Picture this: You are walking through the store fi lling up your cart with groceries when your 2-year-old starts throwing a tantrum in the middle of the aisle because you told them they can’t have the Baby Shark toy.

Jamie Waldvogel, a Lino Lakes mother of two, founded a consulting business named Behave Your Best that helps parents and early childhood educators learn how to deal with that situation before it even begins.

“Our purpose is to divert unwanted behavior as early as possible so they are not waiting for 2- and 4-yearolds to continue practicing those unwanted behaviors,” Waldvogel explained. “We are intervening earlier.”

Waldvogel has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in behavior analysis and therapy. For around 10 years, she worked for a company serving children who have autism.

While she was pregnant with her fi rst child, she decided she wanted to be around more to be a mother to her children and help others when she was able.

Behave Your Best was founded in 2011.What originally started as a parttime consulting business to help parents with potty training has completely transformed and grown into a team of consultants in Minnesota and Chicago.

“I am a woman of faith, and I realized that this is part of my journey of what I am supposed to be doing on this Earth,” Waldvogel said.

children of up to 12 years old. The idea is to be proactive and learn how to deal with unwanted behaviors before they become a big problem.

Behave Your Best works in homes with parents, but also child care centers, school districts, preschools, businesses and other organizations. The business serves families throughout the Twin Cities as far north as Hugo and as far east as Stillwater and Woodbury.

Problems can arise if a child doesn’t know how to tolerate “no,” has difficulty transitioning from something that is fun to something that is not so fun, or doesn’t want to follow instructions the fi rst time they are given.

“It is not that parents are doing something wrong, or bad, it is just that reacting to the problem isn’t going

to fi x the problem,” Waldvogel explained.

“The child has already used that behavior, so we are too late. We have to get ahead of it; we have to teach the child a different response to that situation.”

She added, “We teach parents that their child can only learn a new skill when they are at their best. If they are upset or frustrated with something, it isn’t going to work, that is not the time to teach. You wouldn’t try to teach them their ABC’s or 123’s if they are in the middle of a tantrum.”

Janine Ketchel, owner of Kindergardens Child Development Center in Hugo, said that is one of the main takeaways she and her staff have learned from working with Behave Your Best since 2013. “So many people — I was one of them — when a child is misbehaving, you sit down right afterward and talk to them about what they did and they are not hearing you,

because they are not wired that way. Their brain is tuning you out,” she said. “The best way is to practice.

You practice the piano to get better, you have to practice anything to get better. Practice teaching those social skills when they are open to learning.”

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES

Outgoing Mayor Jeff Reinert presents Rob Rafferty, mayor-elect, with his “city of Lino Lakes” gavel at Reinert’s last City Council meeting Dec. 23.

The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its Dec. 23 meeting: • Recognized Bruce Hanson, owner of Surfside Seaplane Base. The business will celebrate its 50-year anniversary in April. “I have a lot of respect for Bruce and what he does over there. It is truly something that makes Lino Lakes unique,” said Mayor Jeff Reinert.

• Approved an extension for planned unit development (PUD) final plan/final plat submittal for Nature’s Refuge.

Nature’s Refuge is a 61-lot single-family residential subdivision located north of Main Street and west of Lino Lakes Elementary School.

Preferred Builders Inc. is finalizing details regarding HOA documents and wetland management plans and has requested a second six-month extension. The developer was already granted an extension, which expires at the end of December. Preferred Builders will have to submit a complete PUD final plan/final plat by June 25, 2020.

• Approved 2020 labor agreements with AFSCME Local No. 2454, LELS Local No. 260 and IUOE Local No. 49. All agreements call for a 3% wage increase Jan. 1.

• Approved a 2020 compensation plan for nonunion employees, which is consistent with the other agreements reached with the unions.

• Authorized the public safety department to sell eight fi re pagers to the New Germany Fire Department for $125 each. Director of Public Safety John Swenson explained that those fi re pagers are no longer compatible with the county’s fi re paging system. He added that the reason the pagers are being sold for $75 less than the last sale is because these eight pagers do not have working chargers, which will cost $75 each.

• Accepted a $250 donation from a New Brighton resident for the K-9 unit.

• Held the second reading of an ordinance amending city code (Chapters 401 and 402) related to connection to municipal water, sewer

systems and private wells.

The amendment allows for installation of private wells subject to certain conditions. Property owners were previously required to hook up to city water (if available) if their well failed. The ordinance was approved and the council voted to dispense with the full reading of the ordinance.

• Approved a resolution allowing a private well to be constructed at 7109 Sunrise Drive.

