Golden Lake Elementary fourth grader Emily Arnett reads to 2-year-old Bucky during the Read to a Dog program at the Centennial Library. BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR
The Read to a Dog program at Centennial Library could not have come at a better time for Golden Lake Elementary fourth grader Emily Arnett, who just lost her family dog.
The program has been offered on and off for the past several years, but started back up this fall after Lino Lakes resident Amanda McGivern contacted the library. McGivern owns two rescue pups, 3-year-old Lucilla, a Great Pyrenees/collie/Lab mix, and 2-year-old Bucky, a shepherd/ husky/“super mutt.” Both are
certified therapy dogs. Lucilla just recently passed her certification test. Bucky, Lucilla and McGivern attend ongoing training classes at Total Recall in Hugo and belong to Helping and Healing Paws, an organization located in Buffalo,
With Lance Liu rushing for a school record 290 yards, the Centennial Cougars plowed through their playoff opener with a 35-14 conquest of Eastview on Friday night, capped by a wild fourth quarter. Liu carried 19 times and averaged 15.3 yards while scoring three touchdowns. His 290-yard burst lifted him to 1,026 on 173 carries for the season (with eight touchdowns), and broke the single-game record of 265 set by Nick Torres in 2008. “It was our usual veer option stuff, and we did a nice job up front clearing holes,” said coach Mike Diggins. The Cougars (5-4), seeded third in their quadrant, advanced to the second round of the 32-team Class 6A playoffs against No. 2 St. Michael-Albertville (5-4) there Friday, 7 p.m. “We ran our bread and butter plays and I was finally able to break some long ones,” said Liu, 5-foot11, 200-pound senior, whose longest runs were 51, 52, 56, and 35 yards. “The way they were lined up, if I got past the linebackers I was gone.” Liu, whose previous high was 204 in a win over Stillwater last year, would have surpassed 300 if not for a speedy Eastview defensive back, Sam Weinhaus. “He caught me two or three times,” said Liu.

Bakery and coffee shop set to open soon in Blaine BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER
The husband and wife team of Francois and Debbie Zongo is on a mission to open their second Kingdom Baking shop, in Blaine. Kingdom Baking was first located in Lino Lakes from 2014 to 2016 until the building was sold. The couple decided to move their shop to a property they own in Blaine.
“This property used to be a gas station, and it was pretty run down, so we had it demolished and started from scratch,” Debbie said. “We started construction last year and it's been an ordeal, but if all goes according to plan, we'd like to open sometime in December.” Francois, the pastry chef for Kingdom Baking, began baking approximately 20 years
ago when he lived in New York. “He was always baking for family and friends, and his favorite thing to bake is croissants,” Debbie said. “We've been to Paris and his croissants are just as good as you get in Paris.” Besides croissants, Kingdom Baking will offer pastries, cakes, bars, soups and salads — served with chunk of baguette, sandwiches and ice
cream. Homemade soups on the menu are chicken and wild rice, chicken noodle and roasted tomato basil. Sandwiches on the menu are the French veggie, gourmet grilled cheese, grilled cheese, tuna and turkey bacon. Specialty salads include the Niçoise (nee-SWAZ) salad — mixed greens with SEE KINGDOM BAKING, PAGE 8
