School district looks forward to a postCOVID future

The playground was dedicated in memory and appreciation of employee Joe Momsen’s 37 years of service to the city of Vadnais Heights.

During the ceremony it was noted he would have appreciated the playground because he was “a child at heart.”

It was a school year like no other, and the members of the school board congratulated all White Bear Lake students for getting through the worst and best of it at their last meeting of the 2020-2021 school year on June 14.

“Graduation is commendable on its own, but the many twists and turns that the class of 2021 experienced as they finished up their high school career put them in a special place in history,” said Superintendent Wayne Kazmierczak. “The grace and resilience these students have developed during the experience will help them continue to thrive as they meet and overcome adversity in the future.”

The district will continue to see changes in the near future—the more welcome kind—as North Campus will be expanded to include grades 11-12 and South Campus will be remodeled to be a home for future Sunrise Park Middle Schoolers by 2024.

The changes will require a lot of structural work spread across the district. At its June 14 meeting, the school board awarded the sale of facilities maintenance bonds to J.P. Morgan in the amount of $27.9 million. These bonds will primarily be used to fund the expansion at North Campus over the next several years. The district accepted bids from developers Kraus-Anderson in the amount of $148.9 million for this North Campus project. At the same time, the board also accepted bids in the amount of $6.3 million for phase 2 of an addition and renovation project at South Campus. This phase of the project includes a classroom and office addition, as well as renovations and the creation of flexible learning spaces for when the Sunrise Park staff and students transition into the building. 1st show premieres at the Northern Lights Outdoor Stage Like most small nonprofits over this past year, Children's Performing Arts (CPA) was trying to figure out how to stay connected with its students and community throughout the pandemic.

“As things kept shutting down and remaining shut down, we started to make plans,” said Sharon Hanifl-Lee, CPA board chair. “We understood the importance of getting the students into an in-person environment as soon as possible.”

With uncertainty about when venues would start opening again, CPA decided to move its summer schedule outside. In December 2020, CPA was granted the funds to purchase a portable outdoor stage at the Hanifl Performing Arts Center.

The stage was purchased from an entertainment company looking to consolidate inventory in the midst of the pandemic.

“It was the exact right timing, both for us as well as the company wanting to sell,” said Hanifl-Lee. The stage had originally been housed in Florida and made its journey in early May to the back parking lot of the Hanifl Performing Arts Center, where both CPA and Lakeshore Players Theatre (LPT) will be using it throughout the summer.

Wolgamot Lake Links Trail Enhancement Fund Announced The Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation (GWBLCF) has established the Wolgamot Lake Links Trail Enhancement Fund in honor of Steve Wolgamot.

Steve has been an integral force in establishing the Lake Links Trail and securing state funding. The trail – 21 years in the making - will be a safe 10-mile walking and bicycling trail that will benefit all the communities that share the shores of White Bear Lake and beyond.

The GWBLCF established the fund with an initial investment of $2,500. Since then, more than $10,800 has been donated. The fund’s purpose is to provide enhancements along the Lake Links Trail outside of the initial infrastructure, such benches, water fountains and signage.

As GWBLCF Board Chair Carol McFarlane stated in her remarks about Steve at the J. Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award event, “Because of people like Steve, our community thrives.”

CPA also hosted a community naming contest. The official name is The Northern Lights Outdoor Stage.

The first full-length outdoor production on the stage — “You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown” — will be performed June 19-27. Tickets are

In July, Lakeshore Players Theatre opens “Company.” Tickets are available at lakeshoreplayers.org. A joint production with CPA and LPT, “Fame the Musical,” will premiere in August.

Abundant area beaches offer relief from summer’s heat

If June has been any indication, the summer of 2021 will cause many in the area to seek swimming beaches as an alternative to air conditioning.

When they do, they will find plenty of choices.

Ramsey County currently has nine swimming beaches on the roster (fluctuating water levels can shutter some occasionally). In a typical year, five of those nine are staffed with lifeguards.

According to Kristopher Lencowski, director of park operations, there were an estimated 48,000 visitors in 2018 to those beaches, with “similar numbers” in 2019. Due to COVID-19, there were no lifeguards (and no counts) in 2020.

In 2021, Lake McCarrons County Park has the only Ramsey County beach with a lifeguard presence.

McCarrons was selected as the sole guarded site because it receives high use — approximately 15,000 visitors in 2018 — as well as the fact that it serves a diverse population.

White Bear Lake County Park typically sees about one-third as many visitors as McCarrons in a year, but Lencowski points out that an extended area of shallow water is a nice feature there. He also reports that despite notoriously low water levels in White Bear Lake in recent years, the sand beach has seen a marked reduction this year because of high water. In addition, he advises swimmers to rinse off and towel dry promptly because swimmer’s itch has been reported there recently.

In Washington County, large, sandy beaches await beachgoers at Big Marine Lake and Square Lake parks.

Square Lake County Park hosted an estimated 140,000 visitors compared to Big Marine’s 105,000 in 2020. This may be in part because of the nature of

Square Lake itself. Guest Services Supervisor J.J. Williams explains, “The beach is a bigger draw at Square Lake, mainly because of the water quality.”

The water is famously clear and popular with divers, and the park has been labeled a “special recreational feature” by the Metropolitan Council.

This year, the Lake Elmo Swim Pond will be the only guarded facility in the Washington County park system, from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday-Monday.

To enter Washington County parks, a $7/day visitor pass is required; free admission is available on select Tuesdays.

There is a large and popular beach facility on the west shore of Centerville Lake, part of the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve. It is close to both the picnic area and campground, and adjacent to a trail system that circumscribes the lake. There will not be a lifeguard on duty this season. $6/day vehicle pass required.

A few cities maintain beaches, some of which could be described as wellkept secrets.

Mahtomedi Beach, on the southeast shore of White Bear Lake, has restrooms, exterior showers, a sandy

beach and extended sand play area.

There will be lifeguards on duty every day from noon to 8 p.m. through August 21.

Visitors to Lakeside Beach in Forest Lake will find a beach with plenty of sun and sand. It may not be staffed with lifeguards, but it does have restrooms, changing areas, exterior showers, and an adjacent playground.

With a hot start to summer and lifeguards on duty at only a minority of beaches in the area, swimmer safety is a concern. Visitors are advised to be familiar with and observe park rules.

