Nature photographer soars with new exhibit Nuptials gone awry: Coping with COVID

“For the last decade, I’ve been visiting Monticello to see trumpeter swans.

In the wintertime, they go there because of warmer water from the nuclear plant and can wade along the weed line,” Radford said. “About 35 years ago, Sheila Lawrence would see some of these swans but not too many of them.

Seven weeks before Molly Lund and Chris Kieger were supposed to say “I do,” everything turned upside down.

Lund grew up in Hugo and Kieger in White Bear Lake. They are both White Bear Lake grads (2009 and 2008, respectively). They became engaged in August 2020. Lund is a site manager for Kids Club at Rice Lake Elementary School in Lino Lakes, and Kieger is a document control specialist at Sensata Technologies in White Bear Lake.

Ever since he was a young boy, nature photographer Jim Radford, of Shoreview, has been inspired by God’s gift of nature.

“What I try to capture in my photographs is the beauty of the beast—the behaviors, biology and sustainability of our planet. Whether it’s a tiny hummingbird or grizzly bear, a forest fern or the Milky Way, it’s all about the beauty

and genesis of our lives,” Radford said.

“I hope to spread the message of responsible stewardship of nature by all ages.”

Since 2013, Radford has put his scenic images on display at the Taste of Scandinavia Bakery & Café in Shoreview.

His latest exhibit, “Birds of a Feather,” will be displayed beginning in May. It will feature birds with white feathers, including trumpeter swans, egrets and snow geese.

Sheila and someone from the DNR ‘hatched a plan’ to go up to Alaska and they brought back 50 swan eggs and placed them along the Mississippi. Those 50 eggs hatched and 50 turned into a couple hundred, then to a thousand. At the peak, they had 3,500 to 4,000 birds feeding at their location.”

Sheila passed away 10 years ago, and her husband Jim kept the project going. Radford said they basically restored the trumpeter swan population in Minnesota.

“Another inspiration for this exhibit is specifically the beauty of these big birds. Just seeing them soaring in flight is beautiful, even without a photograph.

What led me as a child to an unfulfilled interest in flying, although I was in the Civil Air Patrol and enjoyed private flights

with friends. I suspect we all want to know what it would be like to be a bird,” Radford said.

“I had cousins who fulfilled that dream as military aviators. I also find inspiration in the work by other photographers and videographers.”

Once recent morning, Radford was taking his morning walk along Sucker Creek and saw approximately 500 trumpeter swans.

“I was excited, and I started taking some pictures. I ran into a volunteer from the nature center and she asked me if I’ve seen any sick birds,” he said.

“The birds are getting poisoned in this water because of lead poisoning. They are bottom feeders and ingesting lead sinkers left by fisherman.”

This prompted Radford to get in touch with the Minnesota DNR. He discovered that the agency has been monitoring Sucker Lake since 2019.

Approximately 21 trumpeter swans have died so far in the lake due to lead poisoning. Radford is hoping legislation will ban lead sinkers used by fisherman to help save the trumpeter swan population.

Since retirement from marketing management at 3M, Radford has been published in a wide variety of publications and has won awards for his graphic art and displays in public places, including his online galleries at http://radfordpictures.com and pictorem.com/ profile/James.Radford.

“Photography is still fun, now that I’m retired,” Radford said.

“I shoot a lot of sports because I have a lot of grandchildren and they are really good at hockey, and that keeps me busy.”

“I really just love the outdoors, and I’m hoping this will be the best display yet,” he said.

Radford is dedicating the exhibit to Jim and Sheila Lawrence for their joint dedication

‘Keep Moving’ will assist neighbors A virtual run/walk called “Keep Moving,” presented by the Suburban Ramsey Emergency Coalition, will raise funds to assist neighbors who are suffering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Suburban Ramsey Emergency Coalition includes all local affi liates of the four major international service clubs (Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis and Optimists) along with the Shoreview and Roseville Area Community Foundations.

Those who register for the 3-mile run/walk will receive a printable race bib they can wear while participating.

They will also receive coupons donated by various local restaurants and businesses. Participants may complete

Over the past year, the coalition has awarded $150,170 in grants to local nonprofit service providers for food, housing and mental health/wellness services and has provided volunteer services. The organization is committed to continue to help local communities as long as neighbors need assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonprofit service providers serving the Mounds View and Roseville Area School Districts may apply for grants to address food insecurity, housing instability or mental health/wellness in our community.

