The Shoreview Community Foundation board is looking for youth members to contribute ideas to its philanthropic efforts — and they will get to vote.

The foundation plans to add three new youth board members to its philanthropic fabric this spring, said Steven Krueger, from the board’s communications committee.

“This is a fairly unique idea that one of our board members came up with and we are implementing,” Krueger noted. The board unanimously supported board Secretary Helen Nelson’s idea.

“Our goal is to connect the generosity of the community with the evolving needs,” Nelson said. “As a former teacher, I know the significance of having the voice and the input from the youth.”

Voters league opposes 2020 census citizenship question

For the fi rst time since 1950, citizenship may be a question asked on the 2020 census. The White Bear Lake Area League of Women Voters takes issue with that proposition.

The league is concerned that undocumented immigrants may fear to respond to the census, which could lead to an inaccurate count of the number of people living in Minnesota, said Liz Lauder, of Shoreview. This could affect fair representation, she noted.

If the census comes up short, Minnesota could lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, said Kathy Tomsich, of North Oaks. Minnesota would also receive less federal money for things funded based on population sizes, like roads and schools, she added.

The local league hosted a guest speaker from the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota to further explain the issue at White Bear Lake City Hall Feb. 21.

“We are desperate to ensure that numbers in certain places are being accounted for accurately,” said attorney Mirella Ceja-Orozco. As Minnesota’s rural population decreases, Minnesota could lose a congressional seat in northern Minnesota, she noted. Minnesota’s population has been decreasing in comparison to other states and it was only a few thousand people away from losing its eighth U.S. Representative seat to another state following the 2010 census.

In 2016, Minnesota received about $15.5 billion in federal funding that was based on 2010 census data, according to a report by the George Washington SEE 2020 CENSUS, PAGE 9

A year ago during the fi rst week of February, Sting the greyhound spent a lonely night at the library when no one came to his Ramsey County Library Paws to Read session. He became famous after a post for reading pals went viral and was fully booked after that. This year, he was scheduled to read with children Feb. 6 but didn't make it.

Sting passed away Feb. 5 after a battle with lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes, said his owner, John Muellner of Hugo.

Sting turned 11 in January, the month Muellner also noticed his lymph nodes were enlarged. He took him to the vet and learned Sting had lymphoma, common in greyhounds his age. The lymph nodes grew larger over the next two weeks and

by Feb. 5, Sting was having a hard time breathing.

“I knew it was time,” Muellner said.

Sting had his last reading at the White Bear Lake library Jan. 23. Fans have been making memorial donations to the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries in his honor, said Executive Director Cyndi Cook.

Sting was featured on the Today Show last year and received reading requests from across the country and the world. He became booked solid for several months by local children wanting

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Conservation forum on algal blooms Ramsey County Public Works will host a conservation forum on harmful algal blooms from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, March 18. Potential water quality challenges in Ramsey County will be discussed by professionals. German dinner at the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter The Shoreview Einhausen Sister City Association will host a German dinner and program at the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter on “The Berlin Wall – 30 Years After” given by Claudia Aurand, director of language services

Snowball effect

S

now cancellations are getting out of control, snowballing down a slippery slope of flakiness.

Before I address this issue I feel is a growing concern for the Minnesota economy, let me say this isn’t about schools. When in doubt, young students should not be outside waiting for buses in deep snow or extreme temperatures.

This is about adults, the Minnesota workforce.

I’ve felt a growing concern about the sheer number of work, government and community related events canceled due to snow and ice across the Twin Story Cities this winter.

Sara Marie Moore There is a snowball effect to weather cancellations. It seems that the more events are canceled, the more events are canceled. People cave to peer pressure to cancel events and meetings due to weather. People start to assume that events are going to be canceled when they see a flake of snow.

People start to close up shop because no one is around. People start to not show up to work.

As adults, we should model dedication and confidence in our work and even our volunteerism, despite the weather. Everyone who has passed a Minnesota driver’s test should be able to practice navigating through several inches of snow. When events are continuously canceled, people get less practice driving in the snow. When leaders continue to cancel meetings or close places due to snow, it creates a chilling effect on the society’s view of life and work.

Adults really don’t need snow days. While I understand that the purpose behind the Minneapolis Regional Chamber and St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Snow Day for Adults” earlier this month was to boost local businesses that saw a drop in sales during the polar vortex, the idea doesn’t create a mindset that supports the overall economy.

Just because children didn’t go to school during the extreme temperatures doesn’t mean “Adults should have a chance to relive the memories of their youth with some outdoor fun or, alternatively, spend generously doing some shopping, eating and drinking at the many fine establishments around the Twin Cities,” as stated in the press release.

Besides, most workers don’t have the privilege to skip work. “After four days of kids home from school, it’s time for the region’s adults to have their turn,” misunderstands the lives of most workers.

