Byrd family seeks donations for homeless

The Byrd family has found yet another way to make an impact both locally and across the Twin Cities this winter.

The Circle Pines family is well known for its Byrd Family Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to Centennial High School (CHS) seniors every May. The family’s main platform has been giving back to the community while encouraging diversity awareness.

For the first time, the Byrds are trying to increase awareness about homelessness. On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the family will host a Build a Blessing Bag charity event at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Circle Pines.

“There has been increased attention to the homeless in the Minneapolis and Anoka County areas. This is a huge part of interest for me and my family,” explained Clayton Byrd. “Me personally, I was on a mission trip to Denver, which has a huge homeless population.

Dog provides nonjudgmental reading practice

Pippy the therapy dog is becoming quite the celebrity around Washington, Anoka and Ramsey counties.

Three-year-old Pippy, who is thought to be a border colliecattle dog-whippet mix, is a part of the Dog Gone Reading program at the Hardwood Creek Library in Forest Lake, which takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month.

Pippy was Hugo resident Ashley Erickson’s fi rst foster dog.

Erickson quickly realized that her “foster fail” would make a great therapy dog.

“I was looking for a way to get more involved in the community and our dogs are such a huge part of our lives, so any excuse I can fi nd to incorporate my dog into what I am doing, the better,” she explained. “It seemed like a good fit. She has the perfect personality and temperament for this work. She is such a gift, I wanted to share her with other

people. She is so good, sweet and sensitive.”

In May 2017, Pippy was certified after completing an eight-week course at Total Recall School for Dogs in Hugo. Once a dog and its handler are certified, they are automatically sent a newsletter from Therapy Dogs International (TDI). Those newsletters often include a “help wanted” section for organizations that have requested a visit from a therapy dog.

interactions with homeless people and some of the breaks they don’t get.”

From now until the event Dec. 11, the family is hoping for donations from companies, organizations, sports teams and community members to fill blessing bags. Items needed include simple necessities such as socks, gloves, hand warmers, deodorant, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lotion, Chapstick, tissues, wet wipes, granola bars, etc.

Byrd said the hope is to fill between 200 and 300 blessing bags, which will then be distributed to the “tent city” area of Minneapolis located near the Hiawatha bridge, and homeless shelters in Anoka County. Each blessing bag will cost $10. Monetary donations will also be accepted and will go toward blessing bags in addition to the Byrd Family Scholarship Fund.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 11, the family will also need “as many as people as possible” to help organize and fill the bags.

Depending on the success of the event, Byrd said the family will consider making the blessing bags an annual event.

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its Nov. 13 meeting: • Heard from resident Bernadine Skoglund, who lives on Lake Drive near the Holiday Gas Station.

She told the council she has seen a timber wolf in her backyard. “My concern is the little kids from the apartment complex who ride their bicycles to the gas station unchaperoned,” she said. “I do think people should be aware of the fact that there is an animal strolling through the neighborhood.”

• Approved the consent agenda, which included expenditures, Oct. 22 work session and meeting minutes and resolutions denying a therapeutic massage business license and individual license to Yijing Tan of New Royalty LLC. During the background investigation, the public safety department discovered the applicant did not provide necessary information such as tax identification number, citizenship and workers compensation coverage and also provided what it described as “false information.”

• Awarded the sale of $6,195,000 general obligation bonds, series 2018A, for the LaMotte area and West Shadow Lake Drive area street and utility projects and trunk watermain improvements along Lake Drive.

The city received seven bids; the low bid was received from Robert W. Baird & Co Inc., at an interest rate of 3.15 percent.

• Scheduled a public hearing for Monday, Dec. 10, on consenting to the issuance of senior housing facility revenue notes for the Heritage Apartments Inc. (Lyngblomsten) proposed senior living campus at the northwest corner of Hodgson Road and County Road J. Heritage Apartments Inc. submitted a proposal, which includes the fi nancing, in part, of the Lino Lakes project, in addition to the refi nancing of an existing facility. State statute authorizes a municipality to issue obligations to fi nance the acquisition or improvement of property located outside of the corporate boundaries of such municipality if the governing body of the city in which the property is located consents by resolution to the issuance of such obligations.

Heritage Apartments Inc. requested the city of Falcon Heights issue revenue obligations to fi nance combined multifamily housing and health care developments. In order for Falcon Heights to issue the note, Lino Lakes must grant “host approval” to the issuance of the note.

