Area business owner patiently waiting for kidney and Shoreview. About three months after he purchased the business, Tuohy’s health problems began to spiral.

It all started with a blister on his foot, which became infected. The infection ultimately reached his bone.

Eventually, Tuohy had to have one of his toes amputated. He was in and out of the hospital with infections and decided in 2015 to have his left leg amputated below the knee to keep the infections at bay.

“It was really the best thing

Ever since she was a little girl growing up in Shoreview, Anna Grace Hottinger has been self-motivated and remarkably focused on the things that are important to her, according to her mother Kathryn Hottinger.

“As a parent, I’ve had to stand back and watch and support her in the things she takes a lead on. She finds a niche and she moves forward,” Kathryn said. “When she sets her sights on something, she just goes and gets it done. My job is to be her cheerleader, support her, and try not to get in her way.”

When Anna Grace noticed that tobacco products such as e-cigarettes were growing in popularity among her peers, she decided to take action.

She helped organize students to speak at the Shoreview City Council meetings to advocate for raising the age at which people can legally buy tobacco from 18 to 21. Recently, she gathered supporters to ban sales of all flavored tobacco, including men-

An area business owner who has always been there for the community now needs the community to be there for him.

Farrell Tuohy, owner of Pizza Man & Corner Malt Shop in White Bear Lake, hopes he can find someone who is willing to give him one of their kidneys. He has been on dialysis for a little over a year now, and soon will be officially on the waitlist to receive a kidney.

“The prognosis for a person who has my situation and gets a living donor, they can live 20 to 40 years compared to being on dialysis for 10 years, which is like a prison sentence,” he said.

“The average wait for kidney transplant is eight years.

You get elevated on that list depending on how bad you get. The sicker you are, the higher you go on the list.”

How it started Tuohy, 58, said he was a relatively healthy person for the majority of his life, but he

has always had diabetes. He was always careful to go to his yearly physicals, but many of the doctors didn’t take the time to talk to him or talk about his hypertension.

“In today’s medicine, you are in and out. They don’t take the time to talk with you,” Tuohy said. “It just happened to be that one day I stumbled into a doctor that said, ‘Your kidney functions are depleted,’ and so I started listening to this doctor.”

Time to celebrate with a Slice of Shoreview

After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Slice of Shoreview festival is coming back this summer with three days of fun for all generations.

The festival is July 23-25 at Island Lake County Park, 3611 Victoria Street N., in Shoreview.

According to Jacci Krebsbach, board chair of the Slice of Shoreview committee, organizers are still looking for art vendors and need sponsors. She noted the registration deadline has been extended until July 1. “Ad-

mission is free, parking is free, and we have a lot of free activities. We rely on our sponsors to help pay for those,” she said.

“One of the things that sets us apart from other festivals is that we offer a free shuttle service,” she added.

People can park in the Deluxe Corporation parking lot and take the free shuttle to Island Lake County Park. The Edina Realty north suburban office in North Oaks is underwriting the cost of the shuttles and agents from the Pam and Ally Wilson team —Brad Pitlick, Perry and Helen Nelson —will be driving the shuttles all weekend long.

“That’s amazing, because

sometimes people don’t want to come to an event because it’s too far to walk. We don’t call it a senior shuttle, and there’s no tipping. It’s for anyone who wishes to use it,” Krebsbach said. “It’s really something that’s great for this event.”

There will be a carnival, petting zoo, food vendors and free activities for young people, including face painting and art activities.

Cities see fewer applicants for seasonal jobs

While MN has eased pandemic restrictions, many businesses are facing a shortage of workers. Cities are also having a hard time hiring seasonal help.

Centerville City Administrator Mark Statz said the city has experienced a shortage of people interested in positions this summer.

“We’d normally hire four every summer, but we’ve only had two applications so far,” Statz said, adding the city would normally receive around 10 applications for the positions, if not more.

He said the open positions are for general maintenance work, including lawn mowing, maintaining the sewer and water systems, and storm pond cleanup.

Statz said normally, college-aged people apply, but the applicant pool has been low this year.

“It’s hard to know exactly why. I don’t know if it’s a trickle-down effect from people being on unemployment. I know

our restaurants are struggling to hire people, too,” Statz said.

To attract more workers, Statz said the city has increased the pay to $13.40 an hour, the highest it’s ever paid.

Circle Pines has also felt the effects of a shortage of workers. City Administrator Patrick Antonen said, “It was a little bit of a struggle this year and took a little longer than normal, but we were able to fill all of our positions.”

Antonen said it took about a month longer than usual to get applications in and conduct interviews.

“The job market right now is competitive for the folks looking to hire,” Antonen explained.

Antonen said he talked to the owner of the local McDonalds, who admitted they are struggling to find employees as well.

“You drive around our city, and you see help wanted signs virtually everywhere,” Antonen said.

Antonen didn’t want to speculate, but he thinks there are many reasons as to why the shortage exists.

Some cities in the region have had better luck than others.

Hugo City Administrator Bryan Bear said, “I’ve been hearing it’s an issue, but we haven’t had that issue, fortunately.”

Hugo has had almost all of its seasonal employees return from last year. “Our hope is to find seasonal (employees) who can work more than one season,” he said.

Bear said it’s usually a combination of college-aged people and retired individuals who apply for the six seasonal positions in the city’s Public Works Department.

“It could be just good timing for us, but we’ve had a good response of people returning from last year,” Bear said. The city of Hugo did not have to increase its seasonal pay or make any other changes to the positions.

White Bear Lake Assistant City Manager Rick Juba said it’s been business as usual for the city, and the city has met its hiring goals for seasonal staff.

“Overall, our number of applicants was down, but we were able to fill the spots that we typically fill in a summertime,” Juba said.

Juba said they filled around 10 positions, but still need to fill one horticulture assistant position.

“I know it’s been hard for other cities, but it’s seemed to work out fairly well for us this year,” Juba said.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself.

