Wednesday, Nov. 11, marks Veterans Day, the federal holiday that honors those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution establishing an annual observance, and in 1938, Nov. 11 became a national holiday. While Memorial Day specifically honors those who have died while serving in the U.S. military, Veterans Day gives pays tribute to all veterans, both living and dead, who

have served their country in times of both war and peace.

2020 marks several military-related milestones: the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War and the 30th anniversary of the end of the Panama Invasion and the beginning of Desert Shield have all fallen this year.

For the last 15 years, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) has hosted a live Veterans Day event, typically at the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights. However, due

Amid rising COVID-19 cases in Ramsey County, Mounds View Public Schools will shift its high school students to full-time distance learning starting Wednesday, Nov. 11.

COVID-19 case counts have been on the rise in Minnesota since Labor Day. According to the most recent data available from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), there are approximately 34 cases per 10,000 residents in Ramsey County.

Guidance from the MDH and Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) advises school districts to move middle and high school students to distance learning if that number falls between 30 and 49, and to move all students to distance learning if the number exceeds 50.

In a Nov. 5 email to students and families, Mounds View Superintendent Chris Lennox said that it is “clear” that transmission has started occuring within the district's schools.

“Over the past two weeks across all schools, we had 12 staff members test positive for COVID-19 and 49 in quarantine,” Lennox said. “At the same time, 27 students tested positive and 205 were in quarantine. As you can imagine, this is beginning to impact our ability to secure substitutes and properly staff schools, especially our high schools.”

In light of this localized spread, Lennox said, all Mounds View high school students will transition to distance learning as of Wednesday, Nov. 11. Middle and elementary schools will continue with hybrid learning, with groups of students alternating attending school in-person and online from home.

Lennox said district staff will continue to review data and plan to meet with the district's regional support team on Friday, Nov. 13, to further discuss recommendations for learning models.

School districts throughout the state have recently received new information from the MDE, clarifying guidance around shifting learning models, which Lennox said Mounds View district staff are working to fully understand. “The new guidance received … about the use of local data seemed to suggest that school districts could make decisions independent of the recommendations provided to them about learning models,” he said.

However, the district's legal team has advised that Mounds View schools follow state recommendations. “The clear advice from our legal team is that we should follow and implement the recommendations of state and local health experts or we would expose the district to legal risk,” explained Lennox. “The adjustments to our learning models moving forward do align with public health recommendations.”

As of press time, high schoolers are expected to remain in distance learning for four weeks, through Friday, Dec. 4. Lennox said at that time, the district will again meet with its regional support team to decide on any changes to the current learning model. Athletics and extracurricular activities will continue as normal in the meantime.

VETERANS DAY: Military members honored ‘for their service and sacrifices’ FROM PAGE 1

to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and statewide restrictions on inperson gatherings, the event is moving online for Veterans Day 2020.

“While we are unable to gather in person this year, the importance of recognizing Minnesota veterans for their service and sacrifices has not diminished,” said MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke. “We encourage all Minnesotans to take a moment to thank the veterans in their lives for the freedoms we all enjoy.”

A 30-minute recorded program can be found online at www.minnesotaveteran.org/ veteransday2020 and will be available to watch after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The program will include music from the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band, as well as remarks from Gov. Tim Walz, MDVA Commissioner Larry Herke, Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard Shawn Manke, and others. WCCO-TV Reporter Reg Chapman, also a veteran of the Gulf War, will host the program.

The traditional Veterans Day Moment of Silence will still go on as scheduled. Each year, citizens are asked to observe two minutes of silence in honor of the service and sacrifice of veterans throughout the nation’s history, beginning at 3:11 p.m.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially occurred on Nov. 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, Nov. 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'A rmistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress—at the urging of veterans service organizations—amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October.

Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The fi rst Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971.

Finally, on Sept. 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed annually on Nov. 11.

District 42 election results: DFL incumbents fend off Republican challengers

All three DFL incumbent candidates in Minnesota's 42nd district will return to the state Legislature after their successful reelection bids last week.

Senator Jason Isaacson received 29,637 votes (58.7%) while his Republican challenger, Ben Schwanke, received 20,764 (41.1%). Isaacson, of Shoreview, was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2016 after four years in the Minnesota House. He will serve another four-year term, from January 2021 to January 2025.