• Postponed a resolution accepting quotes and awarding a construction contract for irrigation controller upgrades. The action item was postponed at the request of Councilman

Dale Stoesz, who wanted some more information before approving the item.

Councilman Michael Manthey wanted to be certain that postponing the item wouldn’t jeopardize project grant funding from the Rice Creek Watershed District. City Engineer Diane Hankee, of WSB, confi rmed that postponing the item would not affect grant dollars.

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Jan. 13, at City Hall. There will also be a council work session at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, in the Community Room.

Home Anoka Housing Collaborative and the Suburban Metro Area Continuum of Care, will start at sunset and end at sunrise the following day. Locations throughout the county, including homeless shelters, city streets and other known homeless encampments, will be canvassed in an attempt to interview people who are experiencing homelessness.

To get an accurate assessment of the extent of homelessness, each January the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires an annual PIT Count of people experiencing homelessness.

The count includes men, women and children who are living in shelters, on the street or in places not meant for human habitation, as well as individuals and families living with family or friends. The PIT is conducted so the county can identify what’s needed to help the homeless and to apply for housing and service programs.

The road is calling and I must go

I

am borrowing a headline from a former coworker who wrote a final column before leaving for graduate school in Montana. She paraphrased a quote from naturalist John Muir in a letter to his sister that read, “The mountains are calling and I must go.” I really liked that headline. Only I have replaced the word mountains with road. My apologies to Muir and any semblance of plagiarism.

After 13 years with Press Publications and three years as editor of the White Bear Press, I am retiring from the world of full-time work.

My days at the Press started as a Feeling part-time proof reader. That lead to Inspired doing obits and student news, which into a staff writer position. I’ve Debra Neutkens grew worked on the Quad Community Press, the Forest Lake Press, The Citizen in Hugo and finally the White Bear Press, our flagship paper and subliminally my goal all along. I still handle obits; it was a duty I didn’t want to delegate.

I am proud of my tenure with the White Bear Press and its storied, 125-year history. Without this community newspaper, or any newspaper for that matter, there would be little recorded history. Social media certainly doesn’t provide a newspaper clipping for grandma to hang on her refrigerator door.

I am a dinosaur in this world of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I refuse to embrace social media because I feel conspiratorial hints at invasions of my privacy. Luckily the (much) younger members of the news team happily post stories and monitor sites for chatter, making up for my reluctance. To put this in better perspective, I started my journalism career on a manual typewriter. That’s how old I am. How things have changed.

I have helped tell the stories of fascinating people, covered countless government meetings, edited and rewritten hundreds of obituary notices and answered thousands of emails. Finding content to fill the paper every week has never been a problem. The stories often come to me.

Heading up this gem of a community paper has been interesting and fun. Well, almost always. There are occasional disgruntled readers or something that requires correction, despite our very best efforts at accuracy. Sometimes, I admit, I’ve wanted to run screaming out of a council chambers when a meeting is particularly long and boring. It’s odd really, to think I started this business as a college intern for my hometown weekly. I’ll never forget a school board meeting where the main topic of discussion was cheerleaders’ skirts. I have come full circle.

I leave the newsroom in capable hands. Our dedicated staff of talented millenials are passionate about community journalism and spreading real news.

There is nothing fake about our mission.

Although I’ll be stepping down as lead editor here at Press Publications, I have been asked to stay on as a contributing writer so my byline will still appear.

Fortunately I can work from anywhere with WiFi so I won’t be disappearing completely. Neither will stories on the lake level lawsuit headed to the Supreme Court in 2020, a case I’ve followed since 2012.

I agreed to part-time hours because I worry a bit about being bored in retirement. I’ve worked since I was 15 after all and I’m used to it. It’s probably a silly notion since there seem to be myriad activities for seniors. I do have a bucket list. Maybe I’ll finally learn Spanish. And then there’s travel.

With a son and son-in-law serving active duty in the military, our children move around the country.

Instead of coming to us, we will go to them. The road beckons and I must go. ¡Hasta luego! (see you later) And all the best in the New Year!

Bring in the New Year with fudge

or as long as I can remember we have celebrated New Year’s Eve with chocolate.

For some odd reason I’ve always believed whatever I did on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day was going to be a representation of what the year would be like, but I’m not superstitious.

I’ve never actually thought back over the year or even recorded what I did to see if there is any truth to my silly thoughts. The reality is, it’s more of a frame of mind and my way of trying to control what the year will be like. If I fall asleep before midnight, will the year be boring?

