In his eighth season as a snowplow driver, Jon Yankovec starts work at 2 a.m. when snow falls in Shoreview.

He receives a one-hour warning by phone but he usually already knows

the nights he’ll need to plow, he said while freshening up his plowing skills at a training at the state fairgrounds this month. He drives from his house in Coon Rapids to a Ramsey County garage near Hamline Avenue and Highway 96 to start up the plow.

“I get to work as soon as I can,” he

said. The goal is to beat the rush hour traffic. Then he takes a rest and replows after rush hour.

He has 17 routes of Ramsey County roads, mostly in the Shoreview area — Lexington Avenue, Victoria Street, Hamline Avenue, County Road J, County Road I, County Road F....

Shoreview is quite young — 61 years old — compared to its sister city, Einhausen, Germany.

Einhausen celebrated its 1,250th anniversary this year.

Seven people from Shoreview visited Einhausen for five days in August to celebrate the sister city’s milestone, said Bill Kiehnbaum, president of the Shoreview Einhausen Sister City Association. They attended a welcome ceremony to exchange gifts, a parade, light shows and band concerts. The Shoreview group was joined by the 298th U.S. Army Band, which played with Einhausen’s MusikCorps at the celebration. The band was taking a reunion tour of Germany.

This fall, the knitters have been making hats for Hats for the Homeless, which will be delivered to shelters primarily in the Twin Cities.

The group is also making items to sell at the Friends of the Ramsey County Library’s annual fundraiser.

So far, the group knitted 74 baby hats for the American Heart Association; 66 hats and booties and a blanket for Jack’s Basket, which supports children born with Down syndrome; 55 items for Bundles of Love, which provides handmade items for newborns in need; six chemo caps; and five blankets to welcome refugees through the International Institute of Minnesota.

Holiday home tour raises funds for children in need North Oaks Guild I will continue its longstanding tradition of hosting its annual Holiday Home Tour and Boutique the weekend before Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17.

“People come from all over to attend the ‘North Oaks Holiday Home Tour and Boutique’ to kick off their holiday season.

We hope everyone will join us this year for a fun event to raise money for a great cause — Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota,” said Lisa Kelly, president of North Oaks Children’s Hospital Association Guild I. This year’s event, entitled “Home for the Holidays,” features tours of beautiful North Oaks homes, each professionally decorated for the holiday season, as well as a boutique and luncheon. These designers volunteer their time by sharing their design skills and expertise, along with their mer-

chandise products, to decorate these homes for this cause. All vendors contribute a portion of their proceeds to the fund-raising program.

Guests are transferred to the homes by bus from the North Oaks Golf Club, 54 East Oaks Road. Buses depart throughout the day. Upon returning to the club, attendees can shop the holiday boutique featuring many unique items from local artisans.

The guild has been contributing to children in need for more than 50 years.

“As the original guild, founded in 1962, we are proud to continue our support for Children’s Hospital Association,” Kelly said. The annual Home Tour and Boutique event has raised between $30,000 and $40,000 each year since its inception in 1962. North Oaks Guild I has contributed more than $1 million to the Children’s Hospital Association.

Home tour tickets cost $35 and can be purchased at northoaks chaguild1.org or at the door. All proceeds benefit Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota.

The purchase price of tickets is 100 percent tax-deductible.

Tours run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nov. 16 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17. The boutique is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 16 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 17.

This year, the guild is also adding the North Oaks Holiday Gala to its fundraising efforts, formerly known as the Festival of Trees. This event, to be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Nov. 17, includes dinner, dancing, champagne and scotch bars and a silent auction on the décor, trees, centerpieces and garlands. Tickets are $125 and are available at northoakschaguild1.org.

Call for distracted driving reforms Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson issued a report last month calling on state policymakers to enact legislation to require hands-free only cell phone use while driving, to increase the penalties for texting while driving, and to require the suspension of the driver’s licenses of repeat offenders.

“We need to change the culture around distracted driving and make it not be okay for people to do this. Drunken driving, which was once largely condoned, is now stigmatized. We should apply some of the successful drunken driving reform measures to distracted driving, which has become an epidemic on the roads,” said Swanson.

