From martial arts to movies: Brandon Lee’s journey Along with being a Tae Kwon Do champion, Brandon Holam Lee has been a bit of a ham all his life.

That’s why his father and martial arts coach arranged an audition for him at D and A Talent in Edina agency 2 1/2 years ago.

“Brandon was always outgoing, and loves to perform,” explained Yong Hyeok Lee, a Grand Master and founder of Lee’s

It wasn’t Brandon’s idea, but his dad was right: the audition turned his life in a different direction. The 2016 graduate of Mounds View High School (MVHS) has embarked on an acting career and is finding some success in Los Angeles with his Tae Kwon Do background part of his repertoire.

“I thought it was just for modeling,” Lee said, “but they

had me read a few lines, too, and encouraged me to try acting.”

Then a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Lee commuted weekly to Edina for six months, taking his acting lessons and “skipping all the parties” to pursue that goal.

He decided to take the plunge a little over two years ago, and moved to Los Angeles. He’s represented by Hunt and Hart Entertainment.

Swan deaths spur effort to ban lead tackle

The symptoms aren’t difficult to see when you know what to look for: the tremors, drooping head, clumsy sluggishness and eventual death. The slow effects of lead poisoning on the swans at Sucker Lake in Vadnais Heights are a serious reminder of why the toxic metal has been banned in paints and pipes for decades. But there’s one place you’re still likely to find lead in Minnesota—your tackle box.

A bill introduced in the state Legislature this January is proposing to restrict the sale of lead tackle in Minnesota in the hope of reducing the accumulation of lead in local lakes.

A similar bill was introduced in early 2020 but was put on the back burner when the Legislature was occupied with a rush of bills at the onset of the pandemic. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Chuck Wiger in the Senate, and Rep. Peter Fischer in the House.

Sharp-eyed citizens and staff from the Vadnais Lake Area Watershed Management Organization (VLAWMO) have noted five dead swans in Sucker Lake in this winter. Not all of the dead swans were recovered, but three were tested at the University of Minnesota’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. All of them tested positive for lead poisoning.

Swan deaths from lead ingestion are a yearly occurrence at Sucker Lake. Locals have counted 22 dead swans in the last three years. The number of poisoned swans may seem small compared to the flocks of thousands that live in Minnesota, but Dawn Tanner, program development coordinator at VLAWMO, explained that cases of lead poisoning are underreported because of the dangerous conditions for bird recovery. If caught in time, swans can be treated with the help of rehabilitators such as the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville. But since swans are one of the largest birds species in North America and tend to prefer to spend time on open water at the edges of thin ice, capturing an ailing swan for treatment is no easy task.

The effects of lead in the environment are a concern for the hunting world as well; tiny lead fragments from ammunition are found in the meat and organs of game animals.

“The more we look for lead in the environment, the more we find it,” Tanner said. “This is a small exam-

ple of much larger problem.”

While many waterfowl are affected by lead in the lakes, the swans at Sucker Lake are especially noticeable because they happen to congregate in preferred fishing spots during the winter months, where the water is open, and where there also happens to be a lot of lost tackle. Like chickens, swans and loons swallow stones to aid in digestion, and fishing sinkers are the perfect size for their gizzard. The bills would ban the sale of lead sinkers and jigs an ounce or smaller, and under the length of 2.5 inches, giving retailers until the year 2024 to make the full switch.

Rep. Peter Fischer, who authored the House bill, said he wasn’t aware that Minnesota had no restrictions on lead tackle until he came across a presentation by Girl Scout Troop 56087 at a University of Minnesota water resources conference. The troop from White Bear Lake has stayed involved with the effort to pass legislation regulating the use of lead tackle, even testifying at legislative hearings.

Youth involvement has been a large part of the initiative to encourage anglers to make the switch to non-lead tackle. Kelly Amoth is an educator for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Get the Lead

Out program. She works to educate communities across the state about lead alternatives, taking special care to visit schools and summer camps.

“We really want to reach youth and start them on the right path as lifelong anglers in Minnesota,” she said.

Amoth estimated that 25 percent of loons die from the ingestion of lead-based tackle.

One study from 2006 surveyed anglers leaving five popular walleye lakes, finding that nearly a metric ton of sinkers had been lost in the depths over the course of a single summer. Lead sitting at the bottom of the lake does not degrade over time, which presents a cumulative risk not only to wildlife, but to human health, Amoth said.

