It is no surprise that the holiday season is going to look very different this year.

The restrictions are everchanging, so families need to remain flexible and try to fi nd ways to celebrate while keeping the ones they love safe.

When a north metro family heard temperatures were going to be in the 70s earlier this month, they sprang into action to coordinate an early, safe Thanksgiving celebration with family members.

White Bear Lake resident Corinna Morse, an eighth-grade counselor at Centennial Middle School, said she wanted to fi nd a way to celebrate to cheer up her parents, Peggy Hayden, 78, and Dave Hayden, 81, who live in Stillwater. In addition to the risks inherent because of their age, Peggy is also in a high-risk category due to an auto immune disease.

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Centennial School Board took the following action at its Nov. 9 meeting: • Heard from Superintendent Brian Dietz, who shared that the district received a grant for outreach efforts at the Landings of Lexington apartment complex.

• Provided an update on the district’s COVID-19 data. Visit www.isd12.org/ covid-19-information/ dashboard for the latest numbers, which are updated every Monday.

• Appointed members to the Materials Review Committee for 2020-21. Committee members serve on a yearly basis.

Members include: Laura Gordon, Jason O’Conner, Sarah Letko, Michelle Howard and Caleb Drexler Booth. Two parents still need to be appointed to the committee.

• Approved the American Indian Education bylaws for 2020-21. Federal legislation requires school districts annually approve bylaws of the American Indian Education Program parent committee.

• Presented and

approved the 2019-20 annual audit. The district received an unmodified, or clean, opinion on its fi nancial statements and there were no material weaknesses or instances of noncompliance reported on the internal control or compliance reports.

• Recognized Centennial Elementary as one of eight schools in the state and 367 schools in the nation to be selected as a Blue Ribbon School this year. Principal Kathy Kaiser told board members about the achievement and thanked the school board, superintendent and district administration for all of their support.

• Heard from Activities Director Brian Jamros, who recapped the fall sports season.

“We are dealing with everything as it comes … As we see the numbers uptick, we continue to be extremely cautious.

We will continue to make the best decisions for the health and well-being of our students,” he said.

• Approved a resolution establishing combined polling places for next year. The 2017 Legislature required that by Dec. 31 of each year, school boards must designate by

resolution combined polling places. The combined polling places designated in the resolution are the polling places for the following calendar year, unless a change is made pursuant to M.S. 204B.175 in the case of an emergency or because a polling place has become unavailable. If the school district fails to adopt the resolution, it will have to use all polling places adopted by the cities or towns located in the school district for any general or special election conducted by the school district in that next calendar year.

• Held the second reading and adopted four policy changes, including: No. 419, which deals

with a tobaccofree environment; No. 516, which addresses student medication; No. 601, which deals with district curriculum and instruction goals; and No. 607, which addresses organization of grade levels.

The policy changes reflect statutory requirements that the Legislature enacted throughout the 2020 session as well as other federal and state requirements, all recommended by the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA).

The next Centennial School Board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Students in grades 6-12 shifted back to distance learning Nov. 12. The Centennial School District has now announced that students in grades K-5 will join them Nov. 30. A message was sent out to families earlier this month that read in part, “After meeting with the Regional Support Team—staff from the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Education, and Anoka County Department of Health—the recommendation was made to move students in grades K-5 to distance learning due to the growth in COVID cases at our schools combined with the rising cases in Anoka County.”

Students will not be in school Nov. 23-Nov. 25, as those are designated by the state as distance learning prep days for staff. Students will have Nov. 26 and 27 off for Thanksgiving. Nov. 30 will be the first day of distance learning for all students in grades K-5. Students will not be divided into group 1 and group 2.

The Regional Support Team projects that COVID-19 cases will continue to rise. Distance learning will remain in place until the case numbers decrease and the district has received direction from the Regional Support Team to safely return to the hybrid learning model.

Both teachers and Superintendent Brian Dietz noted that they don’t think education will return to where it was before the pandemic.

“The pandemic has changed the way schools operate,” Dietz said.

