SHOREVIEW — Besides giving back to the community through projects for several area nonprofits, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church’s Day of Service teaches children how they can share with others.

The biannual Day of Service launched about three years ago.

Church member Barb Bester, of Shoreview, attends regularly with her children and grandchildren. “We thought it was a great way to help the kids understand that it’s really important to help others and to be a part of that,�

Bester said. “To be able to do all of that together as a family is really special.�

This year, Bester and her family members put together school supply kits for students in need. They compiled things like books, scissors and pencils. They also helped make tie blankets for families in need. “We worked together on it,� Bester said. “They loved that.�

Church member Gary Ackert, of Shoreview, said he enjoyed working with youth and adults at Island Lake Park in Shoreview. Five retirees and three youth picked up trash and fallen branches, and even a few dead squirrels, Ackert said. He enjoyed getting to work with people he didn’t know very well; it helps the church become a family, he noted. He often volunteers with landscaping at the church but doesn’t

frequently interact with the youth. “Getting to work with the three young people that came and helped — and they did a great job — that was an extra blessing that doesn’t happen very often for me,� Ackert said. He’s been involved in the day of service since it began after the church’s new head pastor Renee Patterson was installed. “The days of service is a way of reaching out and translating our beliefs into action for the community,� he noted.

Mounds View student named Presidential Scholar

Mounds View High School senior Michael Pak, of Shoreview, was named one of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars across the U.S. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the 55th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars last week, recognizing high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career and technical education fields. “I want to congratulate this year’s class of Presidential Scholars on their achievement both inside of the classroom and out,� DeVos said. “Their hard work

Reel Hope Project highlights children looking for families

The Gallery 96 Spring 2019 Exhibition has opened. It will be displayed in the Shoreview Library through June 22.

May is foster care awareness month. The Reel Hope Project works directly with counties, adoption agencies and faith communities to create “reels” for Minnesota children who are waiting to be adopted. Through collaboration with the state of Minnesota’s Department of Human Services, they have made videos for almost 100 kids and have connected nearly 200 families to counties and agencies to learn more or start the adoption process. In 2 1/2 years, the Reel Hope Project has grown from a group of volunteers to a staff of four people, hundreds of donors and multiple teams that share these videos across the state. Their goal is simple: A forever family for every child. Of the 10,000 kids in foster care in Minnesota, 1,000 are waiting to be adopted. For more information, visit thereelhopeproject.org.

On stage: ‘Small Mouth Sounds’ A theater presentation and discussion led by local actors and teaching artists Ansa Akyea and Maria Asp will be held at 7 p.m. June 3 at the Shoreview library. Kraus-Anderson has begun construction on a $24.7 million expansion at Irondale High School, where students from northern Shoreview attend.

Backed by a $165 million bond issue, Irondale High School is within the second phase of a three-phase, districtwide project for Mounds View Public Schools that includes 12 school buildings.

Designed by Wold Architects and Engineers, the extensive 80,000-square-foot project features seven new flexible classrooms and breakout spaces, science lab, expanded hallways and a contemporary 25,700-square-foot, 650-seat auditorium with dressing rooms and scene shops for use by students and community groups. Construction also includes the removal of the pool to accommodate a new fitness center and multipurpose area.

Additions also feature four open common spaces for students to collaborate, a large gathering space for community events, as well as a new 5,600-square-foot administration office.

Wump World soapbox

M

y all-time favorite children’s author is the late Bill Peet. He wrote great books with memorable themes like “Zella, Zack and Zodiac,” and “Chester the Worldly Pig,” and was one of Walt Disney’s top illustrators/ writers. His name is credited on the immortal movie “Dumbo,” among other Disney classics. Another Peet gem is “The Wump World.” It’s a story about herbivorous creatures called Wumps that are driven underground when aliens, aptly called Pollutians, invade their tiny planet.

