Resurfacing of County Road E between Centerville Road and Highway 61 through Vadnais Heights and Gem Lake is scheduled to begin the week of July 16.

The surface layer of the Ramsey County road will be removed and replaced with new pavement, according to the county.

Milling and paving is scheduled to take place overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Noises from trucks beeping and the milling itself may be heard from nearby homes and businesses. Bright and flashing lights will be used in the work zone. Traffic signals will be set to flashing stops while crews are working at night.

Signals will operate normally during the day. Overnight work is expected to last four nights.

The project will take approximately three weeks to complete.

New Legion Post 566 chef has Mississippi roots

LINO LAKES — Visitors to American Legion Post 566 have likely noticed a new face in the kitchen along with new food options.

Shoreview resident Ronnie Keyes became the new chef in March. Tom Meister, of the closed Meisters Bar and Grill (now known as Shore 96) in Shoreview, joined the Legion team in January to get the Legion’s food service up and running after Joe Moore, of Joe’s Showcase BBQ, parted ways with the Legion. After establishing a complete lunch menu, Meis-

ter’s job was complete.

General Manager Diana Cox began her search for a new chef and stumbled upon Keyes, whom she felt would be a great fit. “I spent hours and days interviewing different candidates ... Replacing Tom was going to be a tough job, as he was an integral part of opening the restaurant. I was worried. Very worried. And along came Ronnie,” she said.

Keyes is originally from Biloxi, Mississippi. His passion for food stems back to his childhood when his very large family had delicious food at family reunions. He always thought food was “intriguing,” but never thought

about a career in the industry until an injury stopped him from playing college basketball.

He started his career working as a chef on a cruise ship for three years. “It was a fun job. I was barely 21 and just trying to get into the industry, but I learned a lot,” he said.

He then moved to Minnesota, where he attended St. Paul College and worked at the Radisson Hotel in St. Paul for seven years. He then moved back home to take care of his sick father and built a home on the Gulf Coast. After his home was demolished in Hurricane Katrina, he made his

way back to Minnesota and worked at the Porterhouse in Little Canada for 10 years.

At this point in his career, Keyes said he was ready for a change. “I have been managing people for the past 20 years and this is a staff of just a few people, instead of cooks, dishwashers, servers.

(Managing so many) is a lot of work. I ain’t in my 20s anymore,” he said.

Keyes said he plans to establish more consistency for Legion visitors when it comes to hours of operation and food.

Decreasing tick exposure It’s summer and that means ticks are active and the risk of tick bites resulting in Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses is present. Here are some helpful tips to help you plan for a safe and tick-free summer.

Blacklegged (deer) ticks that transfer Lyme disease and other illnesses live in tall grasses and wooded, brushy areas that provide food and cover for white-footed mice, deer and other mammals. This habitat provides the humidity ticks need to survive. Exposure to ticks is greatest in the woods and along fringe areas (border between grass and the woods). Ticks typically attach to people/animals near ground level from the tips of low-lying vegetation and shrubs. They do not drop from tree branches. There are several measures you can take to protect yourself, your family and your pets to reduce your risk of tick exposure.

Habitat modifi cation • Keep grass mowed short, brush and weeds trimmed and leaf litter away from your home.

• Maintain a natural barrier between grass/play areas and woodlands with wood chips or other paths cleared of vegetation.

• Remove dead wood, brush piles and invasive species (buckthorn, garlic mustard, leafy spurge and common tansy) from your yard. Dead wood, brush piles and invasive species create breeding grounds for white-footed mice. They provide cover from natural predators such as owls and other birds of prey.

Decreasing habitats for mice is a vital component of any tick management program. Mice are a key vector in the life cycle of tick borne illnesses.

Repellents and acaricides application Using repellents and acaricides (insecticides specifi cally designed to kill ticks) on humans and pets is one of the most effective methods to repel and kill ticks, thereby preventing ticks from attaching and causing illness.

For humans • DEET is one of the most effective agents to repel ticks and decrease the chances of a tick bite, but depending upon the concentration, it may not provide total protection against the blacklegged tick. There are a variety of formulations designed to meet the needs of all family members, including children.

Follow the labeled directions for best results. Apply DEET sparingly to all exposed skin, and spray on clothing when possible. Do not use DEET under clothing or over cuts, wounds or irritated skin. Do not apply to pets—DEET is not indicated for pet use. Other pet-specific products are the best option for effective control (see below).

• Permethrin-based repellents kill and/or repel ticks when in contact with material where it has been applied. This agent has been used for decades to treat lice on the scalp of children and has a wide margin of safety for humans.

Apply to clothing only. Apply to shoes and pants where ticks are most likely to be in contact with humans. Most products remain effective through several laundry cycles. Simply wash with soap and water if you get it on the skin.

Do not apply on clothing while it is worn. Sawyer Permethrin spray can be purchased from Amazon.com, Target or REI for around $15 for a 24-oz bottle. Insectshield.com and REI sell permethrin embedded clothing that has been proven to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. It is effective through 70 launderings.