But sometimes with change comes new inspiration. “Sometimes the knock against education is we don’t change with the times as quickly as we should.

We get stuck in ruts,” said Rasmussen. “The pandemic has pushed us to really look at what we’ve been doing.

Taking what was good — those connections — and combining that with technology and our creativity and our collaboration is really transforming how we’re going to teach for many years down the road.

There’s no doubt in my mind this experience has made us stronger educators. We’re

“I’m really proud of our students,” said Rasmussen. “They’ve lost prom, homecoming, graduations last year … I’m so thankful they are resilient. They are just taking and making the best out of a horrible situation. They are rolling with it.”

technology has been a huge player in 2020 education, it brings with it certain barriers for students and teachers.

“The lack of nonverbal communication is a barrier,” said Robinson.

“If the camera’s not on, it’s hard to create a culture of faith and community space via Google meet. It’s hard enough to do it in a classroom. It takes a long time for kids to share in the classroom, and you’re building relationships, students talking to each other. Building that culture has been more difficult.”

Another big challenge for teachers has been time. “Giving feedback, even chatting with a student is time consuming, and if you multiply that times 147 students,” said Robinson, “that’s 12 hours to assess a piece of writing that is short. I’ve tried to do videos, then save the video upload and email the kids in a message.

It all takes time. People don’t understand how much time everything is taking.”

The announcement that Centennial students in grades K-12 will shift from the hybrid learning model to distance learning resulted, unsurprisingly, in conflicting emotions within the community.

The change is hard for Centennial parents and students, as well as the teachers.

Jessica Robinson, a Centennial English teacher since 1998 known as “JRob” to her students, said the reason teachers go into teaching is because of the kids. “Now they are further away from us than they were,” she said, “and it’s hard work to catch back up to them.”

Robinson explained that she and all her colleagues miss the young people in the actual classroom.

Robinson has 147 students she teaches in her 9th and 12th grade classes.

Robinson said the staff has pulled together, but that everyone is experiencing some sort of anxiety. “All of our mental health is being affected by the pandemic,” she said. “It’s an added challenge. The kids are needing that oneon-one attention, but now that’s difficult to supply.”

Shane Rasmussen, a Centennial math teacher since 1993, is also working to adjust while maintaining the same positivity. “Connections are the foundation to good teaching; it’s the reason we all teach.

And this learning model is challenging. It’s not

just about teaching curriculum. Our teaching is much more than that.

It’s being mindful of social and emotional needs.”

Centennial teachers have been prepping and pivoting full time since the pandemic hit.

This latest change is another challenge, but one they are ready to meet. Resilience is the word of the year for 2020, and while the teachers are living it moment to moment, they say no one is more resilient than the students.

“It breaks my heart we’re not in the (high school) building,” said Rasmussen, “but I’m amazed at the positivity of the seniors. They are rolling with it. It makes us focus on things we can do something about.

We can still do a lot, even though it might not look like how we want it to.

We’re moving forward, and there’s hope ahead.”

There are a lot of moving parts in the school system to make this work. Robinson said she is grateful her subject can translate to online instruction easier than other topics. Yet, tasks that were once easy have become cumbersome.

While Robinson can pull a PDF of a book they are studying online, there are certain things that are lost.

“When you look at the skills of reading, writing and communication, it’s now all online. Just to get a paper copy to students, logistically, has been a nightmare.”

Staying home for the holidays

W

hen COVID-19 first made its way to Minnesota, I was hopeful that it would more or less be gone by the time summer rolled around. The thought of it lingering into the fall, much less through the holiday season, was inconceivable. But now, nearly nine months later, the worst of it seems to be in front of, rather than behind us, and beloved holiday celebrations are set to be another pandemic-induced cancellation. We all seem to be faced with the same moral quandary: What are the holidays without the people you love? And yet why risk gathering when it poses such a risk?

If this were an ordinary year, I’d be flying to Michigan to spend the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays (and my birthday, on Dec. 23) with nearly all of my immediate and extended family—my parents, sisters, brother-in-law, grandparents, aunts, Between uncles and cousins. But, of course, 2020 has been anything but ordinary, and the Lines instead of buying plane tickets and trying to pack as lightly as possible Elizabeth Callen to avoid paying for a checked bag, I’m trying to figure out how to bring some semblance of normalcy to this year’s celebration, despite the fact that I’ll be spending it solo.

