Food shelf moves to new location The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf moved to a more accessible location last month.

It is now located at 2544 Mounds View Boulevard (formerly County Hwy 10) in Mounds View in the former Mr. Muscle Gym space in the Silver View Plaza strip mall. It was previously located in the Pike Lake Education Center in New Brighton.

There will be a Community Open House on Aug. 21 to celebrate the new location. All community members are welcome to visit between 4 and 7 p.m. for food, fun and refreshments. Bring a friend, meet staff and receive a tour of the new space.

The event is sponsored by Thrivent Action Team.

The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf is a program of Mounds View Public Schools. Ralph Reeder’s mission is to provide emergency and supplemental food assistance to individuals and families in need and to connect them to other helpful resources in a manner that preserves their dignity and empowers them to take steps toward self-sufficiency.

Mobile vet makes pets feel at home — fur real

Molly the yellow Lab, of North Oaks, sat as still as she could while veterinarian Dr. Sandra Soucheray, of Shoreview, examined her ears.

“It’s a little red in there,” Soucheray noted as Molly sat comfortably on the floor in her own home.

Molly received a one-time ear infection treatment that is new to the market. “I call it the magic pill,” said her owner, Bruce Carlson, who has seen the treatment be successful before.

Soucheray and her vet technician, Theresa Miniscalco, also gave Molly, Georgie and their brother Cooper the poodle vaccines and drew blood to check for heartworm. They also had a general checkup. Cooper, 13, is aging and has been experiencing anxiety, perhaps due to his vision being affected in dim light.

There’s a treatment for that, Soucheray said. She didn’t recommend medication right away, but instead recommended a pheromone collar or thunder jacket.

“It’s like a baby being swaddled,” Soucheray said, who has been seeing Cooper since he was

a baby. She has cared for the Carlsons’ pets since she worked at a brick-and-mortar clinic.

Carlson said having a mobile vet is much more convenient and saves time. “One hour, three dogs — try to do that and go to the vet and come home,” Carlson said as Soucheray and Miniscalco wrapped up their work. The veterinarian will even visit his pets at his office in the North Oaks strip mall if needed, he added.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Community Center expansion update

The Shoreview Community Center major expansion project that started last fall is nearly complete. A significant portion of the project is completed and in use for classes and programs. The addition adjacent to the gymnasium opened in July. The four new activity rooms located on the upper level will be used for a variety of classes ranging from cooking to theater and dance, beginning in September. Reservations for these rooms are currently being accepted for parties and events after Sept.

1. Guests can access these rooms from the newly expanded Fireside Lounge.

The four new fitness studios, including a dedicated cycling studio, are also open on the lower level. With these state-of-the-art studios, the Community Center is now offering new classes and the flexibility to try them all. Individuals can purchase the Group X Card and attend any classes, and no advance registration required.

Now that the new fitness studios have opened, renovation of former Studio 2 is now underway. This area is being renovated to a stretching and

training space within the Fitness Center and is expected to open in mid-September. Work will also be starting in late August to replace the carpet and rubber flooring in the Fitness Center. The Fitness Center will remain open during this work; however, there are a limited number of pieces of equipment available.

The flooring work is expected to be completed in early September.

The Tropical Adventure Indoor Playground is closed through midSeptember to complete the major expansion and renovation. The renovation includes a much larger playground area, a greatly expanded toddler area and improved seating for adults. A new entrance to the playground will be available through the new lower level hallway so guests will no longer need to go through the gymnasium to access the playground.

Work continues on the 7,500-squarefoot expansion to Bamboo Bay in the Tropics Indoor Waterpark. Bamboo Bay will be a zero-depth shallow water splash pool with a major interactive aquatic play structure. It is expected to open in fall 2018.

Rotary event supports local youth

The Shoreview/Arden Hills Rotary Club will hold a Taste of the Hops event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Snail Lake Regional Park.

The cost is $30. The event includes beer samples from local craft brewers, food, music, raffles, door prizes and a silent auction. Proceeds go to youth scholarships and exchange programs, Rotary sponsorship of community activities and international Rotary programs including Polio Plus, the global initiative by Rotary to end polio worldwide.

Ramsey County Library – Shoreview will host a presentation

by Nancy Koester, Ph.D. about the life story of Harriet Beecher Stowe — woman of faith, fascinating Civil War figure, and author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The discussion will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

Koester’s Minnesota Book Awardwinning biography, “Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Spiritual Life,” discusses

the fascinating life of a woman who dared to speak against slavery — in a time when women could not even vote. Stowe’s anti-slavery novel helped change American history by showing that slavery must be stopped. Its popularity made Stowe the best-selling author of the 19th century. There is no pre-registration.

Admission is free and the program is open to all.

Prices reduced for theater tickets

Lakeshore Players Theatre has lowered ticket prices as a thank you to the community for its support in building the theater’s new home at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center in White Bear Lake. Lice Lounge growing its business

Jess Fleming was tired of bringing her children to and from the Lice Lady in West St. Paul for lice checks.

