Northeast Youth & Family Services offers hope during tough times BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER

Shoreview son making a difference miles away from home science and books, as well as a caring nature. “He was always reading,” JoAnn Goiffon, Reece’s mother said. “He also loved animals, and when our neighbors would go out of town, they asked Reece to take care of their pets. He was the neighborhood pet sitter.” Goiffon said he has a lot of fond memories of growing up in Shoreview. “I grew up near Turtle Lake and spent time fishing for sunfish and crappies with my older brother, Bennett. For anyone who is struggling with mental health issues, you are not alone. There is help out there. Northeast Youth and Family Services (NYFS) is one of those places. The community-based, trauma-informed, mental health and human services nonprofit organization has been serving the communities of suburban Ramsey County for 45 years. The nonprofit’s mission is creating a better tomorrow for youth, adults and families in our community. The organization offers three programs—Community Advocate Program, Senior Chore Program and Youth Diversion. “On the mental health side of things, we have two outpatient clinics—one in White Bear Lake and one in Shoreview. These are mental health services for all ages,” NYFS President and CEO Tara JebensSingh said. “We have partnerships

Dr. Reece Goiffon working in the COVID units with Dr. Nandini (Nina) Meyersohn. BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, Mounds View alumnus Dr. Reece Goiffon wasted no time dedicating his time during the crisis. He volunteered to be in the first wave of responders to staff the COVID floors at Massachusetts General Hospital back in March 2020. “I felt it was my personal duty and part of the oath I swore as a physician. At the time, Boston was right behind the New York metro area in terms of devastation to our communities,” he

said. “We physicians and other health care personnel struggled, and some of my colleagues still struggle with the fallout of the past year. We survived the wards through the kindness of strangers wanting to pay forward their gratitude to those on the front line. I want to share my gratitude to anyone who showed similar kindness back in Shoreview, even though I was personally half a continent away. Such gestures will be as memorable to me as 2020 itself.” While growing up in Shoreview in the 1990s, Reece always had a love of

Shoreview mother, daughter venture into the world of fitness When Shoreview resident Jen Klein retired after 30 years working for Minneapolis Public Schools, she needed a new niche. Around the same time, one of her four daughters, Lexi, had just graduated from Endicott College in Boston, where she played hockey and earned a business degree in marketing and management. “My youngest daughter,

Leah, was a track athlete at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi). She’s a shotputter and weightlifter who trained with Olympians, and she was experiencing sore muscles after long workouts. One of her coaches told her to try out a fitness place called HOTWORX. Leah thought it was crazy to go work out after she had already trained, but was told the sauna would help her muscles relax and recover,” Jen said. “She loved using HOTWORX’s workouts and asked me if she could

join. She would call me every night and tell me ‘Mom, you won’t believe this place! I feel so good.’” When Leah transferred to Montana State University, she missed HOTWORX, which prompted Jen and Lexi to explore franchising. Jen said they really wanted to open a HOTWORX studio in Shoreview, but there was no property available for the space they needed. The mother-daughter team bought three franchises — one in Woodbury, one in Bozeman,

Montana, and another studio in the Twin Cities. The Woodbury studio, located at 9020 Hudson Road in Woodbury (Woodbury Lakes), officially opened June 16. The studio has 10 saunas offering isometric workouts including hot yoga, hot Pilates, hot barre none and hot core, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts including hot row and hot blast. The workouts feature virtual instructors, SEE HOTWORX, PAGE 2