PARKS AND REC: Summer camp and activities FROM PAGE 1

A popular camp is the Minnesota Twins Baseball Clinic, which teaches the basic fundamentals of baseball in a fun and encouraging atmosphere. The Twins Community Fund provides all the equipment. The clinic is Sat., Aug. 14 and is free.

A variety of sports camps, offered from June until August, provide skill development with an emphasis on fun. Players learn core skills and techniques used in each sport. Sports camps include basketball, flag football, ninja fitness, cheerleading and dance, archery, handball and frisbee.

Little Striker’s Bowling Camp will teach bowling basics for kids ages 5 to 10. Campers will visit Bowlopolis, an animated city that is all about bowling, where they’ll meet the characters and learn that bowling is fun. The camp is 10 to noon July 26-28 at Flaherty’s Arden Bowl. Lunch will be provided.

The Messiest Art Camp Ever! is back by popular demand. This camp takes mess-making to a whole new level. Painting with plaster, sculpting with gooey-gunk, making paper-mache birds and flinging paint are some of the messy projects slated for this year’s camp. The camp, for kids ages 5-10, will

be held July 19-22 at Shamrock Park.

Other camps offered are two musical theater camps — “Anastasia” and “Hamilton” — where campers will learn music and choreography and put on a special performance during the final class.

The Mad Scientist Camp will allow future scientists to learn safety skills while taking a handson approach to science.

Benoit noted that as restrictions are being lifted, weddings and birthday parties are also being scheduled at the Shoreview Community Center. A new wedding package option includes use of the Shoreview Room and deck, the Haffeman Pavilion and a new garden space.

“We’re finally getting back to hosting weddings because we can serve food,” he said. “We are adding a brand new space for weddings this summer at Shoreview Commons that overlooks the pond, and we have our pavilion, which people like. We are getting a lot of interest with that from people and after last year with COVID, we’re excited to get at it again.”

Four members of the Mounds View boys basketball team were named to the All-Suburban East team after the Mustangs tied for the conference championship.

They are senior guards Evan Kim, Cole Sorensen and Dylan Wheeler and junior forward Kobe Kirk. Kirk averaged 15.2 points, Kim 12.4, Wheeler 12.0 and Sorensen 10.0.

Getting honorable mention were seniors Joey Bruggers, Ethan Farn and Lucas Sopcinski.

The Mustangs tied Cretin-Derham Hall (the state runner-up) for first place in the SEC with a 15-3 record and were 16-4 overall.

Girls hockey: Thompson, Bullert named all-conference Two Mounds View girls hockey players, Abbie Thompson and Ava Bullert, were named to the all-Suburban East Conference team.

Thompson, senior goaltender, had a .937 save percentage and 2.10 goals-against-average, and was a finalist for state senior goalie of the year. Thompson was Mounds View’s Athena Award recipient as top senior girl athlete.

Bullert, junior forward, was the team’s points leader with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points.

Getting honorable mentions were seniors Laura Arfstrom and Paige Landis, junior Lindsay Berggren, and freshman Lauren Ballinger. Berggren and Landis led in goals with nine each.

The Mustangs were 11-9 overall and 10-8 in conference.

Girls basketball: Eischens is all-SEC, team MVP Jessie Eichens was Mounds View’s lone all-Suburban East Conference pick and was named team Most Valuable Player.

The sophomore guard led the Mustangs with 10.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Leah Ban and freshman guars Bria Stenstrom got honorable mentions. Ban was named the team’s best defensive player. Faith Iwerks and Julia Peterson got the Mustang Spirit Award. Named next year’s captains were Maddie Hanson and Sarah Solfest.

Team awards were announced by coach Dave Bratland.

The Mustangs had a 3-16 record.

The Shoreview City Council’s June 1 meeting was held exactly one week after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis—an anniversary that did not go unnoticed by Shoreview councilmembers.

“We’ve had a week like we’ve never seen before and I pray we’ll never see again,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “We’ve seen the very best, and we’ve seen the very worst of Minnesota citizens.”