“We need something on the east side of the cities where people can get checked,” she said.

So Fleming founded the Lice Lounge in January 2016 in the middle of downtown White Bear. It's off Third Street down an alley between Country Charm Boutique and Hollihan's Pub. The Lice Lounge has seen patients from all over the state to check for the parasites. Fleming saw so many families from Duluth, she decided to start a Lice Lounge up north.

What makes the Lice Lounge different is the natural way they get rid of lice — or Pediculus humanus capitis — one strand of hair at a time. Appointments take about 90 minutes to two hours with Fleming or one of the four other moms who work at the Lounge.

“Cleaning the house is not really necessary,” Fleming said. “The bugs do not live in our environment off the head. It's less than a 2 percent chance that lice will be on your pillowcase, hat, helmet or anything like that.”

Lice only get spread by head-to-head contact. With young children not having much personal space, the bugs can spread quickly. Summertime is a popular time for the Lice Lounge because children have more play dates and there is more chance for head-to-head contact than during the school year.

“Recess, lunch and bus rides are when the most

connection happens at school,” Fleming added.

Fleming describes the Lice Lounge as an ER treatment place, because you never know how many patients will come in during the day. One girl came in with pink hair; a common misconception is that if a person colors their hair then they won't get head lice. That wasn’t the case this time around. Fleming searched through her pink head of hair and, sure enough, picked out the pink-colored lice.

Once a female louse is pregnant, it will remain pregnant for the rest of its life and lay around eight to 10 eggs a day. Each egg takes seven to 10 days to hatch and another seven to 10 days to become adults and start laying eggs. Lice are blood-compatible, meaning they only survive with the blood type they started on. When a lice bug is transferred to another head with which it's not compatible, it will die, but not before laying eggs — and those lice will be compatible.

Rita Groneberg went with her two daughters to the Lice Lounge two summers ago after they got lice from a fitness club. After Fleming combed through their hair, she found 100 lice on each of Groneberg's daughters and a single egg in Groneberg's hair as well. Groneberg bought combs and special shampoos and went back for free check-ups.

She stressed what a good job Fleming and the other women at the Lice Lounge did educating them about head lice.

“Lice won't hurt you,” Groneberg said. “You just have to remove them.”

Thankfully, it has been over a year since Groneberg and her daughters made an appearance at the Lice Lounge. One thing Groneberg has done is text

“I highly recommend this place,” Groneberg said. “It was easy to book appointments online, the ladies are really nice and they have electronics for the kids to play on because appointments can take awhile.”

Now with two locations, Fleming's goals for the Lice Lounge are education for others and themselves. She has been connecting with school nurses in the area to be supportive and just got back from the annual school nurses’ meeting in Baltimore.

Time to celebrate

O

N AUGUST 3, Kathy and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. It has been a good run. We have been favored in so many ways and give thanks daily to our Lord for the partnership, four children and their spouses, five grandchildren and 5-1/2 great-grandchildren.

Time has gone fast and in this column over the years you have read of our many adventures.

We have learned a lot together. We have shed tears of both joy and sorrow and have laughed a lot together over the dumb things we do and About the have done.

We still have a bucket list of travel destinations and Town continue to enjoy long-time Gene Johnson friends as well as making new ones.

The Th community newspaper business allows us to connect with many people in many different walks of life. We are fortunate to have friends from around the world.

Living on the water in the winters builds close friendships. Wherever there are common bonds, relationships flourish.

On Aug. 4, Gordy and Kathy Jarvis helped us celebrate on the St. Croix River on their river boat, the Afton Princess. Many of our friends were there to help us enjoy that and the good food catered from the Afton House.

LATER THIS MONTH Kathy and I will be working at our favorite museum at the Minnesota State Fair. The Letterpress Museum located on the front side of the 4-H building allows us to share the hot metal process of printing a paper each day of the fair.

We plan to be there for the morning shift from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 28, 30 and Sept.

2. One feature of the museum is printing and handing out First Amendment posters, as well as bookmarks and the Maynard News which is printed daily. This year the fair introduces more than 70 new food items.

THIS SUMMER HAS provided Minnesotans with a lot of good weather days and a lot of moisture which has enhanced trees, shrubs and flowers.

But it has also caused more blind intersections for motorists. Homeowners need to take responsibility if they have overgrown shrubbery at intersections, but motorists also need to take extra care.

SKY-BLUE WATERS Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are part of what this state is all about. The many lakes are part of what makes it different from all other states. One of Minnesota’s nicknames is “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” but it really has a lot more. The state is on the shore of the biggest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior, and Minnesota is where the world’s third largest river, the Mississippi, begins.

Making good choices is a constant effort

T

he food deck is stacked against us. I don’t like to present a dismal, dark and foreboding picture, but unless you are proactive, intentional and well versed in good food choices, the nutritional quality of the food that we consume is not great. These feelings are with me because of a trip I recently took when my efforts to eat well were especially challenged. Often in summer, schedules are different, and we are out of our normal eating patterns and habits, which presents unique nutritional scenarios. If we stay on track by planning ahead though, and making intentional decisions about what we are eating, it is possible to stay steady with nutritious foods. I’d like to share a couple stories from a recent trip: what I think I did well on, and what I could have done better with and some suggestions should you find yourself in need.

