SHOREVIEW — The city plans to add a skate park, outdoor skating pond, pickleball courts and several other new features to the Commons area, where the community center, library and district center is located.

Construction is expected to begin next summer, according to city documents. The plaza-style skate park will be designed by Spohn Ranch Skateparks. It will be about 6,000 square feet. The outdoor skating pond would be a decorative pond in the summer. It is planned to be 84 feet wide and 140 feet long and will have a fountain and thematic lighting in the summer.

The projects are part of phase one of the Shoreview Commons Master Plan. Other phase one plans include an expanded plaza and wedding venue next to the pavilion, formal gardens and nature playground. Better pedestrian connections to the library are also planned.

The City Council unanimously approved spending about $229,000 for the phase one plans at its Aug. 20 meeting. The City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission have been meeting regularly with LHB, an engineering and architecture company, over the last few months to work on the plans, said City Administrator Terry Schwerm.

Park’s trees repurposed as playground

SHOREVIEW — Lake Owasso County Park will have a nature play area opening next summer.

Under construction is a play area made with trees that were downed at the site to renovate the park. The play area will feature an interactive play stream, a creative fort building, log steppers, log balance, embankment slides and climbing opportunities.

“This type of nature play inspires children to use different senses, encourages interaction with wood, soil, water, rocks, and gets them outside where they are creative

within the play environment,” said Kristina Saksvig, Ramsey County Parks and Recreation communications manager. Selected trees that were removed during the park’s grading were cut and shaped for the nature play area. Pieces are currently being placed to create the nature play area.

Bark will be left on trees used for the play area to increase the sensory experience, Saksvig noted. It will likely be removed by children over the years. The nature play area is expected to be completed this fall and open to the public next spring.

The nature play area was created in response to resident input, Saksvig said.

The trees that were removed from the park were approved by the natural resources manager and the county forester, according to the project website. Some of the trees were in poor condition or needed to be removed for renovation to take place. The shape and design of the proposed park was created around healthy, native trees when possible.

Before the renovations are finished, 35 new trees will be planted. Invasive species such as buckthorn and black locust will be removed. Turf seeding and native shortgrass prairie seed are planned for stormwater basin areas and throughout the park.

Shoreview walkers unite

A community walking group recently met up with Mayor Sandy Martin and heard about her vision for citywide walking groups.

Martin launched her “walk with the mayor” initiative two years ago to offer residents an opportunity to chat, promote exercise and use the city’s trails.

“I had always hoped that neighborhood groups would form around the city and that groups would organize around a specific time and walk together,” Martin said. This summer, she learned of such a group in the southwest corner of Shoreview and was invited to join their weekly walk.

The group, led by Ann Gentry, walks for about an hour after putting their children to bed.

“They put me to the test with a 3-mile walk at a nice brisk pace that

ended in total darkness,” Martin said.

“Since Mayor Martin hosts walks, I thought I’d extend an invitation to see if she wanted to walk with our group, too,” Gentry said. “We loved having her join us. She was very encouraging and taught us a bit about Shoreview’s history and current happenings.”

The group began weekly walks in June, Gentry said. She has been going on walks with neighbors ever since she moved to the neighborhood eight years ago, but began planning weekly hourlong Wednesday walks this summer.

“I love connecting with my neighbors,” she said. “I find it refreshing to put my kids to bed and get outside for a bit of exercise with friends.” Anyone interested in joining the walks can email hillsofhomewalkingclub@ gmail.com.

Free workshops on business skills for artists Ramsey County Library is working with Springboard for the Arts to bring the workshop series “Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists” to suburban Ramsey County. The workshops will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 8 to Oct. 27. Work of Art is a professional development curriculum designed to teach business skills to artists in all disciplines — visual, performing and literary arts. Seven workshops will be presented, including marketing, promotions, pricing, legal considerations, funding, grant writing and business plan essentials.

Artists, educators, professionals and creative community members are encouraged to sign up for the whole series, or the individual workshops that best suit their needs. This series is funded by the Metropolitan Library Service Agency. These workshops are free of charge, but registration is required. The Shoreview library will present two programs by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) on mental health and suicide prevention during suicide prevention week this month.

