measures to distracted driving, which has become an epidemic on the roads,” said Swanson.

Calling distracted driving an “epidemic,” Swanson was joined by police, business and labor groups, and families who lost loved ones to distracted driving. She said her fi ndings were based on an assessment of how other states have handled the issue. Swanson’s office also examined texting while driving charges in Minnesota and noted that the problem is not limited to the youngest drivers. In 2017, drivers age 16-29 represented 22 percent of drivers but 47 percent of texting while driving charges; drivers age 30-49 represented 33 percent of drivers but 42 percent of texting while driving charges.

Swanson’s office — which has handled over 15,000 driver’s license revocation cases following impaired

driving arrests in the last three years — studied the distracted driving reforms utilized in other states. Her report makes the following recommendations: Prohibit hand-held cellphones while driving. The Legislature should require hands-free cellphone use while driving. If enacted, Minnesota would be the 17th state to do this. This would improve driver safety and make it easier for police to distinguish whether a driver is making a call or texting.

Increase penalties for texting while driving. The Legislature should increase the fi ne for fi rst-time texting while driving to $175. Minnesota law currently imposes a fi ne of $50 (the same as the fi ne imposed for driving below the posted limit). The Legislature should also increase the fines for repeat offenders, using a graduated schedule like many other states (i.e., the fine for a second offense is more than the fi rst, etc.)

Suspend licenses of repeat offenders. The Legislature should require the mandatory suspension of a driver’s license for repeat texting while driving offenses. Several states already do this. For example, Maine requires the imposition of 30-, 60and 90-day suspensions for second-, third- and fourth-time offenders, respectively. Minnesota should follow suit.

Such campaigns can be modeled after successful public awareness efforts that — along with enforcement actions — have led to reduced DWI fatalities in Minnesota in the last decade. The Legislature should also modify Minnesota law to make sure the state does not lose out on federal distracted driving grants. This would include banning all cellphone use by minors while driving, placing the minimum fi ne for repeat offenders in state law, and requiring Minnesota to adopt a rule requiring distracted driving and

texting while driving to be covered on all driver’s license examinations.

Swanson notes that distracted driving results in over 3,000 deaths and 400,000 injuries annually in the U.S. In Minnesota, there are more than 50 deaths each year in proven cases of distracted driving, although the actual number of deaths and injuries is likely much higher. From 2013 to 2017, 265 people were killed in Minnesota and 1,080 suffered serious injuries in distracted driving crashes. One in five crashes resulting in death or serious injury during that period was caused by distracted driving.

Dr. Fun visits Rice Lake Elementary

LINO LAKES — Students at Rice Lake Elementary (RLE) learned science can be fun during an assembly with “Dr. Fun” Thursday, Oct. 25.

“We want to get them excited about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),” said Principal Bryan Carlson. “We want them to be excited about things and how they work.”

Dr. Fun was brought to RLE thanks to a grant that was approved at Power of Centennial (POC) meeting in May. POC, a subcommittee of the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF), meets twice each year to vote on where it would like its dollars to go within the community.

All of the dollars raised are given as grants meant to support education in the Centennial area.

POC Co-Chair and RLE parent Amy Minear suggested the assembly with Dr. Fun after her daughter took a community education class with him and loved it. “He is an incredible teacher, and the kids loved him. It was the best Community Education class she ever took. I wanted to share his love of science with the rest of the students at RLE,” she said.

Dr. Tyronne Carter (Dr. Fun) is a licensed teacher and principal, former human resources and diversity program director and self-described polymath. He has received awards for public speaking and is a Vietnam-era veteran.

Carter is an instructor with America’s Fun Science LLC, which offers hands-on science enrichment activities and STEM/STEAM programs to schools, nonprofits, libraries, preschools, community recreation centers, nursing homes/ adult care facilities, Scouting organizations and parents throughout the Twin Cities. Its goal is to make science fun.

“We were so excited to have Dr. Fun at RLE for an assembly. It was hands-on and interactive, and the kids absolutely loved it,” Carlson said.

“I think if we look at careers for our kids, our big goal is for our kids to be successful citizens in society as they get older. A big piece is problemsolving and critical thinking: those are things that, regardless of what you want to do in the world, are huge.”