• Held the fi rst reading of an ordinance establishing the 2019 city fee schedule. Changes include weed and mowing violations, building permits, escrow deposits, water meter rental and testing, trunk utility connections, lateral service connections, surface water management and development fees. Finance Director Sarah Cotton explained fees were adjusted to account for infl ationary increases.

• Held the fi rst reading of an ordinance increasing the salaries of the mayor and City Council.

Effective Jan. 1, 2020, the mayor’s salary will be $10,112 and council members’ salaries will be $8,500.

City Administrator Jeff Karlson explained the mayor and council last received a raise in 20082010, and a salary survey of 21 comparable cities showed that the Lino Lakes City Council was considerably below the average. The council also agreed to eliminate the $40 meeting stipend.

• Approved a labor agreement between the city and LELS Local 299 (police officers). Karlson explained the city and officers underwent a long negotiation process but were not able to reach an agreement. The officers then fi led for arbitration, which was held in September, with a decision in

October. The union accepted the following terms: ° 2.75 percent wage increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018 and 2.5 percent wage increase effective Jan. 1, 2019. ° Employer will contribute $567 toward the monthly premium for single coverage and $1,182 for family coverage. ° Employer will contribute 100 percent of the base single plan and $1,182 plus 50 percent of the 2019 premium increase toward the family plan. ° The fi refighter stipend increases to $1.40 per hour in 2018 and $1.44 in 2019. Thereafter, increases will be equivalent to the annual wage increase.

• Approved a resolution establishing the 2018-19 compensation plans for nonunion employees.

The 2018 plan contains a salary adjustment of 2.75 percent, and the 2019 budget includes a 2.5 percent wage increase for all city personnel.

Karlson explained the city has still not reached an agreement with the police sergeants; arbitration is scheduled for Nov. 20.

• Appointed Justin Williams to the vacant utilities supervisor position after former Utilities Supervisor Tim Hillesheim retired at the end of October. Williams’ hourly rate of pay will be $37.38.

• Appointed Layne Chapman for the utilities maintenance worker position, which became vacant after Williams was promoted. Chapman’s hourly rate of pay will be $25.12.

• Appointed Lucas Evens to paid-on-call fi refighter at Fire Station No. 2. Evens’ hourly rate of pay will be $9.50 for pre-service training and $10.50 following the completion of necessary training.

• Appointed Monika Mann to the Community Development intern position effective Nov. 26.

Former Community Development intern Ryan Saltis resigned in October. Mann’s hourly rate of pay will be $12 per hour for 29 hours each week.

• Approved a joint powers agreement (JPA) with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). The BCA oversees the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force and the appropriated funds for the investigation of fi nancial crimes in Minnesota. Under the JPA, the city is authorized to be reimbursed for overtime expenses stemming from the investigation into fi nancial crimes. The city also has the ability to be reimbursed for fi nancial crimes training.

• Approved a three-year lease agreement with North Memorial Ambulance Service. North Memorial’s current lease expires Dec. 31. The lease allows North Memorial to utilize one of the two fi re stations to house one ambulance and crew. North Memorial will pay the city $1,200 per month.

• Held the fi rst reading of an ordinance calling for the vacation of right of way along Sandpiper Drive and drainage and utility easements originally dedicated in Lakes Addition No. 1.

At the Sept. 24 council meeting, a JPA with Anoka County was approved in conjunction with the West Shadow Lake Drive area project.

As part of the agreement, an existing portion of city right of way, which is currently being used as golf course, will be vacated. This vacation would result in the reversion of the property to the county. The roadway is not planned to be extended in the future, and a cul-de-sac will be constructed at the end of Sandpiper Drive.

• City Planner Katie Larsen updated the council

on the Watermark development. Although the council was scheduled to take action on the planned unit development (PUD) fi nal plan/fi nal plat, master development agreement and the 1st Addition development agreement, the council tabled the items to a future meeting.

•Amended the 2030 Land Use Plan and Utility Staging Plan for land located east of I-35E and north of Main Street. The 2030 Comprehensive Plan guided most of the area for commercial and industrial development and was included in the post 2030 utility staging area. Community Development Director Michael Grochala explained this area has begun to receive some interest from site selectors for technology-based industries, and one key component of the site selection process for prospective developers is project readiness. To further economic development goals and enhance readiness, city staff recommended amending the land use plan along with some modifications as part of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan update. An amendment to the utility staging plan is also proposed to allow for immediate extension of utilities for eligible projects, which will make more land readily available for business and industrial development.