Thankfully, I already have some practice. Last year, I opted to spend Thanksgiving alone, partially because I felt like I didn’t have the time, energy or money to travel, but mostly because my parents spent it vacationing in Hawaii, so I was left to my own devices. It was the first time I’ve spent the holiday by myself, which I was somewhat apprehensive about, especially as someone who gets lonely easily and looks forward to big family gatherings year-round.

However, I ended up finding a surprising amount of fulfi llment in my own quiet little celebration. I slept in, finished a book I had been struggling to find the time for, FaceTimed my parents, cooked a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for one and ate it while watching a movie. I missed my family, but the day to myself was a good one all the same, a much-welcomed respite in the middle of a chaotic time in my life.

I was hopeful that 2020 would bring me the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving alongside my family like normal, but unfortunately, it has not. I will miss them all again this year, but am trying not to spend too much time wishing I could change things that are out of my control. Instead, I am trying to control what I can: I can reduce my risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19 by staying home, I can still connect with my family and friends over Zoom, and—maybe best of all—I can cook precisely what I want to eat and don’t have to worry about hurting anyone’s feelings when I pass on the cranberry sauce or the Jello salad. It won’t be the same, and it will certainly be tinged with some sadness, but I think there is still some joy to be found despite it all.

Our individual choices have collective consequences—the chaos of 2020 has driven that home for me time and time again. As heartwrenching as it is to forgo cherished rituals and traditions, missing out on them this one year is far from the worst case scenario. Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving in October. COVID-19 cases spiked shortly afterwards, and experts said that the holiday gatherings were to blame. Here in Minnesota and throughout the U.S., the virus is surging and in-person Thanksgiving celebrations threaten to cause an even greater spike.

Maybe by giving up the normalcy of the holidays this year, we can ensure that we’ll have more to give thanks for next year. Thanksgiving will roll around again. Michigan will still be there, and so too, I hope, will my loved ones. For now, I’ll make due on my own with my solo Thanksgiving dinner—and be sure to give my cat an extra hug.

I wish you and all those you love good health and as much happiness as you can find this Thanksgiving, however far apart you may be.

Social media gift exchange actually illegal pyramid scheme

“Secret Santa” among colleagues, friends and family can be fun. A gift exchange among online friends you haven’t met, though, could carry a hefty consequence. These gift exchanges, while they look like innocent fun, are really pyramid schemes – and are considered illegal.

The “Secret Sister” gift exchange campaign quickly became popular few years ago Movers and athrough Facebook Shakers posts promising participants would Better Business receive up to 36 Bureau gifts, in exchange for sending one gift. Each holiday season the scheme pops back up. A newer version of this scam revolves around exchanging bottles of wine; another suggests purchasing $10 gifts online.

How the scam works The scheme starts with a convincing invitation, either by email or social media, to sign up for what seems like a fun gift exchange.

All you must do is provide your name and address and personal information of a few additional friends, and tack this information on to a running list of people you’ve

never met on the internet. Next, it’s your turn to invite people to send a modest gift or bottle of wine to a stranger along with their friends, family and contacts.

The cycle continues, and you can be left with buying and shipping gifts for unknown individuals, in hopes that the favor is reciprocated by receiving the promised number of gifts in return. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen. Just like any other pyramid scheme, it relies on the recruitment of individuals and their participation to keep the scam afloat. Once people stop participating in the gift exchange, the gift supply stops as well, and leaves hundreds of disappointed people without their promised gifts.

It should be noted that pyramid schemes are illegal in the US and Canada. The U.S. Postal Inspection Services explains that these gift exchanges are considered a form of gambling and that participants could be subject to penalties such as jail time, fines or a lawsuit for mail fraud.

