Pumpkin competition blossoms into yearly tradition

Union Gospel site redevelopment concept spurs opposition

Over a dozen people showed up to a recent City Council meeting regarding the development of the former 18.44-acre Union Gospel Mission site located south of Highway 96 and east of Snail Lake.

Economic Development Coordinator Niki Hill gave a presentation on the planned unit development (PUD) concept-stage application submitted by UrbanWorks Architecture LLC on behalf of the property owner, Tycon Companies. The proposal requests a change in the previously approved PUD with an underlying zoning of institutional to a new zoning of PUD with a mixed-use designation.

“The concept review process incorporates public review, (and) allows the applicant to receive comments regarding the proposed development from the city and nearby property owners,” Hill said. “It provides a forum in which more specific development issues and potential concerns can be identified. No formal action is taken during the concept stage review by the City Council or Planning Commission.”

The proposed mixed-residential development includes a market-rate apartment building located on the north portion of the property, designed as a 268unit, five-level apartment building. Parking

Every year, a father and son try to outdo each other in weight — that is, when it comes to growing pumpkins.

For the past five years, Hugo resident Jeff LeClair has tried

to grow a pumpkin that not only beats his previous year’s pumpkin, but eventually his father Mark LeClair’s pumpkin.

Mark has been honing his pumpkin growing skills for quite some time, but son Jeff said he hopes it eventually gets to the point where “the student can

outteach the teacher.”

Mark, a Maplewood resident, started growing pumpkins back in 2001 as part of a contest with his brother-in-law to see who could grow the largest pumpkin.

“It has just grown from there,” Mark explained.

Q. What inspired you to write this book?

A. I was invited and formally commissioned by the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) to write this book.

GIANT PUMPKINS: Son tries to squash father’s record FROM PAGE 1

A couple years in, Mark was having a problem with a disease affecting his pumpkins, so he reached out to the St. Croix Growers Association. Intrigued by their helpfulness and kindness, Mark decided to join the club, and has been an active member ever since. He volunteers at the club’s annual Stillwater Harvest Fest.

Jeff was always a bit fascinated by his father’s growing skills, but didn’t have the opportunity to join in the fun until he purchased his own home and had space to make a garden. He also thought it would be a way to make his dad proud.

“Life gets so busy, that sometimes you need things like this to keep the connection,” Jeff explained. “That’s the most important thing, keeping a strong relationship with my dad. He did HVAC work and I manage a grocery store, so this gives us something in common that we can talk about.”

Mark added, “It’s really cool that my son took an interest in this. Any time you can spend time with family, it is great.”

This year, Mark broke his record for the largest pumpkin yet, but he fell just short of his goal of 1,000 pounds. “I want to break that 1,000 (pound) mark.

That’s one of my goals before I move on,” he explained.

Two years ago, Mark grew a 954-pound pumpkin, and this year one of his pumpkins weighed in at 985 pounds.

Jeff also beat his record set last year at 618 pounds. His pumpkins weighed in at 702 pounds and 594 pounds.

“Every year I’m improving and learning from some of my mistakes. Each year we try something different, whether it is a different kind of fertilizer, a different breed of seed,” Jeff explained. “My goal for every season is I just want to beat

the previous weight from the previous year.”

Although Mark and Jeff use the exact same seeds, they often have very different experiences each growing season. Mark begins growing the pumpkins indoors in late March or early April and then in May, depending on weather, the plants are transported into their outdoor gardens.

This year, Jeff suffered a setback. There was a late freeze; despite being covered, his plants were still damaged, so he had to start from scratch.

Jeff couldn’t help but think how much bigger his pumpkins could have grown if he wasn’t three weeks behind schedule.

Mark recalled a year where pea-size hail damaged his crop.

Over the years, he has had several deer jump fences to graze on his pumpkins.

Jeff said he hasn’t had too many issues with deer because of the 7-foot fence he puts up around his garden, but he has had issues with rabbits —

a problem he solved with the addition of chicken wire.

“If you start your pumpkins in the middle of April, if you can make it to the middle of October, no matter how big your pumpkin is, that’s a feat all by itself,” Jeff said.

Mark may have a little bit more of an edge in the competition because he is retired and has more time to “baby” his plants. “You can see it. We both used the same seed, and he was able to grow (a nearly) 1000-pound pumpkin,” Jeff explained. “I have two young kids that are my priority, so the pumpkins kind of get put on the back burner.”

Another challenge is space limitations. Both of them have a limited garden size. Jeff said if it were up to him, his whole backyard would be dedicated to pumpkin growing.

Even though it is a competition, Jeff and Mark both help each other whenever needed.

They especially rely on each other when it is time to weigh and display the pumpkins.

That’s where the “poor man’s lift” (as Mark calls it) comes in.

Because Jeff and Mark both live in residential areas, they can’t rely on tractors to help move the pumpkins. Several years ago, Mark created a tripod with an electric winch, cables, pulleys, seatbelts and wood. Mark said the lift could likely lift up to 2,000 pounds.

Most years, Mark takes his pumpkins to the Harvest Festival before displaying them in his front yard. Jeff has also taken his pumpkins to the Harvest Festival, but did not do that this year. The giant pumpkins have become an integral part of their front yard decorations.

“The kids in the neighborhood get a huge kick out of it,” Jeff said. “I have had kids come up to me who remember last year’s weight … Everyone is always looking for the big pumpkins and

wondering how big they got this year.”

Mark added, “I put them at the end of driveway for Halloween and the people that come by year after year to take pictures, sit on the pumpkins … They come up to the house and want to know more about them.” Mark also gives out seeds to those who are interested in trying to grow their own pumpkins.

Perhaps next year, Jeff will inch just a little bit closer to Mark’s pumpkins, and Mark will inch a little bit closer (or surpass) the 1,000-pound mark.

“We are a competitive family,” Jeff said. “I want to get to the point where the student can outteach the teacher. I haven’t been able to do that yet, but I’m getting closer.”

Business as usual for monsters

Organizing and executing a large entertainment show complete with over 270 employees, 175 of whom are actors, is no small feat, whether you’re a theater show or a haunted attraction. Rolling out the show during a pandemic is something else entirely. But the show must go on.

Jeremy Hastings, owner of The Dead End Hayride, knows this better than anyone. In 2020, the venue was open and adhering to the state’s COVID restrictions. “We’ve gotten pretty good at keeping groups that come together separated from the other groups,” explained Hastings. “The major hurdle was we had to figure out how we were going to keep the crowd size under the 250 number that the governor set in the queue line.”

On a normal night, the hayride has 1,500 to 2,000 people waiting to get in. The team had adapted “timed ticketing” in 2019, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Keeping the tickets timed to certain slots and groups helped with crowd control.

It also helped keep the show more controlled for the actors, allowing them to perform better.

This year, it’s business as usual for the monsters. “We’ve still adapted some of the changes in 2020, such as the cleaning measures, hand

sanitizing stations; they are all still in play. And we’re still doing timed ticketing. I see that as a real positive for the overall customer experience,” said Hastings. He added that the actors have had extra training this year to ensure the spirit of the Dead End Hayride is still there, and the intensity of the show is just as good, but so the guests feel comfortable with any interactions.