During the last Legislative session Isaacson served on the Agriculture, Rural Development and Housing Policy Committee; the Higher Education Finance and Policy Committee; the Human Services Reform Finance and Policy Committee; and the Jobs and

Economic Growth Finance and Policy Committee. Isaacson is an instructor at Century College, where he teaches classes in communication.

Representative Kelly Moller, of Shoreview, also handily won her reelection bid. Moller received 14,978 votes, 60.7% of the total votes cast for State Representative District 42A. Republican Candy Sina received 9,657, or 39.2%.

This will be Moller's second term in the state Legislature; she was first elected in 2018 and served as the vice chair of the Judiciary Finance and Civil Law Division Committee, as well as on the Education Policy Committee, and Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Finance and Policy Division.

Moller is an assistant attorney with Hennepin County. She will serve a second two-year term, from January 2021 to January 2023.

In District 42B, Jamie Becker-Finn, of Roseville, received 15,945 votes (62%) compared to 9,745 (37.9%) for Republican Sue Finney. Becker-Finn was fi rst elected to the Legislature in 2016. Her upcoming term, from January 2021 to January 2023, will be her fourth.

As of press time, finalized votes hat will determine which party will be the majority in each chamber were still trickling in. Heading into Election Day, Minnesota was the sole state with a divided Legislature, and though some key races had yet to be called as of press time, it is likely that the state's legislative branch will remain split.

Shoreview's city council incumbents prevailed in their bids for reelection last week.

Sue Denkinger and Emy Johnson won the two open seats on the Shoreview City Council, securing their reelection bids against three other challengers. Both will serve four-year terms that expire Dec. 31, 2024.

Denkinger received 28.2% of the total votes, followed

by Johnson with 24.7%.

Johnson narrowly beat Dave Olson, who received 23.6% of the total votes, a difference of 272 votes.

Jillian McAdams followed with 14.4% and Abraham Wolfe with 8.3%.

This will be Denkinger's second term on the City Council. She was first

elected in 2016 and is retired from a four-decade career with Thomson Reuters. She currently serves as vice-president of the city’s Economic Development Authority, as well as an executive board member of the Ramsey County League of Local Governments.

Johnson was first elected to the Shoreview council in 2012. She is the regional security manager of Allina Health and previously worked at Target Corporation in a variety of roles. Johnson has served as president of the Economic Development Authority and as a board member for the Lake Johanna Fire Department and Northeast Youth and Family Services.

COVID-19 tunnel vision has patients ignoring other concerns 9

y 14-year-old son and I recently traveled to Clearwater, Minnesota to hunt deer on a friend’s farm. Across the upper Midwest, hunting is a rite of passage along with the annual fishing opener. In Wisconsin, employees often request two weeks off at the time of hire. Hunting family traditions run deep - from work weekends at the hunting camp doing chores such as splitting wood that will fit just right in the cast iron stove, to scouting the land for the perfect place to set up the stands. Deer hunting is a time for family and friends to be together in nature, to bond and share stories.

This was our second hunt together, as basketball tournaments often pose a conflict.

After being spooked opening morning by a monster buck who ran up behind us our first year, time we were overwhelmed Publisher’s this by the number of deer. In a slug zone, we are required to use View slugs that are fired from what is Carter Johnson traditionally called a shotgun, versus a rifle. The slugs come with limitations on the distance one can accurately shoot. The two guns we used are roughly accurate to 70 and 150+ yards.

Sighting in a gun and knowing its limitations is crucial when choosing to properly harvest a deer.

Without a range finder, thinking of distance in terms of a football field can help. In the zone, we hunted we could take a doe or buck. My guess is it is overpopulated and the DNR is trying to thin it out the herd. We chose our stand after looking at weather conditions and wind direction.

We were up at 5:05 a.m. As we walked into the darkness my heart was beating as the sounds in the field and woods came alive. As we settled in, the sunrise turned into “Sweet Tart” red and pink.

Every bunch of grass or sticks in the distance looked like a deer silhouette. My heart raced as Kellen and I traded off different sightlines. A few deer appeared in the distance, but they didn’t have antlers. Then a four-point buck showed up trotting along the horizon. As he circled us at more than 250 yards out, he ended up coming in right next to the stand. Kellen took aim at this moving target, clicked off the safety, and the buck stopped for a split second only to jump a pile of sticks and trot off. It takes a split-second reaction. It was awesome to see the buck and to be out hunting with my son and my friend. It doesn’t matter that we didn’t get a deer - it was an experience. In my lifetime, I have good memories of hunting at my grandparents’ home but can’t remember a time when we were hunting in blaze orange shirts.