If I go to a party or have my own party will the year be filled with fun, friends and family? Silly, I know.

Obviously, I have little control of what kind of year it’s going to be, but Wild I can control what I get to eat. Last Chow week, I met someone who also really likes chocolate. We got talking about Lisa Erickson “all things food” and like most food conversations, we ended up talking about a favorite goodie—this time hot fudge. The best treats are made with chocolate and lots of butter. Is there a better way to bring in the New Year than with a hot fudge sundae?

It’s going to be a very good year!

Ford’s (Butter) Hot Fudge 12 ounces good quality chocolate chips like Ghirardelli 1 cup good quality butter like Crystal Ball Farm’s Dinner Bell Creamery butter 2 2/3 cup evaporated milk 4 cups powdered sugar 2 tsp. vanilla In a large sauce pan, over medium heat, melt the butter and chocolate chips. Slowly whisk until the butter and the chips are melted; add the milk and then the powdered sugar. Stirring constantly, bring to a rapid boil. Reduce heat and boil for 8 minutes while stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Serve warm over ice cream. Pour extra (if there is any) into jars.

Seal tightly and store refrigerated.

Most of the flavor and texture comes from the butter and chocolate. The Fords also recommend adding the hot fudge to a cup of coffee for an extra special treat.

PAID LETTER: Tony Cavegn for City Council Tony Cavegn would be a great city council member. Working in government today is not a desirable task. It takes a special kind of person. I believe that Tony has what it takes to help our city move forward in a safe and fiscal manner.

A keynote strength is his relationship building. He listens and gathers facts.

When he speaks, it is with a clear voice on the question. He easily relates to people of all ages and backgrounds. He

is quick to volunteer, be it a “Breakfast with Santa,” a school or church event, or as a member of a community team searching for the whereabouts of a missing citizen.

A diligent and informed decision-maker, Tony does his homework in order to gain varying perspectives of a situation … and then he can be very forthright in presenting his answer.

After expressing his viewpoints, the listener has little doubt as to his position.

He speaks his mind in a thoughtful manner that lets his listeners know they have been heard.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF

Never afraid to accept challenges, Tony is willing to try something new if the something old isn’t working. Once more, after the decision is made, he does an excellent job of follow-through and in communicating his actions.

He is always ready to step up and take a leadership role, but equally excited to work with others as a team player. Tony works hard to build consensus among persons with different viewpoints. His ultimate goal is to find a solution that would work best for the city. Tony also tries to keep complex issues as basic as possible to gain understanding and

cooperation among individuals and organizations.

He is a family man who has raised his children in Lino Lakes. He cares about providing the services the citizens of Lino Lakes need to maintain a quality lifestyle. There are many attributes of being a good council person. Our city deserves the best, and this writer endorses Tony Cavegn as being that person.

The Grinch strikes on Christmas

The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department is asking for help to identify the Grinch who struck on Christmas. At 2:10 a.m. a camera captured video footage of a woman breaking into a home in the 600 block of Highland Circle in Lino Lakes. The woman broke into the garage, searched a car, broke into the home and stole many items. Anyone who has any information or recognizes the woman in the video is asked to call the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department at 651-982-2300. The police department is also asking residents who have camera systems in the area to review their video footage from the early morning hours of Dec. 25 and report any suspicious activity.

Common angler question: Does my ice shelter need a license?

As more anglers prepare for ice fishing, the DNR sometimes receives questions about ice shelter licenses.

Minnesota fishing regulations recognize two types of shelters: portable and nonportable. A portable shelter is one that collapses, folds or is disassembled for transportation.

Portable shelters require licenses and identification only when left unattended, defined as when all occupants are more than 200 feet away.

In contrast, all nonportable ice shelters must be licensed. Wheeled fish houses are not considered portable and must be licensed.

“Super” Solomon and his family were playing games at their church the Friday before Christmas. They walked up the stairs to grab a game and found Mr. and Mrs. Claus, a bunch of familiar faces and a ton of wrapped presents in front of a tree.

Super Solomon is the son of Travis and Jen Wunderlich, who have lived in Lexington for almost two years. On Easter Sunday, three days before his third birthday, Solomon was diagnosed with high-risk B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “It was the worst April Fools Day non-prank,” Jen said.

Sara Jane Parsons has always loved creating things. After a horrible car accident that left her unable to use her arms and legs, she had to find a new way to create. Parsons, 55, grew up in Circle Pines and graduated from Centennial in 1981.While she was looking for part-time legal work, Parsons began drawing and painting and fell in love with the craft. An assistant tapes dowels to her brushes. This reduces the wear on her brushes and adds a little bit of length to the brush so she can paint a little bigger.