There are a few challenges in encouraging anglers to adopt this change. Anglers tend to prefer lead sinkers to metal alternatives because they often perform better, responding more sensitively when there’s a bite on the line. However, tungsten sinkers are already popular among ice fishers. This alternative is considered even more fine-tuned than lead, but also more costly. Amoth encourages anglers to look at it as a long-term investment in higher-quality gear.

Get the Lead Out (www.pca.state.mn.us/living-green/nontoxic-tackle-get-lead-out) has compiled a list of manufacturers that make lead-free tackle, many of them local to Minnesota. While Amoth wants anglers to get lead items out of their tackle boxes, she also wants to be clear that they should not go into the garbage. Lead is a toxic material that should be disposed of at hazardous waste sites.

Part of Get the Lead Out’s initiative includes tackle exchanges that offer lead-free alternatives and collect lead items for proper disposal.

Although in-person events have mostly halted under COVID-19 safety measures, Amoth looks forward to a time this spring or summer when these events will be available to communities across Minnesota, including the Vadnais Heights and White Bear Lake areas.

The authors of HF157 and SF247, the companion House and Senate bills, are still hammering out the exact details regarding size restrictions on lead tackle, but it’s close to fi nal, Fischer said. The bill is expected to be included in an omnibus House policy bill from the Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee.

Protecting our Kids

s a Minnesota kid living in the shadow of Jacob Wetterling’s disappearance, I remember vividly the warnings about “stranger danger.” The reality, however, is that children are more likely to be harmed by someone they know, someone in their circle of trust.

Unfortunately, we have many Legislator examples of this, including some Lingo that hit close to home.

allowed to happen, how it was allowed to go on for so many years. The devastating reality is that the abuse flourished because other adults allowed it to continue.

This led me to our mandated reporting statute and I was stunned to realize that Minnesota’s current law does not extend to coaches and instructors outside of school or childcare settings. As a mom of kids who play club soccer, my next thought was “how do I keep my kids safe?

And how do I keep other kids safe?” At the beginning of the legislative session, I introduced House File 310 to try to do just that.

The bill expands mandated reporting requirements to include more employees who have face-to-face contact with children, including club sport coaches, scout leaders, church employees, and other youth supervisors and instructors. We must make sure that those who have authority

over our kids, and have earned their trust, know they have the obligation to report suspected abuse.

Since introducing the bill in January, I learned that a young person I already know was the victim of sexual abuse and that this bill would have made a difference. On March 22nd, with that young person’s support and advocacy, House File 310 passed off the House floor with nearly unanimous support. Hopefully the Minnesota Senate will follow our lead so that this important bill can become law. A link to the powerful House floor debate can be found here.

Kids Cooking School now equipped for food, art and crafts classes

The pandemic has forced the owner of Kids Cooking School to get even more creative.

Kids Cooking School, located at 307 Village Parkway in Circle Pines, has rebranded as “Kids Creative School.” This summer, in addition to cooking classes, the business will also offer art and crafts classes.

Lino Lakes resident Tiffany Cavegn opened the business in Lino Lakes in February 2017. Cavegn, a chef and health coach, is the founder of a nonprofit organization, Healthy Strong Kids of Minnesota, whose mission is to provide food assistance to families in need while teaching young people how to cook healthy recipes. After she taught community education classes, she realized there was a need for a local children’s cooking school.

The business had to close its doors in September 2018.

The Kids Cooking School found a temporary home at Oak Hill Montessori School in Shoreview in 2019. Two weeks before the March 2020 shutdown, Cavegn signed a lease for the school’s new (and current location) in Circle Pines.

“Like everyone, it's been challenging for us. We got just enough federal funding last year to make it through the summer,” Cavegn explained. “Due to the nature of classes, when we had to reduce capacity by 50%, it reduced our revenue but did not reduce our expenses.

We are currently running at 50% revenue and 110% expenses when you take on the extra sanitizing required and because students can't share anything, so we have to order more individual ingredients.”

Every year, Cavegn starts planning summer camps in the fall. At that time, it was unclear whether the same COVID-10 restrictions and protocols would be in place.