A. My husband and I live in Vadnais Heights. We moved here from Isanti County, where we raised our three sons. We’re city people, so are thankful we could move back to the metro and be closer to our eight grandkids.

Q. Is “Trailer Baby” the first book you’ve written?

A. It’s my first novel. I wrote a couple of books that are used in schools to help children and teens manage their emotions. They teach children through stories how to identify and do something about bad feelings.

I guess that was practice for writing my novel, but writing the novel was much harder.

Q. Provide an overview of the main characters and plot.

A. Dr. Cary Taylor, a married psychologist in her 40s, is burned out with her job. Making things worse for her, she can’t seem to get any respect at home, particularly from her 15-year-old daughter Cessna. Cary’s newest client, Lily Ganser, is a welfare mom from a trailer park. Cary isn’t as prejudiced toward folks from the trailer park as her husband Ben is, but she doesn’t totally disagree with him, either. Then the bombshell drops when Cary learns that Cessna is pregnant, and the father is Jeremy, Lily Ganser’s son. The story is told from two points of view: Cary’s and Lily’s, and how everyone affected negotiates the changes in their lives.

Q. Are any of your life experiences reflected in the story or characters?

A. My work as a therapist allowed me to know many,

Q. What was the inspiration to write?

A. During my years as a psychologist working with families, I learned that everyone has an important story to tell. If you listen carefully enough, their story explains why people do what they do. And I learned that even in the most dire circumstances, there is always hope for change. I guess I wouldn’t have worked in mental health for so long if I didn’t believe that. So, I wanted to write a story that didn’t shy away from the truth but also gives hope that people can change from old and harmful behaviors and find peace.

A. We can accept people different from us if we listen hard enough to understand their life stories and that every one of us deserves grace.

A. I’ve been a longtime fan of Alexander McCall Smith, and recently have been reading Kate Quinn books. I like Jodi Picoult and Krista Tippett.

Q. Do you have any plans for future works?

A. I have a children’s book in the works, and some ideas swirling around in my head about another novel. I love connecting with readers and have enjoyed being a resource for book club discussions.

Lake McCarrons beach closed The swimming beach at Lake McCarrons County Park in Roseville is closed and unguarded as of June 2. Routine testing for E. coli revealed that levels are above the recommended water quality standards.

School’s out

hroughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, the last week is here or near to put a close to one heck of an unusual school year. What does this mean? It means fewer buses on our neighborhood streets and more kids out riding bikes, rollerblading and skateboarding. Kids are heading to golf courses, baseball diamonds, lakes and beaches. You’re likely to see them off to their fi rst jobs mowing lawns, babysitting, dog walking, doing yard work, coaching, refereeing games, delivering newspapers and even volunteering. As you pour your morning cup of coffee or blend a protein shake, start visualizing where kids could be on your drive to work. Think about where they might be crossing streets. Also be aware that there are more high schoolers on the roads driving to jobs and various activities. Please - as you get into your car take extra care and give them a break. Consider leaving early to allow time to your drive. As always, don’t look at texts when you’re behind the wheel. As we settle into summer, stay alert, take it slow, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the season.

Skateboarding is not a crime I enjoyed skateboarding as a Publisher’s kid and love to see the variety of View skateboards now– from custom long boards, park boards Carter Johnson hand-built and mini banana boards to electric boards and one-wheels. I recently ran into a group of skateboarders downtown and asked them if they could do an ollie kick flip. They all quickly performed the trick at a variety of levels.

At my skateboarding peak this trick was the one I always wanted to perfect. They told me afterward they assumed I stopped because I was going to yell at them like everybody else does. They have taken the brunt and been given a bad name because of the few skateboarders who have misbehaved or damaged property in the past. I urge adults in our community to consider a different approach. Ask questions, listen and learn. It has been said kids will reciprocate the respect you show them. If this is true, we need change our approach. Compliment them, show them respect, and set an example for them about being kind. Treat them as you would like to be treated, or how you hope your children and grandchildren would be treated.

Give them the benefit of the doubt and don’t assume they are all out causing trouble.

This generation of kids hasn’t had to walk to school uphill both ways two miles in the snow, but they have a different set of challenges to navigate. The internet and social media is the wild west and anything can be said with little to no guidelines, laws or monitoring.

I remember hearing a speaker on the topic who once said to make comments online like you’re talking to your grandmother. We all need a positive support network regardless of our age.

Local inventions Some say America was built in the garage. When we look at local companies that were founded out of a garage or closets. Big companies like Microsoft, Apple and Gateway come to mind. Companies like Fulton Beer, Hed Cycle and Infinite Campus come to mind locally. A few years ago, we did a story about the patents that had been issued throughout our communities.

In Birchwood, Dellwood, Mahtomedi, North Oaks and surrounding areas, the number was impressive.

Over the years the paper has covered most of these new businesses and inventions. New businesses create jobs and build our local economy. They provide a tax base which supports our infrastructure along with fun projects and social services. Without a new influx of small business and startups we can’t provide services at the same level. So let’s encourage local entrepreneurship – support the businesses out there providing jet ski food delivery, junk removal, lawn services, healthy popsicles, homemade beauty products and Bloody Mary’s. Let’s help keep the best and brightest here in our community by supporting them.

Shine brightly into the future The following is the commencement address from Senior Class Officer, Christopher Wikstrom, during the Mounds View High School graduation ceremony June 8.

G

ood evening class of 2021, today is an exciting day. Despite the world being plagued with many challenges, we still managed to graduate. So let’s give ourselves a big round of applause.

We are indubitably the finest graduating class that Mounds View has ever had to offer. For those who don’t know me, hi I’m Christopher, we went to high school together.

Before I continue any further, I would like to give out some welldeserved thank yous to people that have greatly contributed to our high school Movers & education.

Principal Shakers Bruggers, Superintendent Christopher Lennox, Board Wikstrom members DeMay and Westerman, and all other administrators, thank you for making the tough decisions that have kept our school running safely and effectively, especially throughout this pandemic.

