“It’s going to be a wonderful holiday gathering place for kids in our community,” said Mayor Sandy Martin. “I can’t wait to show it off.”

The new section, called Bamboo Bay, includes a play structure and 18-inch pool with a zero-depth entry for young swimmers. In the new area there are multiple sprayers, buckets, geysers, a tunnel slide and twin racing slides. There is spectator seating available for parents.

The expansion was made in the former outdoor pool area. The current toddler area in the waterpark was

A philanthropic effort started by a group of Shoreview women about six years ago has gone national.

The Power of 100 – Twin Cities Women Who Care began as a grass-

roots effort in 2012 by a group of 10 Mounds View Public Schools moms, most of whom lived in the Shoreview area, according to Press archives.

Co-founder Diane Kuehn said the women were school volunteers. One day, friend Pam Maccani voiced her idea for a giving group.

Judy Zewers, president of the Shoreview/ Arden Hills Lions Club, explained that it was “an in-house service night where we are doing a couple of different service projects to help out the community.”

The fi rst project the club worked on was for

Stepping Stone Emergency Housing in Blaine, a nonprofit organization that serves as a homeless shelter for youth and adults in Anoka County.

Volunteers helped gather and pack personal hygiene materials to make kits for those in need.

“We asked some hotels in the area to sponsor, and they donated some of their items and we hope to have quite a few items to help out (this holiday season),” Martha Johnson, club vice president, noted. Santa visits indoor farmers market The Shoreview Indoor Farmers Market will be

Use de-icing salt sparingly to protect Minnesota waters Minnesotans scatter an estimated 365,000 tons of salt in the metro area each year, but it only takes a teaspoon of salt to permanently pollute five gallons of water. There’s no feasible way to remove chloride once it gets into the water, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is finding increasing amounts of chloride in waters around the state. Salty water harms freshwater fish and other aquatic wildlife. Though no environmentally safe, effective and inexpensive alternatives to salt are yet available, smart salting strategies can help reduce chloride pollution in state waters. Salt will effectively remove snow and ice if it’s scattered so that the salt grains are about 3 inches apart A coffee mug full of salt (about 12 ounces) is all you need for a 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares (roughly 1,000 square feet). Beware of carbon monoxide As temperatures fall in Minnesota, the number of people who become seriously ill from carbon monoxide poisoning goes up, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

Emergency room visits and hospitalizations from carbon monoxide poisoning are highest between November and February, when the use of fuel-burning heat sources increases people’s risk, according to information from the Minnesota Public Health Tracking Program at MDH. Follow these safety tips. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Have your furnace or wood-burning stove inspected annually.

Never run a gasoline or propane heater or a grill (gas or charcoal) inside your home or in garage.

Generators should be run at a safe distance (at least 20 feet) from the home. Never run a car in an enclosed space.

At high levels, carbon monoxide can cause death within minutes. Symptoms of overexposure include headache, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and confusion. If you suspect poisoning, or your detector sounds an alarm, head outside immediately for fresh air and call 911.

Shoreview receives high marks in community survey Shoreview residents ranked the overall quality of life in the city highly again this year, according to Peter Leatherman of the Morris-Leatherman Company (MLC).

The 2018 community survey showed that 97 percent of residents rated the quality of life in Shoreview as either excellent or good. Sixty percent rated the quality of life as excellent, which places Shoreview among the top two cities in the metro area that MLC has surveyed. Shoreview’s quality-of-life ratings have been consistently very high, ranking as one of the highest quality-of-life cities in the metropolitan area since MLC began surveying Shoreview residents in the late 1980s.

Ninety-three percent of residents surveyed think Shoreview is headed in the right direction.

According to Leatherman, only three other cities have a rating over 90 percent on this question. Further, 91 percent of residents surveyed either strongly approved or somewhat approved of the job the City Council is doing. Finally, 76 percent of residents feel empowered and believe they can impact how things are run in the city, a result 16 percent higher than the average result in the Twin Cities.

Mayor Sandy Martin said, “We are very pleased that residents continue to recognize and appreciate the exceptional quality of life we are fortunate to have in Shoreview and that they believe the city is headed in the right direction.”