For pets Pets are an important vector for ticks to travel into homes and come in contact with family members. There are several highly effective products that both repel and kill ticks on pets. Be especially careful to use dog products on dogs and cat products on cats as they are often times not interchangeable and can be highly toxic when used on the wrong species! Although some products with different mechanisms of action can be combined to provide a synergistic effect, do not use multiple products on your pet unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian. Look for products specifi cally labeled to kill/repel ticks as some products may be limited to treating/repelling fleas, mosquitoes or other flying insects.

For yard • Acaricides may be applied to yards by a professional or a homeowner to foliage and brush where ticks are active. There are many commercially available products that are EPA registered and designed for this application.

Products intended for this application will be specifically labeled as being effective for tick control and also indicate how often to repeat the application.

Most products are applied every other week, some monthly, starting in May through July. It is recommended to spray in the evening when winds are low to avoid interactions with bees and other native pollinators.

• Deer repellents—such as Liquid Fence—are useful for keeping deer out of yard. By spraying it biweekly on plants that deer are known to eat, you will encourage them to look elsewhere for food.

• Tick tubes (small cardboard tubes stuffed with insecticide treated cotton) have been used with varying levels of success. They are designed to provide nesting material for white-footed mice. When mice are in the nest, attached ticks are killed without the mice being affected. There are several commercially available versions (e.g., Damminix tick tubes) that are EPA approved. They are typically available from online vendors such as Amazon. com, as well as some home improvement and gardening centers. These are most effective when used from May through July.

Classifieds coming back

W

hen online sites like Craigslist fi rst hit the market, the classified sections of many newspapers went into a downward spiral. Newspapers lost a niche with the classified sections: help wanted, garage sales, items for sale by owner and real estate.

For years prior to the advent of online ad sites and the recession, a solid 30 percent of Press Publications’ revenue came from the classified section of the paper. For nearly 20 years now we have implemented our own online tools and stayed true to being focused on the local marketplace. Although we are not back to the 30 percent benchwe continue to challenge Publisher’s mark, and test our classified section.

Here are a few observations.

View First, there is no silver bullet Carter Johnson when it comes to hiring. One human resources director who advertises with Press Publications mentioned that when she receives applications and resumes from the paper, they tend to be qualified local hires who stay past the two-week training program. While standing in line for lunch at a local establishment, another business owner told me that he lands his staff from Press Pubs, and pointed at a new hire.

A classified ad in our paper may not bring hundreds of resumes to your inbox, but it will bring a handful of qualified local candidates and you will save time sifting through resumes from around the state and country. If you’re looking to hire, make Press Publications classifieds part of your hiring campaign by placing a fun, upbeat posting.

With today’s digital apps, some garage sale type items can be sold online before a sale even happens. It’s often still worthwhile to have a sale. Garage sales in the paper have a following and get real local foot traffic. This time of year we are seeing between 7 to 20 garage sales in our weekly papers, and we also provide signs for our advertisers to further help them market their sale.

For sale by owner items such as boats, automobiles and real estate also have a place in the local paper. If items are in good shape and are priced at market value, they tend to sell with little hassle. I recently sold an investment property in Cambridge, a single family lake home, through a classified ad in this paper. We had between one to three calls a day on the listing and it closed 45 days after we fi rst ran the ad. I sold an outboard motor the other day from an ad in the paper.

I have tested Craigslist, Offerup and Facebook Marketplace to sell furniture, appliances, collectibles, and my outboard motor, and found I spent too much time answering dumb questions, fielding lowball offers and deferring scams. Most items listed in the paper have sold within two to three weeks. The paper has always provided me a solid buyer.

Digital sites have little to no accountability.

People who try to sell online share how frustrating it is to fi nd people who are legitimately interested. They sometimes spend a few days communicating with a potential buyer only to be stood up. It begs the question if it is worth it.

The people who read our classifieds tend to be serious buyers.

New program connects isolated youth and seniors

S

eniors in our community are living longer than ever.

By 2020, it is estimated that people age 65 and older will outnumber school-age youth. At the same time people of all ages, including seniors, are lonelier than ever before.

According to a recent Cigna Health Insurance survey of over 20,000 U.S. adults, nearly half of survey respondents reported that they someor always Movers and times felt alone or left out.

Shakers While loneliJerry ness is on the rise across all age Hromatka groups, seniors often have fewer resources to combat the problem.

Physical frailty, lack of transportation and retirement from work can hamper seniors’ ability to get out of the house and interact with others. Our long, cold winters don’t help, either. And in our increasingly busy society, many younger generations find it difficult to regularly socialize with their elders.

In the midst of these two problems, lies an opportunity. Research confi rms that one of the best ways to combat loneliness is to get out and be with people.

Research also shows that helping people through volunteer work reduces loneliness while also lowering levels of depression and anxiety in the volunteer.

Ironically, one generation experiencing high levels of loneliness is exceptionally qualified to help seniors combat theirs. According to the Cigna study, members of Generation Z (people age 18 to 22) report some of the highest rates of loneliness. They are also the most technologically literate adult generation we have ever seen.