A big-thinking entrepreneur by nature, Hastings admits he and his team had big ambitions this year, including a goal of adding a new prison set to the haunted attraction.

Complete with a full-sized prison bus, Hastings hired and trained 25 actors alone for the new set. This team takes its show and acting seriously: actors try out for parts in late summer.

“For actors, we’re really looking for someone who can come out of their shell for a little bit,” said Hastings, “and who doesn’t feel self-conscious playing a role that they normally wouldn’t play in their normal life.”

The actors are just one part of the show, as Hastings has a full-size “monster barn” on site that houses the costumers and the make-up artists. “We currently have seven makeup artists,” explains Hastings, “and on the costuming side of things, we lean on our middle-level acting managers to help people get into their costumes. It’s a group effort.”

The Dead End Hayride is up and running despite the ongoing pandemic. The popular fall attraction based in Wyoming runs through Halloween.

The team was pleasantly surprised to see the public come out in droves on the venue’s fi rst opening weekend on the fi rst Saturday in October. The crew was expecting around 500, and instead got 3,300. On Sunday, they had over 1,700 people come through, higher numbers for a Sunday than they’ve ever seen except during an MEA weekend.

Hastings said while the numbers are encouraging, his favorite part of this season is that he can reinstate the employee “thank you” events,

which he couldn’t hold last year due to COVID. “We believe in the idea that if you aren’t making friends with your coworkers, then this is just a job.

But it’s the people that you surround yourself with at the job that makes it fun.”

Hastings added, “I’m thankful we have such a dedicated staff as we do.

Our staff bonfi res and parties, those are the things I’m most excited about this year.”

Fall travels

ur family scattered in different directions over MEA weekend. Our son went to Washington, D.C. with the eighth–grade trip that had been postponed in the spring. My wife and daughter headed to New York City for a senior year girls’ weekend. I headed north with long-time friends for an annual fall fishing trip on Lake Vermilion. The walleyes were nearly jumping in the boat, but the Muskies were nowhere to be seen. We also did a grouse hunt and some trap shooting, and evenings were fi lled with lively conversation, fish frys and camp fi res.

Publisher’s We all converged back at home on Sunday afternoon and discussed over View dinner the highlights of everyone’s Carter Johnson weekend. Kellen was with a 100 high school kids on a whirlwind three days of touring all of the major historical sites, museums and monuments in and around the nation’s Capitol. It was Kellen’s first trip without parents and he stayed in a hotel room with three buddies. He said highlights were seeing Mount Vernon and standing with Secret Service agents on a bridge as they watched the President take off in the Marine One helicopter.

He also reported extensively about the various establishments they went to for lunch and dinner. It seemed the trip was as much fun as it was educational.

Amy and Abbey came home exhausted from miles of walking around NYC. They explored the neighborhoods of SoHo, Greenwich Village, and Chelsea on foot, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and found a few famous bakeries to try. Abbey had researched a brand-new attraction that had just opened that weekend, Summit One Vanderbilt. It is an observation deck with three floors constructed entirely of glass and mirrors near the top of a 1,401 foot tall building. They said the attraction and the views were spectacular.

They also toured the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. We had visited the memorial years ago, but at that time only the outdoor area had been completed. Amy said the museum is very well-done. They spent a couple of hours going through it and said they could have spent all day there. I have heard about the memorial’s impact on visitors, and they agreed it was emotional.

She commented that it brought back memories of how after the attack, our nation came together. Following that tragedy 20 years ago, people generally set aside their differences and we were united in supporting our country, our elected leaders and each other – a stark contrast compared to the division we see among Americans today.

We need to come together like that again. The pandemic certainly didn’t bring us together-it added more divisive issues. Right now, we see the extreme partisanship and vitriol in our local elections for city council and school board. All sides are responsible.

There are definitely important issues to be discussed and decided, but most of us seem to refuse to listen to anyone who has a differing opinion from our own.

This is bad for democracy even on a local level. Our elected officials should represent a variety of views and ideologies be able to come together to make the best decisions that are in the best interest of all residents.

I hope we will go to the polls and vote. More than ever, our communities need you to help choose the next school board members, city council members, and mayors who will lead our communities. Take time to read our candidate profi les with an open mind to learn about the candidates and make an informed decision about who you believe will be the best to carry our cities and schools forward. If you’re not quite sure who to vote for, consider reaching out to candidates by phone or email and spending some time to talk through key issues. It is unlikely you’re going to agree 100% with every candidate, but you need to choose those you think will make the right decisions – even if parts of their stance are out of your comfort zone. Your vote counts, so get out to vote and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to do the same. We need to work together to move forward in a positive direction. We like our first amendment rights – whatever they are

mericans deeply value their First Amendment rights to freely worship and to freely voice their views, but we are deeply divided on how to apply and regulate those freedoms, a newly released survey discloses.

Therein is the 21st century challenge: Balancing long-protected freedoms against shortcuts through the First Amendment in the name of combatting society’s ills or protecting individual beliefs.

“The First Amendment: Where America Stands” is a survey commissioned by the nonpartisan Freedom Forum.

The survey sampled a representative group of more than 3,000 Movers & Americans on their attitudes Shakers and values about Gene Policinski the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

For those who see these five freedoms as essential to democracy, there are welcome results in the survey: 94% of respondents see the First Amendment as vital and 63% would keep the 45 words of the amendment as adopted in 1791.

But — no surprise in our polarized society — 23% of all those polled would make some changes.

A smaller group, 15% of respondents, said our core freedoms go too far.

The results reflect a time when Americans are much more active in testing both the protections of and limits on our freedoms.

For example, 36% percent of us would add new limits on free speech to battle “hate speech” — raising the deep challenge that what some see as hateful speech may be seen by others as simply

the expression of a deeply held view or belief.

Some results may forecast a lessening of support for the five freedoms: 45% of people say they have not expressed an opinion for fear of negative reaction, with younger Americans more likely to say they have self-censored.

The survey found 49% never have shared a political opinion on social media. Just three percent say the right of petition — to publicly seek change in government policies or laws — is the First Amendment freedom they value most; 69% of us never have participated in a rally, protest or march.

In an echo of Freedom Forum surveys since 1997, the new “Where America Stands” found many of us lack fundamental understanding of the First Amendment. About one in five (18%) couldn’t name one freedom in the amendment. Of those who could name at least one: 78% could identify free speech, followed by 49% naming religion, 39% assembly, 34% free press and 14% the right of petition. Just nine percent correctly identified all five.

Some findings are more in the vein of wishful thinking than practical suggestions — which doesn’t mean we should ignore the sentiments. The survey found that 72% would outlaw political ads that “misrepresent the truth.” In an era of constant battles with misinformation, particularly online, that’s certainly a worthy goal. But the sentiment raises a multitude of conflicting questions: What is “truth?” How can we apply such laws without raising the specter of partisan censorship?

