Preschoolers experience snowy outdoors

Area preschoolers braved the cold to learn about chilly critters this week.

The 2-5 year olds, along with their parents, were part of the Nature Play program entitled “Cold Critters” at the Wargo

Nature Center in Lino Lakes.

Before heading outdoors to track down cold critters, the children learned about what animals do in the winter through interpretive activities. They stamped animal tracks on a snowy white piece of paper, threaded Cheerios onto pipe cleaners to make a bird feeder,

and examined furry animal pelts.

But most of their time was spent outside. Each child carried a cup of birdseed over to a bird shelter and fed the birds the wintertime treat.

Marlys Burgess of Blaine is still sewing and selling doll clothes 57 years later.

Burgess, who goes by Mrs. B, started selling doll clothes at her mom’s suggestion in 1958. Mrs. B was working while raising two boys. Her mom suggested she could sew a few doll clothes on the side and be able to stay home with her boys.

“It’s never a few with me,” said Mrs. B., while standing amidst racks and racks of doll clothes at her shop 57 years later.

She started by sewing some doll clothes for her nieces and

then began to sell out of her house.

“I started sewing the year before Barbie came out,” she said. “I had no idea what Barbie was.” But soon she was whisking out doll clothes with tiny dimensions.

“I couldn’t fit my finger in the arm hole,” she said.

Mrs. B. had two more sons as she continued to sell doll clothes from home.

For 25 years, residents in the northeast metro have been able to help at-risk teenagers by buying a Christmas tree.

The sale of Christmas trees on Lexington Avenue in Circle Pines by Arise Ministries funds the ministry’s programs for teens in Twin Cities juvenile detention centers.

Roger Koskinen, president of Arise, started the ministry in 2008 after 18 years of volunteering as a police chaplain with the St. Paul Police Department. He wanted to do more for teens in trouble, “to give them faith, hope and direction for the future.”

Koskinen is still a volunteer police chaplain and works full time with his ministry. But his involvement with youth goes even beyond those 25 years.

“I’ve been working with teenagers in some capacity for 40 years,” he said.

All profits from the Minnesota-grown Christmas trees

will benefit Arise’s programs, including worship services, Bible studies, mentoring and holiday parties.

Arise Ministries provides 35 weekly chaplain groups and Bible studies in seven juvenile correction facilities located in the Twin Cities greater metropolitan area.

Individual mentoring and discipleship is also offered. Every week, more than 300 youth ages 10 to 19 attend Arise programs.

Koskinen also hands out Christmas gift bags to incarcerated teens with books, snacks and hygiene items.

Volunteers help run the Christmas tree lot, which Koskinen has been operating in the area to help at-risk teens for 25 years.

“We’ve been here ever since I’ve been working with youth,” he said.

The donated Christmas tree lot location is in the RDM Insurance Business Mall parking lot, at 9205 Lexington Avenue North. The lot will be open until Christmas or until the trees are all sold.

A MOMENT IN HISTORY: Early settlers undeterred by swamps Centerville Township and Blaine Township, consisting of Centerville, Lino Lakes, Circle Pines, Lexington, and Blaine, received their designation in 1877 after survey crews measured the area 30 years prior. Unfortunately, the crew’s experience slogging through bog, swamp and sand did not leave a favorable impression.

“This township is almost unacceptable for either men or beast except when frozen up,” reported Deputy Surveyor A.J. Hewitt.

Undeterred, speculators arrived in the area during the 1850s to purchase land and advertisements promoted the space for sale as promising farmland despite its actual status of undrained bog. The Germans headed predominantly to the Rice Lake area, while the French-Canadians

settled on the east side.

According to research conducted by Stephen Lee, the original land speculators were Andrew B. More, James Starkey, Charles Petteys and Truman Smith. It appears only More ever lived on the land, though business partners Starkey and Petteys left their mark in other ways. In 1855, they platted the village of Columbus and within two years had a working sawmill, hotel, store and blacksmith shop, among other businesses and homes. Their efforts, however, were destroyed by financial panic and fire within 10 years in addition to the final blow — when the railroad was routed through Forest Lake rather than Columbus.

World events such as the Irish potato famine pushed immigrants to the United States in droves. One of these

families that made their way west to the Rice Lake area in the latter 1850s was headed by Michael Golden, who settled on 160 acres of land. His sons, the eldest of whom was 20 when they arrived, farmed for many years in Centerville and also served in the Civil War. John Golden was 24 when he enlisted in Company F of the Fifth Regiment of Minnesota Volunteers and fought in Mississippi, though he received a medical discharge in 1865 for “ruptured cords” in his legs.

