Lifelong Shoreview resident turns 90

Pat Cunningham, a lifelong resident of Shoreview, recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a socially distanced parade. Mayor Sandy Martin led the parade of 33 cars, filled with Cunningham’s family and friends. Cunningham’s nephew, Mike Cunningham, said that his uncle is “known by all as a faith-filled family man who (has) loved adventure his entire life.�

Thankfully, in Minnesota there are many organizations with resources to help them navigate such challenges.

One of those organizations is MN Adopt, which creates permanent placement for children in Minnesota by providing online resources,

services, support and training. The organization’s mission is to have “zero kids waiting� for loving, lifelong homes. Through raising awareness, providing referrals for families interested in foster care or adoption, and offering education, support and resources, MN Adopt fi nds and strengthens adoptive, foster care and kinship families.

Heather Van Brunt is the manager of MN Adopt’s HELP Program, which provides post-adoption support to Minnesota families. “Our job

is to highlight the resources and support and tailor them to what their needs might be,� she said of the program. “One of the biggest things that we do is connect people to adoption-competent therapeutic resources. We also help people connect to community organizations that might not be labeled as adoption support or postadoption support but still might fit for a particular family at a particular juncture with things that they’re experiencing.�

for families, including those who have adopted or are seeking to adopt children, and so MN Adopt’s operations have had to change somewhat as well. “At fi rst we had a brief period of time where we just didn’t hear from as many families as we thought we would,� Van Brunt said. “This was in March and April when things were new. I think everybody was a little bit more in a frozen kind of mode. But since then, it’s been going back up to previous levels of engagement with families.�

Bethel students ‘embark on crazy unknown journey’ Two area college students decided a “less touristy” study abroad experience in a remote village in India would be more meaningful to them than going to France, Spain, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.

Bethel University senior Emma Harville and junior Brandon Barnaal took a life-changing trip to India in January to help publish Textura, a 136-page magazine. Harville, of Lino Lakes, is a 2018 Centennial High School grad; Barnaal is from Hutchinson, Wisconsin, and currently resides in White Bear Lake.

“I knew it would be different then a lot of other study abroad trips. We only did a couple days of touristy stuff and then reported almost every day,” Harville explained. “I think you could ask anyone on the trip, and they would say that the days that we did touristy stuff were some of worst days of the trip, because we just loved hanging out with the people that we met and building relationships with them.”

Following their arrival in India and a few days of sightseeing, the group of students took a 3 1/2 hour bus ride to Haryana, a remote village situated between New Delhi and the Himalayan mountains.

The students split up into teams made up of reporters, photographers, designers and Indian partners, who served as translators to remove the language barrier. Harville said one of the highlights of reporting was how much time they were able to spend with their subjects.

“Something that we don’t get to do when we are reporting here, is to really spend time with sources and

just hang out with them. Before we started doing the heavy interviewing, we experienced life with them. They would cook us meals in their home and we would just sit with them,” Harville recalled. “We didn’t want it to be this herd of white students from Minnesota dropping in to a remote village and then leaving. It really wasn’t like that at all. We built relationships with everyone we met and really got to know them.”

The students quickly began to discover that many of the stories would be tough to tell — stories of injustice, abuse and poverty.

“The stories that we pulled were heavy hitters, very emotional, gripping stories,” Barnaal explained. “There was a very interesting line that we all had to draw and dance on as we created this. We didn’t want any false representation or any assumptions to be made. We wanted to create a magazine that shed a light into what we experienced and the great stories and the people that we met.”

Harville said her favorite story she wrote was about a woman named Santro, a community leader in her village. “Almost all of the women that we spoke with were in some way abused by their husbands or someone in their family,” she said.

“Santro was super inspiring because she would find ways to support women in her village by helping them get jobs at a child care center, and by encouraging them to stand up to their husbands. She was the strongest woman I have ever met because she just seemed so courageous and not afraid.”

a day to those in need. A quote from that story that stuck with Barnall was, “My wish is to do something for the society. I want to help someone.”