Floyd died May 25 after former Minneapolis police officer ficer Derek offi Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes while he was handcuffed on the ground. Floyd was arrested after he was accused of passing a counterfeit $20 bill at Cup Foods in south Minneapolis.

Chauvin has since been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Hennepin County.

In the days since, Floyd’s death has sparked protests and riots throughout the Twin Cities.

May 8, 2015 will forever be the worst day of Jane’s life. That’s the day everything changed.

The assault On the Friday following Cinco de Mayo, Jane, 25, went to a bar with some friends for a birthday celebration. They ran into a group of four men. One of the men introduced himself as “Hugo.”

“I thought he was creepy but I did think one of his friends was cute, so I continued talking to his friend,” she recalled. Hugo became irate and begin calling Jane vulgar names when she started to pay more attention to his friend.

Scared for my dogs and knowing I couldn’t protect them and go for my gun, I froze,” she recalled. “Before I could get any further into my bedroom, he rushed me and slammed the door behind him. He grabbed me by the hair on the back of my head and shoved me on my bed.

I remember thinking God, please don’t let him rape me.”

When the assault was over and Hugo had left, Jane did the one thing you are not supposed to do after a sexual assault: she showered.

“I felt so gross and sticky. I felt like I smelt like this rancid smell that I could smell coming from him. I felt so disgusting that my fi rst reaction was to get into the shower,” she said. Jane works in criminal law, so she knew once the evidence was gone, there was a very slim-to-no chance that the perpetrator would ever be caught.

“I also felt a lot of shame and guilt. I thought it was my fault and that I was going to be blamed for this,” she said. “They won’t see me as a victim, they will just see me as a slut.”

Alexandra House Executive Director Connie Moore said, “A lot of times victims won’t report because they are feeling like — somehow — they are responsible for what happened. They feel that if they had done something different it wouldn’t have happened to them, so it is their fault.”

Dogs and weddings?

What could be better

I

f you know me, you know I love dogs. I wear my dog mom hat proudly. I also love weddings.

I can easily binge watch shows like “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Four Weddings.

With wedding season right around the corner, I’m getting excited for my new part-time “job”. I have been hired by Doggy Social as a pet attendant.

Although I was able to include my white German shepherd Frosty in our engagement photos, we were not able to have her attend our big day because we didn’t have anyone to watch her all day.

(Our corgi Twinkie wasn’t born yet.)

That’s where a pet attendant comes in. As a pet attendant, my number one priority is to keep their fur baby safe, while taking care of their needs. We make sure the dogs have just as much fun as their humans and are incorporated into the day, whether that means making sure the dogs Out and look their best for photos, getting About them ready to walk down the aisle or socializing with wedding guests Shannon at cocktail hour.

Vaccine Even though I have only been eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for two weeks now, I have been anxiously waiting my turn since the pandemic began.

As a journalist, I’m so thankful that I’ve been able to work throughout the entire pandemic.

We were deemed “essential,” yet we weren’t granted access to the vaccine until virtually everyone else was.

Every day early in the morning and late at night, I have surfed various websites for pharmacies, grocery stores and clinics hoping to get lucky enough to find an appointment anywhere from the Twin Cities to Duluth. I even joined a Facebook group where people post tips and places that they have been able to find appointments.

Sometimes I have gotten my hopes up when I’m able to select a specific date and time only to find out the “appointment is no longer available.” I’m not even picky about which vaccine I receive.

I was finally able to find an appointment in Sandstone, Minnesota last Friday. Now let’s hope I can find an appointment for my second vaccine.

Rep. Moller fighting at the Capitol to deliver justice for survivors of sexual assault

E

nsuring all Minnesotans can count on being safe is one of the hallmark responsibilities of the Legislature. Through the course of our work, we often identify shortcomings in current law and other problems which require our action to protect people.

Recently, the Minnesota Supreme Court put such a situation right on our doorstep.

The court had reviewed a criminal sexual conduct conviction in which a man sexually assaulted a woman after picking her up Legislator after she had been refused service Lingo by a University of Minnesota-area Kelly Moller bar. The victim was clearly intoxicated and unable to provide consent.

Unfortunately, in ordering a new trial, the high court ruled that the law’s mental incapacitation clause doesn’t cover an instance in which the victim voluntarily consumed alcohol.

