For anyone who is struggling with mental health issues, you are not alone. There is help out there.

Northeast Youth and Family Services (NYFS) is one of those places. The community-based, trauma-informed, mental health and human services nonprofit organization has been serving the communities of suburban Ramsey County for 45 years.

The nonprofit’s mission is creating a better tomorrow for youth, adults and families in our community.

The organization offers three programs—Community Advocate Program, Senior Chore Program and Youth Diversion.

“On the mental health side of things, we have two outpatient clinics—one in White Bear Lake and one in Shoreview. These are mental health services for all ages,” NYFS President and CEO Tara Jebens-Singh

said. “We have partnerships with three school districts— Roseville, Mounds View and White Bear Lake, and we have therapists embedded within 17 different school buildings.”

The Senior Chore Program enables older adults to age independently within the community. The Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation (VHEDC) celebrated local business and community leaders at the annual Rising Star and Business Leadership Awards event held June 2 at Jimmy’s Event Center.

Kevin Whelan is the recipient of the 2021 Business Leadership Award. Kevin is the president of Frandsen Bank & Trust, located in Vadnais Heights.

The Business Leadership Award is given annually to a business leader who works in the local community and demonstrates outstanding leadership, both at work and in the community. Leadership qualities include creativity, volunteerism, responsibility, problem-solving, respectfulness, cooperation and organizational skills. Leadership qualities are not limited to VHEDC activities and may include work for other organizations.

Beside his leadership at Frandsen Bank & Trust and other banks throughout his banking career, Whelan serves on the Merrick Inc. finance committee. He was on the VHEDC board of directors for 10 years and served as board president, and was chair of the Keith Warner Memorial Golf Tournament committee for several years. Whelan has also been a strong advocate of the North Metro Young Professionals in partnership with VHEDC, encouraging his team members to join and inspire their growth and leadership.

Local entrepreneur’s apparel firm finalist for award Michael E. Jordan, former White Bear Lake hockey goalie who founded a successful sports apparel company in his early 20’s, is one of 36 finalists for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the seven-state Heartland Region, presented by Ernst & Young.

Nominees are evaluated based on six criteria: entrepreneurial leadership, talent management, degree of difficulty, financial performance, societal impact and building a values-based company, and originality, innovation, and future plans. The winner will be announced in late July.

Jordan called it “an incredible honor” and “a testament to my team.”

His company, UNRL, based in St. Paul, was founded in his mother’s basement seven years ago with a mere $300

investment. UNRL now has 19 employees and is on track to reach eight figures in annual sales without any outside investment or business loans.

UNRL products are sold in various retailers throughout the country including Scheels, PGA Tour Superstore, and various NHL and NFL Pro Shops. One Michael E. of UNRL’s most notable apparel partnerships is with the social media power- Jordan house Barstool Sports.

WE’RE SEEING SIGNS of inflation with postage going up by 9% on Aug. 29 for periodicals like newspapers. First class stamps will go from 55 cents to 58 cents.

Food prices, as I’m sure you have noticed, are the highest in a decade. Gasoline prices are up over $1.00/gallon compared to a year ago. Some of that should settle, but we do have more cars back on the road this summer after the Covid-19 shutdown.

With more and more cars becoming electric, gasoline taxes will be reduced for state governments. People living in condos will have the individual expense or assessment as power is made available in their respective garages for charging purposes.

ON JULY 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation.

As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks, and backyard barbeques across the country.

Chances are the hot dogs and pork sausages on the grill originated in Iowa, home to farmers who raise millions of hogs every year.

The fireworks industry has had unprecedented growth over the past decade. For example, display fireworks revenue in 2020 was $93 million, down because of COVID-19, compared to 2019 at $375 million in revenue. Consumer fireworks revenue in 2020 was $1.9 billion compared to $1 billion in 2019.

In the U.S., Missouri is the state that spends the most on fireworks and Nebraska and Kansas take second and third.

Last year the U.S. imported about $279,996,624 worth of fireworks, with nearly all of it from China.

Total imports for Minnesota were $484,924, or only nine cents per capita.

JUNE 20 IS just around the corner and that is our Summer Solstice or the first day of summer.

The reality comes with it that it’s the longest day of the year and then the days begin to get shorter. This year the solstice occurs on Father’s Day. Treat the dads well and enjoy the Fourth, but be safe. We don’t want to lose any of our newspaper readers.

Budget work continues, but transparency needed

T

his highly unusual legislative session closed on May 17th, the day Minnesota’s Constitution sets for adjournment. Unfortunately, due to difficult circumstances this year— especially COVID-19 protocols shifting much of our business to remote and virtual hearings—we were unable to pass the state’s two year budget. While this is very disappointing, our work has not stopped.

For several weeks, some legislative work groups have met to address parts of the budget, but most negotiations are not transparent to Movers & the public. That’s wrong. I strongly Shakers believe that we should be holding Chuck Wiger public hearings and not waiting until top leaders issue updates, further delays and blame.

Work group conversations have happened behind closed doors, without the full input necessary from Minnesotans. These are incredibly important conversations.

People have the right, and legislators have the responsibility, to make these accessible and open.

I will continue to push for more transparency so people can make their voice heard in these debates

virtual meetings in the district, and more recently, am happy to see many of you at events as pandemic restrictions are removed.

If you have not yet, I encourage you to get vaccinated. We are winning the fight against COVID-19. We are seeing some of the lowest rates of infection since this pandemic began! We are much closer to a return to normal, and the best way to get there is to roll up your sleeves and get vaccinated.

I assume we will reach an overall agreement this month. My top priority has always been working on behalf of students, and that work continues. I am a part of the legislative working group that is designing the budget and policy provisions for the E-12 bill.

