Crown Iron Works breaks ground on global headquarters in Blaine

BLAINE — Crown Iron Works broke ground on its $14 million global headquarters located at 9879 Naples St. NE in Blaine on Halloween.

For the past 40 years or so, Crown

Iron Works has been located in Roseville. “We have outgrown the space. We have zero extra office space and our innovation center, our piloting capability, is much smaller than we would like it to be,” said Mike Hoerle, Crown’s vice president of Global Engineering. “We will more than triple our innovation space with

this buildout.”

Blaine Economic Development Coordinator Erik Thorvig explained that the city first learned Crown was looking for a new location in April 2016 and around a year ago is when “they really started to look closely at SEE CROWN IRON WORKS, PAGE 9

City's bond rating increases, will save residents money

LINO LAKES — A bond rating increase might seem pretty mundane, but “it's kind of a big deal,” according to Mayor Jeff Reinert and other city staff.

“This is kind of a big deal because it affects the rate that we get when we bond for projects, which saves our residents dollars,” Reinert said.

The city was recently notified by S&P Global Ratings that its long-term rating increased to AA+, which is the second-highest a municipality can receive. Since 2010, the city has held the rating of AA. “I remember when I was elected to the City Council after the 1999 election, our bond rating was A-, which is sixth from the top. Over the years we moved up four spots, and then held for a number of years until now,” Reinert recalled.

S&P Global Ratings has been in business for more than 150 years and is one of the world's leading providers in credit ratings. Other providers include Moody's and Fitch Ratings.

In addition to a long-term rating of AA+, the city's general obligation bond rating went from AA to AA+ and its appropriation debt rating from AA- to AA. According to S&P's report, “The outlook is stable. We base the upgrade on the city's improved economic

Exchange students bring cultural diversity to Centennial

Students attending Centennial High School will likely learn a few things about Brazil, Norway and Japan, thanks to a few visitors.

This year there are three exchange students in the district. They include AFS students Vilde Hveem and Felipe Fernandes and Chain of Lakes Rotary student Hozuki Sato.

Earlier this year there was also a student from Germany, but she had to return home early due to family circumstances.

“They bring cultural diversity to our school. We have a proud history of having exchange students here that started way back with former principal Lawrence Biehn (1966-1993).

He was very big into exchange students, and that history has carried on through the years,” said Principal Tom Breuning. “It has been an excellent fit for us, and it is something that we will do every year.”

One cultural difference he has noticed so far is the food. He said he likes Brazil’s food better; however, he loves hotdish, especially tater tot hotdish. Another difference is the weather: the coldest it gets in Brazil is around 50 degrees.

Even though he is not used to the cold temperatures, he is excited for winter so he can try ice fishing and skiing for the fi rst time.

Vilde Hveem

Hveem, a senior, is from Saeboevik, Norway and has been to the U.S. nine times, primarily on the West Coast.

Her family owns an apartment in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. She has also been to each of the Scandinavian countries as well as Germany and Iceland.

She wanted to study in the U.S. because she has heard about many of her family members’ experiences here. “My grandma was a foreign exchange student 50 years ago and my uncle was one 30 years ago,” she said.

she plans to either take a year off to travel, go to school to become a teacher, or join the Army.

Hozuki Sato Sato, a junior, is from Soma City, Fukushina, Japan. This is her fi rst time in the U.S., but she has also visited Korea and Guam.

She said she wanted to be an exchange student here to visit the country, experience another culture and learn the language. Sato is the fi rst exchange student to be sponsored by the Chain of Lakes Rotary Club and will spend her time here with

four different host families.

“I love it here. I love school, the World Culture Club, my friends and family,” she said.

In addition to World Culture Club, Sato also participated in choir and plans to join the girls basketball team.

She is looking forward to seeing snow.

Bruening said he hopes to see six or seven exchange students at Centennial next year.

Important day in world history

T

he dedication of a soldier’s memorial in downtown White Bear Lake Nov. 11 prompted a little research into the meaning of Armistice Day and the end of World War I. The historic signing at Compiegne, France, took place at 11 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month 100 years ago. About 17 million soldiers and civilians died in the five-year conflict; 116,000 of them American.