The Wumps are forced to leave their lush, green environment to Feeling subsist on fungus, or whatever else they can find growing in caves Inspired below the surface, while the new Debra Neutkens inhabitants cover just about every square inch of their beautiful world with concrete and trash.

When the Pollutians have exhausted a world’s resources, they send a scouting party into the universe to find a new planet to conquer. In keeping with their method operandi, the invaders eventually leave and the fearful Wumps return to the surface to find their green world a vast sea of highways, skyscrapers and heaps of garbage. And then, a miracle. A crack in the concrete allows a tiny seedling to erupt and the joyful Wumps have hope for the future.

I think about that poignant story, written in 1970 by the insightful Peet, when I see another big box store bite the dust, or a drug store close its doors when a competitor moves across the street, or one more strip mall, office condo or manufacturing plant sit vacant and decaying on what was once green space. It seems no patch of land can escape someone’s need to cover it with concrete.

I thought about Peet’s story last week when I received an April 29 press release announcing the world population clock at the Loro Parque Foundation in the Canary Islands reached the historic figure of 7.7 billion people. Based on estimates by the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs, noted the foundation, there will be more than 8 billion people by 2023.

The report then pointed out the obvious — that more human inhabitants on this planet will lead to more resource depletion, more endangered species, more deforestation and more pollution.

That story was followed by a report last week, also citing a United Nations study, that says humans are causing extinction at a rate never before seen in history. It is by sheer coincidence that this week’s political cartoonist also picked up on that alarming prediction. The 1500-page report estimates that more than one million species are at imminent risk for extinction.

I will blame it partly on plastic. It was heartbreaking to see news clips of a dead whale found with 90 pounds of plastic in its stomach and who can forget the viral photograph of a tiny seahorse clutching a plastic Q-tip in the Pacific. The photo was a finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition from the Natural History Museum in London.

Climate change and deforestation, extinctions and mountains of garbage are big, big problems. I certainly don’t have the answers. I’m not trying to be a Debby downer; I just hope everyone does their part in some small way to protect the planet. Please repurpose and recycle.

Let’s not end up like Wumps hoping for a miracle.

The state of Lyme disease in Minnesota

hen it comes to tick-related illness in Minnesota, the numbers aren’t in our favor.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Minnesota is at the epicenter of tick-related illness with the seventhhighest tally in the country of 26,886 confirmed cases of tick-borne infections between 2004 and 2016.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 1,408 confirmed Lyme disease cases in our state in 2017. There were an additional 910 probable cases or physician-diagnosed that did not Movers & cases meet criteria for Shakers confirmed cases but had laboratory Carolyn McClain evidence of infection.

Here are other important facts about Lyme disease in Minnesota: • Lyme disease is spread by the deer tick. It is important to educate yourself on the appearance of this specific tick. It looks very different than the common wood tick • The blacklegged ticks that spreads Lyme disease are smaller than a pinhead –less than one millimeter, or 0.04 inch. Yes, that is 4/100 of an inch.

• The infected tick must be attached for at least 24-48 hours to transmit the bacteria. The chances of getting Lyme disease increase the longer the tick is attached.

• Limited to 350 words.

• Prevention of Lyme disease includes staying away from tick-infested areas such as long grasses, brush, stumps, fallen logs and the leaf litter under trees. When in these areas check yourself often for ticks.

Remember, a tick must be attached for greater than 24 hours to spread disease.

• Wear light colored clothing and tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

• Use bug spray with DEET. • Always do a thorough tick check after being outside.

• Protect your pets. Use flea and tick preventative on your pets as they can carry ticks indoors and onto furniture and beds.

If you do find a tick on yourself, remove it promptly following these steps: • If possible, use a pair of tweezers to grasp the tick by the head. ° Grasp the tick close to the skin ° Pull the tick outward slowly, gently and steadily ° Do not squeeze the tick ° Use an antiseptic on the bite.

Avoid folk remedies like Vaseline, nail polish remover or burning matches — they are not a safe or effective way to remove ticks. Consult your doctor or head to the UR if you are having trouble removing the tick or if you are noticing any abnormal signs and symptoms after the bite.