Many hourly workers were likely itching to get back to making money after having to stay home to watch their children. “It only seems fair to give adults one day off after most kids have had three days off this week,” seems immature coming from city business leaders. Most workers need to show up or important jobs won’t be done. What if a large group of nurses or construction workers had taken the adult snow day seriously? Care for the sick and elderly would have been neglected and big ticket projects would have been stalled.

Minnesota’s relationship with the snow appears to be taking a turn for the worse. Even a decade ago, it was not normal for so many things to be canceled due to snow in Minnesota. It wasn’t normal for people to question whether something was happening or not due to the weather. It wasn’t normal for businesspeople to encourage people to skip work.

It’s not too late to reevaluate the shifting relationship with the snow. Minnesota’s leaders could look to the dedicated workers who show up no matter what for inspiration. They are the economy’s anchor as it precariously slips and slides on the snow.

Suburban poverty is outpacing that of the inner cities here in the Twin Cities and food insecurity amongst our seniors is continuing to rise. Last year, the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf received 26,000 individual requests for help and gave out nearly 700,000 pounds of food and hygiene items – up nearly 50

percent in the past three years.

A successful March campaign is critical for our food shelf to be able to continue to provide important services to our neighbors in need. Thanks to Minnesota Foodshare a percentage of all pounds of food and dollars received from Feb. 25 through April 8 will be matched by Minnesota Foodshare.

The more that’s donated the bigger the match! Non-perishable food items and hygiene items are accepted at the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, or by appointment.

Most needed items include peanut butter, chicken noodle soup, hamburger and tuna helpers, canned meals, flour, sugar, oil, and laundry detergent.

Successful regions invest in transit.

The A Line, providing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul has been so successful, I’m glad to see the proposed addition of 10 new BRT lines, including suburban locations, signaling a commitment to increased service and transit ridership. The introduction of more electric buses is a welcome step towards energy efficiency.

For too long, we’ve relied on shortterm fi xes to avoid the looming fiscal cliff; a $250 million deficit projected over the next decade. The current level and means of funding won’t allow the region to maintain, let alone expand, service in a way that meets our growing need for mobility and transportation options.

Over the next weeks at the Legislature we’ll discuss the funding package the Governor has proposed to address these needs, including modest increases in the seven-county sales tax and motor vehicle sales tax, bonding and continued financial support from the county transit sales tax.

In addition, the Governor’s proposal would give Metro Mobility its own funding allocation. That’s significant because it would provide financial support to this critical, mandated transportation service for people with disabilities, without making it compete for funding with other transit service.

Today, the metro area is home to more than 3 million people. By 2040, we expect to grow to more than 3.7 million.

Governor Walz is proposing significant change and investments that are long overdue and reflect the changes we’re experiencing within our region and society.

I applaud the administration’s initiative and commitment to mobility and encourage other residents to support the Governor on this important issue and urge their legislators to do the same.

I recently attended my fi rst “Chat with Kelly” at the Shore 96 Restaurant in Shoreview. Rep. Kelly Moller is holding monthly chat sessions with her constituents on the fourth Sunday of the month during the legislative session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Shore 96. I attended February’s session where about 20 people came to hear what Rep. Moller has been doing at the Capitol, ask questions, and share ideas and concerns in an informal discussion format.

I have lived in this area for 30 years and we’ve never had a representative create an opportunity like this. Rep. Moller’s outreach is impressive and appreciated. Kudos to her for making the time to interact with her constituents face-to-face on a regular basis.

Rep. Moller came across as genuinely interested in what we had to say, and she provided us with lots of information regarding current and upcoming proposed legislation. She didn’t

talk around the issues like some politicians. She was straightforward, knowledgeable and honest in responding to questions and concerns, which was quite refreshing.

I thank Rep. Moller for these informal chats — they are a great idea. I hope to attend more in the future.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

North Oaks • A student was threatened by another via Instagram at Chippewa Middle School on Valentine’s Day. The case was referred to the County Attorney’s office for review of charges. No other information was released.

• A theft by swindle was reported the morning of Feb. 22 at a bank in the 900 block of Village Center Drive. The loss was $3,000 and an investigation is underway. No other details were released.

Shoreview • Deputies investigating a report of a vehicle parked in the 4900 block of the Hodgson Connection for an hour with lights on and the engine running the night of Feb. 5 found an unconcious 26-yearold woman behind the wheel. The Burnsville resident, whose pants were around her ankles after she urinated on the floor, awakened and slapped the PBT (preliminary breath test) device out of a deputy’s hand when he attempted to check her blood-alcohol level. The woman, who has two prior alcohol-related convictions, was booked into jail on a charge of second-degree DWI.