The good news is that an E-12 budget target of $525 million was announced by the Governor and House and Senate leaders on the last day of the session. That “numbers-only” budget provides guidance to our policy negotiations as we craft a comprehensive budget for the special session.

Given the new budget target, it’s likely there will be a robust investment in the basic funding formula, which was missing from the original Senate bill. We have reached agreement on several initiatives related to increasing more teachers of color. Work continues on mental health initiatives, special education and English language learner cross subsidies, nutrition, community education, full-service community schools and flexibility in defining instructional hours.

I will do all I can to get our work done and pass a final budget. Throughout this process, I have tried to provide timely updates about the status of budget negotiations and these conversations through my newsletter. I have held many

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Forgot ‘Carts’ Reading Bruce Strand’s piece on Wyatt Newpower joining the Red Wings in your June 9 edition, he mentioned “Three White Bear Lake athletes have played in the NHL: Brian Bonin, Justin Braun and the late Jeff Parker.”

Oops. He overlooked 10-year NHL vet Ryan Carter, who played over 400 games in the NHL, including two seasons for the hometown Minnesota Wild. Carter won a championship with the Anaheim Ducks and even brought the Stanley Cup home to White Bear Lake for all to see. Today local residents can still see White Bear Lake legend Ryan “Carts” Carter roaming Gem Lake golf course wearing flip-flops and carrying only an 8-iron.

Thankful for housing forum Having just attended the city of White Bear Lake’s housing forum meeting, I would like to say a big huge “thank you” to our city for organizing the informative and thoughtful presentation. White Bear Lake housing is in my blood, as I was born and raised in the oldest brick house in White Bear Lake, and followed up with a 32-year real estate career specializing in White Bear Lake buyers and sellers. Together with my husband, Doug Kraemer, we moved many houses that were going to be torn down and respected their historical value by renovating them. Many became duplexes and homes for renters. Our town is special and must be shared, while being smart about creating housing that keeps our town’s historical integrity.

I want other young adults who grew up here to have starter housing to return to after they leave town as young graduates and explore the world and realize White Bear Lake is where they want to raise their children. I want local housing for our wonderful seniors to live out their lives.

Housing is serious business.

We are all in this together, and I thank our great city administration, wonderful and competent fire department and a police department that loves and protects our citizens, and I can’t forget our

COMMUNITY BRIEFS public works department that works tirelessly to maintain our beautiful parks and downtown area and Memorial Beach. We even have our own newspaper!

Perhaps we all need to count our blessings and focus on the beauty we take for granted.

Acknowledge all faiths I applaud the formation of the White Bear Lake Welcoming and Inclusive Task Force. We all want our communities to make everyone feel valued and included.

I have lived in the area for 29 years. In that time I have read numerous commentaries and editorials by the White Bear Press' publishers. At least half refer to "Christian values" and often quote Biblical scripture. I realize the owners of the newspaper can make whatever comments they wish, but I would like an acknowledgement that our community includes people of all faiths, or perhaps none at all. We can and should strive to be kind, loving, gentle people without having to measure those qualities against how much of a "Christian" we might be.

White privilege is real Currently, groups made up of mostly white people are fighting in our local school districts to stop anything mentioning equity.

These groups believe even talking about race is somehow offensive to their values or freedom. As the saying goes: When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

There is plenty of racism in our towns. These groups are in denial about it, then they turn that denial into rejection. If you think it’s uncomfortable talking about racism in White Bear Lake and Vadnais Heights, imagine the discomfort in experiencing it.

If you think talking about racism creates more racism, you probably weren’t aware of the severity of the problem. Our country was founded on white supremacy, and it exists within each system. Just because we didn’t create the systems doesn’t mean we don’t benefit from them. That

statement alone probably makes white people feel uncomfortable, but it’s true and it’s time to get uncomfortable.

To say our country was built on equity is absurd. I’m a history teacher, so here’s your reminder that colonizers violently stole this nation from Indigenous people, then profited off their land. Black people were kidnapped and enslaved for hundreds of years until the 13th Amendment was adopted and, even then, it took on new forms in Jim Crow laws, Black Codes, voter suppression, redlining, hiring discrimination and more. Asian American Pacific Islander and Latino communities have faced centuries of this racism as well. The history you were taught isn’t the full story.

Don’t get defensive about racism, learn about it. Racism is the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic and political advantage of another.

That’s why “reverse racism” isn’t real. White people might face prejudices or struggles, but we haven’t been oppressed or marginalized because of our race.

Every white person, myself included, needs to remember that it isn’t enough to be “not racist.”

We must actively stand up against racism when we see and hear it. That’s part of what a Human Rights Commission would do and why VH4Change is pushing for one. We can’t jump ahead to unity without accountability.

Vaccination a better choice

There are many reasons why people are avoiding being vaccinated, but the glaring point is - if you are vaccinated you most likely will not become a statistic by dying from Covid-19. I believe being vaccinated is the better choice.

Applicants sought for Health and Public Safety Commission The city of Vadnais Heights is seeking residents to fi ll positions on the Health and Public Safety Commission. RAMSEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

Vadnais Heights A resident in the 600 block of County Road D reported a burglary May 30 in which more than $4,000 in cash and a checkbook were taken. The complainant suspects a family member.

A Lake Elmo man was cited May 30 at Walmart in the 800 block of County Road E for shoplifting.

The report was forwarded to the city attorney for consideration of charges. A St. Paul man, 31, was also cited that same day for shoplifting from Walmart. He also faces charges.

A Vadnais Heights man, 47, was arrested at 8:43 p.m. May 30 for misdemeanor assault and criminal damage to property in the 400 block of Walker Drive. The suspect damaged the neighbors' mailbox and slapped one of the neighbors.