Barnaal explained, “He wakes up in the morning and is just giving.

Just seeing that this guy’s biggest goal was to help others, that was something truly amazing that I was able to fi nd in my story.”

Both Harville and Barnaal learned valuable life lessons on the trip.

“It was a very interesting thing to experience the caste dynamic when we were there, because that was something I learned a little bit about in middle school history class, but I didn’t really think about it still affecting people’s lives,” Harville explained. She recalled a moment when her Indian partner asked her why there had never been a woman president in the U.S. “I remember being like, ‘I don’t know.’

I hadn’t seriously questioned that, I kind of had just always accepted that that was the norm,” she said. “I was struck by her. She was never willing to just accept things. She is from the

lowest caste and she is constantly being treated horribly, but she was never one to accept injustice.”

Harville found herself thinking about that woman and what she would do after the riots and protests broke out after the death of George Floyd.

Barnaal said, “I really learned to let my guard down and be optimistic about the situation. I learned to pull yourself into those uncomfortable situations … and to be present with what is around you.”

Harville will graduate in May. She is not sure exactly what career she will pursue just yet, but she hopes to travel to other places and create something, like a book or magazine.

Barnaal will graduate next year and plans to go into the design field. His dream is to one day open up his own design firm and to help “people see things for what they truly are instead of a monetary value.”

Mounds View Schools Foundation launches giving season For the past nine years, Mounds View Public School staff, district parents and community members have gathered and demonstrated extraordinary generosity through their participation in the flagship fundraising event for Mounds View Schools Education Foundation (MVSEF) - Rock the School House.

The “At Home Edition� was a welcome distraction from the pandemic and offered hundreds in the community an opportunity to help ensure students receive the support they need in these extraordinary circumstances. This year, the event was held online and it kicked off the foundation’s giving season as it is committed to supporting the Mounds View School District’s need for resources that will ensure reliable internet access for students and the necessary technology to support learning whether at home or in school.

Since 1987, the MVSEF has been a leader in philanthropic support for district students.

The foundation takes great pride in this legacy and the impact it has had on students over the years. “As the foundation has evolved, so have the ways we have engaged our community in supporting our efforts,� said Erik Rasmussen, president of the board of trustees for MVSEF, and a graduate of the district. “Although this year’s Rock the School House At Home Edition may have lacked the intensity of 300 people gathered in a single venue, the importance of the dollars raised this year has never been more critical.�

During the online event, hundreds of viewers tuned in to hear about the technological challenges students are facing during this pandemic. “There's an assumption that all students have reliable and capable internet in their home and their place where they're working on their schoolwork,� explained Jeff Ridlehoover, assistant superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools. “We found both within our

district, Mounds View Public Schools, as well as our surrounding districts and in talking to colleagues, that's not always the case,� Ridlehoover noted. “Some of the challenges with technology are multifold, but certainly, this becomes an equity conversation,� said Chris Lennox, superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools. “Making sure that all of our students have access to adequate technology, to broadband, to internet access, devices, spaces where they can connect, and then engage with our educational staff to support them in their learning. That is significant.�

Nearly a decade ago, the foundation launched its first

fundraising event, known as Rock the School House. While this event has become synonymous with fun, it has also been the primary source of the foundation’s revenue. “While we are proud of the success of Rock the School House and will continue to host our flagship fundraiser, we are also committed to focusing on the most strategic and sustainable fundraising tool we have — our annual giving program,� said Heather Meyer, executive director for MVSEF. “The annual giving program, by essence of its efficiency, ensures a consistent revenue stream thereby allowing for the strategic direction of resources to important initiatives that impact students.�

Rasmussen said, “A heartfelt thank you to those who have already demonstrated their support by making a donation, but there’s more work to be done. “For those that have yet to contribute, my hope is that you will be inspired to make a gift to help address some of the challenges confronting our students; notably, the need to ensure reliable internet access and the necessary technology to support learning. The foundation has impacted students for over three decades and it strives to continue its work for decades to come.�

President-elect challenges

E NOW HAVE a president-elect who has the great challenge of uniting the country. It may not be possible.