This could have been the warmest deer opener on record. I know we will be thinking this year about how the freezer could have used a few packages of breakfast sausage and sticks.

With the two-week season, I wish everyone a memorable and safe hunt. May the safe hunting traditions be passed on for generations. I would love to see hunter safety training back in the classrooms - though I suppose at this point it would just be great to see kids in the classrooms again. Non-hunters out walking in the woods or an area that allows hunting need to be on the lookout this time of year. Always remember to wear at a minimum a blaze orange hat and keep any pets on a leash. It’s wise to have your pet outfitted with a blaze orange collar or vest, too. Did you know that it is illegal for dogs to chase deer? Hunter safety is required for hunters; the non-hunting public also needs to know where the risks are. People often wander into unsafe situations, frustrating a hunter while putting themselves at risk. With sherpa all the fashion rage this season, can you imagine what a person tying their boot or shoe on a trail might be mistaken for? During the hunting season, let’s make hunter safety education a priority.

1st COVID-19 spit testing site now open in east metro

East metro residents seeking a more comfortable alternative to the COVID-19 nasal swab test can now find one locally.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has opened a saliva testing site in St. Paul at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium (175 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul). As of Friday, Oct. 30, the site is open and ready for patients. It is the first saliva testing site in the Twin Cities metro and the seventh in the state.

Testing is free to all Minnesotans who believe they need a COVID-19 test, including those who are asymptomatic, according to an MDH press release.

“Minnesota is seeing an alarming jump in COVID-19 cases, and neighboring states are seeing even worse.

The good news is that Minnesotans have it in their power to make things better if everyone does their part,” said MDH Commissioner Jan Malcolm in a statement. “Testing is a key part of our strategy, and we've made great progress

in removing obstacles to testing thanks to strong partnerships across the state.

When combined with social distancing, masking, avoiding crowds and staying home when sick, testing helps us slow the spread of COVID-19 and move us closer to the day when we have safe and effective vaccines.”

The saliva test, like the traditional nasal swab, is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, which detects the virus's genetic material. The MDH says it has the same effectiveness rate as a nasal swab but is generally more comfortable to take. Participants will self-administer the saliva test by spitting into a funnel attached to a small tube and so should avoid eating, drinking, chewing or smoking anything for at least 30 minutes before testing. Results will be provided by email within 24 to 48 hours.

Due to high expected demand, testing in St. Paul will be available seven days a week, noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Participants will be asked for health insurance information so the state can bill their insur-

ance companies; if a person is uninsured, however, the state will cover the cost to keep testing free for everyone.

“We're pleased this hub will open in St. Paul and offer another fast, easy way for people who live and work in the east metro to get tested,” said Ramsey County Board Chair Toni Carter. “The new site expands and complements Ramsey County efforts to reach underserved populations through the low-barrier testing we have been offering at Aldrich Arena and at other sites with our community partners.”

The state's first saliva testing site opened Sept. 23 in Duluth. Since then, sites have opened in Winona, Moorhead, Brooklyn Park, Mankato and St. Cloud.

Three additional sites are set to open in the Twin Cities metro area within the coming weeks. Those tests will be processed locally, according to MDH, at a new saliva testing lab in Oakdale.

Deer hunters can access a variety of online maps from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR’s interactive deer permit map is available at dnr.state.mn.us/ hunting/deer/map.html. It shows area boundaries and locations of public land.

By clicking on “detail report,” hunters will find harvest history, permit area designation, winter severity history and other information. By clicking “detail map,” users can view and download a PDF map of the permit area. On a mobile device, the PDF maps can be used with the Avenza Maps app as a geospatial PDF (GeoPDF).

GeoPDFs display a current location like Google Maps, but the user does not need to be connected to the internet or have cell service while using the maps.

Hunters can also find online maps of public land in Minnesota, including the state’s 1.3 million acres of land in wildlife management areas. One way to search for WMAs is using the WMA Finder on the DNR website.

Additionally, the DNR is providing background maps for GPS units that depict WMA boundaries and parking areas. More information is available at dnr.state.mn.us/wmas/gps/index.html.

Shoreview's longest-tenured employee is now entering his golden years.

Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Gary Chapman retired last month after more than four decades with the city. Chapman was first hired as a seasonal employee in 1975, then as a full-time parks maintenance worker in 1979 before being promoted to lead worker in the parks department in 1988. In 2000, he became the buildings and grounds superintendent and managed hundreds of projects, including major ones like the recent expansion of the Shoreview Community Center and renovation of the Shoreview Commons.

With almost 42 years of service to Shoreview, Chapman is the longest-tenured staff member in Shoreview's history. He officially retired on Oct. 30 and was honored with an official proclamation at the Nov. 2 Shoreview City Council meeting.

Mayor Sandy Martin read the proclamation recognizing Chapman for his service to the city and the positive contributions he has made.

“We congratulate Gary for a remarkable 41 1/2-year career with the city of Shoreview, and all of us wish Gary a very well-deserved retirement,” Martin read.

The digital StarLab—a portable, inflatable and technologically advanced planetarium—has arrived in the Mounds View school district. StarLab served generations of Mounds View elementary school students and was beloved by students and staff alike.

However, after 30 years of wear and tear, the StarLab experience was increasingly limited in functionality, and the desire for replacing this valued asset became a priority for district staff.

The Mounds View Schools Education Foundation announced Mission: StarLab—a capital campaign dedicated to raising awareness and the necessary funds to purchase a new StarLab and provide training to the staff. Thanks to the generosity of Voya Foundation, Bel Air Elementary PTA, Island Lake Elementary PTA, Pinewood Elementary PTA, Sunnyside Elementary PTA, Turtle Lake Elementary PTA and Valentine Hills Elementary’s PTO as well as individuals within the community, the foundation achieved its campaign objective and a new StarLab became a reality. This fall, the new StarLab arrived at Bel Air Elementary School.

While unpacking the new StarLab, Jean Modjeski, science specialist and resident StarLab expert, shared her enthusiasm for how StarLab will engage students in learning. “The science team is excited about the advanced technology the digital StarLab offers educators. We are considering our options in offering the StarLab experience to students this year virtually and can’t wait to fully implement the new system when students are back with us full time. It’s destined to be an even greater science specialist highlight for everyone.”

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce reported the following incidents in Shoreview: • An Eagan man, a St. Paul man and a St. Paul woman all reported the driver’s side windows of their vehicles smashed Oct. 18 while they were parked in the Rice Creek Park south lot in the 1900 block of County Road I. A purse containing a phone and credit cards was stolen, and the credit cards were used fraudulently in Fridley.

• A Cottage Grove couple also reported the driver’s side window of their vehicle smashed Oct. 18 as it was parked in the Rice Creek Park south lot while they were in the park. A purse containing credit cards and two phones was stolen. The credit cards were canceled before fraudulent charges were made, however. One of the phones was recovered by a citizen the following day.

• An unlocked vehicle was reported rummaged through overnight Oct. 18-19 as it was parked in an underground parking garage in the 700 block of County Road F, and $20 in cash was stolen.

• A bicycle that did not belong to any of the neighbors was reported found Oct. 19 in a yard in the 4300 block of Victoria Street N. After clearing the National Crime Information Center database (NCIC), the bike was taken to be placed into the property room.

• A resident in the 3500 block of Owasso Street reported fraudulent transactions on her credit cards Oct. 19. The complainant returned home from work to fi nd her home in disarray and items missing — along with the suspected overnight guest.

• A Shoreview man, 32, and a New Brighton woman, 37, were arrested for domestic assault at 8:49 p.m. Oct. 22 in the 4700 block of Victoria Street N. after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies determined that both parties had assaulted each other during a domestic family incident.

• A New Brighton woman, 66, was arrested on a drug offense after deputies were dispatched out to investigate an unknown female wearing no shoes who was knocking on a door in the 1100 block of Ravenswood Street and requesting a ride home at 4:52 a.m. Oct. 23. She was transported to Regions Hospital, then booked and released pending further investigation.

• Dash cameras, a radar scanner, $20 in cash and other items in the center console were reported stolen during the afternoon of Oct. 23 after an unlocked vehicle in a parking lot in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. was rummaged through.

• A St. Paul man and an Inver Grove Heights woman reported their vehicle broken into Oct. 30 while it was parked at Grass Lake Nature Preserve in the 500 block of Gramsie Road. The front passenger window had been broken in, and a purse hidden under a jacket was stolen. The credit cards from inside the purse were used at Target, and a photo of the suspects using the cards has been retrieved.