St. Lucia’s Day for all

S

t. Lucia’s Day, celebrated on Dec. 13, brings me fond memories of dressing up in a white gown with a candle-wreath on my head and carrying a tray of sweet treats to distribute.

The day is often celebrated in Europe and by Scandinavian Americans. One story of the history behind the celebration is that St. Lucia, during oppression by a Roman emperor, helped Christians who were hiding due to religious discrimination.

To deliver supplies to them inside the catacombs she wore on her head a wreath with candles on it in order to carry more food. According to history, she was martyred in 310 AD for her Story beliefs.

St. Lucia’s Day coincided with Chaser the winter solstice according to Sara Marie Moore the Julian calendar, the shortest day of the year, and is looked at as a festival of light bringing in the Christmas season.

When many Scandinavians became Christians, St. Lucia’s story had great meaning due to the celebration of light in a country quite dark in the wintertime. Scandinavian countries first observed St. Lucia’s Day in the middle ages. The name Lucia is based on the Latin word lux, that means light in English.

Although St. Lucia was not Swedish, the country is highly connected to the celebration because of the tradition, sprung from the 18th century, of the eldest daughter dressed in a white robe with a candle-wreath on her head singing Lucia lyrics and bringing Lucia buns and coffee to her father and mother. She wore white to symbolize baptism and a red sash to honor St. Lucia’s martyrdom.

Today in Sweden, regional Lucias are appointed to sing and pass out cookies in public places.

This tradition traces its roots back to Stockholm’s 1927 official Lucia, who was chosen by a newspaper. St. Lucia is also celebrated in other Scandinavian countries and in Italy, where St. Lucia was really from.

In Minnesota, St. Lucia is celebrated in places and churches with a Scandinavian-Christian history. Scandia and the Gammelgarden Museum hosted a Lucia celebration Dec. 9. There is a Swedish prayer service in an 1856 immigrant church and a Scandinavian breakfast with a Lucia processional choir.

Though I am not Swedish, but Norwegian, as a child I was able to be a Lucia complete with candle-wreath for a Swedish Smorgasbord in Minneapolis. (Don’t worry, the flames today are electronic, operated by heavy batteries.)

I also gave out treats to my relatives at their home. If you’re Scandinavian or Italian, and even if you’re not, letting your daughter be a Lucia around the holidays is a great way for her to learn the honor of serving. It’s not just a holiday for Swedes. It’s a holiday for anyone who wants to celebrate the light and hope of Christmas.

Silpakorn University in Bangkok Thailand, founded by an Italian, has a Lucia song as its anthem. A Lucia song was first written in the Neapolitan language, expressing a reminder of the peace St. Lucia’s life can inspire among those who travel the seas. Here is an English take: “Now ‘neath the silver moon Ocean is glowing, O’er the calm billows, soft winds are blowing.

Here balmy breezes blow, pure joys invite us, And as we gently row, all things delight us.

Hark, how the sailor’s cry joyously echoes nigh: Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia!

t is almost every month someone approaches me to talk about a piece they read in the paper only to realize what they thought was a news article was actually an advertisement.

As a general rule, news contains factual information reported by journalists. If they are responsible, well-trained journalists, they would have done research, verified facts, revealed the sources of their information and identified statements of opinion from those sources. With some legal or policy exceptions, advertisements can say pretty much whatever they want to and do not undergo independent factchecking. Sometimes, in hopes of increasing credibility, ads are deliberately disguised to look like

Six ways to beat sickness and boost your immune system

T

is the season of hacking coughs and dripping noses.

We’ve all been there. Avoiding a co-worker whose cough is loud, junky and so bad you worry just the sound will infect you! Or, how about that sweet child whose nose is like a faucet? Don’t forget the well-meaning (obviously sick) churchgoer who is coming to shake your hand!

Infectious invaders are increasing, spreading and threatening to turn your well-intentioned day into a mess.

There are ways to boost your immune system so it is strong enough to battle the bad coughs and crusty noses of your friends and family.

Immune system definition Your immune system is your body’s defense against infection and illness.

It recognizes when cells enter your body that do not belong there, such as bacteria and viruses, and will fight against them to keep you from getting sick. While your immune system can be seemingly invincible, there are certain aspects of life that can make it harder to do its job.