While improper use of technology and social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat can increase feelings of isolation in some, there is evidence that other apps like FaceTime and Skype which allow people see and speak directly with others, can do much to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness. We are fortunate that seniors who need our help are surrounded by youth and adults have the skills to reduce it.

Because of this, Northeast Youth & Family Services is working on a new initiative to help match young people and adults in our community with seniors who need help accessing social media applications that will allow them to connect with loved ones and form new social groups. It will complement our existing program which matches volunteers of all

ages and youth who need a job, with seniors who need indoor and outdoor chore help. The in-person interactions between volunteers and seniors who participate in this new initiative will also work to reduce feelings of loneliness.

In addition to just being a good thing to do for seniors, a study conduced by AARP and Stanford University also indicates that a reduction in senior loneliness has significant physical health benefits that can result in fewer hospitalizations and lower overall medical costs While this project is still in the development stages, there are many volunteer opportunities out there right now for people who either feel lonely or want to help reduce it in others the old-fashioned way. Web sites like volunteermatch .org will quickly connect you to people who need your help.

As our “silver tsunami” continues, so will advances in health care, housing, and products designed to help seniors live longer.

But there is no substitute for the human contact which helps all of us live better lives.

So take a moment to see where you can volunteer. It will be good for you and others.

The biggest threat to democracy might be the loss of local newspapers

I

f you’re reading this column in your local newspaper, congratulations! Just by skimming your eyeballs over this page, whether it’s in print or online, you’re doing a vital service for your hometown, and for democracy as a whole. (Go ahead and take the rest of the day off.)

It’s no secret that local journalism is in trouble, and has been for quite some time. According to a 2017 report from the Pew Research Center, the weekday circulation for U.S. daily newspapers has been on the decline for 28 consecutive years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that between 1990 and 2016, the number of newspaper employees in the U.S. declined from 456,300 to 183,000.

Despite the vitriol that publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post attract from the Trump administration, it’s not the national news media outlets that we need to worry about. Their subscription numbers are on the rise. It’s the smaller newspapers that serve local markets that are suffering. Many are

chronically understaffed. Some have shuttered altogether.

A map created by the Columbia Journalism Review reveals that communities all across the United States have been “left Movers and with no daily local news outlet at all.”

Shakers What’s the cause of all these news deserts?

Lata Nott It’s the internet (to paraphrase the Simpsons, “the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems”). Local newspapers lost print subscriptions when people started reading the news online (and came to expect it to be free). They lost another major source of revenue when their classified sections were supplanted by Craigslist. Their digital editions have to compete for eyeballs and advertising revenue with websites that traffic in national scandals, political commentary and cat videos.

This isn’t just a financial hardship

for your local newspaper. According to a new paper co-authored by three professors of finance, it’s a financial hardship for your entire town. The researchers looked at cities that lost newspapers between 1996 and 2015, and found that within three years of a newspaper’s closure, the costs for municipal bonds and revenue bonds increased for these cities. Here’s how they explained the connection: “Revenue bonds are commonly issued to finance local projects such as schools and hospitals, and are backed by the revenues generated by those projects...

[T]hese bonds are rarely regulated by the state government. A local newspaper provides an ideal monitoring agent for these revenue-generating projects, as mismanaged projects can be exposed by investigative reporters employed by the local newspaper.

When a newspaper closes, this monitoring mechanism also ceases to exist, leading to a greater risk that the cash flows generated by these projects will be mismanaged.”

In other words, local newspapers

provide a public good, one that can be measured in dollars and cents. The problem is that today’s marketplace doesn’t really reward them for this. An article about amazing dogs will always generate more advertising revenue than coverage of a city finance committee meeting. (You know which one you’re more likely to click on. Just admit it to yourself and move on.) But the latter article could actually prevent municipal corruption. Even if no one reads it, public officials are more likely to behave ethically when they know they’re being monitored. As citizens, we tend to take this effect for granted.

Maybe we need to stop thinking about our local newspapers as businesses that need to turn a profit and start thinking about them as utilities that we need to fi nance for our own good.

And yet the leftist goal here in the U.S. remains the same, to repeal the Second Amendment, which is the demand of retired U.S. supreme court justice John Paul Stevens.

Whether Hillary Clinton, who supported an Australian-style disarmament of law-abiding citizens and disagreed with the Heller Supreme Court Decision for a citizen’s right to defend themselves, or billionaire Michael Bloomberg, their true goal remains the same, to repeal the Second Amendment. This position is held by fully 39 percent of all Democrats, as well as senior Democrats like Karen Carter Peterson, Louisiana Democratic party chair. It is critical for any gun-owning Democrat to leave their disarmament party. Many lifetime Democrats are joining this movement; it is time to walk away. Legislature takes borrow-and-spend approach Did you notice that the big tax cut passed by the Republican Congress and signed by the President has made our federal deficit a lot worse? Our country will now borrow $1 trillion a year indefi nitely, even in a good economy. Here in Minnesota, the Republican-led Legislature is following the same playbook when it comes to infrastructure. In the latest bonding bill, the Legislature is borrowing $400 million in trunk highway bonds. This allows our State Rep. Randy Jessup to say he offered money for roads “without raising taxes.” Of course, borrowing for our trunk highways — the ones with the heaviest traffic — is nothing new. But this is a historically large amount of borrowing. The revenue source to pay back the bonds is the Highway User Tax Distribution Fund, which is funded by the gas tax, license tab fees, and sales taxes on cars.