Calling distracted driving an “epidemic,”Swanson was joined by police, business and labor groups, and families who lost loved ones to distracted driving. She said her fi ndings were based on an assessment of how other states have handled the issue. wanson’s office also examined texting while driving charges in Minnesota and noted that the problem is not limited to the youngest drivers. In 2017, drivers age 16-29 represented 22 percent of drivers but 47 percent of texting while driving charges; drivers age 30-49 represented 33 percent of drivers but 42 percent of texting while driving charges.

Swanson’s office — which has handled over 15,000 driver’s license revocation cases after impaired driving arrests in the last three years — studied the distracted driving reforms utilized in other states. Her report makes the following recommendations.

•Prohibit handheld cell phones while driving. The Legislature should require hands-free cell phone use while driving. If enacted, Minnesota would be the 17th state to do this. This would improve driver safety and make it easier for police

to distinguish whether a driver is making a call or texting.

• Increase penalties for texting while driving. The Legislature should increase the fi ne for fi rsttime texting while driving to $175. Minnesota law currently imposes a fi ne of $50 (the same as fi ne imposed for driving below the posted limit). The Legislature should also increase the fi nes for repeat offenders, using a graduated schedule like many other states (i.e. the fi ne for a second offense is more than the fi rst, etc.)

• Suspend licenses of repeat offenders. The Legislature should require the mandatory suspension of a driver’s license for repeat texting while driving offenses. Several states already do this. For example, Maine requires the imposition of 30, 60, and 90 day suspensions for second, third, and fourth time offenders, respectively. Minnesota should follow suit.

Social Security announces 2.8 percent benefit increase for 2019 Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 67 million Americans will increase 2.8 percent in 2019, the Social Security Administration announced last month.

The 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2019. Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based

on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $132,900 from $128,400.

For the fi rst time this year, most people who receive Social Security payments will be able to view their COLA notice online through their “My Social Security” account. Swanson notes that distracted driving results in over 3,000 deaths and 400,000 injuries annually in the United States. In Minnesota, there are more than 50 deaths each year in proven cases of distracted driving, although the actual number of deaths and injuries is likely much higher. From 2013 to 2017, 265 people were killed in Minnesota and 1,080 suffered serious injuries in distracted driving crashes. One in five crashes resulting in death or serious injury during that period was caused by distracted driving.

Important day in world history

T

he dedication of a soldier’s memorial in downtown White Bear Lake Nov. 11 prompted a little research into the meaning of Armistice Day and the end of World War I. The historic signing at Compiegne, France, took place at 11 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month 100 years ago. About 17 million soldiers and civilians died in the five-year conflict; 116,000 of them American.

After a German U-boat sunk a U.S. Naval ship, President Woodrow Wilson appeared before Congress and declared war. It was April 1917.

Several years earlier the Germans Feeling sunk the British ocean liner Lusitania with hundreds of American pasInspired sengers on board; turning the tide of Deb Neutkens public opinion against Germany.

The Minnesota History Center had an exhibit last year on the Great War, providing some interesting stats: When the war started, the United States population was 103 million.

About one in seven people were foreign born and 90 percent were white. The median age was 25. Women made up one-fifth of the paid workforce and the average manufacturing job paid 53 cents an hour. Just one in 10 Americans paid any income tax. Fewer than one in four adults owned an automobile and about a third of American households had a telephone.

My grandfather was one of the immigrants who fought in France. I don’t remember him, he died when I was four, but his doughboy helmet and a horsehair blanket he had on his Army cot are still in the family.

All I know about his service is he was a trench runner, carrying messages from one trench to the next, dodging bullets, I assume. No one is left to tell his story.

Memories of the destruction caused by global conflict can fade as time passes — certainly after 100 years. There are no living veterans of World War I; the last died in 2012. No one who was there can tell the world what it was like at Verdun or the Marne or the Somme and what we should learn.

“There’s a danger that these events become so distant in our memories they become abstract,” Harvard professor Nicholas Burns told USA Today in 2014.

“That’s why it’s vital to study history.”