The close election tells me that the battle isn’t over. The letters to the editor will diminish, the yard signs are put away and television commercials will go back to medical remedies and Christmas gifts and things you can’t live without.

For Minnesota and Wisconsin, there were very minor balloting issues. The bar code system prevented voting twice, and the counting began in advance of Election Day, which provided early results without delays.

We worked hard to keep everyone employed and our staff worked hard to shift gears as needed and fill in for each other. Technology also as many could work from home.

IT WILL TAKE time before we know the results the Senate races in Georgia. It seems to me we have a healthier government when it is divided by political parties. History has proven the stock market and the economy does better when no one party controls the presidency, Senate and House of Representatives.

ARE WE AT a point in politics where we need term limits? It appears to me that people are running for office on the national level to grow their wealth rather than serve the best interest of the American people. I also think our government has become so large that it is impossible to maintain accountability.

THIS SUMMER MY wife, Kathy, purchased a Mother of Thousands plant from Deb Urban at Urban Nursery in Vadnais Heights. The succulent produces babies on each leaf. Not being able to throw the babies away, Kathy carefully planted them in small pots and brought them to Florida to distribute to friends. It has become an interesting and fun conversation subject among many who are not familiar with the plant.

‘Buckle up’ America: We’re in for a wild First Amendment ride

uckle up, America. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito may well have pulled the “start” switch on the First Amendment’s legal equivalent of a popular carnival attraction, the Tilta-Whirl — a wild, spinning legislative ride propelled by a revolving wheel of judicial review.

In a speech Nov. 12 to the conservative Federalist Society, Alito offered a list of grievances about the state of individual rights in America, with a special focus on the freedoms of religion and speech.

Alito was very critical of a 5-4 Supreme Court decision this summer that rejected a church’s objection to Nevada’s COVID-19-based restrictions on Movers & attendance at religious services.

Shakers He pointed out that Gene Policinski casinos in that state were limited to 50 percent capacity, while houses of worship were subject to a smaller, flat 50-person limit.

Following the court’s legalization of same-sex marriage, which he opposed, Alito predicted vilification of those opposing the decision. In his speech, Alito claimed that “You can’t say that marriage is a union between one man and one woman. Until very recently, that’s what the vast majority of Americans thought. Now it’s considered bigotry.”

A second justice, Clarence Thomas, has twice this year called for the court to revisit — and perhaps reverse — a landmark 1964 free speech and free press case, New York Times v.

Sullivan, which generally rules out successful defamation lawsuits by political or public persons without evidence of “actual malice.”

And within the First Amendment scholarly community itself, there is growing sentiment that the original 45 words, adopted in 1791, need to be reworked and revised to meet the challenges of a modern, 24/7 globally connected planetary society.

Even the relatively new doctrine of “government speech” is gaining ground — that government itself has free speech rights, as in what slogans are banned from state-issued license plates, or which religious symbols are allowed in public spaces. As it happens, Justice Alito has played both a major role in court decisions advancing the doctrine, but also cautioning against its overuse.

For nearly 100 years, First Amendment law has been largely focused on protecting the free expression of individual viewpoints, particularly those considered “fringe” or “extreme.”

Now in vogue: Claims to a “right” not to hear someone’s views.

Many of these new voices and approaches in the marketplace of ideas echo Alito’s basic pitch: It’s time for conservative views and limits to take over from what they see as overly broad, liberal expansions across the five freedoms.

Keep both hands and feet firmly inside the whirling legal constructs, dear fellow citizens.

And pay close attention to what people are saying in the upcoming debates over balancing our core freedoms with other values.