State aims to increase percent of children vaccinated against fl u Slightly more Minnesota children received vaccinations for influenza in the 2017-18 flu season compared to the previous season, according to national data released recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, health offi cials remain concerned that too many children remain unvaccinated for influenza each year. That leaves children vulnerable to serious illness and even death from infl uenza and its potential complications.

CDC released the National Immunization Survey (NIS)

data this fall as part of its kick-off of the #FightFlu campaign, a partnership with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and others to protect more Americans from infl uenza this year. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has joined the effort.

According to CDC estimates from the NIS, approximately 62 percent of Minnesota children between the ages of 6 months and 17 years received vaccinations during the 2017-18 influenza season. That rate was similar to but up slightly

Half-million deer hunter season begins The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) expects half a million hunters to participate in this year's deer season, which began Nov. 3.

Hunters will have additional deer hunting opportunities because deer numbers continue to rebound across the state, according to the DNR. Many areas now have populations at or above goal levels.

Hunters should follow the three tenets of safe firearms handling: Treat each fi rearm as if it is loaded by keeping finger off the trigger; always control the muzzle of the firearm; and be sure of the target and what is beyond. Tree stand accidents are the leading cause of injury to hunters, so it’s always important they wear a safety harness and follow other safety guidelines.

The DNR requires hunters in central, northcentral and southeast Minnesota (including deer permit area 255) to have their harvested deer tested for chronic wasting disease during opening weekend.

Mandatory CWD testing also will occur in much of southeast Minnesota during the opening weekend of the 3B season, Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18. Hunters can find information about CWD testing locations and procedures at mndnr.gov/cwd.

“Protecting slightly more Minnesota children from influenza last year is good news, especially given the lack of a no-shot, nasal spray option, but we still have too many children left unprotected from this potentially serious disease,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “The flu vaccine protects those who receive it as well as those in the community who cannot be vaccinated due to medical conditions.”

Five children died from influenza or related complications during last year’s fl u season, and more than 6,400 Minnesotans of all ages were hospitalized for infl uenza.

CDC says 74 percent of the 172 pediatric deaths nationwide in 2017-18 involved unvaccinated children. Most of them did not have any underlying health conditions. Health offi cials noted that these numbers underscore how severe influenza can be and that vaccination is the best tool available to fight influenza.

“Since children can’t make the decision to get vaccinated themselves, it’s up to parents and health care providers to make it happen,” said MDH Infectious Disease Division Director Kris Ehresmann.

“Parents should ask their health care provider about influenza vaccine and providers should check the vaccination status of patients at every visit and strongly recommend vaccination.”

MDH is partnering with pediatricians to get more children vaccinated against influenza this year.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children ages 6 months and older receive the flu vaccine each year, ideally by the end of October,” said Dr. Lori DeFrance, president of the Minnesota Chapter of the Amer-

The survey’s data for Minnesota show differences in coverage between age groups.

The rate for children 6 months through 4 years (75 percent) is signifi cantly higher than the rate for children 5 through 12 years (65 percent). Coverage falls even more for adolescents 13-17 years (50 percent).

That suggests infl uenza vaccination may be related to “convenience” or how often children of different ages visit their health care provider. It’s more difficult to get school-age children in to see a provider during the school year.

Ehresmann noted that there are greater opportunities for influenza vaccination today so there are fewer excuses for not vaccinating children, especially school-age children and adolescents. “Many clinics

will be offering walk-in hours for influenza vaccine over the next few months, so check with your home clinic,” Ehresmann said. “Also, most pharmacies and convenience clinics offer walk-in vaccinations for influenza. Some local public health agencies also offer the vaccine.”

It’s a good idea to call ahead and make sure that your clinic has vaccine formulations available if you have younger children, because they need specific types of vaccine. Pharmacists can vaccinate children 6 years and older.

Social Security announces 2.8 percent benefi t increase for 2019 Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 67 million Americans will increase 2.8 percent in 2019, the Social Security Administration announced last month.

The 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security

beneficiaries in January 2019.

Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $132,900 from $128,400.

ABBY WHITE: Military broadens horizons for nursing career FROM PAGE 1

there was a message on my answering machine from the Navy recruiter. I set up a meeting with him and forged a new plan to join the Navy.”