This was a devastating ruling that perpetuates the culture of victim blaming. Prosecutors already face a host of difficulties in successfully charging these cases. Too often, survivors don’t even come forward to report the crime. They might fear they won’t be taken seriously, and there are too many documented cases of exactly that occurring.

They might not want to relive

their trauma by recounting what happened in excruciating detail.

If there’s any silver lining to this story, it’s that the wheels had already been in motion to address this shortcoming in the law and close other loopholes serving as roadblocks to delivering justice. Last year, a working group thoroughly reviewed the current sexual assault statutes and offered a series of recommendations, including one to address the “voluntary intoxication” loophole. I’m proud to be chief author of a bill containing this overdue, comprehensive series of updates to the criminal sexual conduct code. In fact, in explaining their role and duty to review the plain language of law, regardless of how reprehensible the action under consideration, the Supreme Court specifically noted the working group’s efforts and my legislation.

Not just here in Minnesota, but across the nation, the outrage in response to the court’s ruling was intense. After the Supreme Court’s decision, legislators from both sides of the aisle reached out to sign on as co-authors to this legislation and asked how they can help. Members of the public started an online petition, collecting over 67,000 signatures, and the University of Minnesota Student Association supported a resolution to adopt our bill, collecting nearly 1,200 signatures in a short period of time. Many survivors reached out to me and other legislators to share their support for the bill.

For decades, survivor advocates have worked to not just strengthen sexual assault laws, but to change the entire culture around the concept of consent.

In 2021, it should be crystal clear that if someone is intoxicated to the degree they can’t provide consent, justice should be delivered.

My legislation contains other important solutions to combat sexual assault, too. It creates a specific new crime to stop sexual extortion, in which a person is compelled into unwanted sexual conduct, perhaps a renter or employee. It has some significant measures to protect children from sex crimes, and it creates a new, felony-level offense for nonconsensual conduct.

As disappointing as the recent Supreme Court ruling was, I’m encouraged by the momentum developing among members of the public – as well as the bipartisan support from my fellow lawmakers – to make these comprehensive updates to state law. All Minnesotans deserve safety, and if they experience wrongdoing, they should be able to count on justice and accountability being delivered.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No budget cuts for the library I would like to respond to the letter “Time to reopen libraries”

by April King, which ran March 30. I am 10 years old and I love to read. Our libraries are very important to me. Like Ms. King, I would like to browse the shelves of our libraries, but I do not think the solution is to “slash their budgets” while we wait for the libraries to safely reopen. COVID-19 has been very hard on the libraries and I think they are doing all they can to get books, movies and other resources to everyone. For the past year, my family has used the online browsing and check-out system. We have checked out many books, movies, story bags, grab bags and STEM kits that we have enjoyed very much. Because of the Read Make Do kits, we have even been able to take online creative pastel classes and we have made birdseed ornaments. I am also grateful the library has made it possible for me to attend the library’s online youth book clubs via Zoom. If anything, we should increase library funding!

‘Me’ vs ‘We’ A recent letter asserted that if one couldn't get public services they had paid taxes for prepandemic, no longer paying those taxes was justifi able. This kind of fact-free selfi sh “me” perspective infects American adversely in many ways. The greed aspect results in a cancer eating America's soul: economic inequality. The fortunate few making millions/billions annually say: it's “unjust” to take what they've “earned all by themselves.”

We have numerous economic and moral justice perversions written into tax codes maintaining top 1% fortunes (many inherited).

A primary vehicle is reverse Robin Hood 1981-2017 rich and corporate tax cuts. After the 2008 Wall Street crooks-inspired crash, many Americans suffered for years. For a period, ALL income went to the top 1%. The missing 1981-2017 tax revenue could have challenged debt. Many studies confirm 90-95% of Americans lost purchasing power since 1973; they're being robbed of $10,000 annually by the top 1%.

America is No. 25 in corruption honesty, No. 37 in health care, and has less economic mobility than 40 years ago. We're #1 in incarceration; #1 in COVID-19 deaths. The happiest people on earth live in the Scandinavian socialist democracies. Why? COVID-19 holds a mirror to America. Many/most Americans conducted themselves with honor and generosity. Some haven't.

In European and Asian nations, COVID-19 is a medical problem; in America it's a political litmus test.

We've suffered grievously for that.