For part of our trip, we stayed in a house with my extended family. It was a blast, and we had some lovely meals that we prepared and ate together. Given all the people there though, there was a lot of food and beverages to choose from, or to be chosen by. One night the consensus was to order pizza- albeit really good pizza, I honestly did not want pizza (especially after lunch out at a brew pub). I volunteered to be in charge of a salad to go with the pizza — and a whopper of a salad I made, although it took some time and

required a trip to the store and the nearby farmers market. I intentionally included protein sources for salad toppings, such as tuna and garbanzo beans, so that it could serve as the main meal for those that didn’t want pizza. I was really happy that I made that salad happen; I didn’t have the pizza that night.

There was so much salad that when we packed up our car the next day Movers and to drive across several states to get to our next Shakers destination, I packed up some of the salad and Megan Baumler ate it for lunch on the road. Being on vacation is never a reason to forgo efforts towards healthful living, although it can become more challenging. I think of healthful living as being kind to yourself — why be less kind to yourself on vacation?

Another night on this trip, we found ourselves in a very nice hotel that did not have a microwave in the room. The lack of a microwave meant I couldn’t have my oatmeal in the morning (I travel with oats), unless I purchased it elsewhere. We had to purchase meals, morning, noon and night for the several days that we were in this hotel (on top of eating out many meals on the way to our destination, and on the way home). We

did have some nice meals out, but I ended up going to a grocery store and choosing some foods to have in the minifridge at the hotel that could tide us over so that we only had to eat out one meal a day.

This worked out well, and I wished I had thought of it the first day. Yogurts for breakfast, and sushi, fruit and vegetables for lunch. My protein bars and nuts filled in for snack needs. When we made it back home from our trip, I was happier than I can ever recall to be reunited with my kitchen and have more control over my food choices.

Sometimes though, food appears in my house that I did not bring home or choose and is extremely tempting. A good approach is to have a plan for when this occurs, rather than passively letting yourself be taken over by aromas and temptation that will be regretted later.

Tonight, we walked in the door after an evening bike ride. While we were gone, my husband had come home and made a frozen pizza. It smelled good, and it looked good. I wasn’t even hungry, but I ate three pieces. I wouldn’t describe the feeling I have as regret, but more of “that wasn’t worth it, I didn’t need that and that was not an intentional choice.” Not to be misunderstood — I purchase frozen pizzas sometimes, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with choosing frozen pizzas on occasion for dinner. The point is that it was a passive move on my part

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Republican State Rep. Randy Jessup stopped by my house recently to drop off his literature and introduce himself. I told him that I support Democrats. He then left by saying, “Just don’t vote for a progressive!” I just thought that was odd. Some pundits and news sources have taken words like “liberal” and “progressive” and turned them into epithets.

A progressive is someone who believes that our work is not done. Republican President Theodore Roosevelt called himself progressive because he thought the status quo created barriers against clean water, competition in the marketplace, and safe workplaces. Progressives (in both parties) have broken down barriers to Americans in civil and voting rights, gender and marriage equality, the environment, public health and safety, infrastructure, safe food and water, and equal protection before the law. Not all these goals have been realized completely despite what the law says, or past accomplishments are under threat.

Please look around, Rep. Jessup. We have it pretty good in Minnesota because progressives stood up and provided so many of the things we enjoy today. So yes, I’m a progressive because America and Minnesota still have a lot of work to do.

to let temptation take over when I didn’t even really want the pizza. It was the end of the day, my guard was down, the salty tangy scent of the familiar comfort food appealed to some reward center in my brain, and it just happened. I’d like to be in more control than that.

The unfortunate fact is that the effort to make good choices almost has to be constant, because we are endlessly bombarded with tempting foods. Over time though, with a plan in place and with lots of practice, we can become better at bein g in control of our food choices and staying on track with nutritional balance, even in challenging situations.

Let’s work together to make the best choices we can when we are inspired and on track, so that when we are challenged or in unique scenarios, an unintentional setback will not have a large effect or derail all efforts. I approach exercise with the same mentality — when I am able, I get my exercise in, so that when I’m in situations where I’m not able to be active, it is OK. Make room for these scenarios, but also have a plan in place to avoid them.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS gone but waited for him to return in the 600 block of Mound Avenue. He did, and the 42-year-old was booked into jail on a disorderly conduct charge. The relationship between the two was unclear.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

Shoreview • A couple was awakened in the middle of the night July 17 by a noise that startled them. Burrowing deeper into their beds in the 200 block of Oak Hill Drive, the 42-yearold husband and his 40-year-old wife promised each other they would check it out in the morning. They did, learning that a pair of key fobs, valued at $1,000 each, had gone missing along with a wallet from inside the house. The wallet was found intact in their backyard the next day. No suspects.