She began brainstorming ways to increase revenue to avoid closing the business for a second time.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Time to reopen libraries

Today I visited the Ramsey County Library website, thinking that surely I would finally be able to go in and browse the collection I pay significant tax dollars to maintain and browse. But no, it is still closed to those who have submitted a request. Why should I continue paying top-dollar taxes to Ramsey County, which fails to provide the services it was providing through March 2020? It is time to reopen the libraries to public browsing or slash their budgets so I can put my book and movie dollars elsewhere. Browsing is a key function of libraries; if they can't provide it, we should stop paying for it.

“The stars aligned,” and Kids Creative School received a grant from Anoka County to help launch Cavegn’s latest ideas, an art studio and outdoor classroom. “I have been wanting to expand our classes to include unusual arts and crafts, the kind you see on Pinterest but not in your typical art classrooms,” she explained.

One of the tenants down the hall from Kids Creative School closed its doors, so the landlord offered Cavegn the space on a month-to-month basis. That new space will allow the business to increase its space. However, Cavegn doesn’t have the capacity to add more cooking stations.

Even if the 50% capacity restriction is loosened this summer, Cavegn said there will likely still be capacity limits to make sure social distancing can be maintained. Students likely won’t be able to share ingredients or cook stations.

Summer camps include: Food Around the World, Breakfast Buffet, Camping Cuisine, Mad About Macarons, Crazy about Cupcakes, Italian Favorites and more.

Art camps, many of which will incorporate science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts, will include: Sparkling Mosaic Art, Acrylic & Resin Pours, 3D Printing, Hogwarts Paper Models and Craft My Crazy.

The school attracts students from various school districts, including Centennial, White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, Forest Lake, Mounds View, Spring Lake Park, Roseville, Maplewood/North Saint Paul/Oakdale and St. Paul.

years. “He has always liked helping me in the kitchen.

He is more of a creative person and isn’t into sports as much,” Allshouse explained. “I asked him if he would be interested in trying a class. He really liked it, so he just kept doing it.”

Even though Dylan is a regular student at the cooking school, he is still able to find new classes that interest him. “He loves Chef Tiffany, and it’s not the same thing over and over again,” she said. “He loves going and meeting new friends. It keeps him busy.”

Dylan recently took a cupcakes and hot cocoa bomb class and soon plans to take another class on macarons.

This summer, he is also signed up for the Italian Favorites camp. Allshouse said she hasn’t yet asked Dylan whether he wants to try out some of the arts and crafts type of classes, but she guesses he will.

Kids Creative School plans to host an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 11, so families can visit the cooking and art studio space, meet staff and try out some of the projects. To sign up for a time slot, or to learn more about the business, visit kidscreativeschool. org.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

Shoreview • A resident in the 500 block of Harriet Avenue reported a burglary overnight March 13-14, after surveillance photos revealed three suspects entering an apartment building at 5:30 a.m.

March 14 and breaking into storage units on the fi rst and second floors. After thieves used a bolt cutter for access, they stole clothing and artwork from one of the units and unidentified items from other units. The investigation has started, after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies obtained photos of the suspects and their vehicle and

awaited information from the owners of all the storage units.

• A Shoreview woman, 31, was arrested at 7:39 p.m.

March 16 in the 4000 block of Hodgson Road for interfering with a 911 call, following a domestic.

The suspect left the scene after the argument, but later turned herself in and was booked at the law enforcement center.

• A resident in the 900 block of Hardwood Avenue on March 18 reported outgoing mail containing a check stolen from her mailbox. The information on the check was fraudulently used eight times amounting to a loss of $900 before the account was closed. The case is under investigation.

• An abandoned bicycle was reported found March 19 at the ball field at Bobbie Theisen Park in the 4600 block of Victoria Street N. and turned in to the Shoreview City Hall. After clearing the National Crime Information Center database, the bicycle was brought to the patrol station property room for safe keeping.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen March 19 from a Toyota Prius parked in a driveway in the 600 block of Highway 96 W. • A resident in the 900 block of Tanglewood Drive at 11:36 p.m. March 19 reported interrupting an attempt to steal the catalytic converter off his Toyota Prius as it was parked in the driveway.

Ramsey County Sheriff’s Deputy Injured in Crash when Struck by Wanted Felon in Stolen Vehicle

On Wednesday, March 17 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Ramsey County sheriff deputies were attempting to locate a suspect in a stolen vehicle that had just fled from Mounds View Police Officers.