• Months after the onset of the illness, symptoms can become serious and include: multiple rashes, paralysis on one side of the face, heart palpitations, arthritis and severe fatigue.

• The signs of Lyme disease are different for everyone, but the most common complaint is “flulike” symptoms. Early signs and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes — all common in the flu. In up to 80% of Lyme infections, a rash is one of the first symptoms. Lyme disease causes a very characteristic bull’s eye rash. The presence of this rash is enough for the diagnosis of Lyme disease.

• Early diagnosis of Lyme disease can make all the difference by reducing the severity of the disease.

• Lyme disease is diagnosed through a physical examination and blood test.

• Blood tests may be negative within the first 2-3 weeks of illness. A blood test is not required for diagnosis of early Lyme disease when the characteristic rash is present. The blood test is an important part of diagnosis for patients who have been ill for more than one month.

• Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics.

• Antibiotics are very effective in killing the bacteria. Treatment is most effective early in the course of Lyme disease. Lyme disease detected later is also treatable with antibiotics but can cause symptoms that may take longer to go away,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you for climate change leadership Last week the Minnesota House of Representatives passed its energy and climate bill, and I’m happy that our local representatives Kelly Moller and Jamie Becker-Finn supported this legislation. This bill would increase our renewable energy standard for electricity from 25% by 2025 (which we met seven years early) to 100% by 2050.

Americans are fi nding out daily just how costly doing nothing on climate will be. More intense precipitation in Minnesota is just one of those costs. But technology is improving every day also, including battery storage, and the price of renewable energy continues to drop. Our young people are pleading with our elected officials to act—since they are the ones who will pay for the consequences of our inaction—and Moller and Becker-Finn have responded with their votes. The Republican-held Senate didn’t even hold a hearing on the renewable energy goal. In fact, 50 Republicans in the House voted against the statement “that greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activities are a key cause of climate change.”

We will see if the new renewable legislation will make it through a conference committee to the Governor’s desk. In the meantime, thank you, Reps. Moller and Becker-Finn for your leadership.

Moller does her part on gun violence prevention It’s been almost six months since the November election when voters like me supported Kelly Moller for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

A main reason for my support was her clear stance to stand up for preventing gun violence.

She and her colleagues in the Minnesota House are following through. After a lengthy committee process, this week the House passed a public safety bill that includes a red flag law and closing the loophole for criminal background checks.

Not a week goes by without another shooting making the news. Just this week it was University of North Carolina - Charlotte. Just over 20 years ago it was Columbine. And yet these aren’t even the most common types of gun violence.

Suicides, domestic abuse, individual homicides and gun accidents claim the lives of hundreds of Minnesotans a year.

The public safety bill’s gun violence prevention provisions will help decrease these deaths. They won’t got to zero, but evidence shows that in states with these policies, gun deaths decrease. For me, saving one life is worth it. It will save tens if not hundreds of lives. Is that worth it for you?

Apparently, our Minnesota Senate doesn’t think so. The Senate has not given a hearing to this legislation, but there is at least the potential for success in conference committee before the session adjourns on May 20. Thanks to Kelly, we have a chance at a safer future.

More housing, especially low-income, needed

Ramsey County has a shortage of low-income housing units. A number of such houses could be built in the Rice Creek Commons project. That is a win for Ramsey County. An extra 1,000 housing units would make the project more fi nancially

attractive for the developer and the bank or banks that fi nance the project; a win for the developer and the banks. Finally, another 1,000 families in the area would be an extra boost for our local economy. That is a win for Arden Hills as well as the surrounding cities. The project, as proposed to be modified by the developer and the county, would be a win-win-win. So, what is the problem? The mayor of Arden Hills and the City Council and former Rep. Randy Jessup (Shoreview Press letter, April 30) appear to have an aversion to more lowincome housing regardless of whether it makes sense from so many perspectives. One wonders what is wrong with the mayor and the council. A clear majority of voters in District 42A already voted out Randy Jessup.