• A Minneapolis man who mistook the groomed ski trail for a road at the Grass Lake Nature Reserve the afternoon of Feb. 8 suffered a towing bill to have his vehicle removed after the 36-year-old became stuck in the snow.

• A prowler broke out the rear driver’s side window of a vehicle parked at a hotel in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road overnight Feb. 9 and made off with a backpack filled with clothing.

• The rear driver’s side window of a vehicle parked at the YMCA in the 3700 block of Lexington Avenue was broken out the night of Feb. 11. A tote containing a pair of boots and clothing went missing.

• A 44-year-old Coon Rapids woman was arrested the evening of Feb. 11 at Harriet Avenue and Owasso Street for second-degree blood alcohol test refusal.

• A burglary occurred over the weekend of Feb. 22 in the 4200 block of Weston Way while the owners were out of town. A television, computers and a vehicle went missing. An investigation continues.

• A surveillance video showed a man with a long history of felony convictions exiting a stolen car on Feb. 22 in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue. The 27-year-old out of Minneapolis was booked into jail on a felony charge of possession of stolen property.

• A drunken driver was arrested near midnight Feb. 23 at County Road E and Lexington Avenue. The 39-year-old local man was booked into jail on a fourth-degree DWI charge.

• A burglar broke a basement window of a residence in the 4900 block of Turtle Lane West and made off with a television and a number of tools. The burglary occurred between Feb. 5 and Feb. 8 while the residents were out of town.

• A 2007 Chevy Tahoe was reported stolen Feb. 12 in the 100 block of Dennison Ave. No suspects.

• Cash and clothing went missing Feb. 15 from a residence in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. The victim suspects her ex-boyfriend.

• A counterfeit $50 was passed at a gas station Feb. 6 in the 3500 block of Lexington Avenue. The fake money was turned over to the U.S. Secret Service.

• Who’s that knocking at my door? An unknown, drunken male was transported from the 500 block of County Road E to Regions Hospital at 1:30 in the morning Feb. 23.

• A 38-year-old woman was assaulted by a male the afternoon of Feb. 16 in the 1500 block of Hall Street.

The 48-year-old was cited for disorderly conduct, assault and domestic assault.

• A gunshot victim arrived at Unity Hospital at 4 a.m. on Feb. 24, saying she had been shot accidentally in the 1900 block of Bluestem Lane. No other details were available.

• Batteries were taken from a vehicle parked in the 500 block of Shorewood Park Road over the weekend of Feb. 16. No suspects.

• In that same block, a catalytic converter was removed from a vehicle in the wee hours of Feb. 17.

• A 29-year-old female was arrested Feb. 24 in the 1000 block of Mercury Drive on a disorderly conduct charge and booked into jail. No other details were released. An investigation is underway.

• A deputy on routine patrol came upon a vehicle stuck in a snowbank at Lexington Avenue and County Road I just before midnight Feb. 17. The

The night watch: Keeping impaired drivers off the streets

He patrols the streets of White Bear Lake looking for drivers weaving over the line or forgetting to stop at a stop sign — early in the morning Feb. 9 he found one that blew a 0.09.

White Bear Lake Police Officer Antonio Brown, a dedicated DWI enforcer, started his 11 1/2-hour shift the evening prior. He doesn't respond to 911 calls with the rest of the overnight shift. He spends his time on the lookout for impaired drivers to protect area residents from tragic accidents.

It was minus 9 degrees just after 8 p.m. Feb. 8 when he pulled over a driver weaving over the line near County Road E and Highway 61. It was a distracted driver who admitted she had been on her phone. He gave her a warning.

“I rarely give tickets,” he said.

“Next time, I would give a ticket.”

Brown said he usually gives people a warning for bad driving behavior and distracted driving. He logs it in the department’s records. If it’s a habit, he will probably run into them doing it again. If he clearly sees someone texting and driving or they are defensive, he will give them a ticket.

“A teacher yelled at me because he was checking email on his way home,” Brown remembered. It is illegal to use the internet on a device while driving. People often blame Brown for their own bad choices when he is just trying to keep the community safe. But most people

understand when he explains to them that he is out looking for impaired drivers.

A person he arrested for DWI awhile back even recently sent him a letter thanking him for arresting him. “He appreciated the way I treated him and was checking himself into treatment,” Brown said. “I have the motto of ‘treat others like you want to be treated.’”

At about 9:30 p.m., Brown pulled over a driver for not signaling a turn. When he came back to the squad with the driver’s license, he noticed it had been revoked for a prior DWI. The man wasn’t supposed to be driving. He then

searched his computer for more on the driver’s background.

“We have a felony warrant,” he said. Brown called for a backup from the regular night shift officers. Brown and Officer Brian Link approached the vehicle together to make an arrest. The man, wanted for charges of felony drug possession, was compliant and was swiftly taken to the Ramsey County Detention Center in St. Paul.