World War I has been referred to as the first modern war because many of the technologies we now associate with military conflict—machine guns, tanks, aerial combat and radio communications— were introduced on a massive scale.

Actually the year 1918 was momentous for many reasons. The suffrage movement culminated in a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote. There were rumblings of prohibition hoping it would end the disease of alcoholism. Millions of women entered the workforce to support men who went to war and replace those who never returned.

But the last major story of 1918 was the Spanish flu.

The first global war helped spread one of the world’s deadliest global pandemics, the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 20 to 50 million people worldwide.

By the end of 1918, more American soldiers died of influenza than were killed on the battlefield.

Research by the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society (WBLAHS) on the pandemic in the pages of the Press found there were requirements for flu victims. Funerals became private as the only thing that contained the flu was isolation. Caskets had to be closed and flu victims buried within three days.

There were no services, no gatherings, no wakes.

WWI shaped the world in which we live, but alas, it was not the war to end all wars.

The public is invited to a free WBLAHS presentation on the Great War 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Ramsey County Library, 2150 Second St. in White Bear Lake. The historical society will discuss the impact of WWI on those who fought and those who supported them from the home front.

Immune System Definition Your immune system is your body’s defense against infection and illness. It recognizes when cells enter your body that do not belong there, such as bacteria and viruses, and will fight against them to keep you from getting sick.

How do you boost your immune system? There are several ways that you are able to keep your defenses in tip-top shape. Following a healthy lifestyle will certainly be a good start. Making sure you have a healthy, well-balanced diet, and getting enough exercise and sleep, and managing stress, are all ways to support your immune system and keep it running smoothly yearround.

1. Diet — Diet is extremely powerful in aiding your immune system. Many foods have different vitamins and minerals in them that are beneficial to your body’s defense system. Eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, and meat will help maintain proper function.

2. Exercise — There’s no doubt that exercise is influential to many aspects of our health. Exercise promotes efficient blood circulation, which keeps the cells of the immune system moving so that they can effectively do their job. Just 20 minutes of exercise can have an anti-inflammatory response in the body.

Physical activity helps flush out toxins and bacteria in your lungs and airways. Which may reduce your chance of getting the flu or common cold. Lucky for us, moderate activity a few times a week can do the trick.

3. Manage stress — Stress overload causes your body to produce more of the hormone cortisol. In short spurts, such as during intense exercise, cortisol can produce an anti-inflammatory response, but chronic stress can cause your body to get used to the cortisol, making it prone to inflammation.

Managing your stress with things like meditation or yoga can help reduce your cortisol levels, thus improving your immune system.

4. Get enough sleep (turn off your phone) — Lack of sleep no doubt impacts your immune system. Sleep helps your body recover, as well, so if you aren’t getting enough of it, your body will suffer.

During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines.

Certain cytokines are used to fight

infection and inflammation, but lack of sleep can decrease the production of these proteins, making it harder to fight off illness. Sleep is also important to your circadian rhythm, which is a major factor in your immune health.

So, silence your phone, pull the curtains and create an environment that fosters sleep.

5. Stay hydrated and avoid excessive alcohol — Water is essential for our body to function properly. The recommended amount of water is eight glasses per day. Along with more water intake, alcohol consumption should be lessened. Alcohol can disrupt the circadian rhythm, causing a loss of sleep, which can impact our overall health. It can also suppress the activity of white blood cells whose key function is to do battle on the front lines with germs and other illness-causing factors.

6. Take preventative steps — While you should definitely incorporate all of the above aspects into consideration when trying to support your immune system, there are definitely smaller things you can do to prevent unwanted illnesses or infections. Make sure your house is clean and sanitized. Wiping down surfaces with disinfectant wipes can inhibit bacteria and viruses from getting on countertops where you place food or utensils that end up in your mouth. Also, be sure to wash your hands frequently during cold and flu season, as well as year-round.

During the flu season, a flu shot is definitely recommended.

Statutes of limitation “You snooze, you lose.”

T

hat phrase, in some respects, summarizes the legal doctrine known as the Statute of Limitations.It holds that if you wait too long to begin your lawsuit, you lose the right to do so — even if you had the best legal claim that ever existed.