After a German U-boat sunk a U.S. Naval ship, President Woodrow Wilson appeared before Congress and declared war. It was April 1917.

The Minnesota History Center had an exhibit last year on the Great War, providing some interesting stats: When the war started, the United States population was 103 million. About one in seven people were foreign born and 90 percent were white. The median age was 25. Women made up one-fifth of the paid workforce and the average manufacturing job paid 53 cents an hour. Just one in 10 Americans paid any income tax.

Fewer than one in four adults owned an automobile and about a third of American households had a telephone.

My grandfather was one of the immigrants who fought in France. I don’t remember him, he died when I was four, but his doughboy helmet and a horsehair blanket he had on his Army cot are still in the family. All I know about his service is he was a trench runner, carrying messages from one trench to the next, dodging bullets, I assume. No one is left to tell his story.

Memories of the destruction caused by global conflict can fade as time passes — certainly after 100 years. There are no living veterans of World War I; the last died in 2012. No one who was there can tell the world what it was like at Verdun or the Marne or the Somme and what we should learn.

“There’s a danger that these events become so distant in our memories they become abstract,” Harvard professor Nicholas Burns told USA Today in 2014. “That’s why it’s vital to study history.”

World War I has been referred to as the first modern war because many of the technologies we now associate with military conflict—machine guns, tanks, aerial combat and radio communications— were introduced on a massive scale.

Actually the year 1918 was momentous for many reasons. The suffrage movement culminated in a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote. There were rumblings of prohibition hoping it would end the disease of alcoholism. Millions of women entered the workforce to support men who went to war and replace those who never returned.

But the last major story of 1918 was the Spanish flu.

The first global war helped spread one of the world’s deadliest global pandemics, the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 20 to 50 million people worldwide.

By the end of 1918, more American soldiers died of influenza than were killed on the battlefield.

Research by the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society (WBLAHS) on the pandemic in the pages of the Press found there were requirements for flu victims. Funerals became private as the only thing that contained the flu was isolation. Caskets had to be closed and flu victims buried within three days.

There were no services, no gatherings, no wakes.

WWI shaped the world in which we live, but alas, it was not the war to end all wars.

The public is invited to a free WBLAHS presentation on the Great War 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Ramsey County Library, 2150 Second St. in White Bear Lake. The historical society will discuss the impact of WWI on those who fought and those who supported them from the home front.

Election season over

T

he 2018 elections are over.

Time to move on.

The rough and tumble election season is over and I believe all of us are happy to have all the political commercials end. Both sides seemed to reach to the extreme rather than focus on where most Americans reside which is the middle.

So as adults, we must ask ourselves is that what we want to teach our children and future generations? Do we want our young adults to think that yelling and screaming and stomping our feet when we disagree with the outcome is how one should behave or do we want them to learn that you don’t always get what you want? Do we want them

Do we want them to understand that just because you disagree with a person doesn’t make them a horrible human being? Do we want them to know that tolerance means “the willingness to tolerate something such as the existence of opinions or behavior you don’t agree with?” As adults, we must lead by example and choose our actions and words carefully.

A few years ago I ran against a candidate in the primary and lost the election. It wasn’t even close.

But what my daughter said to me that night to this day stays with me. She said, “Mom, even though you lost, I am so glad you didn’t quit. You have always taught me not to quit and if you had not run in the primary it would have shattered everything you ever taught me.” As a parent, I had no idea the message I was sending by my actions. That night I called and congratulated my opponent.

A few days later, I sat down with him and told him that we would

be sharing some of the same constituents and I looked forward to working with him to serve them in the best way possible. It was important for my children to see that after an election battle, we must set our differences aside and treat one another with respect.

In America, our constitutional Republic is truly a political miracle. The fact that we can have a peaceful transfer of power is not commonplace across the globe.

As citizens we chose via elections who will represent us and those who are no longer in office peacefully give up their power to those who are being sworn in.