Mounds View High School students from Helping Every At-Risk Teen (HEART) will be on hand to provide information about how they are working to support mental health in the community. The fi rst program, “In Our Own Voice,” will be held at 7 p.m.

Current enrollment projections indicate 11,393 students are expected to attend Mounds View Public Schools this fall. This would represent 203 more students than last fall, and 79 more students than projected. However, actual head counts taken after school starts typically produce a smaller total than late-summer enrollment projections. Currently, all projected class sizes meet board-approved ranges. All enrollment data will be monitored through the start of the school year.

• Heard a report from cabinet members on all aspects of school operations in preparation for the 2018-2019 school year, including transportation services, nutrition services, human resources, facilities, technology and communications. All support areas were ready to welcome students on Sept. 4.

• Heard a report on summer staff development. Angie Peschel, director of curriculum and instruction, presented the board with an update on summer work by teachers. Teams of teachers worked together on curriculum projects and participated in professional development throughout the summer to make improvements, refinements and modifications to curriculum for the 2018-2019 school year. These activities were designed to address district goals and program improvement priorities and include work in the areas of teacher development and appraisal processes, standards-based instruction, monitoring student progress, socio-emotional resources, post-secondary readiness, STEAM and effective instructional strategies, including the use of technology. Most of the curriculum projects began immediately after the close of school in June and are scheduled for completion in August or September. Other projects are being completed in phases and will extend over a longer period. The activities were facilitated by instructional support staff and teacher leaders throughout the summer months.

The board’s next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 18.

The second program, “Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)” will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17. Learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in more than 48 states. National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test announced

Mounds View High School will hold the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test Oct. 10. Registration is due Sept. 12. Registration and payment can be completed online using the district’s ParentVue/Feepay. For more information, visit moundsviewschools.org.

The test is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Scholarship Corporation. The

PSAT is a pre-SAT, administered to students who register for the test. It is recommended that college-bound juniors take this test to prepare for the SAT, which they may take later in their junior year. In addition to SAT practice, juniors that take the PSAT may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program based on their results.

Save back-to-school receipts to receive tax benefits

Minnesota has both a credit and a subtraction for education expenses, reports Rep. Randy Jessup. Both programs reduce the tax parents pay and could provide a larger refund when fi ling state income tax returns for 2018. Qualifications apply, and expenses must be for children attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private or homeschool.

School supplies that qualify for the credit or subtraction include writing utensils, textbooks, musical instrument rentals, tutoring and computer hardware/educational software. Common items that do not qualify for the subtraction or credit include school lunches, uniforms and backpacks. Parents are encouraged to check the Minnesota Department of Revenue website (http://www.revenue.state.mn.us) to determine which expenses qualify.

While the education subtraction is not subject to income limits, the credit is limited to households with incomes less than $37,500 for families with one to two children, $39,500 for families with three children, and adding $2,000 per child for families with four or more children. The Department of Revenue indicates that last year more than 37,500 families took advantage of the education credit, saving an average of $241 per family. More than 186,000 families took advantage of the education subtraction.

Back to school

S

chool classrooms have been scrubbed down, walls painted, and floors waxed. The coming of the new school year also brings big changes in traffic patterns, delays and slow moving buses. That fi rst day of school you might as well schedule a late start at work, make your special someone a nice breakfast, get an extra cup of coffee, and take your time.

Camping out Our kids have been begging to go camping for a few years. We did it a couple of times when they were little with friends who are more experienced and had the appropriate equipment, but we haven’t done any in recent years, and don’t Publisher’s camping own a tent or other camping supplies. So when we were looking (last View minute) for something to fill an extra Carter Johnson day following our company retreat in Grand Rapids, we decided to spend a night at Itasca State Park.

Established in 1891, Itasca is Minnesota’s oldest park. It boasts more than 32,000 acres, more than 100 lakes, 6 miles of paved biking trails, 10 miles of paved multi-use roads, 50 miles of hiking trails, and of course, the Headwaters of the Mississippi River.

We were able to book two rooms at the Douglas Lodge four-plex. The cabin built in the early 1900s was authentic and charming; each room was equipped with a double bed, a bathroom with a tub, screen porch, fireplace and fire pit with a picnic table and chairs.