Then there is public opinion regarding a free press. A majority — 58% — see the news media as an essential watchdog on government, one of the core reasons the nation’s founders provided such strong protection for independent journalism — even the highly partisan newspapers and journals

of their time.

But only 14% of respondents expressed strong trust in the news media of today, with public broadcasting rated highest. The survey also confirmed widespread polling in recent years that shows a majority of us live in so-called “news bubbles” — just 38% of respondents look to news outlets with different perspectives than their own.

More than two-thirds of those responding to the survey (69%) said social media companies should be responsible for what’s posted on their sites. But that desire raises the likelihood that in holding Twitter, Facebook and others accountable we will prompt much tighter restrictions by those companies on what we are able to post — with some predicting the death of social media as we know it — and the installation of cumbersome government regulations and processes.

More than any other, that social media quandary typifies the survey findings. New technologies and deep political and social divides challenge our traditional shared notions of freedoms. We have heavy debate and momentous decisions ahead.

But the survey shows far too many of us lack basic knowledge about the First Amendment to debate and decide in an informed way.

When it comes to our core freedoms, “ignorance is not bliss,” particularly when combined with fear and lack of engagement that can drive hasty actions and prompt political opportunists.

Ignorance about our rights is dangerous for democracy.

All Hands On Hope event set in Shoreview

Rep. Kelly Moller: Up to the task!

Thanks to support from Rep. Kelly Moller, the Energy and Transportation bills passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives included the most aggressive actions on the climate crisis ever. The Energy bill would have put us on a path to 100% clean electricity by 2040, similar to what President Biden is pushing at the federal level. The Transportation bill would have provided more choices for travelers over the next 10 years, including a comprehensive network of bus rapid transit (BRT) lines across the metro area.

While climate deniers in the Minnesota Senate were able to block the strongest actions, Rep. Moller and her House allies still found ways to make progress, including funding for Solar on Schools, energy efficiency and workforce development toward clean energy jobs. They also secured $67 million for expanding transit, including providing the local match to get federal funding that otherwise would have gone to other states.

The U.S. military calls the climate crisis a “threat multiplier”— making everything that’s bad, worse: drought, wildfi res, downpours and flash floods, flooding of coastal cities and essential estuaries, pests affecting crops and animal health including ours, human and animal forced migration, and conflicts of all kinds.

Taking the strong and quick action needed to address the climate crisis is the biggest challenge we face. Rep. Kelly Moller is up to the task!

SHOREVIEW – Incarnation Lutheran Church will host All Hands On Hope Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview.

This is the 14th Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event. The goal this year is for 2,810 volunteers to pack 614,304 meals, which will feed 1,683 children around the world for one year. Meals will be packed on site at Incarnation Lutheran Church and loaded into a semitrailer parked at the church throughout the packing weekend. From there, the meals will travel and be distributed through FMSC partners located in 70 countries across the globe.

Since the church hosted its fi rst FMSC MobilePack in 2007, more than 27,000 people have volunteered to pack Feed My Starving Children meals during 13 FMSC MobilePacks.

Over 7.5 million meals have been packed and sent to feed hungry children across the globe through Incarnation’s annual pack. In April of 2021, FMSC partnered with Incarnation to host a trial packing event to help them prepare for new configurations and practices required to ensure safety for all involved as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. All those practices will be

in place during this MobilePack.

The public is invited to sign up in advance to pack meals at this free event. Food-packing takes place in two-hour shifts, with adults and children (age 5 and up) fi lling and sealing bags at work stations. Volunteers are organized in packing stations that can accommodate up to 10 people. If you register with fewer than 10 people, you may be contacted by a volunteer coordinator to determine if you are comfortable packing with additional volunteers at your station; if you have more than 10 in your group, you will be split into two packing stations with effort made to assign your group to adjacent stations.

Incarnation is requiring all volunteers to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status.

Press Publications welcomes new staff writer Corinne Stremmel is the newest staff writer here at Press Publications.

Originally from Brookings, South Dakota, Stremmel found herself in Minnesota after deciding to attend Gustavus Adolphus College where she majored in English and Communications. Stremmel was editor-in-chief of her college newspaper “The Gustavian Weekly” and wrote for Gustavus’ alumni magazine, “the Gustavus Quarterly.” She has held internships with the “Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine” and “605 Magazine.” After graduating college last spring, she moved to Minneapolis to Corinne Stremmel pursue a career in journalism.

Writers in Minnesota write book on pandemic SHOREVIEW — Ramsey County Library and the Friends of the Ramsey County Libraries announced the publication of “This Was 2020: Minnesotans Write About Pandemics and Social Justice in a Historic Year.”

Edited by Ramsey County Library staff and featuring 51 writers from across Minnesota, “This Was 2020” captures people’s experiences and reflections of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and Justice for George Floyd movement along with other social and political upheavals of the year.

This collection of writing encourages Minnesotans to write and reflect on a tumultuous year as a way to learn from, heal, and imagine brighter futures for all.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce reported the following selected incidents in Shoreview: • A St. Paul woman, 24, was arrested for DWI at 12:34 a.m. Oct. 3 in the 4200 block of Snail Lake Blvd., following a report of a vehicle driving on fl at tires.

• A St. Paul man, 19, was cited Oct. 3 on Lexington Avenue N. and Tanglewood Drive for driving after suspension and failure to provide proof of insurance. A valid driver was summoned to drive the vehicle home from the traffic stop.

• A golf cart was reported stolen Oct. 3 from an underground garage at Edison at Rice Creek in the 5800 block of Rice Creek Parkway. The suspect vehicle was seen entering the open garage door by following another vehicle and exiting with the golf cart shortly afterward.

After the golf cart was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, it was recovered by the Mounds View Police Department on Oct. 7.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen overnight Oct. 3-4 from a Ford Econoline parked in a driveway in the 1700 block of Hillview Road.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies recovered a stolen license plate Oct. 5 in the 3200 block of Park Overlook Drive after a suspicious vehicle was reported parked on the complainant’s street after midnight with a frantic male transferring items to an unknown vehicle. The plates were registered to a vehicle stolen out of St. Paul, and the vehicle was registered to a dealership in Austin.

• Deputies assisted the Minnesota State Patrol in pursuing a vehicle that fled from a felony traffic stop at 11:04 p.m. Oct. 5 on County Road I at I-35W and continued south along I-35W. The chase lasted seven minutes and covered 11 miles, resulting in the arrest of two adult males, after stop sticks and PIT maneuvers were executed.

• A juvenile was arrested Oct. 5 in the 500 block of Cardigan Road for causing approximately $30,000 in damage to property at Lionsgate Academy. The student broke a window, water pipe and classroom equipment. After he was sent to the Juvenile Detention Center, a report was sent to the county attorney for consideration of charges.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen Oct. 6 from a Ford Econoline belonging to Youth Investment Foundation of Medina as it was parked in a church parking lot in the 3900 block of Victoria Street N. • An Albertville man on Oct. 7 reported $3,000 fraudulently withdrawn from his account at a Shoreview bank in the 1000 block of Highway 96. The fraud started when the victim lost his wallet in St. Paul and before he fi led a report for credit card fraud in Maplewood. The case is under investigation.