It is imperative that when an election is over, even if we don’t like the outcome, we accept it.

Yes, we do need to maintain the integrity in our elections, but we should not be protesting the validity simply because we disagree.

As Americans we should be proud of the incredible historic legacy of a peaceful transfer of power and should work to protect that so that we, ourselves, do not destroy the incredible miracle given to us by our forefathers.

The 2018 election season is over. Let’s focus on the incredible future we will leave for the next generation by working together, united as Americans.

Six ways to beat sickness and boost your immune system

T

is the season of hacking coughs and dripping noses.

We’ve all been there.

Avoiding a co-worker whose cough is loud, junky and so bad you worry just the sound will infect you!

Or, how about that sweet child whose nose is like a faucet?

Don’t forget the well-meaning (obviously sick) churchgoer who is coming to shake your hand!

Infectious invaders are increasing, spreading and threatening to turn your well-intentioned day into a mess! We’d like to give you some help.

There are ways to boost your immune system so it is strong enough to battle the bad coughs and crusty noses of your friends and family.

Immune System DeďŹ nition Your immune system is your body’s defense against infection and illness.

It recognizes when cells enter your body that do not belong there, such as bacteria and viruses, and will ďŹ ght against them to keep you from getting sick. While your immune system can be seemingly invincible, there are certain aspects of life that can break it down, making it harder to do its job.

How do you boost your immune system? There are several ways that you are able to keep your defenses in tip-top shape. Following a healthy lifestyle will certainly be a good start.

Making sure you have a healthy, well-

exercise and sleep and managing stress, are all ways to support your immune system and keep it running smoothly year-round.

1. Diet — Diet is extremely powerful in aiding your immune system.

Many foods have different vitamins and minerals in them that are beneďŹ cial to your body’s defense system.

Eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, and meat will help Movers and maintain proper Shakers function.

2. Exercise — Carolyn McClain There’s no doubt that exercise is inuential to many aspects of our health. Exercise promotes efďŹ cient blood circulation, which keeps the cells of the immune system moving so that they can effectively do their job.

Just 20 minutes of exercise can have an anti-inammatory response in the body.

Physical activity helps ush out toxins and bacteria in your lungs and airways. Which may reduce your chance of getting the u or common cold. Lucky for us, moderate activity a few times a week can do the trick.

3. Manage stress — Stress overload causes your body to produce more

spurts, such as during intense exercise, cortisol can produce an antiinammatory response, but chronic stress can cause your body to get used to the cortisol, making it prone to inammation. Managing your stress with things like meditation or yoga can help reduce your cortisol levels, thus improving your immune system.

4. Get enough sleep (turn off your phone) — Lack of sleep no doubt impacts your immune system.

Sleep helps your body recover, as well, so if you aren’t getting enough of it, your body will suffer. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines. Certain cytokines are used to ďŹ ght infection and inammation, but lack of sleep can decrease the production of these proteins, making it harder to ďŹ ght off illness. Sleep is also important to your circadian rhythm, which is a major factor in your immune health.

So, silence your phone, pull the curtains and create an environment that fosters sleep.

5. Stay hydrated and avoid excessive alcohol — Water is essential for our body to function properly. The recommended amount of water is eight glasses per day. Water helps maintain moisture, especially in the mucous membranes and nasal passages, where viruses often enter our bodies. Water helps oxygenate

up our cells and helps them function properly. This helps our muscles and organs work efďŹ ciently. Water also helps ush out toxins, through the kidneys.

Along with more water intake, alcohol consumption should be lessened. Alcohol can disrupt the circadian rhythm, causing a loss of sleep, which can impact our overall health. It can also suppress the activity of white blood cells whose key function is to do battle on the front lines with germs and other illnesscausing factors.

6. Take preventative steps — While you should deďŹ nitely incorporate all of the above aspects into consideration when trying to support your immune system, there are deďŹ nitely smaller things you can do to prevent unwanted illnesses or infections. Make sure your house is clean and sanitized. Wiping down surfaces with disinfectant wipes can inhibit bacteria and viruses from getting on countertops where you place food or utensils that end up in your mouth. Also, be sure to wash your hands frequently during cold and u season, as well as year-round.