At 2:30 a.m., Brown found a man who appeared impaired near White Bear Avenue and I-694. Brown completes field sobriety tests with those who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or narcotics before taking them to the police department for a breath test. The man’s alcohol concentration level was 0.09; the legal limit is 0.08. Brown took another trip to jail.

Brown has been an officer strictly dedicated to DWI enforcement only since last fall, when the White Bear Lake Police Department received a $95,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to fund a dedicated position.

Brown has worked in White Bear for seven years and would often volunteer to work overtime during traffic safety campaigns. He was a DWI Enforcer All-Star twice, an honor given annually by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to the state’s officers with the highest number of DWI arrests. Due to his work, White Bear Lake was the only suburban city in Ramsey County last year to receive the grant fund-

ed by the National Highway Safety Administration.

Now that Brown’s time is dedicated to his public safety passion, he has a goal to fi nish within the top 10 in the state. In 2018, he was 29th statewide, with 73 DWI arrests. He also aims to beat the White Bear Lake Police Department’s annual DWI arrest record for a single officer — 99. Competition motivates him to do good, he said.

Brown’s passion for traffic safety stems from personal tragedy. When he was a child, his great-grandmother was struck by someone running a stop sign and died from her injuries. His mother was also critically injured in a highway accident.

An uncle and basketball coach who were cops inspired him to pursue law enforcement as a career.

Experiences on the job and seeing people texting and driving while he is driving his children around off duty has amped up his passion for traffic safety. During his fi rst year as an officer in White Bear Lake, he responded to a bad traffic accident involving drunk driving. He’s seen the extremes — a wrong-way headon collision two years ago on I-694 involving a drunk driver who was at a 0.36 alcohol concentration level.

Brown works overnights, usually three days in a row, often on weekends. Due to the grant requirements, he also works peak holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day. When he’s not patrolling the roads, he is a volunteer youth football and basketball coach.

The top 10 programs that received the most funds from these dollars were Medicaid, federal student loans, highway planning and construction, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Medicare Part B, low to moderate income housing loans, the Federal Pell Grant Program, temporary assistance for needy families, Section 8 housing choice vouchers, and special education grants.

If the count comes up short, Minnesota could lose up to $1,500 in federal funding per missed person per year, according to the Minnesota State Demographic Center. There are an estimated 100,000 undocumented immigrants in Minnesota, according to Ceja-Orozco’s colleague Sylvie Bisangwa, policy advocate at the Minnesota Law Center. If no undocumented immigrants responded to the census, that could add up to a potential $150 million per year loss of federal funds for Minnesota.

“We need to know,” Ceja-Orozco noted. “I want to make sure my road is clear and the school has funds.”

Ceja-Orozco said the citizenship question on the census would likely affect whether undocumented immigrants choose to respond to the census.

“That drastically changes the way someone might view the whole process,” she said. The 2020 census is planned to be available online, but home visits may be made to those who don’t respond. Ceja-Orozco said undocumented immigrants may question whether the census is related to ICE (U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) in today’s immigration climate.

“There are a growing number of people fearful of ICE,” she said.

“They may not know who (the census data collectors) are and what they want.”

Ceja-Orozco is also concerned undocumented immigrants would worry the data could be used against them in the future. “It is supposed to remain confidential, but I wonder if it could be subpoenaed if required,” she noted. In the past, census data has been kept from the Internal Revenue Service and ICE. “Now that we have an administration that cares

If someone does not respond to all the questions on a census form it is not counted, she added.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross planned to add it to the 2020 census, but that action was blocked by a federal judge. The Commerce Department has appealed that decision.

New study examines barriers, attitudes and motivators toward participating in 2020 census The U.S. Census Bureau released results Jan. 24 from the 2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes and Motivators Study (CBAMS). The national survey and series of focus groups were designed to better understand the nation’s attitudes toward the 2020 Census, potential barriers that may inhibit participation and possible motivators of responding.

“Every part of the 2020 Census is grounded in research,” Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham said. “An accurate and complete census relies on U.S. households responding to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail, and the communications campaign is key to achieving that.”

This extensive research expands similar work done ahead of the last census and shows how to reach all populations, including segments of the population that are historically hard to count, and which types of messages may be most effective. That work is then reinforced by the testing of the advertising creative to be used throughout the campaign. The study includes two reports — “2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes, and Motivators Study (CBAMS) Final Survey Report” and “2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes, and Motivators Study (CBAMS) Final Focus Group Report.”

Final Survey Report The 2020 CBAMS survey reached a nationally representative sample of 50,000 households in early 2018, with nearly 17,500 responses (about a 35 percent response rate) to determine who intends to respond to the census and what attitudes, barriers and motivators exist about the 2020 Census. This is considered a well above average sample size and response rate than the industry standard for communications campaign research. Here are some of the highlights: • Two-thirds of respondents are “extremely likely” or “very likely” to fill out a census form.