• Approved (fi nal) payment no. 4 in the amount of $14,647 to Arcade Asphalt Inc. for the Birch Street trail replacement project and the new Century Farms trail.

• Approved a resolution authorizing the acquisition of a permanent easement for the corner of Hodgson Road and County Road J for a trunk utility improvement project. To provide municipal utilities to the southwest area of Lino Lakes, the city will need to acquire an easement from the property located at 255 Ash St. A 20-foot easement across the rear of the property will be needed for the proposed sanitary sewer force main and trunk water main. An agreement has been reached with the property owner in the amount of $13,500. Funding for the easement acquisition will come from the trunk area and unit fund.

• Approved quotes and awarded a construction contract to low bidder Dresel Contracting in the amount of $20,000 for the trunk water main connection at Birch Street and Black Duck Drive.

The project will improve the pressure and supply and will be funded through the water operating fund.

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at City Hall. There will also be a work session immediately beforehand at 6 p.m. in the Community Room.

Thanksgiving traditions

W

hether you’re traveling to a Thanksgiving meal or hosting one of your own, it’s a favored tradition for most of us. Growing up, our family would often travel to Park Rapids to join my grandparents; as I got older we went on family ski trips to Colorado, as it was timely with a downhill race camp I would attend. More recently the holiday has been with my in-laws around our table, as my parents and siblings have created new traditions. It’s great because my cooks a 20-pound Publisher’s mother-in-law turkey for four adults and two kids, so we can eat leftovers for several View days. And she still makes the Carter Johnson cranberry Jello mold, even though I am the only one who still likes it.

While many of us think of a big turkey dinner, Thanksgiving isn’t all about the food. I talked to some colleagues and friends about what Thanksgiving means to them. Several mentioned getting together with family they don’t get to see as often as they would like. One said their mother has everyone go around the table and say one thing they’re thankful for. She said they made fun of it as kids, but now she really appreciates it. Another spoke of a drunk uncle who gets loud and tells the same jokes. Another mentioned the love of trying new side dishes and will be making the butternut squash soup recipe by our ‘Wild Chow’ food columnist, Lisa Erickson.

Her family is also into doing the Thanksgiving 10K runs so they can justify an extra slice of pie.

My parents talk about how my oldest sister Julie would bundle up and join Art Ramberg and family for a walk around White Bear Lake each year.

One activity we have enjoyed is the Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels coordinated by Bill Foussard. I have volunteered when possible the past several years with my kids and father-inlaw. It’s a few hours in the morning that leaves us humbled and inspired. Now in it’s 48th year and stationed out of Cretin Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, this program will serve more than 18,000 meals to families all over the east metro area on Thanksgiving Day. You want to be part of this. You can show up at 2 a.m. to help pack meals, or arrive at 7 a.m. and pick up a delivery route. We have always delivered meals, which is typically to a half dozen homes. The key is having two people in the car so one can drop the meal while the other stays in the car for fast and efficient delivery.

This Thanksgiving, think of the things you are thankful for, both big and small. May your home be filled with the smell of melting butter and gravy; may you take on a new challenge, such as a family walk, fun run, or volunteer opportunity; and may you be surrounded by the people you love continuing to create fond memories.

Mid-term Election In many ways it was a wild ride this election season. There were many change-ups at the state and national level, as well as here locally.

Local elections in Grant brought in two new faces, Mahtomedi, Forest Lake and Centennial school district levies and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s race were something to watch. The Vadnais Heights City Council seats were so close that an automatic recount was necessary. Voter turnout showed a positive trend with early voting numbers. One letter to the editor writer asked that we get our Voter’s Guide out earlier. We will strive to do that. Elections are important to all of us, even if we tire of the junk mail and commercials. Get to know your local representatives, city council, and school board members so you know where they stand on the issues that affect your family and neighborhood.

Statutes of limitation “You snooze, you lose.”

T

hat phrase, in some respects, summarizes the legal doctrine known as the Statute of Limitations.

It holds that if you wait too long to begin your lawsuit, you lose the right to do so — even if you had the best legal claim that ever existed. Why would this be?

Movers and Most folks understand the legal Shakers system’s focus on the importance of Greg Galler a neutral and impartial method of resolving disputes. Intertwined with that is the goal of resolving disputes in a reasonably expeditious manner. As disputes age, evidence tends to disappear.

