Shoreview teen named candidate in US Presidential Scholars Program

Joey Tan, who will graduate from Mounds View High School this year, has been named one of 5,000 candidates in the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

She was selected from about 3.6 million students who are expected to graduate in 2022 from all the high schools in the country. If she is chosen, Tan will be one of only 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars awarded this prestigious award.

“I was surprised when I received the email message, knowing there are so many other candidates just as good in my school and the country. But honestly, I was very happy but mostly just grateful for the opportunity to apply for the program,” Tan said.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which was established in 1964 by the executive order of the president, recognizes some of the nation’s most outstanding graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership and service to school and community, including accomplishments in visual, creative, performing arts and technical fields.

It is not surprising that Tan was selected in this first cut for the award. Always a high achiever, she not only enrolled and excelled in all of her advanced placement (AP) classes at Mounds View High School (MVHS) and secured high scores in standardized tests, but she is also carrying a full load of classes as a post-secondary enrollment options (PSEO) student at the

Choir students make blankets for homeless teens Choir students from Chippewa Middle School made 11 warm fleece blankets to donate to Hope 4 Youth, a nonprofit organization that helps young people, ages 16 to 24, who are experiencing homelessness in the northern Twin Cities metro area. This is the 10th year the students have worked together to make cozy fleece blankets to donate to the homeless. Over the years, the choir students have donated over 120 blankets.

4th-generation cobbler wins prestigious award Cobbling may be a dying profession, but the tradition is alive and strong at George’s Shoe & Repair in Arden Hills.

Luke George, a fourthgeneration cobbler, is one of the best in the business. He recently won the Gold Award in the Silver Cup Contest from the Shoe Service Institute of America (SSIA).

“I was blown away, since it was my first try. I got gold, and that was awesome,” George said.

this year, I honestly expected to place lower because I knew people in the competition.”

For the competition, George bought two beat-up pairs of shoes that were worn in and started refurbishing them.

“I had to make them look brand new—like they just came off the shelf. It’s a lot of detail and a lot of time,” he said. “They judge detail, balance, the trim and finish of the edge, the stitch lines, and other small details.”

Since the late 1930s, the Silver Cup Contest has recognized excellence in shoe repair

craftsmanship. SSIA’s founders recognized that quality craftsmanship is at the core of success in the shoe repair industry and created this contest as a means to recognize it and promote it.

Press Publications received 4 awards in the 2021 Minnesota Newspaper Association (MNA) Better Newspaper Contest.

More than 3,200 entries from 120 publications throughout Minnesota were judged.

Managing Editor Shannon Granholm took home two awards. She received a first-place award in the human-interest category for the story, “Kourageous Karter: The boy who lived,” which was published in The Citizen, among other Press Publications’ newspapers.

Judges commented, “Riveting reading that demanded you continue to the jump page. A very emotional subject. And the photos really worked well.”

Granholm also earned second place in the social issues category with her story, “Community continues to remember fallen classmate,” which ran in The Quad Community Press, among other Press Publications newspapers.

Judges commented, “Whenever a personal story is shared, it’s memorable.

This article brings to light the tragedy of suicide and how this young man’s death impacted the community. Strong writing brings this important issue to the forefront.”

Average Minnesotan drank 678 alcoholic drinks last year With a new outlook on the upcoming year, many drinkers tend to start off by aiming to drink less alcohol.

Following a year filled with financial stress, social anxiety and a range of other pandemic-related factors, many were looking forward to more freedoms in 2021 and hoping for a return to some sense of normalcy. As more restrictions were lifted and people spent less time alone at home in 2021, were they walking to the fridge for a beer or wine top-up far less often than before?

A previous study found that the average American drinker consumed 859 standard-sized alcoholic drinks throughout 2020, equating to around 17 drinks per week.

DrugAbuse.com conducted a survey of 6,370 drinkers across America and found that overall, the average drinker consumed around 13 “standard-sized drinks” each week throughout 2021. This equates to 675 drinks for the year.

When compared to figures from 2020, it was discovered that, on average, America as a nation drank less alcohol in 2021. More specifically, 18% less than 2020’s figure of 860 drinks per person.

On a more local level, Minnesotans drank 678 standard-sized drinks in 2021 — a 16% drop from the previous year.

The CDC defines heavy drinking as 14 drinks per week for men and seven per week for women. For reference, one standard drink is either 5 ounces of wine (12% alcohol), 12 ounces of beer (5% alcohol) or 1.5 ounces of liquor (40%) like whiskey, vodka, gin or rum.