• Many people were unfamiliar with the census, with only 33 percent being “extremely” or “very” familiar. Knowledge about the purpose and process of the census was uneven across groups.

• The analysis revealed five barriers that might prevent people from participating in the census: concerns about data privacy and confidentiality, fear of repercussions, distrust in all levels of government, feeling that it doesn’t matter if you are counted and

Chippewa Middle School choir students ‘Adopt a Soldier’ Each year for the past 12 years, the Chippewa Middle School Choir has adopted a soldier as a way to support the community.

This year’s soldier this year is Joe Tiedi. Joe’s mom, Kim Tiedi, works in Chippewa Middle School Student Services.

Students have been writing to Joe for three years. Joe graduated from Irondale High School in June 2015 and left July 2015 for boot camp in San Diego. Marine Corporal Tiede is with the Motor Pool and currently on his second deployment overseas. The Marines want to ensure the safety of the soldiers, so his current location remains a secret. Corporal Tiede hopes to be back in the States in April.

The soldier always has some kind of a connection to Chippewa Middle School — a past Chippewa student, a child of a Chippewa staff member, a spouse, sibling or cousin of a Chippewa student, etc.

The students learn about the country their soldier has been stationed in and about the life of a soldier who is fighting to protect the country. We post pictures and maps in our choir room. They have learned about dressing in a 60-pound combat uniform in 120-degree Fahrenheit weather in Afghanistan, eating MRE (military ready-to-eat) meals and checking your boots for camel spiders the size of a dinner plate.

and each student writes three letters per year each fall, winter and spring, which means the soldier gets about 600 letters a year. The letters are usually shared with other members of the troop. One soldier even used over 200 letters to hang like wallpaper all over his tent in the desert. If the soldier is allowed to get packages, students send care packages that include playing

cards, beef jerky, hard candies, magazines, balls, cookies, eye drops, hand sanitizer, puzzles, DVDs, gum, PopTarts and granola bars.

The Adopt a Soldier program gives students a chance to understand the sacrifice service men and women give each day to keep Americans safe. All of the soldiers have come to meet the choir students when they are home on

leave and have told amazing stories of their heroism and allegiance to the country.

Mounds View Public Schools alumna participates in first all-female flyover Lt. Amanda Lee, an alumna of Mounds View Public Schools, participated in the fi rst ever all-female flyover last month in Maynardville, Tennessee.

Officially referred to as a “Missing Man Flyover,” the tribute Feb. 2 was part of the funeral service for retired Navy Captain Rosemary Mariner, who passed away on Jan. 24 following a long fight with cancer.

After she completed flight training in 1974, Mariner was designated a naval aviator and received her Wings of Gold to become the Navy’s fi rst female jet pilot, flying the A-4E/L “Skyhawk” and the A-7E “Corsair II”. She also was the fi rst female military aviator to achieve command of an operational air squadron. During Operation Desert Storm, Mariner commanded Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron Thirty-Four (VAQ-34). In 1982, she reached yet another milestone: she was among the fi rst women to serve aboard a U.S. Navy warship, USS Lexington, and qualify as a Surface Warfare Officer.

Mariner retired from the U.S. Navy in 1997 after obtaining the rank of Captain. She logged 17 carrier-arrested landings, or “traps,” and completed more than 3,500 flight hours in 15 different aircraft.

The Missing Man Flyover is a special tribute that honors the service of aviators who have died serving their country. The maneuver features four aircraft flying above the funeral service in formation as one of the aircraft leaves the formation and climbs vertically into the heavens.

All of the aviators who participated in the flyover are from squadrons based at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana flying F/A-18E/F “Super Hornets.”

“I had an incredible opportunity provided to me to earn a commission while serving as an active duty enlisted service member,” Lee said. “I am truly humbled to have come full circle, and now fly the very aircraft that I used to work on as a maintainer.”

Lee graduated from Irondale High School. While attending the University of Minnesota in Duluth and working at UPS, Lee decided to enlist in the Navy. She graduated from Recruit Training Command in 2007. Her enlisted career as an aviation electronics technician encompassed a sea tour at the VFA-136 Knighthawks, advancement to Second Class Petty Officer, as well as her selection into the Seaman-to-Admiral (STA-21) Commissioning Program.

Lt. Lee received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at Old Dominion University and earned her commission in August 2013. She reported to Pensacola, Florida, that year to begin flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in April 2016 in Kingsville, Texas.

