t is time to pull out your ugly Christmas sweaters and beautiful holiday lights. The holiday season is upon us. Soon, we all will be stuck inside by the fire with a warm cup of hot cocoa reflecting on the warmer Minnesota months. I have always been a fan of winter mornings, but that is about it. There is always too much snow and the wind is always too cold. Also, I am a freezebaby, so even if I am wearing 10 layers, I am cold. The one good thing about the winter months is

Winter wildlife watch By Jackie Bussjaeger
B irds in Winter
When the first Dark-eyed Junco appears under the feeder each fall, it’s a sure sign that winter won’t be far behind. In mid-October, these unique gray-and-white sparrows arrive in Minnesota from their northern breeding grounds, high on the
Arctic tundra. It’s hard to believe that any creature would travel to spend the winter here on purpose, but the juncos find plenty of shelter in our forests and neighborhoods, and are happy to scratch for fallen seeds under most backyard bird feeders. Right behind the juncos, we
Minnesota’s largest woodpecker species, the Pileated Woodpecker, can be found across the state all winter long, sometimes even venturing into backyards.
Sucker Channel, found in Vadnais-Sucker Lake Regional Park, stays open all winter, sustaining a small population of ducks and Trumpeter Swans, and attracting wildlife watchers across the metro.

might begin to see more visitors from the north, such as tiny Pine Siskens or Common Redpolls. Their appearance isn’t always a guarantee—it fluctuates from year to year based on the abundance of wild seed cones on evergreen trees. However, the folks at the Finch Research Network have predicted this will be a good year to spy Pine Siskens. Anyone driving along the wide open cornfields outside the metro is likely to run into groups of Horned Larks and Snow Buntings. These birds often travel in mixed flocks, picking through the crop fields in wide open spaces that, under a blanket of snow, resemble their tundra summering grounds. Agricultural areas are also the best places to find the magnificent Snowy Owl, a daytime hunter that cruises over the open land hunting for rodents. Though some birds of prey remain near their breeding territory all year long, others migrate hundreds and thousands of miles. One of the most reliable winter hawks to find in Minnesota is the Rough-legged Hawk, recognizable by its pale head feathers, dark “wrist” patches under the wings, and fully-feathered legs
The Common Redpoll is a tiny finch that sometimes visits Minnesota in the wintertime, feeding on the catkins produced by shrubs.
YearRounders
Dark-eyed Juncos, sometimes called "snowbirds," occur all over the U.S., with many subspecies and a wide variety of coloration. In Minnesota, we often see the Slate-Colored subspecies, which can range from a light gray to dark black coloration.
8 SAVOUR WINTER 2023
The excitement of winter arrivals also prompts a certain appreciation for the year-round residents, the true Minnesotan birds, that stay by our side through the seasons. This distinguished group includes many of our familiar raptors—such as Bald Eagles and Redtailed Hawks. Most of our native woodpecker species, from the dinky Downy Woodpecker to the mighty Pileated, do just fine through the winter. They can still find the nourishment they need in the form of insects and larvae hidden under tree bark. Some of our smallest backyard birds are surprisingly hardy. Cardinals, chickadees, House Finches, and petite American Goldfinches— dramatically drabber in their winter colors—all seem to handle the winter well. While they’re capable of sustaining themselves on wild food sources, they certainly seem grateful to visit well-stocked feeders all year round. Some of the most impressive year-rounders are the waterfowl that choose to shrug off migration. When most of the lakes are frozen over, it can be a gamble to stay behind, but thousands of Minnesota waterfowl make it work every winter. Natural stream flow can keep a waterway open through the freeze, as well as manmade tools such as aerators. Ducks and swans take advantage of the opportunity to
continue to feed on underwater vegetation or pursue fish under the ice. Winter also provides some of the year’s best owl-watching opportunities, since the leafless trees offer a much better view of the high branches where these mysterious birds of prey like to perch during the day. And some of our other favorite year-rounders, American Crows and Blue Jays, are quick to send up a ruckus when an owl is in the neighborhood.
Where to Watch
In summer, American Goldfinches have bright, canary-yellow feathers. Before the onset of winter, they lose their brightness and take on a more subdued color scheme.
The Hooded Merganser is a small diving duck with a striking appearance. If they can find open water, they will stay all winter, hunting fish under the ice.
Northern Cardinals are one of the most common backyard feeder birds, providing a brilliant pop of color against the winter monochrome.
A Snowy Owl perches high in a tree, keeping an eye on the nearby farm fields.
It can be difficult to get out during the winter, so if you’re more the homebody type, a backyard bird feeder might be the choice for you. Different seed mixes work well for different birds—a little research or visit to a birdseed vendor can help you determine what’s best for your yard. Cardinals, finches, and sparrows, with their wedge-shaped beaks, love to crack open black sunflower seeds. But if you’re lucky enough to have American Robins hanging around for winter, mealworms might be a better choice. Suet is also a popular choice, especially for woodpeckers. When the lakes and rivers are frozen solid, a heated birdbath can provide a much-needed water source for backyard songbirds.
If you want a more active wildlife viewing experience, there are dozens of public parks throughout the northeast metro that harbor a surprising diversity of winter wildlife. Many of them, such as VadnaisSucker Lake Regional Park, offer not only winter hiking but cross-country ski trails. This particular park is a favorite for winter wildlife watchers, since the channel between the two lakes stays open all winter, providing a haven for waterfowl, including a regular group of Trumpeter Swans. Wherever you end up, wildlife watching can be a fun and rewarding way to pass the time and learn about nature during the long winter months.

