Police befriend elementary students BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

CIRCLE PINES — Golden Lake Elementary has nine mentors from the community, five of which are sporting a Centennial Lakes Police Department badge. Someone driving by the school last Thursday might have been concerned when they saw five squad cars parked outside of the school. However, nothing was wrong. Five members of CLPD dropped by the school to spend some time with their young students — talking, playing games and building creations out of Legos. The mentorship program was implemented at the school back in 2001, and staff served as mentors. As the program quickly grew over the years, high school students and other community members also become mentors. This year there are 130 high school mentors. “The vision is for every child at school to have a positive adult relationship. It is not replacing other relationships they already have, it is just adding another adult positive relationship into their world,” explained lead teacher Eric Nelson. “They are being referred for a reason. A positive relationship is going to have a positive impact long term.” Sergeant Bill Jacobson, Officer Andy Dixon, Officer Katy Mannin, Community Service Officer Logan Larson and Community Service Officer Georgia Carlson all drop by the school at least once a week to spend time with their students. “One of the most important things is seeing police in a non-enforcement way. ‘Nerve-wracking’ earthquake a 1st for Minnesota family in Alaska BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

After living in Minnesota his entire life, former Circle Pines resident Brad Johnson had no idea what was happening when the ground began to shake beneath him while he was up on a ladder fixing an airplane. Johnson, a 1995 Centennial grad, and his family moved to Wasilla, Alaska, in July. Johnson is an airplane mechanic for Tailwind Aviation. Before moving, Johnson, wife Joanna and their 8-year-old son Sam lived in Park Rapids. “My wife, son and I are all Minnesotans, so we have never experienced an earthquake before. Of

course, we have read and heard about the big one in 1964 when they had the 9.2 earthquake here,” he said, referring to when Alaska suffered the strongest earthquake in U.S. history, known as both the Good Friday and Great Alaska earthquake. The storm caused widespread damage, destroying a major part of downtown Anchorage, and killed more than 100 people, including 13 in California due to a tsunami. “We have little earthquakes here all the time, but we have never felt anything. It was really an eye-opener for us,” he said. At 8:29 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck 8 miles outside of Anchorage, SEE EARTHQUAKE, PAGE 19