This means we are taking money from future projects to pay for things today.

Our Legislature needs to be honest when it comes to fi nances and not play these games so Republicans can say they haven’t raised taxes. Jessup and his fellow Republicans keep mortgaging our future with this borrow-and-spend approach. Kelly Moller is running for the Minnesota House in District 42A and she is going to be honest about what it takes to maintain our infrastructure. I urge everyone to vote for Kelly Moller.

MOUNDS VIEW SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Mounds View Public Schools Board took the following action at its June 26 meeting: • Denied two grievances fi led by paraeducator employees, per the recommendation of the grievance committee.

• Approved fi nal budget amendments for the fiscal year 2017-18. Total revenue in the fourth quarter was $1.6 million and expenditures $1.3 million.

• Adopted the 2018-19 budget as presented by Carole Nielsen, executive director of administrative services, and Bridget Peterson, director of finance. The fiscal year 2018-19 budget was developed based on the assumptions provided by the school board through several meetings and work sessions over the past six months. The proposed budgets represent the financial projections for the district for the general fund, nutrition services fund, community services fund, construction fund and debt service fund.

Total revenue is projected at $191 million and expenditures $267 million. The unreserved general fund has equally projected revenue and expendi-

tures at $145 million and the district will maintain a fund balance of $25.3 million.

The nutrition services projected revenue and expenditures are both $6.2 million. The community services budget also has equal projected revenue and expenditures of $6.1 million.

The building construction fund has projected revenue of $4.3 million and expenditures of $63.9 million. Bond reserves will provide resources for that fund.

The debt service fund has $16.8 million in projected revenue and $16.5 million in expenditures.

The summary stated, “Superintendent Lennox is an outstanding leader in all capacities. RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

North Oaks • County animal control was asked to remove a snapping turtle from the tennis courts on West Lake Drive the afternoon of June 13, which they did gingerly. The snapper was given a ride to Charlie Lake.

• Homeowners complained about a solicitor going through backyards on Raven Road looking for pest control business June 16. The 24-year-old Murray, Utah man was cited for trespassing.

Solicitors and homeowners alike are reminded that it is illegal to solicit business door-to-door in North Oaks.

• Three teen males were collared while fishing in Pleasant Lake in the afternoon on June 20. An adult, 18, out of Lino Lakes was cited for “fishing on a closed lake,” and trespassing. Two juveniles, one from Andover and the other from Circle Pines, were cited as well.

• A 2010 Ford Escape, parked for the night June 26 in a Deer Hills Court driveway, went missing but was recovered the morning of June 28 in Inver Grove Heights. “I forgot to lock it,” the owner said.

The vehicle was not damaged.

Shoreview • Deputies responding to a request for a welfare check on a resident in the 4500 block of Dale Street the evening of June 13, found the unresponsive 66-year-old woman on a couch in her apartment with the door wide open. The senior was determined to be “heavily intoxicated” and was transported to Unity Hospital for treatment.

• Damage to a cover on a pickup truck parked overnight at a hotel lot in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road June 14 amounted to $500 and the loss of hand tools inside added another $600 according to the victim, a 50-year-old man from Chetek, Wisconsin.

• A 50-year-old Dover, Florida man was pulled over June 16 in the area of Rice Street and Country Drive for operating a motor scooter without license plates. The driver also had no insurance and a suspended driver’s license. The scooter was impounded.

• Hockey-loving thieves took a net and goalie silhouette valued at $90 the afternoon of June 18 in the 3000 block of Owasso Heights Road.

• A three-wheeled Pontiac Sunfi re was possibly stolen by a thief or abandoned by its owner June 19 in the area of Highway 96 and Lexington Avenue. No sign of the owner, the thief or the fourth wheel.

• A fi rearm-carrying man was seen June 19 near Turtle Lake Elementary School after school had been dismissed for the day. The armed man, who appeared non-threatening to witnesses, was gone when deputies arrived.

• A local Grandma, wise to the internet grandson scam, received a call the afternoon of June 20 from a man with a deep voice saying “We have your grandson.” “You’ve got Billy?” Grandma wailed. “We’ve got Billy,” he replied and went on to explain to Grandma how to send $4,000 by FedEx courier to ensure Billy’s release. Grandma, who does not have a grandson named Billy, called 911.

• Spotting four males on Turtle Lake Beach after hours on June 20, county water patrol deputies told them to call it a night, except for one. The 19-year-old local man was wanted on a felony

warrant for his arrest for financial transaction card fraud. He was transported to jail.

• Ladies arguing the afternoon of June 21 over vehicle issues in the 1600 block of Knight Street included a 31-year-old local and a 41-year-old out of Minneapolis. The younger woman punched and pushed the older woman down. She was charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct and booked into jail.