• A Mounds View woman reported a purse stolen from her vehicle Oct. 7 as it was parked in the 1900 block of County Road I after the trunk window was shattered for access. Credit cards from the stolen purse were used at the Shoreview Target by two suspects.

• A resident in the 1500 block of Hall Street reported his neighbor for breaking into his home Oct. 7. No property has been reported missing.

• A wallet belonging to a Farmington man was reported found Oct. 7 in the 4100 block of Rustic Place.

• A Minneapolis woman reported miscellaneous clothing and a backpack stolen Oct. 7 from a vehicle parked in an employee lot in the 500 block of Highway 96. A passenger window was broken in for access.

• A resident in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported items missing from her apartment Oct. 7. With no signs of forced entry, the complainant said she believed someone had access to her unit.

• A Mahtomedi woman reported her vehicle stolen at gunpoint Oct. 8 in the 100 block of Grass Lake Place. The complainant was able to recover her phone before the vehicle was taken, but left her purse in the car. Her credit cards have been canceled. The victim was able to provide a detailed description of the assailant, and the case is now under investigation.

• An unoccupied vehicle stolen from a South St. Paul woman was recovered at 4:11 a.m. Oct. 9 on I-694 between Victoria and Rice Streets.

• A vehicle key was reported stolen Oct. 11 from the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. after the complainant let an unknown male stay at the apartment. Deputies advised that the complainant get the vehicle rekeyed at a dealership.

• A resident in the 100 block of Grass Lake Place reported the driver’s side window of his vehicle smashed in overnight Oct. 9-10. The complainant is in the process of canceling his credit cards, because a wallet was taken from the center console during the crime.

• A vehicle was reported for rear-ending a school bus at 1:36 p.m. Oct. 11 on Lexington Avenue N. and County Road E as the bus was conducting a safety check for trains at a railroad crossing.

The accident resulted in minor damage to the driver’s vehicle and no injuries to the five children aboard the bus.

• A Little Canada man, 31, and a St. Paul woman, 37, were cited at 4:18 p.m. Oct. 11 for threatening six juveniles with a knife as they tried to enter a convenience store in the 3900 block of Rice Street to buy snacks. After a Keep Our Kops Safe alert was issued, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the subjects a short time later.

• An Anoka man, 29, was banned from a fitness center in the 1000 block of Highway 96 at 4:40 a.m. Oct. 12 after he was caught working out without a membership at the establishment and refused to leave.

• Hummingbird Floral and Gifts in the 4000 block of Rice Street reported a scam caller Oct. 12 who ordered floral arrangements and iTune gift cards to be delivered for relatives in the area. The caller’s credit card purchase was approved, so the business purchased the gift cards. Upon delivery, the local resident to

receive the items said she had never heard of the sender. The business lost $800.

• A 31-year-old Aurora, Illinois, woman was arrested for second-degree DUI Oct. 12 on southbound Hodgson Road and County Road I following a complaint of an intoxicated driver.

The subject has been charged in Ramsey County Court.

• The Speedway store in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway reported a subject for distracting a clerk on Oct. 12 and grabbing two cartons of cigarettes off the counter before fleeing.

• Management of Carew Properties in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported multiple mailbox thefts overnight Oct. 12-13 after video surveillance showed a male breaking into mailboxes and stealing mail.

• Deputies collected miscellaneous ammunition found by a citizen in the 5600 block of Royal Oaks Drive Oct. 14.

• A resident in the 4200 block of Victoria Court reported receiving scam phone calls Oct. 14 from a person impersonating the Ramsey County Sheriff and claiming a false warrant on the complainant. Although the complainant recognized the scam, the calls continued.

Real deputies called the scammer back; the scammer hung up on them. Later, deputies themselves received a threatening text. No money was lost by either the complainant or deputies.

• A Shoreview man reported his rear license plate stolen in the 1300 block of Meadow Avenue Oct. 14 after he left work the previous day when Roseville police pointed it out to him during a traffic stop for a missing license plate.

• A homeless Anoka man, 29, was banned Oct. 15 from an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N., following complaints about his sleeping in the stairwell of the building.

• A Spring Lake Park woman reported an attempted check fraud Oct. 15 after a drivethru teller in the 1000 block of Highway 96 recognized potential fraud and alerted the complainant. The alleged thief fled the scene.

• Deputies recovered a set of keys for a Porsche Oct. 15 in the area of Rice Street and I-694 and placed them into property. The keys may be linked to a carjacking in that area a few days prior.

• A satchel and five pairs of sunglasses were reported stolen Oct. 16 from an unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 500 block of Elaine Avenue.

• A Canyon man reported a jacket stolen Oct. 16 from the back seat of an unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 5600 block of Heather Ridge Drive while he was in town for a visit.

• A Madison, Wisconsin, man reported job site keys stolen from his work vehicle parked at a construction site in the 400 block of Catherine Lane after it was rummaged through sometime over the weekend of Oct. 16-18.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF BRIEFS Driving on flat tires gives away intoxicated driver A St. Paul woman, 24, faces up to one year in prison and/or a maximum $3,000 fi ne for third-degree DWI, as well as an additional 90 days in prison and/or a maximum $1,000 fi ne for fourth-degree DWI. On Oct. 3, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a vehicle driving with flat tires around the area of Snail Lake Park and entering residential driveways.

When deputies encountered the subject in the park after hours, they noticed an odor of alcoholic bever-

age coming from her, along with her bloodshot, watery eyes. The driver admitted to drinking and, indeed, an empty bottle of apple-flavored Jack Daniels was discovered on the floor of the vehicle.

The subject performed poorly on all the field sobriety tests, including the horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk and turn, and one-leg stand. Her blood alcohol content from the portable breath test was nearly three times the limit, at 0.227.

Swerving vehicle still swerving when deputies catch it An Aurora, Illinois, woman, 32, was arrested for second-degree DUI at approximately 6:57 p.m. Oct. 12 on southbound Hodgson Road and County Road I following a complaint about a Mazda CX swerving all over the road. The witness also reported that the driver yelled at her with slurred speech.

Deputies easily located the vehicle swerving within her lane and crossing over the centerline. During the traffic stop, deputies also easily noted the driver’s slurred speech and could

smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle. Rather than yell at deputies, the driver admitted to drinking and submitted to standard field sobriety tests. She performed poorly on all of them and was taken to jail, where she registered a blood alcohol content of 0.28 on the breath test.

The defendant faces a maximum one year in prison and/or a maximum $3,000 fine for gross misdemeanor DWI. Her sentence could be doubled if convicted of a second count of third-degree DWI with an aggravating factor present. The defendant has a prior DWI conviction from 2014.

AI Grow takes the process out, allows growers to focus on plants

When Chris Ellis was searching for a warehouse facility to develop his indoor grow system, he stumbled across an apple orchard — the rest is history.

“Rent on a warehouse is ridiculously expensive,” Ellis explained. “I was looking around at different properties available, and then this popped up and I asked Shelli, what do you think about getting an orchard?”