Among other things, those rules in Washington and Ramsey County parks disallow use of pool noodles, inflatables or similar items. Lencowski explains that such swimming aids pose danger to swimmers because they obscure views into the water and give a false sense of safety. “We highly recommend people use Coast Guard-approved life jackets.”

He is also quick to warn anyone in a supervisory role not to let phones, books and other distractions take their attention off swimmers.

DNR stresses safety on the water The number of boating fatalities reported at this point in the season is the highest in more than a decade, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

As of June 16, as many as nine people have been victims of boating fatalities. In addition, a higher-than-average number of people have drowned at places like beaches and swimming pools.

The people who have drowned so far this season span the age, gender and swimming ability spectrum. DNR safety officials offer the following tips for staying safe around the water: • Wear a life jacket. All children and adults should wear a life jacket anytime they’re around the water. Each year even adults who are good swimmers go under the water and never resurface.

• Avoid alcohol. Its effects are magnified on the water and the consequences can be deadly. About 40 percent of boating fatalities include alcohol.

• Designate a “water watcher.” This person puts down their cell phone or other distractions and focuses only on watching the water to ensure everyone is safe.

• Wade feet-first into the water to avoid jumping into an area where the current, depth and other conditions are unknown.

• Constantly supervise children while they are in or near the water. Looking away even for a moment is enough time for tragedy to strike. Drowning often doesn’t involve yelling, screaming and waving of the arms. Rather, it often occurs silently.

• Swim only in designated swimming areas.

Volunteers make community

C

ommunity events are back. Hugo Good Neighbor days was a hit, and fireworks were impressive.

White Bear Lake’s Marketfest kicks off July 1 after a year off. The Manitou Days community festival begins with the parade at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 2 followed by the Beach Dance from 8-11 p.m. at Memorial Beach.

Many thanks go out to the volunteers who lead our communities and make these events possible for everyone. It was more than 20 years ago that events like this were nearly dead. The fourth of July fireworks show was given up by the Yacht Club and taken on by volunteers with the help of the city of White Bear Lake. It’s this kind of cooperation that makes a community great. From event organizers Carter Johnson to business associations, volunteers play a major role in the look and feel of our towns, and the amenities that draw people to want to live here. Community engagement is something to be considered as local governments look at longterm infrastructure plans and housing strategies. A community needs a balance of single-family housing and condos, rentals and retirement housing. Different communities have different housing and transportation needs. I applaud our cities who seek input from residents about future plans, and I’m hopeful they will listen to the feedback citizens provide and proceed slowly and thoughtfully. Volunteers and citizens make a difference.

Get out and enjoy the various events this summer, and get involved in your community by volunteering.

South Dakota It felt good to get back together with friends in South Dakota for our father/son weekend of target shooting, four wheeling and taking in nature. This has been an annual trip for several years with my four college roommates and our sons, who are now all in high school.

With the high price of shotgun shells, we did not shoot trap and did not get to play the annual rounds of Annie Oakley. I love the variety of firearms we were able to try - old lever actions, bolt action, semi-automatics, iron sights, guns with scopes and BB guns. We continued to reinforce proper gun safety, field safety and how to clean, inspect and adjust the equipment. My favorite was a lightweight subsonic .22 long rifle and my sons was an old lever action .22. As the boys tried their hand at the different guns it is always fun to learn more about science behind the sport. This year we plunked more than 2,000 rounds in four days. Our fingertips were sore from loading the such small clips.

I tend to strike up conversations wherever I go. A local farmer said it’s been dry and the crops are stressed. The corn was hip high and the leaves were curling. Some fields had leaves turning yellow. In one field the alfalfa was diseased. I was impressed with the variety of native grasses on the farm. The different grasses provide cover for native birds and pheasant, which was introduced as a game bird to South Dakota in 1898. One second-generation local farmer we have known for years was experimenting with ground cover ideas like corn rows planted at 60 inches with a cover crop of beans were planted in between.

Normal rows are planted at 30 inches. He said he estimates a 30% savings in fertilizer. His dad said no one knew about where corn populations could be when he started.

Back then populations were 12,000; today in South Dakota 20,000 population per acre is common. I asked about the old saying “two in the hill” and he explained that years ago the germination of a seed was about 50% so they needed two seeds per hole.

South Dakota is amazing place, though the price of a hunting license was raised this year and could discourage the next generation of hunters. I encourage families to get out and experience the fields, hills and landscape our neighbor to the west has to offer. I hope to keep bringing my kids and grandkids someday on this annual trip.

Talking pet anxiety with U of M

s people begin to head back into the office, dogs and cats that have adjusted to their owners’ presence for the last year will have their own set of adjustments to make.

Anxiety at being left home alone can be real for many pets, particularly dogs. University of Minnesota’s Kristi Flynn, DVM, an assistant professor at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and Dana Emerson, VT, a certified training partner the Veterinary Movers & at Medical Center, offer advice on Shakers how owners can U of M help decrease their pet’s anxiety during the transition back to the office.

Q. How can people help prepare their dogs for more independence in the coming months?

Dr. Flynn: You can start this by simply leaving the room and going out of sight. There are a lot of dogs that will have some issue with this setup and will want to follow you. You can stop this by giving the dog a favorite toy or food in a puzzle treat just before you

depart, then returning before your dog completes his treat. This can teach them that your departure is something good as yummy treats occur when you leave. Work on leaving through the front door with little to no excitement from you at departure. You may need to work up to the point where you can actually open the door and leave without your dog getting worried.

You’ll also want to start extending the time between letting your dog outside to go to the bathroom so that they are trained to expect longer absences.

Q. How can people help prepare their dog for going back in a kennel?

Emerson: If you need to leave your dog kenneled while you are gone, work at getting them comfortable in the kennel. You can start by rewarding them with a treat or something they enjoy every time they go into the kennel.

You can also have them go into the kennel to eat each of their meals.

Don’t worry about closing the door as you start this transition, as this will help make the kennel a fun and enjoyable place.

Q. What steps can pet owners take to help calm down an anxious pet?

Dr. Flynn: Teach your dog to settle and relax on a mat. If you can teach the dog to self-soothe and calm themself, then the dog can use this skill as a way to lower their anxiety while you’re gone.

Q. What is the best way to greet pets when you come home?

Emerson: Embrace a boring return. When coming home, politely ignore your dog until they have calmed down. Do not talk or interact with your pet when they are overly excited, but if you need to let them outside do this with as little contact and interaction as possible. Once they are back in the house with you and are relaxed, feel free to interact with them.