Hang on through the ride and listen to the debates as if the very meaning and application of the First Amendment for the next generation depends on it — because it will.

City of Philadelphia, involving that city’s attempt to withhold public funds from a Catholic social work group which refuses to consider same-sex couples when placing children for adoption.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress seem intent on reviewing First Amendment rights and special legal protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, now enjoyed by Silicon Valley tech companies. The changes would target social media giants such as Twitter and Facebook and perhaps even attempt to reduce Google’s dominate position among search engines.

Advocates say changes and limits are needed to ensure diverse viewpoints. Removing some or all of those protections, the companies argue, would force them to adopt draconian restrictions on what we freely say online in these 21st century equivalents of the colonial public square.

Congress also is expected to quickly take up other complicated, “First Amendment-ish” aspects around free speech on the web — that is, balancing the need to fight misinformation and distortion of facts online with unfettered access by individuals to this new, electronic version of the public square.

Freedom of the press will continue to be beset by both critics who would diminish its First Amendment protections and those advocates who would save independent American journalism by inserting government into the unprecedented role of at least a partial funder.

COVID-19 cases surge in Minnesota prisons, outbreak among worst in U.S.

Prisons have become a hotbed for COVID-19 as infection rates surge both state and nationwide. Minnesota's correctional facilities are facing one of the worst oubtreaks in the country, recent data shows.

Throughout the U.S., Minnesota's prison system has the sixth-highest COVID-19 infection rate, with 4,051 known cases per 10,000 people—a rate that is 609% higher than Minnesota overall, according to the Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization covering the U.S. criminal justice system. Among prison staff, the rate is 4,107 per 10,000, which is 619% higher than that of the state overall.

As of Dec. 4, the Department of Corrections (DOC) had reported 12 COVID-19 hospitalizations and six deaths among inmates, most recently a man incarcerated at the Moose Lake correctional facility, which houses one of the state's two sex offender treatment programs.

The man's identity has not yet been released, but a news release from the Department of Human Service (DHS) said his family has been notified.

“Losing a loved one is always difficult, but it's especially painful under these circumstances, when the pandemic is claiming so many lives,” said DHS Commissioner Jodi Harpstead.

“Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who will miss him.”

Approximately 740 civilly committed clients receive treatment at Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP) facilities in Moose Lake and St. Peter. There are 18 active cases of COVID-19 in MSOP facilities currently, according to DHS. Throughout Minnesota's correctional

Due to recent spikes in COVID-19 cases, Shoreview has closed all city facilities to the public through Dec. 18.

Recreation activities, events and programs are also canceled.

In a letter to Shoreview residents, Mayor Sandy Martin acknowledged the challenges of the ongoing pandemic.

“I want to thank you for your patience and understanding through the COVID-19 crisis,” Martin said. “I understand that 2020 continues to be a challenging and difficult time for all of us, especially now that we are dialing back activities. Throughout this entire year, Shoreview residents have shown time and time again that we are strong and resilient.”

While buildings remain closed, city staff will be working from home and telecommuting when possible. City Council, Planning Commission and other advisory committee meetings will either be held through teleconferencing or canceled altogether.

Warm, windy temps make slow start for Minnesota deer season

This year’s hunting season had more than a few unexpected variables, but among the most unusual was the weather conditions of the rifle season opener.

Temperatures hovered in the 60s and 70s during the weekend of Nov. 7-9.

Combined with high winds, hunters did not see many deer during opening weekend.

According to Minnesota DNR Big Game Program Leader Barbara Keller, the fi rst two days of opening weekend usually have the highest harvest numbers of the season.

“Those two days were 14 percent less harvestwise compared to last year, but during that latter half of fi rearms deer season, we were able to make up the difference,” Keller said.

The latest data from the DNR website reports 157,126 total deer harvested this year, with a little more than half of that number being mature male deer. Special seasons are ongoing in other parts of the state, and so far are on par with last year’s harvest numbers.