Three years later, he married Frances Ada Grindall and worked a farm, taught school, served as the supervisor of Blaine Township and justice of the peace. His war injuries persisted, however, and in 1888 he sold his farm to James T. Elwell for $4,000. He and Frances moved to Anoka and then purchased another farm

in Burns Township, but Frances would file for divorce in 1894. John remarried and had six children before his death.

Settling an area for subsistence farming is one thing, but in order to accommodate an actual local economy based on trade, the families required modification of the land and the ability to move goods out for sale. The trails that wound through the woods and across the plains couldn’t be trusted for their safety. According to Lee, a 55-mile route through Little Canada and the Rice Lakes area to Grindstone Creek near the junction with Kettle River and on to Superior, Wisconsin was platted in 1854. Another leading from the Minneapolis area was attempted, though Lee noted “The Anoka Sand Plain presented difficulties.”

“The horses pulling stages

needed to be changed at a station near the present Lake Drive and Main Street, since they would be worn out from pulling a stage through the soft sand of the rutted road,” wrote Lee. Elwell, who purchased Golden’s land, also purchased thousands of other acres in the state, began the Minneapolis Furniture Company and the Minneapolis Bedding Company, and invested a small fortune in digging ditches.

It was these ditches that we will look at in more depth next week, as we look at the creation of Elwell grade… and Lexington Avenue.

the 1930s and patterns which fit this century’s popular American Girl dolls.

In 1974 she began collecting dolls, as well.

She decided to become a bona fide business to get business prices.

“We opened a business to get the [doll collector] books cheaper,” she said. “One thing led to another.”

Mrs. B’s Dolls is now home to hundreds of dolls. And many of them are over 100 years old.

Her oldest doll dates from 1840.

Antique, vintage, miniature, Barbie, Precious Moments, Adora and American Girl dolls fill her shop from floor to ceiling.

But doll buyers are

harder to come by than doll clothes buyers.

“More people are selling than buying,” she said. “My doll clothes are my main business.”

Center, had taught the children that food is harder to find in the winter through a song: “Feed, feed, feed the birds in the wintertime.

When the days are dark and cold, food is hard to find.”

While outside the children saw a chickadee high up in a tree.

“He is probably very excited because he saw us putting out all this new food for him,” said Vehe.

The children also examined turkey tracks

and fox tracks in the snow. They saw a tree that had been pecked by a woodpecker and learned how to hop like a squirrel.

The Nature Play program is put on by the Wargo Nature Center every fi rst Thursday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Cost is $6 per adult and child pair and $3 for any additional child.

ast Thursday night was the kickoff for the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation that has been created to serve the communities that share the shoreline of White Bear Lake. A group of people who saw a need for a non-profit that could benefit local initiatives and priorities came together to establish the foundation. The board is made up of volunteers from Dellwood, Mahtomedi, Birchwood Village, White Bear Township and White Bear Lake.

When an individual or a family has money they want to give to support their charitable interests, this community foundation can help by distributing the funds Publisher’s annually to numerous causes based on the wishes of the donor.

View This is the easiest way to give to multiple entities you love, unlike Carter Johnson other groups that are specific to a cause. The foundation is not just a fundraising organization, but rather an asset management group for donors. Today some of the same individuals who didn’t initially support the idea are now founding members. The communities of Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and Woodbury have established community foundations in recent years. Though the kick-off event was an informational meeting with no financial request, one individual in attendance shook my hand and said he’ll be sending a hefty check. As you prepare for your future I hope you consider including the community foundation in your plans for charitable giving.

Sex Offender ordinance Last week the Mahtomedi city council adopted an ordinance limiting where Level 3 sex offenders can live, at the request of hundreds of residents who signed a petition. Unlike Birchwood, where the Mayor refused to participate in the discussion and the council members acted in fear of legal repercussions, Mahtomedi quickly took action on what their residents were requesting. According to the Department of Corrections, Level 3 Sex offenders are not allowed to live in apartment buildings where children live, yet in Birchwood they are allowed to live within feet of a community park where children play. If you think this doesn’t makes sense, reach out to your mayor and city council members to explore how a local ordinance may impact your community.

A special guest Our guest of honor over the holidays this year is my wife’s 97 year-old grandmother. Grandpa passed away in September, and we moved her from Connecticut. Grandma and Grandpa lived in their Danbury, CT home for more than 50 years. Grandpa raised Christmas trees on their property.

It was just a couple of years ago that he told his customers he wasn’t going to plant any more saplings. One family offered to come in the fall and plant saplings for him, which they did. He allowed long-time customers to continue to take a tree right up through last year. After grandpa’s obituary ran in the paper, a woman sent my mother-in-law a letter to tell her how important the tradition of cutting down a tree on grandpa’s lot had been, and how she had sent the obituary to her grown daughter in CA. Another family expressed condolences, as they had gotten trees from grandpa for years.