An unknown person was reported May 31 for shoplifting at the Dollar Tree in the 900 block of County Road E after he was seen filling a canvas bag with approximately $25 in items and leaving the store without paying.

A Vadnais Heights man, 25, was arrested for DUI at a half hour past midnight June 2 in the 4000 block of Oak Crest Drive after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an automobile crash report. The subject has been charged with two counts of drunk driving.

Deputies recovered a stolen vehicle at 3:18 a.m.

June 2 on Arcade and Payne Avenues in St. Paul, following a 4-mile pursuit that started on I-694 and I-35E and lasted for three minutes. The driver and passenger fled on foot and were not located.

A Vadnais Heights woman, 45, was arrested on two Ramsey County warrants and one Washington County warrant at 9:43 a.m. June 2 at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of County Road D. A Vadnais Heights woman, 38, was arrested on a Ramsey County gross misdemeanor domestic abuse warrant at 1:52 p.m. June 2 in the 300 block of Jay Way. A St. Paul woman, 53, was cited June 2 at the

Vadnais Heights Walmart for shoplifting. Her case has been sent to the city attorney for consideration of charges. That same evening, Walmart also reported a male and female for each pushing a cart filled with more than $500 in merchandise out of the store without paying for the items.

Qwinstar Corporation in the 3500 block of Willow Lake Road reported a person for felony theft of an iPhone12 June 3 after surveillance video showed the suspect taking the phone from its packaging and pocketing it. The subject then left the empty box with others on the loading dock.

Walmart reported more shoplifters June 3. A Blaine man, 27, was cited and released. His report was forwarded to the city attorney for charges.

A St. Paul woman, 40, was cited that evening for shoplifting after she was seen leaving the store with a cart filled with merchandise. The merchandise was recovered in the parking lot.

A North St. Paul woman, 25, was cited for giving a false name to police and for misdemeanor theft after she was caught concealing items and removing them from the store. She has been "trespassed" for one year.

A St. Paul man, 38 was arrested June 4 in the 1100 block of County Road E for disorderly conduct after he became intoxicated and would not leave a restaurant. He fought with restaurant staff and passersby.

The Kwik Trip in the 3200 block of Highway 61 on June 5 reported the theft of two charity cash boxes from the counter. Surveillance video from 2:53 a.m. that morning showed the subject taking the boxes and leaving the scene.

White Bear Township A juvenile was arrested at 5:36 p.m. June 2 in the 3800 block of Lakewood Avenue for violating a harassment restraining order (HRO). The case has been sent to the city attorney for consideration.

A resident in the 3900 block of Lakewood Avenue reported losing $2,400 in a phone scam June 2 in which the caller claimed he had problems with his Amazon account, even though he didn't have an Amazon account. The victim was told he owed money and needed to pay with gift cards and grant access to his computer.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Dellwood A suspicious vehicle reported for being parked at the side of the road in the area of Dellwood and Dwinnell avenues at 11:43 p.m. May 20 turned out to belong to an individual holding a spot in line for an estate sale of a house the following morning.

A consensual vehicle search upturned only personal items.

Grant A water softener and a mop were reported stolen May 17 from the 9000 block of 103rd Street N. as a result of a burglary. The residence was unoccupied, as it was up for sale.

A resident in the 8000 block of Kimbro Avenue N. on May 19 reported credit card fraud.

Mahtomedi Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies at 1:08 a.m. May 16 conducted a search on a vehicle parked in Katherine Abbott Park on Lincolntown Avenue after hours and found drug paraphernalia.

A neighbor dispute was reported May 16 on Juniper Street as part of an ongoing dispute.

Deputies advised the complainant about how to file for a harassment restraining order and to contact them if matters escalated.

Two lighters were reported stolen May 17 from the Holiday gas station on Stillwater Road.

Three separate neighbors in the Dartmoor area called in to complain about loud music playing at 7:30 a.m. May 19.

Deputies responded to the scene and listened to “Somebody to Love” and “We Will Rock You” by Queen on what appeared to be full blast. When the second song was done, the music was turned down. After five minutes of listening only to the birdies singing, deputies contacted the resident, who said that a male visitor had turned the music on prior to leaving the scene. Deputies explained the ordinance violation and stressed the impact of three separate neighbors calling to complain about the same nuisance. The tenant promised to have no further incidents.

Pine Springs A westbound motorist was cited May 14 on Highway 36 for speeding 78 mph in a 55 mph zone by stationary deputies, who clocked him on radar at 698 feet. The driver said she thought the speed limit was 65 mph. Deputies cited six motorists for speeding that day at the

same location.

An eastbound motorist was cited May 15 on Highway 36 for speeding 79 mph in a 55 mph zone by stationary deputies, who clocked her on radar at 230 feet. Four other motorists were cited for speeding that day at the same location.

A Minnesota motorist was cited May 16 on westbound Highway 36 at the I-694 southbound ramp for speeding 85 mph in a 55 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol, who clocked him on radar at 904 feet. The driver received a special penalty for speeding 30 mph over the speed limit. A second motorist was also cited less than 15 minutes later at that location for speeding 20 miles over the speed limit.

The driver of a silver BMW was cited May 20 on Highway 36 and Hilton Trail N. for violating the Ted Foss Move Over law after he passed six squad cars on the shoulder that had emergency lights activated without moving to the left lane or slowing down.

Willernie Deputies issued a citation to a Stewart Road resident May 22 on behalf of the Willernie City Council for violation of a city ordinance requiring all garbage and recycling bins to be stored out of sight.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — City Council met in person for the first time in months at its June 8 meeting. Mayor Jo Emerson said it was good to be back together. The mayor also publicly thanked City Clerk Kara Coustry, "who kept us going during the pandemic. We couldn't have done this without her."