Hunting during COVID-19 Although it was unclear

whether safety precautions related to COVID-19 would affect the 2020 hunting season, Keller said she was unaware of any significant effects on this year’s harvest.

The number of licenses purchased was about the same as last year, but Keller did notice that many hunters purchased their licenses a little earlier in advance this year. By its nature, hunting takes place in wide-open outdoor spaces, which makes social distancing a little easier to manage.

“I think it’s well suited for social distancing,” Keller said. “Some folks will travel long distances to deer camp and meet with other friends and family there. I heard a couple people wondering if that was maybe not a good idea this year. We did some messaging to encourage people to social distance.”

Manager Jeremy Hosek mentioned that meat sales increased after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

“With the places being shut down, it actually made everybody scared to lose meat, so they came and bought a lot more,” Hosek said. “People were at home, they were eating more, they were buying more for the freezer so they didn’t have to leave home.”

The warm temps on opening weekend made it a little easier for the business to manage the influx of wild deer, since harvest numbers were lower on average. The risk of meat spoilage spurred hunters to do much of their own butchering during that weekend.

Flicker Meats is taking care to be as safe and sanitary as possible in its interactions with customers, offering curbside pickup for its orders.

Local butcher shops Some small butcher shops found themselves coping with the overflow from the closures of pork- and beefproducing facilities due to outbreaks of COVID-19 earlier this year. While this changed the way some Minnesota businesses were able to accept wild game, Flicker Meats in White Bear Lake did not notice a large difference.

Keeping CWD in check The spread of chronic wasting disease among whitetailed deer is a top-priority problem for the DNR, which operates statewide check stations to monitor the spread of this debilitating virus.

In an ordinary year, these check stations are mandatory in CWD-affected areas, but COVID-19 necessitated

voluntary drop-offs for the health and safety of hunters and DNR staff.

“The sampling stations can get quite crowded during opening weekend,” Keller said. This year, stations are unstaffed. Hunters in CWD management zones, control zones or surveillance areas are urged to drop off the head of deer 1 year of age or older at these stations.

Hunters who have heads from deer harvested on opening weekend can still drop those heads off at sampling stations.

Sampling numbers were low after opening weekend, but Keller said the numbers began to pick up during the latter half of the firearm season.

“They’re still not as high as we would’ve liked,” she said.

Hunters can prepare for sample drop-off by watching a CWD sampling demonstration video and consulting other resources online at dnr.state.mn.us/ cwd.

“Every test result, whether CWD is detected or not, is important because it shows us where the disease is,” Keller said. “We use this information to help us determine where we should target our management, keeping our efforts focused

where the disease is most prevalent. It’s important for hunters to remember that even deer that look healthy can be positive for the disease.”

The DNR website also includes options for sampling deer that allow hunters to keep the antlers or have the deer mounted.

The self-service sampling site closest to the Northeast Metro is the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area Headquarters in Columbus.

Self-service sampling is also available at Afton State Park.

Several taxidermy businesses in the area, including White Bear Taxidermy, can arrange sampling by appointment if you call ahead. Visit the DNR website to see an interactive map of resources in the area where you hunt.

• Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched out to the 1000 block of Gramsie Road Nov. 15 to recover an abandoned stroller, a baby carrier, an empty bag and a baby bathtub. No one in the area claimed the items. • A North St. Paul youth, 17, was arrested at 1:24 a.m. Nov. 16 on Hodgson Road and Snail Lake Road for DWI. A juvenile petition was sent fi rst to the county attorney and then to the city attorney.

After clearing the NCIC database, the bikes were placed into property. • A Blaine man, 22, was cited Nov. 20 for stealing a wallet from a purse belonging to a Shoreview woman while it was in the break room at a place of employment in the 5900 block of Rice Creek Parkway. After the subject was captured on video surveillance, he was identified.

His thefts also included a carton of cigarettes from a storage room.

