July marks the fi rst official month on the job for Ross Allen, the sixth president of Bethel University.

Allen comes to Bethel from Azusa Pacific University, a private Christian university in California. He is no stranger to the Arden Hills school, however.

Both he and his wife, Annie, are Bethel graduates, classes of 1984 and 1986, respectively.

Allen said that his four years as a student at Bethel “really shaped meâ€? and will now inform his tenure as president. “As a student, you don’t really study the mission and what Bethel is about. You experience it,â€? he said. “So then to come back ‌ It’s so clear that Bethel did exactly what their objective is, which is to help you grow in your faith, live a life glorifying God and make an impact on your neighbor.â€?

An area couple wants its customers to know that living a sustainable lifestyle is easier and not as expensive as you might think.

Aimee Lancaster and her partner Amar Singh, formerly of Forest Lake, moved to Hugo around a year ago.

Three months later, on May 31, 2019 they launched a website for their company, Plastic Free Pursuit.

The two both have a background in computers and technology and work full time as care providers for a foster

care company in Hugo that serves adults with disabilities. Singh is originally from Mauritius but moved to the U.S. in April 2018. The two were inspired to live a more sustainable lifestyle after visiting his home country. “We saw that they had compostable bags in their supermarkets, (and) the beaches were super clean.

Everyone at the markets used cloth grocery bags and no one really used disposable cups there. It is a super different way of life and it opened our eyes,� Lancaster explained. “We just realized we need

Community newspaper readers also voters, survey says Community newspapers are the most trusted source of information about candidates running for public office, and community newspaper readers are more likely to be voters, according to a survey from the National Newspaper Association (NNA).

The survey polled more than 1,000 people from urban and rural communities across the country and found that 85% of community newspaper readers said they are “very likely” to vote in upcoming elections, compared to 73% of nonreaders. Likewise, 84% of community newspaper readers said that they voted in the last federal, state or local election.

Respondents also rated community newspapers as the most trusted source of information about candidates running for public office.

On a scale of 1-10 (with “1” meaning completely untrustworthy and “10” being completely trustworthy), community newspapers received an average of 5.77 overall and an average of 6.23 among readers, the highest of all other information mediums.

Ratings for other sources are as follows: • National network TV news – 5.13 • Cable TV news shows – 4.60 • Talk or satellite radio programs – 4.31 • Metropolitan newspapers that cover major cities and suburbs – 4.29 • Direct mailings from candidates and/or political parties – 3.73 • Facebook and/or Twitter – 2.92 “Overall, great news for local community newspapers,” said NNA Vice President Matt Adelman. “(The results) show Facebook and even direct mail have far less impact and readership than the political consultants insist, especially on the trustworthy scale where our newspapers rank about even with national news programs, but far ahead of the rest of the pack.”

The survey also found that 92% of community newspaper readers say that their local paper informs them and 64% said they share their paper with up to five other people. Of all survey respondents, 61% said that they turn to their local community newspaper for information about candidates running for public office.

Finding connection in isolation

W

hen Minnesota’s stay-at-home order went into effect, I worried that it would make me unbearably lonely. I live alone (aside from my 11-year-old cat), and my nearest immediate family members, my sister and my soon-to-be brotherin-law, live in Chicago—a full six-hour drive away. But now, over three months into the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve felt all the more connected to the people I love, as I’m talking to them much more often than normal.

It makes for a strange irony that I find both sweet and sad—how my friend in France has felt no further away than my friend who lives a mere few blocks away.

Although, of course, with the threat of COVID-19 still lingering and social distancing guidelines still in effect, that friend nearby doesn’t feel much closer.

Like many of us, I have been heavily relying on video calls to stay in touch with loved ones over the last three months. I typically hate calls that add video to audio, despite how much I love on the phone. I will decline Between talking FaceTime requests from family and only to call them back on the the Lines friends, phone seconds later. I have never been Elizabeth Callen able to pinpoint my reason for such calls, which are certainly a marvel of modern technology, but I sometimes think of a passage from “Infinite Jest,” in which David Foster Wallace writes, in 1996, of the rise and fall of “videotelephony.” In the novel, videotelephony enjoys a brief popularity that is suddenly cut short when users realize it forces them to actually pay attention to the person on the other end of the line.