KIDS ABILITIES: Shoreview center gives children growth opportunities FROM PAGE 1

Gunnar, 2, of Centerville, has Down syndrome and utilizes all three therapy services at Kids Abilities. Gunnar’s mother, Gina Schmittdiel, explained that Gunnar has hypotonia, which is a state of low muscle tone (the amount of tension or resistance to stretch in a muscle), which often involves reduced muscle strength.

“Jenny and Heather (Haider, occupational therapist) work with him together. It works really well for him because Heather can motivate him with a puzzle piece or something fi ne motor, and Jenny can work on his large motor stuff, whether it is standing on one foot or balancing,” Schmittdiel explained. She said the therapists give her tools she can work on at home, too.

Kids Abilities has helped Gunnar to be strong before, during and after a couple of surgeries. Last June, Gunnar underwent open-heart surgery for atrial septal defect (ASD), a birth defect that causes a hole in the wall between the heart’s upper chambers.

In November, Gunnar had another surgery after his sternum broke.

“I wouldn’t have known what to do and I probably would have babied him, but they said he was strong and could do this,” Schmittdiel said. “He did awesome. He was out of the hospital (after heart surgery) in three days, which is unheard of. (After the surgery in November), he was out of the hospital in one day and back to therapy in no time.”

Renesmee, 5, of White Bear Lake, has Down Syndrome and hearing loss. She utilizes all three therapies Kid Abilities offers.

“Kids Abilities has helped her immensely. She learns so much here. If it wasn’t for the therapy she gets here, I think she would be very behind from the other kids,” said Renesmee’s mother, Kim Madson.

The staff is amazing. They work wonderfully with her. Renesmee has some impulse issues, and they have no problems dealing with her and controlling her. I have always had a positive experience here.”

They assist the community of Familias Especiales, a nonprofit organization that works with children with disabilities and their families, by fabricating seating systems for wheelchairs, fitting walkers and assisting with other equipment needs.

Therapists also work in the local schools with teachers and provide home visits to educate families.

College dreams come true

White Bear Lake Area High School 2018 graduate Sean Sieleni was accepted into the Bethel University Inclusive Learning and Development (BUILD) program. He is holding a blanket made by a high school friend’s family when they found out he wanted to go to Bethel.

White Bear Lake Area High School 2018 graduate Sean Sieleni received a dream college acceptance letter that put him in tears last week.

Sieleni got into the Bethel University Inclusive Learning and Development (BUILD) program.

“That’s my favorite college,” he said. Sieleni said he’s excited to meet new friends and be part of the Bethel family this fall.

It’s the only four-year college in the state where students with intellectual disabilities can live on campus and take mainstream classes.

The BUILD program, begun in 2015, is a two-year comprehensive transition program, said Director Dawn Allen. About half of classes are core requirements of the program in which students work on independent living and job skills. Students can also choose from electives that are common to all Bethel students.

Students live in dorms and can participate in clubs, extracurriculars and inclusive bowling or basketball teams.

“It really meets what most students are thinking of when they think ‘I want to go to college,’” Allen said. The cost of the program is the same as for all Bethel students.

Not all students with intellectual disabilities are accepted every year.

Sieleni was among 16 students accepted this year from 41 applications, which are reviewed to determine whether the student’s goals match the program and whether the supports offered are the right fit for the students.

Sieleni’s mom Leslie videoed Sean’s reaction when he opened his acceptance letter Feb. 15. She posted it online and it quickly went viral.

“It’s kind of what parents who have kids with special needs need to see every once in a while,” she said. “It’s just a reminder that everything is possible.”

“I know that they are going to watch out for him and make sure he is safe.”

Sean has been working at Kowalski’s this last year while waiting to get into the program. “He’s had the dream of going to college and living on his own and buying a house,” Leslie said. “I hope what he learns at Bethel helps him reach his next goals.”

The program has changed Bethel University for the better, Allen noted.

When it first started four years ago, a lot of people kind of patted Bethel on the back for doing a good job for having a program for students with special needs. However, people quickly realized that the new students were the ones who were blessing Bethel.

“The conversation shifted to what a blessing this is to have these students be a part of our community,” Allen remembered. “It has been something that has enhanced the community.”

As a Christian college, Bethel embraces the program because it is about celebrating diversity in the body of Christ, she added.

Mounds View wrestler Chase Dressel was a state runner-up and teammates Nick Dunagan and Rowan Morgan each placed third, capping one of the Mustangs’ best seasons.

The trio of seniors led a contingent of 10 Mustang qualifiers for the state Class AAA tournament, the most in the history of the program, Friday and Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

Dressel, who plans to play college football, reached the 170-pound finals with a pin against Jack Stanton of Northfield in 3:50, and decisions over Matt Boyum, Chaska, 9-1, and Grant Hendren, Lakeville South, 7-2.

In the championship match, Dressel lost to Riley Habisch of Buffalo, 3-0. He fi nished the season 43-4.