My mother-in-law told them to go out to the lot and cut down one last tree. The family who is buying Grandma and Grandpa’s home have said they plan to keep the Christmas tree farm operating. I think Grandpa would have been happy about that.

Grandpa’s Christmas trees brought joy to many over the years. It goes to show the various ways, big and small, that we can make an impact in the lives of others. This season I hope your family will take in new memories, start traditions, share stories and celebrate being together.

Families are fabric of communities

ecently I was speaking with a friend who came here when she was very young as a refugee of the Vietnam War. She was telling me about her family’s story, which as you would expect, included a number of difficult challenges. They persevered because her parents instilled in her the importance of families; of working hard, sticking together, and supporting each Legislator other.

Since I’ve been in office, I have Lingo had many conRoger Chamberlain versations with people from many different backgrounds who have told similar stories. With each conversation I’m struck by our universal values and the importance of families across cultures.

After I spoke to my friend I thought of my father and the record he created of our family.

My father was a picture taker; every family has one. He was always present with his 35mm camera, ready to coordinate a group photo – or worse, he would simply take random “live action” shots. In either case his attempts were always met with some degree of grumbling and us wishing he would run out of fi lm or flashbulbs.

Through the years my father accumulated thousands of pictures from hundreds of events and travels. Now I am glad my father played the photographer and I have come to enjoy and appreciate those old photos. When my father died we found his story in those pictures. When my brother died last year, we pulled out those photos and found even more stories.

The photos are stories about trials and triumphs, losses and new additions to our family, celebrations and recreation. They document the events that bring us together; the photos are a reflection of my father’s values and the importance he placed on family.

Strong families are the essential fabric of vibrant communities and healthy nations. They can be messy, loud, perfectly imperfect, amazingly unique and resilient.

And without much meddling families have been able to overcome great obstacles and endure hardships. They are a circle of strength even with all their imperfections.

That is why it so disheartening to see so many broken families.

With broken families come more poverty, lower academic performance and increased social problems. There are families facing tough times for reasons beyond their control who need support, but many others have been trapped after being led down a destructive path.

some of legislative solution, another program or more money. That has been the trend for fi fty years.

But history tells us no law or program, no amount of money can fi x what has broken the family.

In 1964, President Johnson declared a war on poverty. Since then we’ve spent $22 trillion to support his effort according to researchers at the Heritage Foundation, yet the poverty rate today remains the same as it was in 1965 – 15 percent – and most people in poverty are still women and children.

On the contrary, unnecessary intervention into families and academic misfeasance has decreased both the role and resilience of families.

As my Vietnamese friend’s story shows, families can succeed without government intervention. All over the world, families endure good times and bad times, successes and failures. Life is a series of peaks and valleys; the bad times teach us how to persevere and succeed. Through it all, we lean on family.

My wife is the picture taker in our family. While I have grumbled about that occasional annoyance, I have realized the importance of the stories behind the images.

Families are resilient, beautifully imperfect and the strength of our society. As the families go, so shall we.

Cougar girls are on a run

A pair of Northwest Suburban Conference victories extended the Centennial girls' hockey team's win streak to four games this past week.

The Cougars got past Anoka 3-1 on Saturday, after pasting Totino-Grace to start the positive week.

"I think (our improved play) wbegan in the Prior Lake tournament (two weeks ago) and continued last week," offered coach Kristi King.

"Losing in overtime (on back-toback games) against Maple Grove and Breck got us down a bit, but I think we're coming out of it."

Centennial (4-3 in conference, 6-4 overall) and the visiting Tornadoes battled through a pair of scoreless periods, before Cougar eighth-grade forward Allison Pitlick beat Anoka goaltender Molly Scarborough at 3:00 of the third. Anneke Linser and Gabbie Hughes assisted on the goal.

The Tornadoes used a Brenah Sarell goal just 1:23 later to knot the game 1-1.

Maija Almich set up Clare Riley at the 9:25 for the eventual game-winner, and Linser capped a two-point performance with an empty-net marker with 1:22 left to play.

Cougar goalie Anne Juergens had 17 saves en route to the victory, and Scarborough fi nished with 24 saves.

"It was good win for us," said

King. "(Scarborough) is one of the best goaltenders in the state. We don't care if it wasn't a "pretty" win.

We just wanted to win."

Both Linser (13 goals 15 assists) and Hughes (21 goals 10 assists) have scored at least one point in all of Centennial's games so far this season. The line mates were very offensive in the Cougars' contest against Totino to kick off the week, combining for a dozen points in an 11-0 shutout win at Parade Ice Garden.