“Videophone consumers seemed suddenly to realize that they’d been subject to an insidious but wholly marvelous delusion about conventional voice-only telephony. They’d never noticed it before, the delusion—it’s like it was so emotionally complex that it could be countenanced only in the context of its loss,” Wallace writes. “Good old traditional audio-only phone conversations allowed you to presume that the person on the other end was paying complete attention to you while also permitting you not to have to pay anything even close to complete attention to her.”

In the months since COVID-19 struck Minnesota, I have downloaded Zoom onto my laptop and used it at least weekly—to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday, to virtually wish my grandparents a happy 65th wedding anniversary and to catch up with my closest college friends, now scattered across the country. Wallace is right that videotelephony forces you to pay attention, or at least it takes away your ability to secretly multitask. If you try to trim your fingernails, compose a grocery list or stir something on the stove midZoom call, it becomes obvious that you are not paying attention to your conversation partner.

In these days of social distancing, when in-person gatherings have become a public health risk, I’ve been surprised by how fulfilling I’ve found FaceTime and Zoom calls, and how comforting it is to see the face of the person I am talking to in addition to hearing their voice. Having to look at them while they talk has made me pay better attention and listen more deeply.

Of course, these virtual conversations cannot compare to the experience of actually being with another person.

They sometimes feel like hollow substitutes for “the real thing,” and the longer the pandemic drags on, the more insufficient they seem. I miss spending Sunday mornings at church, being able to invite friends over for dinner and celebrating birthdays and anniversaries with my family in Michigan rather than staring at a screen while sitting in my living room. But someday, hopefully soon, the worst of the virus will be behind us and we can begin returning to these small but sacred rituals.

Quarantine has forced us to slow down our lives as we collectively try to slow the spread of coronavirus. When cases begin to fall and day-to-day life regains some semblance of normalcy, I hope that these realizations of how reflection and rest can enable connection. I am thankful that Zoom has helped me learn that.

Protecting our seniors during the pandemic

C

oronavirus has changed just about everything about our lives, but for our nation’s seniors, the toll of this virus has been particularly devastating. Those over 65 account for the vast majority of Americans who have died from coronavirus, with estimates indicating that 8 out of 10 people in our country who have lost their lives are seniors.

And this pandemic has put older Americans at risk on multiple fronts.

Necessary safety precautions have left many older Legislator Americans alone and separated Lingo from their loved Amy Klobuchar ones, and also vulnerable to scams by those seeking to exploit this crisis for personal gain.

All across the country, families have turned to creative solutions to stay connected to their older relatives while also keeping them safe.

Many nursing facilities have strict rules in place barring visitors in order to protect the health of their residents—which is critical given CDC estimates indicating up to 35% of coronavirus deaths have occurred in nursing homes.

In mid-June, Minnesotans got some good news when the Minnesota Department of Health issued new guidance that allows outdoor visits

Seniors are also often targeted by scammers seeking to exploit them for financial gain, using the fear and uncertainty created by this pandemic to take advantage of the most vulnerable.

That’s why Senator Jerry Moran from Kansas and I introduced bipartisan legislation last month—the Protecting Seniors from Emergency Scams Act— that directs the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report to Congress on scams targeting seniors during this pandemic and make recommendations on how to prevent them during emergencies.

The bill also directs the FTC to update its website with information that will help seniors and their caregivers get in touch with law enforcement and adult protective agencies, and directs the FTC to ensure seniors and their caregivers are informed about the risks of these fraudulent schemes. Even before the pandemic, seniors lost an estimated $3 billion annually from financial scams.

All Americans deserve safety and dignity in their senior years. The moral test of any nation is how it treats its most vulnerable citizens—and that has never been more important than right now during this crisis. We have a duty to not just protect the health of our nation’s seniors, but also their mental, emotional and financial well-being.

at nursing homes and assistedliving facilities. But we know that even with this updated guidance, many nursing home residents will still feel unsafe seeing visitors while others’ health remains too fragile to take the risk.