Democracy is fragile. America is not guaranteed survival. In the 1930's and 1940's, WE overcame threats, not one year, but for 16 years — working together. China's becoming the new Nazi state. The “1936 Rhineland Crisis” is Hong Kong. If the civilized world allows China to eat Hong Kong 27 years prematurely, bad things are ahead.

“American” corporations could have opposed this. They didn't.

This paper recently asked readers to support it with $ 30 annually.

We formerly had two local newspapers. Small newspapers were once community backbones.

Many are gone, with them, part of America. If “our” only news

source, not propaganda, is the internet, you can expect more hyper polarization, corruption and willful ignorance. Libraries might not exist.

Survivors speak out, Moller listens, acts In the last few years, survivors of sexual assault have been speaking out about loopholes in Minnesota law that allow their attackers to go free.

Among those loopholes is one that says that if a person voluntarily consumes alcohol, they cannot be considered mentally incapacitated. In the last few weeks, a Minnesota Supreme Court case unanimously confi rmed the meaning of this state law. The result was that a third-degree criminal misconduct conviction was overturned. The defendant will get a new trial because the woman who did not consent is not protected under our current laws related to intoxicated victims. This is unacceptable and the law needs to be changed.

The good news is that state Rep. Kelly Moller is on it! In 2019 she got a bill passed into law that created a working group to recommend changes to our sexual assault laws.

Many brave survivors told their stories about how they were denied justice. Moller authored a new bill this year that would enact the working group’s recommendations (HF707). The bill has moved through all necessary committees with bipartisan support and should pass the House.

The Supreme Court decision launched a media fi restorm, with coverage appearing not just in Minnesota newspapers and on TV stations, but in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and Newsweek. Only after this coverage did the Minnesota state Senate bring up the bill.

Bringing left and right together What would bring law enforcement, the ACLU and a conservative think-tank together on a bill in the state Legislature?

Well, not many things, but state Rep. Kelly Moller has authored a bill on civil forfeiture that is moving through the Minnesota House that attracted the support of all those groups.

Currently, if someone is arrested in Minnesota for certain drug or DWI violations, the defendant’s assets might be seized even though they have not been convicted. In some cases, these assets — like cars and cash — may also not have been part of the crime. Due process is often lacking, and expensive litigation is often required to get those assets back. People get in a new financial hole with the loss of those assets and attorney’s fees, making it harder for them to get on the straight and narrow. Reforming the state’s forfeiture laws has been a priority for advocates for racial justice and low-income Minnesotans.

Rep. Moller’s House File 75, which has been moving swiftly through committees in the House, would provide this needed reform.

It is supported by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Minnesota Police and Peace

Officers Association, Minnesota County Sheriffs Association, the Minnesota County Attorneys Association, criminal defense attorneys and the conservative Americans for Prosperity. I appreciate that Rep. Moller is working with this diverse coalition and pursuing these needed reforms.

There is help out there for your energy bills Many Minnesotans are having difficulty paying their heating and electricity bills amid the pandemic.

The State of Minnesota and a group called the Clean Energy Resource Teams may have some support to offer those feeling the burden of energy expenses.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce has funds available for energy assistance, and the recently approved federal stimulus includes over $100 million for Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program, nearly doubling the amount of support. If you qualify, you could receive significant assistance to help pay your energy bills. Eligible

applicants receive an initial grant between $ 300 and $1,600 for energy expenses and can be eligible for up to $1,200 more to help pay overdue bills, avoid a utility shut-off, or get a fuel delivery.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight March 21-22 from a Toyota Prius parked in a driveway in the 1600 block of Pinewood Drive.

• A Fridley woman, 22, was arrested at 2:46 a.m. March 23 on Hillview Road and Schutta Road for DWI after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of a lost and disoriented female walking the trails north of County Road I and Schutta Road.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight March 22-23 from a Toyota Prius parked in a driveway in the 1500 block of Knoll Drive.

• A resident in the 4800 block of Cumberland Street on March 24 reported identity theft after a cell phone service account was opened in her name. The transaction was interrupted and prevented. The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 3100 block of Lexington Avenue N. on March 24 reported becoming the victim of a computer service scam after he provided a scammer with remote access to his computer. Immediately after he did so, it was miraculously discovered that he had received an extra $3,500 refund to be placed into his bank account. He was then asked to repay the difference via gift cards. After he lost $2,000 paying via gift cards, the victim became suspicious.