The husband and wife visited the property and immediately knew they had to have it. They purchased Applecrest Orchards, located at 7306 24th Ave. N. on the border of Hugo and Lino Lakes, in November 2019. A couple of months later, Chris officially launched his “day job” side of the business, AI Grow.

AI Grow is a new division of Ellis’ company Assured Integration, which he began in Georgia in early 2017. He was traveling a lot for work, mainly to Minnesota and Wisconsin, so the couple eventually decided to relocate to Minnesota.

“The purpose is to perfect the growing environment and make it accessible for all people wanting to grow food or any sort of crops,” Ellis explained. “You take the process out of it. The whole point of automation is so the grower can actually focus on the plant itself and not worry about timing, watering, lights, humidity. What we have found is that every grower has their own secret recipe. They know how to do what they do best.”

Ellis has a team of 10 electrical control engineers, software developers and master growers. The company’s vision is to be the trusted, premier automation and data analytics solution provider in the horticulture industry, offering the best in class automation for customers who want simpler, safer, and more accurate operations resulting in higher efficiency and profitability.

AI Grow offers a broad range of equipment and services ranging from out-of-the-box automation software installations to project-specific customized packages involving the design and construction of electrical and controls hardware, automation software and data reporting.

Applecrest Orchards has been used as a research and development facility to fi nd out what works — and what doesn’t.

“It’s my playroom,” Ellis said. “I’ve literally tried out all these different environment sensors, water flow sensors, pH sensors, every different sensor you can imagine.”

The company has landed its fi rst large job, a 30,000-square-foot greenhouse, currently under construction in Wisconsin, that will grow hemp/ CBD. AI Grow will commission the automation systems at the end of September; the facility is scheduled to open in early October.

The planning, design and layout process has taken well over six months, but the actual install of the system will likely only take about a month.

Ellis said the hemp industry seems to be the business’s target market right now. “Right now, hemp and cannabis is a big topic in Minnesota.

Hemp is legal in every state, so everybody is getting into that for growing for medicinal purposes,” he explained. “I've talked to a lot of these farmers … they could care less about technology. They say, ‘I've been doing it for 40 years this way, I’m not going to change.’ The cannabis industry is really progressive and very open to the new technology.”

AI Grow is licensed with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to be hemp growers.

The fi rst year the business was up and running, Ellis and his colleagues did the growing, but a company called Loon Land Hemp has taken over the growing part under the Applecrest Hemp Collective.

Ellis has already developed a long list of partner companies, or what he calls “alliances.”

“I’m very big on teams and strengths in numbers,” he explained. “The whole point is to try to bring others into this because we were blessed with this, the store, the apple orchard as our venue.”

Some of the companies he has partnerships with include Key Minerals, Industrial Accessories Company (IAC), Eco Garden and Ninepatch Farm.

AI Grow also has two off-the-shelf products it has developed. The Birdhouse environmental sensor, which was created for the greenhouse project, is 3-D printed and houses a light sensor, CO2 sensor and humidity sensor. It hangs right in the where the plants grow.

The second product, the nutrient fertigation system — the process of adding fertilizer along with irrigation water — allows the grower to program unique recipes for their nutrient solutions. Growers can then make their own blends instead of using off-the-shelf nutrient blends. When running a recipe batch, the pumps automatically add precise amounts of specific ingredients along with fresh water to a large solution tank to achieve the grower’s special blend for the plants. “It’s kind of like making your own cake mix instead of buying the pre-boxed mixes at the store,” Ellis explained.

High hopes for Hollywood

Ever since she was a young girl, Michelle Rose has loved performing. She continues to follow her dreams by acting, writing, producing, singing and directing her own music videos — and she’s getting recognition for her work.

“I love music, singing, acting and creating fi lms. It’s been my passion since I was little. I took my fi rst acting class at age 3, and began singing lessons at age 6,” Rose said. “When I was 8, I planned, co-wrote and put on my fi rst 45-minute play in my backyard. I planned all of the scenes, the costumes, characters and props, so it was my fi rst time directing anything.”

Rose, who grew up in Stillwater, started recording her own original songs when she was 12. She attended Stillwater Area High School but then switched gears and went to Minnesota Virtual Academy to focus on her music. She then went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated this year.

“With my music career, I started as just a singer. I started learning piano and guitar; and in college, I took courses in songwriting, composition and music production, as well as videography, because I realized I wanted more knowledge and skills to better bring my own vision to life,” Rose said.

“As I grew, I knew I really wanted to direct my own work and my fi rst time handling most everything was for my song, ‘You’re the Kinda Guy,’ which I did right after graduating high school. I planned and directed pretty much every aspect of the music video, which had a 1950s theme.”

Rose has recorded more than 30 songs and produced 18 music videos. She has submitted some of her work, which has won nominations and awards at a variety of fi lm festivals.

“I haven’t submitted many of my projects yet, but I’ve been honored to have won numerous awards or nominations for everything I’ve submitted, which includes, “You’re the Kinda Guy,” “Ghosted,” “Come Away with Me,” “Energy,” “Angel in Disguise” and “Mirage,” and also a cover of “Lose You to Love Me,” Rose said. “Some of the most significant ones include “You’re the Kinda Guy” being in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Film Festival and being included in the recent Winter Film Awards in New York City. Out of over 650 submissions from all over the world, they only included 11 music videos.”

Rose said two people who have been instrumental in her music career are Dr. Fink, from Prince’s band, The Revolution, and Chris Moon, who gave Prince his start. “Dr. Fink has been the composer, co-writer and producer on many of my original songs, and Chris Moon wrote the song “Energy” for me,” Rose said.

Rose met her boyfriend, the musical artist POEM KING, last summer when he played “Adam” to her “Eve” in the music video “Garden of Eden.” The couple have been working together since, and POEM KING wrote all of the poetry lyrics for “Ghosted.”

Rose chose Stillwater as the location for the music video “Ghosted.” She noted, “We fi lmed most of the scenes at my parents’ home in Stillwater, and the local cemetery allowed us to fi lm the graveyard scenes there.”

Rose said her parents, close friends and fellow musicians/actors are very supportive of her career choice. “Making a living in this industry as a touring singer/songwriter/recording artist and actress/director is extremely difficult, and most people I come across wonder out loud what I plan to do with my degree, and they assume I plan to be a music teacher,” she said.

Currently, Rose and POEM KING are working on a music video for two of her original songs, “Last First Kiss” and “Leave Your Baggage at the Door.”

“Now that I’m done with college, I’m in the process of writing some new original songs.

I’m also planning to continue training in songwriting and music production,” Rose said.

Added POEM KING, “I’ve been infusing poetry with opera for the fi rst time, and it’s sounding better than I dreamt.”

Rose and POEM KING live on a small lake in Shoreview and have a dog, a maltipoo, named Biscuit. “It’s been really fun to see all of the wildlife each day. We’ve seen swans, loons, ducks, cranes, coyotes, etc. We’re close to a park and a nature preserve, and it’s close to both St. Paul and Minneapolis, and there are plenty of running tracks and walking paths and lakes for water activities,” Rose said.