• A Ham Lake driver draped over the wheel for a period of time at a station in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue in the wee hours of July 17 was awakened by a deputy and commenced to fail field sobriety tests. The 32-year-old out of Ham Lake was booked into the Ramsey County Jail on a fourth-degree DWI charge.

• Responding to a complaint by a 56-year-old woman regarding a male spitter in the early morning hours of July 19, deputies found the spitter

• A 57-year-old male resident of Viewcrest Road reported that someone had accessed his checking account between July 17 and 19, draining $482 in funds. The case remains under investigation.

• Deputies interrupted the getaway of three theft suspects at Kowalski’s Market the afternoon of July 18, pursuing their vehicle and stopping it on Highway 96. The ringleader, 48, who had a pair of felony warrants for his arrest, was charged with false information to police and booked into jail. A second man, age 26, and a woman, age 23, were issued trespass notices and released.

• It was like a bad dream to the man behind the register when a gang of thieves — approximately 10-15 juveniles — exited a party bus and entered Gas Plus in the 3400 block of Rice Street the night of July 20. Some did purchase items, but others, the complainant believes,

took merchandise from the store without paying. Unknown what was stolen. Unknown suspects.

• Bike thieves were reported in the early morning hours of July 24 in the 700 block of County Road F. The 66-year-old female homeowner reported the loss of a black-and-gold Easton BMX bike valued at $300, one additional bike not described and a black leather “motorcycle bag” from a garage.

• Only the person with the flashlight outside the window in the 1200 block of Sunview Court at 9:38 p.m. July 25, now gone, knows the reason why they were there.

• Two men entered a liquor store around mid-day July 25, one picked up a bottle of Patron, a high-end tequila priced at $44, and both made tracks. No suspects.

• A trolling motor and a pair of batteries — unknown total value — were stolen from inside a boat parked in a carport and reported July 25 in the 700 block of County Road F. No suspects.

• A vehicle was pulled over at Highway 96 and Mackubin Street the night of July 27 and the driver, a 61-year-old St. Paul man, was

booked into the Ramsey County Jail with a more than twice the bloodalcohol content limit. He was also charged with fourth-degree DWI, driving after license revocation and open bottle.

• A lane-changer in the 4600 block of Lexington Avenue who failed to signal also aroused suspicion in the pre-dawn hours of July 29 by driving below the posted speed limit. The 60-year-old St. Anthony man went on to fail field sobriety tests and was quickly on his way to jail on a fourth-degree DWI charge.

• A prowler rummaged through items in an unlocked, detached garage overnight July 30 in the 4100 block of Sylvia Lane. Only a red and black Shop-Vac of unknown value went missing. An investigation continues.

• On the same night July 30, possibly the same prowler entered an unlocked home in the same block of Sylvia Lane, making off with two laptops, an Apple watch, an iPhone, a DSLR camera and lenses, and several credit cards. The total value of the loss was in excess of $4,000. Lock your doors, folks. An investigation is underway.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Sheriff’s office catches 110 mph speeder The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office was one of more than 300 law enforcement agencies that participated in an extra speed enforcement campaign in Minnesota from July 6 to 22. Officers, deputies and troopers issued 14,661 citations for unsafe speeds and 1,625 seat belt citations. During the campaign, 25 agencies reported speeds of 100 mph or more. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office cited one person going 110 mph. Some of the excuses and traffic stops law enforcement encountered during the two-week period: • “Trying to make it to Taco Bell before it closes.”

(99 mph in 65 mph zone) • “Just picked up a glass cake pan from a friend, excited to get home and start cooking.” (45 mph in 35 mph zone) • A motorcyclist riding 120 mph-plus in a 50 mph zone recently bought the motorcycle and wanted to go fast. His best friend died in a motorcycle crash this year.

• Two different troopers cited the same driver for the same speed about 32 minutes apart. (79 mph in

You got me.” (83 mph in 55 mph zone) Cost of a speeding violation varies by county, but it will typically cost a driver more than $110 with court fees for traveling 10 mph over the limit. Fines double for those traveling 20 mph over the limit.

A driver can lose their license for six months for going 100 mph or more.

In 2017, speed was a contributing factor in 22 percent of single-vehicle crashes. During the 100 deadliest days (Memorial Day – Labor Day) from 2013 2017, preliminary numbers show that 108 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes. Even the best driver cannot overcome the laws of physics — high speed means high energy, which leads to serious and fatal injuries even in the safest of vehicles.

The enhanced enforcement and education effort was coordinated through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety with overtime paid with federal funds received from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The extra overtime shifts also resulted in other arrests and citations for incidents such as DWI, controlled substance and texting while driving.

Sheriff’s office launches donation program to assist homeless The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is launching a new initiative that will provide the nearly 1,500 people who are homeless and released from the detention center each year with a “Care on the Go” pack containing basic necessities and a pamphlet of resources.

Undersheriff Booker Hodges developed the Care on the Go initiative after hearing about a similar program during a Sunday church sermon. “This is something we can do here,” Hodges said. “It’s something we can give people who have nothing, even if just for a day. Even if you’ve been arrested, even if you are in jail, you are deserving of care. As an agency and as people, we expect ourselves to always be compassionate.”