• A Minneapolis man reported criminal damage to his property after the catalytic converter was ripped out of his Toyota Prius during the afternoon of March 24 after he left it parked in the YMCA lot in the 3700 block of Lexington Avenue N. and went inside to use the gym. Possible suspect information exists, and the case is under investigation.

• Staff at Lake Place Condominiums in the 3400 block of Kent Street on March 26 reported the fire key box broken off the building and the keys stolen from inside.

Deputies advised the HOA to change the locks.

• A resident in the 4600 block of Dale Street N. on March 26 reported attempted fraud resulting in no loss after all the notifications were made.

• A resident in the 100 block of Bridge Street reported

the front license plate stolen from his auto overnight March 26-27.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Honda Element overnight March 26-27 while it was parked in a lot in the 4000 block of Wilshire Circle.

• A package containing shoes was reported stolen March 29 from the public area of an apartment building in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Honda Civic over the weekend of March 26-29 while it was parked in a lot in the 3500 block of Owasso Street.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Toyota Prius parked in an apartment building lot in the 3500 block of Owasso Street overnight March 27-28.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies took possession of two replica pellet firearms for disposal after they were found in the 5800 block of Prairie Meadow Drive on March 29 and turned over to authorities.

• A Birchwood woman, 21, and a Stillwater man, 25, were arrested March 29 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. for motor vehicle theft after deputies recovered the U-Haul trailer they rented out of Maplewood Jan. 28 and never returned. The company sent out a letter to the subjects after the vehicle was not returned on its due date of Feb. 2. The subjects had significantly damaged the vehicle, swapped the license plates with another U-Haul vehicle and owed $2,725.87 in rental charges.

• A resident in the 5500 block of Donegal Drive on March 30 reported her identity used fraudulently to purchase a car in Illinois. Although the complainant said her

credit was impacted, she suffered no monetary loss.

The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 900 block of Monterey Drive reported her vehicle stolen overnight March 31-April 1. After the vehicle was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), it was learned that her vehicle had been privately towed by the neighborhood association for an overnight parking ban violation. The vehicle was then removed from the NCIC. • A catalytic converter was reported stolen April 1 from a Nissan Xterra while it was parked in an apartment lot in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. sometime between March 29 and April 1.

• A set of keys, including the key to a Toyota motor vehicle, was reported found April 2 in the 4100 block of Snail Lake Blvd. The keys were placed into property for their owner to claim.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Toyota Acura parked in a driveway in the 4600 block of Laura Lane overnight April 2-3. Deputies said this theft may be linked to an incident that resulted in the arrest of a St. Paul man.

• A St. Paul man, 21, was arrested at 5:26 a.m. April 3 in the 900 block of Tanglewood Drive after being suspected of stealing a catalytic converter. After being dispatched out on a suspicious activity report, deputies located the suspect vehicle and pursued it for nine minutes and covered 13 miles. The investigation awaits further evidence.

Blazing fire at Wild Mountain destroys maintenance building Fire crews responded to a fire at Wild Mountain in Taylor Falls early Tuesday morning on March 30.

The fire was in one of the maintenance buildings on the property and was contained by fire crews. No one was injured but many tools and machinery inside of the building were destroyed, according to Wild Mountain’s Facebook page.

A Birchwood woman, 21, faces up to ten years imprisonment and/or a maximum $20,000 fine for felony theft of a motor vehicle, after she and an accomplice refused to return a U-Haul they rented.

On Jan. 28, the suspect and a Stillwater male, 25, rented a 2020 Chevrolet moving truck from the Maplewood U-Haul and kept it well past its due date of Feb. 2. After the company sent the couple a letter demanding the vehicle's return and received no response, U-Haul reported the vehicle stolen on March 27.

On March 29, a Target store employee saw the stolen

truck behind the business in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue and called U-Haul to learn the vehicle had been stolen. Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies later located the vehicle driving in the area and conducted a traffic stop.

The subject, who was driving the vehicle, admitted to stealing it and ignoring the letter demanding its return.

The couple initially paid $84.80, but made no further payments toward the $2,725.87 rental tab. When the U-Haul van was recovered, it was significantly damaged, and its license plates had been swapped with that of another U-Haul truck.