Hughes has five goals and a pair of assists, and Linser two goals and a trio of helpers. The Cougars raced to a 5-0 fi rst-period lead over the overmatched Eagles, and led 8-0 after two. Centennial fi nished with a 27-18 advantage in shots-ongoal. Kristen Peck had 19 saves in the Centennial nets to pick up the shutout victory.

Freshman Almich had the fi rst goal of the game, and finished with two goals and a assist. Clare Riley had a goal and a trio of assists, and Shannon Meany a goal and a helper.

"It was good to get some different players in the scorebook," said King.

Centennial a rival Blaine bumped heads on Tuesday (after press time), and the Cougars will host Andover at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Centennial gymnasts nab All Around crowns The 2015-16 Centennial Gymnastics team opened their season on December 1 with an away dual meet against the Park Center Pirates.

The Cougars left the contest with All-Around honors in both Varsity (Andrea Gessner, 36.1) and Junior Varsity (Hannah Peiffer, 27.5), and a JV meet win (99.55—89.65). Even though the Cougar Varsity fell to the Pirates 131.45—126.825, the Cougars were happy that they scored above 126 in the early season match.

This year’s Cougar team is very young and inexperienced in High School gymnastics. The 17 member team has only six returning gymnasts and only one senior, Co-Captain Brigid O’Fallon. Returning juniors Gessner and Co-Captain Amy Marrah bring Varsity experience and leadership. Ten gymnasts

are freshman, and eight of those are rookies. Those freshmen shook off opening night jitters and performed well on the JV squad.

Shannon helped ignite the offense for the Centennial girls’ hockey team in a nonconference matchup against New Prague.

The junior defenseman led everyone with three assists in a 5-4 Cougar victory. Shannon lettered in Varsity Hockey since Freshman year, Last year (2014/2015) was Player on the Centennial Varsity Hockey team that was Conference Champs. Minnesotan musical on tap for holidays

If Ebenezer Scrooge wore flannel, drank Leinenkugels and elongated his O’s, his story might be something like “A ‘Don’t Hug Me’ Christmas Carol.”

Masquers Theatre Company will present this comedic musical, which delivers Charles Dickens’ classic story with a Minnesota twist, at the Forest Lake American Legion weekends through Dec. 20.

The partnership between the American Legion and Masquers Theatre Company goes back years— according to the director of the show, Janice Murphy Roman, a few alumni from the theater once composed an original musical to perform at the Legion.

When the Legion approached them once again about performing a holiday dinner show, “A ‘Don’t Hug Me’ Christmas Carol” seemed like the perfect choice, since they have performed two other shows from the Minnesota-themed “Don’t Hug Me” series of musicals in the past.

Set in the fictitious backwoods Minnesota town of

Bunyan Bay, the musical follows the story of Gunner, the owner of a rustic country bar.

“Gunner is sort of a curmudgeon; he doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas,” Roman said.

After quarreling with his wife about Christmas celebrations, Gunner takes his Ski-Doo out on the frozen lake, falls through the ice and slips into a coma. During this coma, Gunner is visited by a mysterious figure who shows him the Christmases of his past, present and future to try to win him over into the holiday spirit.

“The music is fun,” Roman said. “The songs are so corny and funny that you can pull out all the stops— you don’t have to follow the rules of traditional musical theater.”

She show includes 17 original songs with a distinct Minnesota flair, such as “Gunner Fell Into an Ice Hole,” “I Love You More Than Football,” and ”Grandma Cut the Christmas Cheese.”

Phil and Paul Olson, the brothers who wrote the script and music for the “Don’t Hug Me” series of musicals, have written their series of musicals from

firsthand experience, as they grew up in Edina, Minnesota.

“One of them is actually a doctor with Lino Clinics,” Roman said.

With a cast of five, Roman said that the most challenging part of the show has been handling the amount of work each person has to contribute during the entire length of the play.

“Since it’s a small cast, everyone has a lot to do,” she said. “It’s a lot of lines to learn, and a lot of dances and songs. In a bigger musical, maybe one or two characters have most the dialogue, and if you’re in the chorus, you get maybe one or two lines. But in this production, everyone has equal weight.”

All children will receive candy, a gift and a picture with Santa. The cost for the breakfast is $7.95 for adults and teens, $4.95 for children ages 6 through 12 and free for children 5 and younger.

Kevin Grow of Circle Pines is a member of the Carleton College Knights men’s basketball team for the 2015-2016 season. The Knights are coached by Guy Kalland, who is in his 32nd season as head coach, and is one of only two active MIAC coaches with more

than 300 wins. Carleton is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and NCAA Division III.