The suspect vehicle was last seen on Mounds View Boulevard and County Road H approaching the 35W interchange.

As a deputy was en route to the area of Highway 10 and 35W to search for the suspect vehicle, the suspect

vehicle struck the deputy’s squad car. The deputy’s squad car had its emergency lights activated and was proceeding through a green light.

The deputy’s squad car was struck on westbound Highway 96 just west of the Highway 10 bridge as the suspect vehicle was exiting southeast Highway 10 onto Highway 96. When the deputy’s squad car was struck by the suspect vehicle, it spun around and struck another vehicle before catching on fi re. Another responding

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Traveling DANCO violation leads to arrest A Roseville man, 53, faces up to five years in jail and/or a maximum $10,000 fine for felony violation of a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO) on March 9 – exactly one year after he was originally served with the third such order. The subject has two prior qualified domestic violance-related convictions within the past 10 years – both involving the same victim.

On March 9, 2021, deputies were called out to the Exxon station at 3854 Lexington Avenue on a couple arguing near a vehicle. As deputies approached the subjects, the male got into the car and began to drive off, but was stopped when deputies activated their air horn. While deputies were talking with the victim, the suspect hopped into the car again and drove off successfully.

Deputies gave chase for a short period before giving up to return to the victim, who had also left the gas station.

While deputies were on their computer verifying the subjects' records and identification, a different deputy located both parties near an underground apartment garage in Roseville. The suspect got into the car and once again tried to escape deputies, but had no where to go but into the garage. Deputies later located him in the corner of the garage and arrested him.

The victim told deputies that back at the gas station the suspect wouldn't let her out of his car to get to a women's shelter in Brainerd.

The stolen vehicle was driven by an individual with an active felony warrant for fleeing police in a motor vehicle and a lengthy criminal history, including several felony convictions for motor vehicle theft, assault, domestic assault, fleeing police in a motor vehicle, drugs, and burglary.

The Minnesota State Patrol will conduct a crash reconstruction. No additional information is available.

SHOREVIEW CITY COUNCIL SNIPPETS • With the current COVID-19 relief package signed into law, Shoreview Council Member Terry Quigley was wondering if the new package would benefit the city with any revenue loss due to the pandemic. Shoreview City Manager Terry Schwerm explained the difference between The Cares Act and The American Rescue Plan during the March 15 City Council meeting. He said the big difference is The American Rescue Plan will have money allocated for local governments.

Casey Beaton, representing Holiday Station stores, wanted to thank the council for the opportunity for this

site. “We're excited to be able to redevelop this with the existing owner and try to provide something that's a little newer and up to current standards,” Beaton said. Council Member Denkinger asked what the timeline would be from to start and finish with the construction of the project. Beaton said if everything goes as planned, construction will take place throughout the summer with an opening planned in the fall. Council Member Cory Springhorn asked if there would be hot dogs at the new store and said, “I haven't had a Holiday hot dog in over a year, and I don't have them often.” Beaton's answer was, “Yes, as long as the CDC allows it.”

The next City Council meeting will be Monday, April 5. The meeting will be held virtually.

ife has been a challenge for everyone lately. One of the things that I hear frequently in this pandemic existence is the need for good self-care for our entire bodies and beings. Upon hearing this message I realized that it had been ages since I had an eye exam to check on the health of my vision. Shoreview sailor headed for Olympics

When Lara Weiss was very young, her mother, Sue, gave her a book that inspired a dream. And that dream came true last month.

“I’ve wanted to be an Olympian since I was very young,” she told Shoreview Press. “My mom got me a book that highlighted successful female athletes, which made me see it as a possibility, and I’ve always carried the dream with me.”

The Shoreview native, now Lara Dallman-Weiss of Miami, and partner Nikki Barnes recently earned the USA’s slot in sailing for the summer Olympics slated for July in Japan.

Dallman-Weiss and Barnes, sailing as Team Perfect Vision, were one of three American teams still in contention for one Olympics berth when they raced at the 470 World Championship Regatta in Vilamoura, Portugal, concluding March 13.

This was the last of three races that served as Olympic trials. Dallman-Weiss and Barnes beat the other two American teams while placing seventh of 27 teams overall.

“My initial reaction was sheer pride and joy,” Dallman-Weiss said. “Our team has worked unbelievably hard over the past three years and we performed like we knew how when it counted.”