Habitat for Humanity store celebrates Earth Day

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore outlet has been working to reduce waste, help the environment and generate funds to build houses for area residents for more than a decade.

The ReStore home improvement outlet in New Brighton, open to the public, sells new and likenew furniture, appliances and building materials at discounted prices.

The inventory comes from donations from individuals and companies.

ReStore is celebrating Earth Day by reducing waste and encouraging people to donate used goods to the store. It encourages people to recycle — by purchasing used goods and keeping tons of building materials and home furnishings out of landfi lls — and

repurposing — by encouraging do-ityourself projects, according to ReStore Director Pete O’Keefe.

“Our customers and donors tend to have a social purpose beyond donating or buying goods,”

O’Keefe said. “They want items with value to go to someone who can use it and ReStore can make

that happen. The best part is that proceeds from ReStore help build five affordable homes within the

Twin Cities. It’s environmentally friendly, and a lot of good comes out of the process.”

ReStore expects to keep 3 million pounds of used items out of landfi lls this year and has kept more than 10 million pounds out of landfi lls over the past five years.

This includes leftover building materials from construction and demolition, some of the biggest contributors to landfi ll waste, according to O’Keefe.

“The mission of ReStore is that all funds go directly into habitat homebuilding and their various programs,” O’Keefe said. “We’re taking usable items and giving them a second life, which is the ‘reuse’ and ‘repurpose’ of it all, and it goes to a good cause.”

Many vaccine hunting social media groups provide practical tips in finding open appointments, but they can also be a place for scammers to push phony vaccines and other cons. Centralized vaccine availability websites, similar to airfare aggregation sites, scan the databases of vaccine providers for availability. VaccineFinder. org is one such site promoted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Theater receives generous gift from Johnson & Johnson matriarch In early 2021, Lakeshore Players Theatre was notified it had acquired the former lake home of longtime donor and friend of the performing arts institution, Betty Wold Johnson.

Johnson, who died last May at age 99, was a Minnesota native whose affinity for the performing arts was evident in her philanthropical work, which included a major capital campaign contribution to build Lakeshore Players’ new home at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center.

Now her love of the performing arts will live on through her substantial legacy gift, read a press release from the theater. The Dellwood home is situated on the northeast side of White Bear Lake at 70 Dellwood Ave. Lakeshore Players Theatre immediately listed the home for sale, as it is against the organization’s gift policy to own physical property. The value of the house will be determined once the real estate has been sold. Funds will be used in myriad ways to help the organization.

Lakeshore Players Theatre Executive Director Rob Thomas said, “final decisions about (the donation) will be made once the house sells and we know how much we’re working with, but the money derived from the sale will be focused on ensuring a stable future for Lakeshore Players Theatre for decades to come.”

Johnson included the 68-year-old arts organization in her will through the gift of Legacy Giving, which designates causes one cares about to receive money, stock, securities or property upon one’s death.

While this monumental gift is one of the largest in Lakeshore Players Theatre’s history, Thomas noted that donations from the public are still vital for the theater to continue operating and providing programming for the community. The theater will continue to fundraise to ensure creative and sustainable growth. Betty married Robert Wood Johnson III, grandson of the Johnson & Johnson co-founder, during the war. They had five children before his death in 1970 at age 50; three

of her children also predeceased her. She was a lover of football — she spent formative years attending Golden Gophers games with her father — and sons Woody and Christopher Johnson own the New York Jets.

J-Roc Solheim, Mounds View’s 195-pound wrestler, placed sixth in the state Class 3A tournament, and finished his sophomore season 27-8 with 19 pins. “He is only the second sophomore to place for Mounds View since the 1960’s,” coach Daniel Engrebretsen said. Solheim was also a state qualifier as a freshman, with a 2215 mark, and should be a highly-ranked wrestler his last two years when he faces more opponents his own age or younger.

Solheim’s other sport is football. His first name is Jacob, but he goes by J Roc, Engebretson said.

Gov. Tim Walz has proclaimed April Military Child Month. More than 40% of military personnel have children who remain at home without their parents or guardians during deployments. More than 23,000 children in Minnesota have at least one parent or guardian currently serving in active military duty.