When she’s not making music, Rose said she loves competing in pageants. In in 2018, she was the second runner-up in the Miss Minnesota pageant. “I also love modeling and being an emcee at events.”

Rose has also been an avid volunteer for various causes since she was 5. She’s volunteered more than 2,500 hours, and has been recognized as a Pink Honor Roll volunteer for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

As for the future, Rose said, “I plan to continue training and perfecting my skills, and continue to write and record songs. I’m hoping to start performing live a lot more and start touring.”

Mustangs top Park Center, No. 1 Maple Grove for state soccer berth

The Mounds View boys took a very hard road to the state tournament last week.

The Mustangs shocked No. 1 ranked, previouslyunbeaten Maple Grove 5-4 in the Section 5AAA semifinals, then rolled past Park Center 3-0 in the finals, foiling a team that beat them 4-2 nine days earlier.

After knocking off the No. 1 and 2 seeds on the road, the No. 3 seeded Mustangs (15-22), coached by Joe Warren, will make their 16th state trip and fi rst since 2017.

“I am really proud of the way our team is defending as individuals and as a unit,” coach Joe Warren said. “We have also found success possessing the ball through the midfield and

putting opposing teams under pressure by our relentless attack.

“We hope to keep up these trends as we enter a difficult pool of teams in the state tournament.”

In the finals at Park Center on Oct. 19, Henry Elias scored twice against the Pirates (13-5-1). Simon Greer got the third goal. Aidan Petrich was in goal for the shutout.

In the upset of Maple Grove (15-1), Sam Hoyt delivered two goals and Elias, Greer and Aariz Arshad one each, as the Mustangs took leads of 3-0 and 5-2. The Mustang defense, which has 10 shutouts, could not shut down a Crimson team that was averaging 5.6 goals per game, but they held on for the win.

The Gregory family of Vadnais Heights had a memorable day in sports for the Mounds View Mustangs on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Senior twins Elizabeth and Maximus helped their respective cross country teams win the Suburban East Conference championships in the afternoon at Tanners Brook Golf Course near Forest Lake.

Amelia, a sophomore, helped the soccer team beat Maple Grove 2-0 for the Section 5AAA championship in Maple Grove in the evening.

“Max and I ended up going straight to Maple Grove after our race,” Elizabeth said. “Unfortunately, Amelia didn’t get the chance to watch us run, because her (team) bus left too early.”

Elizabeth, a co-captain, was the Mustangs No. 2 runner and placed ninth overall as they captured the program’s fi rst conference title since

1995 at Tanners Brook Golf Course.

Max, who played soccer previously, switched to cross country this year, recruited by his twin. He joined a strong lineup, worked his way into the top five and placed 22nd as they won the SEC by a wide margin.

“Max has seen the incredible running community we have at Mounds View through my experiences with it,” Elizabeth said. “He joined track last spring and loved it, so this fall he joined cross country.”

Mustang girls nab first CC conference title in 26 years

Mounds View captured its fi rst girls conference championship in cross country in 26 years, placing five runners in the top 15, on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Mounds View scored 51 points, followed by Forest Lake with 78, Stillwater 80, Woodbury 85, East Ridge 125, Roseville Area 133, White Bear Lake 183, and Irondale 199, at Tanners Brook Golf Course near Forest Lake.

The Mustangs were led by junior Taylor Isabel, who placed third in a school record 18:23, behind East Ridge’s Halle Mestery (18:06) and Forest

Lake’s Norah Hushagen (18:22).

Also making all-conference were senior Elizabeth Gregory in ninth place (19:28, with a personal best by 55 seconds), freshman Kate Roeber 11th (19:41), seventh-grader Linnea Ousdigian in 13th (19:52) and freshman Malaina Brodin in 15th (20:03.)

Isabel said the Mustangs developed team culture and community this season.

“We know that when we focus on just running for each other, the titles and PRs will come,” Isabel said.

“Going into the conference, we knew that we had the potential to win, but our main focus was to just pack up, work together, and run fast times on

a fast course.”

Their 6-7 runners placed in the top third with Olivia Hoyhtya 17th and Lauren Kath 23rd. The Mustang junior varsity also placed fi rst.

“It is so great to see the results of all of our hard work pay off,” said Isabel, “in the form of major PRs and a team sweep of the varsity and JV titles.”

The Mustangs, who also won two invitationals this year, moved up from fourth place in the SEC last year to nab their fi rst title since 1995.

“It was a great day,” said coach Jimmy McArthur.

“This team loves one another and really is running for one another.”

• To make people aware of the many contributions that Indians have made to Minnesota. While the book is certainly not a comprehensive Who’s Who of the Indian community, it gives examples of many of the contributions made by members of this community.

A. What do you hope readers will gain from the book?

With over 50,000 people of Indian origin now in Minnesota, I am hoping that after reading my book, people can have meaningful conversations and discussions with colleagues, clients and neighbors of IndianAmerican origin. I sincerely believe, “communication is the beginning of understanding.”

Q. Who are your favorite authors?

A. I am an “equal-opportunity” reader. I love to read a wide variety of books and authors. Often, I have several books on my nightstand and alternate between them.

For escapist fare, I enjoy mysteries, especially the cozy ones with a strong woman protagonist.

Q. Where can Press readers find the book?

Q. Do you have any plans for future works?

A. Currently, I do not have any plans in the works. I am hoping to retire from technical writing and return to my journalistic roots. I also would like to pursue my dreams of writing for children and perhaps complete stories of my life which I have started writing (through Storyworth.com, a gift our children gave us). I hope to make these short narratives into a memoir, not so much for publication but more for my grandkids and posterity.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: India is a very diverse country, and the Indian American community here reflects this diversity. Due to this, it was very difficult to generalize and describe various facts about the Indian community. Each time I documented something, I could think of many exceptions or differences to what I had described. In the end, I tried to cover as many aspects and facts as I could to give a bird’s-eye view of this diverse community.

Secondly, although I was able to draw a lot of the content for the book from my own experience of living in this community as well as from archival research, I could not have done it all without the help of many members of both the Indian community, particularly the people I’d interviewed, as well as the staff of Minnesota Historical Society, especially my editor, Shannon Pennefeather.

they approached MNHS with the idea of doing an oral history project for the growing Indian community.

Between 1993 and 2013, nine projects were completed documenting the experiences of various individuals and organizations from the Indian community. That was the fi rst start in documenting the presence of Indian Americans in Minnesota.

Then in 2016, a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian called “Beyond Bollywood” was brought to the Minnesota History Center.

My husband and I were part of an advisory committee that was formed to help the curators localize the exhibit to include Minnesotan Indians. The curators of this exhibit asked me to write a 3,000-word article on Indian Americans in Minnesota for their website, called Mnopedia.

The article, “From the Ganges to the Land of 10,000 Lakes” was published in 2017.

On the heels of the “Beyond Bollywood” exhibit came the idea for a book on Indian Americans that was missing from the Minnesota Historical Society Press’ series, called “People of Minnesota.”