Thank you to all of our teachers and educators, for transcending us from small, prepubescent freshmen to young men and women. In this thank you to the teachers I feel obligated to apologize on behalf of the graduating class for leaving

you alone with the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. It is a real burden and I’m truly sorry.

Lastly, I would like to thank our parents, guardians, and family members for supporting us throughout this time. I’d personally like to thank my parents, and although I have known since September that I would speak at tonight’s commencement ceremony.

I may have forgotten to tell my parents that I was, and, well, it’s better late than never… so mom and dad, I will be speaking at tonight’s commencement ceremony.

Since high school began, we have supported our football team through the “epic highs and lows of high school football”; and at those football games, we have sung “Sweet Caroline” a few too many times. We have been booed by upperclassmen as we chanted our class cheer and subsequently we have booed underclassmen as they chanted theirs. We have grown from those prepubescent freshmen to the fine men and women seated in front of me today.

We have all experienced reflect days and been blessed with those many snow days, and for a select few of us physics students, we have been righteously given pancake days, shoutout to Mr. Hairrell. We have developed our passions and wrote about those same passions in our college essays. We have overcome challenges that presented themselves to us, the biggest being the covid-19 pandemic.

However, there are rewards in overcoming these challenges.

For one, the pandemic gives us a childhood story that outshines our parents’ “walk uphill both

ways” stories.

More importantly, these challenges also provided us with very important life lessons. The type of lessons that cannot be learned through teachings, but only through experiences.

For me, I have learned that we are all rightful stars in the universe.

But I also learned in order to claim your spot in the night sky, you have to shine brighter than the others.

So how do you shine? Well, like many things in outer space, that’s relative. You could shine brightly like Eric Feng, who partakes in extensive biology research, or like my fellow speaker Ella Jones, who is pursuing her private pilots license, or you can shine like Owen Pfeilsticker, who is bravely enlisting in the United States Marines to serve our great nation.

What makes each of us shine is our ability to radiate energy: our ability to radiate our kindness and passions. So if you want to shine brightly and claim your spot in the night sky, share your passions and share your kindness.

Commencement ceremonies are often misconstrued.

Commencement is not a celebration of an end, rather it is a celebration of a new beginning. While our high school education officially comes to an end tonight, our learning and pursuit of our passions do not.

So as we each work toward claiming our spot in the night sky: continue to learn, continue to chase your passions, and never stop radiating kindness. Thank you.

FATHER’S DAY BRIEF Seeking fatherly advice

Dr. Joy Lee Davis Dr. Joy Lee Davis, 90, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully, on Thursday, May 27, 2021, from injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, professor and friend. Joy touched thousands of lives through her decades-long career as a college professor and through her very active social life.

Joy is survived by her son William King of Incline Village, Nevada, her son Russell King and his wife Andrea Sather King of North Oaks, by her three grandsons Kyle, Ryan and Michael King and 5 nieces: Gail, Wendy, Sharon, Lauren and Cindy Wood.

She is preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Wood and sister in law Bobbi Wood of Atlanta Georgia and her first husband Peter J. King. She is also preceded in death by the love of her life John B. Davis, Jr., whom she now joins in eternity!

Services were held at the House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Avenue, St. Paul on Thursday, June 3rd.

Born in the Bronx New York in 1931, she moved around with her family, always reveling in the adventures of the day and establishing a work ethic that was second to none. She always had a thirst for knowledge, education, and literature. She received her Bachelors, and Masters Degrees from Wellesley College and her PHD from Rutgers University. In addition, Joy has published 4 books; a personal memoir, and 3 thought provoking, and playfully analytical publications on Jane Austen and Billy Collins works.

While not particularly athletic by her own admission, Joy enjoyed playing tennis into her 80’s. She even won the North Oaks ladies “A” singles title against immeasurable odds! Later in life she began playing more and more bridge and used her immense vocabulary to take up scrabble. Although her desire to play the perfect word often inhibited her ability to win.

She felt blessed to have the honor, and immense pleasure of teaching English and Literature at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware Oh, Hamline University and St Thomas College (both in St. Paul Mn). As a College Professor she adopted every student in every class she ever taught, beginning with her practice of

memorizing the names of each student on the first day of class! Most semesters culminated with her having her students to her house for end of semester parties, solidifying the family aspect of her classes and cementing long term relationships.

As a Mother, she was always the supportive parent, attending all of her kids’ athletic events and making sure they were kind, caring, gentlemanly and diligent.

She always knew how to provide just enough guidance to ensure that “her” kids would never be “those” kids.

She instilled in her boys the work ethic that would guide their success to this day. She always immersed herself in whatever her boys and their families were up to.

The second chapter of her life began with the meeting of Dr. John B. Davis, Jr. Their instant chemistry, and common passions for education catapulted Joy and John into a high school like romance that lasted 25 years until John’s passing in 2011. They would read together, laugh together, cavort around, and leave love notes for each other taped on the bathroom mirror or strewn about the floor! He also gave her great inspiration to write her own Poetry and even publish her memoir “Everything But” that she dedicated to John.

This reinvigoration, and intellectual support, spurred Joy into a wonderful, and endless second career of seminars and adult education classes. Her boundless knowledge of historical literature ran from Shakespeare to Jane Austen, to Billy Collins.

Joy brought unbridled enthusiasm to every class and began to look at literature in a way that refreshed the thinking on these historical works. She loved having audiences that were already excited about the authors she presented on. Her creativity was truly tapped, as she brought these new perspectives to life in front of her attendees. Seeing a literature seminar buzzing with thought brought even more Joy to her heart.

She began doing seminars at Waverly Gardens in White Bear Lake where many of her former North Oaks Neighbors were taking up residence. She loved the camaraderie so much that she put herself on the waiting list to get in without telling her boys. Independent to the end, she had her own apartment, cherishing her time there and her ability to have friends in for lunches and happy hours, which she did frequently!