Walz’s proclamation reads in part, “It is fitting that we recognize and honor their sacrifices, celebrate their spirts, and let our military personnel in uniform know that while they are taking care of us, we are looking out for their children. By recognizing Military Child Month, we pay tribute to military children for their commitment sacrifice and unconditional support for our troops.

Bill provides safe harbor for news publishers to collectively negotiate with tech platforms Minnesota Newspaper Association joins the News Media Alliance and other state press associations in applauding U.S. House Antitrust Chairman David Cicilline (D-RI), ranking member Ken Buck (R-CO), Senate Antitrust Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. John N. Kennedy (R-LA) for reintroducing the “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act” (JCPA). The bill provides a limited antitrust safe harbor for news publishers to collectively negotiate with Facebook and Google for fair compensation for the use of their content.

In response to the bill reintroduction in both the House and Senate, News Media Alliance President and CEO David Chavern, said, “This is a huge milestone for U.S. news publishers. As we have

seen over the last several weeks in Australia and Europe, the world is moving toward new compensation systems for publishers. The cost of inaction, in terms of the spread of misinformation we are all experiencing, is simply too great to ignore any longer. Quality journalism is key to sustaining civic society, and we must ensure that the digital ecosystem returns value back to the people who create that journalism.”

Duration of License. A license shall be issued for a period of time not to exceed the expiration date of the rabies vaccination. No dog or cat license shall be renewed without proof of vaccination.

Issuance of License. Upon completion of the application form, receipt of the license fee and receipt of the proof of vaccination, the City Manager shall cause a dog or cat license to be issued to the applicant for a particular dog or cat.

PANDEMIC WEDDINGS: Can still be ‘memory of a lifetime’

The couple was planning to get married at a small ceremony at a resort up north on April 30. In March, they found out they would need to cancel and start their venue search all over again.

Lund explained that after the couple had worked out most of the details for their ceremony, the venue let go of its wedding planner and the general manager took over. “We reached out to try to square away all of the details we had organized with the other gal,” she said.

“We were not getting very clear answers, and we were getting a lot of pushback.”

Lund said they were told they would need to change their menu, so they asked some questions and inquired about menu prices and were ultimately told, “It’s probably best you cancel your event.”

At one point, Lund says the manager told them he didn’t see the point of them having such a small wedding (around 20 people).

“It was super unprofessional what the guy was saying and how he was conducting himself … How did this escalate from clarifying some things to ‘it’s best if (you) just cancel?’”

Kieger said.

Lund added, “I was devastated ... I went

from being super sad to super mad.”

The very next day after they were told to cancel, the couple left on a planned ski trip up north. While they were gone, Lund’s mother and sister sprang into action and found another venue that was much closer to home and — miraculously — available on April 30.

The couple will get married at Como Park Zoo in St. Paul, and their reception will be at Tria in North Oaks.

“The whole thing ended up being a blessing,” Lund explained.

Lund and Kieger offered advice to couples who are planning weddings during the pandemic. “Have communication with your venue; it can help to ease your mind with planning and make you excited to get married. Unanswered questions or delays between communication can cause unneeded stress as your wedding approaches. Even if your wedding is looking different than what you may have dreamed of, it will always be the memory of a lifetime ... and it is something to be celebrated, even in a pandemic.”

Jordan and Rob Jordan Bergman-Rushton and Rob Rushton had been planning their big day for two years when the pandemic hit and threatened to change

everything.

Bergman-Rushton is a 2011 White Bear Lake grad and Rushton is from Wisconsin. They became engaged in October 2018.

The St. Paul residents were planning marry on Aug. 15, 2020 at a family cabin. A large reception was planned for the following weekend at Kellerman’s Event Center in White Bear Lake. The couple decided to still get married on that date with immediate friends and family members but postponed their reception.

“We just tried to be as safe as possible,” Bergman-Rushton said. “I made everyone wedding-themed masks, and we gave everyone hand sanitizer.”

The one thing the couple was really stressing about was whether their grandparents would be able to attend the ceremony. Thankfully, one set of grandparents was able to be there for their special day.

“Just to be surrounded by family, maybe it was because of COVID, but it felt even more special that they were there. We were feeling the love,” she said. “These people were risking their lives to celebrate this day with my husband and I.” This August, the couple hopes they will be able to gather with around 150 family and friends at Kellerman’s for their postponed reception.
