Educating parents about too much screen time BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR

Too much screen time for children ages birth to 5 may affect a child's brain development, fi ne motor skills, development of patience and more, according to Centennial Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE). ECFE representatives want to bring up the topic now so parents are prepared and ready to have important conversations once their children become teenagers. “Through our work with parents in ECFE, we have found that they have a lot of questions about screen time and the impacts it has on young children,” ECFE Coordinator Sarah Holmboe explained. “We felt this was an important topic to cover at this age because the more parents know about screen time now, the more informed they will be as they set boundaries and limits on screen time as their children grow up with devices. We want parents to feel empowered and confident as they make decisions as a family about their (children’s) screen time use.” Holmboe said while she was working with middle school children at a former job, she was approached by a guidance counselor, who said they were experiencing a lot of screen time issues and cyberbul-

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about a potentially contaminated batch of heroin following a recent series of overdoses. On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Sheriff's Office responded to two heroin overdoses in Shoreview and one in White Bear Township, all within a six-hour period. The overdoses were reported at 8:13 a.m., 11:25 a.m. and 1:42 p.m., respectively. Deputies administered Narcan (naloxone) to all three of the victims. Two were revived. As of press time, the condition of the third individual was still under evaluation. The close timing of those overdoses has the Sheriff's Office worried

With the rise in popularity of technology, there is more and more research to support that too much screen time can have negative impacts on child development.

lying. Holmboe then put together a presentation for teenagers and their parents but wished the message would have been given to those parents sooner. “This is the age where you can really start preparing for those conversations before your kids become 16 and addicted to devices

and out of control with them,” she said. “I think this is a great age to start thinking about how you are using screens and devices in your home and fi nding a better balance with that.” According to a NBC News report SEE SCREEN TIME, PAGE 3

Voters throughout the state have been casting their ballots since absentee voting for the Presidential Nomination Primary opened Jan. 17. The primary will help determine both the Democratic and Republican party candidates for the November general election. To participate, voters must choose between a Democratic and Republican ballot. As of Feb. 28, at least 70,334 total absentee ballots have been requested, including 60,503 Democratic and 9,811 Republican ballots. Of the 36,726 absentee ballots that have been returned and accepted, 30,932 are Democratic and 5,787 are Republican. Minnesota voters since 2014 have had the option of vote-from-home, or “no-excuse absentee” voting. All county election offices throughout the state also offer in-person absentee voting, commonly referred to as “early voting.” Since 2014, Minnesota voters have increasingly used vote-from-home and early in-person voting to cast their ballots.
