‘Forever, an Olympian:’ Kyra Condie reflects BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR
Kyra Condie was not thrilled with her results, but was elated to compete in the Olympic Games, and especially as a Sport Climbing entrant. Her sport was well-received in its Olympic debut and fi rst world-wide exposure. The 2014 Mounds View graduate got considerable individual exposure herself, too, as her personal story — overcoming a significant back surgery to correct severe scoliosis at age 13 to become an Olympian — made her a popular interview subject. Condie fi nished 11th overall among 20 entrants, in Tokyo, after three events, Aug. 4-6. Her best event was the fi rst one held, Speed, in which she placed seventh. She then placed 11th in both Bouldering and Lead. But she didn’t lose sight of the big picture. “I am, and forever will be, an Olympian,” Condie articulated, in an Instagram post, after expressing regret that she didn’t place higher. To the Star-Tribune, she reflected, “Qualifying here, and now fi nally being here after a two-year wait, it has been honestly dreamlike. I felt psyched and excited and just happy to represent my sport and show what it's all about.'' Just prior to competing, Condie, 25, described Sport Climbing as a perfect fit with the Olympics motto, which is “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” in a Star-Tribune interview. In
but she’s “pretty tenacious” and deals with it. Her mother Cathy recalled when she saw the spine curvature on the X-ray. "I rarely cry, but I did when I saw that, when I saw her X-ray.” People Magazine engaged Condie to provide a series of fi rst-person videos on PEOPLE’S Instagram Story. The video diary’s fi rst-day clips showed their arrival at Athletes Village loaded down with luggage, then piling up their plates in the fi rst trip to the dining hall — “I decided to sample everything because I couldn't make any decisions” — and her going through their Team USA Swag with teammate Brooke Raboutou. Here’s how it went for Condie, who was among 17 Minnesotans in the Olympics, the most ever for a summer Games. In Speed, climbers rush up a 49-foot wall against the clock, two at a time. She beat her opponent and was clocked in personal bests of 8.12 and 8.08 seconds. “I was really happy with how speed went,” she said. She commented, on Instagram, that USA Today featured Condie’s due to her spinal fusion “it’s a reality story on Aug. 3. Condie told the that I sometimes have to have luck national daily that she has “generon my side, with the route-setting, al achi-ness” in her back, and she (and) today wasn’t that day.” relies on a heating pad every night,
Shoreview senior receives student leadership honor BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER
There's a rising star at Mounds View High School, and her name is Elisa Guo. Guo is very active in the community and at the high school. Her activities include student council, Youth and Government and the Science Olympiad, and she is the editor of the school newspaper. This year, she was chosen as a Bank of America student leader — a program that helps prepare students to enter the workforce through skills-building and leadership development. According to Bank of America Vice President and Community Relations Manager Katie Mochorock Hurley, Guo is among 300 young people from across the country who were selected as student leaders and one of four chosen from the Twin Cities. She was selected in part for her commitment to helping others through her leadership in Youth in Government, as founder of the Pen Pal Initiative and as a hospital volunteer. “In Youth in Government, I was elected both Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Vice President of the Mounds View delegation. My role as a leader at the conference is

Project Who Am I helping teens choose ideal careers When Oie Dobier's daughter Nya was looking at colleges in her sophomore year of high school, she realized it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Oie said, “I asked myself, 'Where do you start?' Looking at the career fi rst is the wrong approach. We should start looking at who she is as a person and what she values fi rst before she chooses a career,” Nya’s mother said. “And that’s pretty much when Project Who Am I began.” Oie, her husband Darren, and Nya, of Stillwater, launched the online program, Project Who Am I, in February. “It's an online self-discovery, self-paced program
for struggling teenagers to help them find their ideal career and help them discover who they are as a person,” Oie said. “Each week they have selfreflection exercises to do. We have it set up where they form a small support group and usually a parent facilitates the group session and the group is a sounding board to say what they learned about themselves.” Darren does most of the technical part of the program, and the mother-daughter team, Oie and Nya, are the voice of the business. “Understanding the teen perspective is very important for this program, and it’s really empowering because they think different than us,” Oie said. “Parents and students are getting both perspectives in the program.” Students have a a weekly check-in with Nya, the SEE PROJECT WHO AM I, PAGE 6
