Mounds View Public Schools received one grant for Irondale High School from the Legislature’s school safety grants passed during the 2018 session; all of its other requests for other schools, totaling about $1.14 million, were not granted. The Legislature approved $25 million in school safety grants but a total of $255.5 million in requests were made, according to the Minnesota Department of Education. High-priority projects were given preference and then chosen at random until the $25 million had been assigned. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Minnesota School Safety Center helped to determine high-priority projects. High-priority projects were defined as improvements to exterior entry security and communication systems. Half of the funds were designated for schools outside the 11-county metropolitan area. Irondale was one of 123 school buildings across the state to receive grants. About 1,000 schools made requests.