We arrived Friday evening having purchased all of our supplies at three local stores on the way in. We picked up homemade wild rice and cheddar brats, hot dogs, and other groceries at the meat market in La Porte, and some final supplies at the Lake George Store. Though there is a full service restaurant on site at the park, our son, in particular, was insistent that we cook our dinner over an open flame. Our kids had a tough time starting the campfire, but the meal was ultimately a success. The next day we explored the park, walked across the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi, climbed the fire tower and hiked trails that explained the different types of forest. Staying in the cabin was sort of like a camping experience, but not quite. It was good for our family to get outdoors together, and we learned we didn’t need a bunch of equipment to build memories.

Passport renewal Last spring when dad sent us a memo indicating he would be taking us fishing in Canada in June, I began to write down notes in my phone of items to bring.

This included passports, clothing, LED flashlight, waterproof matches, tackle and bug spray. I immediately reviewed my son’s passport to make sure he was set to travel. A day before the trip I laid out our bags, fishing rods and tackle and pulled out the passports. I nearly fainted when I saw mine was expired. How was I going to tell my family I couldn’t go? I called the local DMV and learned that there is an emergency contact number. I dialed the number and they scheduled an appointment for me at the United States Federal Office Building in downtown Minneapolis. The representative was helpful and was specific in items to bring cash in the exact amount for the expedited fee, proper photos, my expired passport and a few other items. I rushed to White Bear Lake City Hall where they have passport services and had an updated photo taken.

When I arrived at the Minneapolis location, I was told there was no guarantee that I would get a passport that day, but that they would do their best. Luckily by 2 p.m. I had my passport.

Many thanks go out to the local passport service for providing me with quick photos and proper instructions to get a rushed passport. What an asset right here in our community. The crew in Minneapolis provided quick, friendly service. Still, it’s not fun to go through that kind of stress right before a trip.

Trying to get out of debt?

Beware of scams that don’t deliver on promises to help

I

f you are struggling with debts and trying to get your fi nances in order, the Minnesota Commerce Department urges you to beware of debt settlement scammers who will take your money but never deliver on their promises of quick debt relief.

Many reputable businesses and organizations help people get out and stay out of debt. But some companies target debt-burdened consumers with deceptive or false claims, illegal fees and bad advice that can push them even deeper into debt or legal trouble with creditors.

In Minnesota, anyone who offers to renegotiate or reduce your debt with creditors for a fee must be registered with the Commerce Department as a debt settlement provider. The department also licenses credit service organizations, which help consumers improve their credit, and debt management providers, which help consumers develop a budget plan to re-pay creditors. Consumers need to

understand the differences among them because each offers different services and results.

Never make upfront payments.

Advance fees for debt settlement ser-

vices are banned under both federal and state law. Minnesota law states that a debt settlement provider may not charge or collect any money until it has performed the services in the contract.

Read the fi ne print before you sign. Carefully review the written contract so you understand all fees and services. Make sure what you get in writing is the same as what you were told over the phone.

Know your rights. The contract must include a notice of your right to cancel it at any time with 10 days written notice. After cancellation, the debt settlement provider must stop collecting monthly fees and may also be required to immediately refund some fees.

Beware of unrealistic promises, such as erasing your debt for pennies on the dollar in a short time. Debt relief is an intensive process that requires a detailed analysis of an individual’s fi nancial situation. If an

offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Beware of advice to stop paying your creditors. A debt settlement or debt management company cannot tell a consumer to stop paying their creditors. If they do, it is a red fl ag the company may not be trustworthy.

Consider other options. Nonprofit agencies with certified fi nancial counselors can help consumers develop an action plan to improve their fi nances.

Check with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (nfcc.org) or the Financial Counseling Association of America (fcca.org) to fi nd local assistance.

Research report: Same hospital, same surgery, big price differences As part of an ongoing effort to bring greater transparency to the hidden world of health care costs, a new Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) report fi nds large swings in prices between hospitals, and also large price differences within a single hospital.

A patient undergoing one of four hospital procedures may pay between two to nearly seven times as much as another patient at the same hospital, according to the MDH report. As shown, this can mean a price difference from about $7,000 to nearly $70,000.