The City of Lino Lakes has until Feb. 1 to come up with a proposal to save Chomonix Golf Course.

The Anoka County Parks Committee recently discussed the possibility of turning the golf course into a multiuse outdoor recreation area within the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve.

Lino Lakes Mayor Jeff Reinert, City Councilman Rob Rafferty and City Administrator Jeff Karlson all attended the Jan. 15 meeting in an effort to get more information and see if there is anything the city can do to protect the course. Reinert said the city was first made aware of the topic on Monday, the day before the Parks Committee met.

Representatives of Truline Construction, of Monticello, visited the joint Planning and Zoning Commission

and Economic Development Authority (EDA) meeting Jan. 16 to have an informal discussion regarding their vision for the city-owned property located on Centerville Road near Sorel Street in Centerville.

Superintendent Brian Dietz explained the event was an opportunity for representatives of the district to ask questions of the legislators and identify areas of concern.

After Lino Lakes resident Missy Rodriguez found herself locked out of her house in the early hours of the morning March 9 in just her pajamas and slippers, she was thankful for her husband’s Christmas present. For many years, a group of quilters has gathered on the second and fourth Tuesday morning of the month at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Circle Pines to work on their own personal projects.

Last fall, the group decided they wanted to put their creative minds together to do something for the community.

Scott always pictured himself going into the tool repair business but said both his father and uncle convinced him the rental business would be a better choice.

Alexander Knutson, of Lino Lakes, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when he was in the third grade. ALL is the most common form of childhood leukemia and is a cancer of the blood that affects the body’s white blood cells.

Since Alexander is a fan of Star Wars, his parents, Lorne and Marianne, helped him understand his cancer and the treatments by explaining them in terms of the Galactic Empire.

They told him that the rebel blood cells in his body meant him harm and the rebellion had to be put down. The loyal cells needed weapons (chemo) and a case (surgically implanted port) to win the Battle of the Blood Cells.

Centerville mothers Gina Schmittdiel and Erin Ribar met three years ago after being connected through the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) of Minnesota. Gina and her husband Brian have two children, a 4-year-old and 3-year-old Gunnar, who has Down syndrome. Erin and her husband Matt have four children ages 7, 4, 2, and 7 months. Ben, their 2 1/2-year-old, has Down syndrome.

In 2017 the mothers began attending a Down syndrome parent group in Blaine. The following year, the two stepped up to facilitate the group, which they are doing again this year with the help of Sana Kassab Soussi from Blaine. Because the location in Blaine was only 10 miles away from another support group in Mounds View, they decided to find a new location in Circle Pines.

When Mayor Jeff Reinert decided he was going to run for the Anoka County Commissioner District 6 seat, Councilman Rob Rafferty, who had two years left of his term, decided it was “the appropriate thing to do” to run for mayor.

Rafferty has lived in Lino Lakes for 23 years and is a SUBMITTED senior technician at Architecture Advantage in St. Paul. He has served on the council for 10 years but has also served on the Lino Lakes Charter Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission and EDA. In the Nov. 5 election, Rafferty received 45.82% of the votes, followed by Tony Cavegn with 39.50%. Pat Davern and Ashley Antus were also running for the seat.

New roof helps veteran's family weather cancer The Montes family woke up to the sound of banging on their roof and found a large crowd gathered on their front lawn Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Ben and Mandy Montes and their three young children live on East Golden Lake Road in Circle Pines and are the latest recipients of a new roof, thanks to the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. The project is a nationwide effort to show gratitude to and honor the veterans who have served our country and the families who support them. Since 2016, more than 150 roofs have been installed.

Ben served 10 years of active duty in the U.S. Army and remains on active duty with the Army National Guard as a recruiter. In July, he was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer, which had already spread throughout his body.

DNR looking into possible illegal sales of venison

A Christmas light show in Circle Pines has taken holiday decorating to a new level. Circle Pines resident Justin Barno is the mastermind behind the show at 4102 88th Ave. NE. During his years at home, Barno helped his parents decorate for the holiday, but he was inspired to go beyond your average Christmas lights and inflatables after he saw Richard Holdman's house online. Holdman is one of the first creators of an animated light display.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confi rmed that Sausage Haus in Lexington has been under investigation since the fall of 2018.

The investigation began in 2018 after the DNR received complaints that the establishment was selling wild venison. As part of the investigation, the DNR obtained a couple of search warrants and interviewed more than 400 people who either dropped a deer off or purchased venison from Sausage Haus.