Q: Will every pet need special attention to adjust to their owners’ return to the office?

Emerson: Every pet is an individual that can have days where they are more or less tolerant of being independent. If your dog prefers being on their own, they may have an easier adjustment when you return to the office.

On the other hand, if you have a pandemic puppy that has never been home alone for extended periods, you may have to do all these activities and more to help them adjust.

If things are not going well and your pet is having a difficult time with your absences, contact your local veterinary clinic to discuss your options.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Biases embedded in society

Council ignoring residents

In response to Joseph Kessel's letter on June 2 and Cathy Schultz's letter on June 9, I do not agree that racism does not exist in our community. When I read comments community members make regarding “those people” moving here if affordable housing is built or will use public transport resulting in a rise in crime, I always wonder what they mean by “those people.”

I do not agree that when you see the word “equity” you have a problem. If you believe this, then you also have a problem with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which requires that schools provide special education services in a way that provides accommodations that address individual differences, disabilities and special needs.

It is correct that equity and equality are different.

Equality means everyone is treated the same way, regardless of differences. Equity means everyone is provided with what they need to succeed. Educational equity means that every student has access to the resources they need at that moment in their education, and appropriate support to ensure that every child has an equal chance for success.

It is correct that our country was not founded on equity, but it was also not founded on equality. Equity acknowledges that not all have been given access to the same opportunities and addresses that imbalance. There are racial, ethnic, gender, class and other biases embedded in systems that make up our society. “Historians have explored biases in our housing policies, policing, medical care, and so on, and there are very few who would suggest that our systems are truly neutral.” (Heather Cox Richardson). If we look at housing, racial covenants were legal clauses embedded in property records that restricted ownership of land based on race. In Minnesota these were made illegal in 1962 but did not end nationally until the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968. There is an excellent documentary, “Jim Crow of the North,” which explores one reason for the racial disparities in Minnesota — the spread of these covenants.

Filibuster serves a purpose We live in the greatest country in the world, where we can freely share our opinions openly without fear of the thought police coming to put us in the gulag. Our ability to engage with each other is a gift.

I’m writing in response to Leslie Duling McCollam’s inaccurate characterization of the Senate’s legislative filibuster as racist, undemocratic or a thwarting tool of “progress.”

The filibuster is a procedural tool allowing senators to speak for as long as they like on a proposed piece of legislation. The “endless debate” provision can only be overruled if 3/5ths of the senators (60 of 100) vote to cut off the discussion. The result is that minority parties can kill legislation that could actually pass with a simple majority but that can’t get 60 votes.

I’m all for the filibuster, as it holds back any president who has a simple majority in both chambers from getting what they want and therefore causing greater partisanship and more polarization. Simply imagine your least favorite president passing their favorite legislation without any checks on that power. I imagine our last president’s ability to do so would send shivers down Leslie’s spine.

My point is that the filibuster cannot be an accursed vestige of slavery and Jim Crow when Republicans use it, and a perfectly fine tool of fairness and democracy when Democrats use it. Barack Obama and Joe Biden used the filibuster, and both defended its use passionately until recently, of course, when the Republicans were to use it.

The legislative process is supposed to be slow,

methodical, sticky, messy and based on compromise so we don’t create a ruling elite bent on making the other half miserable serfs. Personally, what I would like to see all U.S. senators and representatives promise to do for a year is absolutely nothing, zilch, nada. They create more problems for the average and least well-off Americans, the ones they want to help. Call your legislators and tell them you’ll give them a one-year paid vacation if they promise to do nothing. Now, that’s a bill I would support!

Thanks for support of music program As we have come to the end of the school year, I wanted to drop a note to thank your readers for their support of the White Bear Lake Music Boosters Spring Fundraiser over these last few months. In March, we celebrated Music In the Schools Month by launching an ambitious campaign to raise $21,000 (“$21K in ’21”) to support the amazing student musicians in our community, as well as the incredible music educators and programs the White Bear Lake School District offers our students.

The funds raised by the White Bear Lake Music Boosters go directly into each of the music programs we support in White Bear Lake Area schools. PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Burrs on walker a dead giveaway

A Vadnais Heights man, 25, faces up to one year imprisonment and/or an additional maximum fine of $3,000 for third-degree DWI with aggravating factors. That sentence could be doubled if he’s convicted of an additional charge — driving with an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater.

At 12:32 a.m. June 2, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash at 4095 Oak Crest Drive in Vadnais Heights. On arrival at the scene, deputies observed a vehicle backed into a ditch on the east side of the road without its driver. During an inventory search of the vehicle, deputies found the registered owner’s identification in the glovebox.

A witness told deputies she’d seen a male walking in a northerly direction. Soon afterward, another deputy located the male, covered with burrs, stumbling around a yard near the crash scene and identified him by his driver’s license.

If deputies questioned the subject’s state of intoxication, no doubts remained after he showed all the classic signs of drunkeness, including several rounds of projectile vomiting. After a very messy squad car ride, the subject arrived at the patrol station for testing. He registered a 0.18 blood alcohol reading nearly two hours after the crash.

• A Keep Our Police Safe (KOPS) alert was issued at 10:38 a.m. June 6 following a pursuit that began in the 800 block of County Road E after Ramsey County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the scene of an erratic driver. The chase lasted eight miles and was terminated when the subject led deputies and Chisago County deputies toward high-volume traffic on I-35E and I-94.

• A female juvenile was arrested June 11 at the Vadnais Heights Walmart in the 800 block of County Road D for shoplifting after deputies responded to a report of a theft at the store and found the juvenile to be reported missing out of Minneapolis. The girl was transported to Minneapolis, where she was placed into the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department.

• A St. Paul man, 21, was arrested on a warrant quarter past midnight June 7 on I-35E and I-694 following the traffic stop of a speeding vehicle.

• The Big D Construction Company on June 14 reported criminal damage to its construction trailers in an unsuccessful attempt to enter them over the weekend of June 11-13, while they were left on site near McMenemy Street and Highway 96.

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Vadnais Heights and White Bear Township:

• A Cambridge woman, 27, was arrested on four outstanding warrants and for theft and drug possession at 10:27 p.m. June 7 in the 800 block of County Road E after deputies responded to a theft report. The case has been forwarded to the county attorney for consideration of charges.

• A Shoreview man, 21, was cited for shoplifting at six minutes after midnight June 8 at Lakeridge Liquors in the 100 block of Vadnais Blvd. He was also issued a trespass notice and released.