• A Stacy man, 67, reported the front license plate stolen from his automobile Nov. 16 while he was inside a bank in the 1000 block of Red Fox Road. The license plate number was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database.

• A resident in the 500 block of Tanglewood Drive on Nov. 21 reported mail theft after she received a bundle of mail from the USPS that included notice that mail was possibly stolen and recovered from elsewhere. The notice advised the complainant to fi le a police report.

• Employees at the Best Western Plus in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road reported criminal damage to one of their rooms by a guest overnight Nov. 17-18.

• A vehicle in an underground garage in the 1000 block of Gramsie Road was reported broken into overnight Nov. 21-22, and two empty purses stolen.

• A wallet containing a driver’s license, credit cards and cash was reported found Nov. 19 in a parking lot in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. The items were inventoried according to department policy.

• A White Bear Lake man, 27, was arrested Nov. 23 in the 3800 block of Lexington Avenue N. for motor vehicle theft after squads were dispatched to assist the White Bear Lake Police Department in recovering a stolen vehicle. The subject was then turned over to WBLPD.

• Deputies were dispatched out to the 4200 block of Snail Lake Blvd.

‘ZERO KIDS WAITING’: MN Adopt finds loving, lifelong homes for children utilizing telehealth services for therapy and counseling more often than they did with in-person services prior to the pandemic, Van Brunt said. “You have disruption with what school looks like these days and what work looks like and what families’ work-life balance, so a lot of them are looking for extra support,� she said. “One theme that we have seen is more families accessing therapeutic support because they can do it through video in their own home.

They’re not running here and there and everywhere for these kinds of services.�

Raising children comes with challenges no matter how those children came to be a part of the family, but Van Brunt says the highs outweigh the lows—especially with support along the way. “We try to help people prepare for all the joys and challenges of children and how they come to them and the unique aspects about them,� she said. “Specialized support and being surrounded by other families who are having that same lived experience is really, really helpful.�

Shoreview resident Deirdre McCarrell Otis can attest to the joys brought by adoption in her own life. She and her husband, Sheff, have nine children, five biological and four adopted, between the ages of 4 and 20. Deirdre

said that adopting children has long been a priority for her. “I think that came from being an only child, and I was raised kind of all over the world. I traveled a lot and was exposed to different things,� she said. “I think part of it was just really wanting to create community and feeling a drive, almost, like this young, fresh energy and proving that you can create community without biology. It was a really strong value that I had.�

That value, Deirdre said, has primarily been informed by her faith. “We’re Catholic, and that definitely is part of who we are as a family,� she said. “But it also was a sense that it is possible to create a community without blood ties, and we built our family on that concept.�

When Deirdre and Sheff fi rst sought to adopt, they did so internationally. “We were newlyweds and we traveled to Russia. Our son had severe special needs, to the extent where we were told in the orphanage, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? You’re so young.’ We were almost dissuaded from the experience,� she remembered. “But we really said, ‘We’re going to dedicate this energy we have to a child and to diving into this world.�

Though those fi rst few months and years were not easy, Deidre said, they still made for an

invaluable experience. “Looking back now, 20 years later, I think it really created a desire to learn about children’s needs, trauma (and) what it means to be a parent to someone who needs you to constantly be learning,� she said.

Deirdre and Sheff have since opened their home to more children, both through adoption and the foster care system. “We started with international adoption, and through that process our eyes were opened to how much it takes to be an adoptive parent. It’s something where you really need to educate yourself, and we realized how much we had to learn,� Deirdre said.

That realization brought them to seek out education and support from local organizations like MN Adopt which, in turn, made them increasingly aware of the local need for adoptive and foster care families. “We hadn’t known about that before,�

Deirdre said. “At that point, we were having biological children and raising children who were adopted internationally, and then we became foster parents in 2014 through Ramsey County.�

opened their home to more than 20 children in Ramsey County’s foster care system and have continued to do so since the COVID-19 pandemic struck. “To us, the best language (to describe foster care), is bridge or support a child going to a family who’s really hoping to adopt, because in foster care, when (children) come to your door, you don’t know what’s going to happen.