• Galtier Place residents mom, 56, and daughter, 20, got in a fight the night of June 21 regarding the daughter’s boyfriend. Mom locked herself in a bathroom when the daughter produced a 12-inch kitchen knife. Mom called 911 while the daughter literally destroyed the bathroom door with the cutlery. Deputies arrived and it was taser time for the daughter who was taken to Regions Hospital for a mental health evaluation, then to jail on domestic assault and disorderly conduct charges.

• A cargo case, a fire extinguisher and headrest in an unlocked 2000 Subaru were stolen the weekend of June 22 in the 4200 block of Brigadoon Drive.

• Change and blank checks were stolen June 24 after a vehicle in the 800 block of Colleen Avenue was rifled through overnight June 24. A glowing dome light directed deputies to the targeted vehicle.

• A 26-year-old local woman parked her unlocked vehicle on the street in the 3100 block of West Owasso Boulevard the night of June 24 and by the time she got to where she was going her stolen Discover card had been used to rack up $95 in charges. An investigation is underway.

The 2017 improvements included a roundabout, trail access, raised medians, new road shoulders and a new roadway which will enhance safety and access to the developing Rice Creek Commons.

Construction is underway to complete fi nal roadway striping and sidewalks and trails. Work is expected to be complete in early July.

He is also working on a full dinner menu that will feature a lot of comfort foods. He has already replaced the frozen soups with made-from-scratch soups. “I am trying to be as creative as I can and make some good food,” he said. He will also incorporate his specialty, steaks, with steak nights.

Since March, Keyes said he has enjoyed getting to know community members and learning what they like and don’t like. “We are sparking up some good conversations and building some relationships,” he

said. “The good thing is I see a lot of these people every day/week and they know the consistency of my food. If I see Bob, I know he doesn’t like tomatoes, so I won’t put them on his plate.”

“Ronnie loves seeing the members and guests every day and is even starting to remember everyone’s name. He loves managing the kitchen and enjoys the opportunity to be creative with his dishes,” Cox said. “He can’t wait to bring in some of his innovate ideas such as steak nights, rib nights and the full catering menu option he is offering.”

Keyes invites residents from the region to the Legion. “If you are in the area, stop by and try something from the menu,” he said.

Veteran finds purpose through junk removal

One person’s junk can often times be another person’s treasure.

Managing his own junk removal business, an area veteran has found a new way to give back to his community while helping veterans with the transition back to civilian life.

Vadnais Heights resident Josh Helm, a 2004 White Bear Lake High School grad, serves as the White Bear Lake territory partner for JDog Junk Removal & Hauling.

“I get to help people and truly make an impact on veterans. I can help them if they are struggling with the transition from military culture to the civilian world,” Helm said. “And I get to give back to the community that I am from.”

JDog was started in 2011 by Gerald “Jerry” Flanagan, who is an honorably discharged Army veteran who obtained the nickname “JDog” while in the military. JDog franchises are located all over the U.S, but the White Bear Lake location is the only franchise in Minnesota.

JDog offers a variety of services including residential and commercial junk removal, estate/foreclosure clean outs, labor services, cardboard/paper/metal recycling and industrial clean outs.

Helm opened up the business in April, which serves the entire metro area. For many months now Helm has tried to fi nd a warehouse space for the business, but has been unable to locate one.

“The purpose of JDog is to empower veterans through employment and entrepreneurship,” Helm explained. “We try to hire as many veterans and veterans’ family members as possible but we also have civilians too.”

After Helm graduated from high school, he

enlisted in the U.S Army and volunteered to go to Iraq in 2006 for a year. He went back for a second tour to Iraq in 2008-09.

“I got back from my fi rst tour and PTSD wasn’t really a thing yet. I was going through a lot of issues finding myself.

I couldn’t really relate to many people. I kind of ran back to Iraq, to where I felt safe,” he said. “When I was in Iraq on my second tour I realized I had some experience being a leader and could help some of the younger guys.”

After getting out of the military in 2012, he tried to become a chef and worked at various local venues. “I wanted to be the next big thing but I wasn’t very good,” he said.

One of Helm’s friends, who he met on his fi rst tour in Iraq, is in charge of a JDog franchise in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and invited him to come check out the business and what it entails. After training under him for six months, Helm started his Minnesota business.

Karyn Essen, a Hugo resident, serves as the operations manager.

She met Helm when he was the chef at a restaurant she managed. “We have always worked together so it just seemed right for us to do this together,” she said.

In addition, the venture makes Essen feel she is giving back to her country in a way she was never able to. Her dad, uncle, grandpa and great uncle all served in the military and she was planning to join the Air Force, but her plans changed after she had her son.

“I am proud to be a part of something bigger than myself and have found a way to say thank you to those who gave so much,” she said. “What makes

One of these eggs is not like the others ...

June is a fascinating season to watch nesting birds—some people are lucky enough to be able to watch nests fill with a new egg each day in their very own yard. But in the building excitement of nesting season, a note of confusion creeps in when an egg arrives that looks conspicuously different from the others.