Isaacson is never afraid to speak up for what is right and point out injustices in funding for our higher education institutions.

He has been a longtime advocate for increased funding, lower tuition costs and supporting students in their educational pursuits. He is a great asset to the Senate Higher Education committee.

We need funding for election cybersecurity Last month I wrote to Sen. Chamberlain expressing my concern regarding the $6.6 million Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funding for election cybersecurity. He replied with two sentences: I assure you, the bill that passed off the Senate floor allows for the federal match of HAVA funds and is sufficient to meet the needs of our election system. In earlier testimony the Secretary of State confi rmed the same.

I feel this reply was misleading and evasive.

Senator Chamberlain knows that the HAVA funding bill is being held hostage in a Conference Committee by three Senate Republicans who are not negotiating in good faith. It seems they are not doing their job – they didn’t even show up at the last two meetings of the conference committee.

They will not move from their position of partial funding, $1.5 million, nor will they discuss what will happen to the remaining $5.1 million federal funds.

Senator Chamberlain is also likely aware that since January and as recently as last month, Secretary of State Simon, officials from Homeland Security, cybersecurity experts, and local election officials have testified in numerous legislative hearings that full funding of $6.6 million is needed to protect our election system from sophisticated hackers who could disrupt our Statewide Voter Registration System. Secretary of State Simon, in a MinnPost article from Feb. 22 asserted, “Everyday that goes by without legislative approval to use this money that Congress and the president intended for our use . . . is a day that it makes it harder for us to secure our system for 2020.”

Funding for election cybersecurity is nonpartisan and noncontroversial. These funds are critical to the security of our elections. I expect Chamberlain to speak up in his Caucus and tell the three senators on the Conference Committee to do the right thing: engage in meaningful negotiations and agree to authorize full funding of $6.6 million ASAP. I also expect him to be forthright with his constituents when they ask questions about legislative issues.

No good reason not to fund cybersecurity I agree with both people who wrote that Minnesota Senate Republicans should act immediately to pass a bill authorizing full access to the $6.6 million in federal funding for the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) (see “Funding for election cybersecurity critical,” by Katherine Tomsich, and “Pass election cybersecurity bill,” by Carolyn Winters Folke in the April 30 issue of the Shoreview Press).

The Secretary of State has a fully-vetted, comprehensive plan to make sure our elections are safe from foreign and domestic threats.

That plan has been approved by cybersecurity experts, elections officials, and legislators from both parties. Work needs to start now in order for the necessary systems to be in place for the 2020 elections. Yet, Senate Republicans have offered no good reason for refusing to even show up at Conference Committee hearings to discuss the bill.

Every Minnesotan wants a secure elections system. It’s one of the few things we can all agree on. So, why would we be the only state without access to the funding that we need to make our system more secure? There is no doubt that Minnesota will be targeted again by hackers, as we were in the 2016 elections. Why should we make it easier for them? LUNCH LADY: Advocates for fresh food, healthy eating FROM PAGE 1

Pena was named the state winner earlier this year and was then surprised by a visit from Minnesota School Nutrition Association (MNSNA) President Amy Thering, who carried a tiara when she announced that Pena was the Midwest Regional Manager of the Year.

The honor given by the national School Nutrition Association (SNA) is considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn. The award recognizes a cafeteria manager who demonstrates dedication and ingenuity, according to SNA. Pena will be honored at SNA’s annual national conference in St. Louis this summer, along with the other regional winners. From among the six, the Southeast regional winner from Tennessee was named the national winner.

Pena has been managing Island Lake Elementary’s kitchen for about three years. She’s been working in nutrition services in Mounds View Public Schools for five years.

Finding a career in the field she now loves came by happenstance. A friend started working in nutrition services and recommended it. Pena was drawn to fi nd a job in the field so she could have the same days off as her children and quit struggling with day care costs. She started out working three hours a day.