After filling out the same paperwork for a second time, White was officially accepted into the U.S. Navy in March 2004. Both of White's grandfathers as well as uncles and cousins also served in the military; her grandfather William Burrows was a SeaBee during World War II and Wayne Dirksen was in the Army Air Corps piloting glider planes in Europe during World War II. Cmdr. White has now been a Navy nurse corps officer for more than 14 years. She started out at the lowest Navy officer rank of ensign and was later promoted to lieutenant junior grade, lieutenant and then lieutenant commander. In September, she was promoted to commander.

Her military career began in Okinawa, Japan, at Naval Hospital Okinawa from April 2004 to May 2006, where she was assigned as a staff nurse in the emergency department.

“I never thought of being a Navy nurse or of living in Japan, and certainly didn't expect to be assigned to the emergency department,” she said. “I had wonderfully skilled and patient mentors who helped me develop foundational skills that I reflect on often and try to emulate as my career has advanced. I also gained lifelong friends, being so far away.”

After two years she moved to San Diego and worked at Naval Medical Center San Diego from June 2006 to

July 2009. She was initially assigned to the medical surgical unit and worked there for a year before she was asked to deploy to Kuwait. White spent eight months at Camp Buehring in Kuwait working as the senior nurse at the Troop Medical Center (base clinic).

After returning from Kuwait, she transitioned to the intensive care unit. In June 2009 she was married and “had a wonderful three-year honeymoon in Europe.”

From August 2009 to August 2012 she was stationed at Naval Hospital Naples, Italy, where she was assigned to the emergency room as the nurse manager. She was also deployed to Afghanistan from July 2010 through March 2011.

In September 2012 White reported to the James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, where she was assigned as the nurse manager of the emergency department. She now works in the emergency department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Although White has absolutely loved all of the adventures and developing her nursing career, she said being away from home has always been difficult.

“It's especially hard around holidays, birthdays, special events, surgeries, deaths ... but leaning on those stationed with you and making lifelong friends from around the world has been wonderful.”

White noted that this Veterans Day, people should take the time to think about all of the people who have served in the military.

• An officer responded to a possible abandoned postal truck blocking the roadway in the 100 block of Pine Street Oct.24. The officer found the vehicle and contacted the USPS, which arranged a tow for the vehicle.

• An officer responded to a report of a dog that had been hit by a vehicle in the 6300 block of Otter Lake Road Oct. 25. The dog was returned to its owner.

• Officers responded to a theft from vehicle report in the 200 block of Teckla Court Oct. 25. Officers collected evidence and are investigating the case.

• Officers responded to a sexual assault report from the 300 block of Elm Street Oct. 25. Officers received preliminary information and forwarded the case to investigations.

• An officer responded to a call of a severed gas

The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to the 7000 block of Centerville Road Oct. 23 to assist the Centennial Lakes Police Department in locating a male who fled from officers. The male was located and arrested for multiple offenses.

• Officers responded to a call of a two-vehicle personal injury accident in the 6400 block of Hodgson Road Oct. 23. One driver was bleeding from the head and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

• Officers responded to a disorderly conduct report in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Oct. 23.

Two adult females were subsequently issued citations for disorderly conduct.

• An officer responded to a call of a hit-andrun property damage accident in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Oct. 24. No one was injured, and the case is under investigation.

• Officers responded to

• An officer responded to a complaint of juveniles ringing the doorbell of the complainant's house (6300 block of Red Fox Road) and running away Oct. 25.

• Officers responded to a report of a singlevehicle accident with possible injuries in the 6000 block of Centerville Road Oct. 26. The female driver and male passenger reported no injuries, but Lino Lakes Fire was needed to extricate the male from the vehicle due to the damage severity. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the occupants were transported to their residence.

• Officers responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the roadway in the 6300 block of Hodgson Road Oct. 26. Officers arrived and used water

cans to control the fire until the fire division arrived to put out the fire. The vehicle was unoccupied.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 8000 block of I-35E Oct. 27.

The vehicle was found to be stolen and the driver and passenger were arrested and transported to jail.

• Officers responded to a report of several smashed pumpkins and a garbage can in the roadway near the 6400 block of 12th Avenue Oct. 27.

• Officers responded to a residential burglary report in the 8200 block of 20th Avenue Oct. 28.

Officers are currently investigating.

• A resident from the 6700 block of Clearwater Creek reported a string of their holiday lights was cut Oct. 28. The suspects are unknown, and extra patrol was requested.