How do you boost your immune system? There are several ways that you are able to keep your defenses in tiptop shape. Following a healthy lifestyle will certainly be a good start. Making sure you have a healthy, well-balanced

diet, and getting enough exercise and sleep and managing stress, are all ways to support your immune system and keep it running smoothly yearround.

1. Diet — Many foods have different vitamins and minerals in them that are beneficial to your body’s defense system. Eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, and meat will help maintain proper function.

3. Manage stress — Stress overload causes your body to produce more of the hormone cortisol. In short spurts, such as during intense exercise, corti-

sol can produce an anti-inflammatory response, but chronic stress can cause your body to get used to the cortisol, making it prone to inflammation.

Managing your stress with things like meditation or yoga can help reduce your cortisol levels, thus improving your immune system.

4. Get enough sleep (turn off your phone) — Lack of sleep no doubt impacts your immune system. Sleep helps your body recover, as well, so if you aren’t getting enough of it, your body will suffer. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines. Certain cytokines are used to fight infection and inflammation, but lack of sleep can decrease the production of these proteins, making it harder to fight off illness. Sleep is also important to your circadian rhythm, which is a major factor in your immune health.

So, silence your phone, pull the curtains and create an environment that fosters sleep.

5. Stay hydrated and avoid excessive alcohol — Water is essential for our body to function properly. The recommended amount of water is eight glasses per day. Water helps maintain moisture, especially in the mucous membranes and nasal passages, where viruses often enter our bodies. Water helps oxygenate the blood in our

bodies, which pumps up our cells and helps them function properly. This helps our muscles and organs work efficiently. Water also helps flush out toxins, through the kidneys.

Along with more water intake, alcohol consumption should be lessened.

Alcohol can disrupt the circadian rhythm, causing a loss of sleep, which can impact our overall health. It can also suppress the activity of white blood cells whose key function is to do battle on the front lines with germs and other illness-causing factors.

6. Take preventative steps — While you should definitely incorporate all of the above aspects into consideration when trying to support your immune system, there are definitely smaller things you can do to prevent unwanted illnesses or infections. Make sure your house is clean and sanitized. Wiping down surfaces with disinfectant wipes can inhibit bacteria and viruses from getting on countertops where you place food or utensils that end up in your mouth. Also, be sure to wash your hands frequently during cold and flu season, as well as year-round. During the flu season, a flu shot is definitely recommended.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Shoreview is ‘civic strong’ Congrats, fellow Shoreview residents! In case you haven’t seen the results provided by Ramsey County, our city’s turnout numbers were strong for the 2018 midterm elections.

That’s right: according to data compiled by the Secretary of State, 85 percent of registered voters picked candidates across the city’s six precincts. While Minnesota again claimed the “nationwide turnout title” among states at 64 percent, Shoreview exceeded that by a full 20 percentage points — arguably placing it in its own stratum of democratic engagement this non-presidential year.

2018 was also the fi rst election in which early voting options were abundant for Shoreview residents. Between the county mail-in, Shoreview City Hall and Ramsey County Library-Shoreview absentee options afforded voters before Election Day, practically anyone wanting to vote could. Early voting’s overall impact on fi nal turnout may be inconclusive, but having served as an election judge in Shoreview the week prior to Nov. 6, I can safely report substantial “Election Ethos” was present in the library-provided polling station the entire time.

I’d also like to call attention to another wonderful public mechanism for strengthening Shoreview — participation in the American Community Survey (ACS) performed by the U.S. Census Bureau. Most are familiar with the decennial census to be conducted in 2020, but did you know the ongoing ACS is an equally critical tool for determining how public funding allotments for community development, trans-

portation systems, veteran programs and other programs are calculated?

The survey replaced the long-form, decennial questionnaire used many years ago, the updated results of which are continually available at the Census Bureau website and queryable by zip code. There you can learn interesting statistical tidbits about Shoreview, including the average household size, education level of its residents and number of veterans living in our midst, to name a few. Only a small number of household units are selected for participation, so if yours should ever be one of them, please consider moving the request up your personal priority list for completion.

RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

North Oaks • Deputies responded at 8 a.m. the morning of Nov. 14 to a report of a person sleeping in a truck in the middle of Willow Road. The truck was gone on their arrival but found later. The driver, a 21-yearold female out of Morton, Minnesota, was charged with receiving stolen property (the car), driving after license suspension and on an active warrant for her arrest. She was booked into jail.

• An animal control officer investigated a report of a raccoon moving slowly Nov. 30 in the fi rst block of Swallow Lane. The animal was transported to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Shoreview • A Sylvia Lane resident called 911 the afternoon of Nov. 13 because an opossum was blocking her front door. A trash bag was next to the front door and the opossum wasn’t about to give it up. A deputy relocated the critter to the woods behind the house.

• A prowler busted the side window of a 44-yearold woman’s truck the morning of Nov. 13 at the dog park in the 5900 block of Lexington Avenue, making off with her purse which contained credit cards and a wallet containing $40.

• A 17-year-old boy, stopped for driving with expired tabs Nov. 16 on Lexington Avenue, was also cited for driving after license revocation and no proof of insurance.

• A Ham Lake couple was celebrating at a family gathering Nov. 17 in St. Paul when things went awry. The boyfriend, who said his girlfriend was being “too friendly” with another man, physically assaulted the woman, leaving her with cuts and

• A white tailgate for a Chevy pickup was stolen overnight Nov. 26 in the 3500 block of Owasso Street. No suspects.

• A resident transported an injured owl from her yard in the 44000 block of Snail Lake Boulevard the morning of Nov. 27 to the University of Minnesota Raptor Center.

• A man reported on Nov. 27 that on Oct. 17 (yes, weeks earlier — this is not a typo) he awoke to realize that his keys and his 2008 blue Dodge Caravan were missing. No suspects.

• A cab driver fi led a report of a theft of a fare Nov. 29 in the 4100 block of Lexington Avenue when two passengers attempted to pay $42.50 for the ride with a debit card. The card was declined, and the couple went into an apartment building to get the cash. They never returned.

• Evicted occupants of an apartment in the 200 block of Mayfair Road left their cat behind Nov. 20. The renter, a 66-year-old Vadnais Heights man, is not responding to phone calls. The cat awaits its fate at the St. Paul Animal Control Center.

• Deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run incident the afternoon of Dec. 1 in the 3500 block of Owasso Street. A mom told deputies that her exhusband had run over her foot following a child custody exchange, then left the scene. The woman was not injured. The ex-husband reported that he was unaware he had run over the foot and had left the scene to “de-escalate” a verbal argument.

Deputies advised both parties on better ways to manage a child custody exchange.

• An investigation of a report of an adult male and an adult female arguing in the middle of Rice Street the morning of Nov. 22 led to the woman telling deputies she had been using meth. The 29-year-old was transported to a local hospital.

Minnesota lodging industry training staff to recognize sex trafficking The Minnesota Lodging Association and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recently released sex trafficking prevention and response training for the Minnesota Lodging Industry.

The training is a requirement of a mandate passed during the 2018 Minnesota legislative session which states that employees of hotels and motels in Minnesota must be trained to recognize sex trafficking. Minnesota joins several other states in implementing this type of requirement.

Sex trafficking happens across Minnesota. A recent report by the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation found that of the victims receiving Safe Harbor sex trafficking prevention and recovery services in the state, 36 percent of victims were in the Twin Cities metro area and 64 percent were in greater Minnesota. Given the hidden nature of sex trafficking, gathering accurate data on prevalence can be difficult.

According to data from the National Human Trafficking Resource Center and Polaris BeFree Texting Helpline, nearly 1,500 cases of sex trafficking in hotels and motels involving more than 1,800 victims have been reported in the U.S. since 2007.

This makes the training of staff in recognizing and reporting sex trafficking an important piece of prevention.

“Sex trafficking is a growing and complex public health concern in Minnesota,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “There is a need for action at all levels through policy,

programs and preventive efforts. Partnerships between the public and private sectors like this one with Minnesota hotels and motels are welcome because they make a critical difference in addressing the issue.”

