Community effort adds new instruments to Mounds View Schools BY AMANDA DEPHILLIPS SPECIAL TO THE PRESS
Schmitt Music delivered 16 new instruments to Mounds View Public Schools last month as part of the Schmitt Music Challenge, a community fundraiser. This challenge was set in place last fall during Rock the School House, the annual fundraising event for the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation (MVSEF). Schmitt Music challenged attendees and foundation supporters to raise funds in exchange for new instruments. For every $5,000 raised by the foundation, Schmitt Music donated a new instrument to Mounds View Public Schools. And when Rock the School House raised more than $80,000 last fall, the challenge was met and a total of 16 instruments were donated. “This was really an outstanding opportunity for the instrumental music programs,” said Paul Gronert,
band director at Chippewa Middle School. He approached the team at Schmitt Music about partnering with the district to further fundraising efforts. He brought the partnership to the attention of MVSEF Executive Director Heather Meyer, and a collaboration was born. The instruments will enhance the district’s school-owned instrument program, which makes participating in band or orchestra more affordable for students and their families. “One initiative supported by the foundation is the school-owned instrument program,” Meyer explained. “Increased access to schoolowned musical instruments and subsidized rental costs is a key mission and, through the foundation’s support, we want to ensure that band and orchestra is accessible to all students in our schools.” SEE INSTRUMENTS, PAGE 3
Super Blood Wolf Moon over Island Lake JIM RADFORD | SUBMITTED
Shoreview photographer Jim Radford caught the Jan. 20 Super Blood Wolf Moon over Island Lake in Shoreview, at left. The composite image shows three phases of the lunar eclipse. The orange-red tint of the moon during a total lunar eclipse is a reflection of sunlight scattering through the earth’s atmosphere, like a sunrise or sunset. A super moon has close proximity to earth. A wolf moon is the first full moon of the year.
Remembering Shore-Oaks Dairy Queen BY BONNIE MORPHEW SPECIAL TO THE PRESS
Shore-Oaks Dairy Queen, owned and operated by Norman and Carolyn Espersen, broke ground for their store at 4615 Hodgson Road, Shoreview, in 1973. Norman, a husband and father of five (Bonnie, Cindy, Mike, Mark and Larry) worked in the food industry for years with his father and brother. He also was a military cook in the Army during the Korean War. Once, he was stationed on an older ship that was not set up to handle the 10,000 men that he had to feed. Norm, being the kind of guy he was, trained his crew to meet the challenge and soldiered through. He did the same for his Dairy Queen. His wife, Carolyn, was a homemaker who cared for many
foster children early in their marriage as well as after they had some of their own children. Some of their children are adopted. It was a big step for the Espersens to open up the Shore-Oaks Dairy Queen and become a large part of the Shoreview and North Oaks community. Their Dairy Queen quickly became a local hangout for the lunch crowd, as well as visitors after work and following games and events. Many times, the line of customers stretched out the door. Not only did the store provide jobs for the community, but the Espersens contributed to many local sport teams as well as church and school events. Carolyn was Norman’s staunch supporter despite her much quieter presence. She kept the schedules and
bill-paying process in tiptop shape. Those who worked for them knew the meaning of being part of a team. From morning setup to closing up for the night, Shore-Oaks Dairy Queen ran like a well-oiled machine. Norm ran a tight ship, and anyone who worked for him can attest to that. Members of the Dairy Queen crew were rewarded for their hard work with some sort of celebration or another each year. This was a time for merriment and camaraderie, which always boosted the morale of one and all. These events were often held at a Polynesian Restaurant called Bali Hai, which is now closed. Some years, the Espersens hosted this celebration in their home, sometimes