India Association of Minnesota, with funding from the Dr. Dash Foundation, approached MNHS to produce a book that would be similar to other books but would be coffeetable size and in color! The book, the fi rst of its kind, would serve as a primer on Indian Americans and be a resource, especially to schools and libraries.

It was then I was asked by the director of publications of MNHS if I would write this book. I remember thinking that it would be an easy and quick job and I would simply expand on the article I had written earlier.

Was I ever wrong! The book took more than a year to write, and I had to take time off from my job to complete it.

Q. Provide a brief overview and main purpose of writing “From Seven Rivers to Ten Thousand Lakes.”

The book provides an overview of the Indian people. It describes the three waves and the conditions that spurred their immigration to Minnesota; the experiences of settling in the state and establishing a community here; the professional, political and economic contributions of Indian Americans in Minnesota, including both permanent and visiting residents; and the pursuit and celebration of cultural and religious traditions in this, their adopted home.

The book contains statistics and research data and also many photographs, personal stories and vignettes that are informative even for a casual reader.

The book was written with these goals: • To communicate and thus promote an understanding of this large immigrant group. The intention is that it will hopefully bring down the walls and divisions that seem to have been created these days about people or views that are different from your own.

Tips for celebrating Halloween with your pets With enough repetitions, your pet will start to associate treats every time someone is at the door.

• If your pet is shy or fearful by nature, or if they have a habit of door dashing, plan to confi ne them in a safe, quiet room as far away from the door as possible. Play a radio, TV or white-noise machine to muffle noises.

If your pet does end up getting out and going missing, check out lost-andfound pet resources and keep an eye on the Found Pets Bulletin Board.

• Keep lit candles and candy out of reach. Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats, while xylitol (a common sweetener) is toxic to dogs.

• If you intend to take your dog out trick-or-treating with the kids, make sure to have them on a leash and

Animal Humane Society (AHS) has some tips for celebrating the holiday with your pets in mind: • Carving pumpkins? Use one of AHS’s Halloween stencils for an animal-themed look! Pumpkin is a safe food for dogs, cats and critters, so feel free to get your pets in on the action by feeding them a little bit of your pumpkin guts and seeds as a treat.

• If you’re planning on handing out candy this year, now’s the time to desensitize your pet to the sound of knocking and create positive associations. Have someone knock on the door and then give your pet a treat.

Also, make sure your pet is wearing a collar and ID tags with your phone number and address. If your pet is microchipped, make sure your information is up to date.

Pets and costumes Is there anything cuter than a pet in a costume? If you’re planning on dressing up your pet, make sure the costume is made of non-toxic material, is free of small dangling accessories and allows normal movement.

Start getting your pet used to the costume before the big day by letting them smell it and slowly rubbing it

on their body to transfer their scent.

Once you start putting the costume on for practice, offer lots of treats to create positive associations. If they freeze while wearing the costume, coax them with treats or a feather toy so they know they can move while wearing the outfit.

Don’t force it. Some pets just hate wearing costumes. If your pet seems stressed out, find an alternative, like a Halloween-themed bandana, collar or bow tie.

The costume you plan to wear may be scary to your pet, too, so practice wearing your costume around your pet before the big day.

for the apartment will be provided in a two-level below-grade parking structure as well as a surface parking lot. Access for the apartment complex will be provided off Highway 96, with a proposed driveway at the intersection with Dale Street. In addition to the apartment building, the proposal includes 22 detached villa homes and seven singlefamily lake lot homes, with access for these 29 homes linking to the existing public street to the east, Harbor Court.

According to Hill, property owners within 350 feet of the development were notified and the city has received many comments from the public, mostly from property owners in adjacent neighborhoods as well as residents on Snail Lake.

“Most comments express opposition and concerns regarding the proposed development,” Hill said at the Oct. 18 City Council meeting. “These concerns generally relate to land use compatibility, density, traffic, visual impact, architectural design and scale, lake use impacts and potential environmental impacts — including removal of mature trees.”

Hill said that in addition to addressing agency comments, staff is recommending the City Council request the developer consider the following actions as part of the next stage of applications: • Preparation of a traffic study analysis.

• Preparation or presentation of a market study specifically addressing the need/demand for market-rate apartments.

• PUD development stage application should include a detailed tree preservation and replacement plan consistent with city requirements.

• Developer should consider design modifications to the proposed apartment building that would lessen the visual mass and scale of the structure especially in proximity to other residential properties (this could include tiered step-down design and may also require the preparation of shadow impact analysis).

• Encourage the developer to incorporate public trails, additional green space, sustainability best practices, water quality elements and other design features that address the environmental sensitivity of the property and proximity to Snail Lake.

The developer was at the council meeting to answer questions from the City Council and made no comment.

Six residents spoke at the meeting with concerns dealing with traffic, noise from Highway 96, Department of Natural Resources approval, the design of the development and impacts on the beauty of the property on Snail Lake.

the agencies have responded, and there’s a lot of information that will still come in that’s important to you and important to the city.”

City Manager Terry Schwerm said next steps are that the developer will take the information provided from the public, the Planning Commission and the City Council and revise their plans.

Council Member Emy Johnson requested that the developer engage with the neighborhood.

“There’s clearly a lot of emotion and energy from the neighborhood, and I would encourage that this engagement occur, as I think back to the history of all the developers that we’ve had at the table — that is something that has worked very well when the developer listens to the neighborhood, keeping in mind that some things can’t be changed,” she said.

The mayor and all City Council members agreed with staff recommendations and said they understand how the residents feel.

“We’re looking at this proposal tonight, and we’ll look at it in the future, because we’re legally required to do that because there’s a property owner who has the right to develop his property,” Martin said.

Council Member Sue Denkinger noted that she watched the Planning Commission meeting and read all of the letters from residents at least once.

She addressed the audience and said, “Know that we care.”

Other council actions: • Martin said the city has hired Brad Martens as the new city manager. Martens will replace Schwerm, who will retire in November.

• The mayor commended the public works staff for a successful cleanup day.

• Martin mentioned there are openings on the Bikeways And Trails Committee, Economic Development Commission, Human Rights Commission and Planning Commission. “If anyone is interested in serving the community on any one one of those committees or commissions, the applications are online,” she said.

• Council Member Sue Denkinger congratulated Doug McCulloch, the owner of the Winkin’ Rooster restaurant, on winning Best of Reader’s Choice Awards for the Shoreview Press.

The next Shoreview City Council meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, in council chambers at City Hall, 4600 Victoria St. N., in Shoreview.

School board recognizes students for academic and musical achievements The Mounds View School Board recognized 16 semifinalists and 24 commended students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program during a recent school board meeting.

Mounds View High School Principal Stephanie Bruggers introduced the 15 semifinalists and 18 commended finalists from Mounds View High School and noted that two commended students had a perfect 36 ACT score and six of the semifinalists had a perfect ACT score.

“The difference (between commended students and semifinalists) is that a student that is commended is in the top 3 to 4% nationwide in their scores and a student that reaches semifinalist status is in the top 1%,” Bruggers said. “We're incredibly proud of your academics and we're even more proud of well-rounded students.”

