SHOREVIEW — The city was declared a pollinator-friendly city by the City Council last month — endorsing pollinator protection and promoting pollinator habitat. Pollinators include bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, bird and bats, said Public Works Director Mark Maloney at a City Council meeting Sept. 17. About 80 percent of flowering plants rely on animal pollination, he added, citing U.S. government statistics. Pollinators add a $24 billion value to the U.S. economy. “A lot of the food that is grown requires pollinators,” Maloney said. About 30 percent of the country’s bee colonies have been lost over the last 12 years. “There are sharp declines in native pollinator populations,” Maloney said. The Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee has been looking at what the city can do to support pollinators over the last couple years. The Wave Cafe area was renovated to include more seating and a more modern look.
SHOREVIEW — Besides the new pool area, most of the renovations and additions to the Shoreview Community Center have been completed. The Tropical Adventures indoor playground reopened to the public last month. It about doubled in size with a new area geared for younger children, said Alisha Seifert, city communications coordinator. There is a new treehouse, climbing wall, bouncers, slides, giant ball pit, foam blocks and birthday party area. The parent seating area is also four times bigger, she noted. beck brought her 2-, 4- and 6-year-old to the playground a few days after it reopened Sept. 21. She has been a community center member for five years. “Our big kids always had a blast, but the toddler section was small,” she remembered while watching from the parent seating area. “My 2-yearold can be more adventurous but still age-appropriate. … We will be here a lot.” The playground has a new entrance in the new addition in the northwest portion of the community center, in the lower level. The former entrance was through a busy gymnasium. SEE COMMUNITY CENTER, PAGE 9