The next time someone promises a bounty of gifts or cash by mail, email, or social media, BBB recommends the following: • Ignore it! Keep in mind that pyramid schemes are international. Chain letters involving money or valuable items are illegal. Stop and ask, is it worth breaking the law or risking the exposure of your personal information?

• Report social media posts. If

you receive an invitation to join a pyramid scheme disguised as a gift exchange on social media, report it. You can report these Facebook posts by clicking in the upper righthand corner and selecting “report post” or “report photo.”

• Never give your personal information to strangers. This will open you up to identity theft and other scams.

• Be wary of false claims. Some pyramid schemes try to win your confidence by claiming they’re legal and endorsed by the government. These imposter schemes are false as the government will never endorse illegal activity. No matter what they claim, pyramid schemes will not make you rich. You will receive little to no money back on your “investment” or gift exchange.

Stoltz announced SPIRE will donate $100,000 to The Salvation Army to help kick off its “Rescue Christmas” campaign. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, when much of the world was focused on the presidential election, Morse’s family gathered to enjoy the beautiful warm day.

The family gathered outdoors at Morse’s home and enjoyed brined turkey prepared on a Kamando grill along with stuffi ng, squash, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish and — of course — pumpkin pie. As they enjoyed their meal, the warm temperatures and no bugs, many people walked by their celebration and asked, “What time is dinner?”

One thing that did not stray from tradition? The celebratory toast. Every year, Peggy reads a poem that was written by her grandfather.

“We decided to focus on the positive and be thankful for our loved ones and current health,” Morse said.

Early Childhood offers support for families online As things continue to change day by day, Centennial Early Childhood is adapting how it supports both children and families.

Not only does childhood screening look a bit different, but Early Childhood is also changing up materials it provides to families and offering an online option for preschool.

Minimizing points of contact for screening

Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential health or developmental problems in young children who may need a health assessment, diagnostic assessment or educational evaluation.

Screening in early childhood supports children's readiness for kindergarten and promotes health and development. Screening includes vision and hearing, height and weight, immunization review, large and small muscles, thinking, language and communication skills, as well as social and emotional development.

Free screening, done when the child is between the ages of 3 and 5, required before the child enters kindergarten.

“The goal with screening is to identify any health or developmental concerns before kids start school, and it allows for appropriate early assistance as early as possible,” said Early Childhood/School Readiness Coordinator Sarah Holmboe.

“It is a really great tool for families.

People can get the help they need early enough so that by the time their kids get to elementary school, they are all set and ready to go; there's no lingering concerns they have to worry about.”

In a typical year, Early Childhood offers mass screening days with screeners and nurses on site.

Families rotate through to different stations. The program was advised by the Minnesota Department of Education to perform as much of the process remotely as possible. While now the developmental portion of the screening is still carried out in person and one on one, the other screening elements are done over the phone. If a child has not had their hearing or vision checked at the doctor, Early Childhood can provide a referral.

Holmboe said she recognizes that some families may be putting screening off because of the pandemic. “If families are wanting to put it off just because of COVID, we still encourage them to get screened because earlier intervention is always better,” she said. “We are following all of those protocols to make sure that it's clean and safe for families.”

If families have concerns regarding their child’s development, or they can’t get their child in for screening right away, they can visit helpmegrowmn.org to fi ll out a referral form in the meantime. That will expedite the process and get families connected with the school district and other resources they may need. Families can visit www.isd12. org/ecs for more information about screening or to make an appointment, or they can call 763-792-6120.

Early Childhood offers take-home kits, resources for parents

Thanks to a $3,000 grant from Anoka County made available through CARES Act Funds, Early Childhood is assembling free takehome kits as well as a parent speaker series.

“We are seeing an increased need for more remote-learning options for both parents and children. We

know that parents are facing a lot of concerns, stress and uncertainty with COVID and are looking for more support for themselves and how to support their kids,” Holmboe explained. “We were looking for some creative ways to stay connected with families in the community, especially those families that decide that they don’t feel comfortable coming in person, or new families that don't even know that we have these services available.”