Centennial takes second at 7AA Championship COON RAPIDS—The Centennial varsity swim and dive team placed second at the 7AA Section Championship Nov. 10.

The Cougars trailed Blaine, who took fi rst, by 22 team points. Senior Gabi Parkinson will advance to dive prelims at the state meet Nov. 14.

The Cougars placed third in the 200 medley relay (Madeline Fuller, Sarah Harville, Sarah Poellinger, Devon Brandt).

In the 200 free, Centennial won fourth (Wang), 11th (Katelyn Smith) and 14th (Nicole Kammer). The 200 IM results were sixth (Sarah Harville), ninth (Alison Harville) and 14th (Grace Wiege). Next in the 50 free sprint, the Cougars placed sixth (Poellinger), eighth (Kimberly Hareland), ninth (Devon Brandt) and 15th (Hailie Finke).

In 1m diving, Centennial placed third (Gabi Parkinson), seventh (Maggie Henninger) and 15th (Anna Sauter). In the 100 butterfly, the Cougars won fourth (Poellinger) and

fi fth (Fuller). The Cougars had a strong showing in the 100 free with a fourth (Wang), seventh (Brandt), 12th (Smith) and 13th (Hareland).

Kammer placed 11th in the 500 free. In the 200 free relay, the Cougars placed fourth (Poellinger, Sarah Harville, Hareland, Wang).

Centennial accumulated 49 team points in the 100 back placing third (Kayley Magnuson), fi fth (Fuller), sixth (Finke) and 11th (Calla Kamish).

The Cougars also had strong finishes in the 100 breast placing sixth (Sarah Harville), ninth (Alison Harville), 10th (Janessa Sandvold) and 16th (Wiege). The swimming season concluded with the 400 free relay in which Centennial won fi fth (Wang, Smith, Hareland, Brandt).

No Centennial swimmers advanced to the state meet this season. The Cougars next compete at the state diving prelims at University of Minnesota on Wednesday, Nov.14.

the site in Blaine.” He noted that land cost, location and the unique nature of the site probably tipped the scale toward Blaine.

“The cost of land in Blaine is typically cheaper than when you get closer in, whether it is Shoreview, Arden Hills or New Brighton. Real estate taxes are typically lower in Anoka County,” Thorvig said, adding the close proximity to I-35W and the fact that the site is set off on its own and not a part of a business park was probably attractive to Crown.

Hoerle said, “We searched the world over. We really searched for an area around our existing place because we are an engineering company and our intellectual property is our people, so we wanted our people to have a place that didn't greatly increase their commute ...We looked at a lot of other spaces, but this particular site in Blaine seemed to be the one that fit us the best.”

The project was officially approved by the City Council in June.

“One of the things that really attracted us to this company is the type of jobs they are bringing. There are over 100 jobs coming and over 70 percent of those jobs pay over $100,000,” Thorvig said. “And then the fact that it is their global headquarters and they are going to have a lot of people coming to Blaine was attractive.”

The city of Blaine also provided a financial incentive package in the amount of $1.2 million, which requires Crown Iron Works to add an additional 15 jobs with an average salary of at least $90,000 within the next two years. Hoerle explained the company currently has about 100 employees in the U.S. and the new facility will have a capacity of 140.

The global headquarters, which will be around 75,000 square feet in total, will be comprised of three buildings.

The main building, 67,000 square feet, will be home to the main office and part of the warehouse and innovation center.

A unique feature of the project will be a 100-foot tower. “We sell into the vegetable oil refining business. The equipment that goes in this tower are smaller versions of the equipment we sell into the industry,” Hoerle explained. “Many times those pieces of equipment are 60 to 70 feet tall, so that gives us some room above it and below it for working on the different columns.”

The smallest building on site will be used for the extraction of vegetable oils from things such as soybeans.