While protecting the people we love is critical, this reality means many seniors will still not be able to see their families or visit their health care providers.

That’s why I am leading bipartisan legislation in the Senate that would further enhance telehealth and other virtual services in skilled nursing facilities.

My bill would provide funding to expand the use of telehealth services, and help nursing facilities get technology to support “virtual visits” to help seniors stay connected to their loved ones.

AARP, the Long Term Care Community Coalition, the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care and the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations have all endorsed this bill. A bipartisan companion bill has also been introduced in the House of Representatives.

This legislation would help minimize the harmful mental and physical toll of being apart from loved ones while ensuring the care of older Americans is not compromised when their families can’t visit them.

While this bill would help mitigate some of the wide-ranging impacts of this pandemic on older Americans, this population is vulnerable to more than just the health implications of this virus.

Now, Allen wants to ensure that same mission reaches current and future generations of Bethel students.

“I’m anxious to give that back and make sure we continue to do those things,” he said.

Prior to his tenure as president of Azusa Pacific, Allen spent 25 years at Medtronic.

“Much of that was what’s classically called turnaround, so really stepping into organizations that needed to reassess where they’re going to get clear about what they’re trying to achieve and then rallying the organization around that,” he said. “I don’t like that term (turnaround) — because if you’re turning around, you’re going back to something that got you where you are, but stepping into an organization that some would call distressed … I actually did that seven times at Medtronic, and then Azusa Pacific was like that as well.”

Those skills and knowledge, Allen said, will help guide him throughout his new role at Bethel.

“I gained the experience of stepping in and assessing the organization, evaluating what is really core about it, and then assessing what’s working well and what areas it needs to double down on,” he said. “From a positive standpoint, what are areas that are holding the organization back from excelling and achieving its mission most effectively.”

The COVID-19 pandemic makes for an uncertain time for higher education institutions, and Allen said that Bethel, like many other colleges and universities, is under transformation. “It (the pandemic) certainly

accelerates some of the discussion about the transformation and innovation going on,” he said, adding that his predecessor, retired president Jay Barnes, has been instrumental in what could have otherwise been a rocky transition.

“Jay has been so, so gracious. He pulled me in early, actually. Because of COVID, I wrapped up my assignment (at Azusa Pacific), so I was able to be freed up, and Jay pulled me in, actually in mid-March, right when everything was starting.”

Although it is far from ideal, Allen said, having to hold meetings virtually comes with a few benefits.

“You can make a lot of introductions quickly, including with people who aren’t geographically close,” he explained. “I’ve done a lot of listening and have been able to begin to identify and articulate what we’ll focus on and what initiatives we’re going to take to help us move forward most effectively.”

Allen also said that the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic also provides significant opportunities, which he is eager to use to move Bethel forward.

“One of the things that I’ve seen about Bethel is just the great community, especially as a faith community. Both my wife and I have been surprised at how strong that community is, and what a great opportunity it is to step in and move the organization forward, especially in a time where community is so critical,” he said. “I’m really excited about that, and the organization seems ready. It’s a crazy time to step in, but I’m looking forward to that and building on the great traditions that Bethel has.”

Lakes not stocked this year, but holding strong, says DNR

Area lakes were not stocked with fish by Department of Natural Resources this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have plenty of fish, said a DNR official contacted by the Press.

“Most lakes will continue to sustain a quality fishery, providing ample angling opportunities,” said Harland Hiemstra, communication officer for the DNR’s Central-St. Paul region of Minnesota. He added that not stocking lakes this year should not significantly affect the future fish population.

“It’s one year of stocking that will be missed for walleyes and muskies.

The other self-sustaining species like bluegill, black crappies, bass and pike will not be affected at all.”

Sometimes a reduction of one kind of fish can be good for a lake anyway, he said, due to less competition for food.

Asked if area lakes are now being overfished, Hiemstra said that’s not the

case, but he noted that fish license sales are higher than the last two years — with fishing being one of the few safe sports activities during the pandemic.