It could be that the changing circumstances of the pandemic had an impact on the fact that Americans drank less in 2021 than they did in 2020. Many people returned to work, and life began settling into more of a pattern of normalcy compared to 2020. Many were spending far less time at home and spending more time at their place of work. A return to a more normal routine

may have also had a positive impact on people’s overall mental health, therefore making them less likely to reach for alcohol.

Area business adviser is ‘encyclopedia of knowledge’

In the last few years, more and more people are deciding they don’t want to keep doing their same 9-to-5 job. Instead, they want to see if they can turn a hobby or passion into a business while being their own boss.

That’s where Lino Lakes resident Tracey Evans comes in. Evans, founder and chief empowerment officer (CEO) of Re-Vision Advisors, has been a consultant with small business owners for over 25 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in business management and accounting, and has been a small business owner since 2008 when she started First Tier Accounting.

In 2019, Evans felt compelled to start another business (Re-Vision Advisors) that would allow her to be more creative.

“I did a lot of advisory with the people I was accounting for. Since I was a trusted person in their circle, they would come to me with all kinds of stuff, so I thought I should transition into advising,” Evans explained. “Instead of just doing stuff for people, or cleaning up their messes that they created on their books, I really wanted more of a team or collaborative relationship with people.”

Evans found that her accounting background really set her apart from some of the other business advisers out there. “Business advisers know a lot about running businesses, time management and a lot of things like that, but that was almost a weakness I saw in working with them (in her prior role),” she said. “They could look over someone’s books and say something doesn’t look right, but they didn’t know how to fix it or how to change the processes.”

Re-Vision Advisors helps to build better businesses through guidance, education and support for small business owners and their staff. Evans teaches business owners how to create and maintain the ideal business environment to grow and thrive.

“My goal is to make people aware of all the different aspects of starting a business and some of the areas they want to make sure they cover,” Evans said. “I can’t tell you how many people who have said to me, ‘I wish I would have known that,’ or ‘I wish I would have met you two years ago.”

She added, “I try to guide them in the right direction and make sure that if they do make mistakes, that they are little ones and that they can get out of them easier.”

Re-Vision’s services include: financial review, budgeting and cash management; accounting process set-up and training; business plan development and startup consulting; strategic planning and goal-setting; and entrepreneurial coaching and leadership development.

Sonya Fritzinger, of Kermit’s Disposal in Forest Lake, has been one of Evans’ clients for about two years. Fritzinger was having some issues with her then-bookkeeper, and her bank suggested she talk to Evans.

“She’s been teaching me how to take care of things myself so I don’t have to rely on somebody else, and I know more about what’s going on,” Fritzinger explained. “She’s been super helpful. Honestly, she’s pretty much my go-to for any questions I have about anything to do with the business.”

Just recently, Fritzinger was going through the licensing process with a county and didn’t know about the type of bond the county was requiring for insurance. She called Evans, and Evans immediately answered her question and pointed her in the right direction, suggesting someone she needed to talk to.

“She’s an encyclopedia of knowledge. She knows all of the answers,” Fritzinger said.

Evans really enjoys the problem-solving that comes with the role and watching people learn and grow, both as a person and as a business. She especially enjoys working with startup businesses. Often she’ll help clients develop “side hustle” businesses. For example, one of her clients started making homemade caramels and turned that into a business.

After Evans’ father passed away, she found herself trying to repurpose and sell some of his items. Once the pandemic hit, she started making face masks.

The shop has also sold scarves, crystal jewelry, gnomes and more.

“It’s been really fun,” she said, adding that she has met a lot of people, even if only virtually, and learned a lot more about e-commerce.

In addition to those businesses, Evans also plans to start to venturing into the world of education by offering some classes via Centennial Community Education. She recently hosted a class about starting your own small business, which will be offered

again this summer. She also hopes to host another course about launching an Etsy business.

Curling interest continues to increase during the Olympics

The interest in the sport of curling seems to increase in many countries during the Winter Olympics. This year figures to be no exception, certainly not here, at least, while area curlers represent the USA in Beijing.

The Peterson sisters — Tara, the lead, and Tabitha, the skip — begin pursuit of the gold medal on Feb. 10 in the round-robin portion of the event.

With that in mind, if you are among those who don’t know the basics of the sport, four more sessions of the Olympic Learn to Curl Open House are scheduled the weekend of Feb. 19-20 at the curling club, located at Fogerty Arena, 9250 Lincoln St. NE, Blaine.