Why would this be?

Most folks understand the legal system’s focus on the importance of a neutral and impartial method of resolving disputes.Intertwined with that is the goal of resolving disputes in a reasonably expeditious manner.

As disputes age, evidence tends to disappear. As time passes, memories fade and witnesses become harder to fi nd.The best and most reliable evidence can normally be found closer in time to the event which leads to a lawsuit.

The idea of a time limit to bring a claim in court exists for both civil lawsuits and in criminal cases - where the state wishes to bring charges

against someone.

Sometimes an event can lead to both civil and criminal cases.

Let’s say you buy a car at Sneaky Pete’s Car Sales (at the corner of Scam Avenue and Fraud Street). Pete Movers and promises, in writing, the car has a Shakers that clean title, is in perfect working condition, Greg Galler and, even though it is 20 years old, the 15,000 miles on the odometer are accurate.

You pay him and drive away - but you don’t drive very far.

The car breaks down. A mechanic tells you that the odometer has been tampered with, the transmission is in shambles, and the engine is worn out.The mechanic estimates the car has over 400,000 miles on it. You try to register the car and find that it has a “salvage” title and has been reported as stolen. Sneaky Pete refuses to

You would likely do pretty well in a civil suit. However, you can’t wait too long to bring your claim. In Minnesota, a clock starts to run on your claim as soon as it arises. In this case, that might be from the date of the sale or from the date when you fi rst knew, or should have known, of the breach of contract. Minnesota’s civil Statutes of Limitation vary quite a bit depending on the type of lawsuit.

They can be as short as 2 years or as long as 6 years - with others being set at 3 or 4 years.

Sneaky Pete might also be in jeopardy of being charged criminally.

Criminal Statutes of Limitations typically vary from 3 years to 9 years except that for murder the clock never

runs out. For either civil or criminal cases, there are also a variety of circumstances that can cause the clock to be paused or “tolled.” Bottom line: It is a fairly complicated area of the law.

If you have a legal claim, it would be wise to pursue your legal remedies in a timely fashion. You don’t want to sleep on your rights only to wake up and find that they are gone.

Minnesota students continue to outperform the nation on ACT Minnesota students again topped the nation on the ACT college entrance exam, among the 19 states where 90 percent or more students took the college entrance exam, earning a composite score of 21.3. Nationally, 55 percent of 2018 graduates took the ACT, earning an average composite score of 20.8. Minnesota’s overall score was down 0.2 points from 2017, but up slightly from 2016, when Minnesota fi rst opened access to 17,000 additional students by providing the test to juniors in high schools statewide.

“Thousands of Minnesota students are showing us that they are graduating high school with the skills they need to be successful in their careers or college experiences,” said Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. “It is our goal that students are well prepared for their next step in life, whether it is securing their fi rst job or attending the college of their choice. Minnesotans should be very proud of their students, and the educators who are helping them succeed.”

In 2018, 30 percent of Minnesota graduates met all four ACT college-readiness benchmarks, compared to 27 percent of students nationally, meaning they are likely prepared for the rigor of college-level coursework. Also in 2018, 28 percent of Minnesota students were likely to attain the Gold ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate or higher, compared to 26 percent nationally. Earning a gold certificate translates to having the skills for 93 percent of jobs from the ACT JobPro database, which has over 21,000 jobs profi led.

ACT’s report also shows that 27,188 of Minnesota’s 2018 graduates taking the ACT two or more times had an average composite score of 23.7, which is 4.4 points higher than the 34,065 graduates who took the test only once. While Minnesota schools offer the ACT at no cost to students who are unable to pay, ACT also provides fee waivers to students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, which would cover the cost for those wishing to take it again and better their score. Yet, more than a quarter (27 percent) of Minnesota students who qualified for fee waivers did not use them.

“In Minnesota, we have worked to eliminate barriers between our students and access to postsecondary education,” continued Cassellius. “I’d like to see more students taking advantage of these fee waivers to improve their scores significantly by taking the test a second time without

incurring any fees. This is important to improve equitable access to career and college for all Minnesota students. It is my hope that more schools will encourage students to take it again in their senior year after they have another year or two of learning under their belts.”