“Being outside, while keeping safe distances, is the best place to be right now, and that means activities like golf, fishing, hiking are pretty popular this summer. Just need folks to follow our fishing regulations.”

Lakes are stocked according to an individual lake management plan that is guided by fish surveys completed by area offices. The higher-priority lakes are stocked, and the DNR keeps track of the effectiveness of the stockings.

“We adjust our stocking and individual lake management based on the surveys done. For example, White Bear Lake gets surveyed every two years because we stock it with walleyes and muskies … and because it’s one of our better overall fisheries in the East Metro.”

Rotary District 5960 named the Arden Hills Shoreview Rotary Club medium-sized Club of the Year for the 2019-20 year. The district includes about 70 Rotary clubs in the St. Paul area, southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

The club was also recognized as the Club of the Year in the International Service category for medium-sized clubs. The current international project of the Arden Hills Shoreview Rotary Club is the Pushpa Sewing School in the small indigenous village in Amaravathi, India. The Rotary Project provided funds to establish the sewing school and support initial operations while it becomes self-supporting. After six months of training, the young women will have opportunities for employment while they would otherwise be dependent on seasonal agricultural labor.

An international Rotary project in Nigeria for clean water, sanitation and hygiene in schools is being planned by the club. The new project will fund groundwater wells, pumps and the infrastructure and training for five rural schools in southern Nigeria.

Additional achievements include an increase in membership to 34 members; increased giving to the Rotary Foundation, and community partnerships with local nonprofit organizations and schools through volunteering and donations.

Some of the local groups with whom the Rotary Club partners are: Northeast Youth and Family Services, Salvation Army, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, Bridging, Solid Ground and Mounds View School District.

Recently, after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person meetings, the Rotary Club helped to form the Suburban Ramsey Emergency Coalition with other service clubs and community foundations.

The coalition has raised funds, awarded grants and performed volunteer work to assist neighbors affected by the pandemic.

The Arden Hills Shoreview Rotary Club ordinarily meets weekly at Flaherty’s Arden Bowl on Tuesday mornings. Due to COVID-19, meetings are being held on Zoom, with weekly speakers on local and regional issues. For more information, visit ardenhillsshoreviewrotary.org.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

• A 2008 Toyota was reported stolen at 3:46 a.m. June 14 from the 200 block of Jansa Drive after its owner left the keys inside. A neighbor witnessed two males enter the vehicle and drive off. A K-9 search for the vehicle was unsuccessful.

• A White Bear Lake woman on June 14 reported a passenger window broken while her vehicle was parked at Rice Creek Fields in the 5800 block of Rice Creek Parkway. The vehicle was not rummaged through, and no valuables were visible inside.

• A New Brighton man reported the rear license plate from his auto stolen June 14 as it was parked in the 3500 block of Owasso Street.

• A Tucson, Arizona, woman at 12:09 p.m. June 19 reported her wallet and phone stolen from her unlocked vehicle as it was parked in the 500 block of Gramsie Road while she walked the Snail Lake trails. A stolen credit card was subsequently used at a local business. A Shoreview woman at 12:44 p.m. that same day reported her wallet and phone stolen from her unlocked car as it was parked at the same location. One of her cards was also used fraudulently, but unsuccessfully. The suspect of both thefts was captured on store video in the second incident.

• Miscellaneous items were reported stolen overnight June 14-15 from a vehicle parked in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N.

• A resident in the 900 block of Island Lake Avenue on June 20 reported an envelope containing a check placed in her mailbox on June 16 had been stolen; the envelope was found later by a neighbor, minus the check. The check had not been cashed, however.

• A New Brighton male on June 15 reported his driver’s side window broken and a $10 gift card taken from the vehicle while it was parked on the street in the area of Rice Creek Parkway and County Road I.

• A St. Paul man, 37, was cited June 21 in the 5900 block of Hodgson Road for trespassing at the Freedom Valu Center following a disorderly conduct report.

• A 2003 Lexus was reported stolen overnight June 16-17 from the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. The vehicle has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

• A large knife kicked into a sewer at the intersection of County Road I and Rice Creek Parkway was reported found June 22 and placed into property.