This report, the second in a series, analyzes the prices paid from July 2014 to June 2015 for a set of four common procedures at Minnesota hospitals: spinal fusion surgery, major bowel surgery, appendectomy and removal of uterine fibroids. To make direct comparisons meaningful, the analysis looks only at commercially insured patients with minor or moderate clinical complexity.

Prices for the most expensive procedures (spinal fusion surgery and major bowel surgery) varied by threefold or more within hospitals.

For example, prices for a bowel procedure at the most expensive hospital ranged from about $14,500 to $68,800 (almost a fivefold difference), and prices at the most expensive hospital

for spinal fusion ranged from about $27,600 to $80,800 (about a threefold difference). Even the hospitals with the lowest average price exhibited sizable variations in prices.

“This degree of variation shows that the health care market lacks meaningful transparency and a consistent link between cost and prices,” said Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm. “This undermines effective competition and rational pricing of health care services, and contributes to the cost pressure that families and businesses are experiencing. Shedding light on prices is a step in the right direction toward a better functioning market where individuals and employers can play a stronger role as informed consumers.”

This round of research aims to describe different aspects of hospital price variation in Minnesota. The research was not designed to show what is causing the differences within and between hospitals. However, national studies provide some sense of what may be driving price differences. Likely factors include differences in labor markets, operating costs, hospital and patient characteristics, and practice styles.

Preliminary results from the MDH study showed that a substantial amount of the statewide variation in prices — about 36 percent — was

related to differences within individual hospitals and was not explained by factors such as severity of illness, length of stay, patients’ age, and certain health benefit characteristics.

National researchers suggest that this type of unexplained variation is likely driven by how much market or pricing power health insurers and hospitals have.

“Employers and their employees have the potential to help drive health care system transformation,” said Carolyn Pare, president and CEO of the Minnesota Health Action Group, a coalition of public and private purchasers dedicated to improving health care outcomes and the overall value of health care services. “To successfully fi ll that role, we need transparency in health care quality and prices. This series of work, which employers helped initiate, is a strong step forward.

Ultimately, though, effective transparency has to identify providers.”

The new report, based on commercial payer data only, is the result of employers teaming up with the Minnesota Department of Health to identify new ways to use Minnesota’s All Payer Claims Database (MN APCD) to better understand health care trends across the state.

LAKE OWASSO: Better boating, beaching FROM PAGE 1

The park is receiving several other improvements as part of its renovation.

The 9-acre park hasn’t been revamped since it was created in the 1960s. The county has designated $1.9 million for the park’s redevelopment.

Improvements include a new beach facility and improved beach, enhanced boat access facilities for both Lake Owasso and Lake Wabasso, fishing nodes, improved paths, new picnic facilities, new restrooms and improved parking for cars and boat trailers.

The proposed design has 116 standard parking stalls, 28 boat trailer parking stalls and two dedicated boat stalls.

The beach will have a paved area, shower tower and shade sail structure with picnic tables. Two new seasonal restroom buildings are proposed. The beach restroom will be replaced with a new building that houses separate changing areas and restrooms for men and women.

The second restroom will be built north of North Owasso Boulevard and will be combined with a picnic shelter with a 60-person capacity.

Solar power will be utilized.

The park will serve as a tem-

plate for net-zero energy use in county parks.

Upgrades to American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards will also be implemented.

Some of the county’s park design plans, including road design and stormwater management, will be completed in cooperation with the city of Shoreview, which has plans to reconstruct North Owasso Boulevard in 2020.

The park will include a trail loop in the parking areas and link to existing city trails.

Sidewalks and crosswalk enhancements also will be developed in partnership with the city.

Historical society moves into 1896 house YOU SHOULD KNOW

SHOREVIEW — The historical society has found a fitting home — a farmhouse built in 1896 long before pavement and stoplights made their way into the city.

The Lepak/Larson historical house located by Turtle Lake Elementary became vacant last year when the Housing Resource Center closed. The house was its office for over a decade.

The city had purchased the property in 2000 from the American Cancer Association, to which longtime owner Art Larson had donated it when he passed away in 1999.