The main concerns are that customers who had never brought a deer to Sausage Haus for processing were able to purchase venison, and that customers who brought in a deer left with more than their deer could yield.

Bright Night

Quad area residents now have a glimmer of hope that a family restaurant will reopen in the former Matthew's Family Restaurant location. A post circulating on the Nextdoor app claimed that a business called Creamery Crossing will open to customers as early as February.

Eatery Creamery Crossing currently operates a location in Isanti and has been in business for over 35 years.

The Quad Community Press reached out to Creamery Crossing, but the business was hesitant to provide details as it is still in the process of working out a lease agreement. “We are excited that the community is excited. We do not have a lease yet, so we are just asking everyone to be patient for a week or two while we move forward with more definite plans,” said a representative for the business.

Larry Allen Hanson, 61, of Centerville, has been charged with one count of cruelty to animals. Olympian on (lake) ice

An Olympic fi gure skater graced an outdoor ice rink on White Bear Lake recently, bringing a fi lm crew along to capture the experience.

The celebrity skater, Michelle Kwan, was a surprise guest to Chad and Nicole Whiterabbit of Mahtomedi, who were referred by a friend to the fi lm crew, F3 Visuals.

F3 is a Minneapolis cinematography company that specializes in aerial (drone) footage. It is the same company that fi lmed a Mahtomedi High School grad, McQuaid Boo, skating on crystal clear ice near Ramsey County beach earlier this month. The video,

called LaCroix on Ice, went viral. Last we checked, it had 175,000 views. Somehow Kwan saw it on Instagram and since she was in the area, decided to do her own version of skating on White Bear Lake. Only she was wearing fi gure skates.

At least, that’s the story told by Chad Whiterabbit, who got a call from a friend asking if his rink was shoveled because Michelle Kwan was coming.

Kwan, 39, retired from competitive skating in 2006. She won two Olympic medals, a silver in ‘98 and a bronze in ‘02, plus five world championships.

She was very courteous, Whiterabbit said, and an incredible skater. “You couldn’t even

hear her edges.�

The cold temperatures were a little edgy, though, and Kwan was freezing. So Whiterabbit set up a heated ice shelter as a warming house. “Ice conditions were really good,� added Whiterabbit, which was a reason Kwan and the crew came to his rink. And yes, it was shoveled; all three of his children play hockey and practice on the lake.

The production crew used a drone, like they did in the LaCroix video, to fi lm Kwan, who indicated she planned to post it on her Instagram account. They fi lmed in 10-minute intervals from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.

Kwan took breaks to warm up. Whiterabbit said the crew did it pro bono because they’re big fans.

Just a day earlier, the celebrity skater was in Des Moines campaigning for Joe Biden.

The Des Moines Register said Kwan “gave some free pointers to ice skaters Saturday morning� in downtown

Des Moines “before gliding effortlessly into a pitch� for the former vice president. She joined his presidential campaign as surrogate director, a job she did in a similar capacity for former presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

According to Whiterabbit, Kwan came to the Twin Cities to visit

Marty Collins, the son of the late Tom Collins, a professional skater who founded the Champions on Ice tour. The elder Collins died at his Edina home in September. Kwan starred on his tour along with former Olympians Brian Boitano, Nancy Kerrigan and Kristi Yamaguchi.

Andrew Blilie Centennial Swimming Andrew Blilie, Centennial senior swim captain who’s a returning state qualifier in the 500 freestyle, has been doing well in the 100 and 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley for the Cougars. “In our two dual meets, he’s won every event he’s been in,” coach Pete Crawford said. “He’s a hard worker, a good leader, he takes on challenges, and encourages others.”

His season bests are 2:08.23 in the IM, 52.27 in the 100 and 5:15.52 in the 500 which placed fourth in the Blaine Invitational.

Members of the Centennial Alpine Ski team were treated to pizza by a parent volunteer, Paul Belting, during a recent meet at Wild Mountain. Coach Zach Beddow said the Cougar boys and girls teams were both middle of the pack in a field of about 25 schools at the meet. “Our athletes felt good about their performances and most importantly had a lot of fun at our invitational race,” he said.

Centennial boys basketball was still looking for its fi rst win after falling to the Champlin Park Rebels 84-40 at home Friday, Dec. 20. That fi rst “W” was not likely to come in their next game, as the Cougars faced Class 3A’s top-ranked team, Minnehaha Academy, led by two of the nation’s top college prospects, on Friday, Dec. 27 at an East Ridge holiday tournament.