Dunagan, at 145 pounds, cruised past Brad Patnode of Brainerd 12-1 and Caleb Talamantes of Albert Lea 11-0. He lost in the semifinals to Brady Gross of Apple Valley 3-1, beat Scott Springer of Anoka 4-2, and, in the third-place match, pinned Luke Peterson of Farmington in 3:51. He finished 49-4.

Morgan, at 195 pounds, went 5-1 with four pins.

He pinned Quinn Sell of Minnetonka, in 2:31, then got pinned by Peter Moen, Bemidji, in 3:40.

Mounds View swimmers on podium in 4 events at state

The Mounds View swimmers had four podium fi nishes at the state Class AA meet Friday and Saturday, after qualifying in eight events at Section 4AA on Feb. 22-23.

Mustang junior Isaac Pan swam in three state fi nals, placing sixth in individual medley with 1:54.42 (after a strong 1:53.57 prelim) and eighth in the butterfly with 50.91 (after a 50.36 prelim), along with helping the 200 freestyle relay team place fourth.

The 200 free team of Will Goldman, Ian Boyles, Pan, and Will Quackenbush medaled with a time of 1:26.35 that broke the school record of 1:26.81 set in 2013.

Quackenbush, a junior, reached fi nals in the 200 freestyle, placing eighth (1:42.58).

He also reached consolation fi nals in the 500 freestyle, placing 16th (4:54.15) after a 4:44.99 prelim.

The Mustangs placed 12th at the state meet, after placing second in sectionals behind Stillwater.

At sectionals, qualifying for state, Pan won the IM (1:56.96) and placed second in butterfly (51.69). Quackenbush took second in the 200 (1:42.79) and 500 (4:46.82). Martini won the 100 freestyle (48.64). Goldman took second in breaststroke (59.40).

The 200 free relay took second (1:26.94).

Also reaching section fi nals and placing third were Martini in the 200 free and Boyles in 50. Placing fi fth were Goldman in 50 free and Boyles in 100 free. Placing seventh were Matthew Shen in the 500 free, Sam Magnuson in backstroke, Ted Tomczyk in diving and Micah Vranyes in breaststroke. The medley relay with Coby Lessard, Goldman, Max Jytyla, and Jack Valentine took fourth.

Mustangs’ Athena pick is pole-vault champ Fixsen Julia Fixsen, two-time state pole vault champion, is Mounds View’s pick for the Athena Award as top senior girl student athlete.

Fixsen won state titles as a sophomore and junior, and holds the state record of 13-11 1/4. She made Team USA last spring and went to the IAAF U20 world meet in Finland, where she placed seventh. She has also made all-state in high jump. USA Track and Field named her Minnesota 2018 female athlete of the year.

Away from sports, Fixsen is co-founder and director of Hats From the Heart, a student-led club whose mission is knitting warm hats for kids. She has made academic all-state from 2016-18.

Siebenaler makes excellent exit from gymnastics with medals at state

It was Taylor Siebenaler’s last gymnastics meet, a decision she’d already made, and the Mounds View senior went out in style.

Competing in the state high school meet for the first time, Siebenaler placed third with a soaring vault that earned a 9.75 score, sixth in floor exercise with 9.625 and 13th all-around with 37.500 on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the University of Minnesota.

“I went into this final meet not needing to win or take home any medals, but really just have fun,” said Siebenaler, who was a Junior Olympics competitor until this year. She rated her performance not as strong as it could have been “but I enjoyed every second and wouldn’t change a thing.”

Also a sprinter on the track team, Siebenaler plans continue in that sport at Minnesota State-Mankato and leave balance beams and floor mats behind.

“Gymnastics is incredibly hard on the body,” explained the all-state gymnast. “I spent half the season with a back injury.”

Siebebaler’s vault, termed a “hand-front,” has the highest (10.0) level of difficulty.

“The reason I score so high is because of the height I get off of the table and the

distance I get away from the table when I land,” said Siebenaler, whose 9.75 was not a personal-best; she achieved 9.85 at a dual meet two weeks earlier.

Her floor exercise trademark is front tumbling. “I find tumbling forwards easier than tumbling backwards — unlike most people,” said Siebenaler. She starts with a front layout with a full twist connected to a front pike.

Her second pass is a roundoff back layout half-twist, connected to a front pike.

She wraps it up with a front layout connected to another front layout. Her 9.65 was her season best.

In her other events, she placed 21st on beam (9.225) an 36th on bars (8.900) among 48 entrants in each.

Her teammate Anelise Stamper, who qualified in beam, placed 39th with 8.75.

Siebnaler’s floor and allaround scores at state were school records, as is the 9.85 vault.

“Taylor finished her season with a good sense of accomplishment. She scored the highest All-Around of the season at state,” coach Julie Coopet said. “We, her coaches, were so proud of her determination and spirit that really inspired the team.”