• Officers responded to a call of a two-vehicle personal injury accident in the 7500 block of Lake Drive Oct.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to the area of Lexington Avenue and West Road in Circle Pines Oct. 24 on report of a suspicious male in the area. The male fled the area before officers arrived.

• An assault was reported in the 4200 block of Woodland Road in Circle Pines Oct. 24.

• Officers responded to a phone call theft report in the 8900 block of North Highway Drive in Lexington Oct. 24.

The caller advised two bikes were stolen from her shed overnight.

The estimated loss was $1,200; however, the bikes were later recovered.

• Officers responded to a two-vehicle property damage crash in the area of Lake Drive and Griggs Avenue in Lexington Oct. 25. An adult male was cited for driving without

insurance and his vehicle was towed from the scene. The estimated damage was more than $1,000.

• Officers responded to a license plate theft in the 1600 block of Sorel Street in Centerville Oct. 27.

• Officers responded to the 200 block of Little John Drive in Circle Pines Oct. 27 for a warrant arrest.

Police records state officers confirmed the warrant and then entered the house with the consent of the homeowner. The male suspect was arrested without incident and transported to jail.

• Police were dispatched to the 3800 block of Flowerfield Road in Lexington Oct. 28 on report of a found knife in a mailbox. Police retrieved the knife and brought it back to base.

• Officers responded to a two-vehicle personal injury accident in the area of Lake Drive and Lexington Avenue in Lexington Oct. 28. One driver was subsequently arrested for third-degree DWI.

NAMES IN THE NEWS Ava Ernst, daughter of Matthew and Holly Ernst of North Oaks, has earned the opportunity to attend the National All-American Miss pageant following her top-five placement at the state pageant in July. The 2018 national pageant will be held at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, during Thanksgiving week. Representing the state of Minnesota, Ava will have the opportunity to win her share of over $500,000 in cash and prizes.

Ernst is an eighthgrader at Chippewa Middle School and a second year member of the Mounds View High School swim and dive team. She is an “A" honor roll student and a member of Student Council and Youth in Government.

November started off pleasant enough but then came the weekend. It’s been a tough Fall doing yard work. Unless you have nothing better to do, we haven’t had much of a dry stretch to do leaves. I usually just like to mulch them with my mower. I was able to get a few hours in on Saturday. Granted the leaves were a bit wet still from previous rain, but I was able to get the job done. It looked pretty good. Then came Sunday.

A little snow, no collection, some light rain and wind, and thanks to a red oak it didn’t look like I’d done much of anything.

We need a nice run of sunny and drier weather.

School renovation expands opportunities for students

An expanded and renovated St. Odilia Catholic Community in Shoreview celebrated with a grand re-opening this fall.

The festivities capped off a yearlong construction project to address community ministerial needs, especially the school’s growth, and to create innovative learning spaces.

In all, St. Odilia added 25,000 square feet of new space, including six new classrooms, and remodeled another 25,000 square feet of existing space.

The expansion was the fi fth significant renovation since St. Odilia opened its doors in 1960. St. Odilia School currently enrolls 615 preschool through eighth grade students. The school grew 14 percent over last year, welcoming 42 transfer students this fall. St. Odilia’s preschool enrolls 150 students, up from 85 students five years ago.

Two preschool and kindergarten classrooms were recently added to accommodate student growth.

According to Principal Brian Ragatz, “St. Odilia offers ‘whole child education’ — one that encompasses academics, faith, character and service. Our new facilities enable us to deliver on this promise every day.”

The expansion features a new Learning Lab that provides resources for students on both ends of the learning spectrum. As a dedicated work space for math and reading specialists, a student services coordinator and a counselor, the Learning Lab welcomes students who don’t qualify for a school district’s Individual Educational Plan but still have additional learning needs.

Students who do qualify for service through their districts can visit the Learning Lab to work with the Mounds View School District’s special education teachers. The Learning Lab also offers enrichment services for students who could use additional challenges beyond what is offered in their classroom setting.

“As a faith-based school, we feel that we have a moral obligation to meet the needs of students,” Ragatz said. “If a child comes to us with a learning challenge, we will find ways to help. If a child is an accelerated learner, we will find ways to enrich.

We want to honor each child’s ability and make sure they all have a place at the table.”

St. Odilia also added a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Lab and classroom, staffed with a new STEM specialist. Every

kindergarten through eighth grade student visits at least once a week to conduct hands-on science and engineering experiments, which are incorporated into their regular classroom curriculum.