Once a month starting in 2021, families will be able to reserve a take-home kit. Every kit will have a different theme, including: literacy, math, science, social-emotional, gross and fine motor skills, and music and movements/creativity. Families can pick up the kits on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Kits will also be distributed to some apartment complexes, manufactured homes and area day care facilities.

Beginning this week, Early Childhood will also kick off an online speaker series for families who have young children. Presentations will address a variety of topics, including early literacy, myths of parenthood, self-care and stress management, raising anti-racist children, managing big emotions and screen time.

Some presentations will be offered during the day, and others at night. Holmboe said she hopes the presentations will also be recorded so families can catch up on what they missed. “Our goal is really just to support parents and give them an opportunity to hop online, to listen in and to get some more information for themselves to support their kids,” she said.

Early Childhood offers online preschool option

Since the end of September, Early Childhood has offered an online preschool option. Up to this point, that has included an online session once a week with a teacher and classmates, but Holmboe said the district hopes to expand that three times a week.

Online sessions include story and circle time, music and interactive activities.

In addition to those online sessions, families are also given some lessons they can do on their own time each week.

“We have literacy, math and science activities, creative art, socialemotional, and that is all based on the creative curriculum that we use. We really wanted to mimic what we are doing in a normal, inperson preschool classroom, but just adapting it to work at home,” Holmboe said.

“The goal is to help kids get some of that education, support and social interaction. We know that it looks a little bit different online, but being able to talk with the teacher and talk with their friends online and then to be able to do those activities at home on their own time has been really fun.”

In a recent survey sent out by the district, a parent said, “My daughter loves the Google Meets, and is always excited when I tell her she gets to ‘go to school’ on the Google Meet days.”

Another parent said, “We like the structure to our day/week and the social skills being developed even through online class.”

Another parent noted that the online preschool makes her child feel

as though she is still a part of a school program.

Governor halts prep sports for 4 weeks

Gov. Tim Walz has ordered a fourweek shutdown of youth and high school sports starting last Saturday — ending what remained of the football and volleyball seasons and delaying the start of winter sports practices until Dec. 18 at the earliest.

The governor announced Thursday that he is also shutting down bars, restaurants and fitness centers for the same period in response to an accelerating increase in COVID-19 cases in the state.

"It's not easy and it's not fair but it's a sacrifice we need to make,'' Walz said.

The football and volleyball seasons, which started six weeks late after originally being slated for spring, are now over.

Centennial’s football season ended Friday evening with a second-round playoff game at Stillwater, with the third and final round canceled. The Cougar volleyball season ended with a match against Spring Lake Park on

Friday evening. There would have been one more match, then section playoffs. All fall state tournaments had already been canceled.

Cougars pummel Lakeville North 36-14 in section; 1 game left

It took six games for Centennial to get its offense fully in gear but it’s been humming for two straight games now, and the Cougars have advanced to the second round of sectionals.

Quarterback Elijah Ward ran for four touchdowns as Centennial thumped Lakeville North 36-14 at home Tuesday evening in the first round of Class 6A at home.

The Cougars (3-5) were 1-5 and averaging 15 points per game before they blew past Osseo 35-22 in the conference finale and kept the scoreboard blinking steadily against Lakeville North (3-4). “We played really well. Our offensive and defensive coordinators came up with a great game plan and the kids responded,� coach Mike Diggins said.

Elijah Ward agreed: “We knew we just had to do what we were told and we’d be all right.�

Diggins said the Cougars were “the more physical team — we were hitting hard,� against a big, strong Lakeville North lineup. He added that the defense had a pretty good idea what plays were coming, due to the coaches’ game plan.

The Cougars finished the season Friday night playing at Stillwater (4-2). That pairing would have been a semifinal game on Saturday, with finals the following Friday to close the season, but Gov. Tim Walz shut down high school sports for four weeks starting Saturday.

Elijah Ward has run for 13 touchdowns, including seven in the last the last three games. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior rumbled for 138 yards in 23 carries.

He scored from five, 25, five and four yards, the first three in the first half for a 22-0 lead.

Lakeville North got on the board with Najee Nelson’s two-yard run in the third period, which ended 21-7.