Crown, a division of CPM Holdings Inc., is a 140-year-old Minnesota-based global company with additional offices in the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, China, Germany, Honduras, Mexico, Russia and Ukraine, and currently employs 250 people worldwide.

Crown also serves the nutraceutical, specialty chemical, food and waste industries in the areas of specialty extraction (process recovery of essential oils and extracts), CO2 extraction and drying—with a variety of dryers, desolventizers and coolers for solvent and water wet products.

The developer of the project is Mortenson Development, which has owned the site for many years.

“Mortenson is a 64-year-old real estate and facilities company. We started as construction company and have evolved into a full range of real estate services,” Jeremy Jacobs, director of real estate development, said. “For the vast majority of the company's history, our facility's yard was on this site.”

Around 10 years ago, the company was in need of more space and relocated to Centerville. Mortenson actively began pursuing opportunities for developing the site three years ago and in 2016 the site was listed for sale. Jacobs said Mortenson has been working with Crown since April 2016.

The primary building will be up and fully enclosed by the end of this year.

The global headquarters is slated to be up and running by July 1, 2019.

“Anytime you bring a large employer with well-paying jobs, we hope that those people will potentially buy homes in Blaine, shop in Blaine ...The fact that (as a) global headquarters, they will be bringing a lot of customers to this location, it helps arguments if we start to look at new hotel options,” Thorvig said.

“It is always good to have that value of a building increase our industrial tax base. There are a lot of positive things that come about from a project like this.”

Medical manufacturer’s products likely made for someone you love

It turns out the bits of adhesive material manufactured beyond her lobby desk will save her niece's life.

Kari Ennulat, sales and marketing assistant at Innovize, a medical manufacturing company in Vadnais Heights, was shocked to fi nd out that the electrical insulator fi lm in her 19-year-old niece's cardioverter-defibrillator came from the place where she works every day.

The medical manufacturing company produces materials that are used by major medical device companies, said Dave Jessen, co-owner and vice president of sales and marketing.

Ennulat discovered Innovize produces the adhesive used in the batteries of her niece's defibrillator to prevent the battery from shorting out, she explained. Her niece, a pre-med student at Butler University in Indiana, was found passed out at a health club last year. Doctors discovered an electrical issue with her heart. The implanted cardioverter-defibrillator will shock it back, should it malfunction again.

“So, it will save her life,” Ennulat said.

The products made by the company are used in all Minnesota hospitals and across the country.

“We do a lot of component parts and we also make a lot of finished devices,” Jessen said. The products are sold to internationally known medical device companies that in turn supply medical providers.

Examples of products include patient and personal care products used for wound care, eye patches, breathing tube adhesives and wearable sensors. Innovize produces a sensor that monitors blood glucose and displays the levels on an iPhone.

It also continues to manufacture the components that stick to the skin for traditional blood glucose monitoring. It is working on a new product that will help detect breast cancer without requiring a mammogram. It also produces wound care products for veterinary care.

Innovize often works directly with its clients to engineer their designs in order to reduce costs and create innovation, Jessen said. Many of Innovize's supplies for production come from 3M nearby.

A $2 million production of items that test for water purity was moved from Mexico to Vadnais Heights because Innovize was able to make the process more efficient through its use of rotary printing and cutting, he added. The Mexican

manufacturer had been using a flat-sheet production method.

The company uses high-tech machines and robots that run at the command of the company's 150 employees and 20 temporary workers. It has never had a technology-related layoff. It has three shifts and three buildings located in northwest Vadnais Heights.

The culture of the company is well known in its field. Jessen said he hears that employees enjoy working where they can make a tangible difference in people's lives. The company's purpose of “Creating a culture and products that improve people's lives” brings all the workers together, he noted. The starting wages are a little above average — $14-15 per hour for a technician and $17-23 for an operator, said Ia Yang, human resources generalist.