Richard Anthony Moga, age 85 of Shoreview died May 22, 2021 surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nic and Christine Moga; siblings, Mary, Daniel and Michael. He is survived by his wife, Nerie; children, Jennifer (Paul) Kehler, Chelsea, Sherman and Tony (Jeysa); grandchildren, Jackson, Thomas, Matthew, Lily and Ellie; brother David (Daisy).

Dick grew up on Turtle Lake in Shoreview and loved the outdoors. Educated as an engineer, he took that skill set into his own business, Moga Tree Service. Dick was a kind and gentle man who gave of his time and treasure to help others.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce reported the following incidents:

Shoreview • A catalytic converter was reported stolen sometime overnight May 16-17 from a Toyota Prius parked in the 4200 block of Highland Drive.

• Another catalytic converter was reported stolen sometime overnight May 16-17 from a Honda Element parked in the 3200 block of West Owasso Blvd.

• A resident in the 700 block of Tanglewood Drive on May 17 reported being harassed by an ex. A Keep Our Kops Safe (KOPS) alert has been issued.

• A resident in the 300 block of Oakwood Drive on May 19 reported unauthorized use of her credit card for online purchases after she was notified by her credit card company of possible fraud. The card was still in the victim’s possession when it was used.

• A North Oaks woman reported her motor vehicle stolen May 20 while it was parked at the Shoreview Community Center in the 4500 block of Victoria Street N. Thieves took her possessions, including her vehicle keys, from an unlocked locker while she was swimming. Deputies entered the vehicle into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and issued a KOPS alert. The vehicle was recovered by the Columbia Heights Police Department on May 24, unoccupied with no keys.

• A rear license plate was reported stolen May 20 from a Toyota Corolla as it was parked in the 300 block of Oakwood Drive.

Deputies advised the victim to remove the remaining plate, and entered the vehicle’s identification number into the NCIC. • A White Bear Lake woman reported the catalytic converter from her Mitsubishi Outlander Sport stolen May 20 while it was parked in an employee lot in the 3400 block of Lexington Avenue N. during the day.

• Residents in the 5500 block of Alameda Street reported a burglary May 21 after an unknown person entered their home and walked away with the owner’s purse and wallet while they were across the street talking to neighbors for an hour. Thus far, there has been no unauthorized activity on their credit cards.

• A St. Paul woman, 51, and a Cottage Grove man, 55, were arrested May 22 at the Shoreview Target in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. for shoplifting after deputies received a suspicious activity report. Target employees observed the subjects pushing a cart full of unpaid merchandise out of the store. On arrival, deputies located a female putting merchandise into a vehicle, which was revealed to have been stolen out of St. Paul. The male was located later at a neighboring business in possession of unpaid merchandise from that store. The case has been forwarded to the county attorney’s office for consideration of charges.

• An employee of FreedomValu Center in the 5900 block of Hodgson Road reported being robbed at gunpoint at 9:22 p.m. May 22 by a male, 35, weighing 240 pounds and clad in jeans, a blue hoodie and blue medical face mask. Photos of the suspect identified him as being included in a multicounty crime alert. After the suspect received a bag full of money, he fled on foot. The case is under investigation.

• A resident in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road reported criminal damage to property at 8:34 p.m. May 23.

• A resident in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue at 4:32 p.m. May 24 reported fraud.

• A woman reported setting her cell phone down near the fi shing dock at Island Lake Park at 6:33 p.m. May 24 and later discovering that someone had stolen it while she was fi shing.

• An unidentified Shoreview male was arrested at 2:49 p.m. May 25 at the Gas Plus 16 in Vadnais Heights for violating an active Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO), after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a disorderly conduct report involving a male and female and discovered the male was in violation of the DANCO by being with the female.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen at 6:00 p.m. May 26 from the 100 block of Grass Lake Place.

• An assault report was taken at 6:17 p.m. May 26 in the 5600 block of Snelling Avenue.

• Deputies recovered an unidentified item of property in the 900 block of Robinhood Place at 6:34 p.m. May 26.

• Theft was reported at 4:20 a.m. May 27 in the 5900 block of Hodgson Road. A total of three thefts were reported in Shoreview during the week of May 23-29.

• A Minneapolis man was arrested at 6:06 p.m. May 27 at the intersection of Lexington Avenue N. and I-694 for violating a DANCO. • Fraud was reported at 12:00 p.m. May 28 in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. Deputies took two fraud reports during the week of May 23-29.

• An unidentified individual was arrested on warrant at 2:29 p.m.

May 28 in the 400 block of Cardigan Road.

• A suspicious person was reported at 7:25 a.m. May 29 for looking under a Toyota Prius in the 5500 block of Aldine Street.

• An Order For Protection (OFP) violation was reported at 10:36 a.m. May 29 in the 500 block of Harriet Avenue.

Catalytic converters a target for thieves

Catalytic converter theft is on the rise in Ramsey County, the metro area and nationwide.

A catalytic converter is an EPA exhaust emission control device that reduces toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine by converting them to less-toxic pollutants. Catalytic converters are typically found beneath the vehicle as part of the exhaust system.

Thieves target catalytic converters because they contain precious metals like platinum, palladium or rhodium that are valuable to metal dealers.

They can steal one off a vehicle in as little as two minutes, according to Cdr. Phil Baebenroth from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.

Thieves can sell them to scrap yards for $50 to $200, while it can cost the victim $800 to $5,000 to replace, depending on their insurance coverage.

Targeted vehicles include the Toyota Prius, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, all types of Hondas, and trucks or sports utility vehicles with higher ground clearance.

Most catalytic converters do not have serial numbers, making it difficult for law enforcement to prove a catalytic converter is stolen. This lack of identification makes it difficult to identify victims and successfully apprehend and prosecute criminals, according to Baebenroth.