Emerson told Coustry she made it easy for the council to get its work done.

First on the agenda was a design status update by Wold Architects concerning the police squad garage and fire apparatus bay project.

Most of the focus has been on functional layout of the building to make sure concepts still work, said Wold's Joel Dunning. The schematic design process will take six weeks to wrap up, with the design development phase occurring July to September. Architects will bring the design package back to council in September for approval.

The project is expected to be completed December 2022.

In other business last week, the council: • Accepted the low bid in the amount of $97,200 from Hydro-Klean LLC for the 2021 sewer lining project.

Liners will be installed inside sanitary sewer mains that have been identified by public works as high risks for backups due to misaligned joints, root problems, pipe deterioration or inaccessible locations. "The city has been undertaking these types of lining projects since 1994 and has found this a cost-effective way to improve flow and reduce maintenance problems," noted Public Works Director Paul Kauppi.

Sewer mains will be lined on Ebba Street, Jansen Avenue, Oak Street and Roth Place.

Kauppi said the city has a total of 120 miles of sanitary sewer, about 20 miles of which is made of more modern PVC material that does not require lining.

Council Member Kevin Edberg commented that "most of us don't spend any time thinking about what we can't see until something really bad happens. We have 120 miles of really important stuff."

• Approved a request by Beckmann Custom Homes LLC for a minor subdivision and two variances at 4783 Otter Lake Road. The two 20-foot variances allow two lot widths of 80 feet.

• Approved a request by Len Schreier for two variances at 4775 Brooke Court. The applicant needed a 2-foot variance from the 20-foot side yard setback to install a 544-square-foot in-ground pool and 10-foot variance from the front yard setback for a fence.

• Approved a request by Susan Welles of Husnik Homes on behalf of Molly Theno for three variances at 4870 Johnson Ave. The applicant is constructing a new two-car attached garage.

• Adopted the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

• Approved a request by Therese Faison for a special home occupation permit extension at 4445 Lincoln Ave. The permit grants a three-year extension allowing a massage therapy business to operate out of a triplex.

• Issued a massage therapist license to Farrah Fisher at Sunbear Salon and Medspa.

• Heard from City Manager Ellen Hiniker that residents are being asked to conserve water during the heat wave. City ordinance does have water restriction rules. According to municipal code, irrigation is prohibited between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day from May 1 through Sept. 30.

Fresh fish: Get in the game this summer

More than a million fishing licenses are sold annually in Minnesota. Fishing—and eating fish—is part of our collective DNA. We’ve been casting to our lakes, rivers and neighborhood ponds for generations. There may be no better representation of the natural bounty of our state than the summer fish fry.

Fried fish is timeless, and goes well with other pleasures of summer like fruit salad and anything from the garden. These meals can be made wherever you can heat oil, whether that be at home or the cabin, in a campsite or on some distant shore.

Where taste and texture are concerned, fresh fish (not frozen) is considered best. After cleaning, rinse and dry the fillets. Seal in a container with as little air as possible, and store in refrigerator or on ice for up to a couple of days.

10,000 Fish & Chips A battered-and-fried way to enjoy our state fish, the walleye, as well as perch, white bass or even Northern pike. A Minnesota classic like Grain Belt makes a fine beer batter. Pair with hot steak fries or try making your own “chips” with potatoes from one of our local farmer’s markets.

Serve with malt vinegar or honey mustard.

A great way to spice up your average Tuesday. Cabbage brings a cool crunch, and a creamy sauce pulls everything together. Layer fish in a white flour tortilla with red onion, cilantro, thinly-sliced cabbage and sauce.

1. Divide fi llets into smaller pieces 2. Pat dry and dip in egg 3. Coat in Shore Lunch or seasoned flour 4. Fry in oil until flaky

Perfect for flatter, bun-shaped fi llets like crappie; also great for sunfish, white bass, walleye or perch. Fish sandwiches make a classic North Country meal accompanied by pasta salad and Jell-o.

John Albert Foreman John Albert Foreman of White Bear Lake, Minnesota born on Feb. 6, 1940 died on June 12, 2021. Preceded in death by parents, Terrell C. and Bernice D. Foreman; and brother, Dr. Richard T. Foreman. Survived by loving wife, Ruthann, of 59 years; son, Christopher (Marilyn) Foreman; daughter, Susan Foreman; son, Brock (Leslie) Foreman; granddaughter, Clare Foreman; and grandsons, Christian and Eric Foreman. John was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota and a resident of White Bear Lake for 51 years. He graduated from Minnehaha Academy High School, the University of Minnesota and University of California Berkeley, receiving a Master’s Degree in Economics. He was CEO of family owned Foreman & Clark Men’s Clothing in the Midwest. He was a member of Community of Grace Lutheran Church (formerly First Lutheran Church) of White Bear Lake.

He loved God and his faith was very strong in Jesus Christ his Savior. Special love and thanks to the staff and caregivers at the Pillars of White Bear Lake for their excellent and faithful care of John and thank you to Fairview Hospice for their care and devotion to John as his health declined. Tatsuko Ogata

Over Mother’s Day weekend, Tatsuko Ogata was surrounded by three generations of family members, each of whom she had uniquely shaped. With her eyes gleaming in the morning sun, she radiated matriarchal elegance, as always.

Three weeks later, that light flickered out, but its afterglow endures in the lives of those lucky enough to be touched by her grace: a luminosity of love undimmed in death; a legacy of influence unbroken in life.

Tatsuko “Tats” Ogata, née Matsushita, was born into a farming family on January 11, 1928 in Compton, California, one of six children raised by their Japanese immigrant parents, Shigeshi and Kumi Matsushita.

Along with thousands of other Japanese Americans during World War II, her family was interned at the Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona when she was 14.