• A backpack with tools and change was reported stolen after its owner had inadvertently left his vehicle unlocked overnight Oct. 24-25 in the 700 block of Crystal Avenue.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies reported starting a vehicle pursuit at 9:34 a.m. Oct. 26 after they tried to conduct a traffic stop in the area of Lexington Avenue and Red Fox Road. Deputies were in hot pursuit of the vehicle for 4 miles until they terminated the chase due to safety concerns with other traffic.

• A Coon Rapids woman reported the front driver’s side window of her vehicle broken in Oct. 31 as it was parked at a store in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N., and her purse stolen from the glove box after she received a text alert of credit card use while she was still in the store. She then went to the parking lot to fi nd her damaged vehicle.

• Associated Speech & Language in the 3400 block of Lexington Avenue N. reported a burglary at their office clinic over the weekend of Oct 24-27. After the burglars entered the building, they pried open drawers and cabinets and stole petty cash.

• Theft from auto was reported Oct. 31 in the 5600 block of Donegal Drive.

• A Corpus Christi, Texas, man was arrested late Oct. 31 for DWI after deputies checked on a running vehicle stopped in the parking lot of a business in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road. The man, the sole occupant, was passed out behind the wheel.

• A permit to purchase was reported lost Oct. 27 in the 600 block of Emil Avenue. The complainant needed a police report to have the replacement permit issued.

• More than $1,600 in work tools was reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue N. sometime over the weekend of Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

• The Target store in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. on Oct. 29 reported a person in the store for grabbing an iPad from an employee before running out of the store without paying. Possible suspect information

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS A short time later, the subjects exited the underground garage carrying two lawn chairs they didn't have in their possession when they entered the building. They then got into a vehicle and left. The caretakers had identified the vehicle, so deputies subsequently pulled it over. Inside the vehicle were the two lawn chairs belonging to a resident of the complex.

The subjects admitted to the activity. The man has burglary convictions from 2001 and 2013 and theft convictions from 2002 and 2004, along with a drug possession conviction from 2017. The woman has a theft conviction from 2015, and check forgery convictions from 2019, for which she is on probation. She has also been charged with theft in Washington County.

Dullum notched the lone goal, with a header off a corner kick, in the 1-0 semi-final win over St. Paul Central. In the finals against Champion Park, Dullum drilled a 35-yard goal in the seventh minute to open the scoring in a 5-1 victory. “Bryce has a work ethic and inexhaustible motor,” said coach Joe Warren.

A Corpus Christi, Texas man, 38, faces up to one year imprisonment and/or a maximum $3,000 fine, for second degree DWI refusal to submit to a chemical test, along with the possibility of doubling that sentence with the additional charge of third degree DWI, after Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies found him asleep behind the wheel of his running vehicle.

At 9:40 p.m. Oct. 31, deputies were dispatched out on a report of a slumper in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Hilton Garden Inn, 1050 Gramsie Road. After they knocked on the window of the vehicle and woke up the defendant, deputies noticed all the classic signs of intoxication.

The defendant admitted to drinking before driving the vehicle, but would not submit to a portable breath test on the scene or at jail. He even demanded a drink of water at jail or he would not agree to do a breath test. The subject has a prior DWI conviction from Texas from 2013.

A St. Paul woman, 26, faces up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a maximum $20,000 fi ne for felony burglary, and her accomplice, a Fridley man, 37, faces the same.

The caretaker and a resident of an apartment complex on Grass Lake Place observed the woman loitering around the entrance of an apartment building Oct. 18.

The woman kept loitering until she could follow a resident through the secure door and into the building. After slipping into the building, the woman then let her male accomplice into the building.

The caretaker watched live feed surveillance video as the subjects peered into vehicles in the underground parking lot. At one point the man had a golf club of unknown origin in his hand.

Mustang girls section runners-up to Champlin Park

The Mounds View girls soccer reached the Section 5AA championship game, where they lost to Champlin Park 2-1.

Paige Kalal of the top-seeded Rebels steered two shots past Mounds View’s outstanding goalie Lauren McAlpine in the fi rst half, one of them off a corner kick—no easy feat, as Mounds View allowed only nine goals in 14 matches this season.

Lauren Ballinger had the goal for Mounds View, also in the fi rst half, assisted by Jess Eischens. The Mustangs fi nished 9-3-2.

McAlpine stopped six of eight shots on goal. Champlin Park’s Sarah Martin stopped six of seven.