Cozy up with handmade artwork this Holiday season By Madeline Dolby Photos contributed
14 SAVOUR WINTER 2023
T
he Holiday season is filled with lights, cozy sweaters and lots of snow. One way to combat the cold can be by snuggling up with a blanket by the fireplace with a warm drink in hand. Winter is here, and it is the perfect time to cuddle up, get cozy and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa out of a handmade mug. The White Bear Center for the Arts offers a wide variety of fun, ceramic classes throughout the winter season. Ranging from advanced to beginner classes, the Center for the Arts offers a wide range of opportunities that allow you to create beautiful pieces of ceramic ranging from hand-held brooms and brushes to a hand built mug.
There are a variety of clay workshops that cover a large variety of ceramics. Classes range from glaze work, creating a pinch pot, hand building and pottery on a wheel. There is something for everyone in the family. Each class is once a week and is a month long. The White Bear Center for the Arts is offering holiday-themed classes that will add a warm glow to your home this season. “We have a one-day Holiday luminaria class,” said Ellie Fueling, the communications manager for the White Bear Center for the Arts, “where you make luminaries out of clay.” The class is from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 6
and on Jan. 20. It is for all skill levels. There also will be a felted luminarias class taught by artist Leslie Granbeck. Students will use wool and a little soapy water to create texture and other designs using a variety of natural materials. Each student will walk away with two luminarias to add to their collection of festive Holiday lights. As well as having a special Holiday class, there are clay gift-making kits that one can take home. The kit includes a bag of clay and an assortment of glazes. Users can create pinch pots, animal figures or even make a small plate to give away as a gift or to keep for themselves. The kit is suitable for all skill levels. Artwork can be fired at the White Bear Center for the Arts at no additional cost. “I think even after the pandemic, people were so worn out by looking at a screen,” said Sara Nephew, the creative services director of the White Bear Center for the Arts, “people wanted to start using their hands again. I feel like we gained a lot of new students after the pandemic because people really needed that healing and being in community.” The clay classes offered are the most popular. The students who are a part of the clay community have really found a bond with one another. “And you get to bring something beautiful home and use it,” said Nephew, “and that’s the beauty of ceramics, it's usable art.” As well as clay classes highlighting the Holiday season, there will also be an oil painting class focused on the winter season. “We have a Holiday still life oil painting class,” said Fueling, “it is kind of a good introduction to oil painting.” There will be two Holiday oil painting classes offered from Dec. 1-8 and during the week of Dec. 15-22. This winter, the Center for the Arts not only offers a wide range of classes but exhibitions for you to enjoy. A White Bear Center for the Arts members exhibition will be highlighted from the beginning of November through January 17. Members have submitted their work ranging from paintings and fiber works to ceramics. The reception for the members exhibit will be from 3:30- 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. there will be introductions to the exhibition. There also will be live music, beverages and food. You can sign up for clay or oil painting classes on the White Bear Center for the Arts website at whitebeararts.org. Registration costs differ.

Joy. Full. When you put as much food on as many tables as we do, you learn a thing or two about giving thanks. So we’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our customers for shopping here, to our employees for working here, to our partners for growing and making great products and selling them here. Thank you. Thank you for your friendship and loyalty. It is an honor to be your grocer at this time of year and all year long. May your holiday season be full of happiness, kindness and, most of all,