As time passes, memories fade and witnesses become harder to fi nd. The best and most reliable evidence can normally be found closer in time to the event which leads to a lawsuit.

The idea of a time limit to bring a claim in court exists for both civil lawsuits and in criminal cases — where the state wishes to bring charges against someone.

Let’s say you buy a car at Sneaky Pete’s Car Sales (at the corner of Scam Avenue and Fraud Street).

Pete promises, in writing, that the car has a clean title, is in perfect working condition and, even though it is 20 years old, the 15,000 miles on the odometer are accurate. You pay him and drive away — but you don’t drive very far.

The car breaks down. A mechanic tells you that the odometer has been tampered with, the transmission is in shambles and the engine is worn out. The mechanic estimates the car has over 400,000 miles on it. You try to register the car and fi nd that it has a “salvage” title and has been reported as stolen. Sneaky Pete refuses to return your money.

You would likely do pretty well in a civil suit. However, you can’t wait too long to bring your claim.

In Minnesota, a clock starts to

run on your claim as soon as it arises. In this case, that might be from the date of the sale or from the date when you fi rst knew, or should have known, of the breach of contract. Minnesota’s civil Statutes of Limitation vary quite a bit depending on the type of lawsuit. They can be as short as two years or as long as six years — with others being set at three or four years.

Sneaky Pete might also be in jeopardy of being charged criminally. Criminal Statutes of Limitations typically vary from three years to nine years — except that for murder the clock never runs out. For either civil or criminal cases, there are also a variety of circumstances that can cause the clock to be paused or “tolled.” Bottom line: It is a fairly complicated area of the law.

If you have a legal claim, it would be wise to pursue your legal remedies in a timely fashion.

You don’t want to sleep on your rights only to wake up and fi nd that they are gone.

What are you thankful for?

I

usually start planning our Thanksgiving meal about a month in advance, not because I’m preparing complicated food, but because I’m excited to cook.

Thanksgiving is a foodie’s dream holiday.

Does it get any better than cooking a tasty meal for family and friends?

Wait. What if some family members are not there? Is it still fun?

This year is different for me. This year we will be going to someone else’s home. I don’t know what I was thinking back in July when I accepted the invitation—actually I do. I was overwhelmed and sad about the passing of my beloved dad. The thought of having a holiday without him sounded painful and very‌ unfun. I miss my Pops.

Pops always made the stuffing, baked apple pies, and carved the turkey. My dad was a genius in the

kitchen. He was not a formally trained chef, he just loved to cook, and cooked for everyone he loved.

Growing up, we’d go out to eat at some restaurant, and he would spend the next Wild Chow few weeks trying to master whatever Lisa he ordered. There will be a free-will donation box to purchase gifts for children who are in the hospital over Christmas. The Masons have agreed to match any raised donations.

The Bible explored Whether the Bible is real, reliable and relevant will be discussed at Lifetree CafĂŠ at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Pops’ Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies to Share 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla 2 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp. baking soda 2 Tbsp. milk, warm

1 tsp. salt 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup walnuts, chopped Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugars until smooth and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Beat in eggs one at a time; add the vanilla. In another bowl combine flour, soda, and salt. Add to the creamed butter. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto prepared pans. Bake for 9 minutes. The edges will be light brown. Do not over bake. Cool on a wire rack.

How did turkey become the Thanksgiving bird?

At Thanksgiving dinner, it’s all about the turkey—but how did the American tradition of turkey at Thanksgiving come about?

It’s difficult to separate myth from truth in the story of the first Thanksgiving among the Pilgrims and indigenous people of North America.

One fact that seems to be generally agreed upon by historians is that turkey probably wasn’t a menu item at that historic meal. Venison was the main course. So why do most families roast a turkey at their annual get-togethers today?

NPR correspondent Robert Krulwich reported in a 2011 article that part of the responsibility might be due to 19th-century magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale. Hale exerted a certain influence on women’s fashion and literary education. Some of her writings include

In doing so, though, he was not delivering a critique of the Great Seal but a new medal issued by the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of Continental Army veterans.

“For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country,” he wrote. The Founding Father argued that the eagle was “a bird of bad moral character” that “does not get his living honestly” because it steals food from the fishing hawk and is “too lazy to fish for himself.”