I totaled 39.9 inches of snow in February and if you add in the 6.7” I totaled on March 1, that’s a total of 46.6 inches, all in a 30-day period. This would make it my snowiest 30-day period. Nelson said youth bring creativity to the table, which will help the board decide how to award its annual grants, solicit funds for its endowment and improve communications.

The 15-member board has three committees: grants, asset development and marketing and communications.

Youth will attend monthly board meetings and join one committee.

Each committee meets 8-10 times per year.

Youth will serve three-year terms just like the adults and be able to vote, which is uncommon, Nelson said.

Many boards have youth advisory members, but they do not vote.

“Shoreview is kind of on the cutting edge,” Nelson noted. “If they are going to give their time, they should have a vote.”

Several years ago, the Shoreview Human Rights Commission added voting youth members, Hite said.

There are few foundations in Minnesota with voting youth members.

Youth serving with the foundation will have the same rights and responsibilities as adults, Nelson said. However, if students graduate and go away to college, they can resign before completing three years of service, she added.

Joining the Shoreview Community Foundation will give students the opportunity to engage in service learning, leadership and learn about philanthropy, Nelson noted. “Individual people can make a positive difference.”

The foundation has a goal to reach a $1 million endowment to enable it to give back $50,000 per year. Insight from youth about how the foundation can achieve its goals is “equally valid to ours,” she added.

In 2018, the foundation gave about $23,000 in grants to the Shoreview Historical Society, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, Pinewood Elementary School,

How birds survive the winter freeze

One of the bald eagle’s strategies to survive cold winters is to gorge on food, food which helps them obtain lots of calories quickly. This eagle near Prescott, Wisconsin, has found a deer carcass to gorge on.

When the freezing temperatures of the polar vortex send humans scrambling for cover inside warm homes, the bird life outdoors somehow weathers through without the comfort of central heating or even wool socks.

It seems miraculous that tiny birds with bare toes can tolerate the extreme temperatures of a Minnesota winter, but a set of special adaptations have helped them do so for thousands of years.

Birds in winter often have a “puffed up” appearance—fluffing their feathers out this way creates more layers of air between their skin and the frigid outdoor temperatures.

According to an article on the Audubon website, small birds spend their days in search of fatty foods sources, especially seeds. Many birds will visit feeders, but a University of Wisconsin study found that the winter survival rate for chickadees was about the same whether or not the birds had access to feeders. The birds that do stick around for the winter have to be incredibly resourceful, since they must feed almost constantly during the day to produce enough energy to keep their bodies warm enough through the night.

Chickadees, in particular, have an ability to go into a regulated state of hypothermia while they sleep, according to an article from the National Wildlife Federation. This conserves energy by lowering the bird’s body temperature.

Chickadees will spend the night in small roosts, especially in small holes inside birch trees, where they can shelter from winter wind and precipitation.

Another trick of biology keeps the bare legs of many bird species from being inhibited by extreme cold. The legs of winter birds cool to a temperature near freezing, which saves their cardiovascular system the energy of heating them up.

and toes experience freezing temperatures, it doesn’t bother them because they cannot sense it.

Many people followed the recent news of a great black hawk that was found in Maine—well outside its ordinary range in the tropical climate of Mexico.

Hundreds of people traveled great distances to see this bird in such an unusual setting.

This bird species is not adapted to the harsh weather of a northern climate, and the wayward hawk unfortunately began to show signs of poor health as the winter progressed. A local rescue center captured it and tried to care for it, but the frostbite damage to its feet was too severe and the bird had to be euthanized.

However, some large raptors, such as bald eagles, have adapted to handle the challenges of low temperatures found in a northern climate. Like the smaller birds, blood flow to their talons is reduced during colder temperatures. Eagles are also strategic about the food they consume, gorging on as much as possible all at once.

This helps them load up on calories and prevent their food from being stolen by other animals,

according to the Raptor Resource Project blog. The Raptor Resource Project monitors raptor nests in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, including the peregrine falcon nest atop the Allen S. King plant in Oak Park Heights.

Eagles have the added challenge of incubating their eggs during late winter. According to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, eagles in the southern part of Minnesota typically lay eggs between late February and early March. Eagle parents must keep these eggs constantly warm. Both the male and female eagle share in this duty.

A bare patch of skin on the parent bird’s belly, called a brood patch, assists in transferring body heat directly to the eggs.

The birds that stick around for the winter have adapted to be tough as nails, but humans can help their winter survival by keeping bird and suet feeders stocked while the weather is cold. Yards with brush that can provide protected roosting places for birds will also help them fi nd shelter from the harsh weather—plus, attracting a few bird visitors could add a little life to the fi nal stretch of winter before spring comes into view.