The following are tips from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce to help deter and prevent catalytic converter theft: • Park in your garage or in an enclosed, secured parking area. If you park your vehicle in the driveway, use motion detector lights or continuous lights that illuminate your driveway.

• Always park in well-lighted areas.

• Purchase a vehicle security system and make sure it is set to trigger with just the slightest motion.

• Visit a local muffler shop and have the converter secured to the vehicle’s frame with a couple of pieces of hardened steel welded to the frame.

From Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce • Engrave your license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN) on the converter to make it traceable.

• Paint your converter using a high-temperature fluorescent orange or bright paint and then inscribe your VIN on the painted surface.

• Educate your friends and neighbors about catalytic converter theft.

• Check out the different types of catalytic converter theft deterrent systems at your local auto parts stores or online.

• When you see suspicious activity, call law enforcement right away. If you see a suspicious person under a vehicle, chances are they are attempting to steal the catalytic converter.

“The theft of catalytic converters is an on-going problem in communities throughout the country, including our own in Ramsey County. We are actively working to prevent people from becoming victims of this costly crime,” Baebenroth stated. “We also need the assistance of state legislators, county attorneys, and auto manufacturers to reduce this item from being targeted and to hold offenders accountable.”

“The main drive for me to get involved in tobacco prevention,” Anna Grace said, “is that some members of my family have addiction issues.

I saw how addiction drags people down and damages their lives, their livelihood and also the people around them. “I thought that getting involved with tobacco prevention would be a way to share my passion of tobacco prevention and keep people from doing that.”

Her advocacy caught the attention of the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, who recognized her as a national youth ambassador. She became involved locally with the Association for Non-Smokers.

Anna Grace’s activism doesn’t end with tobacco prevention. She also is involved with climate justice and organizes at the local and state level.

“When I was in eighth grade, I realized the dire need to act on climate change and how our world is slowly but surely diminishing and withering away because of how we treat it,” she said. “That’s how I got engaged in climate justice organizing.”

She trains middle and high school students on different policies and how they can get involved at the local and state level. She also provides them with resources.

“Through these things, I’ve gotten to make incredible connections and meet prominent politicians and work on other campaigns and help lead other youth across the country working in their own cities on tobacco prevention and climate policies,” Anna Grace said. “It’s been super fun. A big part of what keeps me going is meet-

ing people from all over the country.”

This activism earned Anna Grace a 30 under 30 Change Makers Award from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools this year. The award honors 30 exceptional young leaders who are connected in some way to charter schools and use their ideas, talents, and platforms to advance educational and economic opportunity and promote equality and social justice.

Anna Grace is humbled by the recognition and said it isn’t always easy dealing with issues that can be controversial. Kathryn says her daughter has had to deal with people posting negative comments online regarding her activism.

“She has had adults on her social media say incredibly impolite rude and insensitive things. It’s really horrifying, and it appalls me to no end that adults would speak with the youth that way,” Kathryn said.

“There have been times where it’s been really heavy for her as a young person, but she marches forward because she says, ‘This is what I am doing.’ She has an inner compass about what is right, what she believes, and she just manages it. I find that admirable about her — and a little mysterious.”

Kathryn recalled a time when Anna Grace was at Chippewa Middle School on the cross-country team.

“She has a deep compassion for running and (for) people. In her second race, she intentionally finished last in order to stay with a friend who has some serious disabilities and always hated finishing in last place. During the last 100 yards, Anna Grace intentionally slowed down so her friend wouldn’t finish in last place. The next

meet, Kathryn told Anna Grace that she would run with her friend, and Anna Grace won that meet,” Kathryn said. “She is very competitive, but she is also very compassionate.”

Kathryn said she worried about Anna Grace missing out on things during her teenage years because she was out trying to change the world, but realized that’s just who she is.

After graduating from high school in May from EdVisions Off Campus, a charter school in St. Paul, Anna Grace is spending her summer in Gat-

linburg, Tennessee, leading zipline tours in the Great Smoky Mountains.

“I just love the outdoors,” she said.

In the fall, she is heading to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to attend St. John’s College to study the history of math, science and philosophy.

“My dream job is to be a public health lawyer and policy researcher, someone who researches and writes policy around public health,” Anna Grace said. “I hope the future will be fun and will include something outside.”

Waiting Child Jonathan,15, has a contagious smile and a great sense of humor. He enjoys adult attention and is loyal to those he is close with. He can be very helpful especially when it comes to hands-on activities. He does well when he has a physical task to tackle, such as building something. Jonathan enjoys the outdoors where he can ride a four-wheeler, go biking and snowmobiling. His favorite activity is fishing! Jonathan also likes animals and helps his foster parents with daily chores on their small farm. Jonathan is learning about gardening this summer and has his own garden beds to tend to. He also likes playing basketball and football. When he’s not outside, he can be found playing video games or working on building something. He is a very handson learner and enjoys taking things apart as well as reconstructing things.

Also, there will be a fi reworks show on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Krebsbach noted that the Slice of Shoreview is an alcohol-free event, so there is no beer tent for fundraising, one of the reasons why the event is dependent on sponsors.

“Because it is an alcohol-free event, it’s a safe event. The Ramsey County Sheriff people love to work our event because it’s safe.

Multigenerations love to come, because they don’t mind staying until 10 or 11 o’clock at night for the fi reworks because they know it will be safe,” Krebsbach said. “If there were alcohol, we would lose the oldest and the youngest of the attendees, and you wouldn't have a ‘Slice of Shoreview’ with everybody represented.”

PIZZA MAN: ‘Dialysis is like a prison sentence’

that could have ever happened to me for two years,” he explained. For a while, his health problems seemed to subside. Tuohy was on a diabetes medication that was not conducive to his health, and is likely what led to his bladder cancer. A rather large tumor needed to be removed. Thankfully, the cancer has not returned.

“The kidneys were just this problem,” he said. “Being diabetic, you always want to watch your kidneys. They just slowly kept creating their own drama.”