Chances are, it’s the egg of a brown-headed cowbird.

Cowbirds are native to Minnesota, but their parasitic nesting habits are potentially threatening to other species of birds, and do not gain them any points among bird-watchers.

Cowbirds, members of the blackbird family, do not raise their own young. Instead, female cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, which then raise the cowbird chicks alongside their own offspring. Sometimes, the cowbird eggs hatch sooner than the eggs from the other bird parents, giving it an earlier opportunity to begin feeding, and a greater chance of surviving than the nest’s intended occupants.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, cowbirds have been known to lay eggs in the nests of more than 200 species of birds, and recent studies have shown that individual females tend to specialize on one particular host species.

This can be a problem for certain rare and threatened species, such as the Kirtland’s warbler and black-capped vireo. These parent birds end up “wasting” their efforts in raising cowbird young that will do nothing to help the threatened species’ recovery.

Some birds are smart enough to realize that the egg is not their own, and they will dispose of it. In this case, a female cowbird will sometimes engage in what ornithologists have called “mafia behavior”— destroying the entire nest.

Later in the nesting season, observers might see an adult warbler or vireo feeding a fledgling more than half the size of the parent—seemingly none the wiser.

Since cowbirds grow up raised by other types of birds, they are born with instinct that eventually leads them back to their own kind. An article in Audubon Magazine published in 2016 shared the

results of a study that suggested that young cowbirds have an innate urge to roost in fields overnight— where they are more likely to run into others of their own kind. Young cowbirds were documented “sneaking out” of their adoptive parents’ nests at night to spend time with other cowbirds.

It can be difficult to watch a nest be taken over by a cowbird, but cowbirds, like other migratory birds, are protected by the U.S. Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This means that it is illegal to take eggs without a permit.

The removal of a cowbird egg can even cause host parent birds to abandon the nest.

Most naturalists suggest that letting nature take its course is the best plan of action. A recent article in Audubon Magazine included a quote from Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of California-Santa Barbara Steven Rothstein: “It’s a natural process and we shouldn’t attach human values about killing or being sneaky to the natural world.”

Adaptive day on the lake Midwest Ski Otters Water Ski Team hosted an adaptive water skiing day Saturday, June 23, which provided skiing lessons for people new to the sport who have disabilities.

Ski Otters member Caroline Grubs, 16, grew up snow skiing and helped put on a similar snow skiing event with Courage Kenny Research Institute.

Grubs wanted to bring adaptive skiing to the water.

She contacted the Courage Kenny Research Institute to make it happen.

“Everybody had fun skiing next to each other and helping in the water,” Grubs said. “To meet new people was super fun.”

Adaptive skiers ranged from someone who had autism to someone who was paralyzed from the waist down. One person ended up joining the ski club.

“It was super fun to see the smiles of the people there,” Grubs said.

In the clear water of Florida’s Blue Spring State Park, majestic creatures surrounded Wayne Hartley’s canoe, surfacing gently to breathe one after another, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh … 36, Hartley said.

Only 36 manatees?

Weaving around about 300 manatees peacefully floating in the warm spring this January, it was hard to imagine the day when Hartley began documenting manatees as a ranger in the park in the 1980s. At that time, there were only 36 manatees wintering at the spring near Orange City, Florida. This winter, 582 individual manatees were counted, 70 over the record.

Hartley called out the names of manatees from his canoe — “Hello Precious,” he said. “Howie … Ansel … Nick … Sickle … I think the scar looks like a sickle.” Lily’s scar looks like a flower. About 99 percent of the scars are caused by boat propellers.

Hartley has a book of about 400 drawings of manatees and their scar patterns — the work of nearly 40 years, first as a park employee and now as a part-time staff member of Save the Manatee Club. Each winter Hartley identifies new scars or observes how they heal.

We slowly glided up the spring run off the St. John’s River. At 72 degrees no matter the air temperature, it creates a warm winter haven for the manatee that can die due to cold stress. Mist floated above the spring as it met the cool air.

“Phyllis,” Hartley called out. My heart skipped a beat at the heavily scarred gray blob.

This was the manatee I had adopted through the Save the Manatee Club adoption program as a child in the 1990s.

Seeing her among so many young manatees and knowing she would have been one of few 20 years ago, I was struck by what people can do for wildlife and the environment when they come together in small ways.

Publicity from organizations like Save the Manatee Club, plus laws and regulations to protect manatees, have likely helped the manatee bounce back, Hartley said. Every year, the base manatee population wintering at Blue Spring increases. He also sees less scarring.

In 1991, there were a total of about 1,200 manatees in Florida, according to a synoptic survey by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

There were about 6,100 manatees counted in the 2018 survey.

One of the best ways to protect the manatee from afar remains to join advocacy groups like Save the Manatee Club to promote education, legislation, rescue and rehabilitation.

I don’t know what causes a girl from Minnesota to fall in love with a giant gray creature that she has never seen. What I do know is that we are all meant to take care of something on earth, to come together with others

Hartley said he fell in love with manatees while reading a wildlife book as a child. “I was amazed that such an animal exists in my country,” he said.