Our goal through foster care is really to be a safe landing spot,� Deirdre

said. “We really went into it wanting to serve, wanting to be safe and help kids heal and help families heal.�

This Old Horse takes over Mel-O-Dee Stables

This Old Horse Founded in 2012 by Turner, This Old Horse is a volunteer-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide support and sanctuary to retired, rescued and recovering horses while they continue to serve as ambassadors to the positive effect of "horse power" in the lives of people.

The mission of the retirement refuge is to create a sanctuary for aged or unwanted horses who have worked hard for a living.

This Old Horse’s lease began Dec. 1.

The organization plans ultimately to purchase the property. The Hugo site, called Phoenix Farms, is the organization’s 11th barn. Turner explained that This Old Horse has been interested in the property for quite some time and had actually tried to purchase it back in 2016, but Meline did not want to sell.

Turner said the property was a natural fit for another location because This Old Horse already operates a few of its programs in the St. Croix Valley area, and many volunteers have expressed interest in volunteering closer to home rather than driving to the south metro. “It's already kind of a little jewel in Hugo that people love, and they want to see it there. People have a real love for (horses) there,� she said. “It feels like such a good fit for us to have that sense of being welcomed and that our farm will be welcoming.�

The main program at Phoenix Farms will be Racehorse Reimagined, which is a new collaboration with the Minnesota racehorse industry. “Retiring horses that have served are discarded and that makes them vulnerable. It doesn't matter what discipline, it's not just racehorses, it's

show horses, therapy horses ‌ Horses that have served are vulnerable at the point when they probably needed the most support and the most reverence, frankly, for the life of service. They are not like cars; you can't just park them, you still have to feed them and take care of them,� Turner explained.

This Old Horse has seven programs, some of which will also operate at the new location. “One of the things that we think we can offer is that people can experience horses in a certain way. Most of our horses are unridable because of the fact that they are older or (have) special needs. But there's so many ways that we find that we can engage with a horse and love a horse from the ground,� Turner said. “So, most of our programs are having the horse and the humans interact in ways that the humans can learn and the horses can be the teacher.�

Johanne Gentlebread, of Minneapolis, has been involved with the organization for a little over a year. “I was a social worker for 14 years and I decided that I wanted to fi nd my soul again after a soul-sucking job,� she explained. She started looking for volunteer opportunities involving animals and stumbled across This Old Horse.

Gentlebread has helped with barn chores as well as This Little Horse and a new pilot program called This Teaching Horse. This Little Horse is where miniature horses are used therapeutically to visit health care facilities, schools and libraries. This Teaching Horse is all about equine-facilitated learning for grades K-5.

Gentlebread now not only owns eight horses herself, but she is the barn manager for Phoenix Farms.

The entire operation, excepting barn managers and stable hands, is completely volunteer-based. Volunteers are primarily needed to help with barn chores, but also needed for things like adoptions and fundraising. “If someone has an interest in helping, we can find something for them to do,� Turner explained. Since 2012, the organization has had 3,000 volunteers. It is almost exclusively funded by private donations, but does receive some grants. “We love that for decades this has been open to the community up there as a place to come and love horses. That's really an important thing for us, and the fact that we can take that on and continue it,� Turner said.

Mel-O-Dee Stables is now home to This Old Horse.

Mel-O-Dee Stables, located at 13151 Elmcrest Ave. N. in Hugo, has operated as a full-service equine facility since 1971. The 40-acre farm has indoor/outdoor boarding options as well as indoor and outdoor riding arenas.

The past 13 months has seen a number of changes at the facility.

Last December, Reins of Love founder Cynthia Marx moved her operation from Isanti to Mel-O-Dee Stables. Reins of Love provides refuge and rehabilitation for abused equine, as well as riding lessons and therapy services.