In need of a kidney For the past year, Tuohy has been traveling to a center for dialysis three times each week. A dialysis session takes four hours and 15 minutes. He is currently in the process of looking into the option of home dialysis, which he said would give him “a tremendous amount of freedom.”

Even though dialysis has improved the function of his kidneys, Tuohy knows he can’t do this forever. “It’s not for me. It is not something that I foresee myself doing for years and years,” he said.

His goal is to educate people about the need for living kidney donors. He hopes that one day he will be lucky enough to receive a kidney.

So far, two potential donors have come forward, his daughter and a friend, but neither of them was a match.

“That was the most unbelievable thing a human being could do for someone. I couldn’t believe that there was a person like that out there,” Tuohy said.

Community man Tuohy, a Ham Lake resident, has made it his mission to support White Bear Lake and the surrounding communities.

“We have had a really good relationship with the community. I work hard to make sure the people we do business with know they are appreciated,” he said.

Over the years, Tuohy has been an avid supporter of local schools, law enforcement, theater, library and other small businesses.

White Bear Police Chief Julie Swanson explained that he has partnered with the department to provide pizzas for School Parent Safety Night as well as other events. He has also hosted Cones

with Cops every summer. “The event is such a great opportunity for the police to engage our community and local kids ... Having Farrell there to provide ice cream is an added bonus, because who doesn’t love ice cream?”

Swanson said.

“The White Bear Police Department has kept Farrell in our thoughts, and we are wishing for a positive outcome and continued strength.”

For now, Tuohy will remain on the waitlist, but he hopes he will find a living donor long before it is officially his turn.

ORGAN DONATION INFORMATION To donate a kidney, you must be in good physical and mental health.

As a general rule, you should be 18 years or older. You must also have normal kidney function. There are some medical conditions that could prevent you from being a living donor. These include having uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, HIV, hepatitis, or acute infections. Having a serious mental health condition that requires treatment may also prevent you from being a donor.

Directed donation is when the donor names a specific person who will receive the kidney. It is the most common type of living donation. Directed donations are often between blood relatives, like parents, siblings, or children. They can also occur between people with close personal relationships, such as a spouse, friend, or coworker. A nondirected donation is when the person does not name a specific person who will get the kidney. In this case, the donor is matched with someone in need.

MMCD: Surveillance key to mosquito control In Minnesota, few things are more synonymous with summer than mosquitoes. Fortunately, those in the seven-county Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) have been getting a break from those tiny pests for more than 60 years.

Since 1958, MMCD has been fine-tuning mosquito control in an area which now encompasses more than 3 million residents.

The days of spraying clouds of chemicals — which target adult mosquitoes— are a thing of the past here. Instead, control efforts are aimed at mosquito larvae in the ponds, ditches, swamps and other stagnant waters where they develop.

Each of more than 200,000 such sites in the district is classified by factors such as location, size, depth, duration of water retention and even the type of mosquitoes that breed there. Treatments are then tailored to site characteristics, rainfall and data collected by on-the-ground monitoring.

That data collection process is what Alex Carlson, MMCD public relations coordinator, refers to as “surveillance.” Mosquito control would probably grind to a halt

without it. “Surveillance is one of the first steps of our integrated pest management program,” he said.

What the public may not know is that surveillance takes multiple forms and is conducted nearly year-round. In the fall, MMCD field technicians survey in certain areas for larvae of one variety, the “cattail mosquito.” Their larvae overwinter, unlike most mosquito varieties. In spring and summer, technicians disperse almost daily in their familiar white and green trucks to retrieve samples of larvae. Also, throughout the summer they set traps and use nets to collect adult mosquitoes, canvassing for varieties known to transmit diseases to humans.

The larvicides used by MMCD are known as methoprene, spinosad, and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti). Carlson explains they are all compounds that interrupt the development between larval and adult stages and “don’t harm non-target insects, pets or humans.” In fact, spinosad and Bti are derived from naturally occurring bacteria. All are applied in dry, pelletized form and are relatively short-lived in the environment.

Carlson underscores how heavily environmental concerns weigh in the decision-making process: “The most common misper-

ception is probably how much research and data goes into every decision that MMCD makes. We consider a lot of factors before making a treatment, and choose the most environmentally friendly method to do it.”

Helicopters take to the skies in May to begin applying pellets to larger water-collecting basins. These products are designed to deliver insecticides quickly and have a rapid impact on developing larvae. Smaller sites are usually treated on foot by field technicians.

Additional applications occur over the course of the season as needed, which may be as often as every major rain event.

Results are generally good, according to Carlson: “[Treatments are] 80 to 100 percent effective, depending on the site.” He explains that since the MMCD encompasses such a large area, it can achieve better mosquito suppression by utilizing widespread larval control. This is in contrast to spraying for adult mosquitoes, which is more localized and doesn’t account for their ability to travel miles from their source.

But while modern mosquito control efforts may concentrate on the larval stages, that doesn’t mean they never use sprays.

will apply insecticides such as Permethrin via backpack sprayer in order to kill adult mosquitoes.

Varieties of particular concern are those that have the potential to transmit devastating diseases like LaCrosse encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis (fatal in 30% of cases), and West Nile virus. Carlson credits MMCD’s surveillance and control measures in part for the fact that Minnesota reported zero cases of West Nile in 2020.

In addition to rigorous mosquito control, the MMCD conducts monitoring of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Specifically, deer ticks and the locally rare Lone Star tick have the potential to spread a variety of diseases like babesiosis, Lyme disease, and ehrlichiosis.

MMCD also treats select rivers annually with Bti for biting gnats. Media attention has been focused recently on biting gnat concentrations in the south metro area, which Carlson describes as “no public health risk, really, just a nuisance.”

Before you take your dog out for a walk to the park anywhere this summer, be aware of potential parasites lurking to harm your four-legged friend.