Innovize gives back to the those it seeks to help through its business. It donated a $100,000 room at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital for long-term recovery. The room was the fi rst-ever to have circadian rhythm-based lighting in partnership with Philips Lighting, according to the University of Minnesota Foundation. The room housed one of the born-conjoined twins Paisleigh and Paislyn Martinez in 2017 during the child’s

Innovize also holds an annual run at Community Park in Vadnais Heights to raise funds for the hospital. Employees participate in other activities to benefit the hospital as well, such as making fleece blankets for children.

Innovize is celebrating 60 years this fall. The company began as GML Specialties (for founder Scott's wife's initials Gail M. Ledy). Scott’s son John now operates the company with Jessen. The two are high school friends. The company began manufacturing parts for computers and electronics.

Fifteen years ago, it chose to focus on the medical field. The fi rm has been located in Vadnais Heights since 1987.

North Oaks Holiday Home Tour, Boutique and Gala—it’s all about community giving North Oaks Guild 1 is proud to again showcase two beautifully decorated tour homes in the North Oaks community, and a holiday boutique at the North Oaks Golf Club Nov. 16-17. This year’s event also features a revised “Festival of Trees” Gala with a silent auction, tremendous food and dancing Saturday evening. This fun event will be held at the newly renovated North Oaks Golf Club. All proceeds benefit Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

As a part of the event, local area designers donate their time, talent and resources as designer participants for the Holiday Home Tour. Specializing in home interior design, they bring their expertise into the tour homes with a variety of holiday trimmings, trees, table-top settings and accessories throughout both homes. In turn, attendees gain ideas for their own holiday decorating and entertaining. With 14 designers in this year’s home tour and 30 artisan vendors in the Boutique, there’s “something for everyone in terms of holiday ideas” according to Children’s Hospital Guild President, Lisa Kelly, serving as chairperson for Guild 1.

Here’s what a few of the home designers have to say about the upcoming event, why they are involved and what to look for in the tour homes and at the Boutique.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • Several males were observed riding bicycles in the 6800 block of Black Duck Drive at night without proper lighting Oct. 30. They were advised of the proper requirements for nighttime use.

• Officers responded to a personal injury rollover accident on I-35E near the Main Street exit Oct. 30.

Officers assisted the State Patrol until the vehicle was towed.

• Officers responded to a report of a possible intoxicated driver who struck a guardrail in the area of Main Street and Lakeland Circle in Centerville Oct. 30. Officers assisted the Centennial Lakes Police Department and arrested the driver for DWI. • Officers responded to a male walking on the shoulder of Main Street with a cased fi rearm Oct. 31. He was located and advised of other options to walk.

• An officer was dispatched to a report of gunshots heard near a residential area in the 8000 block of Fourth Street Oct. 31.

Officers were unable to locate the source of the noise but advised the complainant some hunting was permitted near the area.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for no taillights in the 1300 block of I-35W Nov. 1. The male driver was arrested for third-degree DWI and booked into the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers responded to a report of juveniles attempting to access a building in the 500 block of Apollo Drive Nov. 1. Officers

identified the four males. Upon further investigation, it was discovered one had an active warrant and was booked; the others were picked up by an adult.

• Officers responded to a call regarding a male acting in a disorderly manner in the 7800 block of Century Trail Nov. 1.

He was transported to a hospital voluntarily.

• Officers responded to a report of someone going through the neighbors’ cars in the 7700 block of Carole Drive Nov.1. Officers arrived and were unable to located anyone.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E Nov. 2. The male driver was arrested for fourth-degree DWI and released to a sober party.

• Officers responded to a report of a shoplifting in progress at a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Nov. 2. The male suspect left without paying for merchandise and was subsequently cited for misdemeanor theft.

• Officers responded to Centennial Middle School for a trespassing complaint Nov. 2. Three juvenile males were found and will be charged with trespassing.

• Officers responded to a disturbance at a hotel in the 500 block of Apollo Drive Nov. 3. There was some arguing and brawling between numerous people. The officers mediated between the involved parties and separated them.

The parties were all mutually involved, and no one wanted to pursue criminal charges.