• A man who thought he had locked his vehicle reported speakers, shoes, an XB1 controller and cash missing from it June 17 after it had been parked in the 4300 block of Victoria Street N. • A resident in the 600 block of White Birch Drive on June 17 reported unknown persons filing for unemployment benefits under his name.

• A Vadnais Heights woman reported her purse stolen from her vehicle June 17 as she was putting her shopping cart away at the Maplewood Cub Foods.

• Two cartons of cigarettes were reported stolen at 2:36 a.m. June 23 from the Exxon gas station in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. after the clerk placed them on the counter and looked for another requested item. The case is under investigation.

• A Stillwater woman reported her phone, wallet, keys and lunch box stolen June 23 from her locked workplace locker in the 500 block of Cardigan Road.

• A North Branch man and an Isle man reported construction items stolen from their truck parked at Emmet D. Williams Elementary School in the 900 block of County Road D June 26 after a screen on the vehicle’s topper was cut. A separate vehicle parked in that same lot that same morning had its front passenger window smashed and a diaper bag stolen.

• A Minneapolis woman in the 100 block of Oak Hill Drive reported theft by swindle June 26 following a successful phone scam claiming identity theft leading to charges in Texas, during which she was advised to “secure her money” with $2,000 in gift cards.

• A juvenile’s bike was reported stolen June 27 after he had parked it in a friend’s yard in the area of County Road J and West Royal Oaks Drive. When the youth went to ride the bike home, it was gone.

• A St. Paul man, 29, was arrested June 27 on I-694 and Lexington Avenue N. on an active domestic assault warrant following a traffic stop for driving misconduct. The subject was also cited for operating a vehicle without insurance.

• A cell phone and tablet were reported stolen June 28 following a burglary in the 200 block of Hanska Court while the complainant was out of town.

A Coon Rapids man with an extensive criminal record, including at least two felony convictions for fleeing police in a motor vehicle, faces that same charge again, following a June 21 burglary attempt.

Russell Wayne Melanson, 34, faces a prison sentence of up to three years and/or a $5,000 fine for felony fleeing a peace officer.

At 4:37 a.m. June 21, Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a break-in alarm at condominiums under construction in the 5000 block of Rice Creek Parkway. Two males had been seen G_fkfj inside the building on remote video.

• A Plymouth woman reported a purse containing a wallet and cell phone stolen from its hiding place under the front seat June 23 as the car was parked at the Grass Lake Nature Reserve in the 500 block of Gramsie Road while the she was on her walk.

The driver’s side window was smashed for access.

High speed chase wrong way on I-35 leads to charges

Body recovered in Maplewood pond Ramsey County Sheriff's deputies recovered a deceased adult male from a pond near the Ramsey County Maplewood Library, just south of 694 and Highway 61.

On July 2, a volunteer with the organization Wings of Hope Search and Rescue called 911 to report they may have found a body in the pond. Earlier in the week, June 30, Sheriff's deputies responded to the same location following a report that a person from the homeless camp near the library was struggling in the middle of the pond, went under the water and did not return to the surface.

Sheriff's deputies, Maplewood police officers and Maplewood fi refi ghters could not locate the man at the time due to murky water and dense weeds.

• A Ziploc bag containing handgun ammunition was reported found June 23 in a dumpster in the 3500 block of Owasso Street and placed into the property room at the sheriff’s office.

With prior experience at being chased by police, Melanson sped at more than 80 mph and went the wrong way on the ramp to I-35W while flashing lights and screaming sirens followed him. The pursuit lasted four miles and involved multiple squad cars. Melanson and his truck twice went the wrong way on Rice Creek Parkway, nearly causing a head on collision with another vehicle. The pick up's speed reached 100 mph before it eventually crashed over a guardrail at County Road H and I-35W. Melanson was transported to Regions Hospital with multiple injuries.

Gov. Tim Walz recently signed into law bipartisan legislation authored by Rep. Kelly Moller which would require all licensed teachers to receive mental health training. Currently only the most experienced teachers are required to receive mental health training upon renewal of their license. Moller's legislation expands the training requirement to all classroom teachers to help them more effectively understand key warning signs of mental illness, learn suicide prevention best practices and develop a more in-depth understanding of trauma.