John Benton, director of curling operations for the club — himself a former Olympian (2010) — considers it an opportunity to get people not only interested in the sport but also to help change how they view the sport.

“With every Winter Olympics, we see public interest rise in curl-

ing,” Benton said. “Experience curling for yourself at our open house, and you’ll see the Olympic sport and athletes with a whole new appreciation.”

Four sessions were held last month and four more will be held, two on each day: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19.

On Sunday, Feb. 20, the sessions go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The first four sessions, Benton said, attracted about 150 attendees, but more are expected for the remaining four.

“We’re expecting double that many this time,” he said.

When Benton competed in the Olympics 12 years ago, he said there was only one active club — the St. Paul Club — in the Twin Cities. “Now there are five dedicated curling facilities and two or three more on the way,” he said. “That’s a lot (of growth) in 12 years.”

He’s excited about this year’s Olympics and the local representation in curling. The Peterson sisters are both University of Min-

nesota graduates. Tara is a dentist in White Bear Lake and Tabitha earned a Doctor of Pharmacy.

“It’s great to see them there, pretty exciting,” Benton said.

The instruction at the open house includes the basics — slide, sweeping and a overview on how the game is played. Cost is $10, which includes instruction, ice time and an appetizer buffet each session. The buffet is prepared

by Moe’s Ice House, which opened its on-site, full-service restaurant at the arena in December.

Benton invites everyone to “come out and try it.”

“Curling is accessible to people of all skill and interest levels.

Anybody can play and from a recreation standpoint, we like to say from ages 8 to 80,” he said.

“How many Olympic sports can say that?”

And that’s a wrap

ime sure does go by fast. I can’t believe my competitive skating season is already over. Not sure what I’m going to do on Wednesday nights now.

I have been figure skating since I was 3 years old.

I have many fond memories of spending hours at the rink to prepare for tests, competitions, and my personal favorite, shows. Most of those years I skated individually. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I tried out synchronized skating. I wasn’t a huge fan of it for whatever reason, but I grew to absolutely love it while skating on my college team at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

After graduating college, I felt a huge void. Sure, I could lace up my skates and go to open skating here or there, but it just wasn’t the same as being a part of a team. I would skate for about 15 to 20 minutes or so before thinking, “Okay, now what?”

I was so thankful when I discovered that the only adult synchronized skating team in the state, just so Out & happens to practice virtually in my backyard. Since 2016, these girls have About grown to be some of my closest friends.

As corny as it sounds, these girls have Shannon grown to become my family.

Granholm Skaters on the team this year ranged from 19 to 33. The Leather & Laces adult synchronized skating team is a part of the Northern Fusion (Maplewood) Figure Skating Club. Our season usually begins in September and runs through January or February. We typically compete in two to three competitions.

I’m so proud of my team, especially this year. We had so much thrown at us, from the ongoing pandemic, to injuries and a pregnancy. Thankfully, we had three skaters who stepped in mid-season, right before a competition, so we could still compete. At our first competition in December, the Maplewood Synchro Classic, we placed first against one other team.

Competing at the Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the middle of a pandemic was quite an experience.

Before we left, each skater had to find a test, take it within a certain time frame of leaving/checking in, and of course, test negative. We were so nervous results weren’t going to come back in time, or someone was going to test positive.

Thankfully, we got all of our results back and all stayed healthy for the competition. Skating in masks was definitely something we had to get used to as well.

We ended up placing first out of six teams. Man did it feel good to be on the top of the podium.

The long drive home was full of adventure too, as one of our three cars ended up breaking down in the middle of Wisconsin. Just like family does, one of our cars thankfully went to rescue the others.

Because of the division we are in this year, Open Adult, our team is not eligible to compete at the U.S Synchronized Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but we have competed in that competition in previous years.

Now that our competitive season is over, we plan to fundraise, volunteer and host a couple of open houses for interested skaters for next season. I can’t wait, because I already miss it.

Thankfully, I can watch the Olympics to get my figure skating fix. I really enjoyed watching the team event, which just wrapped up. A Russian pair team had a really scary fall though, which was really hard to watch.

I’m looking forward to watching all of the individual figure skating events later this week and next week. In addition to the figure skating, I’ve also loved watching the other sports too and learning more about them.

f I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself,” is a quote that has been attributed over the years to public figures ranging from baseball great Yogi Berra to composer and musician Eubie Blake, who was quoted in a wire service story on the occasion of his 96th birthday. The quote was in response to the question of how if felt to be 96. It was also noted in the article that Blake remained in good health despite the fact that “he still smokes nonfilter cigarettes and eats what he likes.”