• A White Bear Lake man, 26, was arrested June 9 in the 900 block of County Road E for possession of narcotics after deputies responded to the Fresh Thyme on a report of a man sleeping in a vehicle outside the business and found narcotics in the vehicle. The case has been forwarded to the county attorney for consideration of charges.

• A North Oaks woman reported a wallet taken from her purse June 10 while she was shopping at a box store in the 800

White Bear Township • A resident in the 2700 block of First Street received assistance from the Bitty Kitty Brigade June 7 after a feral cat gave birth to a litter of kittens on her porch. The Bitty Kitty Brigade is a nokill cat rescue organization focusing on orphaned neonatal kittens.

• A White Bear Township woman, 31, was arrested June 8 in the 5000 block of Williams Avenue for domestic assault after she assaulted a male, 30.

• The Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center (MAARC) reported the assault of a vulnerable adult June 9 in the 1000 block of Meadowlands Drive.

• A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a Toyota Tundra as it was parked in a driveway in the 3900 block of Effress Road overnight June 11-12.

WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS The Washington County Sheriff's Office reported the following selected incidents in Birchwood, Dellwood, Grant, Mahtomedi, Pine Springs and Willernie:

Birchwood • A Lake Avenue resident on May 23 reported people for being on the beach at night, saying that being able to hear people on the beach at night was disturbing and constituted harassment.

Dellwood • A Dellwood Avenue resident reported theft from a motor vehicle May 28.

Grant • An eastbound motorist was issued a written warning at 11:22 p.m. May 23 on Leeward Avenue N. and 75th Street N. for tabs that expired in April after Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a traffic stop for a headlight out. During the stop, deputies conducted a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check and discovered the tardy tabs. The driver was verbally warned about the missing headlight.

• An unidentified driver was arrested on a warrant at 3:15 a.m. May 24 on 75th Street N. and Lake Elmo Avenue N.

• A suspicious male appearing to look for rocks in a construction area on Inwood Way N. May 24 turned out to be worthy of suspicion after deputies on routine patrol noticed his car parked on the shoulder. When deputies ran his plate number, they learned he had several entries in the WCSO files for suspicious behavior in construction areas as part of an ongoing issue. The lurking construction site male then left the area. Deputies conducted extra patrol of the Inwood Way N. construction area in the following days.

• An unidentified motorist was arrested at 2:39 a.m.

May 25 on Lincolntown Road and Old Wildwood Road following a pursuit and a crash.

• A motorist was cited May 26 on Highway 36 for displaying tabs that expired in September 2020.

Pine Springs

Mahtomedi • A Minnesota motorist was cited May 23 on Long Lake Road for driving after suspension and possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in a motor vehicle after deputies spotted the subject without a front license plate and ran the rear license plate. After discovering the driver's suspended status, deputies conducted a traffic stop and smelled pot coming from the vehicle. They soon located the marijuana and paraphernalia.

• A motorist was cited May 25 in the 900 block of Stillwater Road for seat belt violation. Another driver was cited that same day for the same offense in the 700 block of Hilton Trail N. • A motorist was cited May 25 in the 800 block of Stillwater Road for possessing marijuana in a motor vehicle, following a traffic stop for multiple violations.

• A motorist was cited for speeding 82 mph in a 55 mph zone at 1:15 a.m. May 25 on Highway 36.

• A Minnesota motorist was cited May 26 on westbound Highway 36 for speeding 76 mph in a 55 mph zone by deputies on stationary patrol, who clocked him on radar.

Two other motorists were cited for speeding at that location that day.

Willernie • Deputies were dispatched out on an assault call May 24 on Paddington Road.

Student receives Environmental Leadership Award Anika Liner, a recent Mahtomedi High School graduate, received the 2021 MAGI/Wildwood Lions Environmental Leadership Award. Liner was recognized for her work with the Eco Club, including leading an Adopt-aStorm Drain project, Zero Impact Week, and the Trash Boat Project.

She will use the $1,000 award to pursue a degree at American University in Environmental Studies with a focus on law and policy.

Three Luther College student athletes from Mahtomedi have been inducted in the 2021 Chi Alpha Sigma Excellence in Athletics and Academics Honor Society. They are Kennedy Bergren (Soccer), Claire Roettger (Swimming) and Ben Nelson (Football).

Trevor Westerlund of Vadnais Heights received an agriculture scholarship and Stefanie Nelson of Mahtomedi received the Onan Family Scholarship from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.

Recent White Bear Lake High School graduate James Carney received the 2021 Hallberg Engineering scholarship, and plans to pursue a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering at North Dakota State University.

Claudia Verkerke, a graduate of White Bear Lake High School, was named captain of the 2021-22 Bemidji State University women's ice hockey team.

Author Dan Brown — No, not that one

Dan Brown looks like he was assembled in an underground laboratory at the Orvis Headquarters.

Tall and clean-cut, the Taylors Falls native arrived for his interview in a fleece vest atop a sweat-wicking, UV protective fishing shirt.

I know this for a fact, because I have the exact same shirt at home in my closet.

He pulled up in a small SUV, the rear window adorned with the kind of obligatory stickers that lets the world know he is indeed a fly fisherman. Everything about Brown exposes his passion for fly-fishing. I half expected him to get out of the car with a rod tube in one hand and a hazy IPA in the other.

Brown is a longtime fishing guide and freelance writer who wrote a weekly column for the Chisago County Press for many years. He was here to promote his recently released book, a collection of 75 of those columns — And if his name sounds familiar, you’re not mistaken.

Dan Brown is also the name of the famous author of “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels and Demons,” whose books have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Rather than change his name to avoid confusion, Brown chose to embrace the connection, and poke fun at it. He titled his book “Da Fishi Code: Serious and Not-So-Serious Stories from da Rivers, Lakes, Fields, and Life.”

Doubling down, the cover of Brown’s book also mirrors that of the “Da Vinci Code.” The Mona Lisa poses prominently on the right side, a large steelhead clasped in her usually non-existent fingers. The satire seems heavy-handed at first, but it dovetails nicely upon further inspection.

There’s something to be said about the brevity of a newspaper column. Writing a story in under a thousand words on a tight deadline is a little like defusing a bomb. Decisions have to be made quickly — cut the red wire or the blue wire

and live with the outcome either way. Brown effectively balances the urgency of a weekly newspaper column with the narrative prowess of more long-form writing.