RATE INCREASE NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR CENTERPOINT ENERGY MINNESOTA CUSTOMERS CenterPoint Energy has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) for permission to increase its natural gas rates for distribution service. The requested increase is for about 6.8 percent or $62.0 million per year.

The requested increase would add about $4.79 to a typical residential customer’s monthly bill.

The MPUC may either approve or deny the requested changes, in whole or in part, and may approve a lesser or greater increase than was requested for any class or classes of service.

The MPUC will likely make its decision on our rate request in the first quarter of 2021. If final rates are lower than interim (temporary) rates, we will refund customers the difference with interest. If final rates are higher than interim rates, we will not charge customers the difference.

If you move before a refund is issued and we cannot find you, your refund may be treated as abandoned property and sent to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Unclaimed Property Unit. On the website, customers can fi nd an extensive list of products for themselves, their kitchens, bathrooms, children, pets and more.

Their most popular item is shampoo and conditioner bars. “That’s the easiest thing and one of the fi rst things a lot of people switch to just because everyone is washing their hair. It is a no-brainer, you just use a bar versus a bottle,” Lancaster said.

One of the more unique items customers will fi nd is incense sticks, which often have a lot of bad chemicals to make pretty smells. The sticks contain essential oils, bamboo and are phthalate- and paraben-free.

Plastic Free Pursuit has customers all over the state, country and around the world, including Canada, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Australia. Most of the business is conducted online and shipped to customers.

“We ship plastic-free. We use cardboard boxes, craft paper mailers, paper tape (and) paper for cushioning, and our shipping label is recyclable and compostable,” Lancaster said.

Before COVID-19 hit, the two participated in pop-up events at area coffee shops and markets. They hope to do that again once the pandemic ends.

One day, they hope to open a storefront, but they are not sure about the location.

Lancaster and Singh recommend starting small when trying to convert to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Ramsey County beaches reopen

Most Ramsey County beaches are now open, but state and federal guidelines for use during the COVID-19 pandemic are in effect.

Lake Owasso County Park and Beach in Shoreview remains closed, due to ongoing construction.

There will be no lifeguard on duty at any of the county beaches; visitors should call 911 in the event of an emergency. Nearby restrooms are open as well, and facilities will be cleaned twice daily.

Ramsey County issued the following additional guidelines for beach use: • Children must be actively supervised by an adult at all times.

• Swim only in the designated buoyed area.

• Stay home if you are sick or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 such as a fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath.

• Avoid crowded areas. If the beach area is full, try visiting another location or plan to return another time.

• Keep your distance. Maintain at least six feet between yourself and others at all times.

• Wear a cloth mask when not in the water. Since beaches can be difficult places to maintain social distancing at all times, adults and children ages 2 and up are encouraged to wear a mask.

• Cover your sneeze or cough with a tissue or sleeve and not your hand.

• Wash or sanitize hands frequently.

• Bring water to stay hydrated. Drinking fountains remain off at all park locations.

“Every window in the building was rotten and I remember sitting there looking out those windows and thinking that should be a patio. But it wasn’t really,” he said. “It took a lot of work to create the feel and style that it is today.”

Live music during White Bear Lake’s Marketfest was added that summer, which started yet another tradition.

Kellerman said the history of the building is important to him. He made sure to incorporate it into the design of the two businesses. “The ages of the decor range quite a bit, spanning over the time that the building has been here.”

With their compilation of unique drink styles, Kellerman said he would describe the staff of The Alchemist as “artists.”

The bar added a small food menu to compliment the strength of the cocktails. “Without food, guests were intimidated to go to the next drink,” Kristin Cranmer, manager of Kellerman’s & The Alchemist said. “The addition of the food provides our guests a more satisfying experience.

The Kellerman’s Event Center’s slogan is “We Love History at Kellerman’s Event Center ... and we are making more every day!” The event center sticks to the slogan for every event from weddings to celebrations of life to corporation parties.

We also have accommodations for small gatherings like birthdays, groom’s dinners, team building tours and more.