The office is calling on community members to help make Care on the Go packs a reality with donations. Care on the Go items can be donated at summer Hot Dog with a Deputy events, during Night to Unite, and at several Ramsey County building facilities including the Law Enforcement Center, main Courthouse, Arden Hills Patrol Station and Maplewood Courthouse. Items needed include white T-shirts (size large), white or black tube socks, personal size body wash, deodorant and shampoo, personal size toothbrush and toothpaste, personal size wet wipes, packs of 8 oz. (small) bottled water, granola or protein bars and baggies (gallon size).

Monetary donations to purchase items for the packs are welcome as well, in the form of checks made to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Foundation.

Artist booth burglarized at Slice of Shoreview event

A vendor booth containing hand-crafted jewelry was burglarized overnight during Slice of Shoreview Days July 28.

Tami Kellermann said she left her booth for her jewelry business, Well-Traveled Jewelry, about 9 p.m. and when she returned the next morning, 80 percent of her jewelry was gone.

The total cost of the jewelry stolen was about $3,600. She had taken some of the most expensive pieces with her overnight.

Leaving art and crafts in a booth overnight is typical at such events and there is security provided, Kellerman noted. Thefts are rare, and the close-knit area jewelry artist community was surprised.

“It is unheard of,” Kellermann said. “Everybody is just in complete shock. Nobody has ever heard of this kind of major theft at an event.”

As for Kellermann, she said she doesn’t plan to leave any jewelry overnight again at a future event.

A few license plate art pieces were also stolen from a nearby booth.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office was providing security at the event.

“They are on site all night long,” Kellerman said.

“This is how I make my living,” she said. “There is just no way I can recover that loss in a year.” She uses

the income to put food on the table, send a child to college and celebrate her daughter’s wedding — the weekend following the theft. Her jewelry art has turned into a successful business. She sells at five large events in the Twin Cities and in some retail stores. She has an in-home studio in Blaine. She holds another part-time job to supplement her income.

Her next big event is soon — Aug. 17 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. She’s scrambling to put together some pieces but that isn’t easy, because she makes her jewelry out of vintage treasures she searches for all year long.

Her jewelry pieces include vintage drawer pulls, skeleton keys, Victorian buttons and shoe clips, and repurposed vintage jewelry.

“I see beauty in it and I will take it apart and remake it into something new,” she noted. She started Well-Traveled Jewelry 3 1/2 years ago as a way to heal from trauma.

“When I am making a piece of jewelry … I put my whole heart into it. It is just a crushing blow to have had this happen.”

The theft is under investigation by the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.

New law reforms handling of sexual assault exam kits A new state law co-authored by Rep. Randy Jessup (R-Shoreview) took effect Aug. 1. Its provisions will reform the way sexual assault examination kits are handled, provide clarity to law enforcement and put power back in the hands of survivors seeking justice, according to Jessup’s office.

The law came after a 2015 audit done by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) found a statewide backlog of nearly 3,500 untested kits, including some involving open cases.

“Since becoming a legislator, I have worked hard to ensure that victims of sexual assault receive the justice they deserve,” said Rep. Jessup. “This law is a critical step in the right direction in the fight against sexual assault in Minnesota. I was proud to be a co-author on this legislation and look forward to continuing this important work in the future.”

The new law requires law enforcement to retrieve an unrestricted sexual assault examination kit for testing within 10 days of notice and submit that kit for testing at a forensic laboratory within 60 days. “Unrestricted” means the patient has authorized law enforcement to submit the kit to a forensic laboratory for testing.

The law makes clear that the kit does not have to be tested if it’s believed to not have

evidentiary value in a case (if there is a confession, for example), but still requires law enforcement to make a record with the county attorney on why the kit did not add evidentiary value.

The kit ensures victims are more easily able to track their kits through the system, requiring law enforcement to respond within

30 days to requests from victims about when their kit was submitted to a lab and whether a DNA profi le was obtained from testing.

It also requires law enforcement agencies to provide liaison services between the victim, agency and lab, helping victims more easily navigate what can be a complicated and overwhelming system. The

goal is to create clear procedures for victims who may choose to come forward at a later date with testing and reclassify their kit from restricted to unrestricted.

This new law was crafted in a working group which included stakeholders associated with law enforcement, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA),

Thousands gather at funeral for corrections officer ARDEN HILLS — Thousands attended a memorial service for corrections officer Joseph Gomm, who was assaulted and killed by a prisoner at Stillwater prison Wednesday, July 18.

The service took place at North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills, many of them members of the armed services and law enforcement organizations. The service was open to the public. Gomm was remembered by many throughout the service for his selflessness, his authenticity, his loving friendship, his bold Christian faith and his tender actions such as rescuing birds found at the correctional facility. Following the service, a nine-mile procession began at the church and drove down Snelling Avenue to Gomm’s interment at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville.