Kalal had 14 goals and 19 assists to lead Champlin Park (121-1) in scoring. Mallie Mathis had 22 goals.

The Mustang girls scuttled Roseville Area 6-1 in the semifi nals with Ava Westlund and Eischens delivering two goals each and Leah Ban and Lainey Ballinger one each.

Mustang boys XC 8th in unofficial state meet The Mounds View boys cross country team placed eighth among 20 teams — and had three of the top 18 runners — in an unofficial state meet Oct 30.

With all fall state competitions called off this year by the MSHSL, the Twin Cities Running Club organized a state meet and invited the top teams to compete as club teams without their regular coaches. Retired coaches ran the meet, held at Island Pines Golf Course in Atwater.

Prior Lake was champion in the large school division with 89 points, followed by Stillwater 109 and Wayzata 143 among 20 invited teams. Mounds View was eighth with 216, one spot behind conference rival White Bear Lake.

Mounds View was state champion last year and runnerup the year before, but many of its top runners were

seniors. Coach Ross Fleming said it was an “amazing performance” by a team almost completely rebuilt.

Coaching the Mustang boys for the state club meet was the girls' coach, Jimmy McArthur, whose son is their lead runner.

Elliott McArthur, a sophomore, placed ninth in 16:13.

Seven of the eight runners ahead of him were seniors.

The only exception was freshmen Hootie Hage of state champion Prior Lake who was two seconds ahead of McArthur in 11th place.

Matthew Miller hit the chute in 16th place (16:19) and William Skelly was 18th (16:20).

The rest of the lineup was Canton Francisco 106th (17:27), Joseph Otto 107th (17:29), Max DeRosier 122nd (17:55), and Charlie Brody 128th (18:03).

Top Mustang finishes in individual events were fourth-places by Darah Ostrom in diving and Easley in the butterfly. Placing fi fth were Yurttas in individual medley, Schwieters in 50 freestyle, Lynch in 100 freestyle, Schmitzer in 500 freestyle and Wilkes in backstroke.

Mounds View’s girls swim team ended its season with a second-place finish in the Section 4AA meet at Stillwater on Oct. 24.

Stillwater won every event, and had the top three or four in several events, piling up 713 points. Mounds View was best of the rest with 488 points for second among six teams. Roseville was third with 366.

Mounds View broke into the football win column Oct. 30 as quarterback Tate Lahr led a 27-14 victory over CretinDerham Hall at home. Both teams are 1-3.

Lahr hit Cole Standahl for a 28-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to tie the score 7-7, and broke loose for touchdown runs of 21 yards in the second quarter, 45 yards in third quarter and one yard in the fourth quarter.

The senior, who played wide receiver last year, carried 17 times for 110 yards and completed five of 14 passes for 71 yards. He also punted four times for a 36.7 average.

Antoine Voz rushed 12 times for 80 yards. Standahl caught three for 58 yards.

Cretin-Derham Hall scored first on a pass from Luke Floysland to Marsello Mendez from 19 yards. Floysland was 11-for-27 for 118 yards and hit Tre Holleman for a seven-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Mustang cap section title run in soccer with impressive win

The Mounds View soccer team lost its opening match this season and did not pick up a win until the fourth game. But they never lost another match after that opener.

The Mustangs wound up riding their dominant defense all the way to the Section 5AA championship, capped by a 5-1 conquest of top-seeded Champlin Park in the fi nals there Saturday, Oct. 24, after edging St. Paul Central 1-0 in the semifi nals on Wednesday.

“We have had a stingy defense all year, but we were really put to the test on Saturday,” Coach Joe Warren said.

“Champlin Park had some extremely dynamic players up top, who made it tough for our boys to maintain the string of shutouts we had.”

That was the season fi nale, with no state tournament this year due to the pandemic.

Mounds View fi nished 9-4-1 with seven shutouts and just eight goals allowed in 14 games. Anchored by senior goalie Alex Catrine, they came into the fi nals with six consecutive shutouts.

The back liners are seniors Tyler Xiong, Ben Franz and Noah Greer and junior Foster Conlin, backed by senior Ryan Oh and sophomore AJ King.

Finding the net for the Mustangs in the fi nals were Bryce Dullum, Franz, Joseph Swallen, Alex

Gutierrez and Uzair Ahmed.