Current hotel and motel owners, managers and employees were required to complete the new training by Nov. 28; new employees must be trained within 90 days of hire. Operators are also required to post and maintain an approved poster on sex trafficking in a location visible to all staff, conduct annual training and support an ongoing awareness campaign for employees. These requirements are tied to hotel and motel licensing.

“Our lodging association members supported this legislation because they recognize the important role they play in eliminating sex trafficking in our state and want to help,” said Liz Rammer, president and CEO of Hospitality Minnesota and executive vice president of the Minnesota Lodging Association. “Training materials were carefully and thoughtfully developed with hotel and motel staff in mind to ensure that they are relevant and actionable.”

Training materials include a manager and owner training toolkit, trainee guide, poster set for display and guided training presentation.

The MDH Safe Harbor Program is the result of the Safe Harbor Law passed in 2011. It raises awareness, understanding and identification of the commercial sexual exploitation of youth. The program also coordinates the state response to sex trafficking with cross-sector partners.

The Minnesota Lodging Association has provided business support services to hotels, motels, inns and bed-and-breakfasts since 1931. Membership includes major hotel brands as well as independent properties throughout the state. Members receive access to industry data, advocacy, education, marketing and networking. The association is a state partner of the American Hotel and Lodging Association.

LIONS CLUB: Host two ‘in-house’ service projects to make big impact FROM PAGE 1

For the second project, the Lions Club partnered with the American Red Cross on a program called “Holiday Cards for Heroes.” The volunteers that attended that night wrote cards for active and retired service members wishing them happy holidays. Once the cards are donated to the Red Cross, they are then sent to Veterans Administrations, overseas and to local families.

Lion Emma Frazee said that cards generated in Minnesota are shared with other states if they come up short. “It is kind of funny,” she added, “because Minnesota is so generous that we wind up having more than we need.”

Zewers explained, “A lot of the times we will do our service projects out in the community. We have done some things with the community center, the Army, the YMCA and Northeast Minneapolis Youth and Family Service Center. We thought it would be fun to do something in-house where we can all just have some fun and do something together.”

group’s name shifted from referring to 100 women to the power of giving $100. The group was modeled after similar organizations in other states, said Lisa Mattson, one of the co-founders.

In the ensuing years, the group grew into three chapters in the Twin Cities and more than 200 members, Mattson noted. The organization has raised nearly $500,000 for 25 charities to date.

The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation also joined the group in 2014 with a matching gift program.

Schulze is the founder of Best Buy. This year, the partnership with the foundation was rolled out nationwide.

“Schulze identified the Power of 100 Women Who Care structure as a meaningful way to partner with local philanthropists and give back to the many communities that have helped Best Buy,” Mattson said.

The matching funds, up to $5,000

per quarter, will go directly to the nonprofit organizations chosen by eligible Power of 100 chapters. Each meets for one hour four times a year to vote on where to donate. Members then each write a check directly to the chosen charity.

Twenty-three official chapters are currently located in Minnesota, California, Colorado and Florida. The program is expected to soon have 200 chapters nationwide.

The local chapter meets at the Shoreview Hilton Garden Inn. Its most recent donation was about $21,000 to courageous heARTS, a nonprofit youth art studio. Previous charities include Tamarisk, Ruth’s House of Hope, Options for Women East, Jack’s Basket, Mobile Loaves Twin Cities, Breast Milk for Babies, Ampersand Families, Hope 4 Youth, Second Stork, Canvas Health TXT4LIFE, Accessible Space and Cars for Neighbors.

crowded, said Martin when renovation and expansion plans for the Community Center were announced last year. Shoreview has seen a population shift from seniors to young families.

The city wants to keep it fresh and exciting and cater to those new young families, Martin noted, who was on the council when the Community Center was built in 1990.

The waterpark also has a new slip-resistant floor and expanded family locker rooms. The Wave Cafe was also remodeled.

The waterpark renovation and expansion was part of a $16 million expansion of the Community Center.

Work began last fall and included an expanded indoor playground, remodeled fitness center, new fitness and activity rooms, a new preschool room and more bathrooms.

“Bamboo Bay is the definitely the final and, in my opinion, the most exciting and significant element of the community expansion,” Martin noted. “It will bring a whole new level of healthy fun entertainment for kids in our community.”