Minnesota Correction Facility-Stillwater colleague Shawn Yurick remembered Gomm in his eulogy this way: “Joe had this way of when I would ask him for help … he always finished with ‘whatever.’ So I never quite knew if he was saying yes to it or no to it. But then I got to realize that was Joe’s love language. ‘Whatever’ to Joe was really that—whatever, whatever you need, Shawn”. Yurick also made this remark, in response to those who wondered if Gomm really would have wanted a full honors funeral: “Whatever it would take for you to heal … for the community of Stillwater to heal … that is a lack of limitation, whatever … that is love.”

Gomm was attacked while on duty in an industry building at Stillwater prison and rushed to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The offender is serving time for homicide.

“Corrections Offi cer Joseph Gomm gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Minnesota,” said a statement from the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC).

“Joseph was a dedicated officer who served with the department for 16 years and cared deeply about others.”

A resident of Blaine, Gomm enjoyed cooking and playing video games, and had a love for animals.

The investigation must be done as thoroughly and methodically as possible, a press release stated. The Washington County Attorney’s office will charge the case. Washington County Attorney Pete Orput has stated he will “bring an aggressive prosecution.”

DOC staff said they could not share how many staff have resigned due to this incident, but three staff members at the prison have resigned publicly since the date of the incident.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to collect money to support Gomm’s family.

Gov. Mark Dayton released a statement and ordered flags flown at half-staff on Thursday, July 26, the date of Gomm’s funeral.

“I am appalled at the horrific murder of Offi cer Joseph Gomm,” said Dayton. “On behalf of all Minnesotans, I offer my deepest sympathies

three years now. She worked in a clinic for 13 years before launching her own mobile practice, Dr. Soucheray’s At Home Veterinary Care. She keeps all her equipment in her van and provides care in the pet’s home. No exam table is needed; pets respond better to treatment in their natural environment — the floor or even their pet bed.

She became familiar with mobile vet service while working for one in Minneapolis before she attended veterinarian school. She thought the service helped pets be more comfortable and after working as a veterinarian in both clinic and home settings, she can attest to it.

“A lot of pets don’t like traveling in cars,” she noted. Hospitals and clinics also have odd smells, weird noises and pets have the potential to catch illnesses from sick animals.

A cat belonging to one of her clients hadn’t been to a vet for years before seeing Soucheray because it was so difficult to take the animal to the clinic.

The mobile vet and technician were able to easily relieve the cat of urinary issues caused by severe hair matting, Miniscalco said. They don’t judge if an animal hasn’t been to the vet — they are just there to offer help.

Being inside homes also gives the duo opportunities to see how changing the

animal’s environment could help it manage a behavioral issue or illness, such as osteoarthritis. Soucheray’s mobile service includes vaccines, evaluations, blood work, treatment for many illnesses, behavior and nutrition control, and hospice and palliative care. She refers clients to a nearby hospital she recommends for surgeries.

Being a veterinarian requires not only animal skills and medical knowledge but people skills, too, since pets can’t tell vets about their symptoms.

“It’s a little bit like being a pediatrician,” Soucheray noted.

One of her specialties is in-home euthanasia.

Working at a clinic, she always tried to give families as much time and space as they needed, but with her own mobile practice she is now able to offer families a more personal experience. For example, families can have their pet sedated in their favorite place outside while the family says goodbye.

This year, Soucheray was among one of 62 veterinarians around the world who were the fi rst to be certified in hospice and palliative care by the International Animal Association of Hospice and Palliative Care. The certification included courses, papers, a conference and an exam.

Soucheray graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. She received her bachelor’s degree in art and history and worked

Tri-City Red — that’s Mounds View — repeats as state Legion baseball champs

A team that’s called Tri-City Red (TCR), but is actually all Mounds View athletes, has risen to the top of state American Legion baseball for the second straight season.

Coached by Nik Anderson, a Mounds View and TCR alum in his third year, they achieved this impressive repeat last week in the 16-team, double-elimination tournament at Edina —and advanced with a 31-7 record to the Great Plains Regional in Dickinson, N.D., Wednesday through Sunday.

TCR foiled Mankato National 3-2, Alexandria 4-1 and Edina 2-0, then fell to Wayzata 4-2 in a duel of the last two unbeatens Saturday evening.

Bouncing back Sunday, with bats coming alive as pitching staffs wore down, TCR edged Rosetown 10-9 to clinch a regionals berth, then avenged their lone loss at state with a 16-8 shellacking of Wayzata. That win officially gave them the state title.

“We came into today confident that we can hit any pitcher, and can shut down any team’s hitters,” said John Solfest, pitcher and shortstop who was named tournament MVP after hitting .333 with four RBIs while posting both a one-hit shutout and a gutty save.

“Our hunger from losing the first game to Wayzata pushed up our play in the championship. The pitchers were not the top-end ones today so we capitalized on that.”

The squad continued to live up to what Coach Anderson said about them after they qualified for state by winning their sub-state tournament: “I don’t think we ride momentum so much as we just compete hard for seven innings, regardless of whether we are up or down. We don’t get high or

low, we just continue to grind.”