ACT releases the Condition of College and Career Readiness report annually, which includes ACT score results from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

NEW BRIGHTON/ARDEN HILLS SUPERFUND SITE RAMSEY COUNTY, MINNESOTA PUBLIC NOTICE COMMENCEMENT OF FIVE-YEAR REVIEW NOV. 2018 The U.S. Army, in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) are conducting a review of the remedies selected for the New Brighton/Arden Hills Superfund Site, which includes the former Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP). The purpose of the review is to confirm that the selected remedies continue to protect human health and the environment. The review will be presented in a draft report to be issued before the end of Mar. 2019. Another public notice will be published after the final report is issued. Once complete, the report will be available for public review at the TCAAP document repository: 4761 Hamline Avenue, Arden Hills, Minnesota 55112. The site was placed on the National Priorities List in 1983 and includes soil and shallow groundwater contamination on TCAAP and deep groundwater contamination both on and off TCAAP. Remedies were selected through Records of Decision (RODs) in 1992, 1993, and 1997, and along with subsequent ROD modifications are available for review at the TCAAP document repository. For soil, the remedies include soil vapor extraction; excavation, stabilization, and off-site disposal; construction of soil covers; and land use controls. For groundwater, the remedies include pump-and-treat systems, monitored natural attenuation, and land use controls. RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce reported the following incidents:

North Oaks • A package delivered to an address on Monarch Way on Oct. 20 was never received, according to the would-be recipient. The package contents were valued at $50.

• The rear window of a vehicle was smashed out sometime Oct. 24 in the 800 block of Village Center Drive, and a duffle bag containing makeup, clothing and textbooks went missing. There are currently no suspects.

The vehicle was seen northbound at Victoria Street at County Road E the afternoon of Oct. 24. The caller was unable to provide a plate number. Deputies checked the area with negative results.

Shoreview • Deputies arrived the evening of Oct. 23 at the scene of a domestic argument over a cell phone in the 5900 block of Birchwood Drive. The man, no age given, claimed that he took the phone away from his wife when she slapped him and grabbed his groin area. The wife, age 46, denied the accusations. A pair of juvenile witnesses laid low. No injuries. No arrests.

• Vandals littered a Peterson Place yard on the night of Oct. 26 with eggs, toilet paper, plastic forks and rubber bands. There are currently no suspects.

• All of the windows on a Pontiac G6 were shattered overnight Oct. 24 in the 3500 block of Owasso Street.

The loss, after insurance, was estimated at $600. No suspects, but video of the area is under review.

• A Stone Lake, Wisconsin, man walking his dogs at North Oaks and East Pleasant Lake roads the afternoon of Oct. 28 reported an attack by a loose canine. The dog

• A caller reported seeing an orange Dodge Charger matching the description of a vehicle possibly related to the Jayme Closs/Barron County Amber Alert in Wisconsin.

• A 30-year-old local man reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle parked in the 4900 block of Turtle Lane overnight Oct. 26, making off with the prescription schedule II stimulant Adderall while ignoring other items of value in the vehicle. No suspects.

• A pair of kayaks were taken from a dock in the backyard of a residence on Woodbridge Street sometime in the past three weeks, the owner told deputies on Oct. 26. The kayaks were described as a 9-foot 2006 green Olde Towne and a 9-foot red and yellow model. The total loss was $1,000.

• A 45-year-old local man reported the theft of chump change from his unlocked vehicle parked in the 600 block of Mound Avenue overnight

Oct. 26. The amount of the loss is unknown.

• A computer and several razors went missing from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 900 block of Monterey Court overnight Oct. 27.

The complainant later found the computer smashed in the street.

• A 60-year-old local man reported that he had been swindled out of $220 in an attempt to purchase Vikings tickets through Craigslist via Zelle. There has been no answer to the phone number provided by the swindler.