In March, Mel-O-Dee Stables owner Donna Meline passed away at the age of 90. The property was given to Jeff Carpenter, a Forest Lake Building contractor who had worked for Meline and her husband Howard as a youth and, as co-manager, had helped her keep the stables afloat during the recent recession.

After Melineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, Carpenter listed the property for sale. Marx and fellow supporters of Reins of Love had hoped to raise enough money through crowdfunding to purchase the property but were unsuccessful; the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lease ended Nov. 30. Reins of Love will continue its mission in Isanti.

Carpenter explained, â&#x20AC;&#x153;My intent was and is to continue on the Melinesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wish for the property to remain an equine facility. I had several interested buyers and met with them all.â&#x20AC;?

He added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the end, I felt This Old Horse was a quality nonprofit organization and the best fit for the Mel-O-Dee Stables property. There is no doubt in my mind Nancy (Turner) and her staff will be excellent curators of the property. Their passion for horses and people is genuine, and I am proud to be a part of the change.â&#x20AC;?

Making safety of his staff and guests a top priority, Bill has recently invested heavily in modern, and proven, LED-UV Blue Light technology in both his air and pool filtration systems. “We’re working really hard to keep team members and guests safe”, says Bill.

Foussard purchased the Country Inn by Carlson in 2000 and soon after switched affiliation to Best Western. Rudy’s opened in 2003, with those aforementioned values being a top priority for him. The Event Space was overhauled in 2002, making the space much more attractive, functional and welcoming. Early on Bill saw the need for more outdoor dining in the area and Rudy’s rooftop opened in 2010. It has been a popular outdoor gathering spot for Twin Cities’ diners from day one. GM Paula Colucci and Executive Chef/GM Brian Schaeffer are proud of the expansive menu – on the rooftop as well in the main restaurant. “Our

kitchen is 95% scratch food, and we offer decent portions at reasonable prices” says Brian with pride. And of course, what visit is complete without at least one “Rudytini”!

Bill lives by his value of “asset to the community” every day of the year. Senior Picnic, Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels, Dinner with Santa for area Seniors are just some of the events Bill and his team generously contribute to throughout the year. “Customers are a Blessing”, says Bill.

The restaurant has been seeing an uptick in business lately with the ReGrow WBL Dining efforts. Like many, they are also upgrading their online Take-Out ordering capabilities and hope to have their new platform ready to go this fall.

Elizabeth Lawin immediately fell in love with the 19th century building on Washington Avenue. She loved the look and history of the brick building. She had a vision: she wanted to recreate the original look and old-time White Bear community feel. Her vision for a modern, yet traditional feeling; comfortable, yet beautiful space was a labor of love she feels she has accomplished.

“We wanted an atmosphere where guests want to come here on special occasions yet feel casual and comfortable, a place that feels welcoming and special”, says Lawin. Mission accomplished, as many of their patrons frequent the restaurant several times a week and give the food and atmosphere high marks. General manager Dan Brown makes sure all guests feel special.

The food and drink menus are created with that feel in mind as well. Elizabeth describes the food as “Midwestern Modern”. Chef Peter Christenson has created Traditional Minnesota style dishes that Midwesterners like, elevated with quality ingredients and unique preparations. The team is proud of their commitment to partnering with local farmers and growers whenever possible.

with Wild Rice and Mushrooms. Another signature dish is Korean Sticky Ribs. Bar Manager Clay LeMere developed a Craft Cocktail and Beer program that focuses heavily on local and regional breweries and suppliers. Cocktails are made from scratch and the menu changes with the seasons.

Brickhouse pivoted to Social Media and Online programs early in the COVID crisis and have developed a successful Take Out program via their web site: www. brickhousemn.com. Their daily Social Media specials have been a hit, especially their “Meatless Mondays”! Seeing the enormous appetite for outdoor dining Elizabeth has already started plans to expand their beautiful and homey rooftop deck. The new space will be ready next spring. The restaurant is open seven days a week.