Five players scoring, Warren said, is “a testament to the level of confidence and chemistry the boys have developed.” Each worked hard for the rest of the team and none were concerned about individual accolades, Warren said. “The boys have a rapport with each other that is not easily attained, and I have only seen it a few times in my career as a coach and player.”

In 11 matches, the Mustangs scored two goals or less.

They did hit the fivemarker three times but usually won with defense.

Champlin Park fi nished 14-2 with 52 goals. The Mustangs limited the Rebels to a goal by Leo Conneh in the fi rst half on what Warren called a well-executed attack.

In the second half, the Mustangs settled in, dealt with the attacks, and were able to gain more ball possession.

The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead on Swallen’s goal in the 58th minute off a direct kick.

“There was relief, but we knew we would have to buckle down to fi nish this game off,” Warren said. And they did, rattling off three goals in the last 10 minutes.

Warren, a former college and pro goalie himself, praised his net-minder, Catrine.

“One of the big things he has done for us late in the season is reading the play and coming off his line to intercept through balls from the opposition,”

Warren said. Against the Rebels, Catrine quelled several threats by diving out for balls at the edge of his box or clearing through balls away with his feet well outside the box. “He has also been a very vocal leader from the back for us.”

In Mounds View’s 1-0 win over St. Paul Central, Dullum scored the lone goal,

off a corner kick, assisted by Ahmed.

Their lone loss came against East Ridge (which fi nished 8-4) by 1-0 in the fi rst game. The Mustangs then tied Woodbury and Stillwater, each 1-1, before breaking into the win column against Cretin-Derham Hall. From that game on, they were 7-0-2.

Kourageous Karter: The boy who lived

Tiffany Goodchild had the perfect pregnancy, but after she arrived at the hospital things quickly spun out of control. “It was a whirlwind. We decided to schedule a C-section, then it turned into an emergency C-section. When (Karter) was born, my husband (Kole) hadn’t even made it into the room, it happened so quickly,� said the Hugo resident.

When Karter was born June 26, 2016, he was not breathing. Karter had lost 80% of his blood in utero, which was later determined to be caused by a spontaneous fetal maternal hemorrhage. Because he lost so much blood and was oxygen-deprived, he developed a brain injury called hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). HIE is brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation and limited blood flow. “We were told, ‘He is going to have no quality of life, there is no hope, there is no chance; when do you want to remove life-support?’� Goodchild recalled. “It was so devastating. I was in such shock and grief.�

Goodchild and her husband were told that Karter would be dependent on machines and that he would never be able to open his eyes, cry, swallow, eat, breathe, see, hear or walk. They were told their only option was to remove life support.

Five days after Karter was born, he was taken off life-support. “I was holding him when they ripped the tubing out of his body. They said it could be seconds, minutes, hours ‌ but the only outcome they gave us was death,â€? she said. “Minutes turned into hours and we were so thankful to have time. We didn’t understand that dying is a process, we thought he was going to stop living at any moment.

For two days, we were just on eggshells, we wanted to soak up every second with him. It didn’t feel real.�

Karter remained stable for two days. At that time, the couple was given the option to remain in the hospital or take the baby home for hospice care. Although it was a tough decision, the Goodchilds decided to bring Karter home. “I remember holding him in the back seat as my husband drove and thinking ‘don’t die, don’t die,�

Goodchild recalled.

After one week at home, Karter’s eyes opened, and he started crying and screaming.

Goodchild recognized the signs

that her son wanted to eat, so she called their medical team to see if she could feed him. She was told she could try it, but Karter might not be able to swallow and could choke and die. She was also told that feeding him could prolong their hospice efforts. “As a mom, my instincts were screaming to feed him. Now that I have reflected and I understand what happened to us, essentially the team was convincing me to starve him to death. That is essentially how he would die, he would just not get nutrition and his body would fade away and that would be the end,� Goodchild explained. “As a mom, if he doesn’t want to eat, I’m not going to feed him, but if my baby is screaming and wants to eat, I want to feed him. “It was so excruciating as a mom to try to figure this all out.�

Goodchild followed her instinct to feed him, and he ate. Karter graduated from hospice care at 6 months of age, but the couple was told he might not live to his first birthday. Just before his first birthday, Karter was no longer able to eat and became dependent on a gastronomy tube. “Once we made it to Karter’s first birthday, we were no longer focusing on his death, we were focusing on his life. We are going to give him the very best life possible, and so that has really been my mission as his mother, and for our entire family,� Goodchild said. “We had to undo a lot of the trauma. It took a lot of work on our end, reeducating ourselves, finding the right professionals to help us understand what all of this meant.�

Goodchild became determined to be a resource to other mothers who found themselves in a similar situation.