My father recently celebrated his 95th birthday after returning to his home following a Angle of stay in the hospital and View a transitional facility. We have Paul Dols counted our blessings that he has remained active, engaged and independent into his 90’s and I have personally gained inspiration from his example as someone who has practiced lifelong learning.

The return home has been a challenging situation in varying degrees for my father, my brother (who lives the closest) and also the rest of the family.

During a recent visit, I was able to witness firsthand some of the extreme challenges of aging while

attempting to remain independent.

I also witnessed the empathy, kindness and professionalism of the front-line health care workers who were assisting with the transition. Doing my best to avoid interrupting their work, I asked questions and tried to learn as much a possible from the nurse, physical and occupational therapists and personal care attendant during their visits.

When I was alone with my father, I tried to explain that we were both learning some new things as we encountered various hurdles or challenging procedures that didn’t immediately seem logical or intuitive.

All of the health care professionals I met during my visit were professional, kind and also personable. I got the sense that they were dedicated to their profession and loved their jobs.

A personal care visit from Pam, an immigrant from South Africa, became a teachable moment in both practical and emotional ways. She cheerfully chatted and even sang while gently helping my father with a sponge bath, shave and shampoo. After she was done I offered my sincere thanks and felt a pang of emotion when she turned the tables and said, “No, I thank you. It is my privilege to come into your home and help. It is about human dignity and respect.” I had to fight back emotions again when she looked at me before she left and said, “I feel a sense of love and success when I am in this home.” Unless you’ve personally been to a hospital or ER in the last two years, or

know someone who works in health care, the most dramatic physical and emotional toll of the pandemic has been largely hidden from view. These are the good people who bear the burden, either through staffing shortages, long hours or direct contact, when surges have threatened to overwhelm the health care system.

It is recognized that mortality is universal, but the reality of accepting and planning for the ineveitable as we and our loved ones age can be daunting.

While grappling with the practical logistics and emotions of wanting to help care for an elderly parent who lives in a city three hours away, I was directed to some reaffirming and helpful information at the agingcare.com website. Resources and practical tips are readily available regardless of your family situation. Whether you’re an only child shouldering the responsibility alone or you’re part of a larger family with siblings, “emotions dating back to childhood may resurface under pressure.” Information on the site also notes that if tensions do arise, it’s best to remember that “it’s about what’s best for mom or dad.”

Finding ways to maintain dignity and respect, no matter where we are in this journey through life, doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

“My dad would drag us in when we were little to stock shoelaces, polish shoes, stock and dust the shelves. I’ve been full time for about 20 years now,” Luke said. “My sister and I will take it over from my dad sometime in the future and keep the history going.”

Luke said what he likes most about his work is the everyday challenge of new and different projects.

“I never know what’s going to come through the door. I like the challenge of just trying to figure out what’s the best way to go about fixing it and how to make it look awesome,” he said. “It’s also really fun when customers come in wanting to do something different and fun with a shoe. I had a gal come in once who wanted a lime green sole, and that was fun.”

“I’m happy to keep the family tradition alive of great customer service and good, quality work,” Luke said. “I feel like I’m slowly getting better, and getting this award is such an honor.”

SHOREVIEW — At a recent Shoreview City Council meeting, Ramsey County Commissioner Nicole Frethem declared Feb. 7, 2022, Council Member Terry Quigley Day in Ramsey County in honor of his memory.

“Terry Quigley was a delightful human being, and I am so grateful for him. I had the opportunity to sit down with him after I was elected. I reached out to every City Council member, and he was one of the few that followed up and said, 'Yes, let's meet,'” Frethem said. “We sat down and I think we talked about 90 minutes nonstop, and there was a lot of laughing.”

Mayor Sandy Martin said people have reached out to her and shared many stories about how much Quigley touched their lives.

“There's so much love out in the community that I think Terry might even be a little embarrassed to find out how people cared about him and really loved him,” Martin said. “It's been an awakening for me, and I've known Terry for over 45 years. I was amazed at the number of people who have stopped me, emailed me, and said, 'This is a man who will be missed.'”

proclamation from the city during the Feb. 7 City Council meeting in honor of Quigley.

Martin said Quigley would tell her to “toughen up,” because she was having a hard time holding back tears as she read the proclamation, which is summarized below: “The Shoreview City Council, city, staff and residents profoundly mourn the passing of Quigley on Jan. 13, 2022, while serving his sixth term as a council member.