• A woman in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue reported Oct. 24 that her daughter had taken her car, a Nissan Rogue with Oklahoma plates, in the pre-dawn hours of Oct. 24. The unlicensed 15-year-old and the vehicle were found four days later at an address in St. Paul.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office announced the rollout of its Community Liaison Officer (CLO) program this month, a partnership that is designed to foster and strengthen mutually trusting relationships between law enforcement and the community.

The CLO program will rely on community-based partners, known as Community Liaison Officers, who live and work in Ramsey County’s varied and diverse communities. These partners will serve as “bridges,” helping to facilitate open and transparent communication, cooperation, and collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office and the communities it serves.

A team of three CLOs has already signed on to partner with the Sheriff’s Office: they are Samakab Hussein, Chia Lor and Mai Lor. The CLO program will soon expand to 10 to 12 community-based partners.

In addition to serving as bridges, CLOs will continue the efforts of the already-established Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office Community Circle to expand dialogue with diverse communities surrounding racial and gender equity, mental health support and pathways to employment.

Shoreview Library Branch Manager Carol Jackson about potentially holding a onetime charity knitting event at the library. Instead, Jackson encouraged her to start an ongoing group. Boyer decided to do so because she craved a connection to her community and wanted to do something to help her neighbors.

The group has a core of dedicated knitters who work on the projects at home as well, Boyer said. Many of the knitters live in the Shoreview area and enjoy both the social and giving aspects of the group.

North Oaks resident Susan Miller said she loves meeting other knitters and enjoys coming to the library in lieu of a shop because she isn’t tempted to buy $100 in yarn. “This is a safe place to come and knit,” she said. “It’s fun to just knit for other people.”

“Your family has got all the hats, scarves, mittens and afghans … more than they could ever use,” added Shoreview resident Janice Hustvet.

Boyer said she loves knitting for babies, especially those who are in need. She wrote a knitting pattern book 15 years ago, Nursery Rhyme Knits.

Shoreview resident Kathy Giguere attended a recent evening after seeing a flyer in the library. She brought along an old knitting book, some needles and began to get back into the pastime she had tucked away long ago. “It’s been years since I knit,” she noted.

The group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays in the book club room. The group is open to all skill levels. “We encourage anyone who is interested to come check it out,” Boyer said. People can also drop off donations of handmade items at the group.

SNOWPLOW: Shoreview driver named state’s snowplow champion FROM PAGE 1

job,” he noted. He encourages drivers to stay far away from plows for everyone’s safety.

He’s been plowing in the Shoreview area for six years. Last year, he was the Minnesota Snowplow “Roadeo” champion for being the best at an obstacle course at the St. Cloud Public Works Facility.

The course is similar to the SPOT (Snowplow Operations Training) course at the state fairgrounds, where plowers for the cities of St. Paul, Minneapolis and Hennepin County trained last month. Four new Ramsey County employees were among the about 50 new snowplow drivers being trained.

Ramsey County plows 292 miles of roads, mostly in the suburbs but also some routes in St. Paul, said Maintenance Engineer Jerry Auge, a White Bear Lake Area High School alum.

The county has 28 plows and two graders. There is about 40 staff that take care of the roads.

In the spring, summer and fall, staff continues to work for the county on other projects, such as paving, mowing or fi xing guardrails, Yankovec said.

Centerville resident invents solution for leaf woes

CENTERVILLE — Day after day, Glen Simonson was fed up with wasting time and putting stress on his body while picking up leaves from his yard and garden.

“It was really a pain. After bending down and picking them up and bending down and picking them up, by the end of the day my back was sore.

It took a long time, and I was tired of it,” he said.

“I started to think about how I could make something that would hold the bag open, make it easier to get leaves in and yet be portable.”

Simonson, a longtime resident of Centerville, was determined to come up with a solution.

After several iterations, Simonson developed a product he was happy with—GOBAGIT. GOBAGIT is an American-made product that holds open bags of different sizes and materials and attaches to a hand cart for easy mobility. It can be wheeled around your yard, workshop or worksite to easily clean up messes while reducing stress to your back and body. Once a bag is full, it simply wheels to the curb, compost site or roll-off dumpster.

“There certainly are other things out there that you can collect leaves with, but so many of them fall short,” Simonson explained. “Just the other day, I was walking down the street and there were three people trying to fi ll one bag. Two people were down on their hands and knees trying to scrape the leaves in while the other was holding the bag open.”