The upper level now houses the Shoreview Historical Society and the city plans to make the lower level into a museum, said City Administrator Terry Schwerm. There is an area for society board meetings and archival space.

Historical society documents have been stored in various locations over the years — including board members’ homes, storage units and the Snail Lake Education Center. “They are hoping to consolidate a lot of those records here,” Schwerm noted.

The society hopes to use the area as a workspace to bring its archives into the digital era, said President Jacci Krebsbach. “We have really never had a place that we can work from,” she noted. She hopes to get students from Mounds View High School involved in volunteer work to scan photos and documents to make them available to people online.

With the advent of Ancestry.com, more and more people have been coming to the Shoreview Historical Society looking for information on their family history, Krebsbach said.

can tell someone exactly where the information is and how to fi nd it — not that it is probably somewhere in a storage unit or someone’s basement.

Krebsbach hopes having a place will also motivate locals to donate or lend items from their personal collections to the society for record keeping.

“We just don’t want things to die in people’s basements,” she noted. The society was recently given a large amount of information on the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant that was located in Arden Hills.

Krebsbach, who has been part of the society for almost 30 years, hopes the house will be a way to organize and pass on the city’s history to the next generation. She imagines a map out-

lining all the farms that used to be in Shoreview so residents can learn who used to live where they do now.

A summer intern has been helping the city plan how to make the lower level of the house into a public museum. Bridget Jensen, a Twin Cities resident and recent history graduate from Truman State University in Missouri, has been researching which era would be the most appropriate and achievable to which to restore the museum portion of the house. The house will likely be restored to either the 1930s era, when it was purchased

by Larson, or the post-war era, when Shoreview was incorporated as a village. She will present her report to the City Council this fall.

The goal of the museum would be to tell the home’s history and use it as a model to tell the history of Shoreview, Jensen said. The Shoreview Community Foundation provided a $5,000 grant to help launch the home into its newest role as a public history center.

The house is located next to the restored 1920s Guerin Gas station, which was placed on site by the Shoreview Historical Society and city about five years ago. It was originally located at Rice Street and Owasso Boulevard and used hand-operated visible pumps back when gas was 14 cents a gallon. The gas station and house together have created a city heritage center.

“This has kind of become our historic park,” Schwerm said.

The house is situated at 1170 Lepak Court, near County Road I and Lexington Avenue. Built for August and Henriette Lepak, the homestead was constructed of Chaska bricks brought by train from the west metro and carted from Cardigan Junction, located 5 miles to the southeast. The Lepaks had three children and farmed the 130-acre property until 1908. Six owners came and went until Art and Edna Larson purchased it in 1935 and stayed until their deaths. The farm originally had a barn, chicken coop, granary and garage. Over the years, Larson sold portions of the land.

STILLWATER — Weekends can be busy on the St. Croix River, but Friday mornings are usually quiet and serene. That’s when Kerri Kolstad leads her Herons and History kayak tours, which aim to show visitors and locals alike another side to Stillwater’s rich natural resources and history.

As kayakers paddle out toward the center of the river, the calm water echoes with the rattling, otherworldly cries of the great blue herons, great egrets and double-crested cormorants that make their summer homes here.

Cormorants, egrets and herons are colonial nesters, which means they nest in close proximity to other birds for common protection. The island just north of Stillwater’s downtown provides protection from most predatory land mammals, which makes it an ideal nesting site.

By late summer, most young birds have already left the nest, but can still be found hanging around the rookery.

These birds are large and easy to see and hear, but careful observers will also notice sunning turtles, darting bank swallows and hovering turkey vultures, bald eagles and ospreys aplenty,

just in this short stretch north of Stillwater.

The Herons and History tour also covers some of the lumber history of the St. Croix River, with a river view of the Boom Site. The site was a historical workers’ camp, where workers called “river pigs” or “boom rats” were housed while they worked on sorting and guiding logs from upriver to sawmills downstream. Like cattle, the logs were marked with brands that showed what company the lumber belonged to and where it was destined.

A major log jam in Taylors Falls in 1886 nearly caused the fi nancial ruin of Stillwater and other communities that relied on the logging industry.