After three years of imprisonment, Tats moved to Minnesota, where she found a job at a floral shop out of high school. She later met and married Mikiri “Mickey” Ogata. They had three kids, whom they raised in Minnesota and California.

Tats dedicated herself to caring for the kids at home, but once they left she secured a job in the county’s human services department in Spicer, Minnesota.

She rose through the ranks until she became director, with no college education but ample intelligence and tenacity, as well as an infectious laugh that could warm the coldest of hearts.

In the early 1990s, Tats and Mickey moved to Livingston, Montana, where she revived a familiar motherly role by doting on her grandkids. Years later, as she entered her 90s, that deep well of love was still full enough for her to play and laugh with her greatgrandkids, who thought her cane was a magic wand, because she was magic.

For as much as she helped others, she was reluctant to accept help for herself, even as she grew weak with age. But everyone wanted to lend a hand, to repay the devotion she had so widely distributed for decades, in seemingly endless supply.

Tats passed away peacefully in her home on June 1 in Livingston, Montana. She was 93. She was preceded in death by Mickey in 2006 and is survived by son Harley Ogata (Christina); daughter Robin Ogata; daughter Jody Ogata (Bob); granddaughter Carly Ogata (Max); grandson Myers Reece (Kate); granddaughter Lani Asman (Zach); granddaughter Kaylee Asman (Zadkiel); great-grandchildren Samuel Ogata and Fisher and Gus Reece; and many other relatives too numerous to list but all of whom she loved.

In death, she remains the tie that binds together a sprawling diaspora of loved ones, a connective tissue that makes all of their lives fuller, forever.

Norma Kathleen Straight (née Kusser) Norma Kathleen Straight, née Kusser, passed away on June 5, 2021, surrounded by her family.

Norma was born on October 15, 1932, to Lillian (Enger) Kusser and Phillip Henry Kusser on the family homestead in Hyde County, South Dakota, in the same log cabin room as her father.

Late in her life, she loved to recall all the fun she had with her brothers and sisters and helping her mom feed all those who would gather at harvest time.

Norma attended Northern State Teachers College and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1952, she married Dwaine Straight, who would be her husband, best friend and love of her life for very nearly 69 years. She and Dwaine created a life together built on faith, love and devotion. They rarely left one another’s side and provided a strong foundation for their three children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She excelled professionally as an office manager and would often say she loved “working with numbers.”

Norma also volunteered her time teaching the neighborhood children, teaching cooking and sewing through 4-H programs, serving as a church usher and providing Meals on Wheels.

Norma loved spending time with her family, serving her widely acclaimed Swedish Tea Ring and Marshmallow Fruit Salad, gardening, camping, fishing, golfing and traveling.

She is survived by her loving husband Dwaine Straight of Vadnais Heights; her children Mike (Dottie) Straight of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Brad (Mary) Straight of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin; Kathy/Kate (Rob) Huebsch of White Bear Lake; her grandchildren Christy (Loran) Gutt, John Huebsch (Carrie Thornton), Chelsey (Barry) Weintraub, and Jacob Huebsch; and her great-granddaughters Ella and Lily Gutt; all of whom she loved beyond measure. She is also survived by her brother Phillip Kusser and sister Joan Hardwick.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Richard and William Kusser; and sisters Theresa Weber and Bernice Mason. She talked about them often and we know she is with them now.

“Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.”

Gift helps Cerenity update senior apartments WHITE BEAR LAKE — Cerenity Senior Care received a major gift from the Manitou Fund, a private, grant-making foundation headquartered in White Bear Lake.

The lead gift will be used to renovate the first 10 apartments at Cerenity Residence, a $1.9 million project to update the’80s-era, 43-unit building.

Improvements include enlarging bathrooms with roll-in showers, wider doorways, new flooring and full-size kitchens with stainless steel appliances.

"We are excited about this project," said Peg Black, Cerenity Foundation director. "The residence was originally designed for independent seniors, but the aging population is changing, living longer and requiring more use of wheelchairs in the assisted living setting. These renovations will keep people independent longer."

Black added that fundraising to support the project, rather than taking on additional debt, will allow Cerenity to keep rent prices affordable for average income seniors. "We hope the community will see the value of this project and support it," she said.

"Seniors have given so much to our community, we are enriched by their presence and we need to provide them with a nourishing living place," noted Jim Rathburn, board chair for Cerenity White Bear Lake Foundation. "Affordable, high-quality senior housing in our community is critical."

The Manitou Fund was created by the late Minnesota businessman Donald McNeely and his wife, Marjorie. It is one of the largest charitable foundations in the state.

Arts, White Bear Lake. The Rising Star award is given annually to individuals who work in the local community who demonstrate outstanding leadership, both at work and in the community.

Lauren Welch has been involved with Children's Discovery Academy of Early Learning for most of her life. She attended Children's Discovery from the time she was an infant through private kindergarten and the school age program. Once she graduated from Luther College with her Bachelor of Arts in business, it was natural for her to be offered a full-time position at Children's Discovery.

In 2018, Welch was a participant in the VHEDC North Metro Young Professionals cohort. She developed leadership skills to the next level — giving her numerous ideas that she was able to bring back to her workplace.

Rising Star award winner Caleb Peterson's nomination said he is someone who truly is “one in a million.” He is the defi nition of team player. Peterson joined Frandsen in 2016 and was promoted to the position of business banker in 2018.

He was a participant in the VHEDC 2019 North Metro Young Professionals cohort. He spearheaded the PPP loan process at the bank and was an integral part in the merger from Peoples Bank Midwest to Frandsen Bank & Trust. His impact is reaching across organizations throughout the community.