More than 500,000 people visit the center each year. The Community Center has proved quite popular over its life for a variety of functions — rooms are rented out almost every night of the week, Martin said.

The goal was to raise funds for Mental Health Minnesota, a nonprofit organization that specializes in aiding those with mental health concerns. The organization offers support programs, guides to mental wellness and presentations about mental health

In the class, the instructor guides students through a semesterlong course involving a service-learning project of their choosing.

State aims to increase percent of children vaccinated against flu Slightly more Minnesota children received vaccinations for influenza in the 2017-18 flu season compared to the previous season, according to national data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, health officials remain concerned that too many children still remain unvaccinated for influenza each year. That leaves children vulnerable to serious illness and even death from influenza and its potential complications.

CDC released the National Immunization Survey (NIS) data this fall as part of its kick-off of the #FightFlu campaign, a partnership with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and others to protect more Americans from influenza this year. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has joined the fight.

According to CDC estimates from the NIS, approximately 62 percent of Minnesota children between the ages of 6 months and 17 years received vaccinations during the 2017-18 influenza season. That rate was similar to but up slightly from estimates for the previous two years, which were just over 60 percent. The overall national rate of coverage was 57.9 percent, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points from the previous season. The survey showed that vaccination coverage varied by state and age group.

“Protecting slightly more Minnesota children from influenza last year is good news, especially given the lack of a no-shot, nasal spray option, but we still have too many children left unprotected from this potentially serious disease,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “The flu vaccine protects those who receive it as well as those in the community who cannot be vaccinated due to medical conditions.”

About 38 percent of Minnesota children were not vaccinated against the flu last season.

Five children died from influenza or related complications during last year’s flu season, and more than 6,400 Minnesotans of all ages were hospitalized for influenza. CDC says 74 percent of the 172 pediatric deaths nationwide in 2017-18 involved unvaccinated children. Most of them did not have any underlying health conditions. Health officials noted that these numbers underscore how severe influenza can be and that vaccination is the best tool we have to fight influenza.

“Since children can’t make the decision to get vaccinated themselves, it’s up to parents and health care providers to make it happen,” MDH Infectious Disease Division Direc-

tor Kris Ehresmann said. “Parents should ask their health care provider about influenza vaccine and providers should check the vaccination status of patients at every visit and strongly recommend vaccination.”

MDH is partnering with pediatricians to get more children vaccinated against influenza this year.

“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends all children ages 6 months and older receive the flu vaccine each year, ideally by the end of October,” said Dr. Lori DeFrance, president of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MNAAP). “Parents should be aware that the flu can cause serious complications — even in healthy children.

The flu vaccine is the best way to protect them from outbreaks in schools, daycares and communities.”

The survey’s data for Minnesota show differences in coverage between age groups. The rate for children 6 months through 4 years (75 percent) is significantly higher than the rate for children 5 through 12 years (65 percent). Coverage falls even more for adolescents 13-17 years (50 percent).

That suggests influenza vaccination may be related to “convenience” or how often children of different ages visit their health care provider. It’s more difficult to get school-age chil-

dren in to see a provider during the school year.

Ehresmann noted that there are greater opportunities for influenza vaccination today so there are fewer excuses for not vaccinating children, especially school-age children and adolescents. “Many clinics will be offering walk-in hours for influenza vaccine over the next few months, so check with your home clinic,” Ehresmann said. “Also, most pharmacies and convenience clinics offer walk-in vaccinations for influenza. Some local public health agencies also offer the vaccine.”

It’s a good idea to call ahead and make sure that your clinic has vaccine formulations available if you have younger children, because they need specific types of vaccine.

Pharmacists can vaccinate children 6 years and older.

You can suffer memory loss after the surgery and have other issues. You are on a bypass machine; your heart isn’t pumping for four to six hours. People can’t relate to that. They don’t understand what happens to mind and body.”

After months of searching, Fusco was connected to the WomenHeart office in Washington, D.C. She learned about the Mayo symposium and decided to go through the interview process. She was accepted.

“It’s an honor to represent WomenHeart and be part of a mission to raise awareness about heart disease in women,” Fusco said. “As a survivor, I know the importance of having a strong support system and I want to be there for women in need. This is something I understand dearly.