There’s not much room or time to savor the achievement now, she said, as they continue to train hard.

Next is the European Championship slated for April 30 to May7. Beyond that, their schedule is COVID dependent. Their Olympic event is sched-

Dallman-Weiss started sailing at age six at White Bear Yacht Club, where her father, John Weiss, the lead race officer on White Bear Lake, was her first coach.

She attended Oak Hill Montessori, Island Lake Elementary, Chippewa Middle School, and Mounds View High School (Class of 2007).

At MVHS, she was a member of a state champion track team), running the 4-by-800 relay and 1600. Otherwise, she dabbled in several sports: cross country in grades 9,10, and 12 (varsity as a senior), Viewettes dance team as a junior, basketball in grades 9-10. Her long-term commitments were sailing every sum-

mer, and dancing with Larkin Dance Studio from ages 3 to 13.

At Eckerd College in St Petersburg, FL, majoring in nutrition, she was captain of the sailing team and placed third in the women’s national collegiate meet.

Continuing to sail, Dallman-Weiss had a big year in 2016, winning Key West Race Week (C&C 30 Class), Etchells Pacific Coast Championships (as main trimmer), and North American (40 class, Flash Gordon) titles.

After that, she sailed in several professional circuits on “other people’s boats” and started working in sailing media, which eventually led to drone flying to help teams analyze their performance.

“I still sailed, but less, since I was more in the coaching role, until I came back to my Olympic dream,”she explained.

Dallman-Weiss met Nikki Barnes in April of 2018 and they started sailing together competitively. Barnes, a Coast Guard officer, lives in her St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

Dallman-Weiss lists her occupation as athlete, as does Barnes, who has a dispensation from the Coast Guard to pursue her Olympic goal.

“Aside from all of the rigorous training of being an elite athlete,” Dallman-Weiss said, “we also manage our entire campaign, which includes shipping boats around the world, scheduling travel, and raising money to fund the entire project.”

A year ago, the American teams were in Spain for the 2020 world championships when the event was canceled amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, which delayed the Olympics for a year.

That delay seemed to work in their favor. They used the time to train in Santander, on the north coast of Spain, and in the Canary Islands.

“During the COVID time … we were able to train with these incredible teams, in really hard conditions,” Barnes told her hometown paper in St. Thomas. “It was all about just the time to put our heads down and get the work done.”

Dallman-Weiss is the second MVHS graduate to earn a spot in the Olympics, joining Kyra Condie, 24, who qualified in Rock Climbing for the 2020 Olympics in Japan which were delayed for a year (featured in the Shoreview Press in February 2020).

Abbie Thompson, Mounds View senior hockey goalie, faced 602 shots this season and had the highest save percentage, .937, among 25 goalies who faced over 600. Her goals-against-average for the Mustangs (11-9) was 2.10 and the Star-Tribune named her third-team All-Metro. As a junior, Thompson posted a .930 save percentage and 2.07 GAA on a 9-15-3 team. “Abbie has been a fantastic goalie the last two years and a strong leader for our team,” coach Garrett Windle said. “Her athletic ability and positionally sound play gave us a chance in each and every game we played.”

Thompson also plays volleyball and softball.

An excellent boys basketball season by Mounds View ended with a Section 5AAAA semifinal loss to Park Center 66-57 at home Thursday evening.

Evan Kim pumped in 28 points for the Mustangs, hitting five 3-pointers, and finished his career with 776 points. Cole Sorensen sank 10 points and Dylan Wheeler eight.

The Mustangs beat Centennial 75-64 in the first round, with Kobe Kirk scoring 20 points, Wheeler 13 and Joey Bruggers 12.

The Mustangs were Suburban East Conference co-champions, posted a 16-4 record, were ranked No. 10 in the state, and had four players named all-conference — seniors Kim and Sorensen, and juniors Wheeler and Kirk.

“We had a very successful season,” Leiser said. “This team bonded together and played as a cohesive group.

Our captains — Wheeler, Kim, and Lucas Sopcinski — really set a positive tone for our team with their outstanding leadership.

“We were very thankful to have had a season and all of our players stayed healthy.”