Britts participated in the 2020 VHEDC Northeast Metro Young Professionals cohort. She has also developed a behind-the-scenes program to help ensure that all kids in the surrounding communities are

able to experience theater at their own comfort level. While COVID-19 hit in 2020 and presented a number of challenges, Brits thrived and always made sure that “the show went on.”

During COVID-19, NYFS recognized there was a need to reach people, especially seniors, who were feeling isolated in their own homes.

“As part of COVID, we added telephone reassurance calls to help with reducing isolation due to COVID,” Jebens-Singh said. “We also created more educational resources on our website with outreach videos and testimonials as a way to create greater awareness during this time.”

The Youth Diversion Program partners with local police departments, school districts and the Ramsey County Attorney General’s Office. “This allows kids to have a pathway outside of traditional criminal justice for fi rst-time or minor infractions like graffiti, truancy and things like that,” Jebens-Singh said.

NYFS receives a number of grants to support mental health professionals (school-based therapists) embedded within the local school districts.

These professionals are invited by the school districts to partner with them, and they work with the school community to support educators in that school. They are also able to identify students who would benefit from mental health services.

“Because of the funding that we have, the intention is to reduce any barriers for students to obtain mental health services. Those barriers include time, transportation, insurance or cost of services,” Jebens-Singh said. “School is where they are interacting with their peers and are either thriving or struggling within the social environments. That’s where people can identify whether they would need additional support. It’s within that supportive community that kids are getting the help they need.”

NYFS’s newest program (now in its second year) is the Community Advocacy Program. It partners with five suburban police departments—in Roseville, White Bear Lake, St. Anthony Village, New Brighton and Mounds View.

According to Jebens-Singh, this program serves people who have been involved with local law enforcement and have needs that cannot be sufficiently addressed by law enforcement alone. This can include mental health issues, family instability, medical care and other needs. Addressing these underlying issues reduces the need for law enforcement intervention in the future.

NYFS offers services for all economic situations and are supported by 15 local municipalities, including Shoreview, Hugo, White Bear Lake, White Bear Township, North Oaks, Mounds View, Mahtomedi and Vadnais Heights.

“These municipalities invest in NYFS because they believe their communities are better by having these resources available to their community members,” Jebens-Singh said. “That’s important, because we’re truly here because the community has said, ‘these are essential services that individuals should have access to.’”

Local pilot receives prestigious Wright Brothers Award Wesley Frank, resident of Vadnais Heights, received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, awarded to pilots with “50 years of exemplary aviation flight experience, distinguished professionalism, and steadfast commitment to aviation safety.” Wes has multiple pilot ratings, including private pilot, sea plane, commercial, instrument, and instructors ratings. He has 4800 hours of flying experience and has been accident-free for 52 years.

Frank says he is most proud of the experience instructing his two children - Chantel Scherman of North Oaks and Cheldon Frank of Hugo, and one of his grandchildren, Calla Frank, who is an aviation student at Minnesota State University -and helping them get their private pilots licenses.

“To watch your children and grandchild take off and land an aircraft on their own as a result of your own instruction is an awesome experience that puts a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye.” says Frank.

The Frank family hosted an award celebration with a pancake breakfast in their hangar at Anoka Blaine Airport June 6. Family and fellow pilots attended to pay tribute to his accomplishments.

Frank, who is retired, continues to fly his Cessna Cardinal out of Anoka airport, most often to Roseau, Minnesota, where he has a cabin on the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods.

Sprinkling Policy The City has a sprinkling policy for its municipal water system users in effect from June 1 to September 15 to ensure an adequate water supply to meet consumer and emergency needs.

The guidelines are easy to remember. Homes and businesses with addresses ending with an even number may water their lawns on even-numbered days; addresses ending in an odd number may sprinkle on odd-numbered days.

A waiver from this policy may be requested for newly seeded or sodded lawns, or newly planted trees or landscape materials. The Cordes method: Learn to play piano without notes Paul Cordes of White Bear Lake has decades of piano experience, including teaching, playing and tuning. Cordes also created his own teaching method, called the “play by ear method.”

Cordes said it’s not a one-to-one teaching method, but rather a self-teaching method. Cordes method provides all that’s needed to learn to play the piano confidently without notes and totally by ear.

After paying a one-time cost, all materials needed will be sent.

Because there are no in-person lessons, anyone anywhere can learn the method.

Cordes started teaching the method when he published it in 2004, but he created the method over a 30year period.

He explained he started out using a different method that worked well at the time, but then he wanted to create a better method that was more appropriate for self-teaching.

“Through a process of editing over and over again, I ended up with four steps. If one follows the directions very carefully and does it once every day for maybe 10 or 15 minutes, you get to at least a fi rst-grade level by four months,” Cordes explained.

Cordes said the value in using the self-teaching method is that learners can repeat a step or do it as much as they want and go at any speed they want.

one thinking he doesn’t appreciate the traditional teaching method, but believes people can get farther with the self-taught method fi rst before going to a teacher.

“I always wanted to be able to play by ear myself, not only someone else’s music but spontaneously make my own music as well. I feel that the people who can do that at any level will play for life. Many people who take lessons, that’s the last time when the lessons are

The fi rst step in the Cordes method is about melodies, the second step is to learn six scales, the third step is learning three cords that fit with any melody and the fourth step is the one-cord progression that’s universal.

Cordes said people have to be willing to trust that they may not see any progress the fi rst few weeks. He said they’ll have to wait while their brain works to process the method.

“If they stick with it, at some point in the fi rst three or four weeks, it clicks. It’s something like riding a bicycle, all of a sudden they’ll know how to balance,” Cordes said.

Cordes grew up in the Midway area in St. Paul. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, he spent 10 years teaching in the classroom, five in San Francisco in the ’60s and five years in St. Louis after that. Then he moved to the Twin Cities to fi nish his master’s degree in fi ne arts at the University of Minnesota.