“We want our students to understand that STEM applies to every part of our lives,” said Brianna Walrath, St. Odilia’s STEM specialist.

“The new STEM Lab gives our students the space to engage in this integrated, hands-on learning. They are developing problem-solving skills with their team, making mistakes (and even a few messes!), and becoming critical, creative thinkers.”

In addition to these new classrooms, St. Odilia built an expanded, lightfi lled library, band/orchestra practice area, and a media center that houses three 3D printers. Seven fourth- through eighth-grade robotics teams meet in the media center after school to work on projects and compete regionally. St. Odilia also repurposed existing space for a new designated art room, middle school drama classes and an indoor play area for preschoolers.

Apartment complex brings ‘Uptown lifestyle’ to the burbs

SHOREVIEW — A young man was touring a Greco luxury apartment building in Minneapolis’s North Loop a few weeks ago but decided it was a bit too far from his job at Boston Scientific in Arden Hills.

He was redirected to Greco’s newest luxury apartment building in Shoreview’s corporate park, Loden SV, just across Lexington Avenue from his job. And he was sold on the place — a recreation of Greco’s urban lifestyle for the suburbs.

In the lobby, there are lattes and espresso available 24/7 from the apartment’s “space machine,” said CEO Josh Brandsted. “That is part of living here; that is part of the lifestyle.”

Next to the lattes is a 2000-squarefoot fitness room with ample equipment — treadmills, rowers, ellipticals, strength equipment. The idea is that apartment dwellers wouldn’t need a gym membership anymore.

Part of the lifestyle is also social activities. The apartment is already planning cooking demonstrations and beer and wine tastings. In the summer, there will be yoga, lawn bowling leagues and pickleball in partnership with the Shoreview pickleball leagues, plus a pool, fire pit, outdoor kitchens and indoor/outdoor bar space that can be used by residents. There is a 12-seat theater inside that residents can use and hook up to their Netflix account.

Residents can use eight Lodenowned bikes, two paddleboards, a kayak and electric scooters on a firstcome, fi rst-served basis. The developer installed sidewalks to connect the apartments to trails on Lexington Avenue and Country Road F. Celebrating the outdoors in the Shoreview community, which is known for its extensive trail system, is an emphasis of Greco’s newest complex. Most of its recent luxury apartment projects have been in Minneapolis.

There is a quarter-acre dog park on site, as well as a pet spa. The apartment plans to have a mobile groomer a couple times a month. Residents can have up to two pets. “Thirty to forty percent of our residents typically have a pet of some sort,” Brandsted said.

There is a co-working space in the lobby due to so many remote, flexible and work-at-home jobs these days and the fact that the apartment building is so close to several Fortune 500 companies, he added. Communitywide Wi-Fi is included. All resident parking is

There are four types of units: studios starting at $1,200; one-bedroom units at $1,320; two-bedroom units at $1,800; and three-bedroom units for $2,350.

Residents pay their own utilities. The building will cost $43 million to complete. The 206 units were 40 percent filled by opening day Oct. 19.

Construction of the outdoor area will continue through next year. It is the largest outdoor space Greco has built with its urban lifestyle buildings, said Josh Caris, maintenance manager. A second 206-unit building, estimated at another $43 million, will begin construction next summer.

When completed, it will be Greco’s largest project. The building was designed by BKV Group architects and constructed by Frana.

Canadian Douglas fir was used in the structure of the commons area to complement the woods to the east of the building and the surrounding Shoreview area. “We thought it was really important to bring those natural elements to this building,” Brandsted said.

park. It was the old location of Deluxe Corporation, which moved east down I-694 seven or eight years ago.

The site has sat vacant since then.

Eagle Ridge approached Greco about the possibility of an apartment community in 8-acre area amid the 35-acre corporate park. At first, Greco wasn’t sure, Brandsted remembered. But after looking at the area with many employers close by, they took the leap.

they needed to ensure they made the right choice last month.

Greco was founded by Arnie Gregory in 1992 — he was a pioneer in the North Loop and Northeast Minneapolis condo redevelopment and in 2008 Greco led the way in a resurgence of new apartments replacing old buildings in Uptown with its “Blue Apartments.”

Many of Gregory’s friends and family are the investors in Loden SV; one is a Shoreview resident. “They believe in Shoreview and the outdoor recreation,” Brandsted said.
