Lions brighten holidays for veterans and homeless BY SARAH KNIEFF CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Cards, kits and Lions, oh my! The Shoreview/Arden Hills Lions Club met at Shore 96 on Tuesday, Nov. 13, to collaborate on two projects for this holiday season. Judy Zewers, president of the Shoreview/ Arden Hills Lions Club, explained that it was “an in-house service night where we are doing a couple of different service projects to help out the community.” The first project the club worked on was for
Stepping Stone Emergency Housing in Blaine, a nonprofit organization that serves as a homeless shelter for youth and adults in Anoka County. Volunteers helped gather and pack personal hygiene materials to make kits for those in need. “We asked some hotels in the area to sponsor, and they donated some of their items and we hope to have quite a few items to help out (this holiday season),” Martha Johnson, club vice president, noted. Local sponsors include: HealthPartners Dental, NorthView Dental, Country Inn, Hilton

Children at the Centennial Early Childhood Center learned all they could about trees last Monday and Tuesday when a volunteer
from the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardner program visited. Three- to 5-year-olds learned about a variety of things, all related to trees ... oxygen, roots,
medicine, maple syrup, bark and wildlife. Early Childhood Family Education Coordinator Sarah Holmboe explained, “We use
CENTERVILLE—The City Council unanimously accepted the results of the Nov. 6 general election at its Nov. 14 regular meeting and welcomed returning council members. Mayor Jeff Paar was re-elected with 1,351 votes, and although he theoretically ran unopposed, 72 write-in votes were cast against him. Former Council Member Michelle Lakso will return to council after winning the ranked voting for one of the vacant two positions with 1,001 votes. Lakso served on the City Council from 2005-2009. Incumbent Council Member D. Love will return to council after winning 909 votes. He has served on council since 2009. Greg Nohner won 491 votes, and writein candidates took 26 votes. Write-in candidates included current Council Member Steve King, who elected not to run. “People must like you if you're still getting votes when you're not running,” Paar said. City Clerk Teresa Bender crunched the numbers and announced that 2,488 voters had registered by the opening of polls at 7 a.m. Nov. 6. By the end of the day, 2,072 people had voted in Centerville.That number included 424 accepted absentee ballots and 149 additional voters who registered on election day.