The result is a book full of quick-hitting, highly personal and genuinely funny stories.

In just over 200 tightly packed pages, Brown details his personal fishing and hunting experiences over the last several decades, with a few odd tales unrelated to the outdoors mixed in for good measure.

Many of his columns are “in the moment” style stories of big trout caught on the Namekagon or fighting a sturgeon on a fly rod, but he really shines in the abstract. Brown quotes Thoreau, talks about hope and the restorative qualities of nature, and never misses an opportunity to describe the landscape surrounding him.

The publisher who told Norman Maclean he had too many trees in his manuscript would have surely rolled his eyes at “Da Fishi Code,” but Brown’s appreciation for the outdoors reads incredibly genuine, and his creative talent is legitimate.

One of the most striking stories in the book and a departure from his normal rhythm is “Two Nights in Chile.” Brown’s only venture into fiction, it was originally submitted to the “Prose for Papa” contest, held annually at the Ernest Hemmingway Festival in Ketchum, Idaho. The story borrows heavily from Hemmingway’s style, but stands up on its own in spite of that.

It follows a meandering, downtrodden writer on an exotic fishing trip to Chile that isn’t going as planned.

is lively and vivid, so much so that you forget you’re not in the middle of a novel when the story ends. It’s worth the price of the book alone.

In an age of outdoor media where storytelling is so often cast aside in favor of the 10 millionth article about how to catch spring crappies, it’s refreshing to see a book like Brown’s be published.

As we stood on the sidewalk after the interview swapping fishing stories, a passerby pointed to the book in Brown’s hand, the Mona Lisa adorned on the cover and the name “Dan Brown” in bold, golden letters just visible below

Jamison (Jami) Robert Arend Beloved Dad, Grandpa, Son, Brother and Friend. Jami passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, surrounded by his family on December 9, 2020, at the age of 46. Preceded in death by his father, Lawrence. Survived by children Jordyn (KariAnn), Justus, Jackson, Julion; grandchildren HaiLee, Lilith, Zelda; mother Linda (Rick) Palumbo, siblings Jon (Megan) and Jessica; niece Jasmine; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Jami always lived life on his own terms. He is dearly loved by all and greatly missed.

Daryl Dean Bartsch Daryl Dean Bartsch, a 42 year resident of White Bear Lake, aged 86, passed away on June 5, 2021, after complications from a fall while visiting Naples, Florida. Daryl was born on December 3, 1934 to Arnold Earnest Bartsch and Esther Margaret (Dunker) Bartsch in Osage, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa, served in the United States Army at the end of the Korean War, and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he began a career as a probation officer. Daryl later enrolled at the University of Southern California as a graduate student and earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration. Daryl met his wife Norma in Los Angeles. They married in 1965 and started a family. Daryl left government service in the 1970s to join a medical device company in Santa Barbara, after which he and Norma moved with their two boys to Minnesota, where they started a medical device distribution business.

They operated that company until 2018, when Daryl finally retired. Daryl loved his family, his home life, and the area restaurants. A devoted Christian, he was known for his laugh, frequent conversation, and his deep appreciation of a long and active life well lived. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents and sister Beverly Argo of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Norma, children, Eric (Dawn) of Naples, Florida and Kendall (Anne) of Hugo, Minnesota, his brother Wayne of Fontainebleau, France, and grandchildren Faith (Bartsch) Osten and Kayla, of Washington, D.C. and Amelia and Sydney of Hugo, Minnesota. A late-summer interment service for family and close friends is being planned at the Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa.

Water Gremlin president says company committed to environmental stewardship to measure system effectiveness. When a new environmental health and safety leader was hired July 2018, problems were identified and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) was notified.

A major change following the admission and resulting fines was discontinued use of the carcinogen TCE, a solvent used in Water Gremlin’s battery terminal coating process. The coating is a protective layer added to the terminals’ acid rings to reduce the chance that acid vapors will escape.

The company switched to a less toxic alternative called tDCE. “There is confusion about tDCE and how we found it,” Schulz said. “We engaged a University of Minnesota extension program called MnTAP to help us find alternatives. They found it through the Massachusetts Toxic Use Reduction Institute, which considered tDCE the best recommended alternative.”

The coating product is not a carcinogen, Schulz emphasized. “It is not listed by the EPA or American Cancer Society and it’s not on California’s all-inclusive Prop 65 list.”

Still, Water Gremlin is testing other technology to use in the coating process,

including UV light. “We are working with MPCA to understand this technology in a new (air emissions) permit,” explained Schulz, which they expect will be issued in July. “It will allow us to further reduce emissions and eliminate use of volatile organic compounds in our coating process.”

He added that the first coater is now running using UV curing following an unprecedented approval process by MPCA that Schulz attributed to “local pressure” that required a public comment period.

Particulate matter (PM) that comes from overspray in the coating process will be the focus of the new permit, according to Schulz. “While the goal is to eliminate VOCs, it was suggested that the process created too much particulates, particularly the very fine PM2.5, which is 20-plus times smaller than a human hair,” he said. “Water Gremlin has committed to HEPA filtration that will remove 99.5% of PM.” Founded in 1949, Water Gremlin is known for the Rubbercor fishing sinker.

Today, the fishing market is a fraction of its business. In the ’70s, the company became a major manufacturer of lead terminals for acid batteries for the North

and South American market. A diverse workforce numbers about 270.

According to Schulz, only four manufacturers control 95% of the automotive battery market.

The new air emissions permit from MPCA will allow Water Gremlin to operate for the next five years.

“As part of that agreement, we offered to commit a greater investment in controls to reduce our emissions and environmental impact well below anything out there,” Schulz said.

Future changes also include more fencing and trees to create a natural barrier at its 160,000-square-foot north campus on Otter Lake Road.

The company president told Rotarians that Water Gremlin is proposing to do more than required.

“We want to make a greater investment proactively in preventing emissions. To me, that makes more sense than investing in expensive monitoring equipment,” Schulz said. “That is not helping the environment. The community can be assured Water Gremlin will be an environmentally sustainable facility now and in the future.”

New public Montessori school option

Oak Hill Montessori Community School, a K-8 public charter school, will open its doors to full classrooms this fall.

Families and community members are invited to participate in the Founders' Day celebration at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the OHMCS campus at 4665 Hodgson Road, Shoreview. The event will include brief remarks, refreshments and time to tour the school building and outdoor spaces.

The charter school is available to serve all students in the community who are interested in a Montessori education.