Turkey was an important part of the diet of many indigenous cultures in North America. Ancient Mesoamericans were the first to domesticate this species—its meat and eggs provided food, while its feathers were used as important decorative items. Today, most domestic turkeys are white in color, thanks to the hand of human selection. Their white coloration makes pinfeathers (or developing feathers in the bird’s skin) less visible, making for a more aesthetically pleasing meal.

The selective breeding that changed the turkey’s color is also responsible for creating heavier

birds that are unable to fly. Domestic turkeys also have shorter legs, which means they cannot run as fast as their wild relatives.

Benjamin Franklin famously commented in one of the letters that he believed the turkey would be a better national symbol than the bald eagle. One of the reasons he cited was the turkey’s fearlessness against all intruders—a fearlessness many Minnesotans are familiar with as troops of turkeys parade into their back yards and across roadways at dusk.

In a viral video released last year, the South Minnetonka Police were called to a Shorewood home to help shoo out a turkey that had crashed through a window and become comfortable in the living room.

Turkeys have something of a reputation for being unintelligent— in his letter, Franklin defended them despite

the fact they are “a little vain and silly.” But a 2013 article in Scientific American reported that wild turkeys lead very complex social lives.

Male turkeys generally live in closely bonded sibling groups that stick together for life. Flocks of turkeys also have a strict social dominance structure, which can lead to aggressive conflicts

between birds. Since domestic turkeys are often kept in very large groups, hyper-aggression between turkeys can be a problem. Understanding the behavior of these birds is crucial to ensuring healthy, sustainable practices on the farm, and a delicious entrée at the Thanksgiving table this year.

Citizen receives letter from county about road study

LEXINGTON — And the conversation about the safety on Lovell Road continues.

Joe Ackerman, a Lexington resident who lives on Lovell Road, has previously relayed his concern about traffic safety near his home to the council on numerous occasions. At the Nov. 1 City Council meeting, he presented a letter from Anoka County

Engineer Douglas W. Fischer.

The letter was in response to a petition from residents on Lovell and a formal resolution by the council in support of those residents, both of which were submitted to Fischer by City Administrator Bill Petracek. The 26 residents who signed the petition wanted the county to place permanent solar-powered radar detectors on Lovell Road, after a seemingly successful trial period.

Fischer said that the county will perform a safety

evaluation of the road, which will include a review of the signing and striping of the highway and sight distance evaluations, lighting, pedestrian issues, roadway geometry and coordination with law enforcement.

“After the evaluation is complete, we will review this study with city staff and implement the resultant changes,” said Fischer. Ackerman thanked the council for its help and council members said it was great news.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lexington City Council took the following action at its Nov 1 meeting: • The council conducted two public hearings regarding the Landings of Lexington project. One was to approve a resolution authorizing a housing program to finance a multifamily housing project and approving issuance and sale of multifamily housing revenue refunding notes pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 462C. The other public hearing was held to take comments on the vacation of a public utility easement on Lexington Park, Block 1, Lot 8 to make room for the new plat. There was no public comment at either hearing.

The council later approved resolution 18-28 about the subject of a housing program to finance a multifamily housing project and approving issuance and sale of multifamily housing revenue refunding notes and resolution 18-29 to vacate the easement of Lot 8, Block 1 for Landings of Lexington. The easement will consist of a five-foot strip of land approximately 125 feet from the front of the lot line.

• The council approved ordinance 18-01 amending city code 11.34, dimensional requirements -schedule of zoning district regulations for area, bulk, placement and land use intensity, as recommended by the Planning and

Zoning Commission.

• Approved a development agreement for the Landings of Lexington. Mayor Mark Kurth said, “This is kind of a big deal.”

• Approved resolution 18-30 to deed from the city of Lexington assigning the Lovell Building at 4175 Lovell Road to Lexington Leased Housing Associates 1, LLLP (Dominion Acquisitions, LLC.) Ryan Lunderby of Dominion Acquisitions, said, “There were a few wrinkles along the way. We’re on track to close on the property (Friday, Nov.9). Asbestos abatement will take from 20-30 days. There will be a groundbreaking ceremony in about

30 days.” The mayor and council were invited to attend and the mayor was asked to prepare something to say.

• At a previous meeting, the council approved Mohammed Elsharkawy for the permanent, part-time, maintenance position that was held

by Bob Hunt who was resigning his position on Nov. 30. That has since changed, and Hunt will continue in the position into the foreseeable future.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov.ember 15, at City Hall.