Cordes is not only educated as a teacher but a church musician. He is currently a director of music at Berea Lutheran Church in Richfield. There, he plays at nearly every Sunday service.

He has been a church organist for 61 years and began playing at age 5.

“My brothers and my sister were getting lessons and I wanted them too, but I guess I was the one that had the gene that said I should keep going,” Cordes said.

Anyone can learn to play the piano, but the one ingredient that people need for his teaching method is the desire to learn, Cordes said.

Daring baserunner delivers section title for Zephyrs

Ethan Loss has the green light on the base paths for the Mahtomedi baseball team. Indeed, the word “stop” doesn’t appear to be in his vocabulary.

With that mindset, Loss delivered his version of a home run to pull out a 7-6, eight-inning win over Hill-Murray for the Section 4AAA championship Thursday evening at University of Northwestern.

With two outs in the last of the eighth, the Zephyr leadoff man dropped a blooper between three fielders in shallow right field. That’s a single for most batters, but a double for Loss. Then, despite already being in scoring position, he stole third base, diving in just ahead of the tag, with pinch-hitter Sam Ruzynski at the plate.

And when H-M’s Luke Black skipped a wild pitch past the catcher, Loss lit out for home. The backstop is very shallow at the UN ballpark and the catcher retrieved the ball quickly, but Loss barreled across the plate just ahead of the tag by Black, setting off a delirious celebration.

“Loss is the best baserunner I have ever had, or seen,” coach Rob Garry declared. “I gave him a green light signal at second, which means if he thinks he can take the base, it is his option. There are five times more ways to score from third than from second with two outs. It was worth the risk to us.”

Mahtomedi, who had previously beat the Pioneers 2-0, went 4-0 in the section and took a 17-5 record into the state Class AAA tournament, starting Tuesday in Jordan.

Mahtomedi overcame numerous mistakes. They had five base-runners thrown out by the alert Pioneers. Three of the six runs off Zephyr starter Luke Loughlin scored on two-out infield errors.

Injury points sink Zephyrs in state tennis; Pham brothers 3rd in doubles

The Mahtomedi tennis team had to give away two points due to injuries and lost to Rochester Mayo 4-3 in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament at Prior Lake Tuesday, June 8.

“Not an easy way to lose, for sure,” Zephyr coach Aaron Freer said. “I thought we could overcome the injury default at 1-singles, but to overcome two ‘retires’ is a tall feat. We almost had it.”

The Zephyrs got a nice consolation as Dylan and Brandon Pham placed third in the state doubles tournament the next two days.

Mahtomedi defaulted at No. 1 singles due Will Lieberman’s ligament injury.

He missed half the year with it, but played in the sectional. “Will gave it a go for a game, and just couldn’t put pressure on it to push off,” Freer said.

The team score was 3-3 with 2-singles still on the court. Taj Bhagra of Mayo had won the first set 6-1. Sam Rathmanner took the second set 6-4 and led 2-0 in the third, but started to severely cramp up.

“He tried pushing through a few more games but couldn’t place any weight on his left leg,” Freer lamented. “We had to retire the match, for his future and for safety concerns.”

The Zephyrs, in their first state tourney match since 2013, got wins from Brandon Pham and David Azcona at 3-4 singles. Seniors Adam Radabaugh and Sam Kalkman prevailed 7-5, 7-6 to give Mahtomedi a 3-2 lead. Mayo pulled back even at 1-doubles.

With no consolation round this year, the Zephyrs finished 19-6. Mayo lost to Wayzata 6-1 in the semi-finals. Edina handed Mayo its first loss 4-3 in the finals.

The Pham brothers — normally, Brandon plays singles and Dylan plays doubles — beat Century’s Henry Kruse and Alec Sargent 6-1, 6-2; beat Wayzata’s Aaron Beduhn 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; lost to Edina’s eventual champions Otto Schreiner and Luke Westholder 6-3, 6-1; and beat Duluth East’s Ty Kruger and Dane Patten in the third place match 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.

“They have been a terrific addition to our team,” Freer said. “They are extremely smart players who have high first-ball percentages, meaning they don't give away many free points to their opponents, which is so key in doubles.

Five White Bear Lake boys qualified for the state track meet — Arthur Perron, Jeffrey Odamtten, Gavin Rogers, Brennan Cashman and Ernest Mattson — while the Bears placed second in Section 4AA on Tuesday and Thursday.

Perron, a junior, was the Bears’ lone gold medalist, taking the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15:28.

Placing second were Cashman, a senior, in pole vault with 11-0; Odamtten, a senior, in 300 hurdles with 40.54; Mattson, a junior, in the 800 run with 1:58.52; and Rogers, a junior, in triple jump with 42-7.

The top two in each event advance to state, slated for Saturday at St. Michael-Albertville at 10 a.m.

The top five teams among 14 were (1) Stillwater 198.5 (2) White Bear Lake 157 (3) Roseville Area 132 (4) St. Paul Central 85 (5) St. Paul Highland Park 71.5.

In the long jump, Rogers took fourth (21-2) and Seth Olson fifth (20-11 1/2). Nick Svir placed fourth in discus (135-8) and sixth in shot put (42-6 1/2).

The Bears scored heavily in relays. The 4x800 team placed second with Zachary Thomas, Locke, Sage Durdle and Mattson (8:20.54). The quartet of Odamtten, Rogers, Olson, and Vaulx placed third in both the 4x100 (43.74) and 4x200 (1:30.84). The 4x400 was fifth with Charles Olsen, Aaron Barton, Durdle and Garrett Thom (3:37.65).

Girls lacrosse: awards, leaders announced The White Bear Lake girls lacrosse team has four all-conference picks and three players who have committed to college teams.