Commended students join approximately 34,000 students nationally who will receive letters of commendation.

Semifinalists are among approximately 16,000 students nationally who are competing for scholarships in the highly competitive program and the finalists will be announced in February.

Both Bruggers and the the school board congratulated the students and gave them a big round of applause at the Oct. 12 Mounds View School Board meeting.

Superintendent Chris Lennox recognized six ALC students who were named finalists in the Minnesota Reading Association's annual Celebrate Literacy award. “We definitely want to pass around our congratulations to those students, their families and of course the staff supporting them at the ALC,” he said.

Lennox also recognized the Irondale High School Marching Band.

“The Marching Knights recently hosted the 29th annual Music of the Night event. It's always a great experience and we want to congratulate everyone that was involved in preparing for, hosting and then performing in that event,” Lennox said. “In addition, the marching band also recently participated in the Minnesota State Marching Band finals and were named champions for Class AAA.”

Other board actions • Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Angie Peschel and Assistant Director of Assessment Mary Stobb gave a presentation on the 2020-21 World's Best Workforce Student Achievement Report.

The Minnesota State Legislation mandates that districts develop a comprehensive strategic plan to support and improve teaching and learning that is aligned with creating the world’s best workforce.

Here are the five components of the strategic plan: • 1. All students meet school readiness goals.

• 2. All third-grade students achieve grade-level literacy.

• 3. All students graduate from highschool.

• 4. All students attain college and career readiness.

• 5. Close achievement gaps for all student groups.

• School Board Treasurer Shauna Bock read the gifts the district received this period. There were 13 gifts received for schools and programs for a total of $548.52 and there were 13 gifts received for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf for a total of $20,071.43.

• School Board member Jim DeMay said at the last Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) session students presented their trials and tribulations during COVID-19. DeMay said some of the student's comments were — they want to stay in school, pay attention to mental health and equity concerns. Also, AMSD discussed expanding teachers of color. “We talked about changing some of the Minnesota licensure statutes. We talked about a program we're involved with at Mounds View, grow your own, which we take state grants and try to get our local kids of color interested in teaching in our district,” he said.

The next Mounds View School Board meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the District Center, 4570 Victoria St. N. in Shoreview.

Metro deer management is anything but simple

According to Minnesota law, deer are owned by the state and managed on behalf of the people of Minnesota by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Across most of the state that occurs in dozens of management units, to achieve more localized goals. However, in some places, namely the Twin Cities metro area, things get complicated.

Most of the metro area is included in deer permit area 701, where hunting often does not occur due to fi rearms discharge restrictions imposed by municipalities. Scott Noland, DNR Wildlife Manager in Forest Lake, says there isn’t much he can do to influence management in those places. According to the DNR’s Urban Deer Population Control policy, where local ordinances preclude firearm use, “responsibility for deer population management reverts substantially to the LGU [local governmental unit].”

Where that is the case, several things are required of LGUs that undertake deer population control. Those include making a deer population estimate, stating a population goal, a public input process, and a written plan to achieve population goals. Also, accurate records of deer-car collisions and citizen complaints must be kept.

Noland explains that where the onus is on LGUs to keep deer numbers reasonable, his role is to help facilitate management. He does that through setting liberal harvest limits (currently five deer per hunter in area 701) and making himself available for technical guidance. “We’re trying to drive the population toward goal, while providing municipalities flexibility to achieve their goals.”

For hopeful hunters and other residents who wish to understand where hunting is allowed or how deer control is conducted, local ordinances and policies vary widely. Some cities, like Blaine, Hugo and Lino Lakes allow hunting in some areas, with restrictions. Most others, like Shoreview, White Bear Township and Stillwater, authorize little to no hunting whatsoever.

The city of Vadnais Heights does allow deer hunting with a permit issued through application process, which comes with several stipulations.

City Administrator Kevin Watson reports there are usually 15-25 permits issued each year. There have been 21 issued so far in 2021.

Watson explains that issuing such permits is part of the city’s overall deer management strategy and is accepted by the community. And while he says, “a little bit of it is tradition,” the city genuinely wants participants to help control the population: “We do ask people to harvest [deer] if they’re able.”

The total number of deer taken in 2020 was 21; in the last eight years that number has ranged from 15 to 36.

Another part of Vadnais Heights’ deer management includes Ramsey County’s use of controlled hunts. Those hunts take place annually across the county, typically in parks and open spaces. The Metro Bowhunters Resource Base provides the hunters and administers the hunts during regular deer season, in cooperation with Ramsey County (and other counties and cities all over the area).

According to Michael Goodnature, Natural Resource Manager for Ramsey Co. Parks & Recreation Department, those hunts are focused on the higher concentrations of deer.

Each year, Goodnature conducts an aerial population survey to determine the numbers and locations of deer in Ramsey County. The results of those surveys help inform the county’s approach to deer management, as well as individual cities.

While the stated population goal is 20 deer per square mile of suitable deer habitat, deer density has been at least twice that for over two decades (topping out at 95 deer/sq.mi. in 2004). Certain places, like Turtle Creek in Shoreview and the Vadnais Lake area, are perennial hotspots.

Goodnature acknowledges that chronically high deer density may cause detriment to the overall health of the environment, not to mention the deer themselves. But, like Noland, his ability to get deer numbers low is somewhat limited by population goals set by the municipalities within Ramsey County. “Basically, I only have jurisdiction over Ramsey County Parks.”

If, after the controlled hunts, deer numbers still remain high, Goodnature has the option to hire sharpshooters to further reduce the population.

however, it is cost prohibitive and not feasible for achieving landscape-wide population control.

Both Noland and Goodnature cite citizen complaints as one of the main drivers of deer management policy. Combined with population surveys, complaints help determine where deer control needs to happen, and to what extent. Residents living where fi rearm discharge restrictions are in place are encouraged to contact the city fi rst, as they are likely required to keep records of such complaints.

The moment a person is diagnosed with cancer can elicit a variety of emotions. Fear of what’s to come is a common reaction to such a diagnosis, and some people may feel alone upon learning they have cancer. But no cancer patient should face their diagnosis and treatment alone. In fact, a strong support network can be vital to patients’ recoveries.

According to Weill Cornell Medicine, recent changes in the healthcare industry have shifted the burden of care from the hospital to the home.

That underscores the importance of a strong support network. Many of the challenges cancer patients face in the months after diagnosis will be new, and patients can expect a range of emotions. According to Breast Cancer Now, a charitable organization that funds one-third of breast cancer research in the United Kingdom, women may experience emotions such as shock, anger, disbelief, anxiety, and sadness after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Having loved ones there to help them make sense of those emotions and stay positive as they navigate their way through the treatment process is essential.

In addition to providing emotional support, loved ones

of breast cancer patients may need to take on additional roles as they help their friends or family members face the challenges that lay ahead. Because of the industry changes noted by Weill Cornell Medicine, cancer caregivers and support networks may need to prepare themselves to take on the following roles, each of which is vital to cancer patients’ survival.

• Monitor the disease: Support networks may need to keep track of how their loved ones’ disease is progressing and if there are any complications from treatment.