According to Angelica Dimock, Animal Humane Society's managing shelter veterinarian, ticks and fleas are the most prevalent external parasites affecting dogs in Minnesota. Available medications include a topical liquid to be applied to their skin, oral medication once a month or once every three months, and flea and tick collars.

“There are some really good flea and tick collars now, not like the old-fashioned kind.

They may be a little bit more expensive, but they actually do work. In the old-fashioned collars, sometimes you can fi nd fleas living underneath the collars,” Dimock said.

Fleas can cause severe skin issues, anemia, weight loss and a poor quality of life for your dog.

Heartworm disease can be fatal and can cause heart failure. This very common internal parasite requires medication, and dogs should be administered a monthly dose. Also, heartworm medication can take care of other internal parasites.

“It's a general dewormer, but there are a couple of additional worms that are not covered through that general dewormer, like tapeworm,” Dimock said. Tapeworm is commonly spread by fleas. “If a flea has a tapeworm egg inside of it and the dog bites the flea and ingests it, they can get a tapeworm and separate medication is needed,” she added.

The most common symptom of a tapeworm is an itchy anus. If it's not treated right away, the dog can experience weight loss, diarrhea and vomiting. “You can see the little segments of dried-up tapeworm near the dog's anus, where the dogs sleeps, or even on their bedding. It looks like little grains of rice,” Dimock said. The easiest way to prevent tapeworms is to use a flea and tick preventative.

Ticks can cause tick-borne diseases including ehrlichia, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease, which is the most common here in Minnesota.

“Lyme disease can cause kidney issues

and get into the brain and cause memory issues,” Dimock said. “Clotting disorders can cause dogs to bleed with any kind of injury. That can make them really lethargic, and eventually could be detrimental to their health.”

Dimock noted that because of the nice weather and dogs now being outside, people should make sure their dogs are up to date on their vaccines. Core vaccines are rabies and distemper, but there are some additional vaccines that are beneficial, like the kennel cough — or bordetella — vaccine.

“These should be given to any dogs who go to dog parks a lot. Kennel cough is an infectious airborne disease. So, if a lot of dogs are panting and breathing close to each other, it can spread pretty quickly,” Dimock said. “Kennel cough is a really annoying cough and, in most cases, it is self-limiting, but there are cases where it can develop into pneumonia. You don't really want to mess around with it when there's a really good vaccine.”

There is also a Lyme and leptospirosis vaccine. It doesn't prevent the infection, but just lessens the clinical signs of Lyme disease. “It's one for dogs who go to parks, on hikes, or to the cabin a lot,” she said.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria that spreads through urine from wild animals. For example, if a dog has any contact with a place where wildlife would urinate, like stagnant water (a pond) or a backyard, there could potentially be leptospirosis in the area.

“If you get a lot of squirrels or deer walking in your yard, your dog could become infected,” Dimock said. “If a dog gets lepto, it could cause liver and kidney failure and can be fatal if it's not caught right away. It's an easy one to prevent for those dogs who are at risk. Keeping your dog vaccinated and using preventive measures can keep your dog healthy all year round.”

As if a pandemic, wildfires, locusts, and a rocket falling to Earth aren’t enough to worry about, now we are being invaded by jumping worms. And there is nothing funny about jumping worms. Their name comes from their tendency to jump around when disturbed, and they display a single, wide, almost white ring around their body. They thrive in leaf cover and in the top couple of inches of soil and can weather our winters underground as tiny cocoons. Where they live is what they destroy, and there is no known remedy to an infestation.

They grow larger than our normal earthworms and live in concentrated groups. These packs of worms live in the top six inches of the soil and work through the soil relentlessly until it resembles coffee grounds.

According to The Atlantic magazine, “[t]he disturbed soil erodes easily, dries out quickly, and generally makes poor habitat for many plants.”

This terrestrial invasive (MN Department of Natural Resources) has been located in North Oaks and throughout the Twin Cities metro area, the UMN St. Paul Campus, and in half of the woodlands at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Preventing their spread is the only way to manage this invasive pest. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends that if you share home grown perennials this year, the bare-root method is advised.

Completely submerge the plant in water to wash away the soil, any worms and cocoons. Repot the plants with sanitized, bagged potting soil. This Spring be vigilant to keep these destructive pests at bay, and only buy plants, dirt, and mulch from reputable dealers.

Mustangs are conference boys track champs

Scoring steadily in 17 of 18 events, the Mounds View boys track team captured the Suburban East Conference championship last week.

The Mustangs had gold medals in three events as they outscored runner-up 211 to 190 in the 10-team meet Tuesday and Thursday at White Bear Lake.

They had placed eighth in the state true-team meet a week earlier.

“We decided this year to focus more on the conference,” coach Ross Fleming said. “We don’t have the depth you need for true-team. We are more top-loaded this year. We had a really good meet. We beat Stillwater by 20, even though we left about 20 points on the field.”

3:24.36. They took third in the 4x800 with Ellis Malone, Max Derosier, Miller and Otto Coleman (8:12.54) and third in the 4x200 with Sam Magnuson, Max Gregory, Scott, and Lelinga (1:32.00).

The only event they were blanked was the 4x100, where they dropped a

handoff.

Sprinter Michael Scott took second in 100 (11.44) and fourth in the 200 (23.14).

Hurdler Ben Howlett took third in both the 110 (15.49) and 300 (41.19). Jumper Elijah Anderson took third in the triple (47-4) and fi fth in the long (20-10 1/4).

Thor Berthaume was second in pole vault (12-6), Magnuson fi fth (11-6) and Jason Walker seventh (11-0).

Four Mustangs made fi nals in the 400. Lelinga took second (50.83), Deroisier fi fth (51.54), Gregory sixth (51.96) and Eric Phennig-Wendt eighth (52.79).