Anderson is assisted by Jake Hanzalik (pitching coach), Scott Becker and Lars Anderson.

Tri-City Red collected five state titles between 1993 and 2000, but at that time players in three communities were pooled into three teams, and the top players were assigned to the Red team.

In recent years, the policy changed, and high school teams are left intact.

Worth noting: with these last two crowns, the Mounds View players gave TCR a record-tying seven in a tournament that’s been held since 1926. Eden Prairie also has seven, all between 2004 and 2013.

Ty Koehn pitched six innings in the 3-2 win over Mankato, with Solfest relieving in the seventh to get TCR out of a bases-loaded jam with three consecutive outs at home plate. Solfest also hit a solo homer. Carter Traczyk was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Brett Bateman pitched the distance in the 4-1 win against Alexandria, giving up a leadoff homer to Brock Thompson but nothing more, striking out seven. Will Rogers gave TCR a 2-1 lead as he blasted a long RBI double and scored on a wild pitch, and Matt Herold added a two-run single.

Solfest, a senior-to-be, was masterful in a 2-0 win over Edina, allowing just one hit and no walks, striking out five, needing just 80 pitches. “My pitches were all working and I could trust my defense; they made some great plays,” said Solfest, who notched his third shutout. Jonah Sparks singled home one run and the other scored on a wild pitch.

homer in the seventh. A reliever finished. Josh Bonde pitched five innings and took the loss.

This squad is hard to beat, Anderson noted, “when it comes to playing with their backs to the wall.” They showed that Sunday.

Against Rosetown, TCR took a 10-5 lead into the seventh, getting two RBIs each from Solfest (two doubles) and Cole Senstrom (two singles) while Koehn went 3-for-4. Four pitchers — Hunter Ault, Herold, Jake Christopherson and Carter Traczyk — gave up 11 hits. Rosetown scored four in the ninth before Traczyk retired the 1-2-3 batters on infield outs for the save.

The finals rematch with Wayzata was a wild one, tied 7-7 after two innings. TCR pulled ahead 14-8 with six runs in the fourth — including a three-run homer by Rogers. Bateman was 4-for-5, Koehn 3-for-3 (solo homer, four runs) and Ben Jepko knocked in three runs. Rogers, a sophomore who played VFW most of the year, was also a pitching hero, allowing just one run in the last 5 2/3 innings in relief of

Sparks, the team’s top hitter (.455) for the season, was 8-for-17 at state in the leadoff slot. Koehn was 7-for-13 with seven runs, Traczyk 9-for-19, and Justin Langer 8-for-17, hitting safely in all five games. Rogers was 4-for-12 and led with six RBIs. TCR took the same path as last year, when Ham Lake was the team that beat them in the fourth round but lost to TCR in the finals.

For the second straight year, this squad was very good in the spring, as Mounds View, but much better in the summer, as Tri-City Red. They went 1711 in the high school season this year, won their section and went 0-2 at state.

Last year they were 17-9 and section runner-up in the spring before nabbing the first of two Legion crowns.

‘Nothing like wearing a USA uniform’ says Mustang athlete after placing 7th in world track meet

Julia Fixsen, the Mounds View pole vaulter who qualified for the world junior track-andfield meet, tied for seventh place at the event July 10-12, competing against older athletes.

The senior-to-be scaled 13 feet, 9 1/4 inches (4.20 meters) in the IAAF World U20 Championships at Tampere, Finland. She was the highest American finisher, and the youngest of 12 competitors in the field.

“I was the youngest vaulter to make the finals. It didn’t really faze me because I was able to talk to everyone and I felt really comfortable,” Fixsen said. “Plus, it didn’t hurt that I was the tallest one out there, so I didn’t feel diminished.

“It feels like this is just the beginning. At

least I hope so. Something to build off.”

Looking ahead to 2019, Fixsen will aim for a third state high school title, and then making another Team USA for the Pan Am Games.

“There is nothing like wearing a USA uniform,” she said. “It makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Fixsen had cleared 13-9 1/4 to win the state high school championship, and 13-11 3/4 at USA Track and Field junior nationals.

Capturing the U19 world gold medal was Amanlie Svabikova of Czech Republic with 14-9 1/2 (4.51 meters).

Fixsen traveled and stayed with Team USA, while her parents Laura and James, and coaches Matt and Esther Fleigle also made the trip.

at nationals, struggled with nerves the fi rst day but advanced to fi nals. Baxter didn’t get untracked the second day either and placed 11th with 13-1 1/2 (4.00 meters), well under her personal record.

It was Baxter’s fourth time on Team USA and she served as a mentor

to Fixsen. “We loved getting to know Rachel and her family,” said Laura Fixsen. “She is super talented and very kind.” Julia gave Rachel a consoling embrace when she finished.

Fixsen looked more relaxed in the fi nals, clearing her fi rst two heights and making 13-9 1/4 on her second try. She was well over the bar at 13-11 1/4 but came down on the bar all three times.