Unfortunately, the Legislature has not done enough to reduce carbon emissions, and this puts it at odds with what Minnesotans want.

Climate change impacts mental health

A Zoom webinar was held by the Northeast Metro Climate Action (NMCA) on the impact of climate change on mental health.

“Our mission is to raise awareness of the climate crisis within our communities and work with our elected leaders to promote climate action,” said NMCA representative Steve Jorrisen.

NMCA, a volunteer-run organization, has members in North St. Paul, White Bear Lake, North Oaks, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and Arden Hills.

The webinar was led by Dr. Christie Manning, the director of sustainability at Macalester College and a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Studies.

Her research explores people’s cognitive and emotional response to messages about the climate crisis.

Manning said her interest in the impacts on mental health of climate change began about 10 years ago.

Manning shared a summary of the findings from a 2021 research review of mental health and climate change published by the American Psychological Association.

There are three categories of climate mental health impacts — trauma from extreme events (hurricanes, floods, wildfires), impacts from slower chronic changes, and climate anxiety.

Trauma from extreme events

Manning said severe weather and disaster events can create trauma, shock, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, impacts of stress on physical health and strains on social relationships.

“These events are highly traumatic. People have to rescue themselves, help their neighbors, risk their lives and they may lose their property, their loved ones and pets,” Manning said. “They certainly lose things that are very important to them — personal objects, memories and photographs.”

“This has a mental health impact. Somewhere between 7 to 50% of people will have long-lasting impacts like PTSD, anxiety, depression and substance abuse,” she added.

These events can weaken community cohesion, increase vulnerability to stress and threaten a sense of belonging.

“The disaster can change people’s sense of general safety and that the world isn’t a good and safe place to live,” Manning said. “They often can’t access schools, churches and the things they used to participate in, and this is particularly hard on children.”

Impacts from slower chronic changes

Hot weather, drought and diminished air quality can impact mood and anxiety disorders and vascular dementia.

According to Manning, heat causes physiological stress on the human body.

People can get grouchy, irritable and on edge.

“When we experience a lot of heat it lowers our quality of sleep, and these things contribute to things

Lower air quality, especially among children, can have long-term impacts on cognitive function and mental health.

Climate anxiety

Manning said climate anxiety is a concern about climate change coupled with worrying about the future that can lead to fear, anger, feelings of powerlessness, exhaustion, stress and sadness.

According to Manning, nearly half of the world’s children (about one billion) currently live in countries that are at an extremely high risk from the impacts of climate change, making them particularly vulnerable and exposing them to several mental health implications.

Audience member Nikki Bentley asked, “Do you foresee a greater need in the future for health professionals that specialize in treating individuals with climate change-related mental health issues, or do you think that type of training will be incorporated into more of the profession generally?”

Manning said she worked with a team at the Minnesota Department of Health and surveyed mental health

“Heat also leads, particularly in elderly people, to accelerated dementia. In drought-stricken areas, we see a spike in farmers committing suicide.”

Because of climate change, air quality is declining — especially in cities.

“With declining air quality, we are seeing a higher level use of emergency mental health services. It is linked to higher level of anxiety,” she said. “People are reporting lower happiness and life satisfaction, in part because when there is a air quality warning they don’t

practitioners in 2019. Eighty percent of them are encountering mental health climate change impacts, she noted.

“But most of them said it was not the first thing that people showed up for, but it’s a contributing factor in an upswell to anxiety,” Manning said.

Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt said she is an environmental activist and wants people to know that new Ramsey County Board Chair Trista Matas Castillo has made climate change action for Ramsey County a priority, and that she has an action plan.

“It’s really important to reach out, participate and to encourage, because there are times that even elected officials feel kind of alone,” Reinhardt said. “We need to hear from folks that they support what we are trying to do to make significant change because we have to.”

Tan is also a teaching assistant (TA) for one of her classes at the university. She is leaning toward a degree in computer science but is keeping her options open. She has also applied to several other colleges in addition to the University of Minnesota.

Besides excelling in academics, Tan is involved in several extracurricular activities at MVHS. She regularly participates in the Science Olympiads and, as a longtime member of the Startup MV club, has been involved in starting two companies.

She continues to stay involved with NoWay Waste, where she and a friend developed an application to monitor household consumption and prevent waste. As the current president of Startup MV club, she is helping her junior members as they work on their start-ups. She has also been an active participant in the UNICEF club, which raises funds for children, and is serving as its president.