“I worked my way up as quickly as I could,” she noted. “I ended up loving it.”

Two years ago, Pena won an award for being involved in legislative action. She has traveled to Washington, D.C., twice for SNA’s National Conference to advocate for federal funding for nutrition services. “It ignited my passion for school nutrition and advocating for children and feeding them,” she said. “Some kids go home and do not have the luxury of fresh fruits and veggies.”

Island Lake Elementary School’s cafeteria — and most school cafeterias today — look different than school lunches did decades ago. Gone are the days of canned pears and peaches floating in sugary syrup on lunchroom trays day after day.

“We have a lot of fresh fruits and veggies every day,” Pena said. There is a salad bar once a month.

The kitchen doesn’t use fryers. “When I went to school, everything was brown,” she remembered.

Even with the progress that has been made in school nutrition, Pena thinks there is still room for change. This year in Washington she advocated for

additional federal funding for breakfast programs throughout the U.S. She wants to see more federal dollars to offer fresh fruits for breakfast because they are currently not available at Island Lake and many schools. “That is really the most important meal of the day,” she noted. About 100 children eat breakfast at Island Lake Elementary each day, which she serves singlehandedly. Pena also advocated for a law that would require students to have at least 20 minutes to sit down and eat, not including time standing in line. Healthy food does little good if kids don’t have time to eat it, she said.

The children are what motivates Pena to feed them well. “I love seeing them grow up. I love seeing them every day,” she said. “I think it is just awesome to work with children.”

Island Lake Elementary Principal Todd Durand said Pena includes creative items in the lunch menus and makes it a fun place to be. On April Food’s Day, she told the students they would be having liver and onions, only to surprise them with hamburgers instead.

“It is so fun she and her team are always smiling,” Durand said. “Nothing seems to bother them about how busy it is; the little hiccups don’t feel like they bother them at all.” Pena is very deserving of the award, he noted. She and her team serve 500 students lunch every school day.

“When you ask kids what their favorite part of the day is, oftentimes they say lunch,” Durand said.

“She has a great team; she has led that team to really have a great spirit about making it fun.”

Pena said she was nominated by one of her coworkers in the kitchen. According to her nomination application from SNA, colleagues have described Pena as a dedicated team player who inspires loyalty and has a highly disciplined work ethic. She keeps cafeteria atmosphere light and

cheerful with decorations and staff attire for special dress-up days such as pajama day and Halloween. She promotes camaraderie and reaches beyond the cafeteria, sending special birthday cards to teachers and administrators and serving as a liaison between school staff, administration and the kitchen staff.

Pena also interacts with students outside of the cafeteria. She has read “The Lunch Lady” book series in classrooms or answered questions about the lunchroom and nutrition. She occasionally invites a “Mystery Guest Server” to get students more excited about mealtime and worked with student council members to serve a healthy meal at their event.

Pena is the president of the MNSNA North Ramsey Chapter 8. She coordinates meetings with about 100 attendees. She organizes training sessions that range from kitchen ergonomics to “lunch lady self-defense” and is planning Farm to Table field trips.

She also served on the MNSNA Annual Conference committee in fall 2018 and helped orchestrate presentations, procure speakers and staff the reception area. She has attended four leadership development sessions and currently serves on MNSNA’s Leadership Development Committee. She has been invited to serve as a voting member in the House of Delegates at the conference and asked to be a part of an exclusive focus group to help with the development of new training sessions and webinar series. She is on the Minnesota Public Policy Legislative Committee.

“Jessica Pena brings a unique passion for nutrition education to our community, inspiring colleagues to keep learning and growing as professionals,” said SNA President Gay Anderson. “She has shown a dedication to her district and to the health and happiness of her students, creating a positive lunchroom atmosphere, serving nutritious meals and supporting well-prepared staff.”