The staff loves every event no matter the size. “We like to party with everyone,” Cranmer said.

Cranmer describes the Kellerman’s team as detail oriented and dedicated. “Each day our Kellerman’s XIEQ [SVOW XS ÁRI XYRI EPP SJ XLI HIXEMPW JSV IEGL client,” she said. “Taking all of our couples’ visions for their wedding day and translating that into reality.”

olling through downtown White Bear Lake on Highway 61 a handful of landmarks stand out. The clock tower, small shops, ice cream stands and restaurants.

Standing out among these is Preferred Kitchens, a 25year veteran on the corner of 2nd Street and Highway 61.

Preferred Kitchens was born in Fridley in 1985 said owner Mark Klosterman and after 10 years in business was looking for a new home closer to more of the clients with which they were working.

After an exhaustive search, White Bear Lake became the clear choice and with a leap of faith, made the jump.

The business was embraced by the community immediately and now approaching 35 years in business have stated that it’s been one of the best business decisions they could have made.

“One thing we found with the White Bear Lake community is there are multi-generational families here and people tend to stay here. I think it’s a very unique quality that speaks to the fact that this is a great place to live. We very much value being part of this kind of environment” Klosterman said.

After closing in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the waterpark at the Shoreview Community Center reopens to the public this week.

For now, the Tropics Indoor Waterpark will be open only to community center members. City Manager Terry Schwerm said eventually access will be expanded to the general public.

“However, the waterpark will have a limited capacity to achieve social distancing in compliance with state guidelines,” Schwerm added.

Capacity for the Tropics Indoor Waterpark is limited to 100 people, and to 75 people for Bamboo Bay, the section designated for children ages 10 and under. Masks are required in common areas,

including the locker room and pool deck, but are not required for swimming. Guests are responsible for maintaining social distancing while in the facility; a distance of six feet or more from other patrons is required.

Michelle Majkozak, Shoreview Community Center General Manager, said that the Tropics Indoor Waterpark will be open 12-3 p.m. and 4 -6:30 p.m.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Bamboo Bay will be open 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 1-3:30 p.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. Thursdays. The whirlpool will not be available during these hours.

Patrons should bring their own swim times and

come ready to swim, as access to lockers and storage cubbies will be limited, and the family locker rooms will be closed.

The Shoreview Community Center reopened to members last month but is operating at limited capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional safety measures are also in place to try to slow the spread of the virus, including plexiglass at the front desk, a mask and social distancing mandate in common areas and enhanced cleaning protocols.

The pool is open for lap swimming from 5 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. weekends. Reservations for lap swimming must be made online. Sessions are 30 minutes long, and only one person is permitted in a lane at a time. From 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., the pool is open to high-risk members only. The fitness center is limited to 50 people at a time, and the indoor track to three persons.

Q: Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

A: I grew up in White Bear Lake from the age of 4. My husband and I bought a house on the east side of St. Paul where I bought up my three children. I am now back in the home I grew up in.

A: My grandpa was a self-taught artist/ cartoonist and I drew with him as a child.

I took up painting at WB High School in Mr. Plauda’s art class.

He encouraged me to pursue art as a career.

I ended up graduating from the School of Associated Arts in St. Paul and spent 12 years as a theme designer for Taymark in White Bear. I put my art on the back burner for over 15 years but started painting in earnest in 2011.

Q: What is most challenging?

A: It took a long time deciding what I wanted to create before I realized I wanted to paint. Once I realized I wanted to paint, I had to think about what I really loved and paint that. Since I love animals and portraits, I started to paint my pets and my family and it progressed from there.

It has been difficult to market myself.

Q: Are you a full-time artist or do you have a day job?

A: I just started trying to market my work about two years ago, so I am at the beginning

Q: Do you have any goals or plans for the future in relation to your art?

A: I hope to be able to work part time in the near future and devote my time to painting.

Q: How about a final comment that sums up how you feel about what you do?

A: I am passionate about painting, but I also try to be disciplined.

When I was laid off for six weeks, I tried to spend eight hours a day painting and creating, challenging myself to make cards or do a painting every day.