Despite this heavy load of activities, she says does not feel stressed, because she enjoys participating in them. “I definitely have fun.

Because I spend so much time doing them, it has to be,” she said.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, she has also been able to spend more time with creative writing, a hobby she enjoys. Before high school, she also attended a Chinese language and culture school on Saturdays.

Tan’s family — her parents and three younger siblings and their two dogs, which they adopted during the COVID-19 years, have always lived in Shoreview.

According to a press release submitted by the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the president will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May. Whether she makes the final list or not, Tan said, “I have done a lot of hard work in high school but have done it for me and to help people around me. I’m going to keep doing the things I love and the activities that I’m passionate about in the future as well.’’

Congregation shares worship space with Hispanic community

What started as a Wednesday prayer meeting and Bible study in Spanish at First Presbyterian Church has evolved into a Saturday worship service for the whole family.

The White Bear church, formed in 1864, is sharing its space with ICASA, which means House of God Church. “Our purpose is to build a Christian community in order to have a relationship with God, but also be able to support each other as individuals and families in the different realities that we face daily as a Hispanic community,” explained its pastor, Alfonso Morales.

ICASA started in 2019 in White Bear Lake with the blessing of the Presbyterian congregation.

“They’ve been a great support to this new community, and we are grateful to them,” added the pastor.

The Press did a story on Morales, a credentialed Assemblies of God pastor, and ICASA in 2019 when the church was putting down roots. Morales said he had no intention of becoming a pastor, but had a change of heart in response to the love and care his family received when they fled Guatemala in ‘94 and sought political asylum in the United States.

Morales and his wife Vilma were social workers, and helped the poor in tumultuous areas of the Latin American country. When political tensions rose, they no longer felt safe and fled their homeland.

“Christian families helped us start a new life here,” Morales recalled. “We learned about God.” His church, ICASA, is an acronym that describes what the church is about. The letter I stands for the Spanish verb ir, which means go. C stands for conectar (connect). A is for adorar or worship. S stands for server (serve). A represents aprender (learn).

Morales is hoping word will spread that a Spanish service is available in the city. According to the pastor, the church mapped the area around First Presbyterian and found that there are an estimated 200 Spanish-speaking families within a few miles of its Bloom Avenue location.

His mission, the pastor noted, is to “reconcile every person with God for eternal life. We want to build Christian communities in different cities and become the same church in several communities.

We hope that each person can become what God expects from each one of us in our purpose in life.”

It’s official: Hockey Day in Minnesota for 2023 will be hosted

by White Bear Township. It was announced Saturday during Fox Sports North’s coverage of Hockey Day 2022, which was held in Mankato. White Bear Township was unveiled as the 2023 host by former Gopher hockey players John Anderson and Ryan Carter, who opened up their coats to reveal Bears jerseys.

Corey Roberts, owner of The Minnesotan in White Bear Lake, led the successful bid for Hockey Day in June 2020. Roberts played hockey for Forest Lake, and his father, Mick, was a center in White Bear Lake’s region runnerup team in 1958. He wanted to find a way to “get involved in the community.” With his hockey background, he decided to throw the town’s hat in the ring for Hockey Day Minnesota. Site exploration started in 2017.

There was no Hockey Day 2021 due to the pandemic, which meant the local group had to wait a year for its turn.

Clark, an Irondale senior, scored 37.60 allaround. She was also floor exercise champion with 9.65, and placed fourth on vault (9.375) and bars (9.425).

Alquist is one of the leaders of a team that’s 27-3 heading into sectionals and placed second in the Northwest Suburban. As a junior, he was 23-9 as and placed fourth in the super section at 182.

For the northeast metro, the Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District serves 13 different school districts, allowing high school and transitional students to take a break from their regular school day and do some hands-on learning.

ORDINANCE NO. 998 AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A FEE SCHEDULE FOR THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE AUGMENTATION OF SNAIL LAKE, EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 16, 2022 THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHOREVIEW ORDAINS: Section 1. Pursuant to Minnesota Law, and the Shoreview City Code, and upon review and analysis of City Enterprise Funds, a fee schedule for the operation and maintenance costs associated with the augmentation of Snail Lake is hereby adopted.

2022 Snail Lake Augmentation Fee Schedule (a) The fees for the operation and maintenance costs associated with the augmentation of Snail Lake be set by the Shoreview City Council (b) The Snail Lake Improvement District Board has reviewed the current Augmentation Fee Schedule and is recommending that the 2022 Snail Lake Augmentation Fee Schedule, hereto attached as Amendment 1 to Exhibit A, be adopted. (c) Upon consideration and review of the Shoreview City Council, the 2022 Snail Lake Augmentation Fee Schedule, hereto attached as Exhibit A, is hereby adopted and becomes effective February 16, 2022.