Currently, classrooms for the 2021-22 academic year are full. Openings for the 2022-23 school year will be filled through an open enrollment process this winter using a public lottery, if needed.

WHITE BEAR LAKE — Calling it a “perfect storm” of issues, Water Gremlin’s president assured Rotarians the company has never backed away from its responsibility for emissions.

“The buck stops here,” maintained Scott Schulz, a 15-year company executive who took over the top job almost a year ago.

“We understand that stewardship of the environment and protection of our workers is 100% our responsibility.”

Schulz was invited to speak to White Bear Rotary earlier this month about the company and its future. He said he wanted the presentation to be “forthcoming and transparent.” Schulz talked about the $15 million Water Gremlin has spent on capital improvements to mitigate pollution violations, incremental to penalties, and how its Japanese parent company has committed to being a good corporate citizen.

Water, tea and conversation flow in summer art series

The rainfall and snowmelt that trickles through your backyard probably flows through a drain to a creek to a lake to the public drinking water supply— and from there, perhaps into the cup of tea in your hands.

Reflections on the role of water in our communities are the focus of “Upstream,” a summer art series hosted by the White Bear Center for the Arts and the Vadnais Lake Area Watershed Management Organization (VLAWMO) over the course of the summer. The series features ceramic artist Anna Metcalfe, a recipient of a 2020 McKnight Foundation Mid-Career Artist Award.

Each participant who signs up for an “Upstream” tea ceremony receives a one-of-a-kind ceramic teacup, which Metcalfe has inscribed with a unique story about water shared by a previous participant. The members of the group are invited to share their own personal reflections, inspired by the cups or by each others’ stories, and then asked to write their own story down on a template, which Metcalfe will use to create the next series of cups.

Metcalfe, a Minneapolis resident, has previously facilitated the “Upstream” project with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization. Metcalfe grew up in Virginia, but remembers visiting her grandfather’s home in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, as a child.

“We would spend time on the river, and I realized my grandfather always had stories about what it was like on the river as a kid,” Metcalfe said. “He knew the Mississippi River like a friend. I knew it like you know a celebrity. I really wanted to know the Mississippi River and all the waters around it more like my grandfather knew the water.”

Although the event is called a tea ceremony, Metcalfe was clear that it should not be confused with the practice of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.

“Who doesn’t like a cup of iced tea in the summertime, warm tea in wintertime, and a cookie or two, having a cup in their hands and talking with friends?” she said. “We’re setting it up as a conversation where it can feel at ease and kind of just be a normal moment. It makes it possible for people to really open up and see themselves as part of a community and an art project, and that their story is valuable and important to tell.”

WBCA Gallery Director Danielle Cezanne added that this type of community-minded art is exactly what people need after the rigor of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“An important part of the storytelling is just coming out of COVID and not talking to anybody for 16 months, and telling stories about water,” Cezanne said. “It’s kind of primal. There’s something about water that is life-giving and centering. I think we take it for granted; we don’t realize how all these ponds and creeks connect.”

humorous and heartwarming. Like Metcalfe’s grandfather, there are people in the community who may remember details of how the watershed has changed over time and who can even give clues to scientists about how the area should be managed in the future.

As part of her McKnight award, Metcalfe is working with a sociologist at the University of Minnesota to analyze the stories collected through “Upstream” and how they reflect people’s perception of natural resources.

The funding for the project comes from VLAWMO’s Community Blue grant fund, which is designed to promote water education and stewardship through community partnerships. The series aims to highlight the lesser-recognized parts of the watershed, such as the creeks and wetlands that contribute to the health of water further downstream. Among these is the bioswale located at Central Middle School, which filters the water that drains into Lambert Creek. WBCA will host a volunteer work day to help maintain this area, located just a stone’s throw away from the art center.

“We were really careful to plan this in a way that doesn’t include White Bear Lake proper because our watershed has a different story,” said Nick Voss, VLAWMO education and outreach coordinator.

“White Bear Lake has a very well-developed cultural experience: sailing, swimming. It’s accessible to human use. We wanted to focus on these areas that have less public access but are still important. This whole program is also a way to rethink floodplains and to reflect on their value and see the connection to the big picture of a watershed.”

Each tea ceremony and education event will help to inform residents about the state of their watershed and leave them with a better understanding of ways to get involved with local water topics.

The first tea ceremony will be held Tuesday, June 29, at Lions Park, across the street from Goose Lake, which falls within the VLAWMO district. The ceremonies are limited to eight participants each and will continue through the summer, culminating in a final event during WBCA’s reopening celebration in the fall. This event will include the results of the water story analysis from the U of M research, as well as a video highlighting quotes from those sharing their water stories on camera. Sprinkling Policy The City has a sprinkling policy for its municipal water system users in effect from June 1 to September 15 to ensure an adequate water supply to meet consumer and emergency needs.

as a storm shelter and classroom space—will be completed in August 2021.

The effects of COVID-19 were notable in the district’s 2021-2022 preliminary budget presented at the meeting. The nutrition services fund, for example, began the year in the red with a negative fund balance of $315,649.

“We expect this to be a good summer for the nutritional services program, and we project that we’ll be out of the negative fund balance after next year,” said Tim Wald, assistant superintendent of finances and operations. The board approved the preliminary budget, but the state Legislature has not yet approved a general education formula allowance for 2021-2022.

Depending on the results of this decision, the district’s budget projections may change.

With fewer staff onsite due to pandemic restrictions over the past year, the premium for worker’s compensation insurance dropped by a drastic 25%. The board approved an agreement with

insurance provider Risk Administration Services Inc. for the amount of $443,658.

“I don’t want to look forward to next year’s increase in worker’s comp that we have to pay out, but it will be a good sign because it means bodies are back in the building,” said school board member Angela Thompson.

The board also approved a property and casualty insurance package with Minnesota Insurance Scholastic Trust in the amount of $486,478.

As the district anticipates the period of changes ahead, board members also made sure to recognize the strength and courage of the students who navigated all the unexpected challenges of this past school year.

“It’s been really hard being a grownup during this pandemic, but I think it’s even harder, in a lot of ways, to be a kid,” said board member Jessica Ellison. “I wanted to thank all of our students for their strength in this once-in-alifetime experience. They were amazing.”

MMCD: Surveillance key to mosquito control

In Minnesota, few things are more synonymous with summer than mosquitoes. Fortunately, those in the sevencounty Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) have been getting a break from those tiny pests for more than 60 years.