NAMES IN THE NEWS Four Cub Scouts bridged from Cub Scout Pack 432 into Troop 136 on Nov. 5. Three of them (Ellie Russell, Luke Peterson and Trenton Johnson) earned their Arrow of Light, which is the highest achievement in Cub Scouts.

Russell is the first girl in Cub Scout Pack 432 to achieve the Arrow of Light. She joined Cub Scouts this summer when Cub Scout Pack 432 officially started welcoming girls. She has now completed Cub Scouts and will officially register with Troop 136 in February. At that time, the Boys Scouts program will change its name to Scouts BSA and officially welcome girls to register with a troop. Each unit can choose to welcome girls or remain all boys; Pack 432 and Troop 136 have both chosen to welcome girls.

Cub Scout Pack 432 currently has five girls registered and expects more to be joining in the coming months. Troop 136 also has two girls who will register in February.

DOG GONE READING: Therapy dog builds children’s confidence FROM PAGE 1

“I saw the request (from the library) and thought it was such a good fit for Pippy. She loves kids and I love the idea of a nonjudgmental reading practice partner,” Erickson said.

The Dog Gone Reading program dates back to when the Hardwood Creek Library opened its doors in 2007. Over the years there have been different therapy dogs, but Pippy has fi lled the role since last summer.

“My favorite thing is seeing the kids light up when they see her. She has become a little celebrity. Her pictures are on all the computer screens and there are posters and fl iers with her all over,” Erickson said. “I love seeing their excitement about her, and of course it is a proud mama moment watching her be an awesome dog.”

Pippy is so popular, the two-hour window is almost always booked solid.

“A dog is nonjudgmental, they are not correcting you: you just get to read to them. They soak it all in and are grateful for the time,” said Librarian Suzanne Yoch. “It is really sweet, a lot of the kids try to pick out books that a dog would like.

There are a lot of children who don’t have pets, so getting that exposure and being around an animal is really important.”

Erickson added, “We have had readers run the gamut from very advanced to kids who are working on it and struggling. Pippy has no ability to tell the difference between the two, she is just happy to spend time with them. She is a good listener for kids who might be nervous about working on their reading skills.”

Pam Lauderbaugh, of Lino Lakes, regularly attends the program with her 7-year-old son James and her 1-year-old daughter Harper.

“Especially at his age right now, he is supposed to read 20 minutes every night. A lot of his schoolwork and at-home time is spent learning how to read,” she explained. “This

Every other Friday morning, she also visits Phoenix Alternatives Inc. (PAC) in White Bear Lake, a nonprofit organization that serves people with developmental disabilities.

In a cozy room in Ramsey County Library – Shoreview, a group of knitters gather and create handmade masterpieces to touch people in need as the weather turns chillier.

Knitting for Good was started by Shoreview resident Teresa Boyer last fall; the loosely organized group meets at the library Thursday evenings. Newcomers are always welcome.

This fall, the knitters have been making hats for Hats for the Homeless, which will be delivered to shelters primarily in the Twin Cities.

The group is also making items to sell at the Friends of the Ramsey County Library’s annual fundraiser.

So far, the group knitted 74 baby hats for the American Heart Association; 66 hats and booties and a blanket for Jack’s Basket, which supports children born with Down syndrome; 55 items for Bundles of Love, which provides handmade items for newborns in need; six chemo caps; and five blankets to welcome refugees through the International Institute of Minnesota.

Boyer started the group after she talked with Shoreview Library Branch Manager Carol Jackson about potentially holding a one-time charity knitting event at the library. Instead, Jackson encouraged her to start an ongoing group. Boyer decided to do so because she craved a connection

to her community and wanted to do something to help her neighbors.

The group has a core of dedicated knitters who work on the projects at home as well, Boyer said. Many of the knitters live in the Shoreview area and enjoy both the social and giving aspects of the group.

North Oaks resident Susan Miller said she loves meeting other knitters and enjoys coming to the library in lieu of a shop because she isn’t tempted to buy $100 in yarn. “This is a safe place to come and knit,” she said.

“It’s fun to just knit for other people.”

“Your family has got all the hats, scarves, mittens and afghans … more than they could ever use,” added Shoreview resident Janice Hustvet.

Boyer said she loves knitting for babies, especially those who are in need. She wrote a knitting pattern book 15 years ago, Nursery Rhyme Knits.

Shoreview resident Kathy Giguere attended a recent evening after seeing a flyer in the library. She brought along an old knitting book, some needles and began to get back into the pastime she had tucked away long ago. “It’s been years since I knit,” she noted.