Section 2. This ordinance shall become effective one day after publication.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • Employees at the Exxon gas station in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported lottery tickets stolen from the counter Jan. 24 as the clerk was attempting to ring up the sale. The suspect f led in a waiting vehicle.

• A license plate was reported stolen Jan. 24 from a vehicle in the 3400 block of Richmond Avenue. The plate has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted another agency Jan. 24 by corraling a driver who stopped his vehicle in the middle of the westbound lanes of I-694 at Victoria Street. The male was uncooperative and f led deputies on foot. When he was hit by another vehicle, he was transported to Regions Hospital.

• A Columbia Heights man, 25, was arrested at 11:03 p.m. Jan. 24 in the 1100 block of West Royal Oaks Drive for assaulting his mother and stealing her car. He has been charged with third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm and felony theft of a motor vehicle.

• A purse and wallet were reported stolen overnight Jan. 24-25 from an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway in the 600 block of Birch Lane N. • Employees at the Speedway Station in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway on Jan. 25 reported a pack of cigarettes and two packages of cigars stolen from the counter.

• A Minneapolis woman, 21, was arrested Jan. 26 at the Shoreview Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue

N. for theft after the subject, who was well known to loss prevention personnel, was detained for shoplifting. The chronic shoplifter was observed pushing a cart containing more than $ 500 worth of unpaid merchandise out of the store and passing by all points of sale.

• Magnacharge Battery of Arden Hills reported one of its work vehicles stolen Jan. 27 while it was at a service center in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. The key to the vehicle had been taken off a wall in the work area. After the vehicle was entered into the NCIC, it was recovered unoccupied the next day in the 1300 block of Red Fox Road in Arden Hills. The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 600 block of Pinewood Drive on Jan. 27 reported a check fraudulently written on her account and cashed. Her bank refunded the money, and the investigation began.

• A resident in the 100 block of Colleen Avenue on Jan. 27 reported criminal damage to her property after the outdoor water spigot was turned on when she was away from home.

The yard was definitely f looded, and there may be water damage to the basement of her home.

• An abandoned vehicle was reported at around midnight Jan. 28 blocking traffic on I-694 and Victoria Street N. After attempts to contact the registered owner failed, the vehicle was towed.

• A road rage incident was reported Jan. 28 on County Road I and Hodgson Road.

• A Lino Lakes woman reported a purse stolen from her vehicle Jan. 28 while it was parked at Grass Lake Nature

Reserve in the 500 block of Gramsie Road, after unknown persons smashed in the rear passenger window for access.

• Deputies on Jan. 29 took custody of an abandoned bicycle with a f lat tire that had been sitting on a sidewalk in the 5100 block of Hodgson Road for a week.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen sometime over the weekend of Jan. 28-30 from a Toyota Prius while it was parked in an apartment complex lot in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. • Deputies recovered a vehicle stolen from the 100 block of Grass Lake Place Jan. 30 while they were investigating a previous stolen vehicle case in the 1300 block of County Road D Circle in Vadnais Heights. The vehicle had not been reported as stolen.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Jan. 30 recovered opened mail in the 100 block of Bridge Street. They contacted the addressee to advise them of the mail theft and how to take precautions against identity theft.

• A Shoreview man, 39, reported the tailgate soft cover of his truck cut Jan. 30 and $10,000 in work tools stolen while the truck was parked in an underground garage in the 100 block of Grass Lake Place.

Surveillance video shows suspects forcing entry into the garage and opening it to bring in another vehicle before rummaging through multiple unlocked vehicles. The case is under investigation.

as it drove out of the garage.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight Jan. 30-31 from a Toyota Highlander parked in a driveway in the 4200 block of Sylvia Lane S. • Deputies on Jan. 31 recovered a vehicle stolen out of South St. Paul on Rice Creek Parkway and 85th Avenue NE after they spotted a vehicle displaying plates that didn’t match the vehicle’s VIN on record. Both the stolen license plates and stolen vehicle were towed to the impound lot for processing.