Since 1958, MMCD has been fine-tuning mosquito control in an area which now encompasses more than 3 million residents.

The days of spraying clouds of chemicals — which target adult mosquitoes— are a thing of the past here. Instead, control efforts are aimed at mosquito larvae in the ponds, ditches, swamps and other stagnant waters where they develop.

Each of more than 200,000 such sites in the district is classified by factors such as location, size, depth, duration of water retention and even the type of mosquitoes that breed there. Treatments are then tailored to site characteristics, rainfall and data collected by on-the-ground monitoring.

That data collection process is what Alex Carlson, MMCD public relations coordinator, refers to as “surveillance.”

Mosquito control would probably grind to a halt without it. “Surveillance is one

of the first steps of our integrated pest management program,” he said.

What the public may not know is that surveillance takes multiple forms and is conducted nearly year-round. In the fall, MMCD field technicians survey in certain areas for larvae of one variety, the “cattail mosquito.” Their larvae overwinter, unlike most mosquito varieties. In spring and summer, technicians disperse almost daily in their familiar white and green trucks to retrieve samples of larvae. Also, throughout the summer they set traps and use nets to collect adult mosquitoes, canvassing for varieties known to transmit diseases to humans.

The larvicides used by MMCD are known as methoprene, spinosad, and Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti). Carlson explains they are all compounds that interrupt the development between larval and adult stages and “don’t harm non-target insects, pets or humans.” In fact, spinosad and Bti are derived from naturally occurring bacteria. All are applied in dry, pelletized form and are relatively short-lived in the environment.

Carlson underscores how heavily environmental concerns weigh in the decision-making process: “The most common misperception is probably how

much research and data goes into every decision that MMCD makes. We consider a lot of factors before making a treatment, and choose the most environmentally friendly method to do it.”

Helicopters take to the skies in May to begin applying pellets to larger water-collecting basins. These products are designed to deliver insecticides quickly and have a rapid impact on developing larvae. Smaller sites are usually treated on foot by field technicians.

Additional applications occur over the course of the season as needed, which may be as often as every major rain event.

Results are generally good, according to Carlson: “[Treatments are] 80 to 100 percent effective, depending on the site.” He explains that since the MMCD encompasses such a large area, it can achieve better mosquito suppression by utilizing widespread larval control. This is in contrast to spraying for adult mosquitoes, which is more localized and doesn’t account for their ability to travel miles from their source.

But while modern mosquito control efforts may concentrate on the larval stages, that doesn’t mean they never use sprays. When surveillance discovers certain disease-carrying varieties, MMCD personnel will apply insecticides such as

Permethrin via backpack sprayer in order to kill adult mosquitoes.

Varieties of particular concern are those that have the potential to transmit devastating diseases like LaCrosse encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis (fatal in 30% of cases), and West Nile virus.

Carlson credits MMCD’s surveillance and control measures in part for the fact that Minnesota reported zero cases of West Nile in 2020.

In addition to rigorous mosquito control, the MMCD conducts monitoring of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Specifically, deer ticks and the locally rare Lone Star tick have the potential to spread a variety of diseases like babesiosis, Lyme disease, and ehrlichiosis.

MMCD also treats select rivers annually with Bti for biting gnats. Media attention has been focused recently on biting gnat concentrations in the south metro area, which Carlson describes as “no public health risk, really, just a nuisance.”

Local ‘American Ninja Warrior’ star competes in season 13

his new career change and the birth of his and his wife Victoria’s son Linus about a month before Sundberg competed in Washington.

“This time around I was juggling a lot more than I was used to, which made things complicated, but we got through it,” Sundberg said.

Sundberg trains with other former and current “American Ninja Warrior” athletes at Obstacle Academy in Edina. Because of the nature of the courses, the athletes are forced to be well-versed in several different areas of fitness, such as upper body strength, core strength, forearm strength and balance.

“Up until competition, I train every day, but I train something differently so I don’t have any overuse injuries or do something that would hinder my improvements,” Lundberg said.

Sundberg is unique to the “American Ninja Warrior” competitive field in the sense that he is much taller than most of his other competitors. He towers over the other athletes, who tend to be around 5-foot-6. Having such a large, strong frame is helpful for Sundberg in many ways, but being tall makes certain obstacles very difficult to navigate.

“My height helps me on a lot of obstacles with my wing span,” Sundberg said. “But with my size, balance obstacles can be very tricky for me. I don’t have the center of gravity that is ideal for the balance obstacles like many of my fellow competitors.”

Sundberg competed in April during the filming of the show’s qualifying rounds. As athletes competed amidst

the global pandemic, the season 13 filming was once again without fans in attendance, creating a different environment for the competitors.

“It was very empty, which was kind of nice because it was much more calming this time around,” Sundberg said. “I didn’t necessarily have the adrenaline that I normally do, but I was able to have a better state of mind this past run.”

Because of the fan prohibition for season 13, Sundberg’s family and friends were unable to be in attendance for his run but were instead livestreamed onto large screens in the arena so they could witness his performance.

“My wife is incredibly supportive of me, but I will say the ‘Ninja Warrior’ competitions are probably the most anxiety-inducing events for her for the entire year,” Sundberg said. “My entire family has really embraced it, and with my Swedish Ninja entourage they are always there to give me a supportive hand and give me the encouragement I need to find success on the show.”

The show returned to NBC on May 31. Episodes air every Monday and feature “Split Decision,” a new concept this season where competitors get to choose between two obstacles to end their run. Sundberg will be featured in an episode coming later this summer. He hopes to return to the show if a 14th season is renewed.

“I hope they film a season 14, and if they do, I’ll be one of the first ones to submit my application,” Sundberg said. “I’ll be juggling a child, I’ll be juggling my new career, but I think I’ll have time to fit in some training.”

As the blare of the horn sounds, Sundberg takes off, effortlessly scaling balance planks with his long, 6-foot-3-inch frame, leaping and grabbing onto large, door-shaped platforms, swinging from one to another, and using his upper body strength to jump, swing and push from one obstacle to the next. All this before scampering up the black 14.5-foot “Warped Wall” and slamming his hand on the red button to end his round in a blazing 58 seconds.

This all came in 2019 as Sundberg, the now 31-year-old Twin Cities native, crushed his qualifying run at the Tacoma Dome in the Seattle Qualifiers, where he returned in April for the season 13 filming of “American Ninja Warrior.” Sundberg, a 2008 Mahtomedi High School graduate, majored in biology pre-med at Bethel University. Since graduating from college, he has spent time at the Mayo Clinic and worked in radiology. He recently completed his studies to become a physician’s assistant.