In addition to leaves, Simonson said the product has also helped him clean his garage, which is often full of sawdust from woodworking. GOBAGIT also reduces waste, by allowing bags to be reused.

It also works with biodegradable bags.

“When I would go to the compost facility, I noticed all the discarded plastic bags that were being tossed after homeowners dumped their waste,” he said.

GOBAGIT can be assembled in minutes, Simonson said, and if a customer prefers to purchase it already assembled, he will do it for a small fee of a few dollars.

With Simonson’s new invention, perhaps people can spend a little less time picking up leaves off the ground so they can look up and enjoy the fall colors.

Mounds View also had junior Will Sacay in 32nd place (16:12) and junior Alec Nelson in 65th (16:28) for counting scores. Mustang senior Nehemiah Gain was 76th (16:37) and eighth-grader Elliot McArthur 87th (16:41) among 172 runners. McArthur was the youngest runner in the field.

“All seven ran relatively close to their personal record,” Fleming said. “It’s very difficult to get a PR there because the course is so challenging.”

In team scoring, Streit was fifth, Hessini 12th, Sokolowski 17th, Sacay 23rd and Nelson 42nd.

Streit said he and Hessini both plan to run in college but don’t know where yet.

“We both used to play basketball but we quit for running,” said Streit.

The Mustangs ran six mornings a week over the summer, Streit said. “I ran about 500 miles and many of the guys were over 400 miles.”

Edina, led by individual runner-up Maxwell Manley (15:54), had a 2-9-18-2732 scorecard in team placements. The Hornets captured the first state cross country championship for a school that’s won over 160 titles in virtually every sport.

The individual champion was Roseville Area senior Acer Iverson in 15:14.9.

Mounds View matched its top finish in an excellent boys cross country history, placing runner-up in the state meet Saturday, Nov. 3, with two allstaters and another who just missed.

Edina was Class AA champion with 88 points, followed by Mounds View with 99, Wayzata 112, Stillwater 122, Red Wing 139 and Forest Lake 208 for the top six among 16 entrants at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

“Any time your whole team can run that well with all seven guys, you’re happy,” coach Ross Fleming said. “We had five (counting scores) run really well. We did that once before (in 1999), when we got second.

“We are very pleased with second place. It could easily have been third, or first, but any time you get on the podium is a good thing, even if you’re favored to win it. State is whole different world, a season unto itself, and you are always grateful.”

Mustang senior Austin Streit placed ninth in 15:42. Also making all-state was senior Lukas Hessini in 18th place (16:01). Junior Finn Sokolowski placed 26th (16:05). The top 25 are all-state.

“I’m very satisfied with our team finish. I hoped for a little more individually,” said Streit, who moved up from 14th a year ago. “I definitely left it all out

Fleming noted that his team finished just seven points behind Edina in a big meet at Milaca earlier in the season on a day when his 4-5 guys did not run as strongly as they did at state, but Edina still held them off. The coach saluted Edina for putting together a very strong top five at the biggest meet.

“We did beat Wayzata, though, for the first time in I don’t know how many years,” Fleming said. “We don’t face them in any other meets during the

season, just at state.”

The Mustangs moved up from a fifth-place finish last year. Streit made all-state for the second time, rising five notches from 14th. Hessini moved up 28 spots from 46th, Sokolowski 127 spots from 151st and Sacay 62 spots from 94th.

The Mustangs, coached by Fleming since 1986, have placed second twice, third, fourth twice, and fifth four times.

Mounds View tennis placed 4th in state Mounds View girls tennis, with underclassmen in eight of 10 slots, placed fourth in the state Class AA tennis tournament Oct. 22-23.

The Mustangs (21-3) beat Eagan 5-2, then lost to champion Edina 6-1 in the semifinals and to Rochester Mayo 4-3 in the third-place match. They fi nished 21-3.

“I am so incredibly proud of this team,” coach Scott Sundstrom said.

“This is the highest Mounds View has finished in a number of years. The girls fought hard and left everything out on the court.