• Approximately $ 908 in tools was reported stolen Feb. 1 from a work truck parked in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway while its owner was inside a restaurant eating lunch. Seated in the restaurant looking out the window, the victim noticed two people inside his truck. When he left the restaurant, two males wearing black hoodies got out of his truck and left the area in a blue hatchback.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight Feb. 2-3 from a Hyundai Santa Fe parked in an apartment lot in the 4000 block of Chatsworth Street N. • A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight Feb. 2-3 from a Subaru Tribeca parked in an apartment lot in the 3500 block of Owasso Street.

• Approximately $2,400 worth of tools was reported stolen overnight Feb. 2-3 from a vehicle parked in an apartment lot in the 3500 block of Owasso Street.

• A Minneapolis dog walker reported the rear driver’s side window and door frame of her vehicle damaged Feb. 3 while it was parked at Snail Lake Regional Park in the 4100 block of Snail Lake Blvd.

The complainant said it didn’t appear any items were stolen from the vehicle.

• A New Brighton woman reported the driver’s side window of her vehicle broken in as it was parked in a lot in the 4000 block of Rice Street while she was at work Feb. 4.

Nothing is known to have been taken.

• A West St. Paul woman reported a work bag containing a wallet with credit cards, cash and a firearm stolen Feb. 4 from her vehicle, which was parked in the 3400 block of Lexington Avenue while she was in a store buying f lowers.

The front driver’s side window was smashed in for access. The victim canceled her credit cards after a female suspect tried to use one of the credit cards in Lakeville.

• A St. Paul woman, 46, was arrested for DUI at 12:36 p.m. Feb. 5 in the 400 block of Highway 96 after deputies were dispatched out on a report of a vehicle dangerously weaving in and out of traffic and meandering into the opposite lane. Deputies located the vehicle and its driver in a grocery store parking lot as the motorist was walking away from the vehicle with a child passenger. After deputies administered field sobriety tests and took the motorist to the law enforcement center without incident, a relative arrived to pick up the child.

• A Mission Hills, California, man and a Rice, Minnesota, woman reported being swindled Feb. 5 after repair services on multiple vehicles were promised but never provided in the 3500 block of Owasso Street. The victims reported that the suspect f led the area when deputies were called.

At 11:01 p.m. Jan. 24, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 1100 block of West Royal Oaks Drive on a domestic assault and motor vehicle theft report.

On arrival, deputies located the

victim at the bottom of the stairs in her residence. She told deputies she thought she had broken her collarbone after her son had pushed her against the wall at the top of the stairs, which caused her to take flight. The altercation began when the victim and her son had had an argument; her son then went upstairs to destroy things in his room. When she asked him to stop, he pushed her down the stairs, she said.

After allegedly pushing his mother down the stairs, the subject told his girlfriend to call 911 and then collected his mother’s car keys

without permission. His mother said she told her son not to take the vehicle, and noted that he did not have a valid driver’s license.

The victim asked deputies to enter her vehicle as stolen, and it was registered with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. Early the next morning, Lino Lakes police officers spotted the vehicle driving around their city and pursued the vehicle into Shoreview, where they pulled it over.

The vehicle’s driver told officers he knew why he was stopped and that he was going to "return" the vehicle.

He left the traffic stop without

authorization and drove slowly for the remaining two blocks to his residence on West Royal Oaks Drive, where he was promptly arrested.

The subject has prior felony convictions for drugs in 2020, motor vehicle theft in 2019, receiving stolen property in 2019, motor vehicle theft in 2017 and fleeing police in a motor vehicle in 2017.

Meanwhile, back at Regions Hospital, a medical examination confirmed the victim had a broken collarbone.

Pruning helps prevent spread of diseases Late winter is the ideal time to prune branches on trees, according to experts with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). When done correctly, pruning in the winter is less risky to tree health.

“Now through early March — just before trees come out of dormancy — is a great time to get outside and prune your trees,” said Jennifer Teegarden, DNR cooperative forestry outreach specialist. “As trees become active in spring, they are able to quickly heal the pruning wound.”

Wintertime pruning minimizes the risk that an open pruning wound could invite pests or diseases.

Pruning oak trees should be avoided from April through July. That’s when beetles that can spread oak wilt are feeding on tree sap, which is present at new wounds.

Tree pruning tips: • Trim branches before they grow to 2 inches in diameter to minimize wound size and damage to the surrounding bark.

• Don’t cut flush to the trunk.

Preserving the branch collar (the area where the trunk slightly bulges around the branch) allows

the wound to heal quickly and not decay.

• Use the three-cut method for larger branches to minimize damage to the bark. Information on this method can be found on the pruning trees and shrubs page of the University of Minnesota Extension website (tinyurl. com/2p8c7bhv).