Isaak Ankrum broke away for a 57-yard touchdown for Centennial with 8:33 left in the game on his only carry of the game. The Panthers made it 29-14 on Gunnar Swetala’s four-yard score with 5:30 left, but the Cougars shut the door with another march capped

by Elijah Ward’s last touchdown.

The Cougars were 5-for-5 on conversions as Ed Nowacke kicked four of them and Lance Liu ran for a two-pointer. Liu was also a force all game from scrimmage with with 113 yards in 15 carries.

An impressive defensive effort was anchored by linemen Chase Granzow, Zach Frank, Ankrum and Isaiah Ward. “Our defense played really well as a whole and those linemen were dominant,� Diggins said.

The coach regretted the kids having to play their next game just three days later — especially with top-seeded Stillwater on a nine-day break after a first-round bye. Such a brief break between games, probably unprecedented in prep football, is just one last unusual, inconvenient aspect of this most unusual season wracked by a historic pandemic. Some teams

elected not to play under the circumstances. “We thought about that,� Diggins said. “But we figured it was best to let the kids play one last game.�

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • While on patrol in the 1600 block of Birch Street Nov. 10, an officer observed a vehicle strike a cat that ran into traffic. The owner of the cat was notified.

• An officer was dispatched on a stolen vehicle report in the 8000 block of I-35E Nov. 10. The investigation is ongoing.

• While on patrol in the area of 20th Avenue and Birch Street Nov. 11, an officer located a vehicle in the ditch.

After an investigation, the driver was arrested for DWI and later charged with DWI-related charges.

• An officer was dispatched on a call regarding a vehicle that was damaged while a resident was snowblowing a driveway in the 7000 block of Sunset Avenue Nov. 11. The involved parties

exchanged information.

• Officers were dispatched on a call regarding someone hunting too close to a home in the 7500 block of Jeanne Drive Nov. 11. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a call of a single-vehicle personal injury accident in the 1900 block of Birch Street Nov. 11. The driver was subsequently arrested on DWI-related charges.

• An employee of a business in the 6000 block of Hodgson Road reported that a vehicle taken for a test drive had not been returned Nov. 11. The vehicle was entered as stolen; the investigation is ongoing.

• An officer was dispatched on a call of a possibly impaired driver at a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Nov. 12. The officer located the

driver, who was arrested for DWI and booked into the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers were called to a business in the 7100 block of Otter Lake Road for a reported fight in the parking lot Nov. 13. The male and female had left and were later located by a neighboring law enforcement agency. Both individuals were cited for disorderly conduct due to their actions at the business.

• Officers responded to a 911 open line regarding a domestic situation within the city Nov. 13. The officer investigated and later arrested an adult female for assault and interfering with a 911 call.

• Officers responded to a delayed residential burglary report in the 700 block of Eagle Court Nov. 15. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a trailer theft in the 8000 block of 20th Avenue Nov. 16. The incident was documented and is under investigation.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Galaxy Drive in Circle Pines Nov. 12 on a suspicious activity report. Information was collected.

• Officers were dispatched to the 1

block of South Pine Drive in Circle Pines on a theft report Nov.13.

• A theft was reported in the 7200 block of LaValle Drive in Centerville Nov. 13.

• Officers arrested a male in the 1 block of Pleasant View Lane in Circle Pines Nov. 14 on an outstanding warrant.

The male was taken to the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers were dispatched to a welfare check in the 1 block of Shepherd Court in Circle Pines Nov. 15. The subject of the welfare check advised that she had taken a package from a doorstep. The victim of the theft was notified.

• Police were dispatched to the intersection of Lake Drive and Pointcross Drive in Circle Pines Nov. 16 for a personal injury accident.

• An officer located a suspicious vehicle in the 1900 block of Main Street in Centerville Nov. 17. The officer transported the adult male to another location and gave him a verbal warning for suspicious activity.

• A theft was reported in the 8900 block of Arona Avenue in Lexington Nov. 17. The caller advised that an unknown suspect damaged the holiday decorations in his yard overnight. The estimated loss is $50.