“This is a team who exhibits great sportsmanship, fights for every point, and positively represents their school and community. It was a fantastic season.”

The only seniors are Taylor Trondson and Sarah Tang. Otherwise the roster had two juniors, four sophomores, a freshman and three eighth-graders.

Amanda Diao, eighth-grader at No. 2 singles, was named team MVP. Taylor Trondson, senior, and Paige Trondson, junior, who were state doubles runners-up, got most dedicated and most inspirational, respectively.

Other team awards went to freshmen Molly Austin (most improved) and junior Leah Brandt (courage).

Named all-conference were Diao, both Trondsons, and eighth-graders Katerina Smiricinschi and Emma Sun. Honorable mentions were senior Sarah Tang and sophomore Sanjana Pattanaik.

Lucas Hessini is a strong No. 2 on the Mounds View cross country team that placed second in the state after winning conference and section championships. A senior, he made all-state, finishing 18th in 16:01 on the challenging St. Olaf course Nov. 3, after placing second at sectionals (15:34) and third at conference (15:47).

He was 46th at state in 2017 and moved up 28 spots this year. In track last spring, Hessini’s versatility helped the Mustangs take second in the state in both true-team and MSHSL meets.

SCHOOL BRIEF Media specialist receives innovation award Becky Stouten, library media specialist at Mounds View High School, was honored for her outstanding work and commitment in the field of technology and information media. She was selected to receive the Innovation and Integration Award for 2018 by Information and Technology Educators of Minnesota (ITEM). This

is the highest award presented each year by ITEM to only one educator in the field of information literacy and technology education. The award was presented to Stouten during the Oct. 26 ITEM conference in Alexandria.

Stouten has overseen the transformation of the media center to include a makerspace and created the school’s letter in innovation program.

New Army readiness training center planned ARDEN HILLS — The Minnesota Department of Military Affairs recently awarded Stahl the construction contract for a new 135,000-square-foot Readiness Center in Arden Hills. Construction of the $37.9 million division headquarters building, as a part of the greater Arden Hills Army Training Site (AHATS), will commence earthwork and utilities this fall and is scheduled for completion in August 2020.

The new Readiness Center will house offices, classrooms, training facilities and unit administrative spaces for the 34th Infantry Division and is expected to be a LEED Silver-certified building.

“Stahl is honored and excited to return to AHATS and be part of this great project,” said Bill Scherling, Stahl’s director of project management.

“As an Army combat veteran, this project has significant interest for me and we are proud to be a part of making this state-of-the-art training and readiness facility a reality. This facility will greatly improve the division’s ability to train and prepare units for their combat and support missions.”

Stahl will work alongside Leo A. Daly Architects for this project. A ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony was held this fall. Representatives from Leo A. Daly, the Minnesota Army National Guard, and Stahl were present.

“This project will represent current thinking in areas that support mission readiness, training, technology, sustainability, energy conservation and secure workplace environments. The design provides state-of-the-art facilities for those who protect, aid and defend the freedoms we enjoy,” said Matt Johnson, managing principal at Leo A. Daly’s Minneapolis office. “We are excited to break ground on a facility that embraces the storied past, celebrates our sustainable future and supports the important mission of Minnesota’s own 34th Infantry Red Bull Division.”

The grand festival went on for two weeks, but Einhausen has been celebrating in various ways all year long.

The group stayed in host homes in the community of 6,000 where there are no hotels or motels, Kiehnbaum said. “When we go there, it is part of

the cultural immersion and sister city relationship.

We always stay with host families in that community or in that immediate area around there.”

Einhausen was fi rst mentioned in historical records in 768 AD. It sits along the Weschnitz River at the foot of the Bergstrasse Mountains in the state of Hessen. It is the fi fth time Kiehnbaum has traveled to the city.

The formal sister city relationship between Einhausen and Shoreview began 15 years ago, but its

roots began in 1989 when a group of north suburban high school students visited Einhausen on a tour arranged by German teacher Cheryl Wason.

Five years later, the president of the Einhausen Partnership Club suggested starting a sister city partnership with a city in Minnesota.