The group meets from 7 to 8 p.m.

Thursdays in the book club room. The group is open to all skill levels. “We encourage anyone who is interested to come check it out,” Boyer said.

People can also drop off donations of handmade items at the group.

Carbon monoxide poisonings rise when temperatures drop As temperatures fall in Minnesota, the number of people who become seriously ill from carbon monoxide poisoning goes up, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Illness and deaths from CO poisoning can be prevented when people take certain steps to prepare for the heating season, say state health and public safety officials.

Emergency room visits and hospitalizations from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are highest between November and February, when the use of fuel-burning heat sources increases people’s risk, according to information from the Minnesota Public Health Tracking Program at MDH. The number of emergency

room visits for carbon monoxide poisoning more than doubles between September and November and reaches a high in February, according to data from 2011 through 2015.

“Just as we turn back our clocks in the fall or put on the storm windows, part of preparing our homes for winter should be to make sure heat sources and carbon monoxide alarms are in good working order,” said Dan Tranter, supervisor of the Indoor Air program for MDH. “When the temperature drops, we begin to see an uptick in carbon monoxide poisonings.

A few simple steps can prevent many of them.”

To protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide, follow these safety tips: • Make sure you have working carbon

monoxide alarms. To detect potentially deadly conditions, CO alarms should be installed and regularly maintained in all households. In Minnesota, state law requires CO alarms in all single and multifamily Minnesota residences within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping. Replace your alarms every five years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.

• Have your furnace or wood-burning stove inspected annually.

Hire a professional to make sure it is working properly and vents properly outside the home.

• Never run a gasoline or propane heater or a grill (gas or charcoal) inside your home or in garage. Properly vent and maintain all fuelburning appliances.

Any heating system that burns fuel produces

carbon monoxide. Use battery-powered alarms where you have fuel burning devices but no electric outlets, such as tents, cabins, RVs and boats with enclosed cabins.

• Generators should be run at a safe distance (at least 20 feet) from the home. Never run a generator in the home or

garage, or right next to windows or doors.

• Never run a car in an enclosed space. Back your car into the driveway when you want to idle it.

• At high levels, carbon monoxide can cause death within minutes. Symptoms of overexposure to carbon monoxide include

headache, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and confusion. If you suspect you may be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, or your detector sounds an alarm, head outside immediately for fresh air and call 911.

Scientist warns dangers of climate change in Minnesota

WYOMING — If climate change continues at its current pace, Minnesota will eventually become unrecognizable.

That’s the message climate scientist Sam Potter tried to drive home to the audience at his Oct. 30 talk at Giese Memorial Library. Potter, who has a Ph.D. in atmospheric and oceanic science from Princeton University, delivered a presentation entitled “Three Future Minnesotas: A Future to Fear, A Future to Plan For and a Future to Fight For,” in which he detailed how global warming will likely impact the state.

A native Minnesotan, Potter said that he has long associated the state

with “bitterly cold winters, muggy (and) too-warm summers and crisp autumns and spring.” But that characteristic climate could soon change. The effects of global warming are more pronounced at northern latitudes, which means that among the 50 states, Minnesota will see the fastest and most exaggerated warming.

The effects of global warming have already taken effect in Minnesota, Potter said. On average, winters are now 4-5 degrees warmer and springs are 2-3 degrees warmer than they were 30 years ago. Though these increases may seem small, they have the power to wreak dramatic changes.

change continue unabated: longer and warmer summers, shorter and warmer winters, more precipitation and more frequent severe weather.

In the next 50 years, the state could see 30 fewer days with below-freezing temperatures and 30 more days with temperatures above 90 degrees. With this comes significant changes to farming practices, ecosystems and the ways in which people live.

“Warming will impact every aspect of Minnesota’s ecosystem,” Potter said. “What makes Minnesota’s natural world so remarkable and diverse is also what makes it so vulnerable to climate change.”

Though it is too late to prevent climate change from happening — “some degree of climate breakdown

is inevitable,” Potter said — there are ways to mitigate its impact. “The more we do to prevent climate change now, the better the future will be for all humanity and the planet,” said Potter.

Potter said that the U.S. must reduce its carbon emission level to zero by 2040, a lofty goal, though one that can be reached with sufficient effort.

“Every aspect of the world must be remade to no longer rely on fossil fuels,” he said. “The economy has to be re-thought to no longer rely on overconsumption and waste.”