The gentle giant has a snout similar to an elephant’s trunk, with

Drop-in center for couch-hopping youth opens in mall

My friend is homeless and I heard about this place, can I check it out? asked a young woman standing expectantly outside the Northstar Youth Outreach Center in Maplewood Mall on a June afternoon.

Volunteer Ron Ofstead gladly showed her inside, pointing to the computer stations, snacks, hygiene items and clothes available at the drop-in center for homeless or couch-hopping youth and young adults.

The former salon on the southwest end of the mall has been transformed into a safe place for youth. It’s the second location of the Northstar Youth Outreach Center operated by Harriet Tubman Center East, a social service agency and shelter in Maplewood.

Volunteers from the White Bear Lake Unitarian Universalist Church social action committee helped start the fi rst location at Tubman Center East in 2016. Several other area churches and the White Bear Lake Rotary Club joined the effort. They named it the NorthStar Youth Outreach Center in honor of Harriet Tubman, who led slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad by following the North Star in the 1800s.

However, the location was off the beaten path for youth on the go, Ofstead said.

“We decided we needed to get closer to the kids,” said volunteer Daniel Wachtler. The group was looking for a second location but a spot at the Maplewood Mall was going to cost the nonprofit about $30,000 to $40,000 a year, Ofstead said. When mall

staff learned about the nonprofit’s mission it offered a space to the Tubman Center for $1,200.

“Mall staff say they see 30 to 40 youth a day they think are homeless,” Ofstead said.

Homeless people are known to frequent the area around the mall.

Nearby Ramsey County Library – Maplewood recently launched a noon summer meal and snack for youth in need ages 18 and under. A free lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and snack 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is the second summer the library has served up to 30 youth a day through a grant, said library Manager Bill Michel.

About 250 people have come by the youth dropin center in the mall since its soft opening

in March, according to TaMica Tody, Tubman project coordinator for youth services. She holds group events for youth in the center to learn about community resources or be inspired by an artist. Youth can be bused to Tubman Center East to use showers, do laundry and stay for the night if a bed is open.

It is difficult to fi nd open space in shelters in the Twin Cities, Ofstead said. A drop-in center focused on youth ages 13 to 24 helps bridge the gap, Tody added. Most of the youth who use the center are 18 or 19 years old.

“The leading cause for youth homelessness in Minnesota is domestic violence,” said Anna Sahli, Tubman violence prevention educator.

“couch-hopping” don’t consider themselves “homeless,” so a mall is a great place to meet youth so they can learn about resources. Tubman Center East offers tutoring, job searching and housing assistance.

“We just meet youth where they are at when they come into this space,” Tody said.

The center is accepting donations of food, hygiene items, clothes, bus passes and gas cards. Items can be dropped off at the center or at White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church, 328 Maple St.,

Hiking 100 miles for health care workers

A group of fi refighters, police offi cers and nurses will be hiking 100 miles Aug. 17 in an effort to bring more attention to violence against health care workers.

The hike will begin on the Minnesota/Canadian border and go south 100 miles along the Superior Hiking Trail, ending at the Temperance River in Tofte.

Jeff Loeks, who started Special Teams Charities based in White Bear Lake and works as an emergency room technician at a St. Paul hospital, says violence against nursing staff is increasing each year and is at the point where something needs to be done.

“I thought a hospital was a place where you sought help and therefore treated nurses and doctors with respect,” Loeks said. “I never could have imagined that a big part of the job would be trying to anticipate who was going to try and hit you. What we are witnessing at hospitals now has crossed the line to being sickening.”

Loeks is interviewing health care workers who have been assaulted and sharing their stories online, hence the name “100 stories.” One is a nurse named Julie Schultz, who suffered a traumatic brain injury. They are dedicating the fi rst mile to her.

Loeks said what he is seeing in hospitals is “breaking my heart.”

“We actually had a guy come in with a samurai sword. It’s getting worse and worse,” he maintained.

Why hike 100 miles? “It’s not going to be very pleasant for any of us,” Loeks said. “We are not avid hikers. I believe when you suffer together, people tend to form a bond. And this is a group of people who have seen a lot of bad things. Hopefully this will bring necessary attention to this problem. If you assault someone on the street, you’re going to jail; but for some reason, you can still assault a nurse and for the most part you’re just going to go back home after your drugs or alcohol wear off.”

At the end of that 150-mile trek, Loeks ended up going to the emergency room for cellulitis. He suffered severe blisters and swollen legs. It’s the main reason Loeks is sticking to a hiking trail. “I’m done with pavement,” he said.

Joining Loeks once again for the cause is Ron Hawkins, a former White Bear paramedic who was a member of that three-man team.

Mounds View’s Ciganik breaks state Season awards listed high school record in pole vault for state runner-up

Mounds View pole vaulter Calvin Ciganik, shaking off a disappointing end to his senior season, achieved his fi rst 16-foot vault and broke the Minnesota high school record recently.

