A new oldie: Lexington’s fire station BY SARA MARIE MOORE STAFF WRITER

LEXINGTON — Lexington’s fire station just got a facelift. The building, built in 1973 by firefighters and their construction-savvy friends, had undergone little maintenance since

that time. The building was bulging on the outside surface due to water trapped inside the wall’s concrete cinder blocks. The water caused the blocks to expand in winter, leaving bubbling paint and white film on the outside of the station. The

roof was also leaking. “It had been degrading for years and years and years,” said Mark Vanderbloomer, assistant fire chief. But it is fixed now. A new roof, new windows and new insulated siding were installed. The siding is EIFS, a

multilayer siding with an insulation board and drainage plane to eliminate trapped water. The finish resembles stucco. The building also went through Americans with Disabilities

CIRCLE PINES — Turkey together. In 2013, Forrest and Nancy Gregory weren’t sure what to do for Thanksgiving. The couple did not have extended family in the area and decided to partner with area churches to put on a Thanksgiving meal for people in the community who may be in the same situation. “We thought the holiday would be a lot brighter if we were spending it with other people,” said Nancy. “I think we had a total of 100 people that first year.” About half of those were volunteers. The meal continued the next year and about 120 people showed up. This year 85 came. The lower number is probably due to the fact the Forrests delivered 60 turkeys in the community the week before, so people were able to have their own Thanksgiving meal at home. The event was held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Circle Pines.

Members from other area churches also volunteered. Funding was provided by Thrivent Financial. The Gregory’s ministry, YouthWay Ministries, is also a sponsor. “We have a youth center in Centennial Square [Manufactured] Home community in Blaine,” said Nancy. The ministry opened in 1998 and offers after-school homework help and a youth club. YouthWay Ministries also started a food ministry called Manna Market in 2008, which receives food donations from Second Harvest Heartland and redistributes them free of charge at the center. Manna Market has expanded to eight locations in the North Metro. About 65,000 meals a week are provided through the eight programs. And some of the food for the community Thanksgiving held at Our Savior’s was donated by Second Harvest and Manna Market. Individual donations and Thrivent’s grant provided the rest of the food needed for the holiday meal.