According to SNA, the Manager of the Year Award is given in honor of Louise Sublette, a leader in school nutrition in her state and in the national School Nutrition Association. During her 43 years in the profession, Sublette worked in many areas of foodservice — public schools, colleges, hospitals and elderly feeding programs. Sublette dedicated her career to honoring school nutrition professionals and ensuring those who work in school cafeterias have access to professional development opportunities.

“We are there to be neighbors in our community,” Good said. School supply kits will go to Camp Noah, which provides camps to children after tragedies like hurricanes, and Lutheran World Relief, which sends backpacks to children in economically developing nations.

Volunteers made snack packs for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, which gives them to needy youth in the Mounds View Public Schools district.

They made sandwiches and laundry soap bags for Open Hands Midway, a resource for the economically challenged; prepared donated medical supplies for Global Health Ministries; and went to People Serving People to volunteer to clean. They made new mother kits for area crisis nurseries, put together welcome home baskets with cleaning supplies for those transitioning from homelessness, and made paracord bracelets for those in the military. They wrote thank you cards to local first responders and put together kindness bags for panhandlers with snacks and hygiene essentials. Church members keep them in their car to pass out during the year, Good noted.

Last year, the youth mission trip was in the Twin Cities so that students could better connect with some of the organizations the church works with on Day of Service. “It’s not just them doing something for other people but building relationships with people,” Good said. The goal isn’t to fix a problem but step in where there is injustice

and walk alongside people, she added.

“It’s not just something we do on Sunday,” she said. “The intent is to build our faith up and understand how we live our lives as people of God.” Meeting housewares needs at furniture bank Bridging Donor Relations Manager Maggie Mau, a Shepherd church member, organized the tie blanket project and a kitchen kit packing project.

Although often known as a furniture bank for families in need, Bridging also supplies housewares, linens, dishes and small appliances. The kitchen kits are compiled of essential kitchen items like cooking spoons, a can opener, spatula, hot pads and towels. Bridging started asking volunteers to put together the kits when they realized many clients didn’t take donations of canned goods because they didn’t have a can opener, Mau said. With only an hour to pick out an entire household of goods, the kitchen kits prepacked with essentials are easy to grab. Community events like Shepherd’s Day of Service also gather donations for the kitchen kits.

Each family that sets up a home through Bridging also receives comforters and blankets. The tie blankets will become a throw blanket for a family. “It is a perfect project to involve families during days of service,” Mau noted. Day of Service helps people support others in an impactful and accessible way. “It engages community members who are looking for a way to give back in an organized, wellthought-out way,” she said.

who have experienced a fire, immigrants and refugees, and those dealing with generational or persistently low income. There is no income requirement, but 90 percent of clients referred to Bridging have a household income of about $20,000 or less per year.

“We serve about 4,500 families a year in the Twin Cities,” Mau said. About 180 agencies refer clients to either the Roseville or Bloomington location.

Bridging gives out about 14 semitrailers of furniture and household goods every week, so it needs 14 semitrailers of donations coming in, too, Mau noted. About 70 percent of the organization’s donations come from residents and 30 percent from corporations.

“If people stopped giving us stuff, the 60,000 square feet of warehouse space, in three weeks, would be empty,” Mau said.

Bridging maintains a quality stan-

dard for its donations — clean, functioning and in good condition with no odors, excessive pet hair, rips or stains. When a donor gives something below standard that volunteers didn’t catch at the door, Bridging donates it elsewhere. For example, it gives linens to the Humane Society. The organization tries not to throw anything away. Each year, Bridging keeps about 10 million pounds of stuff out of the landfill.

Lions Club gala puts kids first The Arden Hills/Shoreview Lions Club held its fi rst community event, a “Kids First” Gala, April 26 at the Shoreview Community Center.

“We had a great ‘Kids First’ Gala because of our generous sponsors, food providers, business and individual gift donors and our fun-loving crowd. Thanks to the entire community for your generosity,” said Arden Hills/Shoreview Lions Club President Judy Zewers of Shoreview.