It was eventually cleared with dynamite after 57 days.

Beneath the onsite structure was a large cave, which can be easily seen from the riverway or visited from the Boom Site wayside stop. The cave was used for cold storage of provisions for the camp. The cook was often the highest-paid worker, which kept the other workers happy due to a large selection and quantity of good food.

The Herons and History tours are held every Friday at 8:30 a.m. beginning in May. Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome. Tickets are $75 per person. The tours are part of Kolstad’s White

It’s been an exciting ending to the summer with a few nice rainfalls and even some high winds. We’ll come up a little short of normal for rainfall this past August but overall it has been a wet summer. We really haven’t much in the way of severe weather not only here in the Twin Cities but outstate as well.

It seems the number of thunderstorms and tornadoes are well down this year and instead have been replaced with heavy rainfalls. I keep hearing more about flooding causing damage instead of high winds. Nature Note: Friend Sandy has noticed more acorns than usual. She’s wondering if that means a colder or warmer winter. I’m forecasting a warmer winter, she’s thinking colder. Check back in the spring.

Male chest lump nothing to be ‘nonchalant’ about

For two years, Hugo resident Kirk Possehl wondered about a lump in his chest.

“I found a lump in my chest and went to the doctor and the doctor left it in me for two years,” Possehl remembered.

“They didn’t think of cancer. If I was a woman, I would have been in for a mammogram the next day.”

Possehl brought up the lump topic four or five times to his doctor for two years before she finally asked if he wanted it taken out. Sure, he said. The surgery felt very “nonchalant,” as he remembers.

He was surprised when the surgeon called him with bad news — he had breast cancer. He switched doctors. Possehl went through a mastectomy and radiation therapy and was found free of cancer about two years ago.

The treatment is exactly the same as for breast cancer in women, said Dr. Puneet Cheema, an oncologist who saw Possehl at HealthEast Cancer Care at St. John’s in Maplewood. But it is much less common.

He has seen fewer than 10 male breast cancer patients over his 16-year career as an oncologist.

Only about 1 in 1,000 men get breast cancer and only 1 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are in men, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. A family history of male breast cancer can put someone at higher risk, specifi cally a BRCA2 gene mutation, Cheema said.

This March, Possehl was shocked again when he found another lump. “For a man to get a relapse on it or have it show up again is another less than 1 percent,” Possehl noted.

He had just had his two-year check-up three weeks prior and nothing had been found from a physical examination

and blood tests. He credits fi nding the lump as a “God moment” when he put his hand on his chest and just felt something weird.

He returned to HealthEast Cancer Care, where doctors found the cancer in scar tissue. He went through surgery and radiation again. He had his last radiation follow-up this month.

“So far, so good,” he said. He will continue to have checkups for several years.

Possehl is now on a personal campaign to raise awareness about male breast cancer by not being shy about it.

He said men should bring up anything of concern to their doctors.

“Go get things checked,” he said. “Ninety-nine percent of the time it is nothing, but just get it checked. This is how you save your life.”

Cheema concurs: “If you see something or you feel something, you should say something.”

It is easy for men to do self-examinations of their breast tissue since they are small, he added.

While fatty benign tumors can occur in men of any age and young men can experience temporary lumps due to hormonal changes, any lump should be checked out, he noted.

Possehl said he has spoken to many people who do not even realize men can get breast cancer. “I want to help other people,” he noted.

“I know that’s why I’m here.”

After going through cancer, Possehl went into the insurance business because he wants to help people prepare for the unexpected. His passion is life insurance. “You never know when that call is going to come,” he noted. “As soon as that call comes, you become uninsurable or really expensive. Do it before that happens.” He only wishes his younger self could take his older self’s advice and he could leave behind

something beyond burial expenses — “I had really crappy life insurance,” he remarked.

Possehl is known in the northeast metro community for his sports announcer work at White Bear Lake Area Schools, Mounds View Schools, Hill Murray and the University of Minnesota. He has an 18-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. He is active at Eagle Brook Church and credits his faith in God for helping him face the difficulties of being among the 1 percent of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

His yellow Lab, Goldy, has been his “rock” through two rounds of breast cancer treatment. “Goldy has stuck with me through thick and thin,” he said. His new wife helped him get through the second round.