• Officers responded to the report of someone going through mailboxes in the 1200 block of Rondeau Lake Road W Nov. 3. Officers gathered information from the complainant and discovered it was someone handing out political fliers.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for driving conduct in the 6900 block of Sunset Avenue Nov. 3. The driver was subsequently arrested for fourth-degree DWI. • Officers responded to a report of underage drinking in the 800 block of Lois Lane Nov. 4. Officers learned three juveniles had consumed alcohol, and they were released to their parents.

• Officers responded to the 6800 block of Otter Lake Road to assist the State Patrol with a female who fled from a stolen vehicle Nov. 5. Officers located the female and took her into custody without incident. The female was later released to the State Patrol.

• An officer responded to a report of a stolen cell phone from a business in the 8000 block of Lake Drive Nov. 5.

The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a mail theft in the 9000 block of Jackson Avenue in Lexington Nov. 3. No suspects were located.

• Police responded to the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington Nov. 4 on report of a stolen vehicle. Officers were paroling the area and found the vehicle parked and unoccupied in the 8800 block of Syndicate Avenue. The vehicle was picked up by the owner.

• Officers arrested a

male on a warrant in the 9500 block of Dunlap Avenue in Lexington Nov. 5.

• Police were dispatched to the 9100 block of South Highway Drive in Lexington Oct. 31 on report of a burglary in progress. Information was collected.

• Officers took a phone call vehicle theft report from the 0 block of Circle Drive.

• Officers were dispatched to the area of Center Street and Centerville Road in Centerville for a two-vehicle property damage accident Oct. 31. One vehicle was badly damaged and towed from the scene.

There were no injuries and no citations were issued.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Local agencies participate in national drug take-back

Personal safety and drug awareness class

On Saturday, Oct. 26, community members were able to drop off unused prescription medications at local police departments as part of the National Drug Take-Back Initiative. The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department took in 83 pounds of unused prescription medications for destruction, which brings the year-to-date total of submitted unused prescriptions to 385 pounds.

Although the Centennial Lakes Police Department did not participate in the initiative on Saturday, it averages around 20 pounds of medications collected each month, as CLPD accepts drugs five days a week during normal business hours.

The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department will host two classes for the public Sunday, Dec. 16, at the police department, located at 640 Town Center Pkwy. The fi rst class will be a women's personal safety class from 1 to 3 p.m. The course will include light hands-on activity. The second class, which will be from 4 to 6 p.m., will cover drug awareness and recognition. The course will provide information to parents, caretakers and educators who want to know more about what to look for.

Both classes are free to attend for both residents and nonresidents; however, all participants must be at least 18 or older. RSVP is required

Trauma conference provides insights to parents, providers

“Children use behavior to tell us something is wrong,” said Dr. Nancy Binford, the keynote speaker last month at “Trauma, What Works? Tips, Tools & Takeaways,” a conference held at Anoka Ramsey Community College and hosted by the Anoka County Children and Family Council, Anoka County, Fridley Public Schools, Emma B. Howe YMCA and Alexandra House.

Binford provided tips on how to build capacity to manage a trauma. In the audience were approximately 150 foster parents, social workers, human services professionals and interested community members. Early intervention is key, Binford said.

Other tips included teaching selfreflection, being mindful of your own nonverbals and reactions, and having a plan on how to respond to a child.

Other sessions in the conference focused on neuro-biofeedback, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, nutrition, occupational therapy and moving mindfully.

The Anoka County Children and Family Council supports a Community Asset Fund (CAF) for mental wellness. Staff from Anoka County and the school districts and community service providers work collaboratively to bring trainings and resources to professionals and families.

The trauma conference was in response to requests for more training on the topic, according to Diana Hoffman, Anoka County intervention and prevention specialist and member of the CAF committee.

“For a while, we’ve been learning about what adverse childhood experiences are, like growing up in a house with domestic violence, substance abuse, illness or divorce,” Hoffman said. “People gave us feedback that they wanted to learn how to respond, so we put together the fall conference.

We’ll continue to develop and deliver trainings on the topic.