The Mounds View boys hockey team beat Roseville Area 3-2 and lost to White Bear Lake 3-2 in the Section 4AA tournament, finishing with a 10-9-1 record. The Mustangs took a 3-0 lead against Roseville (7-12) on two goals by Luke Morrisette and one by James Harrington and held on as the Raiders scored twice in the last four minutes. Aidan Petrich made 27 saves. Against White Bear Lake (16-4-1), Ryan Collins had both goals including a power play with 20 seconds left in the game.

BRANDON LEE: Aims for acting career FROM PAGE 1

“One of my dreams was to be an actor,” Yong Hyeok Lee confesses, “but I could not pursue it. I want to support my son’s passion.”

Lee is 22 years old, 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds. At MVHS, he was a long jumper and sprinter on the track team and went out for football as a senior, where he played wide receiver.

He didn’t take part in any stage productions there, but his entertainment inclinations go back to age 3, when he found himself enthralled by a Jackie Chan movie.

“I was trying to copy him for about three hours, and wound up breaking my leg!” he said. “So, my father knew I had a passion for that.”

While he was growing up, he evoked remarks from friends and relatives that he would wind up an actor.

Putting himself out there in martial arts all those years was good preparation.

“I’ve been in Tae Kwon Do since I was 3,” Lee said. “Obviously, my father coached me. I was born into it. But my father never pushed me. I just had a natural passion for it.”

We finished 8º warmer than normal with major snowfalls passing off to our south. What did fall was usually in the way of rain, with a nice soaking 1.5 inch rain total on March 23-24. This past weekends rain, although steady, totaled around .25". With the warmth and the rain came very early ice outs on the area big lakes. Something new is coming late this summer to the Commons area at the Shoreview Community Center.

The city of Shoreview and the Shoreview Community Foundation have unveiled plans for a Friendship Garden, and residents and local businesses have been invited to support the project.

New apartment construction has declined nationwide The number of rental apartments completed in the United States in 2019 remained statistically unchanged from the previous year but dropped by 15,000 from 2017.

The U.S. Census Bureau looked at the characteristics of newly constructed apartments spanning from 2015 to 2019, including the number of units, percentage rented in the first three months after being completed, and the median rents — both nationally and by regions.

During that period, monthly rents were about $100 higher than in 2015, even after adjusting for inflation.

The information comes from the Survey of Market Absorption of New and Multifamily Units (SOMA). The publication is a valuable tool for builders, bankers, market analysts, land planners and government officials to measure how soon housing units are rented or sold (absorbed) after their completion.

SOMA provides a key metric for gauging demand for new units. The survey collects data for privately financed, nonsubsidized, unfurnished units in buildings with five or more units. Data is published quarterly by the Census Bureau.

Highlights from 2015 to 2019: • The highest number of rental apartment construction in the United States in the past five years was in 2017, when 294,800 units were built.

• The South continued to lead the nation in new apartment construction in 2019.

• Nationally, the median monthly cost to rent an apartment in 2019 was $1,653.

That was about $100 higher than the median monthly rental costs of $1,519 in 2015, after adjusting for inflation.

• The absorption rate — the percent of apartment units rented nationally within three months of completion — in 2019

was lower than in 2015. It remained statistically unchanged from 2017 to 2018.

While the West saw an increase of more than 7,000 new units in 2019 from the previous year, the South saw a decline of just under 5,000 new units, while the Northeast and Midwest remained statistically unchanged.

The South accounts for 38% of the total U.S. population but 43% of new rental unit construction — the highest percentage of new construction of any region in 2019. It was followed by the West, which accounted for 30% of new rental unit construction, and the Midwest at 14%.

The Northeast accounted for 17% of the total population in 2019 and had the lowest percentage of new construction at 13%.

There were approximately 1,387,000 new apartment units in buildings with five or more units constructed nationwide between 2015 and 2019.

Fifty-six percent of the new apartment units constructed between 2015 and 2019 were absorbed (rented) within the first six months on the market. After 1 year, 94% of those units were rented.

During that period, the largest number of new units were built in the South. The peak year was 2017 when 138,900 apartments were built — more than the number built in each of the previous two years and 18,500 more than were built in 2019.

The South took the lead in the number of new apartments built, but not in rental costs. Median monthly rent in 2019 was highest in the Northeast at $2,279. The West had the second-highest median rent at $1,903, followed by the South ($1,476) and the Midwest ($1,381), which did not differ significantly from each other.