DETECTING MALE BREAST CANCER Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola. Men have a higher mortality rate than women do, primarily due to less awareness that the lump could be breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment. Breast self-exams should be performed once a month. Here are three ways to self-examine for breast cancer (for men and women): • In the shower: Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your health care provider.

• In front of a mirror: Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead. Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side.

• Lying down: When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Use light, medium and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

Nonprofi t gives veterans something to look forward to

Lino Lakes resident Jim Flermoen was just like most boys as he grew up: he enjoyed fishing with his dad. After a combat wound and 12 years in the military, he once again found himself fi shing.

Flermoen and two other veterans, Eric Anderson and Joe Scavo, started the Freedom Fishing Foundation in March 2017. The foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps veterans, Gold Star families and children of veterans who have committed suicide or died in combat find peace and tranquility through the sport of fi shing.

Flermoen served in the Minnesota Army National Guard for 12 years. He was deployed to Iraq from 20052007. In May 2007 his military career came to a halt when he was wounded in combat by an improvised explosive device (IED). He tried to stay in the military but after some time he was forced to medically retire.

He was hoping to make it to 20 years of service to his country.

In 2010, Flermoen realized he wanted to get back to fishing. He bought a boat.

“I found out how therapeutic it was. After I got home, I was in pretty rough shape ... I didn’t want to do anything, I didn’t want to leave my house. I really struggled,” he said.

“When I started fi shing, that was a whole different world for me. It really changed my life. It gave me something I could enjoy. If I was having a bad day or was struggling with something, I could go out and fish and it would help me reset. I would come back in a better mood.”

Flermoen knew the wonders fishing had done for him, so when he had friends reach out who were having similar struggles, he introduced them to the sport. “When guys I knew would call me and they were struggling with something, I would hook up the boat, go get them and say, ‘Let’s go fish.’ Every person I brought out had a positive experience and it helped them.”

Although he came up with the idea for the nonprofi t years before it became a reality, he really needed

some help to get things started. That is where Eric Anderson came in. “I had been trying to get him to come out (fishing) with me for years and after the first time, he realized how benefi cial, therapeutic and peaceful it was and told me he would help me start (the foundation),” Flermoen recalled.

This summer is the fi rst season Freedom Fishing Foundation volunteers have brought veterans out to fish. Flermoen said they typically go out one to three times a week. In addition to picking up a couple of veterans from the Eagle’s Healing Nest in Anoka once a week, the organization has also brought along other veterans who have reached out to the organization through mutual contacts and social media.

Freedom Fishing Foundation will go wherever is convenient for the veteran. They can either meet the veteran somewhere, or even pick them up. So far,

veterans have fi shed on Forest Lake, Bald Eagle Lake, Rush Lake, Lake George, Prior Lake and Eagle Lake.

The organization also pays for everything, including a fishing license (if needed), a meal, beverages and snacks, and furnishes all of the necessary gear.

Blaine resident Mike Anderson, Eric Anderson’s brother, served on active duty in the Army for 23 years. He recently went on a trip with the foundation on Rush Lake, after his brother convinced him to give it a try.

Even though Mike spent many years in North Carolina and made many visits to Myrtle Beach, he said he didn’t do much fishing. All the moving around with the military made it hard to go, he noted.

“It was a great experience. I would defi nitely recommend it,” Mike said. “It was a good escape. I knew it would be cool, but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. It wasn’t old-school fishing where you just wait for a bobber to go down; I probably cast 400 to 500 times. It was constant.”

Mike plans to fish again. He’s even considering buying a boat.

In the future, Flermoen hopes to partner with resorts in northern Minnesota, to take veterans on two- to three-day trips. It is also his dream to one day have a fleet of boats around the state, with fi shing guides who are all veterans themselves.

“Our goal is to show veterans a day of enjoyment and show them there are healthy ways to enjoy life.

We want to get them out of their house, out of their everyday routine that might be hard for them,” Flermoen said. “If some of them are really struggling, hopefully we can show them a healthy hobby. We are not therapists in any way, but in our experiences Mother Nature has been one of the best therapies for us.”