In Finland, the Fixsen group tried new foods — “their fresh salmon was amazing” — while exploring the city and, making like natives, jumping into a freezing cold lake.

Thrilled by the opportunity she had, Fixsen reflected, “Everything I have, I owe to God, and I will honor Him with the talent He has given me, for as many days He gives me to pursue it.”

The past weekend got off to a wet start with a round of storms early on Friday, then a round of heavier storms Friday evening. The storms Friday morning had some small hail but it was the storms Friday evening that proved to be a little more interesting, as they were accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and lightning. A local tree took a direct hit from a lightning bolt and was left shattered, with portions taking out the side of the home. In all, I totaled over an inch of rain. The rains Saturday held off just long enough for the Strive 5K/10k to take place along White Bear Lake. Saturday evening and Sunday were dry and outdoor activities returned to normal. Nature Note: I witnessed about 20 turkeys do their evening roosting routine, flying 30 feet into the limbs of trees in…of all places, Nord’east Minneapolis.

Cryotherapy: Freezing away aches and pains

CIRCLE PINES—Does stepping into a minus 250-degree Fahrenheit chamber wearing nothing but some mittens and slippers sound appealing?

A new business wants to show surrounding communities the benefits that come from cryotherapy.

Fit Recovery opened its doors this summer at 2 South Pine Dr. N in Circle Pines.

Owner Keith Moeller, a Blaine resident, opened the business in Ham Lake in March. He plans to close the Ham Lake location once the other location is up and running. He works as the operations manager at the Target Center Life Time. Last spring, Life Time was looking into adding cryotherapy at one of its locations.

“We got to talking about the benefits and what it does and I was sold without even getting into one because I just love being able to help people, that’s the main reason why I’m doing this,” Moeller said. “I know a husband who was in tears one day because his wife, who has had chronic pain for 20 years, was able to get on a motorcycle without stopping. They were able to do the things they used to love doing.

Here’s how cryotherapy works: You enter a cryo chamber wearing a robe, slippers and mittens. Once in the chamber, the robe comes off and liquid nitrogen cools the chamber to temperatures as low as minus 250 degrees. Each session is three minutes long, but some customers choose to do more than one session.

“Your brain tells your body that you are in a hypothermic state, so your blood rushes to your organs to protect them because your organs need to remain at 98 degrees. Your veins constrict, your blood pools in that area to keep it warm and as soon as you step out of the unit and warm up naturally, the blood flows back to your extremities,” Moeller explained. “It is fi ltered blood, it is full of nutrients and it’s oxygenated, it triggers things in your brain and your body that flushes out inflammation. It is kind of euphoric.”

Moeller said cryotherapy offers something for everybody. Fit Recovery has clients who range from a 14-year-old athlete who uses cryotherapy to speed up healing to clients in their 70s who use it to reduce symptoms caused by chronic disease.

Cryotherapy can be used to ease pain, speed healing, reduce inflammation, burn calories, improve skin and much more, according to Moeller. It is often used to help with arthritis, anxiety, depression, Fibromyalgia and autoimmune diseases. Cryotherapy has gained popularity for its use by athletes.

“Cryotherapy helps every single person. You can do anything for three minutes,” he said.

Moeller does cryotherapy two to three times a week. He said his sleep and workouts have improved as a result.

“I love doing cryo and then working out. I noticed I am not so tight, sore, my oxygen levels are better and it’s a much better experience,” he said.

Lexington resident Michelle Koch tried cryotherapy for the fi rst time in April after she agreed to help Moeller with marketing the business.

“I figured I should try it out myself so I could write about my experiences,” she said.

After going for three days within 10 days, she noticed the swelling in her

foot, which had been going on for over a year, miraculously went away. She now does cryotherapy once a week and said the unexplained swelling has not returned.

Lino Lakes resident Kate Selner decided to try cryotherapy in hopes that she would sleep better at night.

Even though that didn’t happen, she noticed many other benefits. After four sessions, Selner had full range of motion in her shoulder, something she didn’t have before the therapy.

She also noticed a reduction in hip pain, knee pain and chronic back pain (from Scoliosis). Selner has also received numerous compliments from her friends about how well her skin looks.

“There is not a spot that it hasn’t worked on,” she said. “I am completely sold.”

Fit Recovery offers whole body cryotherapy and localized cryotherapy (often utilized for an injury). The business also offers cryo facials — a 10-minute session where a cryo wand gets placed over the person’s scalp, face and neck. It contracts the skin and accelerates microcirculation, which encourages collagen production and helps to detox and rejuvenate the skin.

“It closes pores, tightens skins and can help acne and is good for antiaging,” Moeller said.

There is also cryo fat freezing, typically a 30-minute session, which can freeze away unwanted love handles.

When asked about the negatives, Moeller said the only thing that could be considered a negative is the cost.

The cost ranges from $35 to $45 per session for localized/whole body/ facials and goes up to $150 for cryo fat freezing. There are package options to reduce costs, the more sessions you purchase, the bigger deal you get.