Proceeds from “Kids First” will go to the Lions preschool vision screening program, KidSight; the Ronald McDonald House organization that supports families experiencing pediatric cancer or other children’s diseases requiring hospital stays; Shoreview Library reading promotion efforts for kids; Mounds View Schools financial assistance to promote equal access to educational programs; and the Kids in Need Foundation that provides school supplies for families in need.

Jeff Dahlman, executive director of the Kids in Need Foundation, explained the foundation’s work at the gala. Jamie Grant spoke for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, telling about her own experience at the Ronald McDonald House near Children’s Hospital during her son’s lengthy hospitalizations.

“This was our fi rst communitywide event, the beginning of a Lions Club tradition of service and fun for Arden Hills/Shoreview. Watch for more Lions events to come,” Zewers noted.

Teacher grant funds educational travels

A local history teacher will be taking a trip to Florence, Italy, to study Renaissance art and architecture and bring alive the past for his students.

Brian Martinez has been teaching sixth through eighth grade history at Liberty Classical Academy in White Bear Lake for three years. He's been a teacher for 22 years.

Martinez received the grant, of about $4,500, from Fund for Teachers and the Vadnais Heights Area Community Foundation (VHACF).

“Professionally, it is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Martinez said.

“I think it brings the past into the current for students.”

He teaches medieval, Renaissance and Reformation and modern history. Before coming to Liberty, he was not very familiar with the Renaissance and conducted considerable research in order to teach about it, he said. This is why he chose Florence as a place to further his education in person. For one week this summer, he will visit museums and focus on how art and architecture of the era influenced history. He will also take students on field trips in the Twin Cities to see how Minnesota was influenced by Renaissance art and architecture. His experience in Italy will help bring history alive for students, he added.

“There's just a sense of joy that I have been given this opportunity,” he said.

Approximately half of the annual grant is funded by each entity. Any PreK-12 teacher in the White Bear Lake or Mounds View district areas can apply. For two or more teachers working together, the grant can be up to about $10,000.

VHACF has funded several teachers to travel in order to further their expertise on a topic related to their teaching, Janneke said. “By going and experiencing, it brings context to everything you teach,” said VHACF Chair Jerry Moynagh.

The fi rst grant awarded in 2011 was

for two teachers to attend a conference in Minnesota, Janneke noted. In 2012, two teachers attended a conference in New York. Beginning in 2013, grant recipients have traveled internationally to Namibia, Argentina, Poland, London, Spain and Iceland.

The grant amount was increased in 2016 with the support of Fund for Teachers. This year, Fund for Teachers awarded $2 million in grants to 502 teachers.

Raymond Plank, who grew up in Wayzata, Minnesota, founded Fund for Teachers in 2001. He founded and managed Apache Corporation, a glob-

al energy enterprise, for 55 years.

Since he founded Fund for Teachers nearly 20 years ago as a way to do something for the community, the fund has given grants to 8,500 teachers nationally.

A Vadnais Heights Area Community Foundation committee selects a local winner of the grant each year. Applications for next year open Oct. 1. Senator learns about area’s career education

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — U.S. Senator Tina Smith met with students and community members to learn more about the area’s career education opportunities April 24 at a meeting hosted by the White Bear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Smith is on the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education and Labor. She came to the area to learn about what the community is doing to promote career connections between employers and students in fields like health care and manufacturing.

By 2024, there is expected to be a shortage of

100,000 workers for jobs in such industries, Smith said during the meeting at Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) in Vadnais Heights. She wants Minnesota to be a good place to grow a business and live, she noted. She is working on a bill that would expand funding for partnerships between businesses and high schools.

Students shared with Smith about the opportunities they have had to study career pathways while still in high school. Tyler Orlando has been studying in an EMT program through Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District. Lauren Mathaus has studied medical careers through District 916 and Eli Knight has studied diesel mechanics skills, like cutting and welding. The District 916 Career and Technical Center housed at Century College has 20 programs for students. The center is available to junior and senior students in 14 area school districts.