Giving back to other families She launched a nonprofit organization called the Kourageous Karter Foundation. “I had all these aspirations and ideas, and then COVID-19 hit,� she said.

Though Goodchild has not been able to pursue many of the mission projects she has in mind, she has posted a robust collection of resources on the nonprofit’s website for families who are trying to navigate through similar journeys. “I feel like my purpose now is to help other moms who are in my boat,� Goodchild said. “I feel the most empowered when I am connecting with other families and helping, and the only way I know how to do that is to share what I have learned.� Kole added, “Many

people were there for us when we needed it the most. Now that we are further along in our journey, and this has become more of a normal part of our everyday lives, it’s important to make a positive impact on those who may be just starting theirs.�

One project Goodchild plans to accomplish this year is paying for photographs for a family. “We had a photographer who came to the NICU and took photos of (Karter) every day. She captured every single moment, and (the photos) are something I cherish.

We didn’t know how much time we had. It was such a blur.� Goodchild recalled.

Another mission of the nonprofit is to create an all-inclusive playground nearby. Goodchild has agreed to be a part of the recently formed stakeholder group to help design and plan for the playground upgrades at Lions Park in Hugo. “If you find yourself raising a child with a severe neurological condition, we want to be a place of hope and encouragement. We want to make sure that you feel like you are not alone, you are seen and there are so many great organizations and resources out there,� Goodchild said.

John and Deb McGuire worked their way through college in the restaurant business and after many years in the corporate world and a move to WBL, they found themselves missing the bars and grills of their old St. Paul neighborhood. They started thinking there were people in town who would like a neighborhood place to get a beverage and bite to eat. In Thanksgiving week 1998 their dream became reality and “The Square” opened with just 45 seats inside and 20 outside. John laughed as he remembers barley having money to purchase those inexpensive director’s chairs from Pier I. There was crochet and bocce as well.

Their goal was a gathering spot where community members could gather and rub elbows, whether in suits or faded jeans. The focus was not to turn tables rapidly, but rather a comfortable gathering place where patrons could congregate in a casual, fun environment. They also led the way helping establish a vibrant live music scene in WBL and specialized in small and unique breweries before the craft beer trend took hold. Many nationally known musicians have performed there over the years.

Their concept was a success and by 2002 they

did their first expansion into what is known as the “South Room”. Originally it was to be an outdoor bar, but regulations caused them to simply enclose that space and develop the popular current outdoor patio. In 2007 they expanded again, this time doubling the size of the kitchen to accommodate their growing customer base and adding the “East Room”.

The McGuire’s have long been enthusiastic supporters of the community, consistently contributing to charitable causes and events.

The community has reciprocated as well.

They’re humbled by the outpouring of support they’ve received during the COVID crisis. Their Take-Out program was already well developed, and they hope that will supplement their Dinein business this winter. They’re running daily themed specials monthly. White Bear natives will remember the Conoco-Phillips station on the corner of 4th St. & Hwy. 61. Brian Farrell and partners purchased the property and built the beautiful Manitou Station restaurant in 2009. Today the name has changed to Manitou Grill & Event Center, and Farrell is the sole proprietor, but the beautiful space remains. The spacious restaurant with intricate woodwork was modeled after the traditional pubs of Ireland.

The theme and menus have changed over the years, “but the restaurant has gone back to their roots”, says GM Ross Carter.

Carter, a native of WBL, spent two decades in LA in the hospitality trade before moving his family back to White Bear Lake for the high quality of life here. Chef Jason Gunderson and team have brought back many of the Irish dishes that Manitou has become known for: Shepard’s Pie, Fish & Chips, & their Signature Scotch Eggs. They have a classic style Lobster Roll that Carter says is a fan favorite. Bar Manager Laura Zender keeps the beverage program fresh with 16 beers on tap and a craft cocktail menu that is always changing.

For years, the Pub has been a top spot for live music in the area. After a hiatus, Carter and Farrell had put together an awesome lineup for 2020, only to be put on hold due to COVID. They hope to start back up again when it is safe again.

Carter feels the Grill is well suited to withstand the challenges of COVID due to their large space, where they can safely seat more patrons, and technology which enables contactless payment.