Athletics and competition have been an integral part of Sundberg’s life ever since he was a kid, when he competed in baseball and soccer in high school and continued his soccer career collegiately at Bethel.

“I always thought athletics kind of drove you to be the best version of yourself through competition, and that’s something I’ve always taken along with me,” said Sundberg. “After college I’m not playing sports per se, but I’m still having my competitive fix through ‘Ninja Warrior.’”

Sundberg became a fan of the NBC show before it made its way to the United States. The show started in Japan, where it was called “Sasuke” before coming to America on an extremely low budget and airing on the G4 network. Now, the show is aired on NBC and has gained a large following in the last decade. Millions of viewers tune in each episode to watch the athletes compete.

After watching the show for several years, Sundberg began to take interest in the high-intensity competition.

“I played collegiate soccer, but I didn’t necessarily have the strength or the endurance to compete on the show. But then I see the occupations of the people on the show, and they are just everyday people,” said Sundberg.

“I was lucky enough after about three years of training to compete on the first year of the show and then, ever since, I have kind of been a returning competitor.”

The show requires a lengthy written application and a three-minute application video to be considered for casting. Thousands of applicants apply each year, but only 400 competitors have been selected for upcoming season 13. The series makes a conscious effort to pick more eccentric personalities to give the audience more entertainment value, and Sundberg, who goes by “The Swedish Ninja,” has fully embraced this concept.

Zephyr honors announced Boys lacrosse: Zephyr leaders, honors listed; Lemke gets Pioneer Press award Levi Lemke, Mahtomedi lacrosse standout, was named East Metro Player of the Year by the Pioneer Press, heading a list of honors for Zephyr players. The Zephyrs were 10-6 overall and 5-1 in conference.

Other state honors for Lemke — a senior attacker who notched 60 goals, third-most in the state, and 20 assists — were coaches association first-team all-state, first-team all-section and all-Metro East Conference. He was one of 1,200 players listed by U.S. Lacrosse as all-Americans.

Meanwhile, EJ Charpentier, Zephyr attacker with 47 goals and 30 assists, got second-team allstate, first-team all-section, and all-Metro East.

Also named all-conference were Jack Myhre, junior defender, and Caden Donahue, senior goalkeeper (.655 save percentage, 8.02 goalsagainst). Also making all-section were Myhre, first team, and Dominic Rohrer, junior defender, second team. Honorable mentions went to Drew Buchmayer, junior midfielder; Owen Tacheny, sophomore face-off specialist (winning 143 of 220); and Owen Knapp, junior attacker (team-leading 66 ground balls).

Girls lacrosse: Mahtomedi’s season leaders, honors announced Four Mahtomedi girls lacrosse players were named all-Metro East Conference after the Zephyrs posted a 9-5 overall record and 5-1 in conference. They are Jayne Dimitri, senior attacker ( 37 goals, 29 assists, 27 ground balls); Samantha Burns, senior attacker and midfielder (37 goals); Olivia Boxmeyer, senior goalie (437 save percentage); and Terah Skillings, senior defender (37 ground balls, 14 forced turnovers). Getting honorable mentions were McKenna Cunnington, sophomore defender (21 goals, 10 assists); Ellie Donovan, senior midfielder (15 goals); and Evie Cegielski, freshman defender. Making all-section were Dimitri (first team) and Samantha Burns, senior midfielder.

Baseball: Zephyrs' Neubeck all-metro Mahtomedi senior Tony Neubeck was named to the Star-Tribune’s All-Metro baseball first team, just prior to the state tournament. Two recent graduates of White Bear Lake High School have been awarded Eagle Scout Scholarships by Northern Star Scouting for outstanding troop leadership, scholastic achievement and strong citizenship.

The recipients are Kolby Bachmeier of White Bear Lake, an Eagle Scout in Troop 9726, and Wyatt Fish of Hugo, an Eagle Scout in Troop 9151. Both received a $1,500 scholarship.

Eagle, the highest award in Scouting, is achieved by only about 6% of all Scouts.

Last year Northern Star Scouting troops produced 611 Eagle Scouts. More than 110 applied for 2021 scholarships and 22 were awarded. An average of $40,000 is awarded to graduating seniors annually.

Hole-in-one Wes Carlson of White Bear Lake made a hole-in-one on opening night of the White Bear Bar Golf League at Loggers Trail Golf Club in Stillwater.He hit the ball 143 yards using a pitching wedge. His group included Ojars Linde, Dan Moga, Jeff Moga and Bob Burn, who witnessed the shot.

With none of the drama normally associated with state championship games, the Mahtomedi Zephyrs wrapped up the Class AAA baseball title pummeling Grand Rapids 20-3 on Friday afternoon at Target Field.

Against a Grand Rapids team that had run out of pitching, the Zephyrs scored 10 runs in the sixth inning and notched the most runs and largest margin of victory for a state championship in the history of the tournament.

Mahtomedi blanked their first two state foes — Sauk Rapids-Rice 2-0 Tuesday and Sartell-St. Stephen 7-0 Wednesday, both in Jordan — and finished 20-5 with 10 straight wins. Grand Rapids finished 19-8.

They used three starting pitchers, all seniors, with Luke Loughlin and Tony Neubeck, this year’s mainstays, throwing shutouts before Johnny DeVore made his first start since 2019 in the finals.

“Luke has great control of all three of his pitches and can throw them on any count,” said senior catcher Kyle Oswald, who has caught all three of them since early in grade school.

“Tony can overpower guys and mix in off-speed pitches perfectly. Johnny, he was put in a big spot after not pitching for so long, and did everything he needed to.”

Neubeck will continue his baseball career at University of Missouri and Loughlin at University of

Minnesota-Duluth. Opting for college football will be Oswald at St. Scholastica and DeVore, a quarterback, at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

I totaled just under a half inch while other metro rain gauges totaled near the same to an inch. Our neighbors to the east in Eau Claire totaled over two inches. We finally turned off our A/C as Monday's high was only in the mid 60's. Welcome relief, at least for a day.

The jet stream is dropping a little further south so we'll get a break from the 90º heat and maybe mix a few rain showers in from time to time. My lawn and others have turned a little brown so it will be interesting to see if this latest rain will green us up.