White Bear Lake Area Schools has four of its own career pathways programs in-house — manufacturing, construction, health care and information technology. Kyle Anderson explained the White

Bear Lake Area Schools career pathways manufacturing program. He said he likes working with his hands and machines, and his decision to study welding and manufacturing in college was solidified when he took a manufacturing and applied engineering class in high school.

He also participated in the NE Metro Manufacturing Education Partnership between the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation, area school districts and Ramsey County. The program offers paid internships to career pathways students, in partnership with local businesses. Joy VanderHeiden of Schwing America, which participates in the internship, said it is a good way to fi nd workers.

Smith said it is important students are exposed to a variety of great career opportunities and are not just pushed toward a four-year degree as a default.

“It is not a good fit for a lot of students,” she noted.

Smith also toured Century College to see the school’s career training facilities to prepare students for 21st-century jobs.

Mustang girls rise to challenge, regain true-team title

Mounds View girls track will return to the state true-team meet, after a one-year absence, by virtue of their Section 6AAA championship at home Tuesday, May 7, led by Julia Fixsen’s dominant showing.

“It was an awesome performance for our team,” said Aaron Redman, co-coach with Scott Ylkanen. “Across the board, the girls elevated their level of competition and rose to the occasion.”

The Mustangs missed state last year for the first time since 2004.

“The girls had extra motivation this offseason and going into the meet,” Redman said.

“Looking forward to competing at state with the best in Minnesota. It will be a great opportunity to take our season to another level.”

Mounds View advances to the state Class 3A true-team meet Friday at Stillwater.

Fixsen just missed the maximum amount of points. The University of Georgia recruit won pole vault (13-0), long jump (17-4 1/2), and high jump (5-4), while placing second in 100 hurdles.

And there were other stellar, versatile performances as well.

Mounds View boys track will make their 11th consecutive state true-team appearance and 22nd in 23 years after capturing the Section 6AAAA title at home Tuesday, May 7.

Strong in all areas, the Mustangs amassed 1,093 points, followed by Roseville Area, 964, and Minneapolis Southwest, 658.5, for top three among nine.

The state Class 3A competition will be held Friday in Stillwater.

Joshua Thomsen won both 110 highs and 300 intermediate hurdles, and the Mustangs had three of the top eight in each of those.

Mike Louderback soared 14 feet to win pole vault, a foot above his previous season best. Nick Sharma won the 100 dash and took second in the 200.

Jack Roeberg won triple jump and took third in long jump.

Commissioner Huffman resigns

Local legislators invite community members to a Town Hall Meeting recapping the 2019 legislative session.

Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn (DFL – Roseville), Rep. Kelly Moller (DFL – Shoreview) and Sen. Jason Isaacson (DFL – Shoreview) invite constituents to meet with them from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 8, at the Shoreview Library, 4560 Victoria St. N. The legislators hosting the meeting represent all or parts of the communities of Shoreview and Vadnais Heights. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners received notice from Commissioner Blake Huffman May 8 that he is resigning from the board effective June 1.

Huffman apparently resigned due to fi nancial issues with his nonprofit affordable housing organization, Journey Home Minnesota. He was accused by the county of confl ict of interest.

“On behalf of the Ramsey County Board, we recognize this difficult decision as best for our community, our organization and for Commissioner Huffman and his family,” stated Jim McDonough, board chair.

Blake Huffman was fi rst elected in 2012 to represent District 1 (Arden Hills, Gem Lake, North Oaks, Shoreview, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Township and parts of Mounds View, Spring Lake Park and Blaine) on the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners. He was reelected in 2016.

By law, a special election will be required to fi ll the office of Ramsey County Commissioner representing District 1 until the current term expires in 2020. At its May 14 meeting, the board planned to vote on appointments to fi ll committee assignments Commissioner Huffman currently holds and will discuss other business related to the resignation.

NAME IN THE NEWS Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan appointed Wayne Doe, of Shoreview, to the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage.

The term began May 6 and will run through Jan. 2023.