Named to the all-Suburban East team for the Bears, who finished 9-6, were senior midfielder Sophie Davis, senior attacker Caylin Kunze, freshman attacker Jaeda Jansen, and freshman midfielder Beverly Peterson.

Coach Colleen Cameron reports that Davis will play for Detroit Mercy (Division I), Kunze for Tiffin University in Ohio (Division II), and Abigail Franta for University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse (Division III).

Davis was named team Most Valuable Player and got all-state honorable mention.

Jansen was the Bears top scorer with 33 goals and nine assists for 42 points, followed

by Kunze (25-9-34), Davis (24-9-33), Natascha Larson (20-6-26), and Kennedy Ashton (193-22). Franta got the coaches association academic all-state award and USA Lacrosse all-academic (top 13 in state). Olivia VanHout batted .531 in 18 games (34-for-64) for the Mahtomedi softball team with three triples, a homer, and a double. The junior outfielder also notched 21 runs, 12 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

She hit .529 in five Section 4AAA games (9-for-17) with five runs, helping the Zephyrs (12-12) place second in the section.

White Bear Lake nabbed three gold medals at the Section 4AA track meet and will have entrants in four events at the state meet. The Bears placed third among 14 teams in action Tuesday and Thursday at Stillwater.

Oreoluwa Olusi, junior, won shot put with 37 feet, 3 3/8 inches, leading a strong showing by three Bear throwers. Jillian Ballata placed third in discus (108-6) and seventh in shot put with 33-1. Olusi was fifth in discus (105-8) with Khushi Bhakta seventh (101-0).

Katelyn Porter, sophomore, was 400-meter champ with 59.71, breaking a minute for the first time. Danielle Madden, senior, took second in the 200 dash in 25.85, also a personal best.

Against Stillwater (22-1) and brilliant pitcher Allison Benning, the Bears got solo home runs from Mik Stowe (on the first pitch of the game) and Maddie Petersen, and an RBI single from Stowe. Benning has an ERA around 1.00, and had allowed just one homer all season.

Petersen, the Bears starting pitcher, was pulled after giving up a single and two walks to load the bases in the first. Chloe Barber struck out three straight batters but wild-pitched a run home. In the fourth the Ponies ripped five straight hits and got three runs.

Against Woodbury, the Bears sprayed out 14 hits against Nicole Stickels— including two more solo homers, by Jordyn Meyer and Stowe — but left 12 runners on base and had two base-runners thrown out. Defensively, the Bears’ walks and errors led to Woodbury’s last five runs.

Woodbury took a 3-0 lead against Peterson including Riley Rosenthal’s leadoff homer. Barber threw six innings (nine strikeouts, three runs) and took the loss.

The Bears, down 4-2 in the last of seventh, got a run on hits by Olsen and Heidi Barber, and Stickels’ throwing error, then loaded the bases with nobody out. The golden opportunity was missed. Petersen struck out on a wild pitch that let Barber score from third, but the Bears tried to score another run and were out at home.

In the eighth, Stickels delivered a tworun single with two outs. In the bottom half, she got the first two batters out before Stowe homered just over the center field fence, and Olsen and Heidi Barber hit linedrive singles. That brought Chloe Barber (11 homers, 35 RBI’s this year) to the plate, but Stickels threw her out on a dribbler down the first base line.

My run began on June 2 and peaked at 96º on Thursday, June 10. Nine of the first thirteen days of the month were in the 90's at my station. Loon Chronicles VI: Staying postive

AS PREDICITED, THE SECOND CHICK ARRIVED ON MAY 28, 2021. AFTER ONE FUN FILLED DAY OF SIBLING RIVALRY, RIDES ON MAMA’S BACK AND DOUBLE FISH DELIVERIES, ONE OF THE CHICKS DID NOT SURVIVE.

The last two weeks can best be described as bittersweet. After the successful hatch of the first chick during a storm on May 27, we were lifted by the sunny and warm weather forecasted to welcome the second chick on the following day. We were not disappointed.

The second chick arrived right on time and appeared to enjoy the curiosity of its sibling and hiding underneath its mother’s wing.

The father made endless deliveries of fish to each chick on the nest or while riding on their mother’s back. We spotted the family at sunset, with chicks on the nest, and parents on and/or near the nest.

Nirvana. We were not, at all, prepared for what greeted us the next morning. As we rounded the bulrushes near the nest, we spotted the father delivering a tiny fish to one chick that popped out from under its mother’s wing to receive it. After the chick swallowed the fish, the father dove for what we assumed would be another fish for the second chick. He popped up near a floating object, which we could not identify from our vantage point. After the father left the object and returned to making fish deliveries, we discovered the object was one of the chicks, floating upside down and no longer alive. There were no visible signs of predation. Rather than letting the poor thing become Eagle bait and invite other predators, we decided to gently scoop up the dead chick and make arrangements to have it delivered to the DNR for a necropsy. Len called the Loon experts at Mantrap Lake, who advised that it is not uncommon for some chicks to choke on fish or swallow objects that are too large for their tiny throats.

Whatever the cause, it was devastating to see and hard not to think about for the rest of the week. The good news is that the parents are hypervigilant about their parenting and are spending more time with their remaining chick, who is thriving. With double fish deliveries and 100% of its parents’ attention, the odds are good that it will make it through the summer. The chick is one month ahead of last year’s chicks, in terms of development, and has more than doubled in size during the last two weeks. The chick is now diving and this has really put the parents through their paces trying to keep track of it.

Fish deliveries are getting easier and more frequent. The chick also is working on preening, wing flaps, and foot waggles. The chick is too big to ride on its parents’ backs, but is able to keep up with the parents, even in big waves. Fingers are crossed for continued good news.