How quickly our fortunes can change. Three week dry period followed by one week wet period. Last weekend's cold followed up this past weekend's heat. I gotta say our recent string of 90º temperatures really didn't feel that bad. One reason was that the dew point, how much water was in the air, was relatively low. A July or August heat wave we'll have dew points in the mid to upper 70's which are very uncomfortable. This past week our dew points were in the low and mid 50's and creeping into the low 60's. If you were able to find some shade, it felt nice to be outside and relaxing. Enjoy the earliest sunrises and latest sunsets times of the year.

Team falls short but Swenson, Alex brothers advance

Mounds View’s six-year dynasty as Section 4AA tennis champion ended with a 4-3 loss to Mahtomedi at home Friday, May 28.

The Mustangs, who were the reigning state team champions from 2019, will still be well-represented at state, by reigning state singles champion Bjorn Swenson, and the doubles team of Christo and Emmanuel Alex, as they captured section titles. Individual state competition will start June 10 at Prior Lake High School.

Mahtomedi (19-5) swept doubles in the upset of the top-seeded Mustangs (14-6).

Playing on their home courts, the Mustangs quickly took a 3-0 lead as Swenson and both Alex brothers breezed at 1-2-3 singles, winning 36 of 37 games.

But Mahtomedi would not

lose again. Dylan Pham got the last singles point, No. 4, and their doubles lineup did the rest. It was 3-3 when Mahtomedi’s David Azcona and Evin Sougstad pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Sidharth Sharma and Peter Culp.

Mustangs rumble into section baseball finals

Boys track: Mustangs place 8th in state true team Mounds View boys track placed eighth among 12 teams into state Class 3AA trueteam meet on Wednesday, May 26. Rosemount was the champion. The Mustangs won the 4x400 with Ben Wiggenhorn, Ellis Maloney, Max Derosier, and Will Skelly with 3:26.97, and placed second in the 4x800 with Otto Coleman, Maloney, Derosier, and McArthur in 8:14.25. Ben Howlett placed second in the 300 hurdles (41.20) and seventh in 110 hurdles (15.71). Michael Scott was fifth in 100 dash (11.14) and seventh in the 200 (22.72).

Matt Miller was third in the 3200 (9:30.43) with Elliott McArthur sixth (9:34.52). Will Skelly was fifth in the 1600 (4:18.65). Elijah Anderson was fourth in high jump (6-0) and eighth in long jump (20-2 1/2). Thor Berthaume took sixth in pole vault (12-6).

MOUNDS VIEW TRACK & FIELD Sangai Dukuly was Mounds View’s top scorer at the Suburban East Conference track meet last week. The senior sprinter placed second in the 200 dash (26.20 seconds), third in the 100 dash (12.77, after a 12.58 prelim), second in triple jump (35 feet, 4 3/4 inches), all personal bests, and ran the first leg of the winning 4x100 relay (50.12), leading the Mustangs to second place.

She will continue her career at Coe College in Iowa.

The Mounds View girls golf team placed fourth among 12 teams in the Section 5AAA tournament, ending the season. Maple Grove was champion with 754, followed by Roseville 700, Rogers 741 and Mounds View 754. The foursome made the cut after the first 18 holes in action Tuesday and Thursday on Links at Northfork in Ramsey. Kyra Chervany shot 91-94-195 and Erica Ganske 92-93-195, tying for 17th place to lead the Mustangs. Kaitlyn Isaacson shot 91-102-193, Alissa Zhao 100-95-195, Maya Arnold 96-102198 and Paige Landis 109-118-227.

The Mounds View girls, piling up points in sprints, throws and relays, placed runner-up in the Suburban East Conference last week.

The Mustangs snagged golds in two events on the way to 170 points, trailing only Roseville Area with 193, on Tuesday and Thursday at White Bear Lake.

Sangai Dukuly took second in the 200 dash (26.20), with fellow senior Kylie Stromquist fourth (26.60). In the 100 dash, they placed third (12.77) and fourth (13.15).

Dukuly also took second in triple jump (35-4 3/4) and led off a winning 4x100 relay with Camille Tran, Stromquist and Thia Olson-Skog (50.12).

The Mustangs also scored big in the 400 dash with junior high girls Magnolia Taylor third (1:00.91), Kate Roeber fourth (1:01.38) and Ivy Nystrom (1:02.14).

Hadley Streit won shot put with 38-6 and took second in discus (119-1). Four Mustangs reached finals in shot, and three placed. Josephine Gatto and Ainsley Arnold tied for sixth, each with 34-4.

Taylor Isabel ran fourth in the 1600 (5:20.14) and fifth in the 3200 (11:26.67).

Malaina Brodin placed eighth in both (5:36.59 and 1:57.50).

Hailey Nelson took fifth in 100 hurdles (17.21) and seventh in the 300 (50.98). Also scoring were Jaylyn Ahlberg, fourth, pole vault (10-6); Lizzy Rydberg, fifth, triple jump (34-9 1/4); Lauren Kath, sixth, 800 (2:23.58); Sophie Ohmann, sixth, high jump (4-8); and Stromquist, seventh, long jump (15-8 1/2).

In other relays, the 4x800 took third (9:57.13) with Roeber, Kath, Eva Barsness and Taylor; the 4x400 was fourth (4:06.51) with Roeber, Rydberg, Taylor and Kath; and the 4x200 fourth (1:56.56) with Rydberg,

Tran, Anuva Borgaokar and Nystrom.

After outscoring opponents 32-1 in three five-inning wins, the Mounds View baseball team is one win away from the state tournament.

The Mustangs (16-7) will have two chances to win once in the Section 5AAAA finals on Wednesday, with the first game slated for 6 p.m. in Osseo, and a second game to follow if needed.

Irondale (7-16), Spring Lake Park (9-12) and Roseville (11-12) are dueling for the finals slot.

The Mustangs beat Park Center 10-0 with Ben Rosin on the mound, striking out 11; then Spring Lake Park 10-0 on Ben Rosin’s one-hitter with seven strikeouts; then Roseville 12-1 with Will Rogers striking out seven, allowing two hits and a walk.