Ciganik soared 4.92 meters, or 16 feet, 1 3/4 inches, at a USA Track and Field Minnesota Summer Meet in St. Louis Park on June 19.

There are five such meets each summer and fi ve each winter.

The previous record was 16-0 by Grant Krieger of Blake in 2013.

Even though he had graduated, Ciganik gets credit for the state high school record on the lists kept by raceberry.com. Those records are recognized by the Minnesota State High School League, said John Millea, the league’s media liaison.

With plans to become an Air Force offi cer, Ciganik will continue his pole vaulting career

as an athlete at U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. He has already reported to Colorado Springs, CO, for basic training.

Ciganik was state champion as a sophomore and runner-up as a junior, and this past season had by far the best vault in the state, 15-9, his previous best.

However, he failed to qualify for state when he started at 14-3 at the section meet and Calvin Ciganik missed three attempts.

Ciganik was being coached by Pete Erickson of the Mounds View staff and by a club team coach, John Pollack.

Josh Sampson and Calvin Ciganik received top honors for the Mounds View boys track team that was state runner-up in both the true-team and regular MSHSL meets.

Sampson, a junior who earned state titles in 110 high hurdles and the 4x400 relay, and placed third in the 300 hurdles, was named MVP for track events.

Ciganik, senior who was the state leader in pole vault during the regular season, was MVP for fi eld events.

Blaine’s TPC lands PGA tour event: the 3M Open Locals excited about national spotlight, economic impact

The best golfers in the world, coming into your town for a tournament — every year.

That’s the exciting news for the northeast suburbs that the Professional Golf Association (PGA) confirmed in a press conference June 18.

A regular tour event will be held at TPC in Blaine, starting in 2019, with a commitment of seven years.

The event will be called the 3M Open.

“Minnesota has showcased how good golf is here,” Hollis Cavner told the Associated Press. “It’s time to go to the next level.”

Cavner is executive director of Pro Links Sports, which will manage the 3M Open. He also manages the 3M Championship, a thriving seniors tour event which TPC has hosted since 2001.

Minnesota has also gotten good marks for hosting the 2009 PGA Championship and the 2016 Ryder Cup, both of them at Hazeltine in Chaska, helping bolster the case for a PGA Tour event.

“We are very excited about it. The buzz around the club has been great,” said Alan Cull, TPC general manager. The club would not comment further, Cull added, until the dates of the 2019 tournament are announced.

Attending the press conference with high anticipation were members of the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce.

“We are thrilled that an official PGA Tour event is coming to the TPC-Twin Cities,” said President Lori Higgins. “It will be a wonderful way to showcase Blaine and Anoka County on a national stage. Also

The business community will be ready, she added.

“Of course, thanks to the many years of the 3M championship, the USA Cup (soccer), and other large events, north metro businesses will defi nitely be ready and able to provide top-notch services to all the visitors.”

Blaine City Manager Clark Arneson was asked about the city’s role in this development.

“The City was in a support role. Hollis and 3M did the work,” Arneson stated. “The City work begins now with logistics and security. The economic impact of an event like this is $50-$70 million. The event will draw three times the Champions tour number of visitors/attendees to Blaine.”

Cavner told Eyewitness News that he started pitching Minnesota to the PGA eight years ago. When the PGA approached his group two years ago, it became a question of “when, not if.”

Cavner said he expects the 3M Open will attract most of the top players, while predicting that it will be one of the biggest events on the tour within a couple years.

Also at the press conference was Paul Keel, 3M's senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing-Sales, who pledged 3M’s continued commitment. Asked about tickets, Keel noted that while tickets were free to the 3M Championship, there will be a charge for the 3M open, with prices around the average PGA Tour cost.

Minnesota has lacked a regular PGA Tour stop since 1969. The St. Paul Open ran from 1930 to 1956,

The Professional Golf Association (PGA) will be holding tour events at Tournament Players Club (TPC) in Blaine, starting in 2019, with a commitment of seven years. The event will be called the 3M Open.

and was revived as the Minnesota Golf Classic from 1966 to 1969. Those were all played at Keller Golf Course in St. Paul, except the last two, which were at Hazeltine, and at Braemar in Edina.

“The Twin Cities deserves this,” said Tom Lehman, Minnesota native and 1996 U.S. Open champion who, along with Hall of Famer Arnold Palmer, designed the TPC course. Interviewed by the Star-Tribune, Lehman added, “It’s a great golf market and a great sports market, period. It’s had a Ryder Cup and Final Fours and the Super Bowl. I can understand why 3M would want this, why everybody would want this.”

The fi nal 3M Championship at TPC will be held Aug. 3-5. Next year, this seniors event will move to Sioux Falls, S.D., to make way for the 3M Open.

Two dates on the PGA summer schedule opened up when existing tournaments were moved to the fall portion of the schedule for next year. Those were the Houston Open, which has been in early June, and the Greenbrier Classic, over July 4. Most likely, the 3M Open will take one of those slots.

The PGA Tour will announce the dates of the first 3M Open along with the rest of its 2019 tour schedule on July 20.
